Public Transport in Dubrovnik

Public Transport in Dubrovnik

As befitting a city of this size and location, public Transport in Dubrovnik comprises buses – both the orange buses running city and suburban routes, and airport buses – taxis, boats and ferries. And let’s not forget the cable car that will take you ‘up the hill’ for gorgeous views of the city and beyond! Here’s some detailed information on how to get around Dubrovnik using public transport.

Public Transport in Dubrovnik

Public Transport in Dubrovnik – Local Buses

There are normally 13 bus lines that operate within the city of Dubrovnik itself – lines 1A, 1B, 1C, 2, 2A, 3, 3A, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. You can see a map of these routes here: Dubrovnik bus routes map .

Similarly, you can see timetables of bus departures (meaning, departure times from either end of a line) here: Dubrovnik bus timetables .

You can see live information on bus arrivals on the Vehicle Announcement page of the Libertas Dubrovnik website. For Android phone users, there is a Dubrovnik Bus app that will also provide you with this info.

Pile Gate, the western entrance/exit of the Old Town, is a busy place for Dubrovnik buses. Almost all of Dubrovnik’s bus lines either pass through or start/end here. They are:

  • 1A – Mokosica – Pile: bus starts/terminates at Pile Gate
  • 1B – Mokosica – Pile: bus starts/terminates at Pile Gate
  • 2 – Gorica – Pile: bus starts/terminates at Pile Gate
  • 2A – Glavica – Pile: bus starts/terminates at Pile Gate
  • 3 – Nuncijata – Pile: bus starts/terminates at Pile Gate
  • 4 – Hotel Palace – Pile: bus starts/terminates at Pile Gate
  • 5 – Viktorija – Babin Kuk: bus passes through
  • 6 – Babin Kuk – Pile: bus starts/terminates at Pile Gate
  • 9 – Hospital (Opca Bolnica) – Pile: bus starts/terminates at Pile Gate

You can take lines 1A, 1B, 3 or 8 to travel from the Old Town (Pile Gate) to the main bus station and/or the port, and vice versa.

If you’re staying in the Babin Kuk area of Dubrovnik, you can take buses 2A, 5 and 6 to travel to the Old Town (Pile Gate) and return.

From the Lapad area, buses 2, 4, 5, and 9 go to the Old Town (Pile Gate) and return.

When staying in Dubrovnik, it’s best to ask at your place of accommodation (or locally) for the best bus(es) for you to take to get around.

Buying tickets

You can purchase tickets from newspaper kiosks or from the Libertas stalls (by Pile Gate, for example). Some travel agencies and hotels may also be able to sell you tickets. The price of one ticket is €1.73. (It’s advisable to buy a bunch if you’re planning on doing a fair amount of bus travel.). These tickets must be validated in the machines upon boarding the bus.

It is also possible to buy a bus ticket from the driver upon boarding. These tickets cost €1.99.

The Dubrovnik Card which includes free entry to a number of Dubrovnik’s top sights and museums also includes free bus public transport. The 1-day card allows free bus travel for the full 24 hours. The other cards (3- or 7-day) offer a certain number of free bus rides.

Public Transport in Dubrovnik – Suburban Buses

Several routes operate from the main bus station in Dubrovnik to the little towns west and east of the city.

To the west, for example, bus lines 12, 15, 21, 22 and 35 travel to Zaton Mali and Zaton Veliki; 12, 15, 21 and 22 go to Slano ; 12 and 15 go to Ston at the base of the Peljesac Peninsula and 21 goes (not very regularly!) to Orebic .

To the east, for example, one of the most popular and useful is bus line 10 which runs to Cavtat . Lines 10 and 16 go to Mlini and Plat, whilst number 11 goes to Molunat.

You can look at the Dubrovnik suburban lines maps or the Dubrovnik suburban lines timetables for more information.

It would also be advisable to ask locally for timetable details if you’re planning on using these suburban buses to make sure you have the correct departure times.

