No. 1 OU Opens WCWS Thursday

Oklahoma

WCWS BASICS

• The defending national champion and No. 1 overall seed Oklahoma (54-2) looks to defend its crown at the 2022 Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City beginning Thursday, June 2.

• Oklahoma is vying for back-to-back national titles, a fourth in the last six seasons and the program's sixth crown all-time.

• The Sooners are making their sixth consecutive and 15th appearance all-time in the Women's College World Series, including 10th trip in the last 11 years. No other program in the country has made as many trips to the WCWS as OU since the 2011 season.

• Oklahoma opens WCWS play versus Northwestern on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on ESPN with Beth Mowins, Michele Smith, Jessica Mendoza and Holly Rowe on the call.

• The games can be heard on 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on The Varsity app with OU play-by-play announcer Chris Plank and alum DJ Sanchez on the call.

• After 56 games played, the Sooners are batting .369 as a team with a nation-leading 138 home runs, 515 runs scored on 508 hits and 486 RBIs. They are outscoring opponents 515-48 with only 37 runs given up being earned. The team is slugging .731, holds a .476 on-base clip and has swiped 59 bases on 76 attempts.

• The pitching staff holds a nation-best 0.80 ERA and has 435 strikeouts, allowing opponents to bat just .139 on the year. The staff has also thrown a program-record eight no-hitters and 32 shutouts on the year.

• The Sooners have won by run-rule in a program-record 38 of their 56 games (68% of games).

BACK TO OKC

• Oklahoma is making its 15th overall appearance at the WCWS, the third-most showings all-time. The Sooners trail only UCLA (31 appearances) and Arizona (25).

• Overall, this season marks Oklahoma's 28th consecutive appearance in the NCAA postseason, including every year under head coach  Patty Gasso . Only Arizona holds a longer active streak (35 straight), while the Sooners are tied with Washington for second-longest run.

• With five national titles (2000, '13, '16, '17, '21) Oklahoma trails only UCLA (12) and Arizona (8) for most in NCAA history, and no other team has more than two.

• In 2021, OU capped a record-breaking 56-4 campaign by claiming the program's fifth national title. Super senior Giselle Juarez claimed Most Outstanding Player of the WCWS while Jocelyn Alo launched four homers throughout the tourney. OU broke records for runs scored (49) and home runs (15). Alo's four home runs tied for the most all-time at the WCWS.

Lead_Green vs UCF

SECOND HOME

• The Sooners will make the familiar trip to USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex this weekend, traveling less than 30 miles from Marita Hynes Field to the historic stadium.

• Oklahoma has already played seven games at HOF Stadium this season, going 6-1 in March at the Hall of Fame Classic and at the Big 12 Tournament in May.

• All-time, the program is 125-49 under head coach  Patty Gasso  in Oklahoma City, including regular season and postseason games.

OU VS. THE FIELD

• Northwestern : The Sooners are 20-2 all-time versus Northwestern. In 2019, the teams met in the NCAA Norman Super Regional, with the Sooners sweeping the Wildcats by scores of 3-0 and 8-0. The teams met in the abbreviated 2020 season in Norman, with OU taking two games by scores of 8-3 and 5-1.

• UCLA : The two historic programs met early this season in Irvine at the inaugural Mark Campbell Invitational with the No. 1 Sooners beating the No. 3 Bruins 4-1. The teams met in the 2021 WCWS with the Sooners besting the Bruins 10-3 to eliminate UCLA from the World Series. All-time, UCLA holds a 12-6 advantage.

• Texas : OU took the series from its Red River rival in Austin in April, winning two of three. Texas ended OU's 40-game win streak and 38-0 start to the season. OU leads the series 50-25 and the teams have met in the World Series once in 2013, a 10-2 OU run-rule win in five innings.

• Oregon State : OU leads the series over the Beavers, 16-3. The teams last met in 2019 in Norman, a 3-0 OU victory.

