This helicopter tour was the absolute highlight of our trip to Iceland! Soaring over the volcanic landscapes of the Reykjanes peninsula was a breathtaking experience. The views were absolutely incredible - a dramatic panorama of craters, lava fields, and geothermal features that you simply cannot see from the ground. But what truly elevated the experience was our fantastic pilot. They were incredibly knowledgeable and informative, pointing out all the interesting geological features and sharing fascinating facts about the region's volcanic history. Their passion for Iceland was contagious, and they made the entire flight even more enjoyable. We even got a close-up view of the Fagradalsfjall volcano, which erupted in 2022 and the recent eruption site from 2023. Seeing the raw power of nature firsthand was awe-inspiring. This tour is an absolute must for anyone visiting Iceland who wants a unique and unforgettable perspective of the country's stunning natural beauty.

Where to begin! This was absolutely the best trip of my life. I’ve been planning this trip since September of 2023. Guide to Iceland had so much helpful information about the country that assisted in knowing what to expect. If I had any questions they were quick in responding. I did encounter a couple hiccups which I feel was partially out of their control, however they were quick in fixing the situation. I unfortunately didn’t get to see the Northern Lights, nor was I able to do one thing on my journey the way they planned it and it being closed on the day they planned it on the itinerary. Just gives me a reason to come back, so I made peace with it. I’d recommend this and using them to assist in making your dream a reality.

Ryan Ellis

Amazing views!! Skilled and knowledgeable staff, and our pilot was fantastic. Once in a lifetime opportunity I’ll never forget, thank you!

This is an eye-opening tour for me, with lots of knowledge of vocalno cave to absorb and an unforgettable experience in the total darkness for a couple of minutes. The tour guide lady was very friendly and professional.

Embarking on a volcano tour in Iceland takes you on an exciting journey into the heart of this land of fire and ice, where dramatic geological forces have sculpted the landscape for millennia. These tours offer the perfect blend of adventure, education, and natural beauty, giving travelers a unique opportunity to witness the raw power of volcanic activity.

As you set out on a volcano tour, you'll venture into Iceland's volcanic realms, rich in history and geological significance. These tours often feature expert guides who share their extensive knowledge, shedding light on the volcanic processes that have shaped Iceland's topography.

One of the remarkable aspects of volcano tours is the chance to witness volcanic features up close. Travelers may explore volcanic craters, lava fields, and even enter magma chambers of dormant or extinct volcanoes such as the Thrihnukagigur volcano in West Iceland .

On rare occasions, you can even witness an active eruption of volcanoes in Iceland from a close yet safe distance. Some of the most recent visitor-friendly ones occurred in the Litli-Hrutur and Fagradalsfjall  volcanoes on the Reykjanes peninsula , with eruptions taking place in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Beyond the natural wonders, volcano tours also emphasize safety and environmental conservation. Tour operators prioritize responsible exploration, ensuring these fragile and unique environments are preserved for future generations.

Volcanoes: The Pillars of the Earth

volcano eruption tour iceland

Volcanoes remind us of the beauty, power, and majesty of nature — and Iceland has more than its fair share! These living mountains spit liquid fire and alter the world around them, creating lava caves  and darkened skies.

Arctic Adventures volcano tours bring you straight into the belly of the beast. Walk above volcanoes to behold them from above, or conquer your volcano of choice by wheel or foot.

Here’s a quick guide to Iceland’s mighty volcanoes and how to enjoy the country’s fieriest attractions.

Going Underground: How Volcanoes Create Caves and Tunnels

volcano eruption tour iceland

Have you ever seen a blowtorch? Industrial forging is a good indication of how lava works. The basic principle of fire forging also leads to lava tunnels: scorching liquid coursing through softer walls of resistance beneath a harder surface. During volcano tours, you walk on or under this surviving surface! Many caves and lava tunnels are sturdy and big enough for people to pass through.

There are many ways to get to the heart of a volcano in Iceland. A popular choice is the Thrihnukagigur Volcano  – literally the only place on Earth where you can explore the inside of a magma chamber.

After crossing a lava field on foot, you take the lift 400 meters (1200 feet) down into the heart of the volcano. The burned insides are a sight to behold – shades of red, orange and other colors that cannot be seen anywhere else. You’ll see firsthand how the mountain’s insides are reshaped as lava rips through them. No wonder CNN lists Thrihnukagigur Volcano as one of the must-see places in the world!

If you’re feeling even more adventurous, why not try caving? Iceland’s volcanoes have carved out a vast, intricate and fascinating series of underground tunnels.   Our Underworld Tour  brings you into tunnels that were created thousands of years ago by searing rivers of lava. Behold the otherworldly shapes and colors created by Iceland’s volcanoes and – if you visit at the right time of year – marvel at the beautiful icicles.

