What you need to know about the z2 auto travel cpap machine.

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP offers both CPAP and APAP settings . The CPAP setting provides a fixed level of air pressure, which is determined in a  CPAP titration study , while the APAP setting uses an algorithm to automatically adjust the air pressure to accommodate a sleeper’s changing breathing patterns. A sleep specialist can determine which mode is best for you and program the machine accordingly.

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP is highly streamlined, even compared to other travel CPAP machines. Traditional humidifiers can be bulky, but the Z2 uses a disposable heat and moisture exchanger (HME) that uses moisture in the sleeper’s breath to provide humidification without a water tank.

Other Z2 features include ramp mode, a reusable Qlite muffler to quiet the sound, automatic start and stop, a Nitelog app to track sleep data, and a proprietary Z-Breathe algorithm that provides a more comfortable air pressure level.

What Comes With It

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP comes with the components required to use the machine, such as a power cable, tubing, tube adapter, USB cable for data transfer, and filter. The user must  purchase their mask  separately, as is common with CPAP machines.

The Z2 also has two unique components, an HME and a Qlite muffler. The HME recycles moisture from the sleeper’s breath to humidify the pressurized air, while the Qlite uses foam to dampen noises produced by the device.

Features You Might Like

The Z2 offers features that are common among travel CPAP machines, like a small size and battery compatibility, as well as less common features such as the disposable HME and the proprietary Qlite muffler. The Z2 is also approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for in-flight use.

Special Features:

• Heat and moisture exchanger (HME):  To combat  sinus and airway irritation  that can result from dry air, the Z2 uses a small cartridge to provide humidity rather than a bulky water tank. Called an HME, this cartridge recycles moisture from the sleeper’s breath. The HME is disposable and should be replaced every seven days of use.
• Qlite muffler:  This small, reusable piece fits between the CPAP device and hose and is designed to dampen noises produced by the machine. This piece does not require cleaning.
• Z-Breathe algorithm:  The Z-Breathe feature offers three settings of pressure relief, or reduced air pressure, as a sleeper first exhales. This setting makes breathing with the CPAP machine easier for some people and must be set by a health care professional.
• Automatic start/stop : The Z2 starts and stops automatically when the user puts on and takes off their mask.
• Ramp mode:  Ramp mode can make it easier to fall asleep while using a CPAP machine by initially releasing air at a low air pressure level and gradually increasing it to the desired level. Users can set and save their preferred ramp time in five-minute increments.
• Nitelog Bluetooth app:  Users can download an optional app onto Apple or Android devices. This app connects to the CPAP machine via Bluetooth and allows sleepers to view their sleep data and control the machine from the app.
• Desktop software:  Those who prefer not to use a phone app can still access their sleep data by downloading software from the Breas Medical site to a Windows computer.
• Optional battery power source:  For people who want to use the Z2 Auto Travel CPAP without plugging the device into a wall outlet, a PowerShell accessory is available for an additional cost. This accessory provides enough power to run the device for a full night of sleep.

CPAP Machine Size and Cost

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP is exceptionally streamlined and fits easily into a carry-on bag or purse. At 6.5 by 3.3 inches and only 2 inches tall, the Z2 weighs less than a pound and is one of the smallest travel CPAP machines on the market. The use of an HME also provides humidification without a bulky tank, so sleepers don't have to choose between small size and comfort.

APAP and travel CPAP machines tend to cost more than standard CPAP machines. The Z2 has an average price-point for a travel CPAP machine and is priced lower than most small APAP machines.

Is This CPAP Machine Easy to Use?

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP features a backlit LCD screen and a settings menu that users can navigate using three large buttons. Most people are likely to find the Z2 easy to use, though some users may need to use glasses to read the display information.

How Compatible Is This Machine With Other PAP Products?

Like most other CPAP machines, the Z2 is compatible with all standard size and slim-style tubing as well as CPAP masks that work with standard tubing. The Qlite muffler is also compatible with all standard tubing.

Sleepers must purchase replacement heat and moisture exchanger cartridges from Breas Medical. Breas does not recommend purchasing a separate humidifier tank to use with the Z2 Auto instead of the HME cartridges, since using a humidifier may affect the Qlite muffler.

The secret? When compared to its predecessor, the Z1 Auto, the Z2 Auto is 29% quieter and has a different pitch to the motor for optimal comfort. An added bonus? It’s an attractive option for busy travelers due to its lightweight and small stature.

How does it stack up against the competition? Let’s find out!

The Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine vs Similar Travel Machines

The Z2 Auto checks in at 26 decibels and is 29% quieter than the Z1 Auto. However, the pitch of the motor is the showstopper compared to the Z1 Auto. The Z2 Auto is whisper-quiet and sounds similar to quiet background noise while you sleep. This change integrates your therapy into your nighttime routine instead of acting as a disruption. The included  Q-Tube Muffler  dampens the sound further to create a sleeping environment with fewer interruptions.