Example ticket prices – a one-way ticket to Ston costs €5.31, whilst to Cavtat it is €3.32. You can buy tickets from the bus driver.

Public Transport in Dubrovnik – Airport Buses

There are regular shuttle buses connecting Rudjer Boskovic Dubrovnik Airport with the city. The bus makes two stops on the way to Dubrovnik – by Ploce Gate, just outside the Old Town, and at the main bus station.

You can see the timetable of the shuttle bus on the Platanus website, although buses are generally timed to coincide with flight arrivals. (And departures, for buses going to the airport.)

A ticket costs €10 for a one-way journey (€14 for a return ticket) and can be purchased from the driver once you board the bus. You can also buy tickets in advance on the Platanus website. Journey time is about 30-40 minutes.

For the return journey to the airport, the bus makes additional stops/pick ups. After departing from the main bus station it stops at the Grawe bus stop, just outside the Old Town (by the base station of the cable car) and in front of the One Suite Hotel in Srebreno.

Sightseeing Bus

Dubrovnik also has a sightseeing bus, the open-windowed cabrio bus, which offers sightseeing tours of the city on a 1 hour and 20 minute route. There are several locations around Dubrovnik from where you can be picked up, and the tour offers some of the main sights of the city. More info is on the Dubrovnik Sightseeing website.

There are numerous taxi ranks around the city, including at the main traffic points such as Pile Gate (by the Old Town), the bus station and the port, and of course at the airport too. Taxis are metered and the meter must be switched on before the journey commences, otherwise the fare does not have to be paid.

Uber and Bolt also operate in Dubrovnik, if you already use those apps in other destinations around the world.

Dubrovnik Cable Car

The Dubrovnik Cable Car is one of the more modern elements of public transport in Dubrovnik! Or rather, the cable car that you can travel on today is – for this one was only opened in 2010. There used to be another cable car in the city; that one was opened in 1969 but destroyed in the war in the early 1990s.

Today’s cable car is a lovely modern and very orange affair, taking passengers up to the top of Mount Srd (405m above sea level) in only four minutes. At the top, you’ll enjoy amazing views looking down onto the Old Town, as well as across to other parts of Dubrovnik (see below) and out to sea including over to the islands such as Lokrum. There is a restaurant here should you be in need of some refreshments.

Also here is the impressive Fort Imperijal, built by Napoleon (Dubrovnik was, at that time, under French control), making it over 200 years old. The Fort houses the Dubrovnik in the Homeland War Museum , showing photographs and video displays of the city during the war.

Public Transport in Dubrovnik - Dubrovnik Cable Car

The lower station of the cable car is just ‘above’ Dubrovnik Old Town, taking about 8 to 10 minutes to walk there. (Follow the signposts.)

A return ticket for the cable car costs €26.54, whilst a one-way ticket costs €14.60. For children aged between 4-12, a return ticket is €6.64 one-way is €3.98. Children under age 4 go free. It is easy to just turn up, buy your tickets and board but you can also pre-buy tickets on the Dubrovnik Cable Car website.

Public Transport in Dubrovnik – Boats and Ferries

Obviously, as a busy coastal city, quite a bit of public transport in Dubrovnik relies on boats and ferries to help you reach the local islands!

There are regular boats from the Old Town harbour to the island of Lokrum . The Lokrum Island website details the timetable of sailings to and from the island.

Other ferry or catamaran lines from Dubrovnik include the G&V Line catamaran line that connects the city with the islands of Sipan , Mljet and Lastovo (year-round) and also Korcula in summer.

Jadrolinija runs lines to the three main Elafiti Islands of Kolocep , Lopud and Sipan . In the summer months, they also have a longer-range catamaran that connects Dubrovnik with Mljet, Korcula, Hvar, Brac and Split.

Kapetan Luka also runs a couple of longer-range catamarans. One route operates from Dubrovnik to Mljet, Korcula, Hvar, Brac and Split; the other from Dubrovnik to Mljet, Korcula, Makarska, Brac and Split.

