12 Best Vineyards And Wineries In Georgia You Must Visit

August 24, 2022 //  by  Southern Trippers

Are you ready to indulge at some of the best wineries in Georgia? The Peach State is known for its use of the muscadine grape to produce wine. With a well-suited climate, the state has an easy time growing muscadines which, while traditionally used for making wines, sauces, and jams, are heavily used for wine in Georgia these days. When you visit The Peach State, you can find a great wine tasting in Georgia that is perfect for you as a traveler. Or, if you are really looking to get the most out of your time spent in wine country, you can take a tour of many of the best Georgia wine tastings.

One of the biggest tour companies is Pop The Cork Wine Tours. Tours leave from Atlanta, Cumming, and Gainesville areas and offer travelers from chauffeured transport, covered wine tasting fees, gourmet lunches, and more. So, which of these amazing wineries will you visit first?

How Many Wineries are there in Georgia?

There are fifty-seven licensed wineries in Georgia. This is nearly double the amount that there was ten years ago. Of course, Georgia can’t compete with the number of wineries in other states like California, which has more than 4,500 wineries! But, nonetheless, Georgia’s wineries are stunning and offer guests remarkable wine tastings. Georgia wine tours are available in abundance today, where you can explore some of the fifty-seven wineries for yourself while exploring The Peach State.

Where Is Georgia Wine Country?

You will find Georgia’s wine country about two hours north of Atlanta. The official wine country spreads through the northern area containing Helen, Sautee Nacoochee, Cleveland, Hiawassee, and Dahlonega. The soil here is amazing for vineyards. In fact, it is often compared to the soil found in Italian wine regions. America’s wine-growing grounds are unique due to the large diversity of grape species that can be grown there. So, where does Georgia wine country play into all of this? Georgia was one of the first states to take part in prohibition. Because of this, the modern wine industry really didn’t take root until the 1980s. Today, Georgia is the national leader in producing wine made from the Muscadine grape.

Best Wineries In Georgia

Crane creek vineyards.

Among the best vineyards in Georgia is the Crane Creek Vineyards in Young Harris. This vineyard likes to express the uniqueness of the area in which they are located through the unique grapes that they make wines from. They have more than twenty acres of vines planted for a variety of grapes, including Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Albarino, and other European varieties. There are also many French-American hybrids and modern hybrids used to grow their fantastic wines. Crane Creek has the goal of growing the finest wines in the region in the most sustainable way possible. While the vineyards are less than two hours away from Atlanta, you will fill like you are a world away in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Sitting high up in the mountains in the shadow of Brasstown Bald, the state’s highest peak, Crane Creek has an incredible tasting room called the Stone House Tasting Room. Walking distance from the Stone House Tasting Room is The Farmhouse Market. This boutique shop offers a selection of gifts and gourmet foods and has a small bar serving glasses of wine and tasting flights. Outside there are lower decks where you can sit and enjoy your wine. They also allow guests to create their own custom gift baskets to purchase, which is just one part of what makes it one of the best wineries in Georgia.

For parents, you may be interested in knowing that the farm holds Tea Parties in the Forest, where you can enjoy tea, bite-sized sandwiches, and desserts in an enchanted forest complete with string lights and party hats. If you choose to stay at the luxurious resort on-site, the legendary guest rooms, private villas, and lavish spa suites are sure to create a lasting memory of your time spent in The Peach State. What puts Chateau Elan on the list of greatest wineries in Georgia? The winery and rooms are impeccable, but what really makes it stand apart from others are the restaurants on site. You will find a French-inspired showpiece, an old-world speakeasy, and a Southern-influenced chophouse, all at Chateau Elan. This winery proudly holds many awards for its wines, including the Best of Show and a double gold medal from the San Francisco Wine Competition. Their private reserve Cabernet Sauvignon also won a gold medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. When arriving at Wolf Mountain for a wine tasting, be sure to arrive as early as possible as it is much less crowded earlier in the day.

Ellijay River Vineyard

Ellijay winery is located on top of the hill near The Barn. Established in 2010, Ellijay River Vineyards is on nearly twenty acres of what used to be used as cropland along the Ellijay River in the North Georgia mountains. Sitting at 1400 feet above sea level, the vineyard is able to grow successfully in the sandy soils on the inside bend of the river. To visit the vineyard, you will need to make an appointment; you can contact the owners by email or phone. Sitting along the wide flat and wide river in the greenery surrounding the water is an absolutely charming place to enjoy your glass of wine. So, grab yourself an apple, artisanal cheese, and a rocking chair by the river, and get ready to enjoy some incredible wine at one of the most relaxing wineries in Georgia.

Habersham Winery

Looking for a winery near Helen? The Habersham Winery is actually in Helen and is one of the oldest and largest wineries in Georgia. At Habersham, you can enjoy tastings seven days a week, gift shopping, and live music when you visit. They have announced that they will now be doing a Creekstone After Hours music series at Creekstone Winery, which is just three minutes away from Habersham. Since 1983, many of the finest wines to come from Georgia have been produced at Habersham. Their commitment to quality begins with a careful monitoring of the vineyards and the grapes hanging from the vines. All of the attention to detail that they take throughout the crushing, fermenting, and aging processes allow for the creation of incredible wines. Their Habersham and Creekstone labels include a variety of vinifera wines and blended wines of vinifera and French-America grapes. They also have a Southern Harvest label which is wine made from those delicious Southern Muscadine grapes. You will find wines there that are fermented in American, Hungarian, and French Oak barrels. The attention to detail and thoughtfulness in every step of the wine-making process makes Habersham one of the best wineries in Georgia.

  • They grow 100% of their own fruit and honey that is used to make wine and mead.
  • If you’re looking for an authentic, down-to-earth worship service, look no further than Jesus ‘n Jeans Worship at The Cottage. Veteran Owned Business

  • Their wine bottle labels are graced with drawings of the Winery’s Donkeys; their donkeys are as much a part of their identity as the old log cabin. In fact, people remember their winery as “the winery with the donkeys”
  • Their sister company is Kaya Vineyards & Winery
  • Frogtown has won four consecutive Double-Gold Medals at the 2016 San Francisco International Wine Competition and the 2017, 2018 and 2019 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
  • Their Vintner, Craig Kritzer made the list of the 100 most influential winemakers in the country and two years ago made the list of the 100 most influential people in the wine industry.
  • Frogtown is special because they grow all of their own fruit, make all of their own wine and bottle it on site.
  • Kaya’s Winery and Tasting Room are built atop a ridge that is 1600 feet above elevation and offers the most exquisite panoramic mountain view in North Georgia. The Tasting Room features twelve-foot windows, Edison light bulbs, and reclaimed wood, making the combination of Kaya and the Appalachian Mountains a retreat. Enjoy the view on their two-thousand square-foot covered deck with live music in the warmer seasons, and more importantly, some wine.
  • They offer wine hikes and have beautiful sunset views over the vineyard.
  • They are very proud of and work very hard to be one of the very few 100% Estate grown wineries in Georgia.
  • Featured in June 2021 edition of Southern Living Magazine.