The Z2 Auto is a little more expensive than the Z1 but is still value-priced compared to similar machines in the travel category. The Z2 Auto is so light that you can measure the weight of the machine in ounces and not pounds! It weighs in at 10.4 ounces, which is a nice weight for a travel machine. It weighs roughly the same as the Z1 Auto and others in the travel category. The lightweight of the Z2 Auto allows you to put it in your suitcase or backpack and venture out to your next travel destination.

The Z2 Auto recycles humidity from your exhaled breath to create the sensation of moisture without needing water-based humidification. This will keep your nose and throat from drying out. The best part? You won’t have to worry about lugging around a separate humidification system or a tank of distilled water while you’re traveling. Just breathe and humidification is made available!

Smart Features: 8

The Z2 Auto has auto-start and auto-stop features that are similar to the Z1 Auto. Once you put on your mask, the Z2 Auto detects changes in your breathing and automatically starts. When you wake up, the Z2 Auto will sense your breathing pattern change and automatically stop. That’s one less thing to worry about when you’re on-the-go!

The DreamStation Go and AirMini are comparable to each other in terms of smart features, and the Z2 Auto comes very close.

The review was inaccurate with respect to the smart features. The Nitelog app does not function with the Z2. The reviews from users of the Z1 are terrible. The app itself looks like a first generation iPhone app and has not been updated in 3-4 years despite constant complaints from users. Very odd.

Hi Craig, This may be obvious to everyone but me, but how do I interpret the scores? Is 1 the highest or is 10 the highest score? Is it possible to upgrade my noisy Z1 to a Z2 without paying full price? I can’t even use the Z1 because the noise keeps me awake.

I have a z1 and an air mini. I would rate the house if the z1 at 3 and the air mini at 9 since you can barely hear the air mini.

I have a Z2 Auto. It’s a very good travel machine, and it is somewhat quieter than the Z1, which I also had prior to the Z2.

There is still some noise, but it’s much improved. Noise is also impacted by your choice of mask and tube. I found that full size 19mm tubing is quieter.

Regarding the App – it works exactly the same on the Z2 as the Z1. It definitely needs tweaking. The biggest challenge is getting the app to connect to bluetooth. When you get the connection screen, it seems to see every device in the neighborhood, and the screen scrolls quickly which makes it hard to connect. Once you get the hang of it you can get connected. If you want more data, they have a Win 10 compatible program that has much better data than the mobile app. Having said that, the Nightlog app, and their Windows app have much more info than Resmed My Air. All in all I like the unit.

I am using HDM Auto Z1 since May 19 for my sleep apnea with AHI of 36 . But I am not at all satisfied with this machine as in spite of changing the machine two times by your dealer the AHI is not coming down below 12 . Ideally this should by now would have been below 1. Don’t know what to do and the dealer of the machine in India is equally confused. This small machine is unable to produce pressure more than 8 to 10 in average. May be this type of small machine is good for few days in tour to keep AHI in moderate condition and not suitable for regular use. Breas should declare this before it is sold. But what about replacement of my machine is not known, a mere waste of $1000 !

Hey Debjyoti, I’m sorry about the difficulty your experiencing with your CPAP therapy. Have you spoken with your doctor regarding your pressure setting? Your doctor should be able to review your sleep therapy data, and make a medical decision to adjust your pressure/machine settings and determine what may be causing your AHI to remain at 12, or higher.

buenas tardes, tengo problemas con mi z2 auto, ya que a la segunda semana la aplicación nitelog, no me deja entrar a los resultado de mi terapia vía celular ni utilizando el pc, y lo segundo que cuando inicio mi terapia z2 y ajusto el tipo en apap 2 para que este monitoree mi presión dependiendo de los episodios de apnea que tenga durante la noche, y ultima mente pasa la presión de inicio es de 4.0 y a los diez minutos sube hasta 12 y sigo aun despierto, y mi respiración sigue siendo la misma, no entiendo porque hace esa subida de presión tan drástica si respiro normal mente porque todavía me encuentro despierto, es posible que este aparato se pueda hacer un Reset, e inicial valores nueva mente, haber si se corrige el error; y no tener que enviar el Z2 Auto a una revisión mas profunda, agradezco me puedan responder y colaborar. gracias

Hola Andrés, lamento los problemas que tienes con tu máquina Z2 CPAP. ¿Has intentado desinstalar y reinstalar la aplicación Nitelog? Si no, por favor hazlo.

Además, para que su ajuste de presión aumente de 4 a 12 mientras está despierto, es posible que tenga una rampa configurada en su máquina.

Puede desactivar la rampa, si lo desea.

Desafortunadamente, no hay un botón de reinicio en la máquina, sin embargo, si necesita ayuda para cambiar algunas de las configuraciones en su máquina, estaremos encantados de ayudarle.

The Z2 Auto may be small in size but it has a variety of features that will make sure you get the best out of your CPAP therapy. Some of those features include auto start and stop, Waterless humidification with included Heat Moisture Exchanger, 29% quieter motor, and automatically adjusting to correct pressure.

