26 Best Things To Do In Ventura California (By a Local)

Ventura is the perfect Central California coastal destination for those wanting to spend a few days relaxing near the beach, enjoy fun outdoor activities like surfing and hiking and indulge in fresh, drool-worthy seafood. And we should know! As locals living in Ventura County for the past several years, we have discovered so many incredible things to do in Ventura California .

Whether you’re heading on a weekend trip to Ventura from out of town, just moved here, or planning a pit stop on a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco , our Ventura guide is here to help!

In this post, I’ll cover some of my favorite things to do in Ventura for a fun coastal trip.

We have personally been to all of these locations and this is where we take our family and friends whenever they come to visit.

Best Things To Do In Ventura California:

1. san buenaventura state beach.

Spending a couple of hours at the San Buenaventura State Beach is one of the top things to do in Ventura for both locals and out-of-town visitors alike. This pristine beach is a great spot for sports such as surfing, swimming, volleyball or just laying out on the sandy shoreline.

San Buenaventura State Beach is also the beginning of the Ventura Beach Bike Trail that you can take down to the Ventura Pier and past it. Along the way, you can enjoy views of scenic sand dunes, fresh air, and unique futuristic-looking restrooms (yep, you read that right!) .

For day visitors there are plenty of picnic tables where you can enjoy a lunch with a view. If you don’t want to bring your own food, I highly recommend stopping by The Jolly Oyster Ventura seafood truck that’s situated within San Buenaventura State Beach.

We usually order the grilled oysters along with fried oyster tacos. For something a bit more unique try the Uni Ceviche Tostada that comes with Santa Barbara Sea Urchin.

Do note that dogs are allowed along the bike path and within The Jolly Oyster Ventura food truck area but not on the beach itself.

2. Marina Park

One of the first places that I visited after moving to Ventura was Marina Park. This is one of the most popular Ventura attractions so you’ll see it popping up on Google Maps as one of the best things to do in the area.

Marina Park is situated right next to the ocean and consists of 15 acres of walking paths and a grassy area where you can enjoy a beachfront picnic. It’s a great place to come for families with kids or if you’re looking for somewhere to take your dog for a walk.

Marina Park has a beachfront playground and a large ship in the sand where kids can go to play in. The park is situated right next to the ocean and Ventura Harbor if you want to dip your toes into the water.

3. Ventura Harbor Village

Ventura Harbor Village is one of the top places to go in Ventura, especially for out-of-town visitors. Ventura Harbor Village is an outdoor shopping area situated in the perfect location between the ocean and Ventura Marina.

Here you can walk along the harbor and check out local shops, seafood restaurants, cafes, and dessert spots. A few of the most popular seafood restaurants include Brophy Bros. , Andria’s Seafood , and Baja Bay Surf n Taco .

If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to stop by Coastal Cone & Parlor for a cone of soft-serve ice cream! They offer lots of flavors including some more interesting choices such as Fishzookies and Mermaid Yaki Fish Cone.

From Ventura Harbor, you can also go on a boat ride to Channel Islands National Park which can be arranged through Island Packers Cruises.

4. Ventura Botanical Gardens

Ventura Botanical Gardens is a beautiful outdoor space just north of downtown Ventura. If you’re looking for relaxing activities in Ventura, put Ventura Botanical Garden on top of your list!

As locals, we come to Ventura Botanical Gardens quite often for the stunning scenery and excellent ocean views . This outdoor garden offers several miles of hiking trails that climb up to the top of a hill offering unobstructed ocean views along the way. The trails are very easy so it’s a great place to visit for families with little kids.

Ventura Botanical Gardens price for entrance is $7 per person , but they offer free visitor days on Fridays. This location also allows leashed dogs, but only on Wednesdays and Fridays. On all other days, dogs are not allowed.

There is a small visitor parking lot next to the Ventura Botanical Gardens welcome center where you can park your car and pay for the entrance fee before heading into the trails.

Hiking Tip:  Before heading out hiking, we like to download an offline map from the  AllTrails hiking app . This way we always have access to the trail map, even if we lose reception or get lost!

5. Take a Surfing Lesson

If you’ve never tried surfing before, but it’s always been on top of your bucket list, you’re in luck! Ventura has some of the best surfing conditions on the Central Coast making it a wonderful place to learn surfing for beginners.

For the best experience, book this Ventura Surf Lesson which takes place on Mondo’s Beach, just 10 minutes north of Ventura. During the surfing lesson, the experienced instructors will teach you how to stand up on the surfboard, find your balance, and ride waves all the way to the shore.

I’ve taken numerous surfing lessons myself and it’s the fastest way to catch a wave without previous surfing experience . This Ventura surfing lesson includes all the necessary gear so you don’t have to worry about a thing!

6. Spencer Makenzie’s Seafood Restaurant

Spencer Makenzie’s is one of the most iconic seafood eateries in all of Ventura . While there are some fancier seafood restaurants in town (such as Brophy Bros. and Lure Fish House ), Spencer Makenzie’s remains our favorite.

Spencer Makenzie’s is known for their world-famous fish tacos that are a must-try! This family-operated no-frills restaurant is affordable yet creates food only using the best, freshest ingredients. Because of this, you can always expect to see a long line of customers waiting to try their food.  

You can order food at the outdoor counter and the order will be called out when it’s ready. There is some seating outdoors and indoors, but the outdoor seating is very limited and tables get snatched up quickly.

Besides the fish tacos, a few of our favorites include the calamari tacos, grilled fish & shrimp burrito, Fish & Chips, and clam chowder.

7. Stay At Waypoint Ventura

If you’re planning a trip to Ventura from out of town and are looking for a memorable place to stay overnight, be sure to check out Waypoint Ventura ! This property is located near the beach and features unique accommodations in luxurious vintage trailers .

Waypoint Ventura is a great choice for couples or groups that want to enjoy a bit of privacy, but still be close to each other. The property offers excellent amenities such as BBQ areas, cornhole games, and complimentary bikes that you can ride around downtown Ventura and to the beach.

Each of the trailers features modern upgrades including air conditioning, flat-screen TV, a shower, and a fridge. This hotel-style campground is also a short walking distance of popular local eateries such as Spencer Makenzie’s, Toppers Pizza Place , and Frontside Cafe .

8. Ventura Pier

A visit to Ventura would not be complete without stopping by the Ventura Pier . This is the oldest pier in California where you can come for a sunset stroll, go fishing, or watch surfers catch waves in the ocean.

At the beginning of the pier, you can stop by Eric Ericsson’s Fish Co and MadeWest Brewing Co to enjoy fresh seafood and craft beer overlooking the water . If you’re looking for something a bit more budget-friendly, Beach House Tacos is a popular outdoor taco stand in the same location.  

From the pier, you can also walk down the Ventura Promenade which offers excellent ocean views. If you have little kids, be sure to check out the Ventura Promenade Beach Playground that’s situated right on the sandy beach!

