The death of six members of Ismail Haniyeh's family will not change Hamas's belief that it is in the "driving seat" of ceasefire negotiations, our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall  says. 

"The assumption is that this [reported attack on Haniyeh's family] is designed to put pressure on Hamas to agree to a new hostage deal," he says.

"What I've been hearing over the past 36 hours or so is that Hamas are inclined to reject a new ceasefire deal because, quite honestly, they think they are in the driving seat at the moment."

Israel has removed nearly all of its troops from Gaza, so the military pressure has lessened significantly, Bunkall assessed, before adding that the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen aid workers means that there's a lot more humanitarian aid going into Gaza as well - a further positive for Hamas. 

"Haniyeh himself said... [if targeting his family] is a tactic that the Israelis are trying to use, it is delusional," Bunkall said. 

Sky News has contacted the IDF, but it could not confirm the reports that his sons had been killed. 

As a prominent member of the movement that became Hamas in the late 1980s, Ismail Haniyeh is widely considered the group's overall leader.

He was imprisoned in 1989 as part of the Israeli response to the first Palestinian uprising and then spent time in the "no man's land" between Israel and Lebanon in 1992.

Once back in Gaza, in 1997 he was put in charge of the office of Ahmed Yassin - one of the Hamas founders and its spiritual leader - who was killed in an Israeli helicopter attack in 2004.

This increased his influence, and he was eventually elected Palestinian prime minister by its president and the leader of rival group Fatah, Mahmoud Abbas, when Hamas won the most seats in the 2006 elections.

A year later, however, fighting broke out between Hamas and Fatah, ultimately ousting Fatah from Gaza and separating the Palestinian territories between the Hamas-controlled strip and Palestinian Authority-run West Bank.

This made Mr Haniyeh "de facto leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip" between 2007 and 2017, according to Dr Abdul Bashid Shaikh, lecturer in Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Leeds.

He remained as such until he was succeeded by Yahya Sinwar. 

He then moved to Qatar to become head of the political bureau.

He "chooses to be based in Doha as he is approaching his 70s now… and as a result [acts as] a political interlocutor between Hamas, Qatar, Iran and other international powers," Dr Shaikh adds.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has accused Israel of killing three of his children in "the spirit of revenge and murder".

He told Al Jazeera satellite channel his sons "were martyred on the road to liberating Jerusalem and the al Aqsa Mosque".

"The criminal enemy is driven by the spirit of revenge and murder and does not value any standards or laws," said Mr Haniyeh, who lives in exile in Qatar.

He said the killings would not pressure Hamas into softening its negotiating position.

"The enemy believes that by targeting the families of the leaders, it will push them to give up the demands of our people," he said. 

"Anyone who believes that targeting my sons will push Hamas to change its position is delusional."

Aid shipments to Gaza from Cyprus are expected to resume soon, officials said this afternoon, after they were stopped last week when Israel killed seven aid workers.

Cyprus has about 1,000 tonnes of aid destined for starving or severely hungry people in Gaza stored on the island. 

It is being held there after a decision by World Central Kitchen to pause and review activity in the territory after the deaths of its workers on 1 April.

The US plans to set up a dock, with a target date of 1 May, on Gaza's Mediterranean coast to enable aid deliveries. 

The deliveries will be pre-screened in Cyprus with Israeli oversight.

With that jetty in place, Cyprus expects aid to resume soon, Cypriot president Nikos Christodoulides said.

Gaza faces famine and widespread disease, with nearly all its inhabitants now homeless in the six months since Israel's military operation started.

More on ceasefire talks now, and Israeli officials say they have agreed to concessions allowing the return of 150,000 Palestinians to the north of Gaza.

Two officials with knowledge of the talks told Reuters this formed part of a US proposal for a truce.

In return, they said, Hamas would be required to give a list of female, elderly and sick hostages it still holds alive. 

Hamas said yesterday that the latest proposal passed on by Eqyptian and Qatari mediators did not meet demands, but that it would study it further before responding.

Hamas wants an end to the Israeli military offensive, a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and permission for displaced Palestinians to return home.

Israel's immediate aim is to secure the release of hostages seized on 7 October, and it says it will not end the war until Hamas no longer controls Gaza or threatens Israel's militarily.

Clear differences remain between Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu on Israel's plans to launch an offensive in Rafah, an official in the prime minister's office has said.

They told NBC News that the leaders, who spoke over the phone, were aligned on the need to "repel the Iranian threat".

The comments came after Mr Biden said Benjamin Netanyahu's approach to the war was a "mistake".

"The president's statement was apparently made days ago, before the call with the prime minister," the official said.

"In the course of the call it was clear that differences on Rafah have not been resolved but the leaders are aligned on the need to bolster humanitarian aid and repel the Iranian threat."

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry has said 33,482 Palestinians have been killed by Israel's military offensive since 7 October.

A further 76,049 people have been wounded, the ministry said.

The updated figures come after 122 people were killed and 56 injured in the last 24 hours, it said.

The ministry's figures do not differentiate between civilians and fighters, but it says the majority of those killed were women and children.

Earlier today, we reported on Iran's supreme leader demanding Israel "be punished" for the killings of Iranian generals in Syria.

We can now bring you Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's comments in full, as he went on to condemn the West for the war in Gaza.

"It was expected they [would] prevent [Israel] in this disaster. They did not. They did not fulfil their duties, the Western governments," he said.

He said the Israeli airstrike in Syria demolished Iran's consulate, calling it akin to an attack on Iranian territory.

"When they attacked our consulate area, it was like they attacked our territory," Mr Khamenei said.

The strike killed 12 people: seven Iranian Revolutionary Guard members, four Syrians and a Hezbollah militia member.

Israel has not acknowledged any involvement, though it has been bracing for an Iranian response to the attack.