Dubrovnik Port

Should you need to know more information about Dubrovnik’s port, Port Gruz (or Luka Gruz in Croatian), you can do so on the Dubrovnik Port Authority website. Perhaps of most interest is the number of cruise ship arrivals in any one month – this will roughly tell you how busy Dubrovnik Old Town will be! You can look this up under the ‘Traffic’ menu (‘Arrivals/Departures’).

More information

As mentioned, information on bus routes in the city can be found on the Libertas Dubrovnik website.

The Dubrovnik Bus Terminal website displays timetables of intercity routes from Dubrovnik to other places in Croatia. It is also possible to purchase tickets for some lines on this site.

Dubrovnik Buses - Getting Around Dubrovnik

dubrovnik tourist bus

The public transportation system in Dubrovnik relies on road traffic—the public buses. The public bus service is operated by Libertas Bus Dubrovnik, a public company owned by the city.

A long time ago, an electric tram was the main way of transportation in Dubrovnik. Today it’s just a nostalgic memory, as it was discontinued in 1970. They did look cool in the recognizable orange color , though.

Black and white photo of old trams

The local buses kept the orange color that the Dubrovnik trams once had. It makes them easy to spot in traffic. Local bus lines are usually efficient and reliable.

The inner city bus service has 14 bus lines connecting all of Dubrovnik's parts. Most of the local bus lines converge at Old Town.

Tips: The entire town of Dubrovnik is no more than 14.5 square kilometers in size. Deceptively though, the distance between some neighborhoods ranges up to twelve kilometers. It’s the small bays, the hilly terrain, and the swirling roads that play games with your mind, making everything seem close.

Luckily, these areas are scenic, both on foot and on the bus. Aside from the Old Town, discover some beautiful areas like Lapad, Boninovo, or Ploče.

Still, if you’re short on time or don’t fancy long walks, getting familiarized with the local public transportation system comes in handy.

Dubrovnik Bus Tickets

Where to buy bus tickets in dubrovnik.

Local bus tickets are available at many locations. You can buy them at newspaper kiosks, official Libertas stalls at major bus stops, travel agencies, hotel receptions, and in buses.

The official Libertas points of sale are located at the major bus stops:

  • POS Mokošica

Types of Dubrovnik Bus Tickets are:

Single “S” bus tickets

In-bus tickets, two-ride bus ticket.

  • Daily bus ticket
  • Three-day bus ticket

The newspaper kiosks and other sales points sell single “S” tickets. Single fares are valid for exactly one hour (59 minutes to be exact) from the moment of first use for an unlimited number of rides in all directions. The price of a single bus ticket in Dubrovnik is €1.73.

Tips: So, for example, I remember leaving something in my room and need to go back to my hotel in Babin Kuk from Old Town and back. You can do the two rides with the same S ticket if you manage to get on the bus back within 59 minutes. I did make it in time but it was close.

When you buy your bus tickets at a kiosk, the ticket becomes validated once you stamp in upon entering the bus by the driver. Cheaper and not holding up any queues, the S-ticket allows you to switch bus lines.

Let's imagine a scenario when you are walking down the streets of Dubrovnik back to your hotel. You are tired. Then you have a last-second decision to board a bus.

So you wait for the right bus at the station. You see the bus approaching. You do a funny dance to catch the drivers’ attention, and finally, you hop on the bus. But you have no bus ticket with you.

Luckily, you can buy bus tickets directly from the bus driver. The price is €1.99, a bit more expensive than the single bus ticket you buy at the kiosks. Not only that, tickets purchased from the driver are valid only for that one ride. It is not valid for one hour.

Remember, you may only purchase the fare on the bus in cash and only in Euros.

Recently Libertas, the local bus service, introduced the Two-ride bus ticket. From its name, you can deduce that it is valid for two bus rides. The cost of this ticket is €3,19. 80 euro cents cheaper than buying two single tickets.

But unlike the S tickets, each ride with the two-ride bus fare is valid for half an hour from the individual registration.