  • Want to make your own wine label to give as a gift or commemorate a special occasion? They can do that. Holiday messages, wedding gifts, photos, etc. Contact them and they will work with you to put together a custom wine label! Minimum order quantity is 1 case (12 bottles)

Sautee Nacoochee

  • After nearly 40 years of making award winning wines in Georgia, the Habersham Winery Family has expanded. Habersham’s popular, premium Creekstone label now has its own winery.
  • At Sylvan Valley Lodge and Cellars, expect nothing less – out of the ordinary, above and beyond, unique and tantalizing – eccentric to say the least. After all, standing out is what they do best.

Clarkesville

  • Get out and enjoy these beautiful mountains. They have a few trails that make for easy walking or spend some time walking through the vineyard. They have two basic loops that are fit for general use, the Eastern Creek Loop and the Spring House Loop. People can also camp at the vineyard (only one group per night).
  • They offer wine tours — that include a stay at their resort, wine tasting at multiple wineries, spa treatments, and more!

Danielsville

  • They offer accommodations (AirBnB) as well as a women’s night out and a women’s line-dancing class.
  • The vineyard’s name came from the Bible and tells the story of Moses sending 12 spies to investigate the Promised Land. While there, they discovered grapes so large that it took 2 men just to carry one cluster. They brought them back on a staff along with figs and other fruit to show off their bounty.
  • We went for a wine tasting at 12 Spies Vineyards. We did the 10 tastes for $15 and hubby and I split it. My favorite was the sangria; it’s a blend of 5 different wines.
  • Cornhole, Bocce Ball, Soccer, & Disc Golf gear is available for patrons to use.
  • Tiger Mountain Vineyards has won more than 250 national & international awards since 2001.
  • Three of their wines have won INDY (Indy International Wine Competition) medals—Ole Blue, Blanc du Bois, and 3 Mile White.

Ball Ground

  • Their gallery, Wildcat on a Wing, showcases an assortment of handmade American artwork, from artists across the United States. Unique pieces that set your home apart, to gifts that will make a hit, the assortment is ever changing.
  • You can have an intimate Wedding in the Blue Ridge Tree House (their AirBnB).
  • It is the only apple orchard in Georgia that can say they grow, press, ferment, and bottle their own products.

winery tours in georgia

  • You are welcome to bring a picnic.  Follow them on the socials for special events throughout the year, such as concerts in the Amphitheater, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Independence Day events, Texas Dance Hall party, Memorial Day Songwriter’s Festival, Fundraising Events and more.
  • First vineyard & winery in Gilmer County.
  • Wine tastings on the River
  • Veteran-owned business
  • They offer a relaxing environment that is both kid-friendly and pet-friendly.
  • They have a 180 degree view of the beautiful mountains at their winery.
  • In their research of the AT, they found that hikers build “cairns” out of rocks and stones to alert other hikers on the trail of potential resources or danger.  Thus their winery pays honor to the hikers that have crossed over the trails on or around our property.  The idea of a trail marker fits right in line with the name of their, on-site, bed and breakfast.  Bent Tree Lodge was named in honor of the Cherokee and Seminole Indians whom inhabited this property before them.  They bent trees in our community as trail indicators similar in meaning to the cairn.
  • There are goats on the farm and one day after one of those long, hard days of vine work, the couple climbed to the top of the mountain and felt like fainting. From there the name, Fainting Goat, was born.
  • They proudly grow, produce and bottle all of their own wine.
  • Worked with Peterson (winemaker at Monteluce), they turned out Georgia’s first, commercial 500-gallon batch of local mead, Montaluce’s sparkling mead titled “Wildflower.”
  • The structure that houses their Tasting Barn is over 100-years-old and truly began as a barn. It has been in their family since the late 1950s.
  • Each one of their wines is named for something meaningful to them within Fannin County, where they live and love.
  • Their grapevines capture the sun, and this continues throughout the winemaking process in their solar-powered winery, so there is lots of sunshine in every bottle of Serenberry wine.
  • The biggest difference between Georgia Winery and other wines at any wine shop, besides producing wines made from their local grape-Muscadine, is that they produce Sweet wines.  Sweet wines that are not tied to “dinner” but can be served anytime, anywhere.  They try to get their wines to taste like the fruit itself- not like alcohol.
  • Best wine-tasting room winner of 2022 by Reader’s Choice, USA Today

Talking Rock

  • In 1921, at the age of 25, Stephan Meichtry traveled to America from the canton of Valais, Switzerland with only a suitcase and an adventure for life.  He settled in Maspeth, New York, where he would later raise his two children and further develop his passion for wine. It is believed that when he came to America, he brought his own root stock from Switzerland and grew the vines he used for his lifelong wine-making. A stock from these same vines is now planted at Chateau Meichtry Vineyard.
  • They broke ground in 2019 with the first vines planted in 2020. Their amazing tasting room/winery was completed in 2021/2022.  Giving you some of the best views North Georgia has to offer.
  • WHAT’S INCLUDED? $150 rental fee (Paid for or tab started the day of) – An automatic 20% gratuity will be added.
  • Two bottles of wine and 1 large charcuterie board. Seats 6-8. Two Hour Time Slot Limits.

