Self-Drive vs. Small Group Tours in Iceland

Adventures.com offers packages both for independent travelers and for those who prefer organized small - group tours. If you’re having trouble deciding which travel style to choose for your Iceland vacation , consider the following points.

Safety comes first! Weather and driving conditions are special in Iceland. They can easily surprise you if you are not used to the climate. The weather is unpredictable and can change instantly . Snow, fog, rain, strong wind , and storms can - and probably will - occur at any time. Storms can end suddenly, leaving bright sunshine in their wake. The winters are long, dark , and stormy with frequently challenging road conditions.

danger sign at jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

If you are an inexperienced driver with little confidence , avoid renting a car and self-driving through your Iceland tour. If you have never driven on snowy and icy roads, you simply s hould not risk it. Our expert driving guides are skilled and specifically trained to drive in difficult Icelandic conditions. We at Adventures.com offer great experiences in all kinds of weather. We know when the forecast is too risky to head out. You can trust our knowledge of the island.

On an organized group tour, we take care of everything. You won’t have to bother with energy-sapping navigating in unfamiliar places and circumstances. You won’t get lost. You don't risk danger if you get distracted by the beautiful landscapes or the Northern Lights, because you are not the driver. Your focus can be on the beauty all around you rather than getting around .

Travel Companions

Are you traveling by yourself and interested in meeting like-minded travelers? Then our group tours are just what you need ! People on coach tours are more interesting than you might imagine!

You’ll meet other open-minded solo travelers who appreciate the security offered by an organized tour. From retirees with decades of amazing travel experiences to young backpackers who love going on independent holidays, you’ll travel with a diverse and fascinating group of fellow tourists.

group of friends jumping in a field in iceland

You may also meet small groups of friends or couples who want to spend quality time together and are open to making new friendships. Or lively families who want to spend their time with the kids instead of driving all day long. Or maybe even parents enjoying a child -free holiday. Many of our guests have made friends for life traveling with us!

Iceland is an expensive country so the term “low-budget” has a different meaning than in South-East Asia, for instance. The most cost-effective way of traveling in Iceland is by booking everything far in advance and this is much easier to do when arranging tours.

icelandic krona money notes ISK

If you have a fixed budget , a pre-booked tour package can help you avoid the nasty surprise of unexpected costs - a possible risk of individual travel. Especially when it comes to fuel, which exceeds $2 a liter in Iceland, and can quickly add to your mounting holiday bill. Booking one of our self-drive packages comes with the advantage of organized accommodations, often with breakfast included - but you will need to factor in the cost of fuel!

Time and Planning

When it comes to time, you can save a lot if you leave the organization to someone else. Regardless of whether you choose a group tour or a self-driven tour, our Iceland experts will put together your itinerary.

We consider value and timing. We’ve honed our expertise and skills over years of practical experience and decades of local knowledge. Putting together a similar itinerary yourself can take hours of research. Finding the best car rental companies, hotels, restaurants and places to stay takes time. So, whatever you choose, if you go with Adventures.com tours, you can relax. We will take care of everything.

Flexibility

If you prefer flexibility and spontaneity, our self-driven tours are for you. With your own rental car, you have perfect freedom . You can make extra stops where you wish and s pend as much time at locations as you want. If there’s something in your itinerary you are less interested in, you can even skip it entirely. Want to hunt for the Northern Lights or take a stroll in the midnight sun? Do it! Your tour is completely your own.

We will take care of your car rental, the accommodatio n, directions, and the self-drive tour itinerary - carefully selected by our team of professional travel experts. Book and receive your detailed travel guide, based on our extensive local knowledge. It will lead you to the most beautiful places on the island, and even some lesser-known treasures.

What's included in a multi day tour?

Our multi-day travel packages generally include accommodation that we carefully hand - pick for every tour, comfortable transport, and entrances to specified attractions along the way. Breakfast will usually be included, although you may have to arrange other meals yourself. This gives you the freedom to try local delicacies and charming restaurants you might stumble across along your journey. There may also be optional attractions included that you can pay extra for. Everything is listed on the individual tour pages, so it is best to check them.

What to bring on a Multi-Day tour?

What you should bring on a tour depends on where the tour is going. It’s best to check the specific tour page for an exact list (we'll also send a full equipment list after you have booked).

warm clothing in iceland example

However, warm and waterproof clothing is always essential, as are sturdy hiking shoes and personal items. You can rent some items from us during the booking process. We also recommend that you pack as lightly as possible – if you want to bring extra items, then you can leave them at our offices in Reykjav í k for the duration of the tour.

When is the best time to go on a multi-day tour?

The best time to visit Iceland and enjoy a tour package completely depends on the experience you want to have and the attractions you’d like to visit. Would you like to step out of your comfort zone and go on adventures? Would you like to hike in the wilderness or up a glacier ? Are you interested in wildlife, seeing whales , seals, arctic foxes, and puffins ? Or are you more eager to see the Northern Lights ? Would you go on a snowmobile adventure in wintry landscapes and visit some ice caves ? Each season has its own charm, unique pros and cons, and of course, a touch of magic!