9. Surfers Point At Seaside Park

Surfers Point At Seaside Park is one of the most popular beaches in Ventura that’s great for surfing, windsurfing, and bird watching. We like to come here on the weekends to go for a walk along the ocean and bring our dog for a bit of play on the beach.

Parking for Surfers Point can be a bit challenging, especially on the weekends. We usually park along Shoreline Drive which has 30-minute free visitor parking or you can pay a small fee and park in the Public Parking @ surfers point .  

From Surfers Point you can walk along the Ventura Promenade which turns into a bike path. If you’re looking to get away from the busy tourist crowds, Surfers Point Dunes is a quiet beach just a short walk west.

10. Emma Wood State Beach

If you keep going along the bike path past Surfers Point Dunes, you will eventually reach Emma Wood State Beach . This is a popular location for RV camping with campsites situated right next to the sandy beach . This campground offers primitive campsites meant for self-contained vehicles like RVs and campervans.

Although we haven’t camped here ourselves, we like to take our bikes for a spin along the adjacent bike path to enjoy the scenery. Often you might spot wildlife in the ocean like dolphins swimming along the shoreline.

Emma Wood State Beach is tucked away in a secluded location so you’ll rarely encounter many people here. Overall, this is one of the things to do in Ventura Beach if you want to get away from the crowds!

11. Walk Around Downtown Ventura

Downtown Ventura’s Main Street is one of the top places to visit in Ventura! This area consists of several blocks of pedestrian walking area that is closed off to car traffic.

Along both sides of Main Street, you’ll find many restaurants, bars, cafes, yoga studios, and antique shops. We like to come here to go on a stroll, stop by for a drink at one of the local restaurants and browse through the boutique stores.

On the weekends Ventura’s downtown is buzzing full of out-of-town visitors and tourists seeking a getaway on the coast. This area often hosts fun events like Ventura Wine Walks, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and Holiday Tree Lighting.

12. Mission Basilica San Buenaventura

The Old Mission Basilica San Buenaventura is one of the most notable things to do in downtown Ventura. This historic building is located along Main Street so it’s a great place to stop by as you’re walking around downtown to learn more about Ventura’s history.

Mission San Buenaventura is open to visitors from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every day . There is a small fee of $5 to enter the Mission with discounts for seniors, active military, and youth.

With the admission, you can explore the church, garden, the interior, and see various artwork and sculptures. It takes about an hour to walk through the mission grounds which makes it a great little stop!

13. Serra Cross At Grant Park

Serra Cross is an iconic Ventura landmark that can be seen from afar! This oceanfront park features a giant cross and sweeping panoramic views overlooking the Ventura County coast.

Serra Cross is situated at the summit of Grant Park which you can reach by foot or by car. At the top, there is a small parking lot and walkways that lead to a viewpoint of the Serra Cross.

This historic monument was originally placed by a Spanish missionary in 1782 to guide people traveling to Mission Basilica San Buenaventura. Over the years the wooden cross has been replaced several times but remains a major Ventura attraction.

14. Dinner & Drinks At Rumfish y Vino

Whenever our friends come to visit us in Ventura for the first time, we always take them for dinner and drinks at Rumfish y Vino restaurant in downtown Ventura. Rumfish y Vino is also a great place to dine if you’re looking for romantic things to do in Ventura for couples.

This gastropub-style restaurant has a beautiful modern interior with a relaxed, beachy vibe . Their dinner menu is limited but features drool-worthy choices such as Caribbean Fish Stew, Cochinita Pibil Tacos, Belize BBQ, and many seafood options.

For starters, we usually pick a few appetizers to share. Some of my favorites include mussels in mustard crema sauce, Peruvian ceviche, and garlic fries.

If you’re looking for a fun spot where you can enjoy a few cocktails and delicious food, this is where you’ll want to go!

15. Ice Cream At McConnell’s

Have a bit of a sweet tooth? Ventura is home to McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams which has been serving delicious treats to Central Coast locals for over 70 years . The original store was established in Santa Barbara in 1934 with a newer location in Ventura that opened 14 years ago.

McConnell’s motto is to ‘ Leave the world just a little sweeter than we found it ’. And that is exactly what they strive to do!

The staff at Ventura McConnell’s is always so welcoming and friendly whenever we come in. They have two ice cream stations displaying the various flavors that you can pick from for a variety of taste preferences. I usually go for the Santa Barbara Strawberry and Toasted Coconut Almond Chip combo.

16. Channel Islands National Park

One of the first times that I came to visit Ventura years ago was to go on a day trip to Channel Islands National Park . Located just a short boat ride from Ventura Harbor, Channel Islands is a popular nature getaway for California locals.

Channel Islands National Park consists of five islands:

• Anacapa Island
• Santa Cruz Island
• San Miguel Island
• Santa Barbara Island
• Santa Rosa Island

Within these islands, you can enjoy plenty of fun outdoor activities like camping, kayaking, snorkeling, wildlife sighting, and hiking amongst pristine landscapes. To reach the islands you will need to reserve a boat ride with Island Packers Cruises that depart from Ventura Harbor.

Some of the islands like Anacapa and Santa Cruz can be visited year-round while the other islands have limited visitor seasons. As an option, you can also reserve wildlife and whale-watching cruises that travel next to the islands without departing the boat.

17. Go Biking Along Ventura – Ojai Bike Path

The Ventura – Ojai Bike Path is a long, paved pathway that travels for 15 miles from Ojai to downtown Ventura . This is a great route to bike, trail run or walk if you’re looking for a longer place to stretch your legs.

I’ve walked parts of the Ventura Ojai bike path when looking for a quick escape into nature with my dog. I’ve also run the entire length as part of the annual Ventura Marathon. The pathway is fairly flat with a little bit of downslope ( if you start in Ojai ).

With plenty of trees, lush vegetation, and views of the mountains, the Ventura Ojai bike path is one of the best places to take a bike out for a spin in Ventura!

18. Grab a Beer At a Local Brewery

For being a small beach town, Ventura is known for having quite a few popular local breweries . No matter where you end up staying, the chances are that there is a brewery within a few blocks from your hotel or vacation rental!

A few of our favorite Ventura breweries include:

• Transmission Brewing . This brewery is situated next to Toppers Pizza Place with an adjacent door and shared seating area so you can grab a beer and food at the same time.
• Ventura Coast Brewing Company . One of our favorites in downtown Ventura for its overall vibe and modern setting. VCBC often features food trucks on their outdoor patio.
• MadeWest Brewing Co . MadeWest arguably has one of the best locations situated right on the Ventura Pier! This is where you’ll want to go if you want to enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean as you sip on your craft beer.
• Topa Topa Brewing Co . Topa Topa is one of the most popular local breweries with several locations on the Central Coast including Ventura, Santa Barbara, Ojai, and Camarillo.
• Rincon Brewery-Ventura . This brewery is a great choice for larger parties or if you want to enjoy a laid-back setting with plenty of food options.

19. Go On a Hike At Arroyo Verde Park

Arroyo Verde is a local park in Ventura where you can spend time outdoors surrounded by a green hills and beautiful hiking trails . There are several miles of trails that you can enjoy here with plenty of visitor parking.