winery tours in georgia

  • Lawn chairs, picnic blankets and pop up tents are allowed to be used on the vineyard’s grounds; this is most popular during our live music events on the weekends.
  • The winery and resort are located on a beautiful 3,500 acres; when you visit, you will feel like you are in the middle of France at a beautiful chateau
  • Their website has some recipes that show their recommended wine pairings.
  • Cloudland Vineyards sits on the centerline of the Eastern Continental Divide just above the Chattahoochee River Valley and the quaint town of Buford
  • Forsyth County’s First Winery
  • The Summerour family started the vineyard in 2017, but the Tasting Room opened its doors in April 2021. It is family owned and operated, with even two of their children working in the Tasting Room. The owner and vintner, Jason Summerour, is a huge fan of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and other rat pack members so he names each of his wines after a different one of their songs. I.e. Fly Me To The Moon, Nice N Easy, Drinking Again, & Summer Wind.
  • Specialized cheeses and meats are available for purchase and pair perfectly with the venue’s selection of wines.
  • It is the only farm winery in Fulton County and only founding winery in Georgia that was started by a woman.
  • Makes mead and honey as well. Winery has been open since 2002. Veteran owned business.
  • Little Vine Vineyards and Winery in Villa Rica, Carroll County, GA is bringing back a tradition of fine wines once produced in Western Georgia in the 1890’s. This area of the state at one time was a major vineyard and winery center with some 20,000 acres planted in bunch grapes before prohibition. The grapes at Little Vine Vineyards are the first commercial wine grapes planted in West Central Georgia since 1907 and the winery is the first constructed here in over 100 years.
  • Wolf Creek Planation is Sumter’s County first and only winery specializing in Muscadine Wine.
  • Sitting on the banks of an isolated pond was a still, turning out peach brandy to provide comfort, relaxation, and escape for exhausted Confederate soldier, thus the name Still Pond. What started out as a location for weary Confederate troops to gain a little comfort with a bottle of peach brandy, has now become one of the largest commercial vineyards in Georgia.
  • Watermelon Creek Vineyard features Georgia Grown muscadine wines and edibles, local artisan crafts and creations, and events throughout the year. They are a full-service Georgia Farm Winery.
  • At Butterducks Winery, you will enjoy the relaxed southern charm of a perfect getaway, just a short drive from Savannah, Georgia.  Their dedication to winemaking shows that they are very passionate about the task of producing fine wines for your enjoyment.  They are genuinely devoted to providing you with an excellent wine experience!
  • From the winding road to the ceremony sites and all stops in between, Gin Creek Vineyards is truly “An Unforgettable Southern Experience.”

Jeffersonville

  • Veteran Owned Business
  • Tilford Winery is the only Muscadine Winery within the Southeastern Region of North America to make DRY, SWEET & SEMI-SWEET Organic wines.
  • When you visit this winery, be sure to head north a little to enjoy a nice meal in Macon
  • They offer True Fruit Wines – Not Flavored Grape Wines
  • Originally started as produce farm and still a majority of their grapes go to the produce industry; the remaining grapes are used for wine making.  They grow about 80 tons of grapes a year.

Thomasville

  • They are a third-generation farming family making award-winning small-batch wines. They love what they do—from start to finish—right here in the Southwest Georgia sunshine.

Warm Springs

  • Winemaking at The Warm Springs Winery is a family endeavor of first generation winemakers. We are involved in each step of the process, from growing the fruit to bottling our wine
  • With over 800 acres of muscadines on their six-generation family farm, Paulk Vineyards is the largest muscadine vineyard in the world! Theyalso will host the fourth annual South Georgia Wine Festival on March 11, 2023, as well as the fourth annual Georgia Muscadine Festival on September 2, 2023. More information on those events can be found at www.southgeorgiawinefestival.com and www.georgiamuscadinesfestival.com.

Upper Hiawassee

Blairsville.

  • Brand NEW winery; opening Jan 13, 2023
  • Odom Springs Vineyards is located at 637 Odom Road, Blairsville, GA. The owner and her daughter were the ones working the bar the day we visited; they were both very kind and attentive to all the visitors. We both got wine flights and a cheeseboard to share since we skipped lunch.
  • The Odom family has farmed these hills for years, and it is their desire to continue this tradition by producing outstanding wines from the grapes grown in the uniquely fertile soils of the ancient Appalachian Mountains.
  • Their vineyards and farm winery are a family operation that involves every member of the Lander family and Paradise Hills family. Each member is contributing to every aspect and stage of the process… from Grapes to Glass. Grapes to Glass (winemaking) is a process that they believe is an evolving, forever-learning craft that we are passionate to endeavor.

Of course he does not do the wine tastings; he is your designated driver. This might not be your cup of tea, if you want time alone. I am sure he would oblige, but he has so much knowledge about the wineries and the area.
  • When we toured with Jason, he took a longer route to the first winery, so that we could enjoy the fall colors when we toured with him last fall. Our first stop was Habersham Winery.  Our next stop was lunch; we stopped at Clyde’s in Cleveland for lunch. Then we went to Cavender Creek Winery, the Cottage Winery and last to Yonah Mountain Winery.
  • The Cottage Winery was our favorite for this tour, as far as the wines and views; it was also the most warm and inviting.

5 SWEET Winery Tours in Georgia (2024)

Would you believe me if I told you that Georgia is one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world with a history dating back more than 8,000 years? Well, best you do because archeological findings, including old wine-making vessels and other evidence, verify this bold yet true statement.

While Georgia wine has somewhat flown under the radar, it has caught the attention of the international wine market in recent years.

With a total production of around 1.8 million hectoliters, wine tourism in Georgia is ever-growing, with its culture, gastronomy, and of course, its wine history all being highly attractive to travelers.

Where do I fit in?

Well, I’m here to help sort through the best winery tours in Georgia for your convenience. These tours are conducted by knowledgeable locals who know the regions and their wines backwards – the perfect way to discover both in a fun, wine-fueled day.

So, let’s dive in!

What is a Vineyard Tour?

Wine regions of georgia, the best georgia winery tours, final thoughts on georgia wine tours.

Right, before we get into the crux of the article, it’s important to clarify a couple of things. The most important is defining what exactly a vineyard tour is. Now, you might be thinking to yourself that it’s merely a walk through the vineyards, but that couldn’t be further from the truth!

a woman wallking through a lane of a georgia vineyard while holding a glass of wine

While most vineyard tours do include a vineyards walk, that’s only the tip of the iceberg – they encompass so much more! A winery tour might be a better way to describe the day as that’s essentially what you’ll be doing.

This might include meeting the winemaker and tasting room staff, touring the cellar and barrel rooms, tasting wines out of the tanks, and learning all about the history of the estate. You will, of course, also get to taste the wines in either a formal or informal setting – the highlight of the day.

The tours all usually include transport too, so you won’t need to worry about drinking and driving – a big no-no. It also allows you to relax and enjoy the day without having to nominate a member of your group to be the designated driver. Besides, who wants to watch their friends or family having fun without being able to participate?

map of Georgia

The second important thing that needs to be addressed before jumping into the best winery tours in Georgia are the country’s wine regions. Now, a trip to Georgia is pretty blessed when it comes to wine regions and they are all rather unique. Each has its own specialties and focuses on particular varietals or production techniques.