Summer (June-August) is the most popular travel season in Iceland. During this season, it is bright all day , and beautiful sunset and sunrise colors paint the skies all night long. Plenty of amazing festivals and outdoor activities await you. This is the best time for road trips, campin g, and hiking Iceland’s epic trails. Some of Iceland’s most beautiful areas are only accessible in summer. For example, the roads that lead to the Highlands open in June and are accessible only until September.

Summer is also the season of cuteness and adorable animals: baby horses, sheep , and puffins are everywhere! The chance of seeing a whale on a whale-watching tour is nearly 100 percent in summer, although it is also very high in winter at about 90 percent.

It is important to note that h otels, guided tours, accommodations , and rental cars are often fully booked in summer. The solution to that problem is to book everything far in advance! Secure your reservations right away to make sure you get to do everything your way on your Iceland vacation.

northern lights at kirkjufell mountain in snaefellsnes

If you are keen to spot the Northern Lights, the dark winter months are most likely to provide the right conditions - of course, you’ll need to have luck on your side too! Winter is also the best time of year to encounter a world of glaciers, snow-capped mountains, majestic ice caves, and frozen waterfalls.

Winter is the low season, and with less competition for cheaper rooms, you’ll have a wider selection of affordable accommodation options.

The low season lasts from early autumn to late spring (September - May). These are the cheapest months to fly, rent a car, and find accommodatio n in Iceland.

Which Multi-day tour package is right for me?

We offer a multitude of different tour packages and you need to make sure that you choose the right one if you're going to make the most out of your time visiting Iceland.

The first question that you should ask yourself is – what time of year would you like to visit? If you visit in winter, you'll encounter a world of glaciers, snow-capped mountains, and frozen waterfalls. Some of the most popular winter activities include – snowmobiling, ice climbing, ice cave tours, and glacier hiking. The winter nights are longer – meaning that you might see the Northern Lights flickering in the heavens.

Diamond Beach Iceland

Iceland’s summers are no less impressive – the mountains transform into emerald pyramids; the seas are frequented by whales and there are a host of exciting outdoor adventures just waiting to be had. Some of the most popular outdoor activities are horse riding, hiking, kayaking and whale watching. The summer days are longer, allowing us to cram even more into our summer vacation adventures.

When booking your tour you are guaranteed accommodations at a friendly country hotel and/or guesthouse. All of the hotels we work with are of the same standard and offer nice rooms with beds and linen. The standard room is a twin room but it is possible to request a double room or a triple room, with no extra charge. The rooms come with private or shared bathrooms, depending on your booking. Free Wi-Fi, towels, a hairdryer, and a kettle are accessible at all of the hotels.

If I am traveling solo, is there a single supplement?

If you want to have your own room, then a single supplement is payable in order to secure a single room. If you do not wish to book a single room then you will be roomed with another traveler of the same gender.

Are meals included on the tour?

Breakfast is included at the hotel/guesthouse restaurant during the tour. Meals and beverages are not included on your tour. However, we will make stops at restaurants and conveniences stores where you are able to purchase all necessities. The average amount spent on food each day per person is 8,000 ISK (80$). Cash is not necessary, as credit cards are accepted at all restaurants and stores. A small amount of cash won't hurt though.

What is the luggage allowance on a multi-day tour?

For multi-day tours, each participant is allowed to bring a small backpack and one piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs). If you are traveling with extra bags or heavier luggage, you will need to book suitable storage before you arrive ; this will incur a small fee. There is the option to add luggage storage in Reykjavík during the booking process of your order in the extras section.

* The combined dimensions of each bag must not exceed 158 cm (62 in).

What meal options are available to me in the tour packages?

A typical breakfast buffet is included at all the hotels/guesthouses we stay at during the tour, allowing you to fuel up for the day on various slices of bread, toppings, cereal, fruits, and yogurt. Tea and coffee are also included, alongside a variety of additional tasty options.

Your guide will also find a good place for the group to eat lunch, where you can find a wide selection of dishes on the menu, so there will be options available for everyone. The dinner is usually at the hotels/guesthouses we stay at for the night. We will make stops at restaurants and convenience stores where you will be able to purchase all necessities.

The average amount spent on food each day per person is 8,000 ISK (80$). Cash is not necessary, as credit cards are accepted at all restaurants and stores. A small amount of cash won't hurt, though.

Would a multi-day tour suit me?

We welcome all participants of all ages older than the listed minimum age for each tour. Our average group usually consists of participants between the ages of 22 to 55 years. However, we have people of all ages, ranging from 8 to 99 years, joining our multi-day tours. We get a lot of solo travelers joining us, as well as families and friends.

If you find yourself having difficulties participating in any of the activities included in the tour, for example, a glacier activity, then you are more than welcome to skip it. Iceland is surrounded by beautiful scenery so you can explore your surroundings in the meantime r wait elsewhere while others do the activity. Our guide should be able to drop you off at a nearby place where there are some services available if requested.

What is the average driving per day?

The average is around 300 km (186 miles) per day on our multi-day tours. You’ll spend approximately 4-5 hours in the car each day. Stops are of course, made at multiple locations throughout the tour for sightseeing, activities, bathroom breaks, lunch stops , etc.

Do you offer gear rental for multi-day tours?

We do offer some necessary items for rent. For most of our multi-day tours, we rent out waterproof jackets and pants as well as hiking shoes. These items are available to book under the selection “Extras’’ in the booking widget when booking your tour on our website. If you have already booked the tour and wish to add some rental gear to your booking, you can do that at least 24 hours before your tour starts, via our Customer Portal .