For the longest hiking option, we recommend following the Arroyo Verde Park Loop route from the AllTrails hiking app . The higher you climb, the better the views will get!

We especially enjoy visiting Arroyo Verde in spring when the entire park is full of blooming flowers. This park is also very dog friendly so it’s the perfect place to bring your four-legged friend for exercise and play.

Visitor Tip:  In the summer months, keep an eye out for rattlesnakes, especially when the weather starts getting hot. I like to carry a  snake venom extractor kit  when going on hiking adventures in California, especially in dry coastal areas.

20. Pete’s Breakfast House

Pete’s Breakfast House is an iconic Ventura breakfast spot that is a must-try at least once! This casual breakfast joint was featured on Food Network’s famous Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show which created quite the local buzz.

Pete’s Breakfast House takes pride in serving delicious food at affordable prices that won’t break the bank. Not sure what to try? Order the Chorizo Burger or Pancake Roll with yogurt and berries that Guy Fieri himself called ‘ righteous’ .

This breakfast restaurant is open from 7:30 to 2:00 and fills up quickly, especially on the weekends. Be sure to come early in the morning to get a spot on their charming outdoor patio.

21. Grab Coffee At Prospect Coffee Roasters

If you’re looking to grab a cup of coffee in the morning before exploring Ventura, I recommend stopping by my favorite coffee shop in town – Prospect Coffee Roasters.

This inviting coffee shop boasts a beautiful modern interior complimented by some of the best coffee on the Central Coast. I usually go for the Batch Brew drip coffee but they sell plenty of drink choices such as Americano, Latte, Cold Brew, Hand Pour, and Matcha Latte, along with others.

Prospect Coffee Roasters sources coffee from small farms around the world such as Peru, Mexico, Colombia, and Ethiopia. The coffee sold at Prospect is very strong with notes of sweetness and acidity.

22. Go On a Day Trip To Ojai

If you want to switch things up on a trip to Ventura, plan to spend a day in the nearby city of Ojai! Ojai is a small town just 30 minutes north of Ventura where you can find lots of charming art studios, wine-tasting rooms, spas, and restaurants.

A few of the most popular wineries and tasting rooms in this area include:

• Old Creek Ranch & Winery
• The Ojai Vineyard Tasting Room
• Majestic Oak Vineyard and Wine Tasting

Surrounded by lush trees and mountains, Ojai is the perfect place to spend an afternoon on the weekends. Nearby you can also find excellent hiking trails such as the Ventura River Preserve Trail .

23. Four Brix Winery And Tasting Room

Don’t want to go all the way to Ojai for wine tasting? You’re in luck as Ventura has its own wine-tasting room at the center of the town!

At the Four Brix Winery and Tasting Room, you can try a selection of high-quality wines sourced from grapes grown on the Central Coast in Paso Robles, Santa Ynez, and Ojai. This tasting room is open with limited hours Friday to Sunday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

On the weekend evenings, they often host fun events such as live music, wine and cheese pairings, paint & sip, and many others! For details be sure to check out the Four Brix Winery event calendar here .

24. Harmon Canyon Preserve

Harmon Canyon is another one of our favorite local places for spending time outdoors in Ventura. This preserve covers over 2100 acres of land with longer hiking and mountain biking trails.

Within minutes of entering Harmon Canyon, you’ll feel fully submerged in nature. This location is especially beautiful in spring when all of the mountains are covered in green grass and there is water flowing through the creeks.

For a longer hike follow the Harmon Canyon to Overlook Bench route from the AllTrails hiking app . For a shorter option, take the main Harmon Canyon Road or head into one of the narrow side trails to explore various scenery.

25. The Collection Riverpark

Many people come to Ventura for its world-renowned beaches, seafood, and outdoor activities. But while that sounds fun for some, retail therapy is a fun way to spend an afternoon on a weekend for others. Thankfully in this small beach town, you can do both!

The Collection Riverpark is a great shopping mall just a few minutes drive east of Ventura on the border of Ventura and Oxnard. A few of the most popular stores here include REI, H&M, Whole Foods, Victoria’s Secret, and Ulta Beauty amongst many others.

This outdoor shopping center also has a lot of great restaurants that we like to frequent for dinner such as Gen Korean BBQ House , Yardhouse, and Kabuki Japanese Restaurant .

26. Museum Of Ventura County

The Museum of Ventura County is a local museum situated in downtown Ventura near Mission Basilica San Buenaventura 1782. This museum is small but features artwork and several different exhibits along with an outdoor play area for kids featuring straw huts and musical instruments.

Within the museum, you can learn more about Ventura’s history, Chumash native people, and their culture. Admission to the museum is free and it only takes about an hour to walk through the entire museum and see the exhibits on display.

I had the time of my life in Ventura City, truly a hidden Californian gem. 

Each attraction presented its unique charm, creating an incredible bouquet of experiences.

Cal Coast Adventures’ Surf Lesson was my first stop, and it was a rush.

1. Ventura Pier and Promenade

Ventura Pier dates from 1872 and is a favorite beauty spot in the city. Started in 2012, the Ventura Botanical Gardens is the perfect place to commune with nature if you are in the Ventura area. The gardens were first established by local residents and at the center of the gardens sit Grant Park which spans 107 acres of greenery and offers visitors views over not only Ventura but also the ocean in the distance. The gardens have 160 species of plants that mostly hail from the Mediterranean as well as pine and eucalyptus forests. The gardens also include Demonstration Trail, a mile long walkway that lets you take in views of vineyards, mountains, and farmland in the distance.

3. Mission San Buenaventura

The San Buenaventura Mission was built in 1749 by a Franciscan priest looking to convert the indigenous Chumash population to Catholicism. The mission has experienced fires, earthquakes, and even threats from marauding pirates, but it still stands proud to this day and is in working order with mass held here regularly. Things to look out for on a visit here include the 1809 altar as well as the collection of period artwork on display. It may only be an hour north of Los Angeles, but plan a trip using this 3-day Ventura itinerary and you’ll feel like you’re a world away!

I recently spent 3 days in Ventura, California, and loved every minute of it. This unique little city is known as the place where ferries leave for the Channel Islands , but there are so many things to do in Ventura that once you’ve visited for the first time, you’ll keep coming back again and again. It’s an outdoor paradise with stunning beaches, a gorgeous botanical garden, and a fun harbor area. Plus, every one of the restaurants in Ventura I tried was amazing.

Arrival in Ventura / How to Get to Ventura

There’s a reason I consider Ventura one of the best weekend getaways from Los Angeles: its proximity! Ventura sits 70 miles northwest of Los Angeles and is one of those rare places in California you can actually get to by train. That, combined with the fact that it’s a super walkable town, means you may just be able to plan a car-less weekend in California. That alone would convince me to go, to be honest.

From Los Angeles

If you live in Los Angeles, you’re in luck. Ventura is only about an hour’s drive north of LA. 