Daily bus card

It is also possible to buy a Daily bus card exclusively at Libertas Dubrovnik bus kiosks. A daily bus card gets you unlimited bus rides within 24 hours from when you first stamp it. The price of the Dubrovnik Daily bus pass is €5.31 .

You are required to stamp the ticket every time you get on a bus. The card gives you the flexibility to visit more places in a day.

Three-day bus card

Similarly to the Daily bus pass, the three-day one is valid for three days. With it, you can take unlimited rides on local public transit around Dubrovnik for 72 hours. The bus card becomes activated when first used on a bus. This city bus pass costs €11,95.

Children 6 years old and under do not pay for public buses, provided they are accompanied by an adult.

Dubrovnik Pass

Why spend money on buying bus tickets when you can get them for free. They are included in the Dubrovnik Pass. Read my review of the Dubrovnik city Pass here .

Tips: Most likely you are visiting Dubrovnik for the first time and you plan visiting the City Walls. The cost of a Daily City Pass is the same as City Walls tickets, plus you get the Daily Bus ticket that lasts 24 hours for free. Worth it in my book.

The two other Dubrovnik Tourist Pass types are also worth buying if you plan visiting multiple attractions and using busses over several days.

The 3-Day Pass includes the Three-day bus card to match. Similarly getting the Seven-Day Dubrovnik Pass gives unlimited public bus rides for 168 hours

Libertas Bus

The City-owned public bus company Libertas keeps up with trends in public transportation. Most of the buses in Dubrovnik are modern MAN Lion’s City low-floor city bus series, with easy entrance and platforms for wheelchair access . They are generally of a pleasant interior, air-conditioned, and with comfortable seats.

Dubrovnik Bus front entrance doors. Bus number 6 showing it is going to Babin Kuk area.

There is a limited number of seats and standing spots on each bus. They tend to get busy in the peak season, especially on more popular bus lines, for example, number 6 to Lapad .

The good news is that most of these distances, although long in Dubrovnik terms, are quite short, barely over 20 minutes. So even if you are stuck in a crowded bus on a steamy summer day, it won't take long to get to where you are headed.

Entering Dubrovnik Public Bus

Unlike in some other cities, you can only enter local buses from the front door. You need to pass by the driver and validate your ticket. Be prepared to have €2 in change if you don't have one. Otherwise, you risk the rage of the ones waiting longer behind you.

While entering the bus, insert the ticket into the ticket machine next to the driver while the pointer is down and the picture is facing you. This way, you will get it on your first try and not look embarrassed like other tourists fumbling with their cards.

City Bus Stops

Bus stops spread out conveniently around Dubrovnik. They are not too far apart—approximately every 500 meters.

Most bus stops look the same so that they will be easily recognizable. They have transparent glass framed bus waiting shelters and an info-board with schedules of the bus lines that stop there. You can also notice them by the big BUS sign drawn on the road in front of the stop.

Important: The timetables displayed on the bus stations provide information on departure times from where the bus line starts. They do not show the arrival times to bus stops in between the line start and finish stops!

LED info displays are available at major bus stops, informing travelers of waiting times for upcoming buses.

Pile gate bus stop

The Pile bus station is located at Pile Gate, the historic Old Town Dubrovnik entrance. Pile serves as a major transportation hub for visitors and locals. The Pile area can get very hectic in summer, with cars, local public buses and tour buses coming and going, and thousands of pedestrians.

Ten out of the total fourteen bus lines Dubrovnik ends at Pile bus station. From here, visitors can easily catch local buses and connect to any part of Dubrovnik.

Gruz port bus station

The Gruž Port Bus Station in Dubrovnik is what visitors coming in via ships use to get to the other parts of the city. Gruž Port Bus Station is an alternate name for the main bus station in Dubrovnik.

Located next to the ferry port, this bus station is an easy way for cruise ship passengers to explore Dubrovnik. That is if they already don't have shuttle buses waiting for them next to the cruise ship.

