Mountain stages of the 2023 Tour de France

Post last updated:

This page showcases all the mountains and climbs for the 2023 Tour de France. The route was announced on 27 October 2022 and promises plenty of action in the mountains once again. This page reflects the information currently available and will be updated periodically as more information is released about the race.

I have been lucky to experience the thrill of watching the Tour de France on multiple mountain stages and am looking forward to 2023. My toughest descision will be which mountain to choose to spectate. In the Pyrenees the 2023 race returns to the slopes of the iconic Col du Tourmalet, while the race returns to the slopes of Le Puy de Dôme for the first time since 1988.

In 2023 the riders will be faced with the mountains in the first week when the hit the Pyrenees. It will be interesting to see how this shapes the race given there will still be a long way to the finish line. This year also sees a mountain stage on the day before the finish which will test the strength and resolve of all the riders before the final stage in Paris the following day. It will be interesting to see it all play out and I can’t wait until July.

If you are considering visiting France for a cycling holiday or to watch the Tour de France, be sure to check out the rest of the Seek Travel ride website. There is a wealth of information to help you plan your cycling holiday to France including lots of practical information , destination guides and travel information . Our Tour de France section includes a general guide to the race each year as well as tips for watching the event roadside.

A brief history of the mountains in the Tour de France

In most editions of the Tour de France, the mountain stages are where the race is won or lost. A single bad day for a rider in the mountains can see them lose minutes to rivals and an end to their title bid. On long mountain climbs, there is nowhere to hide and any little chinks in a rider’s armor are usually found. Over the years climbs such as Alpe d’Huez, Col du Galibier, Mont Ventoux, Col du Tourmalet, and Col d’Aubisque have become synonymous with the race.

The mountain stages are some of the most popular for people to watch the race and there are many iconic images of riders navigating a sea of spectators. It is estimated that many hundreds of thousands of fans line the mountain roads as they twist and turn their way to the summit. On rare occasions, fans get a little too close and bring a rider down.

First mountain stage in the Pyrenees

The mountains first entered the Tour de France in the 8th edition in 1910. In that year stage 10 started in the Pyrenean town of Bagneres de Luchon and climbed Col du Peyresourde, Col d’Aspin, Col du Tourmalet, and Col d’Aubisque before finishing 326km later in Bayon. Octave Lapize finished the stage first in a time of 14hrs 10mins. No mean feat given that all the mountain passes were dirt roads back in those days and the bikes had nowhere near the range of gears modern bikes now have.

Inclusion of the French Alps

While the organizers deemed the addition of the mountains to be successful the riders were less impressed and there were protests in 1910 about the stage. Nevertheless, in 1911 the French Alps were added to the race with the inclusion of Col du Galibier, Col de Castillion, and Col de Braus. This was in addition to the stage in the Pyrenees.

Since those early days, both the Pyrenees and French Alps have featured in the race annually. In later years climbs in other regions such as the Jura, the Vosges, and the Massif Central have been added to the race. The Pyrenees and French Alps have generally taken turns in being featured in the all-important last week of the race.

Famous climbs and the 2023 Tour de France

There are a number of iconic climbs from the Tour de France that everyone loves seeing in the race. Unfortunately they don’t all make it in every year but we thought I would go through and let you know which ones made the 2023 race and which did not.

Climbs in the French Alps

Alpe d’Huez will not feature in the 2023 Tour de France and was last included in 2022.

Col du Galibier , like Alpe d’Huez featured in the 2022 Tour de France and will not be back in 2023.

Col d’Izoard has not been included in the Tour de France since 2019 and again misses out in the 2023 Tour de France.

Mont Ventoux was climbed twice in the 2021 Tour de France and is not included in the 2023 race.

Climbs in the Pyrenees

Col du Tourmalet , the most climbed mountain in Tour de France history, will once again feature in the 2023 Tour de France. It’s going to be a busy year for the mountains with 3 grand tours, Tour de France, Tour de France Femmes and Vuelta a Espana, all using the mountain for stages.

The Col d’Aspin is also back for the 2023 Tour de France and will be the warm up act before the riders head up the Col du Tourmalet. It was also used in the 2022 Tour de France.

The Col d’Aubisqe last appeared in the 2022 Tour de France and is not included in the 2023 race.

Thrills of the downhill in the 2022 Tour de France

2023 Tour de France climb stats

The 2023 Tour de France includes 10 stages with categorized climbs, four of which includes a summit finish; Stage 6 Cauterest-Cambasque, Stage 9 Puy de Dome, Stage 13 Grand Colombier, and Stage 15 Saint Gervais Mont Blanc. Stage 20, the second last stage, packs a punch with 5 categorized climbs. No doubt there will be plenty of tired legs come to this stage. The race in 2023 visits 5 of France’s mountain ranges, the Pyrenees, Massif Central, the Jura, the Alps, and the Vosges.

There are only 2 climbs over 2,000m in the 2023 Tour de France with the highest being Col de la Loze at 2,304m, followed by Col du Tourmalet at 2,115m. Col de la Loze is also the longest climb of the 2023 Tour de France at 28.4km in length. The shortest climb for this edition of the race is the first categorized climb, Côte de Pike, which averages 10% for 2km on stage 1.