Scorched Earth: How Landscapes Are Shaped by Lava

Iceland’s glorious vistas are the result of the country’s turbulent environment. Over the centuries, locals created captivating mythology to explain how Iceland’s landmarks were formed. For instance, the volcanic rock formations of Dimmuborgir (roughly translated as “Dark Castles” in Icelandic) were said to be the home of the half-troll, half-ogre Grýla and her 13 children. The real stories are no less exciting!

Iceland’s Most Famous Volcanoes: Hekla, Katla, Eyjafjallajökull, Fagradalsfjall and Litla-Hrút

Hekla, queen of the volcanoes.

volcano eruption tour iceland

Mount Hekla  is undoubtedly the queen of Iceland’s 100 volcanoes. Hekla last erupted on February 26, 2000. According to scientists, the volcano’s pressure measurements are now rising at a higher rate than they were at the last eruption! We don’t know when Hekla will blow her top next, but it could be very soon.

Hekla is often called the “Queen of Iceland”. You can find the legendary volcano in the Fjallabak Mountains. Hikers from across the globe dream of climbing to the summit of Hekla — a 1491-meter trek.

Katla Volcano

volcano eruption tour iceland

Katla Volcano often makes headlines because of the belief that a future eruption is drawing closer and closer. Local Icelanders don’t understand all the hype — nothing unusual has happened at Katla, so there’s no cause for immediate concern. Then again, that could just be the typical mindset when you live in such a volcanic country!

Katla lies beneath the surface of Kötlujökull Glacier, an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull’s Glacier in the Southern Highlands. Katla is a stratovolcano, just like the notorious Eyjafjallajökull Volcano that erupted in 2010. It’s also one of the biggest and most active volcanoes in Iceland. The volcano has erupted 16-20 times in the last thousand years. The last eruption occurred in 1918.

Throughout history, the time between eruptions was 20 to 80 years. However, it has now been over 100 years since Katla last erupted.  This either means that Katla has “shut down,” or that its next volcanic event is long overdue. In more recent years, Katla has had smaller eruptions that didn’t disturb its glacier ice layer. The last small eruption occurred in 2011.

Eyjafjallajökull Volcano

volcano eruption tour iceland

Eyjafjallajökull is a rare stratovolcano in Iceland. You may have heard the name of this volcano before — in 2010, the ash cloud that erupted from Eyjafjallajökull brought air travel across Europe to a stop for five days! The 2010 eruption was the largest volcanic event in Iceland since the Katla Volcano eruption in 1918, nearly 100 years earlier.

Adventure seekers love to trek across the unique paths that have been formed by volcanic activity. The most famous of these paths is Thorsmork Volcano Hike , a hike from Thorsmork Valley to Fimmvorduhals Pass. Along the way, hikers pass by the newly-created craters of Magni and Modi. These craters point to the scene of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

The views along the Thorsmork Volcano Hike are among the most beautiful in Iceland. At the 800-meter summit of the craters, hikers look over stunning hillside, volcanic paths, and magnificent glaciers. This unique landscape was largely formed by rivers of lava.

You can also try out the Eyjafjallajökull Tour , which brings you to this epic volcano on a Super Jeep.

Fagradalsfjall volcano

volcano eruption tour iceland

Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted for the first time on March 3rd, 2021, and for the second time on August 3rd, 2022, and is located in Geldingadalur on Reykjanes Peninsula. After the series of earthquakes, an eruptive fissure opened in Meradalir, a bit north of the last eruption. The eruption site is only 9 kilometers away from the nearest Grindavik village, making it one of the most accessible volcanic eruptions ever. Thousands of tourists and locals have visited the site individually or with a guided tour .

LITLI-HRÚTUR VOLCANO

volcano eruption tour iceland

On July 10, 2023, at approximately 16:40 , a volcanic eruption occurred near the Litli-Hrútur mountain, southwest of Reykjavik. This marks the third eruption in the region within three years. The eruption is classified as small and is not emitting ash into the atmosphere. Lava is flowing from a 200-meter (656 feet) fissure, creating captivating fountains. Concerns arise due to potentially high levels of volcanic gases, leading to the closure of access to the volcano. The eruption was preceded by increased seismic activity for a week. Fortunately, the eruption site is uninhabited, ensuring no immediate risks to communities or infrastructure. The lava flow is intensifying, resulting in expanding crater s. From July 12, the eruption site partially opened and visitors can explore it via the Meradalir Route from Suðurstrandarvegur. This 20km journey requires preparation, but with a guided tour, appropriate clothing, food, water, and a charged mobile phone, it can be a safe and unforgettable experience despite the site's dynamic nature.

