Madonna di Campiglio, the pearl of the Brenta Dolomites

Madonna di Campiglio sits at 1550 metres above sea level, in the beautiful basin between the Brenta Dolomites group and the Adamello and Presanella glaciers . Launched as a tourist destination in the second half of last century, the “pearl of the Dolomites” became an exclusive holiday resort for the Austrian and Mitteleuropa nobility and wealthy bourgeoisie. Its visitors, in 1889 and 1894, included Princess Sissi and Emperor Franz Joseph.

In 1910, the winter beauty of Madonna di Campiglio was discovered by a group of “English skiers”. Thereafter, it acquired the reputation as one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the Alps. Since then, the area has become part of skiing history, thanks also to the major international sporting events it hosts, such as the 3Tre FIS Ski World Cup.

Points of interest

Church of Santa Maria Antica Built in 1894 and 1895 by local entrepreneur Franz Joseph Österreicher, this neo-Gothic church in Tyrolean style replaced the previous church that was attached to the residence. It was situated between two sections of the new Hotel Des Alpes, which Österreicher had recently inaugurated. The Austrian imperial family financed some of the interior decor , which remains visible to this day, as well as Österreicher’s sepulchre. It remained the town’s main church until 1972, when the new, larger Church of Santa Maria Nuova was erected nearby. The smaller church preserves a number of particularly important works of art, including the crucifix and the late- Gothic altar .

Canalone Miramonti Designed in 1940 by a commission chaired by Bruno Detassis , mountaineer and director of Madonna di Campiglio’s first ski school, Canalone Miramonti is the area’s legendary ski run . In 1967, this highly challenging run, featuring marked changes in slope, played host to the first men’s World Cup event to be held in Italy . It has since been the site of a great many Alpine Ski World Cup and European Cup events, as well as junior alpine ski world championships and snowboard and freestyle world championships. Canalone Miramonti is now home to the 3Tre , a historic event created in 1948 that has since become a fixture on the International Ski Federation calendar.

Monument dedicated to Alpine Guides Not far from Piazza Righi in the centre of town, there is a stunning sculpture created by the well-known monk Silvio Bottes . Inaugurated in 1974, this monument depicts a tall, granite boulder featuring a bronze sculpture of an alpine guide climbing the rock face .

Monument to G.B. Righi Giovanni Battista Righi , an entrepreneur originally from Strembo, was a great advocate of tourism in Madonna di Campiglio . In 1912, in commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of his passing, a monument was dedicated to him. This large granite sculpture is a symbolic representation of the mountains and features a bronze effigy of Righi as well as the shield and eagle coat of arms of the area’s association of mountaineers. The sculpture was created by the Trentino artist Remo Stringari.

Salone Hofer (Hofer Hall) Salone Hofer, a stunning ballroom located within Hotel Des Alpes , was created towards the end of the 1800s during the reign of Franz Joseph Österreicher. The hall is elaborately decorated with frescoes and other decorations created in 1896 and 1897 by the Bolzano artist Gottfried Hofer , from whom the hall gets its name. These works miraculously survived a fire in 2007.

Hofer’s paintings include a canvas depicting the Virgin Mary appearing to a number of shepherd boys on Monte Spinale, portraits of Franz Joseph I and Elisabeth of Bavaria, a brown bear (the symbol of Madonna di Campiglio), and numerous floral, natural, and mythological figures in Art Nouveau style . Salone Hofer is a ballroom of great historical and cultural value , which has been officially recognized by the Province of Trento’s Authority of Architecture, and has hosted balls attended by illustrious guests from the Habsburg empire in the late 1800s.

Piazza Righi Madonna di Campiglio’s central square is named after local entrepreneur Giovanni Battista Righi, originally from Strembo. He purchased the remnants of Campiglio’s first residence and transformed the structure, in 1872, into a modern hotel. He named the hotel Stabilimento Alpino (Alpine establishment) in dedication to the emerging alpine tourism industry here. Righi also constructed the road connecting Campiglio, Pinzolo and Val Rendena in 1874 and 1875. In 1887, Franz Josef Österreicher, transformed the establishment into the new Grand Hotel Des Alpes. When the hotel welcomed the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph and Princess Sissi, in the 1890s, other entrepreneurs began erecting the area’s first residences around what is now Piazza Righi. The square began to take on its current form in the 1920s and it achieved its definitive form towards the end of the 1930s.