However, one thing is for certain – no matter where you are in the country, there’s always going to be an amazing vineyard close by. Phew!

Let’s now take a look at the most significant wine regions in Georgia.

wine sitting on a barrel in georgia Kakheti

Kakheti, found in the easternmost stretches of Georgia, is arguably the most important wine region in the country. Almost three-quarters of all grapes grown in Georgia come from the Kakheti region and it’s also responsible for some of the country’s highest quality grapes. You can even argue that it’s home to the best wine in the entire Caucasus region !

There are a large number of microclimates littered throughout Kakheti, with the most significant being found along the Alazani River. Conditions range from mild and tropical to arid, with an overall ample amount of rainfall too.

The predominant soil type found in Kakheti is called “cinnamonic”, a somewhat hybrid soil type comprised of sandy, reddish, calcareous clays with high iron content. It is in these soils that red varietals such as Saperavi and Cabernet Sauvignon, and white varietals such as Kakhuri Mtsvani and Rkatsiteli, thrive.

georgia Imereti

The Imereti region is found in western Georgia along the upper areas of the Rioni River. It is by far the most diverse wine-growing region with a range of mesoclimates and altitudes. It is bordered by the Meskheti Mountains, the Caucasus Ridge, the Likha Ridge, and the Tskhenistskali River, with altitudes ranging from 50 – 500 meters above sea level.

Generally speaking, the winters are cold and wet and the summers are hot and dry allowing full phenolic ripeness to occur. Stony loams with a high calcium carbonate content are commonly found and are rich in limestone, a viticulturist’s dream. The limestone facilitates the production of white grape varietals and lends a certain minerality to the wines.

White grapes rule supreme in Imereti, with Tsitska and Tsolikouri being the most popular. They are generally blended together, much like Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon in Bordeaux. While red wine production is far inferior, it still exists with Otskhanuri-Sapere and Rko dominating the plantings.

fall foliage seen in Kartli where you'll find some of the best wineries

The Kartli region is found in central Georgia to the east of the Kakheti region. While Kakheti completely overshadows the Kartli region in sheer magnitude, Kartli is going through a revival with many of the old vines being resurrected. Though traditional wine-making methods are still employed, there is also a drive towards what you’d typically ysee while traveling around Europe , like sparkling wines.

The region can be divided into three sub-zones – Kvemo (Lower) Kartli, Shida (Inner) Kartli, and Mtskheta-Mtianeti. They typically all display similar soil types, with loose sandstone being the most common. Calcareous clays and loams can also be found in more isolated quantities throughout Kartli.

The most famous wine from Kartli is called Atenuri – a naturally sparkling wine similar to Methode Ancestrale, made from the Goruli Mtsvane and Chinuri grapes. Other popular native varietals include Saperavi, Takveri, Shavkapito, and Chinuri.

Racha-Lechkhumi

a bir'ds eye view of the lush green georgia Racha-Lechkhumi vineyard

In contrast to the Kakheti region, Racha-Lechkhumi is one of the smallest wine regions in Georgia, nestled between the slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountains and the Imereti region. With cold winters and hot, dry summers, Racha-Lechkhumi experiences relatively high humidity levels. Vineyards are generally planted with thin canopies and at low densities to prevent the detrimental effects of fungal rot.

As a result of the sunny climatic conditions present in the region, the resulting wines are generally a bit sweeter than others. The predominant white wine varietals that are planted in Racha-Lechkhumi all, funnily enough, begin with a ‘T’ – Tsolikouri aka Bazaleturi, Tetra, and Tsitska. On the red grape front, the most commonly planted varietals include Saperavi, Usakhelauri, Orbeluri Odzhaleshi, Alexandrouli, and Mujuretuli aka Keduretuli.

One of the most famous wines from Racha-Lechkhumi comes from a sub-region called Khvanchakara. The area produces semi-sweet wines from a combination of the Mujuretuli and Alexandrouli grapes.

Black Sea Coast

ga small wooden house sitting within a lush green georgia adjara vineyard

Last but not least is the Black Sea Coast region, located to the extreme west of the country and best known for its “joyful” wines. Many sub-regions make up the area, including Abkhazia, Guria, Samegrelo, and Adjara.

The vineyards found in the Black Sea Coast area are generally planted at much lower altitudes (2 – 4 meters above sea level) and are much more sub-tropical. There is also a lot more humidity experienced around the coastal regions, resulting in crisp and refreshing wines that are light in body.

The Adjara region is at the forefront of trying to restore and revitalize the old, native grape varietals that are found in the area. They strive to save these native varietals so that one day they will be the driving force behind the wines in the region. These include Klarjuli, Mekrenchkhi, Burdzghala, Brola, Khopaturi, Kviristava, and Shvashura, to name a few.

Aether Backpack

We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.

Now, as one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world, you would expect the number of Georgian wineries to be mind-blasting. However, this isn’t necessarily the case, and while there are more than 100,000 family wineries, the number of commercial Georgian wineries sits at just over 1,000.

This is still overwhelming, nonetheless, but luckily there’s light at the end of the tunnel – not all wineries offer tours and tastings! There are still a shed load to choose from though. Luckily, I’m here to guide and advise you after putting in the hard yards and scouring through all the tours on offer.

So, let’s take a look at some of the top Georgia winery tours out there. And the best part is, as the cost of living in Georgia is pretty low, these wine tours are hella’ affordable:

Kakheti Wine Tour

Kakheti Wine Tour georgia gyg

Kicking things off for the best Georgia winery tours is a tour to the most famous region in the country, Kakheti. Now, there’s a whole lot more to Georgia than just wine. In fact, to not explore the cultural side of the country would be an injustice.

Luckily, this Kakheti wine tour ticks both boxes!

The tour starts at the Avlabari metro station in Tbilisi after which you will head to the village of Badiauri for a sampling of fresh Georgian bread and cheese at a local bakery. It’s then off to the Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino and “The City of Love,” Sighnaghi. You can then enjoy some free time and grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant.

Next up is the largest winery in Georgia, Khareba. You will explore their underground wine tunnels and galleries, learn about Georgian wine production and then taste their wines. Once finished, you will be taken to the second winery for the day, Corporation Kindzmarauli , for a vineyards tour and a tasting of four wines.

