Nice and clean Accommodation

The Tourist Hotel in Arba Minch is situated in town within a short distance by taxi or autorickshaw to the airport. It is set back off the main road and the rooms all surround a large central area used for eating, drinking and chatting. Trees and shrubs allow privacy and shade. The food is varied and good and although they offer western cuisine, it is the traditional Ethiopian menu that appeals.

A good start point for the Omo Valley

Hotels are very hit and miss, and we never see consistency and quality, even in hotels we return to. Hometown Addis is a refreshing exception. The staff was very friendly and warm, the facilities were clean and built with quality materials. Its a quick drive to and from the airport and has an excellent pizza restaurant 1 minute walk from the hotel.

I always sanitize the floor and bathroom when I arrive. This is the 1st hotel in Ethiopia that I have stayed at in which the cloth came away clean.

One room ended up having very wet carpet and smelt terrible. So many things within the rooms not working. Every order of food took a really long time and was poor quality. Staff didn't take responsibility for any of the issues. The worst place I've stayed in a long time. There are many better options that are also cheaper in the area. Avoid at all costs. (Location is decent)

Jupiter International Hotel - Cazanchis

I had some problems in Addis but I felt in Jupiter like at home, everyone was extremely helpful and I can recommend this hotel on the best. Here I just to thank to everyone and thanks for all the help I got.

Ark Hotel Addis

Staff that was there was great! I had an issue with my phone charger and they helped me take care of it right away even though it was VERY late at night. My bed was comfortable for the one night that I was there. Wish I could have stayed for breakfast to check that out - had to leave early in the morning.

Ag Palace Hotel

I arrived late at night and was warmly welcomed and food and drink were available. My room was comfortable and clean. The staff were very helpful. I felt they were eager to make my stay a happy one. I was very impressed. If I ever have the happy chance to go back to Ethiopia this hotel would definitely be my hotel of choice in Addis Ababa.

Very clean, all the required amenities were there and a very comfortable stay. Staff very polite and attentive based on my experience. I had no issues on delivery of service. Suggestions for Improvements: I would recommend more variety on the breakfast side for vegetarians. I had requested some items from the staff but these were not available. All in all, a good stay in a comfortable hotel.

This might be one of the upper end hotels in Addis, but seemed dumpy for a Hilton. The carpets are worn, and is in real need of an update. Everyone was very helpful and nice, and service was very good. Having Ethiopia Air right there was very helpful. Good security, and this was a place I would go back to, though it seems much more geared to the business traveler

They changed me more than the price was listed online I booked online then I god charged 50 dollars more

Jupiter is an excellent option, close to shopping, restaurants and the airport. Rooms are nice, with modern furnishings, and breakfast is quite good. What really makes the hotel special is the high level of attention and courtesy from the staff. The front desk staff make every effort to help, including arranging transport or providing for the hotel shuttle to pick up items for shopping. During my stay, Kidist in particular was a fantastic advisor on the area, and arranged for purchase of local foods. She also arranged for the hotel to pick me up from the airport when my departure flight was delayed - that allowed me to stay in the comfort of the hotel and have a decent meal, rather than wait at the airport. Note that there is no gym on site, but the hotel provides complimentary vouchers for a professional gym close by. Overall, an excellent option in Addis.

Monarch Hotel

Good value for the price and a good location for the visitor to Addis Ababa. Short drive to the Airport and in the middle of many restaurants and bars. The breakfast buffet is excellent and a mix of Ethiopian and western options. The staff are very friendly and helpful. As a bonus, Café Rigel, directly across the street has the best lattes I have ever had.

Airport transfer - advised driver would wait inside the terminal - no he didn't. Website advises buffet breakfats and free wifi. Day 1 no no buffet - advised this is only done between 9am and 10am, not earlier. Free wifi - well, it's free, but it doesn't work - 10 days/nights we had a few hours of actually working internet. Restaurant (compared to similar hotels in the vicinity - bad and overpriced (we usually were the only guests). English - just a few selected staff. One receptionist with a particular bad attitude (advice: you don't want to work there - resign!). Wakeup call (checkout) 15 minutes late. Sadly the space here is limited - many more issued. Overpriced compared to similar hotels in the vicinity. Avoid this hotel.

