Norwegian Viva Itineraries

Norwegian viva review, review of norwegian viva.

The 2023-built Norwegian Viva cruise ship is the second of all six PRIMA-Class NCL liners constructed in Italy by Fincantieri (Marghera Yard/ Venice ). By volume (142500 GT-tons) Viva's sistership is Prima (2022). From the PRIMA PLUS series are the 10% larger (158000 GT-tons) sisterships Aqua (2025) and TBN4 (2026), as well as the 20% larger (172000 GT-tons) sisterships TBN5 (2027) and TBN6 (2028).

The vessel (IMO number 9823998) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311001127) and registered in Nassau .

Each NCL PRIMA class unit's building cost is EUR 730 million (USD 850M).

NCL's previous BREAKAWAY PLUS-Class boats were all built by Meyer Werft Germany (in Papenburg ).

Norwegian Viva cruise ship (NCL)

The design is based on 20 decks, 1646 staterooms, gross-tonnage/volume 142500 GT-tons, passenger capacity 3215 (double occupancy), 16 elevators (passenger lifts, including 2 dedicated to The Haven complex). The Haven complex (public areas and all the 107 staterooms) were designed by the Italian interior design company Lissoni & Partners (Piero Lissoni).

Like the sistership Prima, NCL Viva's hull artwork will be designed by the Italian graffiti artist Manuel Di Rita (aka Peeta).

History - construction and ownership

On February 16, 2017, the shipowner NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd) signed with Fincantieri an order for 4x NCL LEONARDO Class (renamed to "NCL PRIMA" in 2021) units for the NCL brand.

  • The newbuilds were scheduled for deliveries in 2022 through 2025 (one ship per year), with an option for two more units to be added to the order in the future. On July 12, 2018, NCLH ordered two more units (PRIMA PLUS series) currently scheduled for deliveries in 2027 and 2028.
  • The NCLH-Fincantieri deal was backed by CDP (Cassa Depositi e Prestiti SpA/1850-founded, Turino-based Italian investment bank) and SACE SpA (Servizi Assicurativi del Commercio Estero/1977-founded Italian Export Credit Agency).
  • All shipbuilding orders were signed by Frank Del Rio (NCLH's President and CEO) and Giuseppe Bono (Fincantieri SpA's CEO).

The vessel's name (Norwegian Viva) was officially revealed on January 11, 2022.

The NCL ship's namesake is the A-Rosa Cruises ' riverboat Arosa Viva (2010-built).

Like all units from this series, Norwegian Viva's shipbuilder is Fincantieri (Marghera Yard near Venice Italy ).

The vessel (Fincantieri Marghera yard/hull number 6299) has a powerplant based on 5x main Wartisla diesel engines - 3x model 8L46 (8-cylinder) and 2x model 12V46 (12-cylinder), plus 1x Caterpillar diesel generator (model 3516C HD) and 6x Alfa Laval auxiliary boilers (1x oil/gas fired plus 5x exhaust gas heated).

The propulsion system is diesel-electric and based on 3x bow thrusters (model Brunvoll FU115) and 2x aft thrusters (model ABB Azipod XO).

The registered shipowner is Leonardo Two Ltd (subsidiary of NCLH) while as ship manager is listed NCL Bahamas Ltd.

The vessel was launched/floated out from drydock on August 2, 2022. The ceremony was attended by Harry Sommer (NCLH's CEO and President), Luigi Matarazzo (Fincantieri's Merchant Shipping Division's Managing Director) and Frank Del Rio (NCLH's CEO and President).

NCL's Viva was officially delivered by Fincantieri Marghera to NCLH/shipowner on August 3, 2023. The delivery was postponed and originally scheduled for June 30th.

The ship left Fincantieri Maghera on May 5th and arrived at Fincantieri Trieste on May 7th, for final outfitting and painting. Next are planned the Adriatic Sea trials.

On June 23, 2023, David J. Herrera (NCL's President) announced the name of Viva ship's godfather - Luis Alfonso Rodriguez Lopez-Cepero (aka Luis Fonsi/1978-born Puerto Rican singer and songwriter). Luis Fonsi is best known for his hits "Despacito" (2017/featuring the rapper Daddy Yankee/Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez) and "Echame La Culpa" (2019/duet with Demi Lovato).

The ship's official christening ceremony was held on November 28th (2023) in PortMiami (Florida USA) . The naming event featured live performances by celebrity entertainers like Paulina Susana Rubio Dosamantes/Paulina Rubio (1971-born Mexican singer), Pedro Capo (1980-born Puerto Rican singer), Marcello Hernandez (1997-born American stand-up comedian/actor/writer). The special event was attended by David J. Herrera and Harry Sommer

Norwegian Viva's homeporting in Puerto Rico (San Juan) starts on December 15th.

Norwegian Viva review: What to expect on Norwegian Cruise Line's 2nd Prima Class ship

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

Norwegian Cruise Line 's Norwegian Viva takes the best of everything about NCL and wraps it up in a stylish package that offers great food, friendly service, compelling entertainment and modern, classy design. The ship, part of Norwegian's new Prima Class , is interesting in that, while some aspects of the ship experience have shrunk, others have expanded.

The vessel itself is smaller than ships in the line's previous class, and although it's family-friendly, it also houses a downsized version of the Splash Academy kids club, which lacks dedicated teen spaces. However, the ship has seen growth in the way of a larger onboard suite area with a better location and one of the fleet's largest go-kart tracks — something the Prima Class adopted from previous hardware.

Norwegian Viva is the second ship in Norwegian Cruise Line's Prima Class. There isn't much that differentiates Norwegian Viva from its slightly older sister, Norwegian Prima. Both offer a slightly smaller version of the cruise experience found on the line's Breakaway and Breakaway Plus Classes.

What sets the two ships apart are minor elements like art installations, one fewer onboard Starbucks location and added seating capacity at Indulge Food Hall . But perhaps the biggest differentiator is the entertainment, with the ship offering a version of the Broadway show "Beetlejuice."

viva cruise ncl

I sailed on a nine-night voyage when the ship was at roughly two-thirds of its capacity and was disappointed to note the ship sometimes felt crowded. The pools weren't large enough, it was difficult to snag reservations for go-karts and escape rooms, and some performance venues were standing room only.

I began to wonder, as my colleague did when he sailed Norwegian Prima , has the line made its newest ships too small ?

Here's a recap of everything you'll need to know before a voyage on Norwegian Viva, from food and entertainment to the types of cabins available, as well as what stood out and what you might want to avoid.

At 143,535 gross registered tons and carrying 3,099 passengers at double occupancy, Norwegian Viva is smaller than the last two classes of ships NCL rolled out, but don't make the mistake of thinking it's small.

With dozens of restaurants and bars, a theater, a comedy club, a dedicated rock 'n' roll venue, a virtual reality gaming center and a top-deck go-kart track , Norwegian has managed to pack a lot into a ship that, at times, feels equal parts spacious and crowded.

On my sailing, it was clear that the ship attracts lots of families — something that became obvious when teenagers regularly overran public areas. (The ship doesn't have a dedicated teen club, which means they hang out wherever they want. That's fine if they're well behaved; on my voyage, they weren't.)

Overall, it's a lively vessel with lots to do.

What I loved about Norwegian Viva

Indulge food hall.

viva cruise ncl

Indulge Food Hall was introduced on Norwegian Prima and makes a return appearance on Viva, and it quickly became my favorite dining venue.

The waiter-served food court experience at Indulge combines some of the best restaurant offerings from around the fleet so that cruisers can try a bit of everything. There's an abridged version of Q Texas Smokehouse, serving pulled pork sandwiches a la Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss. There's also a food truck that serves small plates similar to what you can order at Bayamo on Norwegian Escape. I'm a big fan of the Indian dishes from Tamara.

Norwegian Prima features a Starbucks at Indulge, but the food hall concept proved so popular that the line removed the coffee shop on Viva to make room for more tables.

After you seat yourself, you place your order via a touchscreen, and the food arrives in a few minutes.

The best part is that the food is free. That's particularly notable for a line like Norwegian, which is notorious for its nickel-and-diming. Not only does Indulge Food Hall provide an additional complimentary food option, but some of the food available there comes with a fee at the corresponding stand-alone restaurants (Q and Bayamo, for example) on other ships.

Solo cabins and lounge

viva cruise ncl

Like many of the vessels that came before it, Norwegian Viva includes studio cabins for one — something the line has worked to improve since its first iteration on Norwegian Epic in 2010. What's special about Viva's version is that they feel just as upscale as the rest of the ship's cabins.

The neutral color palette is worlds away from the stark white with green and purple hues that punctuate previous versions. And that aesthetic carries through to the Studio Lounge, a space exclusive to passengers booked in studio cabins.

The ship has 73 staterooms for solos, each coming in at 93 square feet of space. They're small but comfortable and thoughtfully furnished, offering full-size beds, desk/vanity space and open-concept closets. Bathrooms have no main doors because why would you need privacy if you're traveling alone?

viva cruise ncl

Norwegian Viva's Penrose Atrium on Deck 6 is lighter, brighter and has a more open feeling than some of the atriums on ships in Norwegian's other classes. It feels like the ceilings aren't as low, and the space lacks the dark colors that can make other atriums induce a feeling of claustrophobia. It's a much more pleasant (albeit louder) space than on some of Norwegian's previous vessels.

