I like to carry (2) 25′ hoses and only connect the second one if I need the extra length. Handling and ultimately draining a 50′ hose for storage is much more difficult.

I purchased a camco heated potable water hose and used it last winter. The hose appears to be high quality, and my water never froze. But there is more and that caused me to be extremely disappointed in the hose. We have a lot of temps below freezing where I am located. My trailer is stationary during the winter and I am full time in it. After the water was not used for a while such as overnight the water had a bad taste and also a smell until you ran out the water that was in the length of hose. I had read in the instructions that you should run the water for a while before using it. I thought that a strange statement and also very vague. I contacted Camco customer service regarding the smell and taste issue. I was advised that I needed to run the water until the smell and taste dissipated. The water in the hose, after not being used for several hour, would be very hot which I am guessing contributes to the smell and taste. In my situation that was very bad. I have a 75′ 3/4″ hose that goes into a septic system. I keep the grey dump valve closed due to freezing issues until the tank is full. Then I can dump it but also then use compressed air to blow out the drain hose so it is always ready for the next use. I didnt want to fill the grey tank any more than absolutely required. As a work around I would run the water until the smell and taste dissipated,into a bucket that I would dump outside. Not fun. This year I made my own heated water line using PEX piping and heat tape. Its works great an no issue with smell or taste.

It has a spring on each end to protect it from kinking at the connections (which are top-quality connectors) and eventually leaking, so you don’t have to buy the spring-end hose connections separately. Very durable material, think I’ll get a couple of years of full-time RV living out of it. Seasonal users can get more if they store it safely when not in use.

If one ever springs a leak you just cut off the ends and take them, with the receipt and UPC, back to the retailer for a replacement. We travel with a 25 and a 50 in our LTV Unity.

We have owned a few Camco TASTEpure Drinking water hoses and I can personally tell you that they work great in cold weather. We lease a spot on a lake in N. Carolina and we come to our RV even in the winter. The hose has kept our water free from freezing. We have never had a problem with it. Ed D.

There are several key reasons why this isn’t a good idea, which we’ll discuss in just a few moments.

Do I Need a Special Water Hose for RVs?

You should never use a standard garden hose for your RV water hose and instead should always use either an RV or marine hose intended for freshwater, which tends to be either blue or white.  

But why is that?

Why can’t you just use a standard garden hose for your RV?

Well, it turns out for quite a few reasons, which we’ve listed below.

• Not rated for potable water, which is a fancy way of saying they’re not rated for drinking water.

How Long Should an RV Water Hose Be?

An RV water hose should ideally be at least 25 feet and no more than 50 feet.

As this range in length will handle the majority of RV hookup situations, while still keeping the hose small enough so that it’s easy to manage and store.  

However, there is often debate in the RV community on how long an RV water hose should be.

As some RVers prefer to have one 50-foot hose that can handle almost any hookup situation.

While it’s not mandatory to connect a water filter to your RV water hose, most RVers opt to do so, and it’s generally recommended.  

Because while most campgrounds and RV park water sources are classified as safe for drinking, unless posted otherwise.

Public and private water sources, such as municipal water or well water, which is where the majority of campgrounds and RV parks get their water from are not all created equal.

As municipal water sources according to the water quality association can contain contaminants such as:

While well water sources according to the  United States Environmental Protection Agency can contain contaminants such as:

In addition, both municipal and well water can contain suspended solids, sand, silt, and other sediments, which can damage your RV plumbing system, appliances, and plumbing fixtures over time.

So while connecting a water filter to your RV water hose is not absolutely necessary, it’s definitely a best practice, to further filter and purify the water coming into your RV.

How Do You Keep an RV Water Hose Containment Free and Safe for Drinking?

While an inline RV water filter can go a long way to keep your RV water hose and the water coming into your RV containment free and safe for drinking.

There are several other best practices you can use beyond just an RV water filter to further sanitize and keep the water coming into your RV safe for drinking, which we’ve highlighted below.

• Before storing an RV water hose, connect the two ends of the hose together to prevent dirt and contaminants from getting inside the hose.
• Periodically sanitize the hose ends by spraying the connection points with a solution of nine parts water to one part bleach.  Before thoroughly rinsing the connection points with pure water. 
• Spray down the campsite faucet with the same 9 parts water 1 part bleach solution and then run some water through it, before connecting the RV water hose to the campsite water hookup.
• Store all RV freshwater hoses as well as any filters and fittings in a separate sealed bin or plastic container.  
• If your RV has a black water flush, always use a separate dedicated hose for the black water flush.
• To prevent cross-contamination between the RV sewer hose and freshwater hose always use gloves when handling the sewer hose and sanitize your hands afterward.
• Keep the hose ends and connection points off the ground and out of the dirt. 
• Sanitize your RV freshwater holding tank twice a year, with 1 cup bleach and a thorough flush and rinse.