Imereti Wine Tour

Imereti Wine Tour georgia gyg

Next up is a vineyard visit to the picturesque Imeretian countryside, departing from Kutaisi. The first stop is at the Bagrati Cathedral for a quick culture and history lesson. It’s then on to the good part – a winery visit at the Nikoladze Wine House . The tasting is comprised of two to three white wines, a red wine, and even a couple of local vodka-like spirits called Chacha.

Unlike many of the winery tours on the market, this tour is special as the winery has been in the family for hundreds of years. Instead of modern production methods and equipment, they have opted to keep it traditional. So, you will get to see the unique production methods – there’s nothing quite like making wine underground in clay Qvevri’s!

Kartli Wine Tour

Kartli Wine Tour viator

The next recommendation for winery tours in Georgia is this full-day trip to the Kartli region, starting with a pickup near your stay in Tbilisi . The tour departs from the Marriot Courtyard Hotel and takes guests from the city center straight into the heart of Kartli wine country.

The day begins with a bang at the first winery where you will taste some of their top wines as you learn all about the mighty Qvevri. There is a traditional Georgian lunch included in the tour, perfectly placed between the two winery visits.

After lunch, it’s off to the second winery of the day to learn more about the history, cellar practices, and of course, to taste more wine. Just when you thought it was time to call it a day, there’s one more surprise in store – a visit to the Jvari Monastery. I mean, what’s a day out in a Georgian wine region without a bit of culture and history thrown into the mix?

Racha-Lechkhumi Wine Tour

Racha-Lechkhumi Wine Tour gyg

This is no ordinary winery tour. It’s not 5 hours, not 11 hours, it’s a full 2-day trip! Departing from Tbilisi, you will explore the Racha region in western Georgia, starting at Shovi. You’ll get to see caves, castles, and other historical buildings, including Nikortsminda’s famous cathedral.

After descending into the caves, it’s time to come back above ground to discover the picturesque Shaori Lake and its surroundings. Then, to top it off, the real reason why we’re all here – a traditional local wine tasting as well as some Georgian cuisine. All food, drink, and accommodations are provided too, so you just need to show up!

Black Sea Coast Wine Tour

Black Sea Coast Wine Tour georgia gyg

Rounding off the list is a visit to the Black Sea Coast region for a winery tour in the republic of Adjara. The region has a rich, traditional wine-making history with a whole bunch of unique local varieties. It’s only an hour long so it’s the perfect morning or afternoon activity, especially if you’re pressed for time.

You will taste a selection of both red and white wines that I promise you’ll love! You’ll also learn about the traditional Qvevri but trust me – this tour does more than just scratch the surface. You will be educated by a local host who will tell you all about the regional terroir, explain the different local grape varietals, and give you an insight into Georgia’s wine culture.

Worry Less With Good Insurance

Don’t forget to grab some reliable travel insurance before heading off to a Georgia vineyard!

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

That, unfortunately, brings us to the end of the best Georgia winery tours. I hope you’re now inspired to discover the Georgian wineries and their ancient wine-making practices.

With wine tourism on an upward trajectory, Georgia varietals are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. So, strike while the iron is hot and get exploring before it becomes over-commercialized and busy. After all, a Qvevri a day keeps the doctor away!

Ultimate Guide to Georgian Wine Country: Discover the Best of Kakheti and Tbilisi

View of Georgian Wine Country in Europe with vineyards and mountains in the background

Travel to the Cradle of Wine – The Republic of Georgia

While wine has carved its niche in the annals of global history and is an integral component of numerous cultures worldwide, its roots are deeply embedded in one specific locale: the Republic of Georgia. This nation doesn’t just share a bond with wine; it is revered as its birthplace. Archaeological discoveries have consistently identified the South Caucasus region of Georgia as the site of the earliest known wine production, a practice dating back to 6,000 BC.

This means Georgia’s winemaking heritage spans over 8,000 years, distinguished by its traditional Qvevri winemaking method, a technique so unique that it has earned the accolade of a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage . Yet, beyond the accolades and history, it’s the tangible elements—the hospitable people, the rich culinary landscape, and the distinctively Georgian wines—that truly make a journey to the Republic of Georgia an enriching and memorable experience.

Georgian Wine Production

Georgia’s winemaking heritage is deeply rooted in its four primary wine-producing regions: Kakheti, Imereti, Kartli, and Racha. The country includes 29 Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) and a rich diversity of indigenous grape varieties, numbering over 525, with 45 of these varieties actively cultivated in commercial viticulture. Among these, approximately 75% are white grape varieties, and 25% are black (red) grape varieties.

While modern methods like stainless steel and oak aging are employed, Georgia is renowned for its traditional use of Qvevri, large clay vessels, for wine fermentation and aging. A unique aspect of Georgian wine production involves the method of fermenting white grapes in Qvevri along with their seeds, skins, and occasionally stems. This process imparts an amber hue to the wine, often referred to as ‘amber wine’ or ‘orange wine’ due to its distinct color and rich, tannic profile. These amber wines, celebrated for their depth of flavor and historical significance, are a source of immense pride in Georgian viticulture.

Amber or orange wines are essentially white wines made using a method more akin to red wine production, where the grape skins are left in contact with the juice for an extended period, resulting in a wine with a deep amber or orange hue, a fuller body, and a unique flavor profile that distinguishes it from traditional white wines. You can learn more about orange wine production here .

The #WinesofGeorgia

Here are some of the main Georgian wines and the grape varieties involved in their production:

Saperavi: This is arguably the most famous red wine from Georgia. Made from the Saperavi grape, which is a teinturier variety (both skin and flesh are red), it produces deeply colored, full-bodied wines with bold flavors and high tannin content.

Rkatsiteli: One of the oldest grape varieties, Rkatsiteli produces a highly acidic and versatile white wine. This wine can range from crisp and light to rich and full-bodied, depending on the production method, including the traditional Qvevri method.

Mtsvane Kakhuri: Often simply known as Mtsvane, this grape produces elegant and aromatic white wines. These wines typically have floral and fruity notes, with a balanced acidity that makes them quite refreshing.

Tsinandali: This is a dry white wine blend, primarily made from Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane grapes. Tsinandali is known for its straw color, fruity aroma, and a well-balanced, sophisticated flavor profile.

Kindzmarauli: A semi-sweet red wine primarily made from the Saperavi grape. Kindzmarauli stands out for its natural sweetness balanced with acidity, deep purple color, and fruity notes.

