Invention Turns RV into Houseboat

An Arizona inventor created a way to transport a travel trailer or motorhome on water, turning an RV into a houseboat.

The Transportable RV Houseboat provides consumers the ability to transport RVs to multiple bodies of water, InventHelp said.

“I thought there should be a convenient, affordable way to enjoy time out on any river or lake,” the Sahuarita, Arizona-based inventor said, “enjoying many, if not all, of the conveniences of a houseboat via the capabilities, conveniences and familiarities of your own travel trailer or motor home. My design would allow you to easily convert your RV into a houseboat.”

InventHelp said the invention provides a safe, stable, effective way to transport a travel trailer or motorhome on water. The transport features motorized capabilities, which InventHelp said adds fun and entertainment.

The invention features a safe, consumer-friendly and cost-effective design, InventHelp said. Additionally, a prototype is available.

The original design was submitted to the Tucson sales office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers.

Travel like a super spy with the Caracat, an amphibious RV that morphs from camper to boat. Using a patented pontoon system, the Caracat can expand when owners want to take their roadtrip on the water.

Even before James Bond showed off his submarine car in 1977’s film “The Spy Who Loved Me,” the idea of driving an amphibious vehicle has titillated our collective imagination.

Nearly a half-century later, the Caracat aims to fulfill that long-time dream.

The Caracat — the name of both company and product — is a towable camper with an expandable pontoon system for travel on water. With a tiny outboard motor, you won’t keep up with any super villains, but you’ll be able to chill in style and get around on the water.

Its designers seem to clearly understand what consumers would want from a vehicle like this. Heating and air conditioning? Check. Solar-powered battery system? Check. Wine cooler? Pop the cork, my dear.

Built, with a fiberglass hull and available in a few different sizes, the Caracat takes on the label of “luxury camper hybrid.”

“Equipped with superior technology and furnished with every imaginable luxury, this vehicle is a realization of a dream,” the company says on its website .

Caracat: Design Details

In essence, the Caracat comes equipped with all the basics of an off-grid camper trailer. It’s got both freshwater and gray water tanks, a refrigerator , and a small kitchen.

If you’ve ever been on a powerboat, then the navigation system and deck equipment will look familiar. Thanks to its humble 8-horsepower electric motor, the basic Caracat also remains cost-efficient and easy on the environment.

If going slow sounds like a drag, it’s possible to upgrade the Caracat to a 100-horsepower setup. Customers could opt for gas and diesel energy options for the camper’s utilities as well, like climate control and kitchen appliances.

The German engineering behind the Caracat is also focused on sustainability with its toilet. The boat burns all human waste to avoid pollution (according to the brochure , which did not elaborate on this).

Is There Something Fishy About the Caracat?

While a camper that can double as a boat sounds appealing, we can’t help but notice there’s no actual proof of the Caracat launching or floating in water.

The images supplied by the company appear to be renderings Photoshopped onto gorgeous watery landscapes. Seems a little fishy to us (pun intended).

Caracat: Models & Pricing

With its retractable pontoons, owners can tow the Caracat on public roads, with standard lanes being 8 feet wide. When expanded, the vehicle becomes about 12 feet wide.

The Caracat comes in three models: 66, 76, and 86. These names refer to their length in meters: 6.6 m (22 feet), 7.6 m (25 feet), and 8.6 m (28 feet). Other than expanded space, the brochure doesn’t mention many additional features of the various models.

Caracat declined to post any prices for its camper hybrid on its website. New Atlas reports that the Caracat starts at around $130,000 for the smallest model.

That price tag is pretty competitive for similar-sized luxury camper trailers , and those aren’t also a boat. Not to mention the original Lotus submarine car from “The Spy Who Loved Me,” which sold at auction in 2013 for $864,600.

We’ve covered the compact Sealandar caravan in the past, and now we’ve found a larger version made by Germany-based Caravanboat that combines a camper and houseboat in one.

Called Departure One , the 30-foot long camper sits on a trailer and consists of a seawater resistant aluminum hull. The inside can sleep four people and a small shower and washbasin sits just behind the sleeping area. A closet provides room for clothes and gear, and a kitchen boasts a sink, microwave, fridge, stovetop, and storage for cooking tools. A fairly spacious living room can also provide more sleeping options, while more cabinets and LED lights bring the comforts of home.

The one extra spot not usually found in campers is the boat steering wheel, which looks out the front of the camper and huge plexiglass windows. Those same panorama windows also include a wing door window to allow access in and out. The abundance of windows makes the camper feel more boat-like, as does the rooftop deck complete with seats and solar power.