How Often Should You Change Your RV Water Hose?

Quality RV water hoses should last for at least 10 years or more, as long as they’re properly cared for.

And do not need to be replaced unless the connection points have been damaged or they’re leaking.

How to Store and Properly Care for an RV Water Hose

• Use a 90-degree hose elbow fitting to reduce stress on the connection point where the hose connects to the RV.
• Use an inline water pressure regulator to keep the water pressure in the hose as well as in the RV at a safe consistent 40 to 50 pounds of pressure to prevent stress or damage to the hose and your RV plumbing system.
• Keep the hose out of the sun whenever possible, as UV damage can greatly shorten its life expectancy.

A hose is a hose … or is it? Before you’re tempted to save a buck by connecting a garden hose to your RV freshwater tank, stop and read this article. There are good reasons why RV supply stores want to sell you a real RV freshwater hose instead.

What’s the Difference Between a Garden Hose and RV Drinking Water Hoses?

On the surface you might think that all water hoses are the same. And RV drinking water hoses cost at least twice as much as a garden hose. If you’ve ever wondered if putting an “RV water hose” label onto a hose is just a marketing ploy, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, the truth is, RV drinking water hoses are not just a gimmick.

The important differences between a garden hose and an RV water hose can mean the difference between putting poison into your body or staying healthy.

Connecting a garden hose for RV drinking water purposes puts you at great risk of health issues now and in the future. Is your life worth saving a few pennies? What about your loved ones? Don’t answer until you review the chart below comparing garden hose materials with RV drinking water hose material.

Garden Hose

• Often made from unregulated e-waste materials
• Usually contain unregulated amounts of lead, BPA, and phthalates
• Another toxic “plasticizer” used to make garden hoses includes  polyvinyl chloride , a substance connected to various cancers and health problems.

RV Drinking Water Hose

• Must meet a set of federal standards
• Drinking water hoses must comply with the  2014 Federal Safe Drinking Water Act
• Materials can withstand UV breakdown and chemical leakage into water.
• RV drinking water hose materials don’t have BPA or phthalate toxins
• A “DWS” Drinking Water Safe hose is NSF certified and FDA approved.
• Water tastes better.

Still not convinced? Maybe the experts from the Healthy Stuff research center can change your mind. “Gardening hoses appear to be a dumping ground for highly contaminated e-waste. Over one-third [38%] of the hoses have the fingerprint of recycled e-waste being used,” said Jeff Gearhart, Research Director, HealthyStuff.org. “Products designed to handle water should never have e-waste material used as filler just to save a dime.”

The only surefire way to know your hose is safe is if it does NOT have the California Prop. 65 warning that says “ this product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm .” Buy an RV water hose without that warning and you can prevent health problems. For extra safety, add a high quality RV water filter system for a higher level of protection.

What to Look for in an RV Water Hose

It’s just not safe to use a garden hose for your RV water supply. Don’t fill your freshwater tank with it, and don’t connect a garden hose to an RV water hookup either. Now it’s time to consider what to look for in an RV hose.

Choose a white or blue drinking water hose.

These colors make them easy to tell apart from an ordinary garden hose. Carry a short hose length and a longer one in your RV.

Each hose serves a distinct purpose. We carry one well-marked 10-foot hose to fill jugs of non-potable water if we need to do it from a campground spigot. And the 50-foot blue hose is our RV drinking water supply line. The two never come in contact with one another.

Short on Space? Try a Lightweight RV Drinking Water Hose.

These hoses are relatively new on the market. If your RV storage space is limited, the Aqua Pro or Aqua Joe lightweight RV water hoses can be a good option. Both manufacturers make them with BPA-free, drinking water safe materials.

Avoid cheap RV drinking water hoses.

In my experience, a cheap RV water hose is exactly that: cheap! I’ve tried low-cost standard RV drinking water hoses, and cheap flexible hoses. Neither one lasted more than a year. Inexpensive RV water hoses may not cost a lot of money up front, but they don’t last long either. However, if you only RV occasionally, a low-cost hose might be a reasonable option.

If you are a full-time RVer or plan to become one, invest in a better quality drinking water hose. They’re just like RV sewer hoses , and other must-have full-time RV supplies. You get what you pay for.