Il Giardino di Campiglio (Campiglio Gardens) Not far from the town’s lake, you will find Il Giardino di Campiglio (Campiglio Gardens), a delightful area dedicated to local residents and tourists alike, created by the District of Ragoli in 2014. Within the gardens, there is a vast park with a great many view points and short trails that tell the story of Madonna di Campiglio.

The ski jumping hill Winter sports are about more than just downhill and slalom, and history has included many disciplines, including spectacular events such as ski jumping that took place in the Palù area , where a medium-sized ski jumping hill was constructed in the 1930s. This hill was used for many events until the early 1940s, but was abandoned after World War II as interest grew in alpine skiing and ski jumping was gradually relegated to being something of a niche event. Nonetheless, the remnants of this curious relic from the past are still visible to this day as a sort of testament to the past, present and future of winter sports here in the Campiglio area.

The “Sissi Stone” Just a short walk from the town centre along the path that runs from the Church of Santa Maria Antica to Monte Spinale, there is a small, panoramic area called “Piazza Imperatrice” (Empress Square) including “Il Sasso di Sissi” (Sissi’s Stone), which, it is said, was once a favourite resting spot for Elisabeth of Bavaria on her frequent outings during her visits to the area.

The Brenta Dolomites On June 26, 2009 , in Seville (Spain), the Dolomites has been named a World UNESCO Heritage site , for its particular geological excellence . Formed of dolomite rock, a crystalline, sedimentary mineral created from the sedimentation of limestone, coral, and seashells, the Dolomites are a uniquely spectacular mountain range with majestic spires and dizzying cliff faces. The particular composition of its rock formations also results in spectacular sunsets in which the mountains themselves turn pink.

Adamello-Presanella The Adamello-Presanella group is the other mountain range that defines the Rendena valley. Here, the mountains are largely formed of tonalite rock (a hard, compact rock that is similar to granite) that itself was formed out of magma that rose through the earth’s crust and was trapped here. Reaching as high as 3,500 meters (11,500 ft) in altitude, over time this mountain range favoured the creation of vast glaciers along the highest summits and plateaus.

Campo Carlo Magno Pass The name of the pass Campo Carlo Magno is the result of the legend that tells how Charles the Great had stopped with his army at the pass between the Val di Sole and the Val Rendena in the 1800s, during the journey to Rome to be crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. With its striking view of the Pietra Grande, in summer it is home to the Madonna di Campiglio Golf Club , one of the first to have been built in Italy in 1923 as a project by the great English golfer Sir Henry Cotton. In winter, however, it is a white expanse where there are more than 20 km of cross-country ski tracks .

Museum of the Guides and People of Campiglio Established in 2009, this small museum offers an intriguing, detailed look at the rise and development of mountaineering in the Rendena valley . Set up in a number of rooms of Chalet Laghetto, the museum features vintage climbing equipment, photos and portraits that date back to the early days of mountaineering, and other information on some of the most famous figures from this glorious past, such as the legendary Bruno Detassis, the “King of the Brenta”.

Lime factories in Mondifrà and Fontanella Both along the road from Campo Carlo Magno Pass to Malga Mondifrà and in the Fontanella area of Madonna di Campiglio, you will find the remnants of buildings once used for the production of lime . (The first is clearly recognizable thanks to restoration efforts, while only a few sections of wall remain in the second location). At one time, the production of lime was an important component of local economies, as it was used both in construction and to enrich feed for livestock, to fertilize crops, to clean clothes, and to disinfect.

Madonna di Campiglio: a slalom between the slopes and sophistication

TN Madonna di Campiglio

The pearl of the Dolomites is situated in the heart of the largest ski resort in Trentino, which includes the Brenta Dolomites, Adamello group, Presanella group, and Tonale and Stelvio passes. On top of its 150 km of pistes—including renowned pistes that have hosted the World Ski Championships—it boasts an elegant atmosphere, subtle sophistication and irresistible shopping.