Khvanchkara: Another popular semi-sweet red wine, Khvanchkara is a blend of the Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties. It is known for its ruby color, floral aroma, and raspberry notes.

Georgian Food

Georgian cuisine, a vibrant blend of flavors and techniques, has evolved over the centuries under the influence of various cultures, including Mediterranean, Greek, Persian, and Turkish culinary traditions. Each region within Georgia has its own unique culinary style and preparation methods, reflecting the diverse landscape and cultural influences of the country.

Agriculturally rich, Georgia has traditionally placed a strong emphasis on vegetarian dishes, with meat historically being a luxury reserved for special occasions. In contemporary Georgian cuisine, however, there is a more balanced incorporation of meats alongside staple ingredients like breads, cheeses, walnuts, and fresh tomatoes. Notably, walnuts, a key ingredient found in many Georgian recipes, highlight the country’s status as a significant walnut producer. The cuisine’s diversity and the use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients like walnuts, are central to its appeal and uniqueness.

Traditional Georgian Cuisine

Some popular Georgian dishes include:

Khachapuri – This beloved Georgian staple is essentially a cheese-filled bread, but it’s much more than that. Each region has its own variation, ranging from a simple cheese-topped bread to elaborate versions with added ingredients like egg and butter.

Puri – This is a type of Georgian bread, traditionally baked in a toné, a deep, circular clay oven. The bread has a unique texture and flavor, partly due to the distinctive baking method, which imparts a smoky, earthy aroma.

Pkhali – Often served as an appetizer, Pkhali is a kind of vegetable pâté, combining finely chopped and cooked vegetables (like spinach or beets) with a rich walnut paste, seasoned with garlic, herbs, and spices. It’s a colorful and flavorful showcase of Georgia’s love for walnuts.

Badrijani Nigvzit – This dish features tender strips of roasted eggplant (badrijan) wrapped around a savory, spiced walnut paste. It’s a delightful combination of textures and flavors, balancing the softness of the eggplant with the richness of the nuts.

Ajapsandali – A hearty and spicy Georgian eggplant stew, Ajapsandali is a medley of vegetables including eggplants, tomatoes, bell peppers, and onions, often seasoned with fragrant herbs. It’s a vibrant and nourishing dish, perfect for those who love robust flavors.

Khinkali – These are Georgian dumplings, notable for their twisted, knob-like shape. Typically filled with meat, cheese, or mushrooms, and a hot broth, Khinkali are a culinary delight, served boiled or steamed. They are a true test of one’s eating skills; the trick is to consume them without spilling the savory broth inside.

Churchkhela – Often referred to as Georgian candy, Churchkhela is a traditional sweet made by stringing walnuts together and dipping them in thickened grape must mixed with flour. This results in a candle-shaped treat that’s chewy, nutty, and satisfyingly sweet, often found hanging in markets and roadside stalls.

How To Get To Georgia

The Republic of Georgia is located at the juncture of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Part of the Caucasus region, it is bordered by the Black Sea to the west, Russia to the north and northeast, Turkey to the southwest, Armenia to the south, and Azerbaijan to the southeast. A stop on the Silk Road, Georgia has been a convergence of civilizations over the centuries until becoming part of the Soviet Union. It gained its independence in 1991 but spent the next decade dealing with political and social unrest. Fortunately, since 2008, Georgia has rapidly expanded for tourism and today is one of the safest countries in Europe.

To get to Georgia, the best airport to fly into is in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. If you want to travel around Georgia into the wine regions, it is very safe to travel on your own by renting a car (you can browse current flight and rental car rates here on Kayak ). However, for travelers in Georgia, private transportation often proves to be the most convenient option. This is partly because the Georgian language, which has its own unique alphabet, is predominantly spoken throughout the country. While many locals are fluent in Russian, a legacy of Georgia’s historical ties with Russia, English is less commonly spoken, especially outside of Tbilisi and key tourist areas. However, visitors will find that the warmth and hospitality of the Georgian people often bridge the language barrier effectively. Assistance from a guide can further enhance the travel experience, ensuring smooth communication and a deeper understanding of the local culture and places.

Tbilisi aerial view

Tbilisi, as Georgia’s capital and its largest city, holds significant historical and cultural importance. The city is divided by the Kura River, known in Georgia as the Mtkvari River, which originates in Turkey and flows to the Caspian Sea. Central to Tbilisi’s charm is the historic Old Tbilisi area, dating back to the Middle Ages, which forms the core of the city. Additionally, parts of the city reflect 18th-century Georgian architecture.

Since gaining independence, Tbilisi has seen the development of modern architectural structures. This includes key government buildings like the President’s House and the Public House, as well as cultural venues like the Concert Hall, all located along the river’s edge. The Bridge of Peace, a contemporary pedestrian bridge made of steel and glass, spans the Mtkvari River and links the historic Old Town with newer parts of the city.

What to Do in Tbilisi

Exploring tbilisi.

Most of Tbilisi’s notable attractions are concentrated in Old Tbilisi, making it an ideal area for a walking tour, whether self-guided or with a guide . The tour can start at Freedom Square, a central and historically significant location in the city. This square, once known as Lenin Square during the Soviet era, now features a striking golden statue of St. George slaying a dragon, symbolizing the nation’s transformation.

As you stroll through the cobblestone streets of Old Tbilisi, you’ll notice a diverse mixture of architectural styles, with many houses charmingly covered in vines. The neighborhood highlights Tbilisi’s historical role as a significant hub on the Silk Road, evident in the close proximity of religious and cultural sites representing various faiths and communities. These include Armenian, Georgian Orthodox, Jewish, and Catholic places of worship, reflecting the city’s rich multicultural heritage influenced by the myriad of traders and travelers who passed through over centuries.

Two exceptional ways to see the city are from the water and from up high. By boat, sail down the Kura River and under the Bridge of Peace for a unique perspective of Tbilisi. Pass by cliffs, the 13th-century Metekhi church, the Royal Baths, and Rike Park. There are many boat companies by the river offering 30-minute boat tours day and night.

For an aerial view, take the Aerial Tramway located beside Rike Park. The tram can be taken during day or night. It travels from one side of the river to the other, with the Bridge of Peace always in view. From the top, in addition to breathtaking views, you can visit the Narikala Fortress as well as the Botanical Garden. Locally guided tours including the cable car can be arranged ahead of time.

