Hello Road Trip .com

Hotel along the route for your road trip

“How can I find a hotel along my route on a road trip?” It’s a question asked by an incredible number of people. More than on any other trip, it’s always a good idea to plan things in advance for a road trip. Of course, this applies in the first instance to the route you are going to take. For us Americans, for example, we like to take a road trip through countries the States, Canada and Mexico, but also the somewhat further away Iceland (halfway between the US and the European mainland) lends itself perfectly for such a holiday. In any case, are you also considering a road trip, but would you like to find out how to book a hotel? Then find out all about it on this page!

Why book a hotel in advance?

This is a question that most people ask themselves when, for example, they want to undertake a road trip for the first time. Booking a hotel along your route in advance is interesting for several reasons. Think of the following advantages:

1.      You know exactly how much the night in question will cost you;

2.      You don’t have to take the plunge and you know what to expect;

3.      During the roadtrip you do not lose time looking for a place to spend the night;

4.      You can never be confronted with a fully booked hotel;

Unfortunately, many people don’t plan their road trip well enough. This is especially annoying because you might not be able to fully enjoy your road trip. The last thing you want to do is lose a lot of time looking for a nice place to spend the night.

Saving on the cost of your hotel stay

In addition to the above, the question “how economical is it to book a hotel along my route” is one that pops up very often. Also in this respect it is always a good idea to make the reservation(s) in advance. For example, booking a hotel along your route using our road trip planner ensures that you are always assured of a good price. By the way, this price can no longer be adjusted, for example due to high occupancy! If you don’t book your hotel in advance, it is possible that you will eventually be confronted with a considerably higher price tag. This is no fun – and it can have a significant impact on your travel budget.

How can I book a hotel along my route?

Are you still wondering how, exactly, to book a hotel along your route? Let’s address that now! On this website you will find a special road trip planner. By using this planner you will be able to book your desired accommodation(s) in no time. In principle you only need to indicate three things. These are the following:

1.      The departure point of your road trip;

2.      The place where the road trip ends;

3.      Exactly how long you want to drive every day; Once you have given us the above information, we can help answer your questions immediately. Our system will immediately show you all accommodations that match the information you have provided. It’s a great help! In any case it should be clear, booking a hotel along the route of your road trip is not something you do without using our road trip planner!

I am planning a road trip using the famous Mother Road, Route 66. I want to stay at all choice hotels along the way. They can be out of the way, but as close to RT-66.

How to choose hotels along your route: A 101 guide

trip planner driving with hotels

There’s nothing quite like a road trip – hitting the open road and visiting places you’ve never been to is one of life’s greatest pleasures. But, mapping out your route and booking all your hotels ahead of time is important to make sure you have the most fun-filled, safe, and stress-free trip possible.

One of my favorite road trips (that I’ve taken more times than I can count) is driving from Austin to Big Bend National Park. Watching the landscape morph from urban sprawl to breathtakingly beautiful, wide-open desert always makes me feel distinctly alive, in the best way possible.

For me, on trips like this planning is not just about finding hotels along my route. It’s a step-by-step process .

Plan where you want to stop , from local attractions to restaurants. Secure all your lodging reservations , and consider different accommodation options if there are no hotels, like motels and bed-and-breakfasts.

Using KAYAK's travel tools, like the Trip Calculator and the mobile app, is the perfect way to do this while taking advantage of loyalty programs and discounts. With the app, you can also access your travel plans offline.

Let's dive in.

In this post

Plan ahead for a smooth journey, utilize kayak tools.

  • Check for hotel amenities and services

Leverage KAYAK mobile

Consider alternate accommodation options.

A motorway running along the foothills of a massive mountain range.

When it comes to road-tripping , nailing the correct mixture of planning and spontaneity is key.

You know your destination, but figuring out your route and where you’ll stop will save you a lot of time (and stress).

To plan the best route, try not to spend too many hours driving per day – it’s more fun if you can stop to see things along the way.

If you have ample vacation time, plan on driving a maximum of five or six hours per day .

In terms of where to stay, consider small-to-mid-sized towns if affordability is a concern, and opt for cities if your primary goal is to stay near attractions and restaurants.

Book your accommodation

A vibrant motel stands out with its colourful facade, featuring wide glass windows that not only allow abundant natural light to illuminate the interior but also provide a glimpse into the lively atmosphere within.

Once you’ve figured out your route, it’s time to get booking, especially if you’ll be driving during peak travel season or in popular tourist areas.

Some hotels, motels, and campgrounds can sell out months in advance , leaving you without a place to sleep.

Take it from me – I’ve made the mistake on road trips (more times than I care to admit here) of not reserving hotels, only to show up somewhere and have to sleep in my car for the night.