ASO, who runs the Tour de France, has now released the full details of each stage. This includes maps, mountain categorisation and estimated time along the course. I have now updated the table to reflect this information and help you plan your own viewing of these mountain stages.

Categorization of Tour de France climbs

Each of the climbs is given a categorization which is an indication of the difficulty of the climb. Hors category (HC) are the toughest climbs followed by category 1, category 2, category 3, and category 4. A category 1 climb will be harder than a category 3 climb so the lower the number the harder the climb. A climb can change categorization based on how far into a stage it might be. For example, a climb could be considered a category 2 climb if it comes early on in the stage when riders have fresh legs, or a category 1 climb if it comes towards the end.

The climb categorization also comes into play when awarding points in the Polka Dot jersey competition. For example on an HC climb the first rider over the top will be awarded 20 points while on a category 4 climb the first rider will be awarded 1 point. On an HC climb points are awarded for the first 8 riders while on a category 4 climb only the top rider receives any points. There is a sliding scale of points and positions between HC and category 4.

2023 Tour de France: stage 5 top 10

Hello and welcome to Cyclingnews live coverage of stage 5 of the 2023 Tour de France.

The rollout for stage 5 is due to begin at 1305 CET and after a long-ish neutralised section,  actual racing begins at 1325 CET.

Two confirmed non-starters today: Luis León Sánchez (Astana Qazaqstan) and Jacopo Guarnieri (Lotto-Dstny). Both riders broke their collarbones in crashes in Tuesday's tumultuous bunch sprint finish, and the Italian also broke one of his ribs.

For the remainder of the field, after two very hilly stages and then two bunch sprint stages, stage 5 is a rather different kettle of fish as the Tour heads into the Pyrenees for what is a very tough early test of climbing form and potentially a major GC battle.

Stage 5 has over 3,600 metres of vertical climbing, the fifth highest total in the entire race, so this promises to be a real baptism of mountain fire.

Here's a shot of Tadej Pogačar heading towards the start today

Tour de France 2023 stage 5: Tadej Pogačar before the start

It's been widely noted that Pogačar was the winner in Laruns three years ago, also on a stage starting in Pau, also with the Col de Marie Blanque as the last climb. The million dollar question being - will history repeat itself today?

And here's a photo of Pogačar crossing the finish line  in Laruns back in 2020, the fastest of a group of five, and the first Tour stage of his career. (He has taken eight more since then). Fourth that day, incidentally was Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) and fifth Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), a result which will  be a morale boost for those two riders as well today.

Ok, that's enough past Tour history - back to the present. The peloton has just begun its rollout, a nine kilometre neutralised section prior the real race action getting underway.

Confirmed that there are just two non-starters today, Luis León Sánchez (Astana Qazaqstan) and Jacopo Guarnieri (Lotto-Dstny). So 172 riders remain in the 2023 Tour peloton.

Tour de France 2023: Tadej Pogačar, Adam Yates and Jonas Vingegaard

This is the 66th stage start for the Tour from Pau, a town which first appeared on the Grand Boucle route way back in 1930.

Stage 5 of the 2023 Tour de France is now officially underway. Only 162.7 kilometres to go.

Although we've got a flattish first 50 kilometres or so, the mountains are going to be the big protagonist in today's race. Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) is in the lead, by 18 points over Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), but it's worth bearing in mind that a maximum of 32 points are up for grabs in three climbs today. The biggest gain will be the 20 on offer atop the Col du Soudet, while there's 10 on the Col de Marie Blanque, and 2 on the Col d'Ichère.

The first attack of stage 5 is already underway and we're only three kilometres in: France's Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) moves ahead.

This is the official weather forecast for today. Most important, no likelihood rain, so dry descents. Current temperature a balmy 22.9ºC. Variable to overcast skies in the afternoon.

No risk of rain.

Temperatures between 19 and 23°C.

Wind from the North-West averaging 10 km/h with gusts to 25 to 30 km/h.

Here's a quick reminder of the current state of play on the GC, courtesy of   FirstCycling . We can expect some significant changes by close of play today.

Tour de France 2023: GC top 10 after stage 4

Crash for Tour de Suisse winner Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo), who gets back on his bike. Former Tour stage winner Dylan Teuns (Israel-Premier Tech) also hits the deck.

151 kilometres to go

11 kilometres into the race, and Latour has a lead of around 10 seconds amidst plenty of other unsuccessful attacks. This is a rather faster start than stage 4's early snooze-fest.

Skjelmose is back in the pack, according to the official race website.

On today's Tour de France menu

Km 0: Start -  Pau Km 48.8: Sprint -  Lanne-en-Barretoux

Km 87.5: Climb -  Col du Soudet: HC: 15.2kms at 7.2%

Km 124.8:  Climb - Col d’Ichère -  Cat.3:  4.2kms at 7%

Km 144.2: Climb - Col de Marie-Blanque -  Cat. 1: 7.7km at 8.6% Km 162.7: Finish - Laruns

Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal-QuickStep), a crash victim, is struggling with the fast pace as numerous attacks try to go clear.

Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and stage 2 winner Victor Lafay (Cofidis) are both trying to make moves, but there's a lot of ebbing and flowing at the front of the peloton.

Jakobsen, supported by teammate Michael Morkov, is weaving his way through the team cars and is about 30 seconds behind the main peloton.

Latour is about to be joined by eight other riders at the front of the bunch, but it's still a very nervous start and not clear if the break will stick.

The bunch regains ground on the nine, which included Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep) and Rigoberto Urán (EF Education-EasyPost), and we're back to square one.

Jakobsen and Morkov are just a few metres behind the peloton now, so it looks like the Dutch sprinter's mini-crisis is over.

140 kilometres to go

Average speed of nearly 48 kmh in the first 20 kiloemetes and the bunch briefly splits apart under the pressure of such a fast start, but although it's very lined out a the front, no move going clear for more than a few seconds.

Having all but regained contact, Jakobsen is now over a minute down again. It looks like it's going to be a hard day for the Soudal-QuickStep sprinter, who's suffering from his injuries from stage 4's chaotic finish.

A group of 20 riders clips clear in this breathless start to the stage, including GC Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), but it's finally brought back by what amounts to the peloton.

A front group of 50 riders has formed, including Van Aert, and has around 30 seconds on the remains of the peloton.

A furious chase is ensuing as UAE try to chase down the group of some 50 riders ahead, with Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) the best placed rider ahead on GC.

The gap has risen to over a minute for Hindley and co. This could be a seriously dangerous move for UAE and the other GC contenders behind.

Heavy crash for Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), who falls in the middle of the road in the chasing peloton. He has a lot of road rash, and ripped kit, but for now at least he's trying to continue.

The official website says 32 riders are in  the front, including Hindley (at 22 seconds on GC),   Wout van Aert, French National Champion Valentin Madouas, Jack Haig, Rigoberto Uran, Emanuel Buchmann, Giulio Ciccone and Julian Alaphilippe...

The full list in the break: Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma) Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) Felix Grosschartner (UAE) Marc Soler (UAE) Omar Fraile (Ineos) Dani Martínez (Ineos) Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) Esteban Chaves (EF) Rigoberto Uran (EF) Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep) Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep) Remi Cavagna (Soudal-QuickStep) Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) Patrick Konrad (Bora-Hansgrohe) Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) Juanpe López (Lidl-Trek) Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) Berthet (AG2R) Felix Gall (Ag2R) Aurelien Paret-Peintre (AG2R) Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) Gregor Muhlberger (Movistar) Chris Hamilton (DSM) Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech) Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech) Christopher Juul-Jensen (Jayco-AIUIa) Anthony Delaplace (Arkea-Samsic) Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) Maxim Van Gils (Lotto-Dstny) Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan) Torstein Traen (Uno-X) Mathieu Burgaudeau (Total-Energies)

Coquard, Pedersen, Van Aert and Campanaerts clip off the front

Coquard wins the sprint and then sits up. Van Aert, Pedersen and Campanaerts continue on with a 20 second gap.

Campenaerts presses on and the trio ahead have a gap of 40 seconds on their three dozen pursuers, while the peloton is now more than 2:30 back.

A photo of UAE leading the chase in the main peloton. At 16 seconds Van Aert is the man who's currently the closest to Adam Yates on GC, but Jai Hindley at 22 seconds is arguably the biggest overall threat long-term.

Tour de France 2023 stage 5: early on, UAE Team Emirates chase in the main bunch

Bora-Hansgrohe, who have three other riders alongside Hindley in the chasing group behind Van Aert, Campenaerts and Pedersen, are logically doing most of the work.

The chasing group is breaking apart, as French National Champion Madouas, tries to counter-attack. He's chased down by Laporte, as Van Aert is ahead, but his attack is symptomatic of how tricky it is for any cohesion to endure in this massive group of pursuers.

We're in the foothills of the Col de Soudet and here's a profile of the climb.

Stage 5 includes the steep Col de Soudet

90 kilometres to go

Breakaway: Pedersen, Van Aert, Campenaerts At 1:17: chasing group of 33 At 2:40: peloton

The three stage leaders are now on the lowest slopes of the Col de Soudet: HC: 15.2kms at 7.2%.

A shot of the three riders ahead

2023 Tour de France stage 5: Van Aert, Pedersen and Campenaerts on the lower slopes of the Col du Soudet

Reports of very poor visibility with fog at the top of the Col du Soudet

Remi Cavagna (Soudal-QuickStep) is putting in a lot of the hard yards at the front of the group of counter-attackers and the gap on the trio ahead is shrinking as a result.

Bike change for Tadej Pogačar at the foot of the Soudet. Riding solo, he's quickly back in the main group.

10 kilometres from the summit of the Soudet, former World Champion Pedersen starts to struggle

His work done, Cavagna swings off from the chase group and Alaphilippe moves to the front.

After his brief acceleration in the group of chasers behind Campenaerts and Van Aert, Alaphilippe drops back, and Lidl-Trek's Juanpe López is now picking up the pace.

In the main group, Matteo Trentin is doing the bulk of the work for UAE, and his pace has seen almost all of the sprinters dropped. After his difficult start to the stage, Fabio Jakobsen is struggling again.