Lots of choices for food and a good location in terms of reaching the airport and getting to the light rail system for traveling around town. Saro-Maria Hotel

Airport transfers wqerge included in the room cost as we're airport transfers. The staff were all very friendly and have 24 hr room service, the food was excellent.. I was traveling with two small children and felt very safe!

I traveled to Addis Ababa for day visit. The hotel, the employees or staff were great …. Excellent. The restaurant food was delicious. Very quiet hotel, had a great view of the city and quick access to the markets. I will return and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

It is great & all team are professionals. Specialy thank you the manager or owner. I stay in ethiopia different hotels.I never see such great service. I feel like my home.pick me from Airport and drop me back to air port.most hotel they did not such great service.

Keba Guest House

We had a really pleasant stay at Melala B&B, the people were really nice. They came to pick us up at the airport late at night (for free!) and helped us with all the information we needed. The B&B is clean, the room big and nice, in a small street that is not to busy. It's a quiet place to relax at the beginning or the end of your Ethiopian trip.

Bath broken shower not working.

Lobby

It is a very clean and comfortable. The staff were incredibly friendly and polite, great value for money.I will definitely come again.

This hotel was clean, there was decent food, but it is not safe for ladies. Street local guys can easily enter and bother women. I have nothing against decent locals, I am talking about street guys who try to get some money from tourists or to pick up a western woman. I have nothing against decent locals, I am talking about street guys who try to get some money from tourists or to pick up a western woman. Once a bunch of them entered the hotel restaurant and started bothering me. I had to leave. Same story was with the hotel driver (local) who was taking me to a far away church. He was disrespectful and was trying to touch me. I would not recommend this hotel for women.

Crown Hotel

I had to leave when I want to get a message and the woman asked me if I had took a shower that morning, I told her what, she asked me again, I said forget it, she said OK I'll give you a message, I said I don't want you to do nothing for me, I then told the manager, he told me he will report her but she is responsible for her own area, I said I know I only stay one day...

It's so sad this clown lost money by being stupid, and argent! Before I take any massage I take showers, I couldn't believe everywhere you go people still the same. I didn't let is spoil my trip but I couldn't stay there again.

Entrance

The room is clean, staff is very helpful. The location is quite difficult to find as its not on main road, so make use of the airport shuttle they provide.

Lobby

Excellent service mind, staff are very kind and nice. Comfortable room and good location. Next time in Addis Ababa I will choose Momona hotel again

Entrance

I had a good time here, it is close to many interesting places for Addis night life. Best place to stay for making it to the airport on time. The owner "Abbi" is a great help, he drove me around town for free to help me arrange tours. He even helped push down the tour prices, Really Appreciate it, thanks again Abbi. Very much want to return.

Sabon Hotel

Good place with fairly fast internet. Staff are very helpful and the location is excellent.

Super expensive ...not worth the money at all...

Honey Land Hotel Lalibela

Honey Land Hotel, staff, and Lilibella has been my best experience while traveling through Ethiopia (5 weeks). The staff at the hotel are kind, generous and go out of the way to please their customers. The hotel facilities are great . In addition the hotel provides tours to the local attractions at a good price.

Entrance

Highly recommended place to stay. It is near to most tourist locations. Since Addis is a walkable city, it was easy for me to go around from the hotel (even Entoto mountain).

Old Abyssinia Lodge

Good simple food.

The room smelled like backed-up sewer but otherwise was okay although there was no power or water until late that night.

Weygoss Guest House

This is a good accommodation facility considering “The best Value for Money”. My 2nd-time stay was much comfortable with all uninterrupted service.

Rahnile Hotel

Clean hotel good food nice dining area and well situated. short walk ro St George Church , the lakefront and business area .