LAST TIME OUT

• The top-seeded Sooners breezed through the Norman Super Regional, beating UCF in two games to advance to OKC, outscoring the Knights 15-1.

• Oklahoma's offense was firing on all cylinders in game two of the Supers, blasting four home runs, highlighted by a two-homer game from shortstop Grace Lyons . Chipping in homers of their own was Jocelyn Alo and Jana Johns . In storybook fashion, Alo homered in her last official at-bat at Marita Hynes Field.

HOMER HAPPY

• In 2022, the Sooners pace the NCAA with 138 home runs and a 2.5 HR/game average.

Additionally, the staff holds a nation-best 32 shutouts on the season, good for a school record.

• OU has three pitchers in the top-five nationally in ERA: Trautwein ranks first in the country with her 0.40 while Bahl (0.95) holds fourth and May (0.99) sits at fifth.

• The staff have a combined 435 strikeouts in 323.0 innings pitched, a product of OU's 38 run-rules.

• Freshman Jordy Bahl leads the group with 199 strikeouts in 132.1 IP, while Trautwein (104.1 IP) and May (85.0 IP) have 141 and 93 K's, respectively.

Trautwein tossed her second no-no of the season vs. UCF in game one of Super Regionals.

• The eight no-hitters on the year is the most in a single season in program history, besting 2013, 2015 and 2019's mark of six.

• The NFCA Hall of Fame head coach, Gasso, wins an unprecedented 10th consecutive Big 12 Coach of the Year award and 14th overall in her 28 seasons at the helm in Norman.

• Of the 12 student-athletes that made up the All-Big 12 First Team, six of the selections are Sooners: Jocelyn Alo , Jordy Bahl , Jayda Coleman , Tiare Jennings , Grace Lyons and Hope Trautwein . OU's league-best six selections tie a program-best and outpaces the next-highest school by three.

• Alo collects her fourth career First Team honor, while Coleman, Jennings and Lyons all earn their second and Bahl and Trautwein were named First Team honorees for the first time of their Big 12 careers. Alo, Bahl, Jennings and Lyons were all unanimous choices. Bahl was also named to the All-Freshman Team.

• Sophomore Alyssa Brito brings OU's All-Big 12 Team total to seven Sooners as the outfielder was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, her first career Big 12 all-conference team accolade.

HOME RUN QUEEN

• Jocelyn Alo is the new home run queen of college softball. In front of the home crowd of friends of family in Honolulu on March 12, Alo hit career home run No. 96 to break the tie with OU alum Lauren Chamberlain to be the NCAA career home run leader.

• After an eight-game stretch that saw Alo walk a combined 16 times including three intentional walks, the Hauula, Hawaii, native left no doubt when she finally saw the pitch she wanted.

• The historic homer came in the top of the sixth inning versus Hawaii, a two-run blast to right center on a 2-1 count. Alo went 3-for-3 in the game with three RBIs.

• Alo hit the 96 mark in 224 games and 651 at-bats, she hit the record-tying No. 95 in 215 games, less games than Chamberlain (220) and anyone else in the all-time top 10. Chamberlain registered 607 at-bats in her career, hitting home run No. 95 in her last career at-bat.

• OU has been the top-ranked squad since March 2, 2021, or 65 weeks, or 456 days.

• The Sooners have held the top spot in both the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 for 28 straight polls.

• OU has been the wire-to-wire No. 1 team in 2022 and has spent a school-record 14 straight weeks at No. 1 in the 2022 season, recently breaking the tie with the 2021 team's run of 13 weeks.

• Oklahoma was chosen as the unanimous No. 1 in both the NFCA Division I Preseason Coaches Poll and USA Softball Collegiate Preseason Top 25 and has held the top spot for all 14 weeks of the 2022 season.

• Oklahoma's No. 1 spot in the NFCA preseason poll marked the third time the Sooners enter a season in the top spot (2017, '18) and just the second time OU has been the unanimous choice in the coaches poll, joining the 2017 squad.