Besides a peaceful white, tan and green color scheme, the space, which rises three decks, has comfortable seating — try the felt loungers — and tables. There's also a central banquette on Deck 6, and a glass light fixture evokes a sky filled with midcentury modern stars. Sprinkled throughout the area are the ship's whiskey bar, a stand-alone Starbucks counter, a few shops and desks for Wi-Fi assistance, guest services and shore excursions.

Escape rooms

viva cruise ncl

One of the highlights of more recent NCL ships is Galaxy Pavilion, and there's one on Norwegian Viva. In addition to a slew of added-fee virtual reality games, it also has two upcharge escape rooms that accommodate up to six people who are OK with being locked in for 45 minutes while hunting for clues that allow them to escape.

A group of friends and I chose a magic-themed experience that had us trying to find a missing magician. Although the crew member managing the experience said we did everything correctly, an equipment glitch prevented us from actually succeeding, which was a shame but not completely unexpected on a brand-new vessel still working out the kinks.

Ultimately, it's a fun activity to do with friends or family.

viva cruise ncl

For cruisers who like to stay connected on vacation, the onboard Wi-Fi situation is often a source of stress. Will the connection be solid? Will you be able to post, stream and check e-mail or attend a Zoom meeting?

On Viva, I had a Wi-Fi plan, powered by Starlink, that allowed streaming for two devices for the duration of my voyage. I'm happy to report that the connection was great. It was my first time on a ship where I wasn't constantly disconnected, and the service was solid for everything from FaceTime calls to watching Netflix.

Prices are steep, though. You can activate one device for general web browsing, checking emails and messaging for $29.99 per day. To purchase a streaming and VPN package for one device, it's $39.99 per day. A second device can be added for $15.99 per day or $25.99 per day, respectively. Four-device packages are also available, but rates are not posted. Prices are subject to change by itinerary.

What I didn't love about Norwegian Viva

Allocation of space.

viva cruise ncl

I love that Norwegian has tried to outfit its ships with more outdoor spaces that don't necessarily involve pools and waterslides, but I'm beginning to wonder if the latter have suffered as a result.

The experiment began on Norwegian Breakaway in 2012 with The Waterfront, an outdoor promenade space that connects to several of the vessel's restaurants for alfresco dining. The concept carries over to Prima Class ships in the form of Oceanwalk, a promenade that fully rings Deck 8. As passengers stroll by, they'll find pools, loungers, art installations, dining alcoves and a bar overlooking the wake.

However, some of the areas — particularly those allocated for outdoor dining — seemed underutilized. Meanwhile, the ship's three small pools were almost always crowded, especially on sea days. My sailing was only two-thirds full; that doesn't bode well for times when the vessel is sold out.

Some of the more in-demand indoor areas are also insufficiently sized. Popular rock club Syd Norman's Pour House is generally standing room only. If you don't show up 30 minutes before showtime, you might not get in. The first time I tried to check out a show there, I was met by crowds spilling out of both entrances.

The ship's Observation Lounge also seems too small at times. This was particularly true on the day we sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar. There wasn't a single unoccupied table; I circled for 20 minutes to pounce on a table that someone had just vacated.

viva cruise ncl

Splash Academy, Norwegian's kids club, seems like an afterthought on Norwegian Viva. Instead of dedicated spaces for each age group, the facilities lump all children, ages 6 months to 17 years, into just two rooms. Youth counselors organize age-appropriate activities for the 3- to 12-year-old set (think: dance parties, arts and crafts and scavenger hunts), but they still share the same space, which feels inappropriate.

Guppies, which normally caters to kids from 6 months to 2 years old, has no set space on board. Toys are laid out for use by children and their parents when the two existing rooms are not in use.

The ship takes a similar tack with tweens and teens. Entourage, the teen club, has no specific home on Norwegian Viva. Although activities are scheduled for ages 13 to 17, they take place all over the ship. On my sailing, teens often crowded — loudly — into public areas like Starbucks or took to hanging out in stairwells, which created a nuisance for some passengers.

viva cruise ncl

I understand that any new ship takes a few days to figure out, but some of the layout on Norwegian Viva still doesn't make sense to me, even after nine days on board.

Some areas aren't symmetrical, so don't be surprised if you overshoot your destination if you're walking on the wrong side of the ship. (I'm talking about you, Le Bistro.) Entrances to the Oceanwalk outdoor promenade area are plentiful but also hard to find in certain areas.

Furthermore, the casino is like a maze. Don't feel bad if you find yourself at a dead end the first time you pass through; it happens to most of us. If you're trying to make your way to Deck 18 from the front of the ship, you'll have to head aft and then make your way up — likely by walking partway through the buffet, which is awkward (and frustrating if you're fighting crowds during peak times).

viva cruise ncl

Then there are the traffic flow issues. It's difficult to maneuver your way around the seating area by Starbucks in Deck 7's atrium, and because there's no straightforward way across it, you can forget about moving from one side of the atrium to the other without walking all the way around.

Another hot mess is the corridor that runs along Deck 8 aft on the starboard side. It feels narrow, and it travels right through The Local, a 24-hour eatery that serves free pub grub and is, strangely, split into two sections. When trying to find The Local, I unwittingly walked right through without realizing it. I ended up all the way aft at Indulge Food Hall before turning around and doubling back. Several others made the same mistake, which caused congestion in the space.

viva cruise ncl

If you're someone who craves quiet time to read, play cards or just relax, Norwegian Viva is not your ship. There is no onboard card room, library or otherwise serene space. (Books are available to read on your electronic devices via the Libby app, which is neat, but it's not a substitute for a library.)

Starbucks, found in the atrium, is out in the open. Even after hours, you'll run into blasting music, teens being raucous and the sounds of crew members vacuuming. I also tried the Observation Lounge on Deck 17 forward, but I found teenagers holding court, families loudly playing board games and other noises that added to a cacophony so intense I couldn't focus.

viva cruise ncl

Ultimately, I resorted to staying in my cabin when I needed some quiet time, but I had a connecting room, and I could hear almost every word spoken by the family on the other side. I was also wakened by the sounds of slamming doors, the movement of balcony furniture and even coughing. Several fellow passengers who didn't have connecting rooms also said noise was an issue for them.

Even places like the spa, which should have been quiet, lacked soundproofing. When I walked into my treatment room for a massage, I heard what sounded like bubbling water. I assumed it was some sort of sound machine, but when I asked the therapist, she said it was the plumbing from the men's locker room. It was kind of soothing until people flushed the toilets, at which point my moments of calm were sidelined by loud whooshing noises.

And minus 100 points to whoever decided the fitness center's treadmills would be well placed directly over the thermal suite's heated loungers.

Missing fish

viva cruise ncl

Fans of Norwegian Cruise Line will likely know all about the fish found on the carpet in cabin corridors on the line's ships. If you're lost, just look at which way the fish are swimming; they always point toward the front.

I was sad to discover the fish don't appear on Norwegian Viva. Instead, they have been replaced by more neutral carpeting with triangles that point the way. It's a minor change, but it's still disappointing because it was a whimsical way in which NCL set itself apart from other cruise lines.

Norwegian Viva cabins and suites

viva cruise ncl

Norwegian Viva's cabins consist of all the standard options: inside (no windows), outside or ocean view (with a window), balcony (a sliding-glass door and outdoor balcony space) and suites.

There are other options, too, including studio cabins for solo travelers and extra-fancy rooms in The Haven, the ship's exclusive suite enclave, which affords booked passengers access to a private restaurant, bar, lounge, pool and sun deck, hot tubs and concierge services.

All basic rooms are outfitted with two twin beds that combine to form a queen (except studios, which have one static full-size bed); a vanity and desk area with a mirror, electrical outlets and a hair dryer; closet and drawer space; and an interactive TV that shows live shows, movies (many free but some for a fee), ship channels and your onboard account. A small wall-mounted touchscreen pad near the door controls the temperature and allows you to activate "do not disturb" and "make up room" options.

viva cruise ncl

Standard bathrooms are shower-only with doors rather than curtains. They also include a toilet, a sink, storage space for toiletry items, wall-mounted hand soap by the sink and body wash and conditioning shampoo in the shower.

Rooms are serviced only once per day, but your room steward is available by phone if you need extras like fresh towels or more hangers. They will deliver a paper copy of the daily schedule to your room each evening and leave it in the mailbox outside your door.

viva cruise ncl

My cabin was the standard balcony variety. In addition to the amenities mentioned above, it offered a sofa across from the vanity, as well as a minifridge. What truly impressed me about my digs were the astronomically comfortable mattress, the number of hooks for hanging items throughout the cabin, the bright lighting (including an illuminated makeup mirror at the vanity), the number of electrical outlets and the amount of storage space, both in the closet and in the bathroom.

viva cruise ncl

What irritated me were the connecting door, thanks to the lack of soundproofing and the whistling I heard any time my neighbors left their balcony door open; the wire drawers in the closet, which are too small and too open to be useful; the absence of a separate light switch for an exposed portion of the closet that was illuminated any time I turned on the main cabin lights; and the lack of a bed skirt, which meant my luggage was visible for the entire voyage because I stored it under the bed.

The ship has 44 accessible staterooms across inside, outside, balcony and The Haven categories. They offer such accommodations as additional square footage, wider doorways, and shower stools and toilet seat risers in the bathrooms.

Norwegian Viva restaurants and bars

viva cruise ncl

Norwegian Viva houses more than a dozen places to eat and also more than a dozen bars, so there are plenty of choices for even the pickiest of palates.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of dining on this ship is that you don't have to shell out additional funds to have truly superb meals. The food you'll find in the two main dining rooms, the 24-hour pub and the food hall is pretty darn tasty — and it won't cost you an extra cent.