Jakobsen has four teammates staying with him to try and help him through the remainder of the stage.

Temperatures aren't very cold today, but they've already dropped to 14ºC and there's still seven kilometres of climbing.

Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), who suffered a bad crash early on stage 5, is dropped from the main group.

80 kilometres to go

Van Aert and Campenaerts have 15 seconds on the big chasing group and 3:07 on the main UAE-led peloton. Five kilometres to the summit.

Stake Vegard Laengen, Mikkel Bjerg, Rafal Majka are leading their team leader Pogačar at the head of the string. Trentin has done his work, but UAE also have Soler and Grosschartner ahead in the break.

It looks as if Soler is currently dropping back from the big group of counter-attackers to Pogačar.

Wout Van Aert's climbing pedigree is more than well established, but don't forget for all he's got some major time trialling chops, Campenaerts is also no slouch when the road steepens as well. In the Dauphiné, he went on a long break on the second last stage through the Alps and led the mountains classification for a day.

2.5 kilometres from the summit of the Soudet, Van Aert and Campenaerts have been brought back. 3:10 the gap.

Acceleration by Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), and then Felix Gall (AG2R-Citroen) goes over the top and moves away.

Gall was a winner of a mountain stage in the Tour de Suisse, and briefly the race leader as well, so he's got the pedigree for this kind of move.

Gall's attack, a kilometre from the top of the Soudet, is rewarded with a gap of 20 seconds.

Visibility is atrocious here, as the riders head into a major fog bank.

Felix Gall (AG2R-Citröen) crosses the summit of the Col de Soudet at the head of the race and moves into the provisional lead of the mountains ranking.

Felix Gall takes 20 KOM points, ahead of Dani Martínez who claims 15 and Ciccone 12.

The head of the race drops back out of the fog on the descent of the Soudet and Gall is caught up again by his pursuers.

Van Aert, dropped near the summit of the Soulet, is now catching up as well.

It's a broad, fairly well-surfaced descent for now.

Alaphilippe is 23 seconds back, but slowly closing on the leaders. But the big question is if or when UAE and Jumbo-Visma will reel Hindley, currently in the break with a gap of 4:00, back in. The best placed GC contender at 22 seconds, the Australian is a former Grand Tour winner, don't forget, and if  he holds onto that kind of advantage  all the way to the finish, then it'd be a serious gamechanger in the Tour GC battle.

A shot of the break, with Hindley in third place, on the lower slopes of the Soudet

Stage 5: the big break of the day on the Col de Soudet

In the lead of the race: Benoot (Jumbo-Visma), Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), Fraile (Ineos), Martínez (Ineos), Madouas (Groupama), Uran (EF), Chaves (EF), Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep), Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Hindley (Bora), Buchmann (Bora), Ciccone (Lidl), Berthet (AG2), Gall (AG2R), Jorgenson (Movistar), Muhlberger (Movistar), Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech).

52 kilometres to go

Krists Neilands, the only Israel-Premier Tech present, tries a move from the break just as Chris Hamilton (DSM-Fermenich) regains contact at the back.

Still to come

Km 124.8: Climb - Col d’Ichère -  Cat.3:  4.2kms at 7%

Neilands quickly opens up a gap on lone counter-attacker Van Aert of some 25 seconds.

Various attempts in the chasing group to try and bridge across to Neilands, and finally it's a move by Van Aert and Alaphilippe that goes clear.

Neilands heads onto the Col d’Ichère: Cat.3: 4.2kms at 7% with 18 seconds on Van Aert and Alaphilippe.

Race situation

Breakaway: Neilands At 16 seconds: Van Aert, Alaphilippe At 38 seconds: Hindley group At 3:44: UAE-led bunch

The UAE-lead bunch have now cut a minute off the Hindley group on the flatter segment of terrain between the foot of the descent of Soudet and the Ichère. But there's still three minutes and it remains to be seen what happens when the road steepens again - which it will shortly.

In the Hindley group, AG2R-Citroen's Clément Berthet is putting in the hard work on the front for his teammate and provisional mountains leader Felix Gall. Omar Fraile (Ineos Grenadiers), a former Tour stage winner, is also lending a hand.

Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech) leads over the Cat. 3 Col d'Ichère with 25 seconds advantage on Van Aert and Alaphilippe.

On the descent of the Col d'Ichère, Van Aert and Alaphilippe have finally caught up with Neilands. But the Hindley group is just 16 seconds behind.

Amidst all the logical talk about Hindley and what he can do in the break, it's worth also remembering that Dani Martínez (Ineos Grenadiers), having had a rough start to the race and currently 15 minutes down overall, looks to be back in the stage-hunting game.

Shortly coming up: the Col de Marie Blanque. 'Only' 7.7 kilometres long, but with a brutally steep final four kilometres.

Profile of Col de Marie Blanque

Fraile  (Ineos-Grenadiers) and AG2R-Citröen's Berthet and Aurelien Paret-Peintre are leading the group of chasers, which has swelled to 21 riders, but which will surely shrink again fast on the Marie Blanque.