You’ve got two options if you want to travel by car from Los Angeles to Ventura California: the Pacific Coast Highway or the 101. I always recommend PCH if you have time since it’s so beautiful but if you’re short on time or traffic is gnarly, stick to the 102 instead.

Another great option for getting to Ventura from Los Angeles is to take a train from Union Station. The train takes about two hours but you’ll have absolutely stunning views during the trip.  You can book your train ticket here .

From Anywhere Else

The closest airport to Ventura is in Santa Barbara. It’s a small airport, and Ventura is only about a 30-minute drive south on PCH. But because it’s small, you’ll probably have better luck finding flights to and from Burbank or LAX. A car rental is your best option for getting to Ventura although Amtrak does stop at the Burbank Airport.

How to Get Around Ventura

I had no problem walking to most of the places I wanted to see in Ventura , though I did drive to Ventura Harbor on the day I took the ferry to the Channel Islands.

If you have a car, you might find it easier to drive to the Ventura attractions that aren’t located near downtown or your hotel. There is plenty of easily accessible parking everywhere. But if you want a driving-free weekend, consider using the public buses, rideshare services, or even renting a bike if you’re feeling adventurous! There are numerous transport options in this charming city.

Best Time to Visit Ventura

It’s Southern California, so there’s not really a bad time to visit Ventura, although winter can be on the colder side. December and January can see temperatures as low as 45 degrees! Since the best things to do in Ventura are outside, I’d recommend visiting in spring, summer, or fall .

The good news is that there aren’t many rainy days in Ventura. And even though it’s right on the coast, the winds are pretty mild.

3 Days in Ventura Itinerary: Day 1

Travel to ventura.

There’s nothing I love more than a road trip, so if you have the time, it’s really fun to take the iconic PCH to Ventura . It makes getting there an adventure all on its own!

Lunch at Spencer Makenzie’s

I think everyone should start a California trip with fish tacos, and if you’re going to do that, why not get the best? Spencer Makenzie’s boasts that their fish tacos are “world-famous” and they did not disappoint.

If fish tacos aren’t your thing (you’re missing out!), they’ve also got a delicious and unique tuna “pocket” and some stellar shrimp tacos. Be sure to try the sweet-hot chili sauce or any of their homemade salsas.

Explore Downtown Ventura

Most of the time, when people say a city’s downtown is fun, it’s often because of the bar scene (as a non-drinker , that’s not really for me) or because it’s a shopping district (not always my thing). But downtown Ventura lived up to the hype and then some . It was a really great place to spend the afternoon.

Main Street is pedestrian-friendly. It’s closed to traffic for several blocks and there are all these fun little side alleys where you can find tons of unique, niche shops selling everything from antiques to outdoor gear to work from local artists. Some of my favorites include:

• Spicetopia : You won’t even need to ask for directions to Spicetopia . Just follow your nose – it smells amazing! This shop has every kind of spice and tea you can imagine. Not only will they let you sample things you aren’t familiar with, but they’ve also got a ton of recipes they’re happy to share too.
• Passport Habits : If there was a home décor shop that was made just for me, it would have to be this one. Passport Habits is full of global gifts and home décor that will take you back to your favorite trip – or have you planning your next one!
• Hearts Delight : How could I not love a shop that’s full of Renaissance costumes? I could’ve spent all day looking at all the gorgeous styles and fabrics.
• Industry Horror : Industry Horror is a fashion boutique that employs people with special needs. The shop is small but really cool and the mission is even cooler!
• The Calico Cat Bookshop : I really love book stores, and the Calico Cat Bookshop felt like a book treasure hunt. They had tons of rare and used books stacked everywhere, and lots of nooks and crannies to get lost in.

There are so many other great shops to pop into. Fashionistas will love Tiki Girl , Kariella , and Le Monde Emporium. Contrast is a great vintage store and Findings Market has great locally made gifts (and who says you can’t gift them to yourself?!).

Ventura is also where you can find the original Patagonia store. It’s a great place to get those outdoor essentials you forgot to pack, and there’s usually something going on there, like yoga classes and community events.

Watch the Sunset

I’m here for a good sunset over the ocean, and Ventura delivers. In fact, the sunsets alone would make Ventura the best weekend getaway from Los Angeles .

When you finish shopping til you drop on Main Street, just walk across the freeway overpass to Ventura Pier . It’s the longest wooden pier in California! The pier is full of informative placards if you want to learn more about the area or the wildlife in the area.

You can also see the Channel Islands from the beach or the pier. Watching the sun set behind them is a must-do in Ventura. It’s also a great way to get excited about day 2 of your Ventura itinerary!

Dinner at Fluid State Beer Garden

Not going to lie, I normally wouldn’t recommend a beer garden on an itinerary, but Fluid State is no ordinary beer garden. Why, might you ask? Because they sourdough pizza . Sourdough is my absolute favorite kind of bread and that combined with pizza?! Mmmmm. Just typing this is making me hungry for some.

Fluid State is located back on Main Street. If you can, grab one of the picnic tables on the patio and grab a slice of any one of their unique pizza offerings. It’s the best pizza in Ventura.

3 Days in Ventura Itinerary: Day 2

Take a day trip to channel islands national park.

No Ventura itinerary is complete without taking a day trip to Channel Islands National Park . It’s located just 50 miles off the coast and definitely tops the list of places to go in Ventura. The only way to get to the islands is by taking a ferry from Island Packers. It’s a cool trip (even if it can get really choppy on the boat). You might even see seals, dolphins, or whales!

The islands are a hiker’s paradise. Dinner at Brophy Brothers

I highly recommend grabbing dinner at Brophy Brothers in Ventura Harbor when you get off the ferry. They’re the place to go for clam chowder, and I’m here to say that their seared ahi was the perfect meal after a day of hiking. It’s the best seafood in Ventura. Plus, Ventura Harbor is a great place to catch another sunset!

3 Days in Ventura Itinerary: Day 3

So, full disclosure: I didn’t get a chance to eat at Café Nouveau . It can get busy, and it just so happened to be Mother’s Day when I tried to go, so it was busier than usual. I did check out the menu and the reviews though, so I feel confident in recommending it as a place for brunch. The beignets and blueberry corn muffins look drool-worthy and I’m SO sad I missed out and I’ll definitely be checking it out next time I’m in Ventura!

Hike the Ventura Botanical Gardens and Grant Park

Work off breakfast with a hike through the Ventura Botanical Gardens and Grant Park. It’s located on the side of a hill, so the trail is a little steep in places. But it’s mostly switchbacks and you’ll be stopping a lot to check out all the plants.

After being damaged by a fire in 2019, the gardens have undergone extensive restoration. They’re incredibly beautiful and when I was there, there were a ton of flowers and cacti blooming. Who doesn’t love an ocean hillside full of desert flowers?

I did find the delineation between the gardens and the park to be a little confusing. I’m fairly certain they’re connected and that the park is just beyond the gardens. Or the gardens are in the park? Either way, I found the Serra Cross (it’s in Grant Park), and if you follow the signs from the botanical garden, you’ll get the best view in Ventura.