If you do want to try a few extra-fee eateries, take advantage of Norwegian's Free at Sea offerings, which allow you to choose from several perks, including complimentary dining at restaurants that usually cost extra.

Norwegian Viva restaurants

viva cruise ncl

The Commodore Room and Hudson's are the ship's two complimentary main dining rooms on decks 6 and 7 aft, respectively. The menu changes daily and is the same at both venues. I only ate dinner at Hudson's once on my voyage, but I was so impressed with the pad thai that I would have asked for seconds if I hadn't been so full.

Both dining rooms are open nightly. Hudson's operates from 5 to 9 p.m., and the Commodore Room serves patrons from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dining is open seating, meaning you can show up to eat at any time you'd like and sit with whom you'd prefer.

viva cruise ncl

Indulge Food Hall, only found on Norwegian's Prima Class ships, offers a food court-style experience where you seat yourself and select free items from a touchscreen menu, similar to an iPad. Waiters will bring each dish as you order it.

The portions tend to be small, so you can try multiple dishes. It's common for passengers to order a couple of items, eat them and then order a couple more. I highly recommend the guacamole as a starter and something from the Tamara Indian menu, followed by a pulled pork sandwich from Q Texas Smokehouse if you have room left.

Indulge, found on Deck 8 aft, is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with different menus for each meal.

viva cruise ncl

The Local, located just before Indulge on Deck 8, is oddly split into two sections: one with a bar and alcove seating and another with tables where you can sit and order food. Both areas have big-screen TVs where you can watch sporting events. Separating the spaces and serving as a passageway between the two is a small vestibule with a few arcade games.

What's great about The Local is that it's open nearly 24 hours. (It closes between 3:30 and 5 a.m.) The food is complimentary, and it's tasty, typical pub grub like wings, fish 'n' chips, sliders, nachos and burgers, as well as lighter fare such as Caesar salads.

viva cruise ncl

Surfside Cafe and Grill is the ship's standard buffet venue, serving a variety of food from self-serve stations on Deck 17 midship. Because Norwegian Viva also has The Local and Indulge, the space dedicated to the traditional buffet is smaller than on other cruise ships. I didn't eat a single meal there because when I ventured inside it was so crowded that people could barely move. I elected for more civilized meals elsewhere.

If your stomach is rumbling a bit too much before dinner, the luxuriously appointed Observation Lounge on Deck 17 forward offers gratis between-meal snacks daily from 3 to 5 p.m.

viva cruise ncl

The Haven Restaurant functions as the free main dining room for passengers booked in The Haven suite complex. It's open daily to passengers with access, and it features a set menu for the entire sailing.

Free soft-serve machines can be found in the buffet and outside on Oceanwalk, near Indulge. Chocolate, vanilla and twist are offered, and the ice cream is vegan. The machines are not available 24 hours a day like they are on some cruise lines' ships. Norwegian Viva has neither a stand-alone ice cream shop nor a bakery, which was disappointing.

Added-fee food

On Norwegian Viva, dining can be a bit chaotic at peak times, so make reservations for any specialty restaurants you're considering — and do it on the first day so you're not left with the crummiest times.

viva cruise ncl

For French food, Le Bistro is your answer. This specialty restaurant on Deck 7 is as elegant as they come, featuring a bright atmosphere with light blue accents and high-end decor, including giant floor-to-ceiling crystal chandeliers that are stunning. There's no dress code to dine at Le Bistro, but you might want to embrace the experience by making an effort.

I'm generally not a fan of French cuisine, so I played it safe and went with French onion soup and Dover sole, both of which were delicious.

viva cruise ncl

Cagney's Steakhouse is — you guessed it — Norwegian Viva's steakhouse on Deck 6 aft. It provides a menu of items like shrimp, tuna tartare, oysters Rockefeller, soups, salads, steaks, fish and sides.

I went with a crabcake, a beefsteak tomato with onions and balsamic vinaigrette, and a petite (5-ounce) filet mignon with a side of truffle fries. If you're someone who doesn't eat meat, fish or seafood, you might consider dining elsewhere.

viva cruise ncl

Ever a fan of carbohydrates, I enjoyed Italian-influenced Onda tremendously. It was a nice night as we sailed along Italy's Amalfi Coast, so my group asked for a table outside, along Oceanwalk on Deck 8, which was absolutely delightful with the city lights as a backdrop and a warm breeze reminding us that we were moving.

We started with a couple of sharable — and absolutely to-die-for — pizzas and a veggie calzone. Then, I moved on to burrata, which was an absolute masterpiece, followed by ricotta and spinach mezzelune (similar to ravioli).

Although the meal was great, the service was a bit on the slow side. It took about three hours from start to finish, and we waited nearly 30 minutes for someone to take our order once we were seated.

viva cruise ncl

Craving seafood? There's a restaurant for that, too: Palomar on Deck 17 mid. The entrance near the pool area was closed on my sailing, forcing passengers to fight through the buffet to reach the main entrance. That experience did not set the tone for the beginning of such an upscale meal.

Like Cagney's, Palomar offers a mix of seafood and meats like steak and lamb chops, but it's heavier on the seafood end. Choose from oysters, grilled jumbo prawns, grilled octopus and several salads for appetizers. Mains include sea scallops, sea bass, filet mignon, New York strip and a whole grilled lobster, with sides such as potatoes, jasmine rice and carrots. I opted for sole (again), preceded by a golden beet salad with cheese and accompanied by asparagus.

Although Palomar features vegetable-based sides and appetizers, vegetarians and vegans will not find suitable mains on the menu.

viva cruise ncl

Food Republic, across from Palomar on Deck 17, is my favorite of NCL's alternative restaurants. In my opinion, it's also one of the most underrated.

When I ate there near the end of my voyage, it was nearly empty at 7:30 p.m. — a prime dining time. It seems the issue is that cruisers don't quite understand what the venue offers. People might also confuse it with Indulge Food Hall, which offers similar fare and a similar ordering system but for zero extra cost.

Food Republic is a street food restaurant that leans heavily Asian. You'll be seated when you arrive, and you order from a touchpad. Items are priced a la carte and will be made to order, with each delivered when ready, rather than all at once.

If you have a dining package, you can select any four food items, including desserts. Items are served as small plates. I didn't finish everything and still left absolutely stuffed. The pork belly bao buns and edamame are excellent.

viva cruise ncl

On the flip side, my least favorite restaurant is Los Lobos, a for-fee Mexican eatery on Deck 8, near The Local. I'm a huge fan of Mexican cuisine, but when I ate at Los Lobos on fleetmate Norwegian Encore about a month prior, the service was slow, and the food was mediocre. With that in mind, I was skeptical about eating there on Viva.

I dined at Lobos twice during my voyage. The first time was a pleasant surprise, with the tableside guacamole, tortilla soup and chicken enchiladas de mole serving as highlights.

The second time, however, both the service and the food were lacking. Our servers seemed confused when my vegetarian dinner companion asked about meat-free options, and when my chicken tacos arrived, they looked gross — mushy and with brown avocado. The one saving grace was the wonderful strawberry frozen margarita I had.

viva cruise ncl

For passengers in the mood for Asian cuisine, Nama sushi and Hasuki teppanyaki on Deck 7 aft are both solid options. The former offers for-fee a la carte sushi and sashimi, and the latter features a traditional experience where diners sit around a grill to watch a chef cook, perform tricks and tell cheesy jokes.

If you're feeling more like a night in, you can order room service by hitting the dedicated button on your cabin phone. From 10 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., the menu consists of choices like chicken soup, a selection of salads, fruit and cheese plates, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, pizza, spaghetti, flank steak, roasted chicken, tilapia and a handful of desserts. For the kids, there are items like macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and chicken fingers.

Room service is no longer free on Norwegian Cruise Line ships, and a $9.95 surcharge applies to all deliveries, along with a 20% delivery charge (note this is not a tip). Order enough items to make it worth the cost. Although tipping is not expected, it's nice to offer a couple of dollars to the crew member who delivers your meal.

Breakfast — including continental options — is offered from 6:30 to 10 a.m. for $4.95, plus a 20% delivery charge.

viva cruise ncl

When I placed a late-night order for an 11-inch pizza, a cheese plate and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, it cost me $11.94, and it took an hour and 13 minutes to arrive. The pizza was lukewarm with way too much garlic, and the sandwich bread was stale.

However, when I ordered room service breakfast one morning, it arrived five minutes ahead of the earliest delivery time I selected, and the French toast was tasty.

Norwegian Viva bars

viva cruise ncl

Although it's not a bar where you can purchase alcohol, Starbucks was my favorite haunt on board Norwegian Viva. Found in the atrium on Deck 7, it's a nice central meeting spot that took care of my daily caffeine fix.

Unfortunately, coffee there isn't covered by the basic alcohol package that's included with most fares. (This is something I'll never understand, given that it costs less than just about any alcohol except beer. The same is true for bottled water, which also isn't included.) On the bright side, if you have a Wi-Fi package and funds preloaded onto your Starbucks app, you can pay that way and earn stars.

viva cruise ncl

One deck down, directly under Starbucks, is the Whiskey Bar. There, passengers can find a selection of whiskeys. I prefer sweet drinks, so I went with peanut butter whiskey and club soda. Be sure to say hello to Craig — one of the best bartenders I've ever had on a ship — who warned me that adding simple syrup to the mix would make it too sweet. I decided to trust him, and I'm glad I did.

viva cruise ncl

The Metropolitan Bar on Deck 7, which often hosts live music, hardly ever seemed crowded. That's unfortunate because the concept is unique in that it recycles leftover galley items into drink ingredients and garnishes so they don't go to waste.