Are Northern Lights guaranteed to be seen on multi-day tours?

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and therefore we can unfortunately never promise that they will be seen on your tour. Their appearance depends upon atmospheric and weather conditions. The best time to see the lights is between September - March when it’s a dark and clear sky. The sky needs to be as dark as possible, so the best places to see them are well away from the city lights.

Most of the hotels on our tours are remotely located and, therefore, ideal for spotting the northern lights. If the forecast is in our favor, then it is very likely that you will be able to see the northern lights. Most of the hotels offer a Northern Lights wake-up call upon request if lights are spotted, so it is more likely that you will see the lights on a multi-day tour!

What does luciana love most about iceland.

Hear our Tour Manager Luciana talk about the beauty of her favorite place in Iceland – Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon. This lagoon is a place of unearthly beauty, were the bright blues, stark whites, and volcanic blacks of the floating glaciers show you a natural beauty found nowhere else on earth.

Destination Must-See's

Iceland ms1

Golden Circle:

This driving route encompasses many of Iceland's most renowned natural wonders, including Thingvellir National Park, the nation’s most historic area. Icelanders gathered here in A.D. 930 and established one of the world’s first parliaments. Also this is one of the globe’s most geologically significant landscapes. It marks the point where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

Iceland ms2

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall:

This beautiful cascade is one of Iceland’s most famous and picturesque waterfalls. It is an impressive sight where water falls from a sheer cliff plunging 210 feet below. What makes it even more unique is that you can see it from all sides. That’s right - have your raincoat ready as you venture behind the falls and travel along a picture- perfect walkway. You’ll not only see but also feel the power of this natural treasure.

Iceland ms3

Vatnajökull National Park:

This is home to the magnificent Vatnajokull Glacier, the largest in Iceland and in fact, the largest glacier mass in all of Europe. Underneath this huge ice cap that covers 8% of the island lies several active volcanoes. It is a fascinating place where the powerful interchange of volcanoes and glaciers or fire and ice are continually at odds.

Iceland ms4

Aurora Borealis:

Each year, during the winter months, the magical but elusive northern lights (aurora borealis) appear. This natural phenomenon is the product of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere; the results are spectacular! Streaks of colorful light appear across the sky. This light show is truly dazzling and worth the pursuit.

Destination Must-Do's

Iceland md1

Blue Lagoon:

On the Reykjanes Peninsula, known for its rugged landscape, lava fields, and hot springs, sits the famous Blue Lagoon. Formed during the operation of a nearby geothermal power plant, it is a place where science harmonizes with nature. The waters are renowned for their healing properties. Visitors dip in the pleasantly warm, mineral-rich waters located in the middle of a dramatic lava field in the hopes of leaving with a youthful glow.

Iceland md2

Skogar Folk Museum:

The museum’s founder Thordur Tomasson started this museum with his personal collection of artifacts back in 1949. It has grown tremendously under his direction. Today you will find an extensive collection of tools, handicrafts, books, manuscripts, and documents. And on the grounds there is a substantial open-air museum with many traditional Icelandic buildings including a chapel and schoolhouse.

Iceland md3

Cruise Jökulsárlón Lagoon:

This glacial lagoon is famous for its countless icebergs. The lagoon is fed from the melting waters of the massive Vatnajökull glacier. It is an incredible experience to board a small boat and venture out in the tranquil waters to get up close to these mighty chunks of ice while surrounded by immense beauty. On your adventure, you may even get the opportunity to taste the 1,000 year old glacial ice.

Iceland md4

This Icelandic delicacy made from shark meat offers a unique window into Icelandic culture. For over 400 years, the people of Iceland have hunted the Greenland shark. The locals cure and hang the meat to dry for 4 to 5 months producing this delicacy known as “hakare.” Take the opportunity to learn the process and give it a try! It is sure to be like nothing you have ever tried before. Eating it is considered a sign of hardiness among the locals.

Expert Advice

diana

No fancy clothes required. Dress casual, comfortable and most importantly, in layers. The weather can change at any moment. Wind and rain are common, so I suggest packing waterproof clothes and shoes, and bringing a hooded windbreaker and an umbrella.

Iceland e2

You may find yourself wondering, is that an abandoned baby carriage, with a baby inside!? Relax, no worries, the parents are just inside dining. Yes that is right, it is Icelandic culture to leave the baby outside a café or restaurant. No need to alert the authorities, the baby is safe, and it is a common practice.

"Iceland is like nowhere else on the planet - the waterfalls, views and landscapes are absolutely stunning - and that's without even mentioning the Northern Lights"

John, Travel Director

Explore the quirky capital of Reykjavik

No guided tour of Iceland is complete without a visit to the most northern capital of the world, Reykjavik; a city small in size, but gregarious in style. Take in the creative intensity of the city’s people, which has flourished into a unique art and culinary scene that embraces Nordic culture and the avant-garde. All set amidst storybook gabled houses, jagged basalt rock and the sea.

Journey through Iceland's volcanic landscapes

For a land named after ice, it can be bewildering to find this country is also one of fire. Connect with this geothermal mecca of over 130 volcanic mountains by traversing raw moonscape lava fields, exposed black sand beaches and the fringes of volcanoes.

