Topeka Collegiate’s third-grade class to host tours of crafted rainforest exhibit
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka Collegiate’s third-grade class will host tours of their crafted rainforest exhibit.
According to Topeka Collegiate officials, this week, the project is a culmination of their immersive class curriculum.
Topeka Collegiate officials said students have transformed a spacious classroom into a vibrant representation of a rainforest, complete with hand-made animals, live plants, and a water feature.
Topeka Collegiate officials indicated the public is invited to embark on a captivating tour from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., running through Friday, and on Earth Night, April 25, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“In third grade, we delve deep into geography, exploring the diverse ecosystems of our planet,” said Mrs. Kido, third grade teacher. “The rainforest unit holds a special place in our curriculum, offering invaluable insights into these regions’ biodiversity and environmental significance.”
According to Topeka Collegiate officials, each student has grown a plant for the rainforest and as a Mother’s Day gift, fostering a deeper connection to nature and nurturing a sense of responsibility towards the environment. Drawing inspiration from reputable sources such as the Rainforest Alliance and an overnight visit to the Lied Jungle rainforest environment at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, students selected a rainforest animal to research and craft for the exhibit. Furthermore, they have diligently studied rainforest facts to impart during the tours.
“This unit not only aligns with but also reinforces our school’s Core Competencies,” said Dr. Lyn Rantz, Head of School. “Our students evolve into effective communicators, refining their public speaking skills while guiding visitors through the rainforest. They hone their research skills as they delve into the intricacies of different ecosystems worldwide. Together, our third-grade students work to build a rainforest that serves as a platform to share about the importance of our environment and the conservation of all rainforests.”
Topeka Collegiate officials noted this year marks the 20th anniversary of this class project, coinciding with the school’s Earth Night. Collaborating with volunteers from the Topeka Zoo and Topeka and Shawnee Co. Public Library , Mrs. Kido’s third-grade class is gearing up for an engaging and family-friendly evening celebrating the wonders of the rainforest. The event will feature interactive activity stations alongside the rainforest exhibit, promising an enriching experience for attendees of all ages.