The menu comprises 11 beverages created with watermelon rind cordial, spent coffee ground cordial, banana peel syrup and pineapple peel. I tested the Cucumber Cool — vodka, elderflower liqueur, lime juice and cucumber pulp cordial — and loved it. On the wall across from the bar is a cool electronic art installation that senses when people pass by.

viva cruise ncl

If you find yourself meandering on Deck 8's Oceanwalk, you might consider stopping at Soleil Bar, found all the way aft overlooking the wake. It's a great space, but it lacks shade in a big way. I suppose that means its name is fitting, but it can be brutal to sit there in warm-weather destinations. On my Italy sailing, I was drenched in sweat within five minutes of arriving.

Should you decide you'd rather drink indoors and out of the sun, make your way to the nearby Luna Bar, located inside Indulge Food Hall.

viva cruise ncl

The upscale Belvedere Bar is a great place to grab a pre-dinner drink if you're dining at the nearby Commodore Room, and the Penrose Bar serves as a central watering hole for anyone taking in live music or participating in activities on Deck 6 of the Penrose Atrium. There's also a bar in the casino and one by the pool (Waves Pool Bar).

viva cruise ncl

Looking for a place to hang out with a drink and your thoughts? Check out the Humidor Cigar Lounge, which is outfitted with couches, chairs and a selection of cigars; the Observation Lounge, which has a bar, afternoon snacks and sweeping views; or the Studio Lounge or Haven Lounge if you're booked in a cabin that grants you access to either one.

Norwegian Viva entertainment

viva cruise ncl

Norwegian Viva's onboard diversions are varied and interesting. From Broadway-caliber shows and live music to dance parties, bingo, trivia, video games, slides and games like "Deal or No Deal," there's a lot that graces the Freestyle Daily, Norwegian Viva's daily schedule of activities.

You can certainly have fun without paying more, but many of the ship's most noteworthy pastimes come with a price tag. If trying the newest and flashiest amenities is important to you, build some extra funds into your vacation budget.

Norwegian Viva activities

viva cruise ncl

Free daily activities include trivia, murder mysteries, balloon twisting seminars, dance classes and pool games and competitions (such as the Mr. Sexy Legs contest). You'll also find sports equipment — cornhole boards, Ping-Pong paddles and the like — laid out on the deck for passenger use.

The Splash Academy is free for kids ages 3 to 17. As mentioned earlier, the two-room playroom on Deck 15 is smaller than it should be and does not include a teen club. Teen activities take place around the ship. Youth staff set out toys for babies and toddlers to enjoy with their parents or caregivers at select times.

viva cruise ncl

Norwegian Viva has three pools that are open to everyone: a main pool on Deck 17 (with two hot tubs) and two infinity pools on either side of Deck 8's Oceanwalk area. All of them felt small for the size of the ship, particularly on sea days. All pools have accessible lifts, but none of the hot tubs do.

A kids splash area is located on Deck 18, near the entrance to The Wave waterslide. Two dry slides — The Drop and The Rush — spiral 10 decks down the side of the ship. The entrance for those is also on Deck 18. All slides are complimentary.

viva cruise ncl

The Haven suite complex also has a private wake-facing pool and hot tubs on decks 16 and 17 for passengers booked in The Haven suite enclave.

NCL is notorious for charging extra for everything from dining to activities, and Norwegian Viva is no exception. Although nightly entertainment is free, many of the best daytime activities come with an additional price tag.

viva cruise ncl

Many of the ship's extra-fee attractions can be found on upper decks 17 and 18. Here, you'll find the adults-only Vibe Beach Club on Deck 17. The line charges a pretty penny for access to this dedicated area with hot tubs, sun loungers and a bar. (But don't be fooled; just because it's exclusive doesn't mean it's private. Other passengers can look right into the space from Deck 18.)

Up on Deck 18 is the Tee Time miniature golf course. Norwegian became the first cruise line to charge for mini-golf — free on all other ships that have it — when it launched its Prima Class vessels. A single round at Tee Time on the course's nine holes costs $10 per person, and teams can accommodate up to six people.

viva cruise ncl

When you swipe your card, a machine dispenses a physical ball (no fun colors, which is disappointing) with an electronic component tied to your name. When you place your ball in the designated starting point on each green, it recognizes who you are. (It would be super fun to have a few drinks before playing a round during which you swap balls with your friends.)

Digital screens keep score for everyone, and arbitrary points are awarded for feats my teammates and I never did figure out. The sensors are ultra-sensitive; if you move your ball, even to position it a club's head away from the wall, it could count as a stroke.

Viva's version was an interesting and sometimes infuriating way to play. Ultimately, I prefer regular mini-golf. This is a prime example of, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

viva cruise ncl

Another strange flex on Prima Class ships is The Bull's Eye, a suite of semi-private areas that groups of up to six people can rent to play darts for 50 minutes for $20 per person. The underwhelming game area was not crowded when I passed through on my way to Tee Time, which shares the same space.

viva cruise ncl

Also on Deck 18 is the entrance to Viva Speedway, the ship's go-kart track. From there, you can sign up to drive, check in for your reservation or head up one deck to grab a drink at the Viva Speedway Bar so you have something to sip on as you watch drivers zoom past.

It's fun to experience the go-karts once, but for me, they aren't much of a thrill after the first time. (For safety reasons, Norwegian has dampened the maximum speed on them, so they're a bit on the slow side.)

viva cruise ncl

The virtual reality Galaxy Pavilion on Deck 17 forward is an attraction carried over from NCL's Breakaway Plus Class ships. It's home to a selection of video games, VR experiences and two escape rooms. Games can be played a la carte, and the escape rooms, which cost $15 per person, put groups of up to six people into a locked room for 45 minutes or until they solve clues needed to allow for their escape.

viva cruise ncl

Looking for something free to do on Deck 18? Check out The Stadium, a large alcove of games like table shuffleboard, Ping-Pong, Foosball and beer pong — but without the beer. You'll also find a pickleball court, as well as Subsoccer tables that allow you to play soccer against a single opponent while seated and looking down through a clear table.

The two-level Mandara Spa is also nearby, with an entrance on Deck 16. In addition to for-fee treatments (massages, manicures, pedicures), the ship offers a gorgeous and expanded thermal suite that has salt and steam rooms, a sauna, a massive split thalassotherapy pool, an ice room, heated tile loungers and more. Thermal suite passes were $339 per person for nine-day access.

The state-of-the-art fitness center features yoga equipment, free weights and TechnoGym machines like bikes, ellipticals, rowers and treadmills. Gym use is free, but some exercise classes cost extra.

You can spend or possibly win money at the Deck 6 casino or at bingo games hosted throughout the cruise.

Note that the ship does not have laser tag or a basketball court, as do other NCL ships.

Norwegian Viva shows

viva cruise ncl

Two of Norwegian Viva's top shows weren't ready when I sailed on the ship's inaugural sailing. Broadway show "Beetlejuice" was in tech rehearsals at the time, and an onboard rendition of the popular game show "Press Your Luck" also hadn't debuted.

Ken Davis, who produces the entertainment for Norwegian's new-builds, told me in an exclusive interview that "Beetlejuice" brings with it the original creative team from the show's run on Broadway. That includes the associate director, as well as the original costume designers and choreographers.

They've had to adapt the show to fit on the Viva Theater's smaller stage, of course, but that has allowed the team the flexibility to tweak things they didn't like about the original version. So, when it debuts — offering two shows on each of two nights during a typical voyage for four total performances — the show promises to be even better than the original.

"Icons" is an original show featuring dancers and singers who perform tunes by iconic musical artists. It runs at least once per seven-night voyage, with two show times in the Viva Theater.

On my cruise, the ship offered a couple of unpolished performances, and what I saw was incredibly lackluster. The show features six talented singers in sparkly outfits belting out songs from vocal superstars like Bruno Mars, Celine Dion, Elton John and Lady Gaga. The result was stale and outdated, lacking the modern flair and polish of most new-ship shows.

In a one-on-one interview, Julie Valeriote, Norwegian's director of entertainment operations, divulged that the show will eventually involve a different stage layout with a thrust to connect the performers more closely with their audience, who will be seated at tables throughout the space.

What's interesting about the Viva Theater & Club is that the venue can transform from an auditorium-style setup to one where the seats are partially condensed or fully tucked away like bleachers, converting the venue into a club with a dance floor. Part of the reason "Press Your Luck" and "Icons" weren't fully ready is because the stage and seating layouts couldn't be changed while "Beetlejuice" was in tech.

Syd Norman's Pour House, which debuted on Norwegian Breakaway in 2018 and offers tribute performances by a fantastic band, also returns on Norwegian Viva. Syd Norman, a fictional character whose face appears on the lounge's logo, draws from the personas of club owners who found success during rock 'n' roll's heyday.

Inside, you'll find a small stage, a bar, walls adorned with rock memorabilia and a few tables with intentionally mismatched chairs and stools. In fact, seating is in such short supply that if you don't get to the club at least 30 minutes prior to showtime, you'll be standing. The place is so popular that if you don't arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes ahead of time, you won't even be able to get through the doors.