• Additionally, it's the 11th straight year the Sooners have started in the NFCA's top 10, good for the nation's longest active streak. OU has been ranked in the top five nine of the past 10 years, the most over that stretch.

• Overall, the Sooners rank third with 22 top-10 appearances in the NFCA preseason poll, trailing only Arizona (24) and UCLA (23).

• Oklahoma, Michigan, UCLA and Washington are the only programs to be ranked in every NFCA preseason poll, which dates back to 1995. OU also extended its streak of being the only program ranked every week in the 28-year existence of the NFCA's poll (392 straight).

Biggest Moments From The 2022 Women's College World Series

College softball fans bore witness to a year unlike any other this past season.

Records previously thought to be near-untouchable were smashed, familiar stars did their things, new standouts emerged from the ranks and much more occurred all throughout the year.

Though plenty of programs were able to look back fondly on their 2022 seasons, only one program - Oklahoma - could claim itself as being at the cream of the crop.

During a monumental week at the Women's College Series in front of plenty of home fans at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, the Sooners sent their faithful home happy with a historic performance worthy of their historic 2022 season.

The challenge for OU in 2023 is to become the first team to win three consecutive national titles since the legendary UCLA teams of 1988-1990.

First, though, it's worth looking back at the WCWS that was and the key events that made it worthwhile to so many involved.

With the year coming to a close and the college softball season quickly approaching, here's a look back at some of the moments that made the 2022 Women's College World Series special.

Oklahoma Runs Through The Competition - And Record Book

It's only right that Oklahoma finished arguably the most dominant college softball season ever with one of the most dominant Women's College World Series performances ever.

The Sooners closed the curtain on their record-smashing 59-3 campaign in style, winning back-to-back titles. Oklahoma became just the third program in history (along with UCLA and Arizona) to win consecutive national championships multiple times.

Redshirt senior utility player Jocelyn Alo solidified her spot as the college game's greatest longball hitter by smacking five home runs in Oklahoma City, giving her 12 for her WCWS career and 122 with the Sooners, both national records.

Freshman dynamo Jordy Bahl ended her phenomenal first season on the mound by picking up her final win of the year in OU's most important game of the year - its title-clinching victory over rival Texas in the national championship series.

Oh, and infielder Tiare Jennings set the individual WCWS record for RBIs with 15, a massive part of the record-breaking 64 runs the Sooners scored - the most in a single WCWS and a mark OU had broken before its second win over the Longhorns.

Things got a bit hairy when rival UCLA beat the Sooners 7-3 in the semis, meaning the Bruins had coach Patty Gasso's unit on the brink of elimination. But a dominant 15-0 response from Oklahoma silenced concerns, and the Sooners ended up lifting the trophy three days later.

Jordy Bahl Returns From Injury To Shine On The Biggest Stage

It's not as if Oklahoma's rotation was shaky or in dire condition entering 2022, anyway, but the Sooners lost their ace - 2021 WCWS Most Outstanding Player Giselle Juarez - to graduation, following an incredible 53-6 record (including a 23-1 mark in 2021) during her time in Norman, leaving massive shoes to fill on the mound.

It didn't take long for OU to find Juarez's fill-in.

Bahl, a prep standout who won the Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award during her senior campaign in high school, was spectacular during her freshman college season.

She established, with authority, her place as the Sooners' ace, going 22-1 and winning the NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award.

travel softball world series 2022

Bahl threw a perfect game and contributed to two more no-hitters during the regular season, but during pregame warmups prior to a game against Oklahoma State (the Sooners' final series of the regular season) in May, the Nebraskan suffered an arm injury that sidelined her for nearly a month. She missed much of OU's postseason charge to the WCWS.