Lunch at The Jolly Oyster

If you’re looking for the best lunch in Ventura, look no further than The Jolly Oyster . It’s in a great location right off the water. You can eat at one of their picnic tables, or climb over the dunes and have a beach picnic.

The oysters are super fresh, so if you’re an oyster lover, The Jolly Oyster is the best food in Ventura . If not – go somewhere else. There are a couple of other options on the menu but it’s pretty much oysters or bust (which I wasn’t mad about).

What makes The Jolly Oyster even more awesome is its sustainability mission. They have their own organic shellfish farm where they focus on minimal environmental impact. I love a place that has good food and a good mission!

Stroll along Ventura Harbor

When I got off the ferry, I was too hungry (and too tired) to explore as much of Ventura Harbor as I wanted. So I made it the perfect last stop of my weekend in Ventura before driving back to Los Angeles! The area is full of souvenir shops and restaurants and great people-watching. While you’re there, don’t forget to grab dessert from Coastal Cone . You can grab a fish-shaped waffle cone to enjoy while strolling along the waterfront.

Learn to surf.

Southern Californians love to surf and Ventura is no exception – there’s even a beach called Surfer’s Point , which is an awesome spot to watch surfers do their thing. But if surfing is something you’ve always wanted to try, there’s no better place to learn than Ventura . Pre-book a lesson (like this one ) before you go if you want to try it.

Pro tip: It can get pretty cold in the winter, and even though you’ll be wearing a wetsuit for the lesson, this is probably an activity that’s better for warmer months.

Tour the Mission San Buenaventura

The Mission San Buenaventura is small, with an equally small garden. But it’s well maintained and the historic artifacts inside (including a replica of a Michaelangelo sculpture!) are beautiful. There’s a small fee (paid at the gift shop) but it’s worth it for a peep into this historical place of worship.

Relax at San Buenaventura Beach

Unfortunately, it was a tad too cold for a beach day when I visited Ventura, so I didn’t spend as much time at San Buenaventura Beach as I would have liked. However, during warmer months, it’s a great place to spend a morning or afternoon and get your tan on. Plus, that’s where The Jolly Oyster is, so you have an excuse to eat more oysters (not that you need one!).

One of the best places to go in Ventura for history buffs is the Ventura County Museum of History & Art . It’s full of art and artifacts from the Chumash Indians and Spanish missionaries. But it’s also a great place for art lovers too and features a number of local artists.

Go on a Sunset Kayak Tour

Ventura is just 30 minutes south of Santa Barbara and if you’re itching to use your car, consider driving up for a kayak tour to watch the sunset from the water. You’ll get some seriously spectacular views of the sun sinking into the Santa Ynez Mountains and this particular tour is suitable for kayakers of all skill levels (perfect for newbies!). The tour operator provides all the equipment, so all you have to do is drive yourself down.

Where to Stay in Ventura

The best thing about Ventura is that no matter where you stay, great restaurants and activities will be within walking distance of almost any hotel you choose in the town of Ventura.

Here are some of my picks for hotels in Ventura at any budget:

Amanzi Hotel (Budget)

I highly recommend staying at the hotel where I stayed: the Amanzi Hotel Ventura . Not only is it really clean and ultra-comfortable, but the location is spectacular. It’s an easy 10-minute drive to Ventura Harbor, but if you’re staying in Ventura for a little longer, it’s walking distance both from the pier  and  Downtown Ventura. And it’s reasonably-priced to boot. Wins all around!

Crowne Plaza Ventura (Mid-range)

The Crowne Plaza Ventura is the only hotel in Ventura that actually sits on the beach . It has been recently renovated and has amenities like a pool, gym, and onsite restaurant. It’s also located between Surfer’s Point and the Ventura Pier so the location really can’t get much better. Ask for a room on the 5 th floor or higher for great ocean views.

Hotel Californian (Luxury)

For a true luxury hotel experience, you’ll need to travel up the coast to Santa Barbara (it’s a 30-45 minute drive). But if you don’t mind the drive, Hotel Californian is a stunning place to stay. It has a rooftop pool with views of the coast and the ocean that would make any visitor swoon. The whole place screams California glam, and the fabulous staff, combined with the lux digs, will have you turning your weekend getaway from Los Angeles into a week-long vacation. Just remember: The Hotel Californian isn’t in Ventura, so you’ll have to factor driving time into all your Ventura activities.

So there you have it: all the awesome things to do in Ventura! Although you can easily spend more time exploring all the fun places Ventura has to offer, three days is the perfect introduction to keep you returning again and again.

9 Incredible Things To Do In Vibrant Ventura, California

Nestled on the West Coast between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, with 9,000-foot mountain tops on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, Ventura (officially San Buenaventura) is full of history and charm, with a relaxed Southern California (SoCal) beach town vibe.

Visitors have plenty to choose from while visiting Ventura, including a lively arts scene, galleries, and museums. The vibrant downtown area is a shopper’s delight, with unique shops and dozens of local eateries.

Whether you take in the scenic views from the hilltops, sit on the beach watching the world go by, or anything in between, there’s something for everyone in Ventura.

1. Ventura Pier

No trip to Ventura is complete without visiting the Pier. Originally built in 1872 as the San Buenaventura Wharf, it is California’s oldest wooden pier. The iconic pier is close to downtown on Ventura’s central beach.

Enjoy the cool ocean breeze as you stroll along the pier. Sit on one of the many benches and watch fishermen, swimmers, and surfers. Enjoy the coastline and Channel Islands views. Grab a bite to eat on the pier or picnic on the beach below. Watch in awe as the suns sets over the Pacific.

On the pier, you’ll find a snack bar, restaurant, brewery, and restrooms. The pier is accessible but may be a bit of a walk depending on where you park. The main entrance to the closest parking is south of the pier. There is a parking structure on the north side (both have small fees). A third, and free, option is over the bridge that crosses Hwy 101. Wherever you park, wear sturdy shoes so you can enjoy your stroll.

2. Harbor Village

One of my happy places is Harbor Village in Ventura. It’s a one-stop fun, adventure, shopping, and dining destination. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and a marina on the other, it’s a perfect place to soak up the Ventura vibe. Stroll around the promenade, shop at over two dozen specialty shops and art galleries. Enjoy lunch at one of the many Village restaurants, or pick up some fresh locally caught fish from Wild Local Seafood on your way home.

Spend a couple hours or all day at Harbor Village. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a getaway without having to do much driving. There are hotels adjacent to the Village which are within walking distance, as is Harbor Cove Beach (see my beach recommendations below).

At the marina, visitors will find paddleboards and kayak rentals, harbor tours, and dinner cruises at Ventura Boat Rentals . Whale watching tours, Channel Islands tours, and sportfishing all begin at Ventura Harbor.

There is plenty of nightlife at Harbor Village, too. After dinner, take in a show at The Comedy Club or challenge yourself and your travel companions in one of The Ultimate Escape Rooms .