The performances are out of this world, headlined by a cast of four phenomenal singers who gave me goosebumps. The show you truly won't want to miss is "Rumours," where the quartet jams out to every track from Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" album, complete with interludes highlighting some of the band's real-life struggles. Even if you're not a huge Fleetwood Mac fan, you should still check out the show or any of the quartet's other performances.

viva cruise ncl

Other nighttime events include club dance parties in both the main theater and Syd Norman's, comedy in the main theater and dedicated comedy venue Improv at Sea, and rotating acts that stay on board for a few sailings. On my voyage, I saw violinist Christopher Watkins, who plays well-known songs on a violin adorned with more than 1,000 Swarovski crystals.

Every evening, you'll also find plenty of live music throughout the ship. Check the Freestyle Daily or the NCL app for details.

Norwegian Viva itineraries and pricing

viva cruise ncl

Norwegian Viva will split its time between Lisbon, Portugal, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, both of which will serve as seasonal home ports for the ship.

The vessel will spend the winter months (roughly mid-November through mid-April) offering seven-night Caribbean voyages from San Juan. The rest of the year, it will be based in Lisbon, from which it will conduct Mediterranean and Greek Isles itineraries that range from nine to 11 nights. It will also sail a handful of voyages from Rome and Athens, Greece.

Prices for seven-night Caribbean voyages in early 2024 start at $139 per person, per night for an inside cabin. Fares for the Mediterranean cruises in autumn 2024 start from $155 per person, per night for an inside cabin.

Note: Prices were accurate at the time of publication and are subject to change without notice.

What to know before you go

Required documents.

viva cruise ncl

If you're a U.S. citizen departing on a Norwegian Viva cruise in Europe, you must have a passport for travel. For round-trip sailings from San Juan, you can use your original birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license. However, we recommend passports in all situations. If you're using a passport, it must have a least six months' validity from the day your voyage ends.

Norwegian Viva adds automatic surcharges of $20 to $25 per person , per day to final bills, depending on your cabin category. Passengers can tweak the amount up or down at the guest services desk before the final morning of the sailing, but they will be required to fill out a form. A 20% gratuity is also tacked onto bar, spa and specialty restaurant purchases.

viva cruise ncl

Most Norwegian bookings include basic ship Wi-Fi in the price of the fares. Cruisers who don't have it included or passengers who want to upgrade to a streaming package will have to pay. The cost varies by ship and itinerary, but it's generally costly, ranging from roughly $30 to $35 per person, per day, depending on your needs. You could save a few dollars by booking a Wi-Fi package before you embark.

Carry-on drinks policy

Passengers are allowed to bring their own bottles of wine on Norwegian Viva, but they'll be charged a corkage fee of $15 per bottle. Passengers are not allowed to bring nonalcoholic beverages on board.

Smoking policy

Norwegian Viva provides special areas for smokers to light up cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes. They include the casino, the Humidor Cigar Lounge (cigars only) and a covered spot on Deck 18.

viva cruise ncl

Norwegian Viva doesn't offer self-service laundry facilities . Cruisers can, instead, pay an extra fee for send-out laundry or dry-cleaning services. Housekeeping will return your clothes in a day or so unless you pay extra for expedited services.

Sometimes, the ship offers laundry deals, allowing passengers to fill a bag with as many clothes as they can fit for a set price. Members of certain tiers of the line's Latitudes loyalty program receive free or discounted laundry services.

Electrical outlets

viva cruise ncl

Cabins on Norwegian Viva are equipped with both North American-style 110-volt outlets and European-style 220-volt outlets, as well as USB ports. In my room, there was one USB port on each of the two bedside reading lamps. Near the vanity, there were also three North American outlets, one European-style outlet, one USB outlet and one USB-C outlet.

Norwegian Viva's onboard currency is the U.S. dollar. Passengers can withdraw cash from onboard ATMs but will pay a hefty surcharge.

The ship is cashless, so you'll use your room keycard like a charge card to make purchases, which are then charged to your onboard account.

Drinking age

viva cruise ncl

The drinking age on Norwegian Viva is 21. If their parents are sailing, passengers 18 to 20 years old can drink beer and wine in international waters with a signed waiver.

Norwegian Cruise Line has no formal nights . "Freestyle" cruising, a term the line coined, means you can wear just about anything wherever and whenever you'd like.

Daytime attire generally consists of T-shirts and jeans or shorts. At dinnertime, cruisers might choose to put on khakis with collared shirts or sundresses; it's usually casual, though. Playing dress-up is purely optional.

Bottom line

viva cruise ncl

Although passengers will pay extra for many things on Norwegian Viva, and some of the ship's public spaces aren't large enough to accommodate demand, the vessel is still a wonderful second iteration of the line's Prima Class.

The artwork is fun, the food is largely delicious and with "Beetlejuice" and Syd Norman's "Rumours" headlining the entertainment, passengers will never be bored day or night.

Making a grand debut in Europe today, Norwegian Viva departed for its first spectacular nine-day journey through the Mediterranean, taking guests from Venice (Trieste), Italy to Lisbon, Portugal with stops in some of Europe's most incredible seaside destinations including Salerno, off Italy's picturesque Amalfi Coast; Cannes along France's stunning Cote d'Azur; and Ibiza, Spain in the Balearic Islands, among other superb destinations. Norwegian Viva will sail a selection of bucket-list worthy Greek Isles and Mediterranean voyages through November, before homeporting in San Juan, Puerto Rico in December for a season in the Caribbean.

"This summer, our guests will have the opportunity to explore Europe aboard our newest magnificent vessel, Norwegian Viva, while enjoying its well-appointed spacious design, elevated experiences, expansive culinary offerings and signature Norwegian Cruise Line hospitality provided by the best crew in the industry," said David J. Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.  "Norwegian Viva's tagline is 'Live it Up,' and I have no doubt our guests will be doing just that while they cruise to some of the liveliest cities in Europe and the Caribbean during the ship's inaugural season."

Mirroring the design of the award-winning sister ship Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva features standout onboard experiences including the Viva Speedway—the three-level racetrack; Indulge Food Hall, an upscale food market exhibiting 11 unique eateries; the fastest slides at sea, The Drop and Rush; and NCL's industry-exclusive sustainable cocktail bar, the Metropolitan Bar.

Norwegian Viva's upscale and spacious design is elevated by an expansive array of artwork across the ship, including The Concourse, a multi-million-dollar outdoor sculpture garden, and a dynamic, interactive 52-foot-wide art piece by contemporary British digital artist Dominic Harris. Exclusively created for Norwegian Viva, Harris' "Every Wing Has a Silver Lining" digital art piece is on display at Metropolitan Bar and dynamically responds throughout the day to passing movement, creating engagement with the viewer.  Norwegian Viva also features a world-class entertainment lineup, headlined by the side-splitting Tony Award ® -nominated comedy "Beetlejuice The Musical" and the iconic game show "Press Your Luck LIVE," an immersive experience where the audience participates to win incredible grand prizes.

Following the ship's maiden voyage, Norwegian Viva will sail a series of Mediterranean  and  Greek Isles  itineraries, before its official Christening ceremony in Miami on Nov. 28, 2023.  Luis Fonsi, Latin GRAMMY ®  award-winning artist and godfather to Norwegian Viva,  will attend the celebration to officially name the ship and will be joined by The Queen of Latin Pop, Paulina Rubio; "Saturday Night Live" cast member and Miami-native Marcello Hernandez; and singer Pedro Capó. The ship will homeport in San Juan, Puerto Rico for a season of Caribbean voyages from December 2023 through March 2024 with calls to Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. John's, Antigua; Bridgetown, Barbados; Castries, St. Lucia; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; and St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

In May 2024, Norwegian Viva will return to Europe, where its Mediterranean itineraries offer an unmatched opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Europe. With an average of 10.5 hours in port, travelers will have more time to explore with fewer days at sea. Guests can unpack once, all while enjoying the ease and comfort of their world-class travel accommodations and the ability to wake up in a new destination as the ship transports them from one spectacular European city to another.

Norwegian Viva - Everything Onboard NCL's Newest Cruise Ship

Harr Travel, Norwegian Viva, NCL, Prima Class, Norwegian Cruise Line

NCL's newest ship, the stunning Norwegian Viva, is now cruising through the Caribbean, and we could not be more excited here at Harr Travel. We have had the pleasure of setting foot onboard this beautiful vessel, sailing on her out of the shipyard in Italy, as well as onboard one of her first Caribbean sailings out of Miami.

It is safe to say that Norwegian has once again outdone themselves with the design and venues onboard Viva. From the incredible entertainment, to the elevated complimentary dining options, to the heart-racing activities, Viva is a standout in the Norwegian fleet

Viva is the second of the six Prima class ships, and weighs in at over 143,000 gross registered tons. She has the ability to hold up to 3950 guests, and with so many activities, lounge spaces, and fun zones, there is plenty of room onboard for passengers to spread out and enjoy this magnificent ship. Whether you are looking to enjoy a cocktail in the lounge, zip down the waterslide, or tear up the go kart speedway, there are endless opportunities for entertainment and fun onboard.

Specialty Dining

Hasuki, Norwegian Viva, NCL, Norwegian Cruise Line, Prima Class

CAGNEY’S STEAKHOUSE | Cagney's is a Norwegian staple, and is one of the most popular specialty restaurant onboard that features delicious steakhouse options with an open kitchen concept! Reservations are highly recommended for Cagney's, and at Harr Travel, we advise pre-booking as soon as they become available in the weeks leading up to your cruise.