This 20 km journey requires preparation, but with a guided tour , appropriate clothing, food, water, and a charged mobile phone, it can be a safe and unforgettable experience despite the site's dynamic nature. Follow the updates on the most recent volcano eruption in Iceland!

SUNDHNUKAGIGAR VOLCANO

Sundhnukagigar volcano is known to erupt two times: first, on December 18th, 2023 . The eruption that took 3 days happened near the town of Grindavik . The area is known to be seismically active, with another eruption of the same volcano following in February of 2024 . Because of these eruptions taking place near Grindavik, the citizens of this town were evacuated. For more details about this eruption, continue to read Seismic activity in Reykjanes Peninsula .

HAGAFELL VOLCANO

The new year in Iceland was already marked with an eruption that took place on January 14th, 2024 . This is when lava near Hagafell Mountain burst. Since this wasn't the first recent eruption in the area, the authorities were prepared, making sure that no citizens of Grindavik were still in the town. The flights and other services were operating as per usual.

Lunar Landscapes

volcano eruption tour iceland

Geothermal activity has formed Iceland’s most beautiful landscapes, from deep green valleys to towering mountain peaks. Volcanoes are also to thank for the creation of the phenomenal Askja Caldera.  The vast Askja Caldera  is the result of a collapsed lava chamber that was ruptured during a volcanic eruption. The caldera is filled with electric blue water, forming a lake within the crater.

The area around Askja Caldera is lifeless and scorched like a distant planet. In fact, NASA astronauts prepared for the 1969 moon landing with a visit to Askja!

The Land of Fire and Ice

Volcanoes are not just part of Iceland’s landscape. They’re also part of the national culture and mindset. Local Icelanders have a special respect and admiration for the ways that frightening aspects of nature create beauty and power. The country’s volcanic history has inspired local mythology and continues to influence lore to this day. T hese beasts’ towering reputation echoes throughout the world.

Iceland’s love for its volcanoes burns like molten lava and is solid as a mountain.

How To Visit The Volcano?

The best and safest way to visit a volcano is with a guided tour. Expert guides will be able to lead you to the eruption site, choosing the most secure paths and the optimal distance to observe the newly formed lava fields so you can get the best, safest, and most enjoyable experience. You can choose to book the hike to the eruption site or book a helicopter tour and see the volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula from above!

Is it safe to hike up to the eruption site?

Authorities in Iceland have taken the necessary steps to ensure everyone's safety. Hiking in the area will only be allowed once they give the go-ahead. Keep an eye on the situation and regular updates .

When exploring volcanic areas, it's crucial to maintain a safe distance, be mindful of gas exposure, and know the direction of the wind to avoid any mishaps.

What to bring to The Volcano?

Make sure that you are prepared before heading out to the volcano. We recommend wearing hiking clothes and packing a backpack with:

  • Extra layers, gloves and headwear
  • Good waterproof hiking shoes
  • Waterproof jacket and pants
  • Snacks for the hike & water
  • Camera and extra batteries

Is it possible to go to the restroom during the hike?

There are no restrooms at the area just nature 😊 We do recommend that people use the restrooms in Grindavík where we stop for lunch before we start the hike.

Is The Eruption Site Open For A Visit?

Currently, the area near the eruption site is closed for safety reasons, until further notice. Please check regularly for updates on on accessible areas and safety rules.

Do I Need A Guide To Accompany Me To The Eruption Site?

When the eruption area will be safe and open for visitors, it is not obligatory to be accompanied by a professional guide to visit the site. However, taking a guided tour is safer than visiting the eruption site as fellow travelers will accompany you, and a local professional guide will ensure your safety.

Is The Eruption At Meradalir Still Ongoing?

No, the eruptions at Fagradalsfjall and Meradalir have concluded. The current volcanic activity is centered at Hagafell, located near Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, and involves a new eruption that began on December 18 .

Embark on a journey to witness geothermal wonders, natural phenomena, and breathtaking landscapes.

The tour’s highlight is hiking in the area of the recent eruptions from 2021 until today near  Fagradalsfjall Volcano . The eruption in July 2023 took place close by, at  Litli Hrutur and the newest eruption is also in the vicinity of the  Sundhnukagigar Volcano  eruption site, which erupted in December 2023.

Tour Description

We will meet at your chosen hotel or bus stop in Reykjavik at around 8 am.