Admire the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss

Of the 10,000 plus waterfalls that can fill Iceland trips, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are two of the standouts. At Seljalandsfoss, water cascades off a cliff that was once part of Iceland’s coastline, flowing into pools surrounding lush green fields. At Skógafoss you will find an old-world majesty, with mythology speaking of trolls, elves and hidden pots of gold.

Swim in turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon

The country’s iconic Blue Lagoon is a hot spring of milky blue waters, flooded with minerals from underground rock. Immerse yourself in its waters for a soul-stirring and relaxing experience complete with healing properties of the water. Don't forget to cover yourself in silica rich mud.

See the Northern Lights

Watching spirals and wafts of blue green lights dance over Iceland’s stars is a natural phenomenon that will stir you to the very core. Caused by solar wind disturbances in the magnetosphere, the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are most likely encountered in the months of late August through to April.

Our top 5 things to do in Iceland

Known for its natural phenomena, from geothermal activity and hot springs to light sky displays, Trafalgar will surprise you with another side of Iceland. Step into the country's Viking past, music traditions and cultural quirks.

National Museum of Iceland

In the centre of Reykjavik sits Iceland’s National museum – a brutalist building with an igloo shaped dome. Explore Viking weaponry, Norse mythology and Lion-Knight legends, then wander upstairs to gain an understanding of the fight for independence from Danish rule. This museum shares the unbelievable chronology of the island’s history.

Icelandic Phallological Museum

Located in Reyjavik, the Icelandic Phallological Museum contains the world's largest display of penises. The extensive collection includes 280 specimens from 93 animal species including whales and seals, and land animals ranging from bulls to hamsters.

Reykjavík Maritime Museum

An island nation wedged between the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, fishing has always been a vital part of Iceland’s livelihood. Learn of a modern emergence through fishing and uncover artefacts of violent cod fish wars at the Reykjavik Maritime Museum - a chronicle of the Icelandic people’s seafaring ways.

Best museums in Iceland

Iceland’s extremist landscape ranges from volcanic fields of dried magma to jutting glaciers that spike like crystals. But the contours of its people are just as intriguing to explore. Nowhere do their stories unfold better than the varied museums we take you to in the capital of Reykjavik.

Smoked Puffin

Despite their fishing heritage, Icelanders take much of their cuisine from the land. The national bird of Iceland, the puffin, is one that historically saved its residents from starvation. Today, it is considered a local delicacy. Sample it for yourself accompanied by lashings of delicious blueberry sauce.

Icelandic hot dog

Hotdogs are abundant in Iceland, found at petrol stations, roadside stands, malls and ferry terminals. They are most often made of local, organic, grass-fed lamb as a result of meat import restrictions and a population of sheep that doubles that of humans. Eat yours topped with sweet brown mustard, remoulade, capers, herbs and raw onions.

For centuries, Hardfiskur has been a staple of Icelandic cuisine. This protein-rich snack is made by curing the bacteria of oily fish in the icy Atlantic air before pounding it soft with a mallet. See the fish hanging up to dry all over the island; an insight into traditional Nordic cooking processes.

Best food in Iceland

Much of Iceland’s fascinating food is steeped in the history of Viking times and woven with greater Nordic culture. Trafalgar will indulge you in many obscure delicacies from this self-sufficient country and our tours of Iceland start and end with a surprising local dish.

What to pack for Iceland

People packing for a tour

With rain falling an average of 213 days a year in Iceland, a raincoat is definetely an item you won't want to forget. A much needed extra layer for the subarctic climate, it will also provide protection from overzealous waterfalls.

Having a dry layer of warmth close to your skin is something to have handy for Iceland whether summer or winter. It’s especially helpful to have close for those for those who love to spend time outdoors exploring the country’s extreme landscapes.

Exposing your ears to the elements can send chills through your body - easily preventable with a warm pair of ear-muffs.

Icelanders take bathing very seriously. With more pools per capita than any country in the world, you may wish to take a few pairs of swimming costumes to ensure you always have one dry.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

Iceland Tours, Vacations and Travel Packages

travel packages to iceland from canada

Iceland is a mountainous island nation located in the North Atlantic Ocean located between Europe and North America. Though not part of mainland Europe, the country when on an Iceland vacation is considered Nordic European and is also the gateway and stopping point on many Arctic cruises .

Why Consider an Iceland Vacation?

The name of the country, Iceland, may not be that appropriate. Although 10% of Iceland is covered by glaciers, it has a surprisingly mild climate and countless geothermal hot spots. It is a stunningly beautiful place if you enjoy unusual and desolate landscapes. The country itself is a land of extreme contrasts. Vast, unspoilt nature lies at the doorsteps of a highly modern urban community. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior consists mainly of a plateau of sand and lava fields, mountains and glaciers all available to enjoy on an Iceland vacation. Many fjords dot Iceland's 4970-kilometre/3090-mile long coastline which is also where most settlements are situated.

Best time to visit Iceland

Because it is so close to the Arctic Circle, the amount of daylight varies dramatically by season. The sun sets briefly each night in June but it doesn't get fully dark before it comes back up again. In March and September, days and nights are of about equal length as elsewhere in the world. If you go in December, you will experience almost 20 hours of darkness. Summer is definitely the best time to go on Iceland trips. The midnight sun is a beautiful sight and one definitely not to be missed. It is easy to lose track of time when the sun is still up at 11 pm.