Starting from the summit reached by the tram, descend the hill to reach the Leghvtakhevi Gorge, home to a notable waterfall. This natural feature is integral to Tbilisi’s history, being the source of the city’s famed sulfur waters. Tbilisi’s very name originates from the local word for “warm place,” a nod to these therapeutic waters. In the Abanotubani neighborhood of Old Tbilisi, you’ll find a concentration of sulfur bathhouses. Drawing inspiration from Persian and Turkish bath traditions, these bathhouses offer a serene escape, inviting #Winetravelers to unwind in the warm, healing embrace of the sulfuric waters.

Wine in Tbilisi

Tbilisi wine museum

A glimpse of what you can expect at the Tbilisi Wine Museum. Images courtesy Allison Levine .

To learn about the 8000-year history of Georgian winemaking, visit the Tbilisi Wine Museum (8 Sioni St, Tbilisi, Georgia) housed in a 17 th -century building that sits over a preserved underground city. The museum is below the MtKvari River and includes artifacts that have been discovered during archaeological excavations.

When ready to enjoy Georgian wine, head to Vino Underground near Freedom Square (15 Galaktion Tabidze St, Tbilisi, Georgia). Opened in 2011, it was the first wine bar and retail store for natural wine in Georgia. Owned by six of Georgia’s most well-known natural wine producers, including American-born John Wurdeman, Vino Underground is in a small, brick-lined cellar. Featuring small-production, family-owned wines, there are more than 200 options to try. Enjoy a glass at the bar or take a few bottles home.

Next door to Vino Underground is the Bitadze Tea Shop & Museum , a tiny museum founded by father and son Shota and George Bitadze.

Tea was introduced to Georgia in the early 19th century. The first instance of tea cultivation in Georgia dates back to 1809 when Prince Mamia V Gurieli began growing Camellia Sinensis, the tea plant, in his botanical garden. However, it was in 1847 that Prince Miha Eristavi established the first tea plantation in Georgia after smuggling tea seeds from China. This event is often marked as the birth year of Georgian tea and the beginning of tea culture in the region.

The first tea bushes in Georgia were planted in 1845 in western Georgia, but significant development in the tea industry began towards the end of the 19th century under the Russian Empire, which showed interest in cultivating the tea industry in Georgia. This period saw the engagement of experts to develop tea plantations in the country. The first tea factory in Georgia was open from 1893 to 1925 and was run by a Chinese tea master. During Soviet rule, tea was manufactured but production was abandoned after the Soviet collapse.

In 2006, the Georgian Organic Tea Producers Association was created. It began with educating producers about new technology and now they send farmers to study in tea-producing countries such as China. Stop by the Bitadze Tea Museum before or after a stop at Underground Vino to purchase some Georgian black, green, and herbal teas. In addition to selling Georgian tea, they offer a tea-tasting experience and can also arrange visits to tea plantations in Georgia.

One hour away from Tbilisi is the Kakheti wine region, the most famous wine region in Georgia. It consists of eight districts: Gurjaani, Qvarelli, Sagarejo, Dedoplistsqaro, Signangi, Lagodekhi, Akhmeta, and Telavi, its capital. Wine is likewise very important in Kakheti and symbols of the beverage can be found everywhere. Grapes are carved into old stone structures and Qvevri are found in the fountains throughout the squares and villages of the region.

Saperavi vineyard in Georgia

Of the 48,000 hectares of vineyards in Georgia, 33,000 hectares are located in Kakheti. 80% of the vineyards in Georgia are in Kakheti and 20 of the 29 PDOs are also found in this region. The principal white grapes in Kakheti are Rkatsiteli , Mtsvana Kakhuri, Kisi, and Khikhvi. The primary red grape is Saperavi. Kakheti has a continental climate with rich diverse soils called “cinnamomic” as they consist of sandy, reddish, calcareous clays. The grapes are all hand-picked and there is no irrigation.

Sighnaghi, perched atop a hill, offers an eye-opening panoramic view of the Alazani Valley with the majestic Caucasus mountains in the backdrop. The town’s name, derived from the Turkish “signak” meaning shelter, reflects its historical role as a bastion against invasions, established in the 18th century. Encircling the town is an impressive four-kilometer fortress wall, complete with towers and gates, cascading down the hills, reminiscent of a miniature Great Wall of China. This wall is not just a historical relic; visitors can actually walk along it.

Often celebrated as Georgia’s city of love, Sighnaghi charms with its well-preserved cobblestone streets and architecture dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Dotting these streets are notable establishments like Pheasant’s Tears and Orko’s Wines.

Pheasant’s Tears , set in a building that’s over 300 years old, enjoys a reputation as one of Georgia’s finest dining establishments. It was opened by John Wurdeman, an American artist who discovered Georgia during his art studies in Moscow. Wurdeman has played a pivotal role in both preserving and revitalizing Georgia’s ancient winemaking traditions. His organic, unfiltered wines, fermented and aged in Qvevri, have garnered international attention. The restaurant, helmed by chef Gia Rokashvili, offers a unique dining experience with no fixed menu; instead, Rokashvili crafts daily culinary creations using fresh, local market produce.

Adjacent to this culinary gem is Okro’s Wine Restaurant & Cellar, established by native Sighnaghi resident John Okruashvili. Naming his venture after the Georgian word for gold, “Orko,” Okruashvili released his first wine in 2009. Specializing in traditional, organic Qvevri wines, he utilizes grapes from his own vineyard. The winery’s restaurant features a terrace that provides splendid views of the Alazani Valley, making it a perfect spot to savor these unique wines.

Where to Stay in Sighnaghi

Lost Ridge Inn is a boutique inn, a restaurant, a craft brewery, and a horse ranch all in one. It is located on a crest overlooking the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. This rural getaway is the first of its kind in Georgia and is also owned by John Wurdeman. The boutique hotel has six rooms, each with a modern rustic vibe. The Lost Ridge Café serves a seasonal menu with ingredients from their permaculture garden. The craft brewery produces beer onsite and ages it in the onsite beer cave. And they offer horseback riding in the mountains.

The Gurjaani Municipality, less than an hour north of Sighnaghi, is in the heart of the Kakheti region and is home to more than 80 wineries. Nine of the PDOS in Georgia come from the Gurjaani region. This is where the annual Gurjaani Wine Festival, a celebration of the heritage and diversity of Georgian wine, takes place each October.

Gurjaani Wine Festival

More than 30,000 people attend this event which takes place in the forested Akhtala Park and features hundreds of wineries of all sizes, handicraft vendors, live music, cultural exhibitions, and local Georgian foods, including Kakheti barbecue. This festival is a great reason to travel to Georgia in October.