Our Volcano hike and Geothermal tour is a great introduction to the influence volcanic activity has had on the landscape of iceland. This tour explores the Reykjanes Peninsula which is located a short drive from the capital Reykjavík. The peninsula is situated on the fissure line of the mid-Atlantic ridge which is the cause of all the eruptions, earthquakes and other seismic activity in the region.

The highlight of the tour is of course the visit to the eruption sites at  Fagradalsfjall and Meradlir volcanoes  situated in the Geldingadalir valley. This is Iceland´s most recently active volcano. This is a rare opportunity indeed as there have been very few easily accessible and safe to visit active volcanoes in Iceland in living memory. This tour offers a chance to experience geothermal wonders, natural phenomena, and places of stunning beauty.

Along with this magnificent volcano, our experienced and knowledgeable guides will take you to some of the other highlights that Reykjanes Peninsula has to offer. These include the boiling waters and sulphuric steamy air at the  Seltún  and  Gunnuhver  hot-springs, a walk between the American and Euroasian continental plates at the  Bridge between Continents , a wonderful photo opportunity at  Reykjanesviti lighthouse  and the black sand beaches of  Kleifarvatn  Lake. The compact nature of the peninsula means that you fit an awful lot into this 10 hour day tour.

We wish you a beautiful day, filled with tons of unforgettable memories!

volcano eruption tour iceland

Meradalir and Fagradalsfjall Volcano

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with a volcano eruption site. Normally volcanic eruptions in Iceland occur in very remote and difficult to reach locations. In the same area as the 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption, the tour includes a hike of 3-4 hours and a total distance of 6-12km.

Your guide will take you to the nearest viewing point for the best view of the newly made lava field. During the height of the eruption, lava shot many hundreds of metres in the air and was visible over the mountains in Reykjavík, 50 kms to the north. Once expelled from the crater, the lava flowed down the valley adding to the immense mass of the newly formed lava fields. On the drive to the volcano you will have seen moss covered lava fields formed many thousands of years ago. The new and rapidly cooling lava fields will no doubt resemble them in years to come. Even if you happen to visit on a less active day, you cannot fail to be impressed by the sheer scale and landscape changing power of this eruption.

Gunnuhver Hot-springs

We proceed to Gunnuhver hot-springs, the centerpiece of the UNESCO Global Geopark. This protected geothermal area is highly active, with steam vents and mud-pools dotting the landscape.

In myth, the mischievous ghost of Gúðrun or Gúnna was trapped here in the mud-pools. Perhaps the violent, barely repressed nature of the area can be explained by the presence of this angry ghost!. Hver is the Icelandic word for hot-spring. So this is the hot-spring of Gunna or Gunnuhver.

Iceland's largest mud-pool is located here and measures 20m in diameter. Like at Seltun, the smelly sulphuric steam lingers over the area.

Geothermal power plants are common in Iceland and Iceland is a world leader in harnessing this raw geothermal energy as well as in renewable energy. The nearby Reykjanes Power Station use this thermal water for electricity generation and district heating for the locality.

Reykjanesviti Lighthouse and Coastal Features

We continue to the majestic Reykjanesviti lighthouse. Dating from the early 20th century, this popular lighthouse has guided ships for over a century with its light a shining beacon at a height of 63m above sea-level. Situated on Bæjarfell hill, the lighthouse is popular with amateur photographers and is also a good place to take in the breathtaking coastal features.  Here you can also admire Valhnúkamöl boulder ridge, sea-cliffs, sea-stacks, and skerries which are a haven and nesting ground for sea-birds of all description. Eldey Island in the distance is home to the world´s largest Northern Gannet colony, with over 16,000 breeding pairs. These coastal features are under constant attack by the furious waves of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The Bridge between Continents

Our last stop of the day is the Bridge between Continents. After witnessing the effects of seismic activity over the course of this day, here is an opportunity to visualise the root cause of all the wonders you have seen.

Reykjanes peninsula lies on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where two major tectonic plates are moving apart from one another, the gap increasing by a few centimeters each year. This location is one of the few locations on earth in which this ridge is above sea level. The bridge between continents is a 15-meter footbridge that gives you a unique opportunity to walk between the two tectonic plates where North America and Europe drift apart.

We get back on the bus and begin our drive back to the city which will take just under 1 hour and will see moss covered lava fields, the remains of past volcanic eruptions in this region scarred and built from seismic activity.

A most recent eruption started on the 3rd of August 2022 in Mt. Fagradalsfjall and ended on September 21st. Even though the eruption site is currently dormant, geologists forecast that this eruption is only a small chapter of a bigger story. Iceland is likely entering a volcanic period with many more eruptions like this on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

These last two volcanic eruptions have not posed any threat to the nearby populated areas or infrastructure. Neither have they caused any disruption to international aviation.