The three stage leaders (Alaphilippe, Van Aert, Neilands) have reached the foot of the Marie Blanque -  Cat. 1: 7.7km at 8.6%.

In the UAE-led group, Marc Soler is pushing hard on the front. There's still 2:45 between the Hindley group and the main peloton.

Maximum speed in the group of chasers and in the main peloton, as Fraile pulls the break back into touch with Van Aert, Alaphilippe and Neilands and UAE give it everything behind. The gap stays stable at 2:47.

Van Aert is dropped from the front group.

Fraile swings over in the breka, and Berthet keeps pushing on for AG2R teammate Gall.

Alaphilippe is also dropped and the lead group is down to just six riders. Notably Hindley still has Buchmann, the German National Champion and a top-five finisher in the Tour a few years back, with him.

Gall goes for it four kilometres from the summit and Hindley is the only rider who can follow him. They have 2:28 on the bunch.

Hindley comes through to the front and works with Gall. He knows there's a yellow jersey could be out there for him.

In the peloton, Soler drops back, and now it's Felix Grosschartner who's doing the work for UAE. The gap on Hindley, though, remains at 2:30 for now.

Just 20 riders in the main group, as Majka takes over from Grosschartner for UAE.

Bernal reportedly in difficulties in the yellow jersey group. Jumbo-Visma move to the front.

Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) also suffering.

Van Aert and Sepp Kuss are accelerating in the yellow jersey group. Just 10 riders in the front group.

Van Aert swings off and Adam Yates, the race leader, is reportedly not looking good.

20 kilometres

Hindley attacks 1.5 kilometres from the summit.

Adam Yates, yellow jersey, is dropped, as is Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos).

Only Sepp Kuss, Vingegaard and Pogacar in the GC group now.

The gap between Hindley and the Vingegaard/Pogacar group is down to 1:48

Hindley powers on alone. Just a kilometre of climbing to go now.

Attack by Vingegaard, who drops Pogačar. Vingegaard is taking the Tour by the scruff of the neck at the first opportunity.

Vingegaard is already out of sight for Pogačar. A huge attack.

Just 300 metres to the top for Hindley. Vingegaard is sweeping up numerous riders from the early break.

Hindley crosses the summit of Cote de Marie-Blanque in first place, but his pursuers are close behind, and Vingegaard is only 1:09 back.

Pogacar, meanwhile, is already 41 seconds back on Vingegaard.

Kuss has now caught up with Pogačar, who is plodding along steadily and who crosses the Marie Blanque with 38 seconds disadvantage on Vingegaard.

15 kilometres to go

Hindley has less than a minute on Vingegaard.

The situation

Lead: Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgohe) At 46 seconds: Felix Gall (AG2R-Citroen) At 59 seconds: Jonas Vingegaard group At 1:49: Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

Vingegaard and co. are closing on Gall and will be looking to chase down Hindley if they can. Quite apart from the stage win and distancing Pogacar, there are time bonuses at stake here.

Pogacar meanwhile is limiting the gap on Vingegaard to a minute. It's not the end of his Tour bid by a long shot, but as things stand, after such a great start to the Tour for UAE, it's a serious defeat nonetheless.

Pogačar is descending with just Kuss for company, who  - logically - is not going to come through to help limit the gap.

The Vingegaard group, also containing Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) catches Gall and the Dane asks Gall for some help. He doesn't get a positive response, but Ciccone comes through for a few metres. Vingegaard, in any case, hardly needs any help at this point - he's flying.

Four kilometres to go

Hindley has 42 seconds advantage. It's going to be tight.

Pogacar is joined by a much larger group including yellow jersey Adam Yates. His time loss on Vingegaard has now risen to 1:15.

Vingegaard is powering on at his front group, even if the stage win is out of his grasp now.

Hindley is inside the final barriers and still has 38 seconds. It's flat all the way now to the finish.

Hindley is within sight of his first Tour stage victory, but there's no sign of him dropping his pace to celebrate.

Hindley crosses the line to take the stage and the yellow jersey.

Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) wins stage 5 of the 2023 Tour de France

Ciccone takes second, about 32 seconds back, and Gall is third. No time bonus for Vingegaard, who's fifth, but he's taken a big step towards a much bigger prize today.

Tadej Pogačar crosses the line over a minute down on Vingegaard. A very different outcome to how the Tour's last finish in Laruns played out for him.

This is Hindley's first ever Tour de France, and it could hardly have gone better for the 2022 Giro d'Italia winner so far. As he memorably said in last year's Giro, he's "not here to put socks on centipedes, mate."

And here's a shot of Jai Hindley crossing the finish line

Tour de France 2023 stage 5: Jai Hindley celebrates the victory

Some words from Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) stage winner and new leader of the Tour de France: "I was sort of improvising out there and enjoying some bike racing and I just managed to find myself in that group. I really enjoyed it out there today." "It's really incredible, and I have no words. The guys in the radio were screaming about just riding to the line and I couldn't really hear so much what was happening. I wanted to gain as much time as possible  and also the stage and I found myself in the yellow jersey. So that's pretty cool too. As for possibly going for the win, Hindley says, "I didn't really know what to expect. It's my first Tour and it's hard to come here with such massive ambitions already. But for sure I wanted to come here and be competitive and have some form of success. I've just won a stage of the Tour de France mate - this one's for them, my girlfriend, everyone that's supported me. I'm really thankful for that."