Bahl returned to the rotation in OU's WCWS-opening win against Northwestern on June 2, and she got her first start since the injury a week later in the title-clinching game against Texas, where she allowed four hits and two earned runs in four innings to give the Sooners' electric offense enough insurance to seal the deal on the program's sixth national championship.

That's not a bad way to close out your teens, as Bahl only turned 20 in July.

Texas Sets New Standard For Unseeded Teams

Texas softball showed hints of being an elite team throughout the regular season, evidenced by the facts that the Longhorns handed Oklahoma one of its few losses on the year (a 4-2 win on April 16) and that they had three All-Big 12 first-team selections in pitcher Hailey Dolcini, catcher/first baseman Mary Iakopo and infielder Janae Jefferson - the most selections of any program not named Oklahoma.

But it still was a year that included many of its ups and downs - that is, until the Longhorns hit postseason play.

Needing to go on the road to win both its regional (Seattle) and super regional (Fayetteville), Texas ended the WCWS hopes of two contenders in back-to-back rounds in Washington State and Arkansas, entering Oklahoma City as an unseeded team with plenty of hope and recent confidence backing it up.

The Longhorns immediately announced their arrival by beating title contender UCLA on the event's first day, and though a loss to Oklahoma left Texas in a win-or-go-home scenario, UT stormed back to beat Arizona in the second round, then beat Big 12 rival Oklahoma State twice in the semis to clinch a spot in the championship series, becoming the first unseeded team in WCWS ever to do so.

The Sooners, much like they did to most other opponents during their historic 2022 season, made quick work of the Longhorns in the title series, but Texas could hold its head high in pride for the heights it achieved, with pitcher Estelle Czech, first baseman Courtney Day and outfielder Bella Dayton all securing spots on the All-Tournament Team for their performances throughout their week in Oklahoma City.

Oregon State's Unlikely Journey Back To Oklahoma City

Does a program with 19 regular-season losses and a losing conference record scream "WCWS material" at first glance to you?

For Oregon State, that was exactly the position it was in as a program that struggled at times in the elite Pac-12 Conference but had its moments nonetheless, including a regular-season series win over Arizona.

The Beavers also went on a brutal 10-game losing run in conference play that stretched into May, being swept by powerhouses Washington, UCLA and rival Oregon in the process, suggesting that OSU was a good team, but perhaps a step behind the elite ones that could make serious runs to the WCWS.

But momentum is a funny thing in softball, and the Beavers found it at just the right time.

Oregon State beat both Ohio State and Tennessee twice to escape out of the Knoxville Regional, then swept Pac-12 adversary Stanford at the Cardinal's own Super Regional to get back to the WCWS for the first time since 2006 and just the second time in program history.

Underdogs all the way through, Florida and Arizona beat the Beavers on back-to-back nights to send them home, but it still was an epic run for coach Laura Berg and her team. It also marked Berg's return to the WCWS for the first time since helping take Fresno State to the national title as a player in 1998.

Arizona Coach Caitlin Lowe Gets Back To Familiar Spot

Speaking of former standout players who got back to the biggest stage in college softball as coaches, Arizona coach (and past All-American Wildcat player) Caitlin Lowe experienced that feeling during the 2022 WCWS, as well.

It established that even after a significant change in the coaching ranks of the Wildcats' program, Arizona likely wasn't moving far from the best of the best in college softball anytime soon.

Lowe, a former Olympian with Team USA, who led Arizona to back-to-back WCWS wins in 2006 and 2007, had been an assistant coach at her alma mater for eight seasons, before being hired on as head coach, following the retirement of legendary coach and eight-time WCWS winner Mike Candrea after the 2021 campaign.

After a 19-4 start, a 1-10 beginning to Pac-12 play seemed to indicate there were some bumps in the road Arizona still needed to get past, before it truly could be considered elite again.

An epic breakout campaign by sophomore utility player Allie Skaggs (.367 average, 24 home runs, 58 RBIs) contributed heavily to the Wildcats' second-half charge, winning both the Columbia Regional and Starkville Super Regional, to make it back to the WCWS for the 25th time - and, of particular importance, the first time with Lowe at the helm.