So if you have booked a flight or a tour in Iceland, you can continue with your travel plans.

It's important to dress according to weather and wear good hiking shoes. We recommend packing a lunch, as the hike to the eruption site is challenging and can take up to 2 hours.

Our partners at Iceland Camping Equipment can provide you with the perfect gear for a small fee, please rent your gear at least 24 hours prior to departure.

Overview of Fagradalsfjall / Geldingadalur active volcano eruption in Iceland

September 2021

Geldingadalur / Fagradalsfjall volcano by helicopter

Update: This tour takes you to the most recent volcanic eruption sites at Reykjanes volcano (Fagradalsfjall / Meradalir / Litli-H rútur / Sundhnúkahraun  /  Reykja nes Peninsula) in Iceland. This eruption was active as follows:

  • March –  September  2021 (Fagradalsfjall)
  • August 2022 (Meradalir)
  • July/August 2023 (Litli-Hrútur)
  • December 2023 (Sundhnúkur)
  • January 2024 (Sundhnúkur)
  • February 2024 (Sundhnúkur)
  • March 2024 (Sundhnúkur)

Activity is subject to change, please consult the  Icelandic Weather Office / Volcano page for more information (look for Reykjanes and Fagradalsfjall volcano activity).

Please note that the volcano is a natural phenomena and we can not guarantee bubbling or flowing lava at the time of your tour. This tour runs all-year with and without volcanic activity.

Get the full experience of the after-effects of the eruption from 2021 at Fagradalsfjall (Geldingadalur) from every angle. The eruption is the longest lasting eruption in the 21 st century in Iceland, from March 19 th , 2021 and officially ending on December 18 th that same year. In August 2022 the eruption started again for a few weeks. After thousands of earthquakes throughout June and July 2023, another eruption began on July 10 th 2023. Though there is great controversy amongst scientists if the volcano has stopped or not.

The lava field that was formed during the eruption completely changed the surrounding landscape. It made small mountains and a valley disappear, taller mountains shrink, and new craters appear setting its mark on the terrain. The craters and lava field are still hot and will take years to cool completely. You will see smoke and steam rising from both the big crater and this newly formed lava field. We circle the lava field and explore it from different angles.

The eruption was a very unpredictable event and the volcanos “behaviour” changed throughout the entire eruption. It started with one small crater and ended with five, the last one being the largest that erupted for the longest time. At the time of the eruption, you would see lava flying into the air, bubbling within the crater, as well as flowing streams of lava.

Please note there is no landing at the eruption site but sightseeing from the air with a great view into the crater and surrounding lava fields. This will give you the best viewing experience.

We feel the way to get the best view is sightseeing from the air onboard our helicopter. We operate helicopters with great visibility for all our guests ( max. 4 passengers per flight = 4 seats means it is automatically a private tour ).

Max seat/weight capacity for shared tours: 120kg. Combined weight restrictions might apply.

STORY ABOUT THE FAGRADALSFJALL VOLCANO ERUPTION

Our guests enjoying the lava show at Fagradalsfjall Volano.

In March 2021, Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula experienced its first volcanic eruption in over 800 years when a fissure opened in the Geldingadalir area. Just weeks before the eruption, over 4,000 earthquakes were registered by the Icelandic MET office, causing hysteria for locals living nearby Grindavík and Keflavík and even felt by residents of the capital Reykjavík.

Despite initial concerns about the impact of the imminent eruption and lava flow on surrounding towns, the eruption was in a perfect place. On March 19, 2021, at 20:45, most people living in Grindavík witnessed the first glow from the volcanic eruption. Luckily, no significant damage was reported, and the area remains a stunning and awe-inspiring sight.

At 2Go Iceland, we quickly responded to this incredible event, organizing the first private tour of the volcanic area just days after the eruption began. As the first company in Iceland to provide private tours to Fagradalsfjall Volcano, we're proud to offer a unique and safe experience led by knowledgeable guides, some of whom work with the Emergency Rescue Squad of Iceland (SAR).

Our local guides are mainly from the Grindavík area, where the volcano is located, and will help you discover all the hidden gems along the way.

You'll witness the stunning beauty of Iceland's volcanic landscape up close and have the opportunity to take in the unique and beautiful surroundings of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark.

Don't miss your chance to witness the stunning beauty of the newest Meradalir volcano, located near the old crater from last year, with 2Go Iceland's private tours.