Other amenities—like a backup camera—are more typical of a camper, so it’s clear that in many ways the Departure One brings together the best of both worlds. A few different color options are available and the starting price is $67,448. Of course, that’s the price in Europe and the campers aren’t available here in the U.S., but it’s always fun to see how designers across the pond are innovating. For more info, head over here .

Houseboat/RV Combo! 1972 SeaCamper

Why not combine the best features of a houseboat and a small RV into a single unit that can also cruise comfortably on the water? That’s exactly what the creators of the SeaCamper did in the early 1970s. There’s a small but devoted following of these fairly unique vehicles today, and if you like the idea as well you can purchase this one that is listed for sale here on eBay . Bidding has just broached the $3,500 mark and the hybrid home is located in the aptly named Three Rivers, Michigan.

A check of this March 1970 Popular Science article illustrates that the design was pretty good at both being a boat and a camper, and even mentions that the boat can “climb onto plane” in only four seconds. The special trailer supports the hull more substantially than a typical boat trailer and those cool-looking fold-down stairs work both on the ground and in the water. I can easily see how a family looking for recreational activities would be intrigued by the possibilities offered by a SeaCamper!

While it’s obvious that even the original designers recognized the styling limitations of the multi-purpose configuration, a shiny like-new SeaCamper would be impressive in the driveway, at least! Apparently, however, only about 600 were produced according to an owners’ group, so the idea didn’t take off quite as much as anticipated.

As far as this particular SeaCamper goes, it’s been unused for the past four years due to family illness and has been in storage. A test tow of 15 miles a week ago to a lake passed without incident (although we’re not told if the boat went in the water) and the original trailer seems intact, albeit with some rust on the fenders. I would be really interested in the lake-worthyness of the hull and stern drive. The owner suggests that new batteries will be needed at a minimum.

Plenty of room in the kitchen and a full bathroom is included. While of course it’s dated in appearance, if this stuff is still functional I could live here for a while!

Here’s a surprise! Rather than the original 120 or 160-horsepower Mercruiser engines mentioned in the Popular Science article, this has a crate 454-cubic inch engine that was fitted at a cost of $12,000 at the time. Based on the cleanliness of the engine compartment it wasn’t done that long ago, but that’s an inquiry I’m sure the seller could answer. I’ve actually sent the owner some questions about this SeaCamper; if I get responses I’ll add them to this post. Do you like the idea of a vintage camper/boat combo as much as I do? Update 8/10: I asked if this was the dual helm version; the seller reported that was only on later SeaCampers, and that the roof only has the horn and light as seen in the pictures.

So was the design supposed to be duel usage? This doesn’t look light but kind of a cool idea. Small camping type boat. So the range was cut when the big Chevy moved in as I doubt the fuel tank was enlarged. A lake or a river might be ok but it’s old and the systems may need updated or replaced. Most boats don’t age well.

Nice one, Jamie! I could easily live in this thing on Lake Superior, at least seven months a year. It’s definitely cheaper than a house to maintain and has no property taxes, basement leaks, roof leaks, etc. Although, I guess you wouldn’t want the “basement” to leak in this SeaCamper when you’re in a lake.

I’m digging this, but unfortunately, whenever you buy a boat you almost always end up “under water” financially. But how cool would it be to tell all of your friends that you own “Water Bug- Land Beetle”

I would wind up using the trailer for something else, the boat would become a field Ornament for the grand kids to play in or build a pond around it and rent on air b&b

same as any other vehicle (car, truck, camper), depreciates. Needs constant maintenance. Gorsh – same on ur house.

I like the trailer’s added outriggers (in/out door rug padding?). Would like even more inspection of that trailer. May B need to beef it up.

Water ways were the nation’s hwys for a long time. Like to drive between and explore these ‘back yard streets”. What’s it’s draft? Also uncertain on it’s length, use on blue (open) water. Example: can I drop off at Cape Cod, pick up on Chesapeake Bay? My idea ofa nice 3, 4 day cruse. The wife, not so much, let her run the p/u – haul vehicle.

See, the thing with this, IDK how much you are going to use it, I mean, where you going to go, that wouldn’t cost a fortune. I can only imagine this thing, as equipped, gets maybe 2 gallons/ mile? 3 gallons? I suppose you could live in a boat slip, but I think it would make a dandy house for on land. Properly anchored, I’d think it would weather storms pretty well. Or, leave it on the trailer and use it as a camper, but for any big body of water, I’ve seen the Great Lakes get ugly, and trust me, even a 728 foot iron ore freighter isn’t safe,,,as the story goes,,,.

we had one when I was a kid – bought new around 1973.