Betting on tourism

Madonna di Campiglio: betting on tourism

At 1,550 metres above sea level and surrounded by the Brenta Dolomites and the glaciers of the Adamello group, Madonna di Campiglio owes its epic transformation, from a quaint mountain village to the ultimate ski tourism resort, to a local timber merchant. Giovanni Battista Righi realised the area’s potential back in 1868, when he bought an old monastery and converted it into a hotel. Many others soon took the same gamble, and just a few years later Madonna di Campiglio became a tourist hotspot. Notable guests have included Franz Joseph I of Austria and his wife Sissi , who both enjoyed strolling through the valleys.

After the Second World War, some entrepreneurs from Lombardy decided to invest in state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities in the area. Traces of its glorious past can still be found today in the traditional stubes and elegant hotels in the town centre . Oh, and make sure not to leave Madonna di Campiglio without first pausing to admire the Hofer Hall at the Grand Hotel Des Alpes.

Downhill or cross-country, snowboarding or ice skating: something for everyone.

Downhill or cross-country, snowboarding or ice skating

Nestled among enchanting lakes, woods and waterfalls, Madonna di Campiglio offers boundless skiing across a spectacular and varied mountain environment, with kilometres of slopes with various difficulty ratings.

Downhill skiing not your thing? Try out some Nordic skiing, immersing yourself in the pristine nature of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park . The Campo Carlo Magno cross-country ski centre offers 22 km of trails, while the Pinzolo-Carisolo cross-country ski centre hosts a delightful 5-km trail with artificial snow and night lighting.

If you love snowboarding, we recommend checking out the two beloved snow parks: Ursus (and Mini Ursus, which is perfect for the kids), accessible by the Grosté Pass cable car, and Brenta Snow Park in Pinzolo, served by the Grual chairlift, which offers 18 facilities to meet the needs of all guests, absolute beginners and seasoned experts alike. If ice skating is right up your alley, you have the choice of the Madonna di Campiglio lake for a refreshing adventure en plein air , or the Pinzolo Ice Arena, where you can experience skating on an Olympic ice rink.

Pinzolo

A visit to Pinzolo, a town where time stands still

Speaking of Pinzolo, if you’re in search of a more authentic and stimulating atmosphere, you’re sure to be enthralled by this small town in Val Rendina.

The path less travelled compared to Madonna di Campiglio, but by no means any less enchanting, Pinzolo retains the traditional flavour of the mountain resorts of the good old days. The historic centre flaunts colourful, decorative age-old buildings, as well as the 16th-century church of San Vigilio, which houses works by Simone Baschenis, a renowned painter from Bergamo who is best known for his Danse Macabre frescoes.

Pinzolo is also home to Val Genova, known as the “valley of waterfalls”: admiring the gushing cascades of the Nardis waterfalls, among the highest in Trentino, is a truly magical experience.

The Borgo Salute thermal baths in Caderzone Terme, not far from Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo, flow with Sant'Antonio ferruginous spring water, which is ideal for respiratory and vascular treatments. As well as a section for hydroponic and inhalation therapies and balneotherapy, there is a wellness area that offers a swimming pool, a sauna, hydro-massage, a Turkish bath, a Kneipp path and beauty treatments. These thermal baths were born out of the redevelopment of some of the village's historic buildings.

Madonna di Campiglio | Ski Resort Review

From the Madonna di Campiglio piste map to the best ski hire and après ski bars, here is the lowdown on skiing in this picturesque ski resort in Italy's Brenta Dolomites, north of Lake Garda.

Madonna di Campiglio is one of the world's best ski resorts, and certainly one of Italy's most famous, certainly domestically, ranking up there with Cortina d'Ampezzo as one of the brightest jewels in the country's crown.

Sitting at 1,550m, with 150km of well-groomed, mostly intermediates pistes supported by great snowmaking, it offers a hugely enjoyable ski area, with access lifts coming right down into the town. Almost all the key trails are served by modern, comfortable chairs and gondolas. The terrain stretches to Folgarida in the north, and Pinzolo in the south.