Best Active Volcano Tours in Iceland – 2024 Eruption UPDATE March

The volcano in Iceland on the Reykjanes peninsula near Grindavik has been active again in 2024. We compiled the selection of the best volcano tours   that are actively operating right now – in 2024 .

Grindavik volcano is currently experiencing periods of “flowing lava” and periods of “pauses,” switching irregularly in between each other. This is expected to continue for a longer time. However, when the eruption with bursting lava is on, volcano helicopter tours are quickly selling out. This is the safest (and often the only) option to see the volcano.

As of March 2024, it’s forbidden to visit the eruption site on your own! The only way to see the active volcano is to take a HELICOPTER ERUPTION TOUR.

You can find the most up-to-date local eruption news stream on the RUV.is website.

Still, watch out for Safety Instructions when visiting the eruption site.

Watch the live stream of the 2024 eruption here:

Volcano Eruption Map

Types of the volcano tours, price of the volcano tours, what is included in the volcano tours, 1. helicopter tour by glacierheli, 2. helicopter tour by atlantsflug, 3. helicopter tours by nordurflug, 4. airplane volcano tour by myflug, 5. cheap volcano hiking tour by david the guide, 6. big group volcano hiking tour by troll expeditions, 7. private volcano hiking tour, 8. volcano transfer from reykjavik, eruption safety tips and current info, what is the hiking time to the eruption site, when is the best time to see the volcano, should i book in advance, is the eruption safe to visit, how long will the eruption last, are the volcano tours worth the money.

We will do our best to update the list and broaden this article, and apologize for any discrepancies which may occur because everything changes really quickly these days.

When in Iceland, be sure also to check out our hand-picked list of the best guided tours in Iceland .

First of all, Sundhnúksgígar is NOT a tourist eruption! It’s big and may be dangerous. The only safe way to see the active volcano right now is to observe it from a safe distance from the bird’s eye viewpoint of a helicopter tour.

The town of Grindavik, the geothermal power plant in Svartsengi, and Blue lagoon are all in real threat because of the fissures and magma under the surface.

Unfortunately, many Grindavik residents have lost and will lose their homes because of this eruption. Please support them as much as you can and be thoughtful when it comes to discussing seeing the volcano. It may be a sensitive matter to many of them.

best active volcano tours iceland 2023

A picture from an amazing volcano helicopter tour

Here we will be adding the most common questions and answers on the 2024 Reykjanes volcano eruption.

No hiking is allowed yet!

Daylight time, as well as nighttime, are both fascinating for experiencing the volcanic eruption. If you have the opportunity, go see the volcano during the day and also during the night!

Book the tours as soon as possible! They can quickly sell out for an entire summer. Iceland does not have as many tour operators and guides as tourists! You may always reschedule or cancel within the cancellation policy of a particular tour company.

Potentially poisonous and dangerous volcanic gases have been detected at the eruption site. Moreover, new and new fissures can open anywhere around the volcano. Everyone hiking around the area has to do it entirely at his own risk! The safest way to experience the active volcano as of now is by helicopter tours .

Nobody can tell for sure how long the eruption will last. The eruption in August 2023 lasted less than three weeks, in 2022 also for about three weeks, and the eruption in 2021 for about 6 months.

Most of the travelers we’ve met say that helicopter and airplane tours of the volcano they took were totally worth the money . Seeing the erupting volcano and flowing lava is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Geldingadalir Volcano Hiking tour

volcano eruption tour iceland

We offer volcano tours to the active volcano in Geldingadalir. The new eruption that started on August 3rd, 2022, is in Merardalir, right next to the previous eruption in 2021.

We run our volcano tours all year, but we can’t promise how long the volcano will erupt or the conditions on your chosen day. If the site is closed by the authorities due to unsafe conditions, we’ll not enter the area. On this day tour, we take you to the designated parking locations and then hike to the crater and lava flow.

For the volcano, we will provide all safety gear, such as gas masks and gas sensors, and in winter, we’ll provide crampons. You need to be wearing good hiking shoes and warm clothes, bring a headlight and water and pack lunch or snacks. You also need to be comfortable walking on uneven and slippery surfaces and up steep hills on the way to the volcano.

The drive to the volcano takes about 45 minutes from a hotel in central Reykjavik. From the parking lot is about a 20 min easy hike to the edge of the lave field from the previous eruption. From there is about a two-hour medium/challenging hike to the crates. Different routes are available depending on the weather and conditions of the day. The distance to the new eruption site and back is about 18 km or 11 miles but can be longer based on available routes.