What are the Best Things to See on Iceland Tours?

Fairytale reykjavik.

When taking an Iceland vacation, the first place usually visited is the capital and largest city, Reykjavik. Possibly, the first thing that strikes the visitor is the differently-styled, colourful houses with their red, white, blue and green rooftops. Reykjavik is a sophisticated city and has an excellent selection of restaurants, bars and shops. It is also a compact city and very easy to walk around which is highly recommended as many attractions are within walking distance from the centre. The Old Harbour is where you can watch fishing boats bobbing in the water and take in the snow-capped mountains in the background. From here, you can take whale-watching and puffin-viewing trips. One landmark that can’t be missed in Reykjavik is the Hallgrimskirkja, an extraordinarily designed church which dominates the skyline. There are great views of the surrounding area from the rooftop viewing platform. Reykjavik boasts many museums and art galleries. The most important include the excellent National Museum of Iceland, the National Gallery of Iceland and the very unusual Icelandic Phallological Museum.

The Therapeutic Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is located a few minutes from Keflavik International Airport and 40 minutes by road from Reykjavik. It is Iceland’s most popular attraction on trips to Iceland. Mineral-rich hot water under the earth has formed a spectacular lagoon which has been developed into a luxurious health spa whose geothermal seawater is known for its positive effects on the skin. You can bathe in warm waters regardless of the outside temperature. You can also luxuriate in spa treatments and massage therapy.

Take the Golden Circle Tour

After Reykjavik, the most popular activity on an Iceland vacation is usually the Golden Circle tour easily done in half a day from Reykjavik but perhaps more interesting if taking a full-day tour or on a self-drive vacation. Thingvellir National Park is 40 kilometres/25 miles from Reykjavik and is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its historical, cultural and geological significance. It is also the site of Iceland’s first parliament established in 930 AD. The parliament met here until 1798. Gullfoss Waterfall is exceptionally beautiful. On looking at the waterfall from the viewing platform, one gets a bird’s eye view of the tumbling and rushing waters and a feel for the force and power of nature. The water falls down 32 metres/104 feet in two stages into a rugged canyon where the walls are as high as 70 metres/230 feet in height. Possibly the highlight of the Golden Circle on an Iceland tour is the opportunity to see geysers/hot springs in action. The highly active Geysir Hot Spring area has boiling mud pits and exploding geysers. The most active is Strokkur which spouts water 30 metres/100 feet into the air every few minutes. One can get fairly close to it. The Visitor Centre is close to the geysers and offers an interactive multimedia exhibition about the complete Golden Circle area including the history and the nature of Thingvellir.

The Mighty Skogafoss Waterfall

Skogafoss is one of the biggest and most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland located in South Iceland. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall often produces, you may well see a single or double rainbow on sunny days. There are steps leading up to an observation platform above Skogafoss but it is well worth climbing up to see the waterfall from above and the beautiful view from there.

Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland’s Number One Volcano

Eyjafjallajokull is located on the south coast of the country and is Iceland’s most notorious volcano. The eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, in 2010 after being dormant for more than 180 years, resulted in the grounding of thousands of flights all over Europe. It has a crater of up to 4 kilometres/2.4 miles in diameter. Eyjafjallajokull is a conical strata volcano built of many layers of hardened lava and volcanic ash. Strata volcanoes are among the most common volcanoes. Due to the glacier on top of Eyjafjallajokull, eruptions are explosive and contain much ash.

The Marvellous Myrdalsjokull Glacier

The Myrdalsjokull Glacier is the fourth largest glacier in Iceland and covers a vast area of more than 700 square kilometres/270 square miles and is as thick as750 metres/2460 feet in places. When the sky is clear, the glacier ranks among the most visually stunning in the world. Unlike other glaciers that you can only admire from a distance, here you can get up close and even step onto the ice. Because of crevasses and quickly changing and extreme weather conditions, touring the glacier with an experienced guide is recommended. The entire ice cap sits atop Katla Volcano, one of the largest active volcanoes in the Northern Hemisphere. The volcano erupts every 40 to 60 years with the last eruption being in 1918.

Dynamic Vatnajokull National Park

Vatnajokull National Park covers 13% of Iceland and is one of the largest national parks in Europe. This is where the battle between ice and fire still rages, created by the forces of rivers, glaciers and volcanic and geothermal activity. The park contains the largest glacier in the world outside the Arctic. Vatnajokull National Park offers the opportunity to experience and learn about the forceful interplay between volcanoes and glaciers.

Experience the Amazing and Elusive Northern Lights

One activity that must be mentioned is tracking down the sometimes elusive Northern Lights. This very special phenomenon is really only seen outside of an urban area. Iceland offers tours to view this remarkable happening including from Reykjavik each evening. An alternative is to visit the Aurora Reykjavik Museum for explanations and visual aids. The best time to view the Northern Lights? The Northern Lights season is from late August to mid-April. However, from late September to late March, it is dark after 6 pm and that is when you have the best opportunity to see them. There is no darkness from mid-April until mid-August. In this period of time, no Northern Lights can be observed.

What Activities are Popular in Iceland?

Cruising around iceland.