Madonna di Campiglio is also a very chic resort, staging the kind of grand balls and polo-on-ice tournaments that you might otherwise find in a place like St Moritz - but the prices here are nothing like those you'd encounter in the Swiss resort, and the scenery, if anything is more stunning. The Rendena Valley is dominated by the towering peaks of the Brenta Dolomites - spires of red rock jutting straight up into the sky.

The area has a long and storied history, but had been in a period of decline for around 150 years when skiing first began here in the 1930s. The resort really took off again in the '50s, and most of the local population are now employed in the tourism industry. Trentino is now one of the wealthiest regions in Italy, and unusually for a top European resort, the vast majority of Madonna's clientele is domestic.

Madonna di Campiglio - Ski Map & Pistes:

Madonna's excellent ski area extends over 150km, with fully-integrated lift links via Monte Vig over to the two purpose-built centres of Marilleva and Folgarida in the Val di Sole. The slopes are varied and the terrain extensive, with long, confidence-building blue runs, as well as some 'light' reds. These are great for building up to tackle the 22 percent of pistes that are rated black. The best of these is on Monte Spinale, heading towards Marilleva.

Madonna di Campiglio Ski Map

Overall, Madonna offers wonderful terrain for intermediate skiers, who will find long cruising trails through the forest and plenty to explore between the different sectors of the ski area. The feeling of discovery is perhaps enhanced because, whichever route you take, you will emerge above the tree-line, but then descend back into it to reach the base of the next lift, before popping out again.

Madonna's near neighbour, the lovely village of Pinzolo, comes with its own medium-sized ski area below Doss del Sabion, complete with modern lifts. On the other side the Val de Sole the resorts of Passo Tonale (with its high altitude, year round, glacier skiing), and the slightly more distant slopes of Pejo, above the old village famous for its thermal springs, are also included on the area ski pass, as is Monte Bondone, next to the biggest nearby city, Trento.

Back in Madonna beginners are often collected from their hotels or the ski school office and taken on a mini bus up to the gentle nursery slopes of Campo Carlo Magno, away from the busy main slopes. From these beginnings it's easy to start touring the whole area by the end of your first week.

Madonna di Campiglio - Off-Piste, Backcountry & Ski Touring:

Madonna di Campiglio is not generally renowned for its off-piste, but if you know where to look (or better still, hire a guide who does) there are some great runs to be had here. If the snow's good, there are some nice lines down from Monte Spinale down through the trees.

If you're happy to strap on skins and go touring, your options become exponentially more exciting. Ride the lift up to the top of the Passo Grosté and you have the whole of the Brenta Dolomites to explore, or head up the other side and you're into the Adamello Brenta National Park.

Madonna di Campiglio - Restaurants, Bars & The Town:

Madonna di Campiglio is a pretty Alpine town with a smart, car-free centre. Nearby is a small park and a lake which is used for skating and there are some good cross country trails in the valley.

There are some buzzy bars for après, especially at the foot of Monte Spinale. Food throughout the resort is also usually a highlight, both at the many excellent mountain restaurants and in town. Over recent years, gourmet dining has become a huge feature in the area.

Here, three Michelin-starred restaurants can tempt diners looking for the best in Italian cuisine, including Il  Gallo Cedrone , the Ristorante Dolomieu  and the Stube Hermitage . But even if your pockets are not that deep, Madonna can cater for most tastes - so long as you like Italian food!

Madonna has a reputation for its après ski that rivals that for its actual skiing. 'People watching' begins as soon as the lifts close. In most places around the resort the bars and restaurants retain quiet sophistication until the small hours, when the legendary nightclubs really start to buzz. If you're visiting at a busy holiday weekend, some stay open through to the time when the lifts re-open in the morning . Bars worth checking out include Ober 1 , the Home Stube  and . the up-market Cantina Suisse  which is popular for cocktails and has live music until midnight.

Off-slope activities include dog-sledding, tobogganing, paragliding, ice climbing and a wealth of spas and wellness centres, as well as galleries, delis and smart shops. -- Want hassle-free car rental? Book now

Madonna di Campiglio - Ski Hire:

There are plenty of options for ski and snowboard hire in Madonna di Campiglio, including Rental del Brenta  and Olimpionico Sport 2 .