Before or after we visit the volcano, we might visit Krisuvik geothermal area and lake Kleifarvatn, Krisuvikurbjarg, Selatanga, or other locations based on weather and conditions on the day.

We will provide you with a complete packing list, and recommended clothing and equipment list. Safety briefing and professional guides.

  • We also support press photographers and photography/news projects, with permits to drive/fly in close to the volcano. For commercial projects please shoot us an email at [email protected]

We start with our fast and efficient pick-up routine. Your tour includes free pickup from various approved pickup points in central Reykjavík. Once our group is complete, we will hit the road to the volcanic playground in Reykjanes.

Kleifarvatn lake is the largest on Reykjanes

(This stop is not currently guaranteed on each tour. If the volcano hike takes longer than expected, we may skip this stop)

Kleifarvatn is the biggest lake in the volcanic Reykjanes Peninsula surrounded by mountains that once were formed in eruptions under the ice. Decorated with black basalt beaches and alien rock formations sculpted by the weather elements throughout the centuries. Kleifarvatn is affected by earthquakes and shifting plates that have formed underwater hot springs with bubbling warm water which is an amazing spectacle to see with your own eyes.

After 2 summers, of volcanic eruptions in Reykjanes, all looked peaceful and calm until July 2023, when a series of earthquakes indicated a new eruption was about to take place. And so it proved, when on July 10th, a new fissure opened at Litli Hrutur, to the north of the Meradalir eruption site of 2022.

The hike to a good viewing point takes around 2 hours each way. The route we take can change from day to day depending on wind and weather conditions. There are a couple of short and steep sections, but the way is generally pretty flat.

Your expert guide will make sure this adventure is fun, but more importantly safe and responsible. Depending on the wind direction and advice from the saftey authorities on site, the walking route we take is subject to change.

Orange lighthouse near Grindavik village

The drive through the southern part of the peninsula is beautiful. Thick lava fields meet the Atlantic Ocean creating dramatic scenery all the way to Grindavík fishing village. Grindavík is one of Iceland’s main fishing harbors where everything turns around fishing. It’s the ultimate place to get into the Icelandic fishing culture.

Grindavík is a beautiful Icelandic fishing town with one of the most active harbors in the country. The town’s population, 3300 people, bases its livelihood on fishing or fish-related industry. Grindavík provides about half of Iceland’s salt fish production.

A couple smiling applying silica masks at the Blue Lagoon

All the remarkable sites on the Reykjanes peninsula help you understand the powerful nature of Iceland and the creational beauty of the Blue Lagoon. If you have chosen to end the day in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon you are in for a treat.

The Blue Lagoon, known in Icelandic as Bláa Lónið, is a geothermal spa/resort located on the Reykjanes peninsula. The lagoon itself has been hailed as being one of the modern wonders of the world, growing massively in popularity since it started being used in 1976. It is truly a place you must visit during your time in Iceland.

Your Comfort ticket includes a towel, a free drink in the in-pool bar as well as a silica face mask. Enjoy a leisurely 2-hour visit to the lagoon and leave feeling refreshed and revitalized.

Iceland volcano 2024: Is it safe to travel and is the eruption affecting flights?

The lava flow that crossed Grindavikurvegur, the road to Grindavik in Iceland, Sunday March 17, 2024, a day after the volcanic eruption.

The volcano has erupted for the fourth time in three months and it is the most powerful yet.

A volcano in Iceland has erupted for the fourth time in three months, with this being the most powerful so far.

The eruption began just before 8.30pm local time on Saturday and it is ongoing, but scientists say it is likely to be petering out.

Hundreds of visitors were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon thermal spa, one of Iceland’s top tourist attractions, when the eruption began, national broadcaster RUV said.

The eruption site is a few kilometres northeast of Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people about 50 kilometres southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. Residents of Grindavik were told to leave their homes.

Despite lying just 20 km north of the eruption site, Keflavik International Airport - Iceland's main international airport - remains open and flights are still arriving and departing. The roads around Grindavik are closed, however.

If you are planning on travelling to or from the affected area, here are the full details on advice from European governments and airlines.

How long will Iceland's volcano eruption last?

Iceland’s Meteorological Office says the eruption opened a fissure in the earth about 3 kilometres long between the mountains of Stóra-Skógfell and Hagafell.

The Met Office said Sunday that lava was flowing south and southeast at about 1 kilometre an hour, and might reach the ocean. Defensive barriers have been built to stop it inundating the main road along the peninsula’s southern coast. These are so far holding.

The Grindavik community was previously evacuated in November following a series of earthquakes that opened large cracks in the earth between the town and Sýlingarfell, a small mountain to the north.