To avoid this, make sure you confirm all your reservations ahead of time . A month is likely fine for small-scale destinations, but for road trips through more popular regions, book three or four months ahead of time.

Discover local attractions

When you’re planning the places you want to stay, this is also a good time to fill in your stops in each town. Do some research and jot down the destinations you want to stop at .

For instance, on my road trip from Austin to Big Bend, I always stop for coffee and tacos in Fredericksburg , check out art galleries in Marfa , and stay at my favorite bed-and-breakfast in Marathon before venturing on to the park.

I also always pack a cooler with water and snacks, since there aren’t a ton of restaurants to stop at in between Fredericksburg and Marfa – and I like saving myself for dinner in Marfa, which has a surprisingly good culinary scene considering it’s in the middle of the West Texas desert.

A dog walking past a car with an open trunk containing luggage and toys.

This brings up another key point, always have a cooler to keep your snacks and drinks cold between meal stops, just in case you end up somewhere that doesn’t have a lot of food options.

You should also pack all the essentials for your trip so you don’t have to make any unnecessary stops. For example, a basic first-aid kit, jumper cables, a spare tire, and a charger for your phone .

Packing smart helps avoid unnecessary stops and ensures you have the smoothest road trip possible.

If you need help mapping out your route and booking the best places to stay, KAYAK has the most helpful tools you can use.

KAYAK’s Map helps you find accommodations close to your route. You can then read reviews to see which hotel best suits you. Sign up for Price Alert to know when hotel prices change for your destination, and receive customized alerts for your road trip locations and travel dates.

Another tool that comes in handy when preparing for a road trip is KAYAK’s Trip Calculator , which helps estimate your travel budget.

On that note, always give yourself a budget before you leave, so you have a realistic idea of what you’ll be spending, and you won’t run the risk of running out of funds on the road.

Check for amenities and services in hotels along your route

An elderly man gives his lover a back hug while looking out the hotel window.

When it comes to finding the best hotels along the route, it’s crucial to have a list of amenities and services that are important to you .

For example, if you’re traveling with kids, you might want to check if the hotel is family-friendly. If you need to get some work done during your trip, high-speed Wi-Fi (and maybe a business center, or at least an in-room desk) is a must-have.

Other amenities to consider looking for include free parking, proximity to attractions you want to see, flexible check-in and check-out times, laundry facilities, and dining options that are on-site or nearby.

If you’re traveling with pets, check that your hotel allows furry friends. Some pet-friendly hotels allow dogs and cats to stay for free or for a small fee.

In your hotel search , use KAYAK's filters to determine which hotels have the amenities and services that suit your needs .

You can select "Freebies" such as free internet and free parking, "Amenities" such as pet-friendly or "Style" of a hotel such as family.

Trust me it will save you a bunch of time and energy.

To take as much stress out of your trip as possible, plan to use a travel app that helps you search hundreds of travel sites at once, see your travel plans offline, and enjoy access to exclusive mobile-only deals.

KAYAK’s all-in-one Mobile App allows you to do all of this and more.

Another feature of this tool is the ability to save searches to your “Wishlist”. This way you can get alerts on when to book the best price.

A family of four walking towards a log cabin in the woods.

So, what should you do if there are no hotels along the route? Or if you haven’t booked far enough i advance? You’ve got a few options in this case (and it never hurts to have a backup plan anyway).

Motels and bed-and-breakfasts are great alternatives to hotels. Or for a good budget-friendly option, campgrounds are readily available in most places .

You will see lots of motels along highways, making them very convenient for road-trippers. Just keep in mind that most motels are no-frills, with little to no amenities.

Still, they’re usually cheap and often have free or discounted parking. If you’ll be gone for a long stretch of time, staying at motels can really help you save money.

Seek out well-known chains with good reviews , as these often have the best standards for cleanliness and hospitality.

Bed-and-breakfasts are another good option when you’re on the road. These are generally houses or otherwise small lodging establishments that offer a home-cooked breakfast with the cost of the room.

The biggest benefit of staying at a bed-and-breakfast is the emphasis on personalized service. Expect a warm welcome from staff who are generally more than happy to provide local recommendations.

Campgrounds

Finally, campgrounds can be convenient and cheap if you are up for it. The best strategy in this case is to have researched campgrounds near where you want to visit or you can ask locals once you are there.

If you want to stay the night in a campground, make sure that this is allowed, that the area is safe and that you can leave any time you need.

A brunette woman drives a car while a dog glances back from the passenger's seat.

Planning the perfect road trip involves work. Rather than just showing up in a place and hoping to find a hotel, it’s best to map out your route and book hotels in advance. For the best way to book hotels and plan the best trip, use tools like KAYAK’s Trip Calculator, Hotel Map, the search filters, and the mobile app.

