Dodge Journey Bad Ignition Switch: Symptoms, Causes, + How to Fix

2010 dodge journey ignition switch replacement

Your  Dodge Journey ‘s ignition switch is one of the most vital items on the entire vehicle.  If it fails, the entire vehicle won’t be able to run.

Dodge Journey Bad Ignition Switch

We’ve compiled some of the most common  symptoms of a bad ignition switch .  These include stalling issues, not starting, and no power to the radio or accessories.

Function of an Ignition Switch

Dodge Journey Bad Ignition Switch Symptoms

The ignition switch is a critical component of a vehicle’s electrical system that plays an important role in starting and stopping the engine.

The Journey’s  ignition switch  is not what your key goes into.  That is called the lock cylinder.  The ignition switch typically sits directly behind the lock cylinder.  It has three main functions.

It is usually located on the steering column, and when the key is inserted and turned, it activates the electrical system of the car.

The ignition switch has several functions, including:

  • Providing power to the starter motor : When the key is turned to the “start” position, the ignition switch sends an electrical signal to the starter motor, which then cranks the engine.
  • Activating the fuel pump : As the ignition switch is turned on, it sends power to the fuel pump, which then pumps fuel from the gas tank to the engine.
  • Providing power to the ignition system : The ignition switch also sends power to the ignition system, which then ignites the fuel in the engine cylinders and starts the combustion process.
  • Controlling other electrical systems : The ignition switch can also control other electrical systems in the car, such as the radio, headlights, and windshield wipers.

Symptoms of a Bad Ignition Switch

2010 dodge journey ignition switch replacement

When the ignition switch of a Dodge Journey goes bad, it can cause a range of symptoms that can negatively affect the vehicle’s performance. Here are some of the most common symptoms of a bad ignition switch:

Carortruck Won’t Start

One of the most obvious signs of a bad ignition switch is when the car won’t start. When the key is turned , the ignition should turn on and send a signal to the starter motor to turn. If this doesn’t happen, it could be due to a bad ignition switch.

Another symptom of a bad ignition switch is stalling. If the ignition switch fails at the “on” position, it may result in the vehicle starting and then immediately stalling. This could be due to a momentary power supply to the fuel pump and ignition system when the switch is in the cranking position.

Intermittent Loss of Lighting and Other Accessories

A bad ignition switch can cause intermittent loss of lighting and other accessories. This could be due to broken springs, worn ignition switch contacts, or temperature problems.

2010 dodge journey ignition switch replacement

A bad ignition switch can also cause a silent starter motor. This is when the starter motor doesn’t make any noise when the key is turned. It could be due to a lack of power supply to the starter motor.

Difficulty in Turning the Key

If the key is difficult to turn or requires a lot of strong twisting and jiggling, it could be due to a bad ignition switch.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to have the ignition switch checked by a professional mechanic. Ignoring these symptoms could lead to further damage to the vehicle and potentially dangerous situations on the road.

Troubleshooting a Bad Ignition Switch

Dodge Journey Bad Ignition Diagnosis

If you are experiencing issues with your Dodge Journey ignition switch, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem before seeking professional help. I

n this section, we will outline some initial diagnostics and professional evaluation options.

Initial Diagnostics

The first step in troubleshooting a bad ignition switch is to check for some common symptoms. These include:

  • The key is hard or impossible to turn in the ignition.
  • The engine does not start or takes multiple attempts to start.
  • The engine stalls or shuts off unexpectedly while driving.
  • The dashboard lights and accessories do not turn on when the key is turned.

For the last two items, a loose battery connection, corroded battery post, or bad battery cable is often the cause.

If you’re experiencing issues with your Dodge Journey’s ignition switch, it may be time to replace it. Ignition switch failure can cause a variety of problems, from intermittent failure of electronics to a no crank condition. Here are some steps to replace the ignition switch on your Dodge Journey.

DIY Replacement Steps

Ignition switch replacement can be challenging. And depending on your Journey’s model year, it can be more involved than the steps listed below.

Replacing the ignition switch on a Dodge Journey is a fairly straightforward process that can be done at home with the right tools. Here are the basic steps:

  • Disconnect the battery : Before starting any work on the ignition switch, disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical accidents.
  • Remove the steering column cover: Remove the screws holding the steering column cover in place, and then remove the cover.
  • Remove the ignition switch : Locate the ignition switch and remove it by disconnecting the electrical connectors and removing the screws holding it in place.
  • Install the new ignition switch : Install the new ignition switch by reversing the steps you took to remove the old one. Make sure to tighten the screws and reconnect the electrical connectors.
  • Reconnect the battery : Reconnect the battery and test the new ignition switch to ensure it’s working properly.

Cost of Professional Replacement

If you’re not comfortable replacing the ignition switch on your own, you can take your Dodge Journey to a professional mechanic.

The cost of professional replacement will vary depending on where you go and the severity of the problem. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $500 for ignition switch replacement at a professional auto repair shop.