Sailing from Reykjavik around Iceland will provide you with amazing sites, spectacular scenery and excellent insight into this magical land. You will see majestic fjords, cascading waterfalls, mighty glaciers, remote fishing villages, abundant wildlife and active volcanoes.

Iceland Self-Drive Tours

What better way to explore Iceland’s rich natural treasures including national parks, beautiful waterfalls, striking glaciers, magnificent volcanoes and hot springs? And you travel at your own speed, stop when you want to and arrive at your next destination with prearranged accommodation awaiting you.

What Types of Tours are Available in Iceland?

You can enjoy an Iceland vacation either independently with a self-drive prearranged itinerary or you can join one of the several small group tours of Iceland. Specialized tour arrangements can include jeep tours which take you over terrain not usually accessible by other means of transport while seeing amazing sights. Or for something totally different, how about an Ice Cave experience? Hike behind waterfalls, stroll alongside icebergs and delve into glacial caves along Iceland’s south coast. Perhaps you might want to experience Iceland on an Iceland luxury tour which would include a private car and driver, a helicopter ride a glacier walk and a private jeep ride.

This is a very special, luxury private tour offering the very best of Iceland with two seasons from which to choose. Summer offers whale watching, a scenic helicopter ride, and exploration of geothermal wonders including amazing glaciers, breathtaking fjords and active volcanoes. Winter includes the helicopter ride, a not-to-be-forgotten glacier walk, a private jeep ride, a snowmobile excursion and a gourmet lobster feast. The choice is yours.

How Long Should I stay in Iceland?

There are two ways of approaching an Iceland vacation. Consider a stopover for a few days if you are on your way to Europe. Airline routes allow you to break your journey here. Use Reykjavik as your base and make sure to include the Golden Circle Tour. However, a week is recommended to really enjoy all the natural wonders of the country on trips to Iceland. Then you have the luxury of choosing your preferred travel arrangement be it guided tours of Iceland including airfare or small group tours of Iceland.

What are the national parks of Iceland?

There are three national parks, Vatnajokull National Park, Snaefellsjokull National Park and Thingvellir National Park. Iceland has many geysers from which the English word is derived. The famous Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes. After a phase of inactivity, another, Geysir started erupting again after a series of earthquakes in 2000. Geysir has since grown quieter and does not erupt often. Iceland has hundreds of volcanoes with approximately 30 volcanic active systems. With the widespread availability of geothermal power and the harnessing of many rivers and waterfalls for hydroelectricity, most residents have access to inexpensive hot water, heating and electricity.

So glad I booked this Self-Drive Tour with Guide to Iceland. They quickly helped me with last-minute changes prior to our trip and we didn't have any issues with our bookings during the trip, we just had to show up and enjoy ourselves. It made the whole process so much less stressful and I will definitely be booking with them in the future. Also, this tour hit a lot, if not all of the primary tourist destinations. There is a good bit of driving, but honestly, Iceland is so beautiful my husband and I didn't mind at all. Thank you, Guide To Iceland!

Where to begin! This was absolutely the best trip of my life. I’ve been planning this trip since September of 2023. Guide to Iceland had so much helpful information about the country that assisted in knowing what to expect. If I had any questions they were quick in responding. I did encounter a couple hiccups which I feel was partially out of their control, however they were quick in fixing the situation. I unfortunately didn’t get to see the Northern Lights, nor was I able to do one thing on my journey the way they planned it and it being closed on the day they planned it on the itinerary. Just gives me a reason to come back, so I made peace with it. I’d recommend this and using them to assist in making your dream a reality.

This tour with Tröll Expeditions was incredible. I was nervous at first as this was to be my first solo travel experience but the group I met up with and the incredible guide, Jóhann, made this the perfect trip! Tips would be make sure you have wind proof clothing, especially gloves, as the temperatures and precipitation is very doable without the wind cutting through you! Also, please be flexible with the itinerary and the guide. We ran into some severe weather which led to some detours and ultimately we didn't make it to all destinations on the list. With that in mind, our entire group felt the weather added to the "authenticity" of the experience and only made it more memorable! This tour was a great way to get a taste of some of the less crowded areas of the country and has me looking forward to my next trip back!

Really loved this! The cost is similar to booking hotels &tours yourself, but it's so helpful to have knowledgeable people book and organise things. I loved receiving our itineraries and any adjustments that needed to be made were relatively quick. My constructive feedback; I wish there had been some context on what to expect when actually waiting at the bus stops for tours; big groups of people and different buses showing up was pretty intimating the first couple times. This tour schedule is pretty intense, you leave Reykjavik before shops open and return after they close. If you take the Snaefellness option (which you should! It's really cool!) I recommend also taking an extra day break between it and your 2 day South coast to enjoy the city and not spend all week in a bus. Guide to Iceland was able to quickly send us a quote and book us an extra night and it was great. Would recommend and totally do it again!

Frequently Asked Questions About Iceland

For more information about visiting Iceland with Nordic Visitor, read on. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions here for your convenience. You can also find more practical advice and attraction recommendations in our Iceland Travel Guide .

It’s good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. If you want to know more about our processes and payment details, check out our booking terms and FAQs .

1. Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe place to visit. You’ll find it’s a peaceful country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. And it’s good to know that Iceland has excellent, modern healthcare services.