Madonna di Campiglio - Ski School:

If you want to learn to ski in Madonna di Campiglio, there are many options including the Adamello Brenta Ski School , the Nazionale des Alpes  and the Italian Ski Academy .

My Favourite Walks in Madonna di Campiglio

My Favourite Walks in Madonna di Campiglio

I have been walking in the Italian resort, Madonna di Campiglio for more than twenty summers. For me, walking is the best way to enjoy the spectacular Brenta Dolomites that encircle this little resort in the Trentino region. I also enjoy skiing there and my walks are often a combination of a marked path and part of a piste. They all feature coffee and lunch stops.

Travel Guide: Wonderful summer walks in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

The peaks, valleys, lakes and rivers in madonna di campiglio provide endless walking opportunities for everyone..

A Marmot on Spinale in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Madonna di Campiglio is a small mountain resort that nestles below the Brenta Dolomite Mountains in the Trentino region of Northern Italy. The peaks and valleys, lakes and rivers provide endless opportunities for walkers of all standards to enjoy a stunning natural landscape.

This landscape divides naturally into five different areas, all cleverly interlinked by cabin lifts, roads and paths. Walkers can pass easily between these areas by purchasing the Dolomeet Guest Card and requesting the Trentino Guest Card from your hotel.

Mountain Stream on Pradalago in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Mountain Stream on Pradalago in Madonna di Campiglio

Pradalago, Cinque Laghi, Spinale and Grosté are the four peaks arising above Madonna di Campiglio. The top of each peak is accessible via a cabin lift (unlimited use with the Trentino Guest Card). Vallesinella is a wooded valley through which a tributary of the River Sarca crashes over some spectacular waterfalls along it way. This valley is within walking distance of the town but is serviced by a regular bus (free with the Trentino Guest Card) that ferries walkers to the most interesting places.

The Giro di Campiglio

Let’s start from the Giro di Campiglio. This circular path winds its way through the tree-clothed slopes above Madonna di Campiglio and has several access points from the town.

It is a walk in itself, affording glorious views of the town below and the mountains above. Links to walks branching off from this path are well-signposted and clearly marked on the walking map available from the tourist information office in the centre of town.

Walking on Pradalago in Madonna di Campiglio

There are two ways to reach the peak of Pradalago, cabin lift and on foot. The cabin lift rises from the far end of the town and the main footpath starts from the Giro di Campiglio. It is an easy, open path with some steepish sections.

Pradalago in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Pradalago in Madonna di Campiglio

On arrival at the peak, walkers have several options – head for Lago Nambino (a steep rise followed by a steep descent) or the easier path to Lago Malghette. After lunch by this lake, the only way back is on foot, but it is downhill most of the way back into the town.

Or, take a break at the Ristorante Viviani and enjoy the views from their large terrace while deciding where to go next. Should that be enough walking for one day, take the cabin lift back down to the town.

Walking on Cinque Laghi (Five Lakes) in Madonna di Campiglio

Whereas there is a path from the town to the peak of Cinque Laghi, I would only recommend this for the hardiest of walkers as it is long, steep and uphill all the way. Take the cabin lift and then follow the path at the back of Ristorante Cinque Laghi to Lago Ritorto. This narrow path edges a steep slope with fabulous views of the valley below.

Lago Ritorto in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Lago Ritorto in Madonna di Campiglio

Lago Ritorto is the first lake on the Five Lakes Walk that begins with a tough ascent up to a ridge way above the lake. The walk goes by four other lakes before descending to the final lake, Lago Nambino.

It takes at least six hours and the only places for refreshment are at the beginning and the end of the walk so it is recommended for good walkers only carrying plenty of water and snacks. I did feel a great sense of achievement on completing this walk – it is difficult but possible for reasonably experienced walkers.

The other alternatives from Lago Ritorto include taking the path down into the valley to Malga Ritorto (farm and restaurant), the farm that is visible from the lake.

From the malga (farm) there is a path or tourist train to Patascoss (self-service café) and from there, various paths down to the town – either straight down or an easier path back to town via Lago Nambino.