It’s important to note that the cost of parts and labor can vary greatly depending on the make and model of your vehicle, as well as your location. Be sure to get a quote from a few different mechanics before making a decision on where to take your Dodge Journey for ignition switch replacement.

In summary, a bad ignition switch can cause a lot of problems for a Dodge Journey owner. Symptoms of a bad ignition switch include difficulty starting the engine, the engine not starting at all, and the engine stalling while driving.

If you suspect that your Journey’s ignition switch is faulty, it is important to have it checked by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. Ignoring the problem can lead to more serious issues, such as a complete engine failure or even a fire.

While there are many potential causes of a bad ignition switch, the most common is wear and tear over time. Regular maintenance of the ignition system, including replacing worn or damaged components, can help prevent ignition switch problems from developing in the first place.

In addition to regular maintenance, there are a few things that Journey owners can do to help prevent ignition switch problems. These include using a high-quality key, avoiding excessive force when turning the key, and keeping the key and ignition cylinder clean and free of debris.

Overall, while a bad ignition switch can be a frustrating and potentially dangerous problem, it is one that can be prevented and resolved with proper care and maintenance. By staying vigilant and addressing any issues as soon as they arise, Journey owners can ensure that their vehicles remain safe, reliable, and enjoyable to drive for years to come.

5 Signs You Need An Ignition Switch Replacement

Here are some common signs of a failing or broken ignition switch:

1. Worn-Out And Stuck Keys

A bad ignition switch prevents the car key from properly aligning with the keyhole. Over time, the ignition switch issues may worsen, and you’ll soon find it difficult to get the car key in or out of the ignition switch.

One of the main culprits is a worn-out or damaged ignition key itself.  Now, the ignition system consists of ‘wafers’ (unique cuts) within the ignition lock cylinder that connects to the correct car key.

Trying to insert a worn-out key could damage these cuts in the ignition cylinder — forming cracks on the wafers. As a result, your car key may get stuck because the wafers no longer fit the ignition key.

Old cylinder wafers can also get damaged by themselves — demanding an ignition key replacement from an auto repair locksmith service. Here, you’ll need not only a new key but a new ignition housing as well.

Sometimes, you may be able to slide the key into your car’s ignition switch but find it difficult to turn it. This may happen if your vehicle is in a steering wheel lock.

Turn your steering wheel back and forth while trying the car key to check if the ignition lock is engaged.

2. Trouble Starting The Car

An ignition switch has electrical contacts connecting various electrical components to start the car. If these contacts fail, they can create open circuits, causing an electrical problem in the switch .

For example, the ignition coil and ignition module are responsible for drawing the battery power and firing up your spark plugs to start your vehicle. But for that, you need a working ignition switch. In such a case, your engine may crank and then die or, worse, not start at all .

So, get the ignition switch failure checked out, or it’ll be almost impossible to move your car.

Note : Your car may also not start due to problems like a dead car battery , but the ignition switch is a great place to begin an investigation.

3. Car Stalls While Driving

With a failing ignition switch, your car may stop running while you’re driving — due to sudden loss of power in the car’s electrical system.

Here, a faulty ignition switch may stop the power to the car’s ignition and fuel system , causing the engine to stall. Restarting the car may depend on the issue’s severity.

Note : Cars stalling while driving are hazardous. You should immediately call for an auto repair mechanic in this case.

4. Malfunctioning Accessories

Since the ignition switch connects power circuits in your car, your vehicle might experience an electrical problem when the switch malfunctions.

Issues in the switch assembly can cause electrical accessories to act funny or stop working altogether. This happens because your car’s accessories aren’t getting enough power to function correctly.

For example, your car’s headlights may dim, dashboard lights may flicker, radio won’t work, etc. If you own a modern car, you could face more malfunctions as it has more electrical accessories.

5. Warning Dashboard Lights

This is a less common sign of a bad ignition switch.

Usually, the dashboard lights illuminate when you start the car, and then it goes off as soon as the vehicle is running. But when dashboard lights remain dark, you may have a failing ignition switch problem.

To confirm, move the car key to the first position and check for warning dashboard lights. If the dashboard lights go out after moving to the second position, it points to some ignition switch wiring issue.

Additionally, check if you can hear the primary relay click when the starter motor kicks in. If you do, your car’s critical electrical components are receiving power.

If you don’t, the components aren’t receiving power — resulting in your car not starting. Check your dashboard lights for a related warning.

How Much Does An Ignition Switch Replacement Cost?

The total ignition switch replacement cost can fall between $130-$480.

The replacement cost includes both spare parts and ignition switch repair labor costs. The labor costs can be anywhere between $60-$180, and the parts can cost around $70-$300.

Note: The ignition switch replacement cost charged by car repair shops or dealerships depends on your location, model of your car, warranty, etc.

How Urgent Is An Ignition Switch Replacement?