And here's the new GC, again via FirstCycling . There have been a few changes...

2023 Tour de France: GC top 10 after stage 5

Some words from Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), fifth on the stage and second overall,  but looking well on track to fight for a second straight Tour: "We didn't have to pull in the bunch which was good for us, then on the final climb I felt good, and I said to Sepp [Kuss] to go to the front to start pushing and he did, then I attacked." "I just felt good, and then I looked at myself, and if I felt good then I'd try to attack." As for how much of a blow this is to Tadej Pogačar and his rivals, Vingegaard said,  "you have to ask them, but I know Tadej, he never gives up, it'll be a fight all the way to Paris."

And here's the moment when Jonas Vingegaard crossed the line at Laruns.

2023 Tour de France stage 5: defending GC champion Jonas Vingegaard crosses the lineard

Some words from Tadej Pogačar, who remains in the Best Young Rider's jersey despite his defeat: "I lost my legs a little bit in the last 500 metres of the climb and I think every day now it's going to be...I feel good, so I hope I will feel better in the next days on the bike when we go full gas." Regarding earlier in the stage and why they let Jai Hindley get such a big gap, Pogačar explained that "it was a bit hectic over the small climbs, everybody wanted to go in the breaks and there was this one moment when we couldn't close the gap immediately. A big group went away, it was not the best, but we were still going good. Jai could take the yellow but we hoped for a better result in the final climb in the main peloton." "Now I know my limits, but my motivation is pretty high, and we can go 'day by day', pretty strong."

Pogačar was not the only UAE Team Emirates rider to suffer on the first big mountains day of the Tour. Here's a photo of Adam Yates coming home in 15th place, and who lost the overall lead after four stages today.

2023 Tour de France stage 5: winner and new leader Jai Hindley

Pogačar wasn't the only former Tour de France winner who had a tough day on Wednesday. 2019 champion Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) completed the course more than three minutes down and is now 20th overall.

Tour de France 2023 stage 5: Egan Bernal completes the course more than three minutes down

Quite apart from Jai Hindley taking over as GC leader, in the secondary classifications, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) remains in first place in the points, Felix Gall (AG2R-Citröen) moves into top spot in the mountains competition, Pogačar is  still ahead in the Best Young Rider's rankings, and Jumbo-Visma are still in control of the teams.

So what's next? Running from Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque for 144.9 kilometres,  stage 6 of the Tour de France on Thursday is the second one in the Pyrenees and has the mid-race ascent of the Tourmalet, the most formidable ascent of the entire mountain range, as the main challenge. It then concludes with the long, grinding ascent to Cauterets. Oh, and it has nearly 4,000 metres of vertical climbing, so it is almost certainly even tougher than stage 5, particularly as it's the second straight day in the mountains.

There are numerous questions to be answered on Thursday, starting with whether Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) can hold onto the lead. He has a good advantage over Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and the Australian's already excellent mountain credentials have been amply reconfirmed today. While he did take the lead from a break and he won't exactly be able to fly under the radar at all tomorrow, as a former Giro d'Italia winner and runner-up, he knows what it takes to defend a top spot in a GC race. Beyond that, it's clear that - as Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) predicted pre-race -  Vingegaard is once again the main reference point.  Whether Vingegaard wants to try and sink the Slovenian and his other rivals immediately or whether he's playing a longer game and, rather than attack again, is happy to let Hindley and Bora-Hansgrohe soak up the pressure, remains to be seen.

Yet another question concerns Pogačar. He's lost time, but is very much not out of contention. Can he bounce back in the Pyrenees, or does he need more time to find full race form before trying to counter-attack. If the  2022 Tour (and the rest of his career...) is anything to go by, the Slovenian won't be slow to chance his arm if there's any opportunity to test his rivals.

That wraps it up for Cyclingnews live coverage of stage 5, but we'll be back on Thursday for stage 6. Meantime continue to check out the site for news, analysis and other updates throughout the evening.

Tour de France Stage 5 Preview: Back to the Mountains

Elevation reenters the Tour as a factor as the peloton heads back to the mountains.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 4

Stage 5 - Pau to Laruns (162.7km) - Wednesday, July 5

After two hard days of hills in the Spanish Basque Country, Stage 5 offers no rest for the weary with the first of two stages in the Pyrenees. We usually don’t see mountains like this at this stage of the Tour, but the Tour’s opening weekend meant a first-week “jaunt” through the mountains that form the border between France and Spain was most feasible.

This is a relatively short stage (162.7km), and it starts rather gently, with about 70km of flat to rolling roads as the race heads southwest out of Pau and toward the intermediate sprint in Lanne-en-Barétous, where we should the Tour’s green jersey contenders do their best to score maximum points behind whomever has managed to escape by this point in the day.