From the station, visitors can catch local buses to the Old Town. It is a short 20-minute ride to the city's famous landmarks and historical sites. If you are a cruise ship passenger, the Gruž Bus station is the one you want to go to if you miss your shuttle bus back and are racing back not to miss the boat.

Grawe bus stop

"Grawe" Bus stop is one of Libertas' official POS in central Dubrovnik.

It's named that way after the large building next to it with a large Grawe insurance company sign on top. The sign makes the stop a bit easier to locate for visitors trying to find their way around.

Grawe Bus station is significant as one of the few stops for the shuttle bus going to the Dubrovnik airport.

Dubrovnik Bus Map

Dubrovnik Bus Map is a handy thing to have if you are planning to use the Dubrovnik public bus. The map shows an overview of the city's public bus system. The map includes all the bus line routes, stops, and interesting points in the city.

Dubrovnik Bus Map, a graphic representing the city and all its public bus lines and bus stops

The latest local bus route map design makes it easy to read, with clear information about the bus routes depicted in different colors.

Tips: It is good to use the bus stop map in tandem with Google maps to make sure you are on the right location when trying to get on a specific bus. You don't want to wait half an hour for a bus to Cavtat and realize you are not on bus no. 10 stop.

You don't have to print it out and carry it with you but download the bus map PDF, take a look, and familiarize yourself with it. They are pinned on every bus stop showing where you are on the map.

Libertas Dubrovnik bus timetable

Something you will want to know is that the city bus timetable is quite easy to find. Whether you prefer to plan ahead or go with the flow, you will need to peak at the bus timetable eventually.

The bus timetable is available online on the bus website , at every bus stop, and local tourist information centers.

Bus lines are reasonably well organized. Buses run every 10 to 30 minutes between all neighborhoods in Dubrovnik and the surrounding area.

Checking the up-to-date information on bus departure times, you can time it to be at the stop when it arrives. You'll never have to worry about missing your Old Town restaurant reservation.

Dubrovnik Bus Lines

There are fourteen bus lines connecting all parts of Dubrovnik:

  • Bus 1A : Route Mokošica - Pile
  • Bus 1B: Route Mokošica - Pile
  • Bus 1C: Route Mokošica - Pile
  • Bus 2: Route Gorica -Pile
  • Bus 2A: Route Glavica B.K. - Solitudo - Pile

If you want to travel to the main bus station and/or the port from the Old Town (Pile Gate), you can take lines 1A, 1B, 3, or 8.

There is a high probability you are staying at one of the many hotels and private accommodations located in Lapad and Babin Kuk. The fastest way is by bus number 6, which goes every 15 minutes from Pile station.

Besides line 6, you can take bus routes 2A and 5 between Babin Kuk and the Old Town (Pile Gate) if you stay there.

From Lapad, buses 2, 4, 5, and 9 travel to and from the Old Town (Pile Gate).

Bus ticket info

  • The price of one ticket is €1.73 and those bought on the bus cost €1.99. The tickets are valid for 1 hour and must be validated in the machines upon boarding the bus.
  • Bus tickets are available for purchase at Tisak newspaper kiosks (you can find them all around the city) and Libertas stalls (at major bus stops) as well as some travel agencies and hotel's receptions . You may also buy your bus ticket at the bus, from the driver, but be sure to prepare the exact change as the driver won't have enough change for larger bills.
  • If you are going to use buses all-day long, a 24-hour bus pass might be a good idea. It costs €5.31 and can be purchased from Libertas stalls.
  • The Dubrovnik Pass which includes free entry to a number of museums and City walls also offers free bus transport within the city. The 1-day pass allows free bus travel for the full 24 hours. The other passes (3-day and 7-day) offer a certain number of free bus rides).