As you may already know, Iceland does have active volcanoes but eruptions occur once every 4 years on average. There’s also minor seismic activity on the island, but noticeable earthquakes are rare and the Icelandic Met Office keeps a good eye on these.

Your dedicated, Iceland-based travel consultant will stay on top of these matters, as well as changing weather reports, to keep you safe on your journey. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals for directions or advice either, as Icelanders are used to travellers and tend to be helpful.

For the latest visitor guidance, you can check this Iceland travel update or read our blog: Is Iceland safe to visit ?

2. What language do people speak in Iceland?

Icelandic is the official language of Iceland . It derives from a North Germanic language similar to Old Norse that has changed little since the Viking times. You’ll get by very easily with English in Iceland though, as most locals speak it. Many are multilingual in other Nordic or European languages as well.

If you want to learn some local lingo, then here are some basic words and phrases to practise:

  • Já = Yes
  • Góðan daginn / Góðan dag = Good day
  • Gott kvöld = Good evening
  • Hæ / Halló = Hi / Hello
  • Bless = Goodbye
  • Takk = Thank you

3. What is the best time of year to go to Iceland?

The best time to visit Iceland depends on the attractions, regions and activities you want to experience.

For instance, you’ll have milder temperatures and longer daylight hours in the summer compared to the winter, which means more opportunities to explore.

With better weather, you can access remote regions – like the Westfjords and central highlands – between May and September. The mountain roads here close in winter as driving conditions are too difficult.

This makes Iceland summer tours ideal if you’d like to spend lots of time outdoors, discovering the island’s many natural wonders. It’s also the best time to see wildlife, like puffins and whales, and to enjoy activities like hiking.

On the other hand, if you’re keen to chase the northern lights, you’ll have a better chance of seeing them if you visit Iceland in winter . The reason is that the nights are long between October and April, so you’ll have more hours of darkness to spot the colours of the aurora.

Time your Iceland trip for the winter months, and you’ll also get to soak up landscapes draped in frost and snow. You may wish to discover Iceland at Christmas or New Year to revel in the festive atmosphere.

For more advice on when to go, check out these guides:

  • Best time to visit Iceland
  • Iceland in summer
  • Iceland in winter

4. When and where can you see the northern lights in Iceland?

The best time to take a northern lights tour in Iceland is during the winter season, between October and April. At this time of year, you have a higher chance of spotting the aurora borealis because the nights are dark enough to see the lights shine and flicker.

For the best chance of viewing the aurora borealis, visit secluded areas away from the light pollution of towns and cities. The darker conditions will allow you to make out the colours of the northern lights more vividly.

Read these guides for more information about the aurora borealis:

  • What are the northern lights?
  • How to see the aurora borealis
  • Best times and places to see the northern lights in Iceland

5. How many days do I need to visit Iceland?

There is so much to see and do in Iceland that you should decide your trip duration according to how many days or weeks you have to spare.

For a short break in Iceland, your best bet is to explore Reykjavík and the surroundings. Within 4 days you could visit the capital’s many museums, shops, galleries and restaurants. There are thermal pools to swim in and festive markets at Christmastime.

You could also see top sights like Gullfoss waterfall, Þingvellir National Park, and the Geysir geothermal area, which includes the hot spring Strokkur. These are all part of the Golden Circle driving route in the south. You can experience the Golden Circle on a day trip from the capital, or over the course of a few days.

Or extend your itinerary and see more of South Iceland . In 7 days you’d get to visit black sand beaches, glaciers, and other breathtaking natural attractions that Iceland’s south coast is known for. Don’t miss the chance to bathe in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, an inviting geothermal pool.

Another great option is to visit West Iceland . Enjoy a northern lights adventure in the remote Westfjords, or head to the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Called “Iceland in miniature”, the Snæfellsnes peninsula is just 90 kilometres (56 miles) long and has a bit of everything. Discover volcanoes, lava fields, waterfalls, hot springs and fishing villages here.

If you have between 10 days and 2 weeks to spare, then you’ll get to see the many beautiful corners of Iceland. As well as the southern and western regions, you can explore East Iceland and visit North Iceland too by travelling the country’s Ring Road.

Venture east to admire fjords and gaze upon the mighty Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs float on the blue waters. Continue north to Akureyri and the Lake Mývatn area to marvel at the Krafla volcano, mud pools and craters. You can warm up with a dip in the Mývatn Nature Baths.

Essentially, the more days you have to spend in Iceland then the more you will get to experience. In winter you’ll also increase your chances of spotting the northern lights!

Check out our blog for inspiration on how many days to spend in Iceland .

6. What are the best things to do in Iceland?

Iceland may be small, but it packs a punch with its wild scenery, intriguing culture and mind-boggling natural wonders. Here are some of the top things to do in Iceland :

  • Marvel at waterfalls
  • Hike in national parks
  • Dip in hot springs and pools
  • Hunt for the northern lights
  • Walk along black sand beaches
  • Taste Icelandic cuisine
  • Admire glacier lagoons
  • Venture into ice caves or lava tunnels
  • Learn about Icelandic legends
  • Look for whales and puffins
  • See geothermal wonders and volcanoes
  • Go horse riding

Read more on our blog about the best Iceland tours to add to your itinerary .