HASUKI | As one of the specialty restaurants that books up the quickest, we highly recommend making reservations at Hasuki the moment they become available. This is a classic teppanyaki grill with shared seating all around the teppanyaki tables, although on Viva, there are a handful of grill tables that seat just 2, perfect for a romantic date night! They have a wide variety of options from fried rice, to steak, scallops, and shrimp; everything needed to create a delicious grilled-up meal!

LE BISTRO | A NCL classic, Le Bistro is French cuisine enjoyed in an elegant setting. This specialty restaurant is the perfect spot for a romantic date or an elevated dinner with friends. If you love butter and French food, you cannot go wrong with Le Bistro.

Harr Travel, NCL, Norwegian Cruise Line, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva, Nama Sushi

NAMA SUSHI | This is a delicious sushi bar, and Danny’s personal favorite eatery onboard. A great compliment to Hasuki right across the way, Nama Sushi is relatively small restaurant serving delicious sushi and sashimi, so once again we recommend booking ahead if you want to enjoy.

FOOD REPUBLIC | This specialty restaurant is one of Danny’s personal favorites! There are a variety of options including sushi, hand rolls, and different styles of asian street food. This is a great option for a more casual specialty meal, and may be a bit easier to get into than other restaurants if you do not have prior reservations.

Palomar, Harr Travel, NCL, Norwegian Cruise Line, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva

PALOMAR | This was a brand new addition to Prima, and was brought to Viva because of the rave reviews! This is all about Mediterranean food, with emphasis on the seafood! Enjoy the Mediterranean delicacies in a stunning setting that features a beautiful bar, elegant seating that will make you feel as though you are in a Santorini restaurant, and gorgeous floor to ceiling windows!

STARBUCKS | You don't have to give up your daily Starbucks run while on Viva! Located in the beautiful Penrose Atrium, this full Starbucks has all your favorites and plenty of seating to enjoy your daily coffee!

Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva, Onda by Scarpetta

ONDA BY SCARPETTA | This gorgeous specialty restaurant is a piece of artwork in-and-of itself. Not only will you dine on authentic Italian cuisine such as brick oven pizza and handmade al dente pasta; but you will enjoy it all in a beautiful setting!

LOS LOBOS | This is the authentic Mexican restaurant on the ship, where you can enjoy your tacos and guacamole in the vibrant indoor and outdoor seating areas.

Complimentary Dining

Hudson's, Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva

Without a doubt, Viva has some of the most delicious and varied complimentary food choices in the entire cruise industry. You can enjoy the classic buffet option of the Surfside Cafe for a casual option, or sit down at Hudson's for an elegant main dining room experience. You can enjoy 24 hour bites at Local Bar & Grill, or elevated international cuisine at the fabulous new concept of the Indulge Food Hall. No matter what your preference, you can enjoy delicious food not only in the specialty restaurants, but the complimentary ones as well!

HUDSON’S | This gorgeous complimentary dining venue is a sight to behold! The space features wrap around windows, elegant white tablecloths, and beautiful columns and chandeliers throughout. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner here, which includes a static and rotating menu. You even have the ability to purchase from some of the specialty restaurants for an upcharge, if you so choose.

THE COMMODORE ROOM | This exquisite venue is just one of the many complimentary dining choices available on board. It is a fine dining experience featuring a combination of timeless and innovative new dishes.

SURFSIDE CAFE | This is the delicious buffet onboard. This is easy grab-and-go complimentary dining, and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every single day. Hot entrees, fruits, pastas, grilled foods, an egg station in the morning, desserts, salads, and of course the soft serve ice cream machine, Danny’s favorite! The Surfside Cafe onboard Viva is a bit smaller than the traditional buffets, as the hope is that guests will spread out amongst the rest of the complimentary venues such as the Indulge Food Hall and the Local.

SURFSIDE GRILL | This is a classic pool grill concept with hamburgers, hot dogs, and delicious brats! It is a great compliment to the Surfside buffet!

Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva, Indulge Food Hall

INDULGE FOOD HALL | This is an incredible dining hall where you have the ability to try food from several different restaurant options. The restaurants include Indian food, a dessert bar, asian street food, Texas bbq, a tapas truck, soups, salads, and more! There is seating at each restaurant space, as well as a large open seating area in the middle where you can order off an ipad from any of the food hall restaurants, and have it delivered to your table. There is also a large beverage station with complimentary drinks, and upsell options as well. The seating continues outdoors if you want to enjoy your food while taking in the delightful sea air!

LOCAL BAR & GRILL | This is a 24 hour eatery onboard the Viva, which is an incredible option, especially for any passengers who may be struggling with a little bit of jet lag. Here you have food served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the space also features a bar, lots of seating options, and a huge flat screen tv so you can catch the big game.

JUST ICE CREAM | This is the soft serve ice cream station that sits just outside the Indulge Food Hall. It's complimentary soft serve ice cream, the perfect snack for the whole family, and you will find Danny here several times a day to get his soft serve fix.

Bars & Nightlife

Norwegian Viva, NCL, Norwegian Cruise Line, Prima Class, Belvedere Bar

THE CASINO | If you love to gamble, there are lots of options for you at this classic cruise venue. From slot machines, to slide machines, and table games like craps, 3 card poker, and roulette, the Casino is the space for a bit of fun and a little risk. If you want the authentic casino royale experience, there is also a designated smoking section to enjoy. At Harr Travel we always recommend gambling responsibly, and have a good time while you do!

BELVEDERE BAR | This gorgeous, glittering space is an elegant place to relax with friends and order drinks made with delicious Belvedere Vodka by the talented onboard bar tenders.

METROPOLITAN | This art deco inspired bar is a nod to a bygone era, and includes a humidor where you can relax with friends and enjoy a cigar and a cocktail. While you are there, don't forget to have a little fun with the interactive butterfly artwork along the wall!

Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva, The Improv

THE IMPROV | The Improv is the comedy club onboard, and features a bar and lots of pub style seating; a great spot to have a drink and good laugh with your friends. This space is intimate, with only a select number of seats. As it is first-come-first-serve, we recommend getting in line ahead of time, as you do not want to miss the top-notch comedians that are onboard Viva.

LUNA BAR | Just off the Indulge Food Hall is the Luna Bar. Here you can sit and order drinks, or order from the Indulge Food Hall and they will deliver to the table!

SYD NORMAN’S | This is an intimate music venue, a space to enjoy a drink with friends while listening to the on board rock band! The band members mingle with the crowd, lending an interactive feel to the whole performance.

VIVA SPEEDWAY BAR | Right by the speedway, and behind the slides and the stadium, this is the place to relax and have a drink with friends after a big race!

Activities & Entertainment

Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva, Theater, Harr Travel

VIVA THEATER | This incredible space hosts amazing shows that will make you feel as though you are at a broadway production. Beetlejuice is the signature performance with an incredible cast and memorable songs that will have you laughing and crying all through the show. Icons is an amazing musical performance that pays homage to music legends such as Dolly Parton, Barbara Streisand, Lady Gaga, and more with hit after incredible hit that will have you cheering and singing along.

The theater also doubles as a night club, with the seating rolling back and away to create a energetic after-hours experience.

POOL DECK | There are 3 pools on the Pool Deck, one large pool right down the middle, and 2 infinity pools on either side. Here you will also find the Waves Pool Bar, which will serve drinks throughout the entire area. There is also the Surfside Cafe and Palomar for some outdoor dining and bites. There are lounge spaces all around, and this deck is also used for the Glow Party and other events during the cruise.

INFINITY BEACH | Located on both sides of the ship, these are additional pool areas to compliment the main pool deck. There are loungers in the sun and shade, daybeds where you can dip your toes in the refreshing wade pool water, and of course the beautiful infinity pool!

THE ART WALK | This portion of the deck will open up your imagination as you stroll past the many beautiful art installations that were commissioned just for Viva.

SPLASH ACADEMY | This is the kids club onboard! There are play areas for ages 3-12, art centers, craft spaces, a movie zone, games and more!

Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva, Galaxy Pavilion

GALAXY PAVILION | This is a fun space with several different futuristic game options. You just put on the VR headset and can enjoy off roading, flying spaceships, car racing, and so much more! There are also two escape rooms here as well, which you can book private just for your group, or join in on another group and work together to figure out how to escape.

VIVA SPEEDWAY | 3 stories of speed and adrenaline! This is a dynamic family entertainment zone, and those who are young and young at heart will have a fun time on the track. There is an observation area on one of the turns, and this is also where you will find laser guns that your friends and family can use to give your kart a boost for even more speed. The Viva Speedway is the world’s biggest go kart track at sea! Take advantage of the unlimited go kart pass so you can come back and race time and time again.

KIDS AQUAPARK | A great splash pad space for kiddos to have fun, with lounge chairs all around for parents to relax and watch their kids play.

THE STADIUM | This is the fun zone, where there are a ton of different games to play, from shuffleboard, to traditional and cylindrical ping pong, beer pong, foosball, and even a full pickleball court.

Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL, Prima Class, Norwegian Viva, Tee Time, Miniature Golf

MINIATURE GOLF | Golf is taken into the future with the addition of the new smart golf balls. This means your shots will be tracked and your points are calculated for you, so all you have to do is enjoy the game and get competitive with your friends and family. Each ball is tied to you, and after every shot, you will be able to see where you stand on the scoreboard screens that are at each putt putt course. At the very last hole, you even have the ability to win prizes!

THE SLIDES | There are 3 separate slides on the ship, 2 on one side, 1 on the other. The Rush is the spot where you and a friend can race against each other, a great place to get competitive with your family or group. The Drop is a thrilling slide; the floor drops out from under you, dropping you into a corkscrew for the ultimate thrill!