I have stayed in lots of hotels in Ethiopia and in Addis in particular. I have just booked my 4th stay at the Kaleb Hotel. I have found the staff there to be excellent and attentive. This is the best hotel that I have stayed at. The receptionist (Kobob) was excellent and always helpful and extremely friendly and professional at all times. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The breakfast is probably the best that I have had in Ethiopia. There is always a great atmosphere at the hotel. Busy in the evenings in a nice bar, but you are never disturbed by the noise in your room. Internet is good; rooms are clean. Choose this hotel. Great value. Great staff. I would not have just booked my fourth stay if it was no good.

Wudasie Castle Hotel

Clean, comfortable - and the staff went out of their way to be helpful. Would stay there again if I were in that part of Ethiopia as a traveler.

I read a great review about the Caravan Hotel in my guide book. After searching a little, I decided to secure a reservation. I think my stay there was the highlight of my visit! The free shuttle picked me up from the airport with minimal waiting time. I was greeted by a very charming front desk person who got me checked in. I arrived around 6:30 am and was granted access to the included breakfast, which was pretty tasty. My room was spacious. After a nice shower, I headed out to explore the city. I did have a little trouble finding the hotel at the end of day since it is a little off the main road, but some local residents helped me out (and it added to my adventure!). Upon my return, I had a restful nap on the comfortable bed before being shuttled back to the airport. The value was excellent!

And no warning. It is the principle that counted, not the exchange rte as such. Equally surprised when breakfast room attendant turned off light over table, without saying anything, because it was 10am, end of breakfast time. Customer first? Hmmm. Nevertheless, it was a repeat stay and overall it was good.

Haikan Hotel

It was made memorable solely on account of some wonderful staff and flexible admin. Without much a do and nothing extra we were given a suite as the room initially given was too small for us. It is definitely a 'value for money' hotel.

She drove me around Addis, shared meals with me, showed me the sights, and became a wonderful friend. She is very helpful and extremely accommodating! The guesthouse itself is very beautiful... the photos don't do it justice. My room was huge and extremely comfortable, and the design of the whole place is fantastic! Agadey, who works for Genet, cooks incredible meals... not only did I have included breakfast but often had lunch and dinner there as well, and the food is easily the best I've had in Ethiopia. The location is great - there is a main road a short walk away with some shops, cafes, and supermarkets if there's anything you need. Addis is quite spread out so you'll need a driver to get to many places, but if Genet doesn't drive you herself, she'll arrange a wonderful driver for you.

The Hotel is very clean, staffs are very friendly. Only the issue is the water in the bath room is very hold or very cold. And the price is high compared the facilities/condition of the hotel. It can be 3 star hotel, not a 4 star..!

I shall stay in this hotel again in next trip.

This was a very upsetting trip. I became ill and had to go to hospital. The staff, housekeeping and room service all accommodated my needs 100% when I returned back to the hotel. On a separate note, my travel companion had an incident while out at a concert. The staff at the hotel worked tirelessly to assist us with the aftermath of the issue and to help us resolve the issues surrounding the incident. The staff from top to bottom could not have been nicer and more accommodating. Even once we returned home, they were following up with us inquiring as to our well being. The rooms were spacious, spotless and wonderful linens. The food via room service was excellent. Due to my illness, we ate via room service for several days.

Lobby

The Radisson was very modern and clean, with fantastic staff (so friendly). Of course the price is high being Addis Ababa, but better than the Sheraton and Hilton.

Ethiopia’s hotel industry needs help to encourage tourism

The global tourism industry has huge economic importance. It contributes 10% of the world’s gross domestic product and 6% of exports. One billion people a year travel somewhere in the world.

Africa’s natural and cultural points of interest give the continent tremendous tourism potential. This shows in the numbers . In 2015, the sector generated USD$ 36 billion in Africa (7% of all exports in the region), up from USD$ 10 billion in 2000. Travel and tourism also directly supports 466,000 jobs. It’s expected that by 2030 the number of tourists will reach 134 million annually.