Buses from Gruz ferry port to Old Town

One of the most busiest bus routes in Dubrovnik is the one from  the ferry port  to the Old Town. The distance is about 2.5 km and it's usually 15 minutes ride. You'll find 3 bus stops in Gruz : one just outside the cruise terminal , the other one near Jadrolinija office and the last one next to the green market. From these stops you can catch buses 1A, 1B or 3 running towards Pile, which is the western entrance to the Old Town . Once you get off the bus, a short walk will take you to Stradun , the central street of Old Town. From here you can reach any popular sight in Dubrovnik.

At the beginning of Stradun, there is the main entrance to City walls. For relaxing day away from city crowds, take a boat ride to the nearby Lokrum island (from Old Town port). From Pile you can easily reach cable car station , from where you can take 4-minute ride to the top of Mount Srdj, above Dubrovnik. Once you find yourself in front of Pile Gate, take the footway to the left and continue walking along the City walls until you reach large parking lot. Cross the road here, then walk across the parking lot and take the stairs up leading to the cable car station.

Buses from Lapad or Babin Kuk to Old Town

If you are staying in one of many hotels or apartments in Lapad or Babin Kuk area, reaching the Old Town by bus is easy. It's a pleasant 15 minutes bus ride (if there is no traffic jams).

  • The bus no.6 runs from early morning until 1:00am every 15 minutes on this route. This bus departs from Babin Kuk (close to Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel , Hotel Neptun and many other hotels) and drives through Lapad area, then reaching Gruz bay (where you'll find  City Hotel Dubrovnik and Boutique Hotel Porto ) and continuing the drive towards the Old Town.
  • Bus no.4 connects Hotel Palace and Lapad bay with Old Town, with departures every 20 minutes. Departing from the bus stop close to Hotel Palace, this bus pass near numerous hotels in Lapad bay ( Hotel Uvala , Hotel Adriatic , Hotel Kompas , Grand Hotel Park and others) then continue the ride via Iva Vojnovica road ( Hotel Lero , Hotel Rixos Premium Dubrovnik and Hotel Bellevue ) towards Old Town.
  • In addition there are also buses 2, 5 and 9 running from Lapad/Babin Kuk to Old Town but with reduced timetables.

Buses from Lapad and Babin Kuk (hotels) to Gruz ferry port

If you are catching one of catamarans/boats from Gruz port, for example those to nearby Elaphite islands or further to Mljet or Korcula  and staying in Lapad, bus no.7 would be the obvious choice. This bus will take you to the port in only 10 minutes but be aware that the departures are not so frequent (every hour). Gruz port is the spot from where most of boat tours to the Elaphites departs (usually in the morning hours). We suggest taking  this daily trip by historic karaka boat .

Suburban buses in Dubrovnik

There are also several routes that operate from main bus station in Dubrovnik to little places north and south of the city. To the north, bus lines 12, 15, 21, 22 and 35 travel to Zaton Mali and Zaton Veliki; 12, 15, 21 and 22 go to Slano; 12 and 15 go to the little town of Ston and 21 rides to Orebic.

To the east, one of the most popular buses is bus no.10 that runs to Cavtat. Lines 10 and 16 are useful for reaching Mlini and Plat (Zupa Dubrovacka), while no.11 goes to Molunat ( Konavle ). Note that suburban buses are not so frequent so it's recommended to check the timetable in-advance. For accurate bus timetables of buses running to suburban places, check Libertas website ( East & West ).

Shuttle buses to the airport

There are regular shuttle buses connecting Dubrovnik Airport with the city. The buses stop at Ploce Gate (the eastern entrance to the Old Town) and main bus station in Gruz (close to the ferry port).

A ticket costs €10 for a one-way journey (€14 for a return ticket) and can be purchased from the driver once you board the bus. You can also buy tickets at the airport counter or even online. Journey time is about 30-40 minutes. The great alternative to the shuttle buses is hassle-free private transfer, which costs the same as local taxi and can be booked in-advance .

Dubrovnik is the beating heart of an exciting region that calls for more than just a mini-break © urbazon / Getty Images

Gorgeous Dubrovnik bundles UNESCO-listed heritage with verdant nature, a stunning coastline with fascinating villages, an enthralling history with Game of Thrones- oriented pop culture and a plethora of options with a laidback vibe.