THE WAVE WATER SLIDE | This is an inner tube water slide that will give you all the thrills! You will drop down into a large bowl that sends you around and down to the bottom, spraying you with water all the way! The best part is that you don't have to carry your inner tube back to the top because there is a conveyor belt that takes it up for you.

Travel | madeline soto: stephan sterns charged with first-degree murder, things to do, subscriber only, travel | ncl details new dining on canaveral-bound norwegian aqua.

Sukhothai is the first Thai restaurant for Norwegian Cruise Line debuting on new ship Norwegian Aqua in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

With more room than its two sister ships, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest vessel will feature several new and redesigned dining options when it arrives at Port Canaveral next spring.

Norwegian Aqua is the first of what the line is calling its Prima Plus class, 10% larger than 2021’s Prima and 2023’s Viva. The ship comes in at 1,056 feet long, 156,300 gross tons and a 3,571-passenger capacity based on double occupancy. That’s still smaller than the line’s popular Breakaway Plus class ships Escape, Joy, Bliss and Encore.

Still, the extra room means a shift of some returning venues found on Prima and Viva and the introduction of three new offerings.

At the top of the list is the line’s first dedicated Thai venue called Sukhothai, a specialty restaurant headed to Deck 17 with items such as Thai cashew chicken, salt and pepper prawns and Thai grilled steak salad. There also will be a variety of curries. The venue’s design comes from SMC Design firm out of London aiming to blend traditional and contemporary Thai elements, according to the line.

“(Guests) will be greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere of bamboo and rice paper pendant lights; a striking geometric patterned floor; and colorful furniture transporting diners to the culturally rich country of Thailand,” according to a press release.

It joins a pair of returning Asian fare venues, the Japanese hibachi Hasuki as well as relatively new offering Nama Sushi and Sashimi, which is found on both Prima and Viva, but will feature an updated look on Aqua. Nama’s design from NCL-favorite designers Studio DADO out of Miami will draw from Manga art.

“Guests can expect a playful dining experience surrounded by bold colors of lime green and black,” the line stated.

Planterie is a second new food offering that will actually be one of 10 cuisines to be offered at returning food hall concept Indulge Food Hall on Deck 8. The menu will be all plant-based bowls and other healthy options, the line’s first dedicated eatery with a full plant-based menu. Example items include the Southwest Bowl with smoked tempeh and the Mediterranean Goddess Bowl with spiced vegetables, tabbouleh and honey-roasted carrots.

Indulge Food Hall will get a design makeover by New York’s Rockwell Group going for deep wood accents and gold and metal furnishings. It’s one of the more popular and free options on board both Prima and Viva with both indoor and outdoor seating, and a reputation for getting cruisers their food fast. They sit down, order food using tablets from among all the available offerings such as Mediterranean tapas, barbecue and dessert.

Swirl Wine Bar is a new venue coming to Norwegian Aqua when it debuts in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

Another new venue will be dedicated to wine. The Swirl Wine Bar also designed by Studio DADO will be “tucked away” on Deck 6.

“The hidden enclave will feature a comprehensive wine-by-the-glass menu, and an extensive list of rare and premium vintages,” the line stated. “The venue’s architecture is inspired by the captivating beauty and curvature of the geologically stunning Antelope Canyon in Arizona, with warm color hues complemented by cascading horizontal lines and serene blue touches create a perfectly inviting and enchanting space for guests to unwind.”

The sustainable-themed Metropolitan bar will be getting a new and larger home with new design as well, courtesy of Studio DADO. Moving from mid-ship to the aft on Deck 7, it will now feature a grand piano and small stage for live music with an art-deco design from mid-1900s New York.

The Commodore Room is getting a makeover for Norwegian Aqua when it debuts in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

Studio DADO is also reworking the complimentary dining space, the Commodore Room, with a more rustic sea-fairing theme.

“Paying homage to the imaginative narrative of the captain’s room, the venue will transport guests to the past times of maritime sophistication with antique wood furnishings; leather banquettes; floors that mimic the lines of a pier; and incredible stone accents, all with a delicate, modern touch,” the line stated.

Other venues getting makeover for Aqua include the Surfside Cafe buffet and Mediterranean seafood option Palomar as well as the Penrose Bar and Waves Pool Bar. The Whiskey Bar and Belvedere Bar are also migrating to new spaces on the ship.

The increased space also means more seating for Hasuki, The Local Bar & Grill and steakhouse Cagney’s.

The ship will also see the return of free venue Hudson’s with its 270-degree views as well as specialty venues French restaurant Le Bistro, Mexican restaurant Los Lobos and Italian restaurant Onda by Scarpetta.

Norwegian Aqua will begin sailing from Port Canaveral when it debuts in 2025. (Courtesy/NCL)

Aqua will begin seven-night sailing of Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral beginning in April 2025 before migrating to New York in August and then back to Florida, but sailing out of Miami from October 2025-April 2026.

Among the ship highlights will be what the line says is the first hybrid coaster at sea, a digital sports complex and the first three-bedroom duplex suites for the cruise line in its exclusive area called The Haven.

Set to become NCL’s 20th ship in its fleet, construction continues at the Fincantieri shipyards in Italy, and it marks the first of four planned ships in the Prima Plus class through 2028.

NCL’s parent company recently announced it was also working to secure funding for what would be the biggest class of ship ever for the line at more than 200,000 gross tons with four ships on order from 2030-2036.

Moscow Day Trip

Cool Cruiser

We're extremely interested in a cruise next summer on the Soujourn which stops in St. Petersburg for almost three days. Seabourn lists two different "day trips" to Moscow via high speed train. Having previously cruised to St. Petersburg, we really don't want to stay there for three days and a side trip to Moscow would be the highlight of the cruise. Has anyone taken this excursion?

I have been to Moscow many times, but never as part of a cruise. Was recently on a Baltics cruise and spoke to people who had - it takes it out of them as it was a super long day. In fact they got home so late that third day they slept in and had "sea day" at port.

There is so much to see in Moscow, I it should be a land trip and there are many nice hotels on which you can stay. It is really a 3 day experience. Having said that, if there is not much else you want to see in St Petersburg, and you don't think you will get back to Russia by land, it is a very interesting city with much to do. You will skim the surface, but will enjoy. I would only do if you had limited or no plans in St Petersburg - especially the day after as you return very late at night.

If you do not go, there are many not so well known things to do in SP. The Russian Museum is fascinating for example as is Yuspov Palace. The military museums and sights are interesting as well.

Whatever you decide to do you will have a great time!

Doing a "day-trip" from St. Petersburg to Moscow and back can work well. We did that trip in 2008 with Crystal. Having sailed in the Greek Islands in 2006 with Seabourn on our first cruise, I am sure that the quality would be similar with your cruise line. One change now would be the use of the high-speed train in place of flying back and forth as we did in 2008. Here are more details to consider:

Having three days in St. Petersburg allows enough time to do BOTH in seeing Moscow and going to other places near where your ship is docked. Only a few of the better lines, such as Seabourn and Crystal, have that type of schedule. We used in 2008 the main schedule airline, Rossiya Russian Airlines, for this trip. That line is now part of Aeroflot. The train trip takes long, but lessens some of the added time needed going out to the airport and the train gets you closer to the central part of Moscow.

I'll offer up some added background, along with various pro/con factors for your consideration. My wife thought it was lots of money, but she viewed it as very much worth it after completing the trip as a "once in a lifetime" experience.

CON FACTORS : It's a long day! Leave the ship about 8 am (greeted by a small welcoming band dockside); lots of driving and traffic; get back by return flight to the St. Petersburg airport around midnight and back to the ship a little before 1 am. The cost through Crystal Cruises was not cheap, but it does include everything, including all bus transfers, your jet air flights on regularly schedule commercial airlines, lunch on the bus, dinner in a nice/historic club/restaurant, admissions, etc., etc. Moscow is a super large city of about ten million people. There has been huge growth in the suburbs of this city during the past decades or so. Traffic and time from the airport to the main downtown takes about an hour. You can get a good feel as you travel into town through the coach windows about the “new Moscow” with its suburban growth, commerce, advertising, capitalism, etc.

PRO FACTORS : Moscow has its unique history, sights and sites, from Ivan the Terrible up through Lenin, Stalin and the new Russian leaders of today. After a long ride in from the airport on the outer edge of this large metro areas of 17.3 million (with 10.5 million in the city), we stopped at a new hotel for coffee/tea/break. Then, we rode the Moscow subway and saw a couple of their very unique and artistic stations. Stalin at the time called these stations “People’s Palaces”. This Moscow Metro was first opened in 1935 and now has 182 stations, 12 different lines,187 miles of routes and carries seven million passengers each weekday. It’s the world second busiest subway system. This subway ride offered a good sampling of real life for people who live and work in Moscow. We then saw more key places enroute, including the home of the Bolshoy Ballet, KGB Headquarters, various Stalin era buildings, etc. Then we went to the Kremlin with its 19 historic towers. WOW, we were really there!