3. The Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center At Channel Islands National Park

Just down from Harbor Village and worth the visit is the Channel Islands Visitor Center . It’s a great little visitor center with displays of local marine life, a live tidal pool, and exhibits about the Channel Islands, gift shop, and bookstore.

Visitors will enjoy the 25-minute movie A Treasure in the Sea , narrated by Kevin Costner. Be sure to go up to the viewing tower for one of the best views of the Channel Islands and the Ventura coastline.

Time spent at the Visitor Center can be less than two hours. It is fully accessible with free parking both on site and at Harbor Village.

4. Mission San Buenaventura

Built in 1782, San Buenaventura (St. Bonaventure) is the ninth California mission founded by Padre Junipero Serra. The mission is more than just a church building. Its history is rich and colorful. The mission has endured everything from earthquakes and fires to tidal waves and even pirates. It stands today as a symbol of perseverance and hope for the future.

The mission is still an active Catholic parish celebrating Mass daily throughout the year. The interior of the mission church is just beautiful, as are the courtyard and church grounds. Last February we were fortunate enough to arrive just as morning Mass began. Afterward, we strolled the grounds, soaking in the mission’s amazing history.

In the small museum, visitors can watch a 30-minute video and see Chumash Indian artifacts and mission-era displays. There is also a gift shop which is steps from parking, including one handicap space. The museum, gift shop, and church building are all accessible.

Pro Tip: A short distance (2-minute walk) from the mission is Ventura City Hall. Originally the Ventura County Courthouse, this Neoclassical structure built in 1912 is on the National Register of Historic Places.

5. Botanical Gardens

The Ventura Botanical Gardens is a 109-acre, world-class site located in the foothills behind City Hall. The Gardens is currently home to 10,000 “low-water” plants and trees representing the world’s five Mediterranean climate zones: Southern Australia, South Africa, Central Chile, the Mediterranean Basin, and California.

The trail begins at the Welcome Center behind City Hall. There are lookout points at various spots along the trail where visitors are treated to spectacular panoramic views of the coastline, the Channel Islands, and the surrounding mountains.

The Summit Plateau is 1.25 miles (view map ) from the Welcome Center and is partially wheelchair accessible. The trail is for pedestrians only.

6. Whale Watching

Did you know that there are 28 different species of whales and dolphins off the coast of Ventura? The waters of the Santa Barbara Channel are known for their marine mammal diversity. Take a whale-watching cruise and see seals, sea lions, and several species of dolphins, along with occasional orca whale pods or migrating gray whales.

Since 1968, Island Packers Cruises has been the premier whale-watching outfit in Ventura. They offer year-round whale-watching and wildlife boat tours. Seasoned captains narrate the 3- to 3.5-hour cruise. Gray whale watching trips are from late December through mid-April while blue and humpback whale watching trips are available from mid-June through mid-September.

Pro Tip: Island Packers also offers Channel Island birding excursions , kayaking trips , plus day trips and overnight camping excursions to all the Channel Islands.

7. Ventura Beaches

Whether you want to soak up the sun, swim in the surf, hunt for seashells, or play beach volleyball, you’ll love the beaches in Ventura. Spend an hour or two, all day, or even go camping at the beach.

Emma Wood State Beach is on the northern end of Ventura. With 7,600 feet of ocean frontage, it is popular for walking, fishing, swimming, and surfing. There are also WWII artillery emplacement remains.

The campground at Emma Woods offers 80 campsites for self-contained RVs (no tents). No water, restrooms, electricity, fire rings, or dump stations are available. Dogs are allowed in the campground and day-use area but not on the beach.

Surfer’s Point Beach at Seaside Park is just that, a great surfing locale. It’s also popular for windsurfing and kiteboarding. It’s fun to just sit and watch the water activity, but it’s also a good bird-watching location. Seaside Park has picnic tables, restrooms, and showers. The promenade, a paved pathway, connects Surfer’s Point to Ventura Pier.

The Promenade also runs south from the Pier to San Buenaventura State Beach . This white-sand beach stretches for two miles to Marina Park and its own beach, where visitors are pleased to find a pirate ship “sunk” in the sand. There are three separate parking areas for San Buenaventura Beach as well as a large, free parking lot at Marina Park.

Across the street and over the dunes from Harbor Village is Harbor Cove Beach. It is a small but very nice beach, perfect for families, flying kites, and watching the boats come and go out of the harbor.

8. Eat Well

Ventura is loaded with great eateries, everything from taco shacks to five-star seafood and steak restaurants. Here are just a few of my (and the locals’) favorites.

Dinner at Prime Steakhouse is an experience. The elegant supper club is the ultimate in sophistication matched by friendly, attentive service. Open every night, Prime serves only the best USDA Prime cut steaks and seafood. Along with a full bar, dinners are paired with an award-winning wine list and handmade specialty cocktails.

If you are in the mood for seafood (and who isn’t?), family-owned Lure Fish House is the place to go in Ventura. Their seasonal menu offers classics like lobster, mussels, fish tacos, chowder, and ceviche. Of course, the fresh catch-of-the-day and a variety of oysters, including their renowned charbroiled oysters, are always on the menu. Lure is open for lunch and dinner and is located downtown on California Street.

Located in Harbor Village, Brophy Bros. is a casual, relaxed seaside restaurant with spacious waterfront patio seating. They have a great seafood selection and their chowder is off the charts. Not to worry, they also serve burgers, chicken, steak, and pasta.

9. Stay In Luxury

My two favorite places to stay in Ventura, the Crown Plaza and Clocktower Inn, are completely different.

The Crown Plaza Hotel is the only high-rise hotel in Ventura right on the beach. It is the perfect location, next to the Pier and Promenade and just two blocks from downtown.

The historic Clocktower Inn is warm and welcoming. If you’re looking for charm, look no further. The Inn is a converted 1940s firehouse located in Ventura’s downtown area, just a short walk to shops, dining, and other historical locations. For more area inspiration, consider:

12 Things to do in Ventura

Ventura, located between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, is a beautiful city full of history that is also the jumping-off point to Channel Islands National Park. The city is located right on Pacific Coast Highway and has a fun downtown, great restaurants, and a beautiful beach. I have spent a lot of time there over the years, and here are 12 spots you should explore on a visit to Ventura.

Ventura Pier

The Ventura Pier is one of the oldest and largest wooden piers in California. It is over 1,600 feet long, and it provides amazing coastal views as you walk out to the end. With over 100 years of use, the pier has been damaged and rebuilt many times over the years and is now a pedestrian and fishing pier. It’s a great place for a walk, and it has a good taco shack and brewery at the base of the pier.  

San Buenaventura State Beach

Of course, the beach is the main attraction in Ventura, and San Buenaventura State Beach is probably the most visited. This beach takes up most of the sand south of the pier, and it has small rock jetty and sand dunes that sit along the water. The beach has lots of parking, a bike trail, and a great oyster spot called The Jolly Oyster. Check the hours before you go, as it is only open a few days a week, but it is a great spot to eat or try oysters and other seafood in Ventura.