And there’s good reason for him to go on the attack: the first of the day’s three categorized climbs is the hors catégorie Col de Soudet–the first “beyond category” climb of the 2023 Tour de France–and 20 points go to the first rider to its summit. 15.2km in length and with an average gradient of 7.2 percent, it’s the toughest climb the riders have faced so far, but with its summit more than 75km from the finish line in Laruns, the Soudet unlikely to have huge impact on Stage 5 beyond softening everyone’s legs before the finale.

stage 5 tour de france 2023 profile

The final 40km are where this stage really gets interesting, first with the Category 3 Col d'Ichère (4.2km at 7 percent) and then in a big way with the Category 1 Col de Marie Blanque (7.7km at 8.6 percent). The second half of the Marie Blanque is super-steep with pitches in the 12-13 percent range. And with its summit just 18.5km from the finish line, it’s likely to determine the stage winner.

This is a tough stage to call. It’s built in a fashion similar to Stages 1 and 2, with a tough climb (with time bonuses at the summit) relatively close to the finish line. We could see a larger peloton hit the base of the Marie Blanque together, the UAE Team Emirates and Jumbo-Visma riding tempo on the lower slopes to set up their leaders for attacks as the climb steepens, with an elite group pulling away to contest the finish in Laruns.

The General Classification is still pretty tight at the top, which means any breakaway given a long enough leash to fight for the stage win will need to contain riders too far down the GC to not pose a serious threat. That doesn’t mean the yellow jersey won’t change hands, but if it does it won’t be someone that UAE Team Emirates or Jumbo-Visma think can win the Tour.

There’s a chance of scattered thunderstorms throughout the afternoon could make things interesting on the descent of the Marie Blanque.

Riders to watch

We’ve seen lots of stages for the Tour’s puncheurs, riders who excel on short, steep climbs–climbs like the Col du Marie Blanque. Despite the fact that he’s in the yellow jersey, don’t be surprised if Great Britain’s Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) gets in the mix, alongside his brother Simon (Team Jayco AlUla). Denmark’s Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Spain’s Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious), Canada’s Michael Woods (Israel-PremierTech), and Belgium’s Dylan Teuns (Israel-PremierTech) are all good bets to win a stage like this one.

If a breakaway goes the distance, our pick is American Mateo Jorgenson (Movistar), who finished fourth on a stage with a similar finale in last year’s Tour. The 24-year-old has lost enough time so far that he’s not considered a GC threat. This is the perfect opportunity for him to take his first grand tour stage victory.

And of course, given how eager they’ve been to renew their rivalry, keep an eye on Pogačar and Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma). With time bonuses available at the top of the Marie Blanque, we could see them go on the attack as they did at the end of Stages 1 and 2, possibly setting-up someone else to win the stage in the process.

When to Watch

With another explosive finale expected , this is a stage you won’t want to miss. We’ll be tuning in around 10:35 a.m. EDT to see the riders hit the Category 3 Col d'Ichère which serves as a fitting prelude to the Col du Marie Blanque about 10km later. The stage is expected to finish about an hour later.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

UCI Men Press Release Day 5

Sevilla rides up gila monster to victory, hoehn wins overall tour of the gila.

Óscar Sevilla (Team Medellín – EPM) climbed to victory Sunday on the Gila Monster Stage 5 Tour of the Gila while his breakaway companion Alex Hoehn took the overall red leader’s jersey and solidified a win for his Above and Beyond Cancer Cycling Team.

Heiner Parra Bustamante (Canel’s – ZEROUNO) ascended his way into the polka dot king of the mountains jersey while Cade Bickmore (Project Echelon Racing) and Caleb Classen (Team California) left with the green sprint leader’s jersey and the white best young rider jersey, respectively.

But it was 46-year-old Sevilla, a Spanish and Colombian climber and former best young rider in the Tour de France, and 25-year-old Hoehn, who hails from Kansas and contended for king of the mountains at the 2019 Tour of California, battling until the finale.

“I think we gave a show today, and all the people who followed the race were very entertained and excited,” Sevilla said. “In the end, I came with Alex, a great young, strong rider, and I fought until the end, but I could only win the stage, not the overall race. But I am very happy, I think the feeling is very good. Winning is a lot of happiness for me, and second place in the general classification is also very good. So we are very happy, the whole Medellín team, very grateful to the Tour of Gila, and we will come back next year.”

Hoehn said his team’s job was to keep his teammate, the overall race leader Torbjørn Røed (Above and Beyond Cancer), safe, but things shaped up differently.

“I was supposed to mark a couple riders, Sevilla being one of them, and once he went, I went with him, and that ended up being the break of the day,” Hoehn said. “The Medellín team worked really hard and they did really well, and then I pretty much just had to hang on Sevilla’s wheel and not lose any time on the finish in order to get the overall win. I just did some calculations and figured out we would be able to stay with the win. At the end of the day it was just an awesome bike race with one of the best riders in the world and I was just really stoked to be a part of it.”

The 100-mile race with nearly 10,000 feet of elevation gain rolled out from downtown Silver City, and attacks began from the second the whistle blew.

As the riders approached the first sprint point, a breakaway formed, and Brayan Sánchez (Team Medellín – EPM) took first place points. He did the same miles later on the second intermediate sprint, but the points gap was too much to close, and Bickmore retained the green jersey.