Before the recent eruptions, the Svartsengi volcanic system north of Grindavik had been dormant for around 780 years. The volcano is just a few kilometres west of Fagradalsfjall, which was dormant for 6,000 years before flaring to life in March 2021.

Iceland's volcano eruption 'is not a tourist attraction'

Icelandic authorities declared a state of emergency in November after hundreds of small earthquakes shook the Reykjanes Peninsula - the island nation’s most populated region.

“This is not a tourist attraction and you must watch it from a great distance," Vidir Reynisson, head of Iceland’s Civil Protection and Emergency Management, told national broadcaster RUV.

Yet the spectacular natural phenomenon is hard for people to resist. “It’s just [like] something from a movie!” said Robert Donald Forrester III, a tourist from the United States.

For local residents, the emotions are mixed. “The town involved might end up under the lava,” said Ael Kermarec, a French tour guide living in Iceland. "It’s amazing to see but, there's kind of a bittersweet feeling at the moment.”

Have flights to Iceland been cancelled?

Despite concerns over the impact the  eruption will have on travel, nearby Keflavik Airport remains operational. Icelandic airport operator ISAVIA advises passengers to monitor flight information here .

Volcanic eruptions can pose a serious hazard to air travel as ash released into the atmosphere can cause jet engines to fail, damage flight control systems and reduce visibility.

However, Saturday’s eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula isn’t expected to release large amounts of ash into the air.

This image provided by Iceland Civil Defense shows lava erupting from a volcano between Hagafell and Stóri-Skógfell, Iceland, on on Saturday, March 16, 2024.

A major eruption in Iceland in April 2010 caused widespread disruption to air travel between Europe and North America. The quarter of a billion cubic metres of volcanic ash it ejected into the air led to more than 100,000 flights being cancelled over an eight-day period.

Though there had been fears of a repeat, Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted under circumstances that contributed to the immense size of its ash cloud. A glacier on top of it caused meltwater to rapidly cool the lava, creating tiny particles which were launched into the air by the steam produced in the eruption. These were then carried on the wind towards Europe.

In the past three years, three eruptions have taken place on the Reykjanes Peninsula with no impact on air travel.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is also better prepared for a major volcanic ash event.

"In the event of an eruption and development of an ash cloud, the agency will work with other aviation actors to assess the impact for aviation and make recommendations accordingly," a statement on the EASA's website from November reads.

Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Various European foreign offices have advised travellers to stay away from Grindavik and respect local restrictions. They direct travellers to the Icelandic Met Office and Safe Travel Iceland for the latest advice.

The UK's Foreign Office said in updated travel advice for Iceland:

"Iceland is volcanic and seismically active. Recently there have been a series of volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula in south-west Iceland, the latest occurring on 16 March.

Keflavik International Airport and the road to it is unaffected and operating normally.

The capital city, Reykjavik, and the rest of Iceland is not impacted by the eruptions. The likelihood of further eruptions in this location remains high."

They have said that the eruption area is closed until further notice and urge people to respect the closure. However, they have not advised against travel to the country altogether.

Visitors are advised to stay away from the area surrounding the eruption, and to follow the directions and guidance of the local authorities.

Countries have not issued a ‘no-go’ travel warning for Iceland meaning that airlines and holiday companies are operating as normal and travellers who cancel their bookings have no automatic right to a refund.

Iceland's famous Blue Lagoon will now stay closed until 30 November due to ongoing geological unrest.

During a previous eruption Jonathan Frankham, general manager of travel insurance company World Nomads, said: “For those concerned about travel insurance coverage, and whether cancelling a trip is best, we’d advise travellers to exercise common sense and travel wisely," says

"It’s important to note that policies purchased after the earthquakes and consequential volcanic eruption became a 'known event' are unlikely to be covered, but we recommend checking your policy wording for exact details."

He advised tourists to contact their airline or travel provider for assistance and the latest information.

Is the Blue Lagoon open?

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa - one of Iceland’s biggest tourist attractions - was evacuated on Saturday when the volcanic eruption began.

The spa is still closed and will remain so tomorrow (Tuesday), according to the official website .

"Due to a volcanic eruption that commenced at Sundhnúkagígar on March 16, we have evacuated and temporarily closed all our operational units.

Despite these recent events, all our facilities remain in good condition and are surrounded by protective barriers designed to safeguard Blue Lagoon's vital infrastructure against potential lava flows.

We will continue to closely follow the guidelines and recommendations of the authorities, working collaboratively with them to monitor the progression of events."

Blue Lagoon management said that all customers with bookings would be contacted, and anyone wishing to change or cancel their booking could do so on the website.