Surfer’s Point

Surfer’s Point is a rocky beach on the north side of the Ventura Pier. This beach is top-rated for surfers, and it is a great spot to hang out and watch the surfers out in the water on a sunny California day. The beach also has a nice palm tree-lined bike and walking path that runs along it if you want to get a little exercise, and you can take the path all the way down to the Ventura Pier. The parking lot is tiny here, so know that going in.

Downtown Ventura

Downtown Ventura is a fun area to walk with restaurants, breweries, thrift shops, and coffee shops. The street has been closed to cars and walking only for the last year, making for a delightful stroll with the whole family. Be sure to see the historic Ventura City Hall, built-in 1912, which is only s few blocks walk from downtown while you are there.

San Buenaventura Mission

On the western end of the downtown area is the historic San Buenaventura Mission . This mission is one of the 21 Spanish California missions dating back to the late 1700s. The mission costs to enter, and it has a small museum and a beautifully manicured courtyard. You can also enter the chapel while you are there as well, and even though it is small, it is still fun to explore.  

Ventura Botanical Gardens

The Ventura Botanical Gardens have over 8,000 different species of plants all along its 40 acres of property. The garden is much different than traditional botanical gardens, with tiered areas that you have to walk up to that hold the different gardens. It is about 2 miles to walk the entire garden, and it is a beautiful walk with stunning coastal views and lots of unique plants. Plus, you can see different things in bloom at different times of the year, giving you many reasons to go back.  

Serra Cross at Grant Park

Grant Park is a beautiful area on the hills overlooking Ventura that is a popular spot for sunset. There are many turnouts along the drive that provide great vantage points of the coastline, but the most popular is probably the Serra Cross near the top. Supposedly a cross has been in this spot since 1772, and it is a California historical landmark. I recommend visiting for sunset as it is hard to beat the views from this location.  

Marina Park

Marina Park is a beautiful public park right along the Ventura Harbor. This park has the South Jetty Marina Walk, which takes you out to the base of the rock jetty and has amazing views of the coastline and the harbor itself. Here you can watch the waves crash or boats go by as they leave the harbor. The park also has a large replica of an antique ship right in the sand. I have never seen anything like this on a California beach, and I am sure it would be fun for those traveling with families to explore.  

Ojai to Ventura Bike Path

While this recommendation probably won’t be for everyone, if you are into biking, then there is a great bike path that goes from Ojai all the way to Ventura . It is about 14 miles each way, and it is mostly flat and downhill if you leave from Ojai. I did it a few weeks back and made a full video on the trail, but it is beautiful with lots of trees and nice views, and I really enjoyed the ride.

Channel Islands

Before talking about food, I wanted to mention the Channel Islands . The Channel Islands are a national park off the coast of California that is an adventure to visit. You need at least a day to visit any of them, and they require a 1 to 3 hour boat ride. Along the way, you can often see dolphins and even whales; then, when you get to the island, you can explore until the boat comes back to pick you up. I have been to a few of them, which is an amazing area to have in California.  

Alright, these last two spots are restaurants in Ventura that I love.

Petes Breakfast House

Pete’s Breakfast House is a local diner that serves up some killer breakfast food. It was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives for its pancake roll with homemade granola. That is what I always get there as well, as it is a hearty breakfast with a large pancake roll filled with yogurt and fresh fruit. It may sound weird, but it’s awesome. There are tons of other great items on the menu as well. Get here early on the weekends as it gets busy.

Spencer Mckenzies

Spencer Mckenzies has been a road trip go-to for me in Ventura for years. This small shop on the corner of Thompson Blvd is known for its fish tacos and burritos. Their fish and shrimp burrito was even put in the top 20 burritos in America on a recent list. I love the relaxed beach vibe of the restaurant, and it’s hard for me to pass it up when I am in Ventura.

Yosemite National Park in Northern California is one of the United States' most scenic and most visited national parks. The mountains, valleys, rivers, and spectacular waterfalls have drawn tourists, artists, and athletes here for decades. For nature lovers, a visit here is one of the best things to do in California .

Most of the key sights and things to do in Yosemite National Park are in Yosemite Valley. Death Valley National Park contains some of California's most inhospitable terrain, with extreme heat that has left this desert area strangely beautiful. Salt fields, dry parched land, sand dunes, mountains, unique rock formations, and a lake that lies below sea level create a unique landscape in this remote valley.

Some of the easiest to reach highlights in Death Valley are the sand dunes near Stove Pipe Wells, Badwater Basin, Zabriskie Point, and Dantes View. These and others are all easy to reach with a regular vehicle. If you have a 4WD vehicle, you can head out to more remote places like The Race Track.

This beautiful stretch along the Central Coast of California offers a chance to get back to nature. Camping and hiking at Garrapata State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park are some of the best places for these pursuits.

Big Sur begins about four miles south of Carmel in Yankee Point and stretches along the Highway No. 1 as far as Salmon Cove, some 17 miles north of San Simeon. Stunning Lake Tahoe lies high in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and is a popular year-round vacation destination in California. Lake Tahoe is about more than just the lake, it's the forests and mountains, small towns, and multitude of activities the area offers.

The blue lake, with its turquoise coves and surrounding mountains, is a summer playground for boaters, beach goers, campers, and nature lovers. Home to the largest trees on Earth, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are bucket-list destinations . The sequoias here are the largest living things in the world, and many of them are more than 2,000 years old, with some even more than 3,000 years old.

These adjacent parks cover an area of mountains with majestic granite peaks, deep gorges, lakes, rivers, and forests, but they are quite different from each other. If you are planning on visiting both parks, you will need at least a couple of days.

Although both parks are home to the giant sequoias, Sequoia National Park is arguably the best place to visit these ancient wonders. Easy walking trails, many of them paved, meander through the trees and provide easy access to the major sites. This park is also home to Mt. Whitney, which at 14,495 feet is the highest mountain in the US (apart from Alaska).

You can find some beautiful campgrounds in Sequoia National Park , many of which are well positioned for visiting the trees and other attractions, like Moro Rock, and the famous giant sequoia known as General Sherman Tree.

Kings Canyon National Park is more rugged and wild, with jagged peaks, roaring rivers, and remote sections where you can escape the crowds and enjoy nature. This is a popular park for hiking. You'll also find some incredible campgrounds in Kings Canyon , both close to the trees, in the Grant Grove area, and in the Cedar Grove area at the far end of the 26-mile Kings Canyon Scenic Byway.

Walking through a forest of giant redwoods, towering more than 300 feet above you, feels like entering another era. Descendants of trees from the Jurassic Period, these are the tallest trees on the planet, and they are truly one of California's greatest treasures.

These jointly managed parks, which include Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Redwoods State Park, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, stretch out along a spectacular portion of Northern California Coast. Each offers something a little different, but in all of them you can find great hiking trails and beautiful campgrounds .

Joshua trees bring a type of magic to this otherwise lunar-like landscape, where giant boulders and rock formations create wild shapes that capture the imagination. The park covers 800,000 acres and offers a range of diverse sites that include much more than just the Joshua trees.