Arizona went 1-2 in Oklahoma City, beating Pac-12 foe Oregon State and losing to a pair of Big 12 opponents in Oklahoma State and Texas, but it was a major year of growth for the Wildcats program, giving Lowe a sturdy foundation to build on for years to come - just like her hall-of-fame predecessor.

What is the best 14U softball team?

There is no definitive answer to the question of who has the best 14U softball team. However, there are a few factors to consider when trying to answer this question.

One factor to consider is the level of competition that the team faces. Teams that compete in more competitive leagues and tournaments are likely to be better than teams that compete in less competitive leagues and tournaments.

Another factor to consider is the talent of the players on the team. The best 14U softball teams are typically composed of players who are very talented and have a lot of experience playing together.

Finally, the coaching and training that the team receives is also important. The best 14U softball teams typically have coaches who are experienced and know how to help their players improve.

Who is the best 10U softball team?

There are a lot of great softball teams at the 10U level, but there is one team that stands out above the rest. That team is the _______ _____ _____ _____.

The Class C softball season typically runs from late May to early July. Class C softball tournaments are typically played in late July and early August. The Class C softball World Series is typically played in early August.

What should I look for in a travel Softball team?

There are a few things you should look for when joining a travel softball team.

The first thing to consider is the team’s experience and level. Make sure the team is at a level that is appropriate for your skill set. Joining a team that is too advanced or too beginners can be frustrating and can lead to a lot of lost playing time.

The team’s location is also something to consider. If you don’t live close by, you’ll need to factor in travel time and expenses when considering joining a team.

The team’s coaches and parents are also important to consider. Make sure the coaches are experienced and that the parents are supportive and positive. You’ll be spending a lot of time with these people, so it’s important that you get along with them.

The team’s philosophy is also something to consider. Some teams emphasize winning over development, while others focus on player growth. Make sure the team’s philosophy aligns with your own values.

Finally, make sure the team has a good team chemistry. This is one of the most important things to look for when joining a team. If the team doesn’t have good chemistry, it can be a frustrating and unhappy experience.

What is the best softball team in USA?

There is no definitive answer to the question of who is the best softball team in the United States. However, there are a few teams that stand out as some of the strongest contenders.

One of the top softball teams in the country is the University of Washington Huskies. The Huskies have a long history of success in the sport, and they continue to rank among the top teams in the nation.

Another top contender is the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners are a powerhouse team that has consistently made it to the playoffs and has even won a few national championships.

The Florida Gators are also a top-ranked softball team. The Gators have a long history of dominance in the sport, and they continue to be a force to be reckoned with.

These are just a few of the top softball teams in the United States. There are many other teams that could also be considered contenders for the title of best softball team in the country.

Adams Deals Again, Offense Comes Alive as Alabama Baseball Claims Series Over Ole Miss

The Alabama baseball team has its first road series win of conference play.

  • Author: Will Miller

The No. 23 Alabama baseball team needed a win on Saturday afternoon to clinch its first road series win of the SEC slate. Thanks to another veteran performance by southpaw pitcher Zane Adams and a 10-run day from the bats, the Crimson Tide (28-16, 9-12 SEC) won the rubber match against Ole Miss at Swayze Field 10-3.

Ole Miss trotted out right-hander Mason Nichols for the third start of his career, and he had a solid day with four innings of one-run ball before being removed from the contest after a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth. The Rebels (23-20, 7-14 SEC) won Friday night's game 9-8, and head coach Mike Bianco opted to use seven pitchers throughout the course of the series finale, a decision which did not pay the dividends he was hoping for. All told, the series could have been worse for Ole Miss, which offered hardly any life in a 12-0 loss against the Crimson Tide on Thursday.