At the southernmost point of Croatia , Dubrovnik is cut off from the motherland by a small nook of Bosnia & Hercegovina that bisects the Croatian coast, and it's also the country’s last town before Montenegro . Within these international borders, Dubrovnik was once an independent republic, and today, it's the pulsing heart of an exciting region that calls for more than just a mini-break.

Here's what you should know before you go.

The Dubrovnik cable car descends Srd hill during sunset

1. Plan to see more than just the old town, and to put in some time

Many visitors to Dubrovnik make the mistake of thinking there’s not much more to the town than the whitewashed walled city. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the city’s symbol and a bucket-list item for travelers all over the world, so make the most of it before venturing further afield.

Spend a day or two exploring the grid of stone streets and taking in the fascinating sights, from palaces, towers and churches to Game of Thrones' King’s Landing backdrops. Marvel at the carpet of terracotta roofs from the city walls, then head up to Srđ hill for dazzling panoramas that showcase Dubrovnik beyond its historic core.

In Gruž Bay, the port, you can roam the green and fish markets , travel back to the Yugoslav era at the Red History museum , and dance to DJ-spun beats at  Klub Dubina . Soak up colorful sunsets from the Lapad Bay seafront  and take a dip at one of the many pebbly beaches.

Hop a ferry to nearby Lokrum , or venture out to serene Mljet Island and its forested national park. Sip bold red in the wineries on Pelješac Peninsula and discover folklore in the Konavle Valley, all while indulging in the easygoing local lifestyle.

2. Beware of the borders

If you're driving from Split to Dubrovnik, or if you intend to visit the Ottoman gem of Mostar , you'll have to cross the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and visiting the stunning Kotor requires crossing the border with Montenegro. To avoid hassle and disappointment, start your planning by checking the entry requirements first.

For worry-free travel from Split to Dubrovnik, consider swapping the wheels for a catamaran like Krilo , then island-hopping along the way.

3. Beachwear, slip-proof footwear and layers are the key to smart packing

The locals in Dubrovnik dress casually but stylishly. Your suitcase should feature the summer classics, from shorts and airy dresses to all things sun and beach, from bathing suits and flip-flops to hats, shades and sunblock. Don't forget to pack a light scarf and a rain jacket for breezy evenings and summer showers.

In September and October, layers that account for the wind and rain are the way to go. At all times, bring slip-proof footwear, as the shiny limestone streets are notorious for being slick at the slightest drizzle.

4. Book accommodations and restaurants in advance

Arriving in Dubrovnik spontaneously and hoping to find a place to stay in the high season is pretty much a recipe for disaster. Small and popular, Dubrovnik gets busy and fully booked easily, especially in luxury hotels and popular private accommodations.

Same goes for popular restaurants: if your palate yearns for a certain place, make a reservation a few days ahead to avoid disappointment, except for the Michelin-starred 360° , which you should book a month in advance.

Summer scene of the main street (Stradun or Placa), with locals, tourists and a woman eating an ice cream cone

5. Walk or take a bus, but never ever drive to the old town

One single-lane road leads to the old town, and at its end, scarce and expensive parking is highly unlikely to be available. So swap the drive for a stroll or a bus ride: compact and scenic, Dubrovnik is very walkable, and the public bus network covers the city areas very well.

6. In the old town, keep your clothes on and mind your manners

While it may be easy to confuse all of Dubrovnik for a beach, the old town is a lived-in neighborhood with schools, churches and institutions, so remain respectful at all times.

An authentic reenactment of Game of Thrones' Cersei's walk of shame might sound fun, but visitors to the old town are  expected to remain fully clothed at all times. If visiting churches, honor the sacred space by covering your shoulders and taking off your hat. Refrain from using your phone, turn your ringer off and never sightsee during service.