Where to Stay in Gurjaani

Located in the Gurjaani region’s village of Vazisubani, the Vazisubani Estate is a blend of historical elegance and contemporary luxury. Established in 1891, this graceful estate and vineyard was initially the property of a Georgian nobleman, before transitioning to state ownership. Today, it has been transformed into a 19-room hotel, offering a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities.

The estate extends over a 35-hectare vineyard. Complementing the vineyards is a 1.5-hectare park, an oasis of diverse trees and exotic plant species, adding to the estate’s serene and picturesque setting.

A highlight of the Vazisubani Estate is its modern restaurant. Here, Winetravelers can indulge in culinary delights while enjoying the estate’s own wines. The restaurant is designed with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, which not only bathe the space in natural light but also open up to reveal a swimming pool and breathtaking panoramic views, offering a dining experience that beautifully marries the estate’s historic legacy with contemporary luxury.

Our Georgia wine tours focus on many of the great wineries near the Kakheti wine region towns of Telavi, Kvareli, and Signagi and we highly recommend staying one, two or three nights away from Tbilisi giving you quality time to relax and taste.

  • Visit wineries that employ traditional Qvevri and modern methods.
  • Experience unique Qvevri wine and learn all about it
  • Tour with owners and winemakers
  • Taste many wines that will be new to you
  • Stay at lovely vineyard and winery hotels
  • Georgian cuisine is superb – Plenty of chances to enjoy it
  • Visits to historic, beautiful churches and monuments

Remember: Everything we do is private and customizable – just let us know if there is something you wish to add or remove from our Kakheti wine tours.

Great Georgian BBQ at the Chubini wine cellar

So Many Wineries – Qvevri & Steel, Old & New.

There are so many options they are impossible to talk about at length here, but below we cover an outline example program for one or two nights away from Tbilisi just to show you what is possible:

Our Kakheti wine tours start by heading out of Tbilisi for around two hours or so until we reach the heart of Kakheti. Our first visit will be Shumi winery which is a well oiled, visitor-friendly setup and the perfect introduction to quality Qvevri wine. A tour of the factory will be made, followed by a tasting.

After our time at Shumi we will head further into the countryside for 30 minutes or so to visit the boutique Qvevri winery, Chubini . We will be having lunch here with the owners Tornike and Lika. This newly married couple is a delight to spend time with and they will proudly show you what they do, and we will try their wines during lunch relaxing in the garden.

A local baker lets Malka take the bread out of the oven

You probably will not want to leave Chubini, but we have to as there is more to see and taste. We will drive 15 minutes more to the historic Chateau Eniseli winery which will also be our home for the night. This place is fascinating and exudes historical importance and Soviet influence. The story behind this winery is too long to recount here, suffice to say you will find it very interesting during a tour of this very unusual facility.

You will enjoy a tasting of Eniseli wines, brandy, and chacha and be free to relax for the evening in this very tranquil place.

Facebook album of several trips to Kakheti

Telavi & Signagi on our Georgia wine tours

For our two night Georgia wine tours we would have you stay in the Telavi area first night, then in Signagi for the second. Several wineries around Signagi will be added into the schedule according to your tastes, white, red, semi-sweet, Qvevri, oaked…the area has them all.

Gary enjoying the qvevri wine at Vellino winery in Georgia

Before we get to Signagi for the night there is much to do, see and taste.

After breakfast, we will visit the spectacular Gremi Fortress and enjoy a quick look at the museum inside the structure. The video below should give you the idea, lovely place indeed.

After visiting Gremi we will head 15 minutes to the Shilda winery. This is a total contrast to what you have at Eniseli, this winery was built in 2015.

We will have a look at the production area where modern stainless steel is being used to produce great quality wine from Kakheti grapes. The company does also use Qvevri for some of its wines and we will taste both styles.

While we are here at Shilda we will learn about, and try, making traditional Georgian Shoti bread in the ubiquitous circular ovens, plus Georgian Khinkali dumplings and also Churchkhela sweets. This is a great hands-on experience and a lot of fun.

Leaving Shilda, we have a number of variations on Georgia wine tours en-route to Signagi if you are enjoying a two-night package. A one night package will mean we visit one more winery in Telavi before heading back to Tbilisi, this will one of many but a great option is Schuchmann Winery .

Schuchmann is also a great option for an overnight stay, this will all depend on the route you choose and your budget. In any case, we will visit the winery, enjoy a tasting and the superb views that the place affords.

If you have a three-day trip then we will head through some classic terroir such as Tsinandale and Mukuzani on our way to the winery which will also be our lunch spot today, Numisi Cellar and museum.

This is a very quirky place, and while the wine may be the standard of Shumi or Shilda, the experience is an interesting one. If the owner is around then we can meet him and hear, through the guide, a little about the place. We will enjoy a tour of the Qvevri cellar and the many museum pieces that are on show, then have a tasting during a lunch of traditional Georgian BBQ.

The beautiful hill-top town of Signagi in Georgia, center of wine country

After this visit, you will be ready to head to your hotel, so we drive up the hill to the lovely town of Signagi, check you in and leave you free till after breakfast in the morning.

Keep going – Keep tasting!

The Pheasant´s Tears winery has a lovely tasting room in this quaint hill-top town, and we will have a tour and tasting here after giving you time to wander a little in the town after breakfast.

We will then leave Signagi and drive 45 minutes or so to reach the small village of Badiauri. Here we will visit one of the traditional bakeries producing bread the way you have seen so far.

After the bakeries, we will head to the tiny rural village of Kakabeti to visit the fantastic Vellino boutique winery. The Qvevri wines here are superb quality and delicious. We will enjoy being educated on the local terroir by the young owner and then have a premium tasting.

Georgia wine tours and wine tasting experiences

After Vellino there may be one more winery visit in the Khashmi area before heading back to Tbilisi, but this will depend on how we are going for time.

Being a private tour it gives us the chance to adapt to local opportunities and for your guide to suggest a place en route. We will go with the flow (of wine)!

Why not extend your time and try our amazing Birthplace of Wine tour triangle, taking in some of the best wine regions of the Caucasus.

We enjoyed a 3 day wine trip in the Colchagua region of Chile with Gary and Malka - just incredible! They took us to vineyards that we had never heard of; all of which were interesting and different in their own way. Gary and Malka are both super knowledgable, extremely passionate about wine and just really nice / professional people to spend time with. Steven & Meg, Aberdeen, UK - Sept 2021