But African countries’ tourism industries are often constrained by a lack of infrastructure development, air connectivity and financing.

Ethiopia, in East Africa, is an example. The country has immense natural, cultural and historical attractions, but is a largely untapped tourism market. It suffers from a lack of infrastructure and the negative publicity the country received after the famine in the 1980s and various conflicts. It needs to make a big effort to market its potential and develop the measures to support the industry.

Ethiopia’s tourism sector showed a steady increase in the last decade. International tourist arrivals rose from 64,000 in 1990 to 680,000 in 2013 and are expected to reach 815,000 by 2024. This 2024 figure would mean a contribution of USD$2 billion to the country’s GDP. Over the next five years the sector is expected to create over a million jobs, or 3.6% of total employment.

Comfortable hotels play a vital role in attracting tourists. After the fall of the communist government 27 years ago, Ethiopia started privatising most of the state owned hotels and tourism establishments. To support this, the government adopted a policy that allows duty-free imports of hotel furniture, fixtures and equipment. It also provides for favourable loans to investors for the construction of new rated hotels.

But, while the hotel industry is growing, the number of available hotel rooms is still the lowest. In terms of room availability, Ethiopia is globally ranked 134 out of 140, compared to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania at positions 122, 121 and 118 respectively. Furthermore, there are few hotels of an international standard, and many are old and unattractive. Infrastructure to support the hotels is lacking. There are no zoning policies to establish the areas where hotels should be constructed, or tourist activities to complement them when they are built.

Hotel performance

Until recently , Ethiopia did not have enough hotels recognised under international rankings or ratings – they generously awarded themselves their own stars. This made it hard for visitors to judge the quality of a hotel. This changed in 2015 when the Ethiopian government, with the help of World Tourism Organisation, started rating hotels in the country. Though participation in the grading process is mandatory, the graded hotels still haven’t undergone annual audits to ensure they’re keeping up with the standard they were awarded.

Ethiopia also only has six internationally branded and managed hotels. This is a very low figure bearing in mind that the average number of tourists per year is nearly 700,000 and these six hotels have a combined total of less than 1,500 rooms. By comparison, Nairobi in neighbouring Kenya already hosts most of the international hotel brands – and expects 13 more to open their doors over the next five years.

There are also only three five star hotels in Ethiopia and the majority of the “rated” hotels which guarantee a certain standard of service are situated in the capital, Addis Ababa. Other hotels, rated only by online travel agents based on the guests’ comments and with fewer than 100 rooms, are scattered throughout major towns. This is a problem because most of the tourist attractions are located in the countryside. There is also a scarcity of budget facilities, like youth hostels, to cater for budget travellers and backpackers.

Another major issue is the hotel structures. After the fall of the communist regime, from 1995, Ethiopia started privatising. Over 287 enterprises were transferred from the public to the private sector – out of which 34, or 11.8%, were hotels. The aim was to improve economic efficiency, stimulate the private sector and mobilise more foreign and domestic investment. However, the process has been weighed down with problems which include ; corruption, loss of jobs and a lack of ownership and transparency. The state retains control of many of the most valuable assets in the sector. These are not well maintained, as they are about to be privatised. For example, Addis Ababa’s Hilton hotel, completed in 1987, now needs urgent refurbishment.

Finally, the hotel industry needs to be supported by tourism infrastructure. It needs physical facilities like car parks, sewerage and water works, transport projects and roads. These have to be based on zoning policies, to establish where the hotels should be built. With the exception of Addis Ababa, there are also hardly any offerings of recreational or entertainment activities like parks, concerts or cinemas. And there are logistical gaps like the lack of adequate ATM machines and foreign exchange bureaus outside Addis Ababa. This means visitors need to carry large amounts of cash in local currency, which is inconvenient and unsafe.

To spur tourism growth and development, Ethiopia must improve the hotel industry and the infrastructure that supports it. It will take the cooperation of all stakeholders – government, hotel professionals, hotel owners and hotel trade associations – to achieve a competitive and sustainable sector.