Of course, there is always the option to retrace your steps back to the cabin lift, descend into the town, and enjoy a coffee outside a café in the main square.

Walking on Spinale in Madonna di Campiglio

Spinale also features a path to its peak. Go ahead if you are looking for a challenge but the easy way up is via the cabin lift. Paths from the top take walkers in all directions including the top of the Grosté peak, half-way up this peak, back down to Madonna di Campiglio or into the valley of Vallesinella.

Walking from Spinale to Boch in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Walking from Spinale to Boch in Madonna di Campiglio

My personal favourite is the path from Spinale to Ristorante Boch half-way up the Grosté mountain. This easy path crosses a vast Alpine meadow encircled by the Brenta Dolomites and carpeted with a myriad of wild flowers. Listen for the piercing shriek of a marmot warning his clan that humans are approaching. And the mellow clanging of cow bells from the cattle roaming these rich summer pastures. A very pleasant stroll for walkers of all standards.

Boch is conveniently placed at the mid-station of the Grosté cabin lift for those who do not want to walk back to the town. Otherwise it is an easy descent to the bottom of the Grosté cabin lift and from there take the path through Grotte for a short cut into the town (left under the cabin lift just before the lift station).

Madonna di Campiglio

Walking on Grosté in Madonna di Campiglio

Grosté is the highest peak above Madonna di Campiglio and accessed by a two-stage cabin lift – or a very long uphill walk. There are numerous options from this peak, including the path to Rifugio Tuckett, which features a small museum dedicated to the English walker Roger Tuckett an aficionado of this area.

On top of Groste

On top of Grosté

The Rifugio is, essentially, a refuge in the mountains but many have evolved into good quality restaurants. From Tuckett there are two options, the path to Casinei or the more difficult path to Rifugio Brentei.

The scree at the top of Grosté is peppered with alpine flowers – miniature versions of those that populate the alpine meadows. Wander across this scree and marvel at the delicate beauty of these tiny blooms before going down to the mid-station – either on foot or in the cabin lift.

Path to Cascata di Mezzo through Vallesinella in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Path to Cascata di Mezzo through Vallesinella in Madonna di Campiglio

Walking through Vallesinella in Madonna di Campiglio

This is one of the most popular walks in the area and best done on a week day when the locals are at work. Vallesinella features three waterfalls but most walkers concentrate on the top two as the third, Cascata di Sotto is a bit out of the way but well signposted for those who have time to make the detour. For me the most impressive of the three is the middle waterfall, Cascata di Mezzo. It is accessible from a lovely path that branches off the Giro di Campiglio and meanders through a massive deciduous wood.

There are two other alternative routes, the shuttle bus from the centre of town (free with the Trentino Guest Card but check for ‘green days’) or a long walk up the road into the valley. The shuttle stops in a large car park above the Cascata di Mezzo from which there is a path down to this waterfall. There is also a path through the woods off the road leading up there.

Cascata di Mezzo, Vallesinella, Madonna di Campiglio in Italy

Cascata di Mezzo, Vallesinella, Madonna di Campiglio

The path that climbs up beside the Cascata Mezzo emerges just below a large car park. Walk through this car park to join the path to the Cascate Alte (opposite the Rifugio Vallesinella). Sections of this lovely path run alongside the tributary of the River Sarca, which eventually flows into Lake Garda.

There are so many of these tributaries they do not have individual names. This is my favourite section – water flows silently across little plains and then crashes over small rocky precipices. It emerges below the long drop of water known as Cascate Alte.

Vallesinella in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy

Vallesinella in Madonna di Campiglio

There is a path that winds its way up beside the Cascate Alte and it is not as difficult as it looks. But the alternatives at the top (and there are many including serious walks and climbs) all involve a long walk apart from a shorter, pretty path but this has a steep stony section at the start so only advisable for walkers wearing walking boots and using walking poles.

It is not signposted but a well-trodden path to the left of the main path indicates the start of it. I would not advise walking back down the side of Cascate Alte but that is another alternative. The easiest alternative is to re-trace your steps to Rifugio Vallesinella and have a break there before making your way back to the town either on the shuttle or an easy descent down the road.