Road Trip Planner: How to Plan an Epic Road Trip

S ince the advent of the car and the post World War II creation of interstate highways, road trips have been the Great American Way to travel with kids. Parents in the front seat. Kids in the back. The open road ahead.

But, as veteran road trippers know, getting a road trip right takes some serious planning. It starts weeks before the trip, choosing the destination, planning the route and taking the car for a check-up to ensure the vehicle is up to the challenge. (If it’s not, don’t despair. You can always rent a car — most companies offer unlimited mileage options. Check out  these tips for saving money on car rentals .)

Let’s get started.

Read More: The Complete Road Trip Packing List , so you never forget the essentials again!

Road Trip Planner Step 1: Decide Where You Want to Go

There are 5 parts to this:

1. How many days do you have?

This is such an important question because a road trip is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. You’ll want to make time to investigate those intriguing roadside attractions and other points of interest.

2. How many hours a day do you want to spend driving?

If you’re a road trip rookie, err on the side of less, especially if you have younger kids who need to get up and move. Four or five hours a day in the car, with stops every two hours to let the kiddos out of their car seats to run around a rest stop can be plenty. If you only have a few days for your vacation and you only want to drive a few hours, choose a destination closer to home.

3. Get out a map.

I’m talking about an old fashioned, paper map. Decide how many miles you can get in that five-hour trip (five hours @70mph=350 miles). Draw a circle on the map of 350 miles out from your house and spend some time studying the destination options.

4. Have a family meeting.

Discuss the options that are within the  family budget .

Road Trip Planner Step 2: Outline the Route

I’m a map geek so I like planning a road trip the old school way: I get out my Rand McNally book of maps and let my fingers wander, tracing the best route to my planned destination. What I like most about that is it’s easy to find fun detours. It’s how we discovered Plaines, Georgia, and a charming museum about the man from Plaines, former President Jimmy Carter, on a ride home to Chicago from Florida.

But then, I tend to be more of a spontaneous traveler. I like to be able to take the detours. We like the “blue highways,” those little blue lines on the map that connote the non-interstates. It lets us explore the small towns and the places that call themselves towns but feel more like a small gathering of houses along the road.

If you are a super planner who prefers having a well-laid-out plan, there are many easy ways to do that. You can simply let Google maps do the work for you. Plug in your starting and ending points, set a few parameters (highways or not, toll road or not, etc.) and the app will design the trip for you.

Or you can turn to one of these online road trip planner sites:

RoadTrippers

RoadTrippers claims to be the best road trip planner app. It’s the “holy grail” of road trip planning apps. Choose your starting and ending points, then build the trip with suggested attractions and hotel stops.

Visit the USA

Visit the USA offers a bunch of pre-planned road trip itineraries in varying lengths and for different interests, including families, solo, couples, LGBT and more. It also has a option for planning your own road trip route.

My Scenic Drives

Create your trip from hundreds of pre-planned scenic routes on this road trip planner which includes recommended stops.

This is the original trip planner — the one your parents used to plan a road trip, then print out the directions. And it still does the trick.

Road Trip Planner Step 3: Along the Route

You finished the route planner, now you need to figure out where you will spend the nights along the way.

Are you a camping family? If so, you’ll want to research campsites along the way. Do you prefer hotels? Airbnbs? And do you need to have the reservations made before you leave home?

Or does spontaneity work? If so, you’ll want to download the Hotels Tonight app. It’s the one I use to find a room nearby when we’re ready to stop for the night. I find the hotel with the pool, check the price and then call the hotel directly and ask the front desk to match the price. If so, I  book directly with the hotel . If not, I book through the app.

Road Trip Planner Step 4: Pack Right

This is the getting-ready phase. It’s when you do things like make sure the family car is up to the task, the bags are packed, the apps are downloaded and the snacks are bought.

Road Trip Checklist

The first thing on this list should be making sure your family vehicle is up to the task. Take it to the mechanic for a once-over. Have the tires checked, including the spare. Put on new washer blades and fill the washer reservoir. Read this for more pre-trip advice.

Pack Right for the Trip

You have that whole big trunk to fill, right? Or that roof top cargo carrier you bought for the trip. But just because you have all of that space doesn’t mean you have to fill it. Packing light makes just as much sense on a road trip as it does when you’re flying. Extra weight in the car uses more gas, which can add up on a long road trip.

And, if you’ll be checking in to different accommodations each night, you’ll need to drag all of that luggage into the room for the night and back into the trunk the next morning. If that is your road trip plan, pack one overnight bag. Include toiletries, pajamas, a change of underwear and bathing suits for each member of the family. (When you’re choosing the hotel for the night, choose the one with the pool. It can make all the difference to the kids after a whole day in the car.)