"That was just a gutty team effort, to be honest with you," Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn said. "The story of this whole thing, man, is Zane Adams... At one point, retires 17 in a row. It's hard to imagine that kid's a freshman. His poise, his ability to not make the situation bigger than it is, and just go execute pitches, was impressive. That allowed that offense to settle in and get going."

Adams, who memorably spun an eight-inning shutout performance against Arkansas on April 14, dealt once again Saturday and remained in the game at the start of the eighth inning in Oxford. His afternoon finally came to a close following a two-run home run by Rebels leadoff man Jackson Ross, which turned an 8- score in favor of Alabama to 8-3. The freshman's final line was seven innings and three runs on six hits, a quality start.

The Rebels got on the board first in the second inning when catcher Eli Berch singled to bring home center fielder Ethan Groff. Until the eighth inning, that was the only run the home team pushed across with Adams on the bump. Third baseman Gage Miller then sent a rocket out to left field in the top of the third for his 18th home run of the season, tying the game. There would be no more runs for either side until a disastrous top of the sixth inning for Ole Miss.

Wes Mendes, who took the hill in relief of Nichols, got the first out of the frame on a flyout by Miller. He hit the next batter, left fielder Ian Petrutz, and then shortstop Justin Lebron hit a two-run home run to break the 1-1 tie. The blast was his 11th of the spring. He was anything but an easy out for the Rebels all weekend long. Things cascaded from there, as a double by Will Hodo on a ball the outfield lost in the sun turned into a run, and then the batter who sent Hodo home, Kade Snell, eventually scored on a wild pitch.

"That kind of jumpstarted everyone else," Vaughn said of Lebron's home run. He had previously noticed his team's at-bats in the early innings were uncharacteristic. "Just didn't have much going for us," he said.

After entering the sixth inning tied 1-1, Ole Miss' lineup grabbed the bats for the bottom half down by four runs. Adams sat them down in order. Catcher Mac Guscette sent a home run to left field, his fourth in the past two weekends, to lead off the seventh inning. Mendes was out of the game by that point. The Crimson Tide added the seventh and eighth runs of its tally when Guscette and second baseman Bryce Eblin each hit their way aboard and later scored in the eighth.

Closer Alton Davis II entered the contest in relief of Adams. Ole Miss did not get a run off of him. The continued pitching changes on the Rebels' side offered no answer. Ryne Rodriguez was sent in to pitch during the top of the ninth, and gave up an RBI single to former Rebel TJ McCants. McCants now has a 10-game hitting streak. Rodriguez was subsequently lifted for Connor Spencer, the seventh pitcher of the game, who gave up the final Alabama run on a Guscette single that scored McCants.

The Mississippi gauntlet is still only halfway over for the Crimson Tide. Next weekend, Alabama will travel to Starkville to take on Mississippi State. There is no midweek between Saturday's outing and that three-game set. The last time the Crimson Tide played at Dudy Noble Field was in the 2022 season. It very well could have swept the then-reigning College World Series champions, but had to settle for a series-salvaging win in the Sunday game.

Lakers defeat Nuggets to avoid elimination: ‘We’ve given ourselves another life’

LeBron James , in the Lakers ’ white uniform, stood at the scorer’s table, filled his hands with chalk and tossed it into the evening air — the same as always.

Yet Saturday, even if it was like the previous 11 meetings with the Denver Nuggets , was always going to be different.

Before Saturday, a loss didn’t mean the Lakers might make a coaching change.

Before Saturday, a loss didn’t mean the Lakers were going to have to reimagine their roster.

Before Saturday, a loss didn’t mean James might’ve thrown that chalk into the air for the last time as a Laker.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham stands on the sideline and points toward the court during a playoff game against the Nuggets

Plaschke: Darvin Ham is on the hot seat as the Lakers are on the brink of elimination

The Lakers may struggle to contend for a title if they keep making quick coaching changes, but that might not be enough to save Darvin Ham’s job.