The machine does not require a special mask or tube; any mask is compatible as long as it does not have a proprietary connection.

The Z-Breathe® Comfort Feature minimizes the common pressure swings to deliver comfortable treatment. This new feature makes it easier to exhale and improves the quality of sleep. Z-Breathe has 3 settings so you can set it to adjust your personal needs.

The Z2 automatically starts therapy once you place your mask on your face and identifies when treatment is complete or a leak and automatically turns off. It also includes the Z2's ramp feature, which allows you to start your pressure at a lower setting and ramp it up over time to let you adjust more gradually to sleep therapy.

The device automatically compensates for minor mask leaks, or in the event of a detrimental leak, the display screen will warn you to ensure that the leak is corrected promptly.

Carrying distilled water is a thing of the past! The Z2 CPAP uses a Heat Moisture Exchange unit to retain and reuse moisture from your breath to keep the throat and nasal passages from drying out during therapy.

For added battery life, an optional integrated battery called the PowerShell is available. The rechargeable, lithium-ion battery provides a full night's therapy on a single charge. The PowerShell can also be used as a backup power supply, automatically taking over during a power outage or blackout. The device is also compatible with external power sources such as Medistrom Pilot-12 Lite Battery.

You can keep track of your sleep data history with a USB connection to the free DataViewer program. This is important as maintaining tabs on your sleep therapy, helping you adjust your settings if needed, and enables you to stay consistent with treatment. The Nitelog app available for IOS and Android uses the Z2 Auto's built-in Bluetooth chip to sync data wirelessly. It also enables sharing to email data to your provider whenever you need to.

The Z2 uses an improved, quieter motor and includes a FREE Q-Tube CPAP Muffler to further reduce ambient noise from the device.

FAA Compliant The Z2 Auto complies with RTCA/DO-160, Section 21, Category M and can be considered FAA compliant and able to be used aboard an aircraft without further testing. The Z2 Bluetooth must be in the off position similar to any other mobile device to maintain compliance.

HME – Waterless Humidification: The Z2 comes with a small, portable humidification cartridge called an HME (Heat Moisture Exchanger). When inserted between the hose and the mask, it captures the moisture in the exhaled breath and releases it on the inhaled breath. It does not require any electricity or additional water. No more hunting for distilled water when you reach your destination.

No Proprietary Mask is Required: The Z2 does not require a proprietary mask or tube to operate. You can use your favorite mask as long as it does not have proprietary connections.

The Z2 can be operated with the 4’ long, Slim Style tube that it comes with. The Slim Style tube is also available in a 6’ length. Or it can be used with a standard 19 mm tube.

With cold & flu season and COVID-19 in full swing, it's more important than ever to focus on your health. Don’t know where to start? Start with your CPAP supplies. You use this equipment every night, so  making sure it's being replaced and cleaned properly ,  is critical not only to your sleep health, but your overall health as well. 

Did you know that the natural oils from your face stick to your cushion? Over time, this will soften your mask cushion and break down the seal. Unfortunately, you will then experience air leaks and a poorer night sleep. Do not let this happen to you!

We created the ultimate guide (as recommended by major insurance companies) to make sure you are replacing your CPAP supplies on time and cleaning them correctly!

WHEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY CPAP SUPPLIES?

Failure to timely change your CPAP supplies could lead to infections and respiratory problems! There is hidden bacteria, grime, and dirt all over CPAP supplies!

HOW SHOULD I CLEAN MY CPAP SUPPLIES?

In-between new supplies, pollen, dust, bacteria, and air particles build up on your supplies. Manufacturers, suppliers, and sleep physicians all recommend  regular cleanings of your CPAP equipment and supplies ; but keeping track of when to clean what, is no easy task! We are here to help.

“It is vitally important to keep everything as clean as possible, as hoses/tubing and masks can be a prime breeding ground for bacteria and mold,” said Phoebe Ochman, director of Communications for Sleep Apnea Treatment Centers of America.

CLEANING YOUR CPAP SUPPLIES

• Add warm water to a bathtub or sink.
• Mix in a mild soap. Some patients prefer baby soap,  the Neutralizing Pre-Wash by SoClean , or a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar.
• Swirl around for a few minutes and then rinse thoroughly.
• Leave all items to hang/air dry. Be sure to dry the chamber as much as possible with a paper towel or cloth, and then leave it out to air dry the rest of the way.
• Clean all high-touch surfaces like nightstands, doorknobs, and light switches daily with a  disposable wipe  or a cloth and an EPA approved  disinfectant .

Important Tips

• Do  not  use bleach or other harsh chemicals.
• Empty unused humidifier water daily and refill nightly.
• If distilled water is unavailable, a back-up  chamber  should be kept on hand to immediately replace if residue develops.
• If your mask has  magnetic clips , leave them attached to the mask frame before cleaning.