Road Trip Planner Step 5:  Download These Apps

Your smartphone is your best friend on a road trip. In addition to whatever road trip planner app you use, download these apps for smooth sailing.

This app has saved me more times than I care to remember. Because we like off-the-beaten path road trips, we don’t see gas stations every few miles like you do along the interstate. Gas Buddy will find the closest station with the best gas prices. And, of course, those oh-so-bad-for-you gas station snacks!

SheBuysTravel Tip : Fill up any time the gas tank gets to half full. Don’t ask me why I know this.

What’s a road trip without a great road trip playlist?

Audiobooks are our favorites for a long road trip. The Harry Potter series read by the incomparable Jim Dale got us from Florida to Chicago several times, then on future Chicago road trips to St. Louis, Kentucky, Mackinac Island and more.

This app or another that provides roadside assistance is one of those peace-of-mind things. If there is a problem along the way, you’ll know who to call for help. AAA also offers hotel and attraction discounts. Find out everything they offer in our full review of AAA.

Wifi Finder

Got kids? You’ll need wifi. There are plenty of ways to find free wifi on the road. There also are apps for finding wifi that work on iPhones and Androids. Read the reviews and test the apps before you leave on your trip.

Road Trip Planner Step 6: Pack the Snacks!

Snacks are the secret to a successful road trip!  Don’t skimp on the snacks. Ever.

Road Trip Tips

If you’re road tripping with kids, you need these tips we learned the hard way:

Keep everyone charged up.

If you’re driving a newish car with a plethora of USB ports and a regular outlet, then I want to road trip with you. But, if you are an average American, the car you drive is more than 12 years old. I am only slightly better than average — my newest vehicle, a Ford Ecape, is a 2017 model. It has one regular plug and one USB port. Count ’em. One. So we supplement with adapters and this  this power strip  so everyone can plug in.

Stop often.

It’s a road trip. The whole point is to be able to meander. So take the detours. Stop at the roadside attractions. Get that Instagram shot of the World’s Largest Ball of Twine. Or whatever oddity you find along the way. At least that’s the way my family has always preferred it. But, some road trippers have a different approach:

Or stop as little as possible.

This is the advice offered by one SheBuysTravels contributor who road trips alone with her kids. Nasreen Stump , who regularly drives from Texas to New Hampshire and back again stops only when she has to. That’s because stopping involves getting four kids out of the car, letting them run a bit, then getting four kids buckled back in.

Choose the hotel with the pool.

Did I mention this already? It was always the “reward” for the kids after a long day in the car.

Google announces new features for travel.

Google has announced several new features for Google Maps and Google Search aimed at helping people find less carbon-intensive ways of traveling and commuting.

One of the key additions is a new EV filter on google.com/travel, enabling users to locate hotels that offer onsite EV charging facilities. Additionally, numerous updates have been made on Maps to facilitate the discovery of charging stations.

When planning a trip, users will now have access to suggested charging stops, forecasted energy consumption, and more.

Google Map EV Charger Stations Updates

Furthermore, in addition to the EV updates, Google Maps will now assist users in finding lower-carbon travel alternatives.

Highlights from Googles Press Release: More sustainable ways to commute & travel:

  • Driving alternatives in Google Maps: When people look up driving directions, we’ll soon show a public transit or a walking suggestion next to driving routes, if travel times are comparable and practical (coming to 15+ cities).
  • Trains & buses in Google Search: You can now see train schedules & ticket prices directly in Search, for rail travel in 38 countries around the world (including the US), as well as long-distance buses in 15 countries. This is an expansion of an existing feature.
  • Train suggestions on Google Flights: In the months ahead, when you’re on Google Flights and there’s a reasonable rail alternative, you’ll see train route suggestions in the flight search results. This builds on similar suggestions we already show in Google Search for flight queries.
  • Travel Impact Model: You can already see estimated emissions in Google Flights, powered by our Travel Impact Model methodology. Now, estimates from the Travel Impact Model are also available through a developer API , a Google Sheets extension and a calculator on the TIM website .

Electric vehicles:

  • Google Maps (all features coming soon):
  • EV Charging Station Pins: We’ll highlight nearby EV charging stations for in-car Maps, with information about station availability and charging speeds.
  • AI-powered summaries for EV charging stations: AI summaries from user reviews will better help users pinpoint charging stations.
  • Multi-waypoint EV trip planning: When users create a multi-stop trip, in-car Maps will suggest required charging stops.
  • Google Search - Hotels:
  • You can use the new EV filter on google.com/travel to find hotels that offer on-site EV charging. This is already live.