April 26, 2024

The stakes were so high — but the feeling was so familiar.

With 12 minutes left — two hours or so since James threw the powder into the air — the Lakers were at that point again.

Stand or fall. Resist or crumble. Lead or lose.

Back to Denver or off to Cancún.

For the first time in this Western Conference playoff series — really for the first time since the end of the 2022 season — the Lakers didn’t fall apart against the Nuggets’ second-half force. They didn’t panic as Denver pushed and as the Lakers’ shots rimmed in and out.

James drove through the Denver defense to hit the big buckets in the fourth quarter, D’Angelo Russell bounced back from a nightmare Game 3, Austin Reaves was aggressive and Anthony Davis dominated as the Lakers won 119-108 in Game 4 at Crypto.com Arena to extend their series with the Nuggets at least through Monday.

Lakers forward Anthony Davis tries to steal the ball from Nuggets center Nikola Jokic during Game 4.

“Beautiful day to be alive in order to stay alive,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “That was the message yesterday and the message today. Just win one game.”

The win ended a stretch of 11 straight losses to the Nuggets.

“We get another opportunity to go play one more game. And if we win, we’ll come back and play another and keep moving from there,” Reaves said. “I obviously wish we won 4-0. The odds aren’t stacked in our favor. But anytime we can keep ourselves floating above water, we have an opportunity to do something special. And we’re ready for the challenge.”

James scored 30 points, Russell and Reaves had 21 each and Davis scored 25 with 23 rebounds.

Nikola Jokic led Denver with 33 to go with 14 assists and 14 rebounds.

Russell, for the second time this series, bounced back from a bad game with a strong one — finishing with a team-best plus-15 rating.

“I mean, this isn’t a place that you can come out and try to dominate the game when you got LeBron and AD right next to you. So, for me to come out [in] Game 3 and not score and then come out and be ultra aggressive and do all that extra stuff, that’s not really me,” Russell said. “I know that’s what people were expecting me to do, so it may be easy for me to prepare my mind for that approach and let the game come to me and be aggressive and it was as simple as that. We looked up, everybody was aggressive, everybody was pitching in.”

travel softball world series 2022

The Lakers, as they have all series, outplayed the Nuggets early, outscoring them by five to extend their point differential to 27 points in first quarters.

That lead grew to double figures in the second quarter, the fourth time that has happened this series despite the Nuggets’ spotless record.

It grew to 15 early in the third quarter, as Denver took a timeout to try to gather itself. And while Jokic sank consecutive threes, the Lakers, for the first time this series, punched back.

The Nuggets’ late-game shot making, which has broken the Lakers’ backs for the last 15 months, surprisingly dried up.

And the Lakers’ attention to detail was at a series high, led by James, who was extra demonstrative. He screamed at the Lakers’ assistant coaches for not calling a timeout to trigger a fourth-quarter review. And after the Lakers got beat on a backdoor cut by Aaron Gordon, he yelled at Reaves.

travel softball world series 2022

The intensity, which has dipped throughout the series, never faded, the Nuggets never leading.

“The only opportunity for us is just to play the next game. And we’ve given ourselves another life. We’ve given ourselves another lifeline and it’s a one-game series for us,” James said. “…Monday’s game is the most important game of the season for us and we understand that and we know that, so it’s that stage where you lose, you’re done. You win and you keep going. So, it’s not much to talk about.”

Not yet, at least. The big decisions, the big moments move forward to a Game 5 when they start over again.

“It sucks to get swept. Nobody wants that feeling, especially going into the summer. You gotta live with that feeling for the rest of the summer. So we didn’t really talk about it, not just me and Bron, but the entire team. We know what’s at stake,” Davis said. “Like I said, nobody wants that feeling in their mouth for the rest of the summer. So the way we play tonight is the way we gotta play for the rest of the series: a sense of desperation and coming out with a sense of urgency.”