What fun this would be here in Florida! Since we have water almost everywhere, you could explore the state in a way you couldn’t before. And since my favorite see-loon has lakefront access, I could have my future BIL drive it there, tie it up at the dock, tie one on, and then sleep it off before I’d take it back to my house. I saw a guy do this last Sunday when we went to see a friend of ours play music there. But, you know what they say about a boat: Bust Out Another Thousand.

I rented one for a week with wife and 2 kids on Florida vacation. Had a ball. Stuck to the intercoastal waterway ’cause I question it’s stability in the open Gulf. And frankly, I wouldn’t want to be far from shore on any of the Great Lakes with it.

Theres one thats been sitting at the local yacht club , no engine and gutted interior , a bit rough but the hull is fine. My wife is not on board with me acquiring it. And it would cost next to nothing. It has a bracket for a small outboard and an acme plug in the I/O hole. Not sure if the flip steps are there. If I put a “Boston whaler” emblem on the side everyone would want it.

I will look to see if its there the next time I go by it, I dont recall it being there and the I/O was removed long ago and the hole plugged and a small outboard bracket is on it so it may not have been necessary in their eyes. A few years back I did get inside it and it was pretty empty, essentially gutted.

I bought my Sea Camper about a year ago ,it is a 1978 with fly bridge in really good shape but it does not have the lower flip stairs. Super hard to find. Not sure what to think of this one! The tri hull would be the absolute worst choice in styles in any kind of waves what do ever, would beat the people in the boat and the boat itself to pieces in short order. With the BBC in there the cut the range by a good margin, and what did they do to the outdrive to accommodate the new engine? Last but certainly not least, it’s OLD every piece of this thing is going to need attention, time and money, then do it all again, and again, you get my point!

Can’t Decide Between a Boat or RV? This $130K Travel Trailer Promises to Do Both

Labor Day weekend and the summer travel season may be in the rearview mirror, but one new concept isn’t ready to wave goodbye to warm-weather fun. The Caracat , an RV idea from the Heidelberg, Germany-based company of the same name in partnership with Schneider Caravaning , is a travel trailer–catamaran hybrid meant to take you from country roads to lakeside campsites—and directly onto the water.

When taking to the road, the Caracat's pontoons would tuck inward, making it no wider than a full-size SUV.

The design’s primary innovation is its deployable pontoons. With them tucked under, in theory, the Caracat’s slender profile would make it easy to be tow down backcountry roads. With the pontoons extended, the craft would become a vessel with double hulls like a catamaran, increasing its stability threefold when compared to a design without, says the manufacturer, since it would both raise the vessel off the water and widen its footprint. Apparently it’s why double hulls are favored by everyone from America’s Cup racers to Lake Tahoe leisure-boaters.

The best version of the transforming RV, if built, will be when it’s on the water. When deployed, the pontoons are designed to become decking that meet more deck at the bow and stern to create a wrap-around patio. A portion of the roof would be able to open to expand the ceilings, while the other side of the roof would offer additional covered seating space.

A ride aboard a Caracat would offer a luxe stay. The design includes teak-surfaced built-in furniture, flat-screen TVs, and a granite-finished bathroom and kitchen. Also depicted are comforts like heating and air conditioning, and a solar-powered refrigerator and wine cooler for storing beverages while on water or land.

As slick as the Caracat seems, it’s not the first watercraft designed to be slipped back onto its boat trailer and slept in like an RV. The Sealander , a teardrop sleeper with a hatch, can be towed to waters edge and sent out to sea, so to speak. That design came out more than a decade ago.

The Caracat’s plans and renderings, however, don’t just look roomier than the Sealander; they show actual rooms. The company says the largest model is 28-feet long—it plans to offer three different sizes—and will be large enough to comfortably fit six.

One of the company’s smaller models comes in a gray color.

Make no mistake: the Caracat isn’t designed to go fast. The company says solar panels will power an 8-horsepower electric motor. But buyers will have the option to upgrade to a 25-horsepower diesel inboard engine, should they desire an extra boost. Chances are, if you’re the leisure type, the as-is design will be just your speed.

Prices aren’t listed at Caracat’s website, but at the recent Dusseldorf Caravan Salon, a representative from the company told New Atlas that the entry-level model—the smallest—retails for €130,000, or roughly $129,500.