Inside the Kremlin are three key “super stars”. First, was the State Armoury with its spectacular Faberge Eggs, plus so many carriages, crowns, gowns, jewels, etc. Second are the various historic Cathedrals within the Kremlin Walls, plus the Tower Bells, Icon art, etc. This includes the Cathedral of the Annunciation built in the 1480’s and having such spectacular wall murals and icons. Third, was the Great Kremlin Palace with its spectacular reception halls, inlaid wood floors, gold and more gold, fancy ceilings, etc. The Czars were crowned here, plus the current heads of the Russian government, etc. You might check whether your cruise trip will take you insider here. The size and scale of these areas are hard to describe in words, let alone reflect and capture the history that has happened in some of these rooms dating back to the late 1400’s. We have seen lots of great palaces all over Europe, but this is something above and beyond for the eyes, heart and brain.

Then, we saw more building inside the walls of the Kremlin. We went outside of the Kremlin Walls and walked next door to adjoining Red Square, seeing St. Basil’s and the re-done Gum Department Store. Red Square is so historic, especially having grown up seeing the military May Day parades there, visuals of Lenin’s Tomb, etc. Have the words “spectacular” and historic been used too much? Maybe, but it fits for many of these unique places. St. Basil’s was built 1555–1561 on the order of Ivan IV (the Terrible). It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower (266 feet tall) in 1600 inside the Kremlin Walls. To be able to “CONTRAST” and compare Moscow and St. Petersburg during these three short days adds to the benefits of seeing both of these great Russian capital cities. Each is a very different and special city.

We finished with dinner in the Central Writers’ Club, a one hundred years old mansion made into a restaurant with crystal chandeliers, rich wood panelling, fireplaces, and antique balustrades. Finally, we drove back to the airport, passing many of the new suburban commercial development with big box stores and luxury housing, etc.

Is one day too short and limited? YES! You can, however, do and see lots in only that one short day. You get a small sampling above. How often do you get to Russia? The Cold War might not come back in full force, but there are going to be increasing and revisited tensions in future years involving Russia and getting access there. The major cruise lines have done this tour many times and has its details down well and timing perfected. Let me know any questions, thoughts or reactions.

Here are a few picture highlights of what we saw in Moscow. Have more to share, if you would like added views for the great potentials there.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

The famed KGB Headquarters in Moscow where many entered and did not exit (alive) during the 1950’s and 1960’s:

Kazan Cathedral sits on the northeast corner of Red Square in Moscow. The current building is a reconstruction of the original church which was destroyed at the direction of Joseph Stalin in 1936. The original church was erected as a shrine in the early 1630s to mark the city's liberation from the Polish aggressors. After the Soviet Union’s fall, this was the first church to be completely rebuilt. The cathedral's restoration (1990–1993) was based on the detailed measurements and photographs of the original church:

Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

We did it with Regent several years ago. We were also docked in St Petersburg for 3 days. We flew to Moscow though. Not sure how long the high speed train takes, but until you get to the airport, through security and your flight leaves it may be the same. It was a great day. I wouldn't have wanted to miss it. We got back about 11 and they had a special dinner waiting for those of us on this excursion. Really did get to see the highlights of Moscow as well as a fabulous lunch.

10,000+ Club

I did the day trip to Moscow several years ago with Seabourn. Normally, I would never undertake such a grueling day but it was my third time in St. Petersburg and I had seen everything I wanted so I thought why not? It turned out to be a highlight of the trip. Yes, it was a long day but who cares. The day is just as long if you stay on board. Seabourn handled the whole thing extremely well from the flights to the guides to the meals to the private sightseeing. We saw and experienced so much in that one day that I felt I had been there for two or three. Is it better to go and spend a few days? Of course! But if that is not an option and you're not sure if you'll ever get there on your own I think it's a great thing to do.

Everything I said though is only for those who have been to St. Petersburg before. If it's your first time you'll need every minute of those three days there to see even a fraction of what there is to see.

Thaks for all the great information. We will be on the Sojourn late next summer in the Baltic. We have been to St Petersburg and are thinking we might do this if offered. Sounds great, hope we get the chance!

I can't thank you all enough for your quick and in depth responses. As much as I would like to take an extended tour of Moscow/Russia someday, I've learned that you never know what the future holds and not to let a good opportuity pass you by. The overall positive reviews and amazing pictures have sold us. While I realize we might be exhausted from the long day, it sounds well worth it.

Glad we have helped to "SELL YOU". You are summarizing and approaching things correctly. See "IT" while you can and are close. Here are a few more pictures to help you get ready for the amazing sights you will experience there in Moscow.

Like you, we did the Moscow trip after a couple of trips to St Petersburg. Wouldn't have missed it for the world- totally different feel from SP, or anywhere else in the world. For those of us who lived through the cold war, it brought to life the spy novels I have read all my life.

Could you please send more information on your Moscow trips - we would like to do a seperate trip to Moscow after the cruise. Any leads or information would be appreciated.

We were on the Sojourn July/August 2012. We did a private day trip to Moscow using SPB tours via high speed train on our 2nd day in ST P. They picked us up from the ship around 5:30 am and dropped us off at the rail station, and we met our tour guide and a driver for the two of us at the Moscow rail station. It took 4 hours each way for the train, but it went from city center to city center, and it seemed to go by relatively quickly. We had a great time in Moscow- seeing the highlights as described on the tour itinerary, and we could customize it. There seemed to be little English spoken in Moscow, people not as friendly as in St P, and the traffic was horrible. I was actually glad to get back to St P( at around midnight).

It was a busy day, but that didn't stop us from a full day of touring before and after the Moscow trip on private tours by SPB tours. It was quite expensive, but I'm glad we went- and I really have no desire to go back.

seabournaddict

Years ago we did a land tour of Russia, so got to spend about 5 days in both Moscow and St Petersburg. I actually like Moscow more than St Petersburg. We have also done a Baltic cruise on Seabourn, so have had another 3 days in St Petersburg, so NEXT time we will certainly do the day tour to Moscow. I would also prefer to do it the way they do now, by train, would have been dubious about a Russian "domestic" flight. ;)

I could've sworn I'd responded to this thread earlier:confused:

I'd take my chances on a domestic flight with their new fancy Boeing planes (or even an odd Ilyushin). The train was a less than stellar experience. Four hours each way in a straight backed non reclining seat. Some of them had another passenger about 24" in front of you, facing you - so no sticking your legs out. Further they didn't seem to believe in AC so the car just got hotter and hotter. Moscow itself was great, I found it particularly amusing that right across from Red Square they had a capitalist pig-dog mall filled with luxury American and European brands.

Following is a description and personal review of the Seabourn Cruise - St. Petersburg -shore excursion: “MOSCOW BY TRAIN & THE MYSTERIOUS KREMLIN”

On June 18, 2012 – my wife and I participated in the Seabourn Pride’s Moscow Excursion along with 12 other passengers and 2 guides. Most of us had room service breakfast at 4:30am, crossed the flooded river outside Russian Customs and met the bus @ 5:30am for a transfer to the St. Petersburg Train Station. The high speed train (mostly at 130-140 MPH) left the station at 6:30am and arrived in Moscow at 10:15am. The train ride was uneventful and a box snack was provided.

In Moscow, we were met by the local guide and a full size bus. We drove into and around central Moscow for about 30 min. – buildings and sights are interesting, but do not compare to the historical & decorative buildings of St. Petersburg. We then took a Metro (subway) ride in Moscow. The metro is interesting, but not as impressive as St. Petersburg’s. (You will notice that throughout this review, I state that St. Petersburg is better than Moscow, which is true of everything except for the Kremlin, which holds its own and should be the main purpose of this excursion.) (Seabourn states that the Kremlin is closed on Thursday – THEREFORE, DO NOT TAKE THIS TOUR ON THURSDAY.)

After driving around Moscow again to view several areas from the bus, we visited the Kremlin , which is a very large wall enclosed fortress with hundreds of buildings, churches, monuments, fortress walls with many towers/etc. After a long walk (many long walks to come) at an OLYMPIC SPEED PACE (You will walk fast to see everything in the allotted time). We started with the “Armory” museum which was very good and I do not normally like museums. There are rooms with royalty gowns, Czars’ crowns, royalty carriages, suits of amour and weapons, jewel covered bibles, Faberge Eggs, etc. – basically Royal Treasures. From here we walked to the “Churches Square” with It’s 17 churches. We entered the Annunciation Cathedral where most all the Czars were crowned. Outside - took pictures of the largest BELL in the world that has never been rung and the largest CANNON that has never been fired. Took pictures of government buildings and the President’s Palace.

At about 1:45pm, we walked back to the bus for a short ride to a very prestigious restaurant (and it was) for a four course late-lunch with an excellent French Bordeaux.

After lunch, we visited the very large Red Square @ 3:15pm for a tour of “St. Basil’s Cathedral” which was beautiful and very interesting with its many Onion Domes – but I liked St. Petersburg’s “Church on the Spilled Blood” better. We were able to see the front of the Lenin’s Tomb , but it was closed. At the other end of the Square was a beautiful museum and very nice smaller church where recorded services were being played.

We had 45 min. on our own to walk around the Square and after another long fast walk back to our bus, we proceeded to the train station for a 7:45pm departure back to St. Petersburg. A snack and drink was provided. Arriving in St. Petersburg at 11:30pm, with the sun just beginning to set (the mid-night sun), we proceeded to the ship – 18 hour tour/ 21 hour day.

Summary: Is the tour worth $1,000 per person – only if it is important to see Moscow once in your lifetime. See St. Petersburg first ; tour has extensive walking at a very fast pace; you will be going to Moscow to see the Kremlin which is historical and beautiful.

Description

See all the gems of historical and cultural center of the capital in short time and without traffic jams or tiresome walking.

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River boat trip, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours.

Highlights of the tour

  • St Basil’s Cathedral;
  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