The Cholla Cactus Garden , where chollas stretch out endlessly along the hillside to the mountains beyond, the ruins of the historic Keys Ranch , the giant palms of the Lost Palms Oasis, and the vista from over 5,000 feet at Keys View are just some of the highlights. Also don't miss Skull Rock ; a huge rock resembling an alien skull.

If you are going to stay awhile, you may want to consider spending a night under the stars and trees at one of the fabulous campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park .

Joshua Tree National Park is less than a three-hour drive from Los Angeles and less than an hour from Palm Springs.

This amusement park and movie studio is one of the most popular attractions in California, and the perfect place for families with older children and teens. Rides and sets are based on famous movies, with everything from shockingly realistic simulator rides to roller coasters, and much more.

You can tour huge sets on studio tours. Some of the most popular experiences in the park are The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Fast and Furious - Supercharged, Jurassic World, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, and The Walking Dead Attraction, among others. You'll also find dining, shows, shopping opportunities, and various events held throughout the year.

Hearst Castle, officially known as the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, was started in 1919 and built over a 28-year period, resulting in a mix of architectural styles that make it quirky and stately all at the same time. Built by newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst, the 165-room castle was never completed.

It sits atop a hill at an elevation of 1,600 feet and offers fantastic views out over the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia Range. One of the major attractions here is the immense collection of art. At one time, the castle was home to the world's largest private zoo, and to this day, zebras and other exotic wildlife can be seen wandering the grounds.

The castle is located almost exactly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Drive time from either city is approximately four hours.

Part of the Channel Islands, Santa Catalina lies about 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles. The island is a popular destination with boaters and day trippers. Avalon is the main population center and where most of the action is centered. On the other end of the island is the much smaller village of Two Harbours.

While most people come to Santa Catalina Island to wander around and enjoy a day of leisure, other popular things to do include glass bottom boat tours, scuba diving, kayaking, and parasailing. You can reach the island by ferry from San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, and Dana Point.

Channel Islands National Park, made up of five individual islands, is a great place to see wildlife and a little undisturbed nature. Having always been isolated from the mainland, the islands have developed independently, and as a result, have many endemic animals.

The islands are located off the Southern California coast and are only accessible by park concessionaire boats and planes, or private boats. You can learn about current conditions and arrange transport at the mainland visitor centers located in Ventura and Santa Barbara.

The Getty Center is one of the premier museums in the United States. The museum holds treasures by great artists like Monet and Van Gogh, along with sculptures and other beautiful forms of art prior to 1900.

A visit here is also about the architecture and grounds of the museum itself. The building flows and undulates in a shimmering curtain of white, while out front, intricate gardens and waterfalls complete the scene. Be sure to check out the amazing views out over Los Angeles from one of the many patios.

If you've ever wanted to lie by the pool in the morning and make snow angels in the afternoon, put a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway on your list of California things to do. California's desert regions are all about elevation. The higher you go, the colder it gets. In the spring, the pool and snow combo is easily accomplished.

The tramway runs for two miles and ascends up to an elevation of 8,516 feet on the slopes of Mount Jacinto. The tramway is unique in its design; each of the trams rotate as they ascend, allowing for uninterrupted views across a 360-degree panorama. In fact, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the largest of its kind in the world.

At the top, choose to be active by walking or hiking on the 50 miles of trails, or more sedate by enjoying a spectacular view over lunch or dinner at one of the two restaurants. This area offers some of the best hiking around Palm Springs .

One of California's greatest free attractions is the Griffith Observatory. Perched high on Mount Hollywood and overlooking the city of Los Angeles, this iconic California attraction offers not only fantastic views out over the city but also the opportunity to learn about the heavens.

Inside the observatory are six galleries devoted to all aspects of space and how we observe it. In addition to the galleries are the public telescopes, allowing you to view the heavens in a way you've never imagined.

Even if all that doesn't interest you, the parking lot is an excellent spot to get a photo of the Hollywood sign.

If you've ever wanted to explore a giant aircraft carrier and find yourself in San Diego, you are in luck. Moored right in the center of the action, the USS Midway Museum is a real-life WWII ship that has been converted to a hands-on museum.

An ideal family thing to do in San Diego , this is no boring museum. Here, you and your crew will be walking down narrow passageways, climbing ladders, and descending into the bowels of the ship. Throughout the ship are more than 60 exhibits, 29 restored aircraft, a theater, and flight simulators. Plan for three to four hours for your visit.

Founded in 1913, the Museum of Ventura County is your go-to site for art and historical facts about Ventura County. Throughout its 100+ years, the Museum has made it its mission to preserve and celebrate the rich history of Ventura and to share it with all who step through its doors. Pioneered by Dr. Cephas Bard, the first American physician in Ventura, the Museum of Ventura County opened with numerous artifacts and curious which range from priceless Chumash and Mexican- American objects to prints of the first ever Ventura newspaper. The Museum’s collections, exhibitions, education programs, and research library are designed to be a gathering place for the community to inspire curiosity and conversation about the past and the stories of who we are and what makes us unique.

Stop by the Museum to tour the many rotating exhibits or come by on any Thursday for Munch. Munch (music + lunch) is held every Thursday from 11:30 to 1:30 with live music from a local musician and free admission into all the galleries and exhibits. If Thursdays aren’t the best days for you then stop by for the Museum’s Free First Sundays. With many interactive games and arts and crafts for the kids, the first Sunday of every month is a great day to bring the whole family to the Museum for free admission while enjoying a relaxing fun-filled day for all.

Father Junipero Serra founded 21 missions along California’s 600 miles of beautiful coastline. Mission San Buenaventura was the ninth of these missions founded in 1782.

Father Junipero Serra named the city after Saint Bonaventure, hence the nickname that Ventura is the “city of good fortune.”

Ventura’s first courthouse, wharf, bank, and public library were built almost a century later, in 1873. Numerous of these buildings remain in Ventura’s downtown as historical sites.

Moreton Bay Fig Tree was planted in the 1874 and provided shade for band concerts, political rallies, and war bond drives during WWII.

Valdez Alley is the walkway where the handsome 1820 Ramon Valdez adobe once stood as the first polling place where all nine eligible voters cast their ballots for Abraham Lincoln in 1860.

The first City Council meeting minutes were recorded in Spanish, the primary language when the city was incorporated in 1866.

In 1992, archaeologists discovered an elaborate  lavanderia , or laundry, with a 26 by 30-foot washing pool under the Peirano’s Market building, constructed by Chumash mission converts as part of the aqueduct system during the early 1800s.

Father Junipero Serra’s motto was  Siempre adelante. Nunca atras. Always go forward. Never turn back.

Ventura County once billed itself as the lima bean capital of the world.

Father Junipero Serra, praised by Pope Francis as one of the founding father’s of the United States who departed from Spain to spread the Christian message in the New World, was canonized in September 2015, in Washington D.C.

Father Junipero Serra was the first saint to be canonized on American soil.