7. Be mindful when asking questions about the war

The Yugoslav attacks and the shelling from 1991 to 1992 left Dubrovnik shattered and deeply wounded. This is not a topic to be approached lightly; you may ask questions in a respectful manner, but be aware that some people prefer not to talk about it.

8. Get a Dubrovnik Card

Many find the prices of attractions around Dubrovnik to be on the higher side, but the Dubrovnik Card grants access to the main sights, plus free bus tickets and discounts in shops and restaurants. Depending on whether you go for a one-day, three-day or seven-day card, it'll include entry to the city walls and museums, like the Rector’s Palace or the Franciscan Pharmacy, plus discounts for Lokrum and Mljet Island.

9. Pay by card but tip in cash

Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it's generally expected and much appreciated. In restaurants, the magical number is around 10%, while in bars you can round up the bill.

Aside from Amex, credit cards are widely accepted, but you'll need to carry cash for tips, as it's rarely possible to add it to the credit card slip. Don’t be surprised when asked whether you’re paying with cash or card before seeing the bill; Croatian tax authorities require input of that information before the bill is printed.

10. Nurse your espresso and steer clear of to-go cups

Croatians take drinking coffee seriously. This is a favorite local pastime and social ritual, so if you're invited for coffee, try not to pass. Whether you take an espresso or bijela kava (latte), sip it slowly and never take it in a to-go cup.

11. Ditch bottled water and refill on fountains

Tap water is drinkable in Dubrovnik, and in the old town, you can refill your bottle from the fountains, like the two  Onofrios , which have the coolest water around.

12. Relax and enjoy, but exercise common sense

With a tight-knit community and generally well-lit areas, Dubrovnik remains a very safe city, both day and night. While hard crime is low, do exercise common sense when in crowds, as pickpockets turn up on occasion.

There, the staff confirms your arrival day to Dubrovnik. The same arrival date indicates the date of activating the Dubrovnik Pass.

Dubrovnik Bus Station

Dubrovnik Home » Dubrovnik Bus Station

Dubrovnik’s main bus station or terminal (locally called Autobusni Kolodvor ) is located right next to the ferry terminal in Gruž harbor/suburb on about 3 km from the Old Town (see the map below).

the main bus terminal in dubrovnik

It is a modern and large, recently built terminal which features bus information and booking window, baggage (luggage) storage , very useful Dubrovnik Tourist Board Information window, pay toilets, ATM machine , public telephone boxes, newsagent stand…

A small shop where you can buy necessary items, as well as Croatian phone cards, is also there while a larger Konzum supermarket is nearby too.

The terminal is very practical and well organized with a large shaded waiting area which is pretty useful in the summer months if you have to wait for a bus for longer.

All buses from and to Dubrovnik depart and arrive at this bus station including all international bus lines as well as buses to major Croatian places (like from and to Split) . The Bus to Dubrovnik Airport also departs from here as well as Dubrovnik to Cavtat bus.

Dubrovnik Hotels - Book Now!

The Station has very good local bus connections with other parts of the town as several local buses run from here to the Old Town, Lapad, Ploče, Kono, or Sveti Jakov .

You can get the following local buses from this station (see bus map ):

• Bus 1, 1a, 1b , 3 to Pile (Entrance in the Old Town)  ( see video ) •  Bus 7 to Lapad and Babin Kuk •  Bus 8 to Ploče and Sveti Jakov

If none of the local buses is suitable, a handy taxi station is also part of the terminal from where a taxi driver should take you to any part of the town for up to 100 HRK (15 Euro)

Bus Tickets Booking

  • You can not reserve or book bus tickets online . Yes, you can book your bus tickets online. You can also buy your ticket as soon as you arrive in Dubrovnik for a departure of several days or weeks in advance. I would recommend you to do that especially in the summer as buses get very busy at the time, so you can find yourself stranded for a day (or even two) in Dubrovnik. In case you prefer to choose your seating, buying a ticket well in advance is also advisable. As buses leave and arrive almost 24 hrs a day, this main bus station is open from very early in the morning until quite late at night.