7. What’s the best way to travel in Iceland?

The best way to explore Iceland depends on what you wish to do and how flexible you’d like the tours to be.

Iceland self-drive packages are ideal if you want to set the pace and travel independently. On a road trip, you can take your time discovering top sights and explore off the beaten track. You also have more flexible timings and the freedom to go further afield for excursions and restaurants.

Another excellent way to travel is with a knowledgeable guide and a small group of fellow travellers. Nordic Visitor’s escorted group tours of Iceland give you the opportunity to learn from a local. They’ll take you to each attraction and share their knowledge and favourite spots.

Nordic Visitor only organises small minibus tours with a maximum of 16 people. This ensures you have a more relaxed and personal experience compared to large coach trips. This is a popular choice for our many solo guests and for those who don’t feel comfortable driving.

If you want something exclusive and would prefer to travel alone or with friends or family members, then choose from our privately guided tours of Iceland . You’ll have a local guide all to yourselves for a more personal experience.

Or you could pick an Iceland multi-day package : a city stay with quality-tested accommodation and activities arranged each day. You’ll get to enjoy guided excursions with local experts, but then have free days to explore on your own.

If you want more information, contact our Iceland team and they will help you decide which travel style would suit you best.

8. Who are Nordic Visitor’s Iceland travel experts?

Nordic Visitor is proud to be a local tour operator in Iceland. Reykjavík – the capital city – is where we are headquartered, and it is where the company was founded in 2002. Our Iceland travel agents are based here and have extensively explored the country.

You’ll be assigned a dedicated travel consultant who will use their in-depth knowledge to arrange your Iceland tour for you. They’ll share personal recommendations and can customise your itinerary to match your particular interests.

Find out more  about Nordic Visitor and our passionate travel experts.

Yes, Nordic Visitor offers an optional cancellation insurance which protects your payment. This means that, if you need to cancel prior to your arrival, you will never lose the money you’ve paid to us. You’ll be offered a partial refund and partial travel credit depending on terms and conditions.

If you need to change your travel dates, we'll rearrange all your tour details in one place, so you have a hassle-free experience.

Read our Book with Confidence terms to find out the details and see how you can have peace of mind with risk-free, flexible booking.

If you do not have cancellation insurance with us, normal booking terms apply and we recommend you check with your private travel insurance provider.

11. Why use Nordic Visitor instead of booking everything myself?

At Nordic Visitor, we’ll save you time and effort by planning your getaway for you, based on your needs and requests.

When you arrange your trip yourself, you have to carry out all the research and book all parts of your tour separately. If you need to make changes to your itinerary, you have to do all the legwork yourself.

Nordic Visitor takes care of everything on your behalf so you can relax and look forward to your trip.

Our travel experts will design your route, planned in a way that’s both comfortable and convenient. For example, they’ll ensure you don’t cover the same stretch of road twice unnecessarily. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share all their insider tips with you.

This means you can leave all the hassle of trip-planning to the experts, who are based in Iceland. They know the country inside out, so you can rely on them to incorporate the best sights and hidden gems that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.

What’s more, you get access to our 24/7 helpline during your trip. Should you need any support, we are only a call away. And if you need to make changes to your itinerary for any reason, you can leave all of that to us as well.

12. Do I need a visa to go to Iceland?

Fortunately, if you’re arriving from Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you will not need a visa to visit Iceland. You must have a valid passport with at least 3 months left before it expires.

If you’re visiting from outside of these countries, you will need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter Iceland. This is a short-stay visa that permits you to travel to Schengen Area member countries for up to 90 days.

Read more about getting to Iceland on our travel guide.

13. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?

Having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring Iceland is really important. That’s why we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation in Iceland for you.

The hotels and guesthouses you will experience on your Iceland tour are all highly rated by visitors. Our local experts have carefully selected each accommodation partner for their exceptional standards of quality, location and character.

As our Iceland travel team is based locally, we have close connections with our suppliers and we visit them regularly. This is why we are confident that the accommodation on your trip with us will meet or even exceed your expectations.

14. Will Nordic Visitor customise my Iceland tour?

Yes, it’s easy to make customisations to your tour online. Add extra nights, upgrades and day trips to your liking as you go through the booking steps. If you’d like to personalise your itinerary further, be sure to ask your dedicated travel consultant.

They will happily tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or wildlife. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.

If you’re visiting Iceland with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Iceland , they’ll gladly add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.

Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.

15. Can I choose the arrival date?

You can choose from a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season you are interested in. All of our tours are available to purchase online, so pick the best date for you from the availability calendar.

If your travel plans have changed and you want to amend your arrival date, contact your travel consultant to rearrange your booking.

16. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights to Iceland?

Your flights to Iceland are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.

17. When should I book my flight tickets?

We recommend that you check flights for timings and dates, but do not purchase them until you’ve booked your Nordic Visitor tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Nordic Visitor packages come with daily itineraries and all of your accommodation organised for you. So once you have all of the arrangements confirmed, you can make an informed choice on your flight times. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

18. What to pack for Iceland?

Due to its northerly location, Iceland’s climate is cool. And as you’ll probably want to spend time outdoors on your trip, it’s best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Here’s our recommended packing list for Iceland :

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Warm hiking socks
  • Quick-drying travel towel

You can read more about what to wear in Iceland on our experts’ blog.