Most people put off an ignition switch replacement till their car key no longer slides in or the car doesn’t start.

Ignition switches last a long time. But when the ignition switch is damaged, resulting issues can be dangerous. This is especially true if your car shuts down while driving.

So it’s best to call an automotive mechanic at the slightest sign of an ignition switch problem.

3 Ignition Switch FAQs

Here are some questions and answers on ignition switches:

1. What Is An Ignition Switch?

The ignition switch is located in the steering column, and is an essential car element that works with the lock cylinder to start your vehicle. It controls almost all of the car’s electronic components.

You insert the car key and turn the ignition switch to start the car.

Generally, ignition switches have four positions:

When the key is at the ‘Start’ position, the ignition system draws electrical energy from the car battery to power crucial vehicle parts required to run it at the ‘On’ position. And if there’s no key, it’ll lock the steering wheel.

If your car has a push-button starting system, it uses the key fob instead of a physical key. A key fob carries unique signals that your car picks up to start once you press the button.

2. How Does An Ignition Switch Work?

The ignition switch is the on-off switch of a car.

When the car key is inserted into an ignition starter switch, a set of tumblers allows it to rotate to close the ignition circuit. The circuit then draws power from the car battery and sends it to the starter motor , which turns the engine, and to the ignition system to fire the spark plugs .

When you turn off the ignition key, you reverse the action and stop all components from drawing power — shutting down the car.

Today car keys have built-in electronic chips that automatically communicate with the car’s computer. In a modern vehicle, you’ll often find a push-button ignition switch instead of car keys.

Here, the ignition system is wired to recognize your button and the ignition key fob’s electric signals. So when you press the button, the key fob sends signals to the car’s computer — after which your vehicle starts.

3. How To Replace The Ignition Switch?

An ignition switch replacement requires you to have some auto repair knowledge. So it’s best to contact a repair shop and get an ignition switch or car key replacement safely, depending on the diagnosis.

That said, here’s a faulty ignition switch replacement guide:

  • First, turn off the ignition.
  • Then disconnect the negative cable from the car battery to prevent shocks from the electrical system.
  • Once done, remove the lower steering column cover with a screwdriver. If the car is dash-mounted, remove the dash panel.
  • Remove the upper steering column cover.
  • Now locate the ignition switch behind the ignition key cylinder. If needed, remove the key cylinder according to the manufacturer’s manual. Be careful with the airbag wiring.
  • Remove the ignition switch by disconnecting the electrical connector from the switch.
  • Install the new ignition switch and secure its electrical connector.
  • Screw the key cylinder in place and then reinstall the lower steering column, followed by the upper steering column.
  • Finally, reconnect the car battery.

Recall Switcheroo: Chrysler Now Replacing Ignition Switches on 702,000 Cars

2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT

The 2008–2010 Dodge Grand Caravan , Journey , and Chrysler Town & Country have ignition switches that may have poor detents and allow the key to be stuck between the accessory and run positions while the engine is running. If the key slips into the accessory position, the car will shut off and disable all power assists and the airbags, similar to the problem on millions of General Motors vehicles . Chrysler said it had been trying to redesign the detent ring and program new software but found that it would “take significantly longer” than simply replacing the switches outright. The company also said it had switched suppliers from Continental to Marquardt and expanded the total population to 702,578 cars.

Starting April 6, dealers will start replacing the switches (and the keys) for 2008–2009 models; owners of 2010 models will have to wait until August 3. Until then, the company recommends removing everything dangling off the keychain. This recall expands upon an initial recall in February 2011 that included only 250,000 models from 2010. Chrysler has received at least 55 owner complaints of stalling, 465 warranty claims, and two rear-end collisions related to the defect.

DODGE JOURNEY 2010: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH

NHTSA Campaign ID Number: 14V373000

Production Dates: 2007-06-29 - 2010-06-17

Manufacturers Involved: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

Manufacturer Campaign Number: R03 (formerly L25)

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH

Potential Number Of Units Affected: 722705

Report Initiator: ODI ODI Report

This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob "if applicable", should also be removed from the key ring. Chrysler Group LLC "Chrysler" is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Dodge Journey vehicles manufactured June 29, 2007, to June 17, 2010, and 2008-2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles manufactured January 26, 2007, to June 17, 2010. Road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch and key FOBs, free of charge. The recall began on May 26, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R03. Note: This is an expansion of recall 11V-139.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 'TTY 1-800-424-9153', or go to www.safercar.gov.

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

2010 dodge journey ignition switch replacement

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

2010 dodge journey ignition switch replacement

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

2010 dodge journey ignition switch replacement

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

2010 dodge journey ignition switch replacement

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

2010 dodge journey ignition switch replacement

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.

1. Process of lamp light replacement should be managed more effectively. 2. It is too noisy in the inner rooms - noise from events (bad sound isolation) 3. All other aspects are on the good level.