A group of nine formed a break right after the first sprint, about nine miles into the race, and by mile 20, they had a gap of two minutes and 10 seconds to the field and 20 seconds to a chase group. About 10 miles later, the chase caught the break, increasing the number of escapees to 19.

With three riders from Medellín and three from Canel’s the break, the overall race lead appeared to be in jeopardy for Røed, but Hoehn also was in the break keeping an eye on things.

As the 19 riders began the long ascent to the second king of the mountains point, many began to fall off and were sucked back into the field. A selection of Sevilla and his teammates Robigzon Oyola and Sánchez along with Hoehn, Parra Bustamante and Conn McDunphy (SoCalCycling.com) was made.

As the group grinded toward the KOM, Parra Bustamante dropped his five companions to score maximum points toward the polka dot jersey. Sevilla and Hoehn clawed their way back and left everyone else behind.

The three stuck together over the next KOM point where Parra Bustamante again put on a climbing clinic. But when he hit the descent, the smaller-stature rider, who had hidden behind tall McDunphy earlier, didn’t have anyone to pull him downhill. He lost time and separated from Sevilla and Hoehn.

Behind them, the field continued to lose time, going from two minutes to three to four. Because Hoehn was only one minute and three seconds back to the overall lead, he became the virtual race leader on the road, with his companion Sevilla only six seconds behind him for GC.

The two pressed on with time bonuses — 10 seconds for first place and six seconds for second place — to be had at the finish line as well. But even if the two came across the line together and if Sevilla won, he would still be four seconds behind Hoehn for the overall lead. He would have to put time into Hoehn.

But only one Category 3 climb to Pinos Altos remained, and it wasn’t enough to shake Hoehn. But Sevilla had enough pickup to cross the line first. Røed and the rest of the gang finished too late for an overall race win.

Parra Bustamante breathed a sigh of relief when he found out he won the king of the mountains jersey for the second consecutive year.

“Well, I am very happy to have once again taken the lead to be the mountain champion for another year,” Parra Bustamante said. “This is gratifying for me. We gave everything today. We went out with a positive mindset to get that jersey, to get this mountain title, as we are known for being very good climbers. We tried from the beginning to the end, gave it our all, and I want to thank the team, all my teammates. They motivated me, were always very attentive to me. I thank them for this mountain jersey, these points are for them and for the whole team.”

Bickmore said he was happy to keep the jersey after a tough day.

“I just had to finish the stage within the time cut because I had enough of a lead where nobody could get me with the points on the line today,” Bickmore said. “So pretty simple task but definitely difficult. So, really excited to keep the green jersey, keep it in the team for another year at Tour of the Gila. It was really good to follow up on Tyler [Stites’] win in the green jersey last year.”

Classen held on to the best young rider jersey for all five days and stepped up on the final podium of Tour of the Gila to put an exclamation point on his lead.

“I think I’m the only guy to wear a jersey for the whole race,” Classen said. “I was super nervous about it, honestly. I struggled really hard at this stage last year; I lost like 20 minutes, This is a huge relief, and it’s been a goal all year to win the white jersey here. I knew I could do it, and I couldn’t have done it without my team today. They were keeping me fed all day, getting me where I needed to be, positioned into the climbs. They were phenomenal, and thank you for Gila for putting on this race. It’s so much fun — best race in the country I think.”

UCI Women Press Release Day 5

Killips rides to gila monster stage win, solidifies overall victory at tour of the gila.

Austin Killips (Amy D Foundation) put an exclamation point on her overall race lead Sunday by winning Stage 5 Gila Monster and taking home the overall victory at Tour of the Gila. She also climbed her way into the queen of the mountains polka dot jersey.

DNA Pro Cycling’s Shayna Powless snatched back the green sprinter’s jersey from Rylee McMullen (InstaFund Racing), while Nadia Gontova (Roxo Racing) held on to the white best young rider jersey.

But it was all eyes on the overall race lead, in which only 10 seconds separated leader Killips from Emily Ehrlich (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY24) and Ehrlich’s third stage race win of the year. But Killips put the kibosh on any triple crown for TWENTY24.

“We really wanted to get into a break,” said Amy D Foundation team director Julie Kuliecza. “We thought that there was going to be something that would go right after the second sprint point, and we wanted a rider in that break so that when Austin and the other GC riders came up to it, Austin would have someone to help them and protect them, and it worked out perfectly.”

Killips is the first openly trans woman athlete to win Tour of the Gila.

The nearly 66-mile race with nearly 5,500 feet of elevation gain rolled out from downtown Silver City and led off with an attack from Emily Newsom (Roxo Racing), who gained a 20-second advantage and enticed eight other riders to go with her.

But the field pulled them all back together within the first three miles. DNA set up Powless to win the first bonus sprint, and she did the same for the second and final bonus sprint, catapulting her into the green jersey again.

DNA continued with offense as they attacked multiple times near mile 35 to set Powless up for success. But Roxo counter-attacked and sparked a breakaway of six riders: Newsom, Holly Breck (DNA Pro Cycling), Anna Hicks (Cynisca Pro Cycling), Quiñones (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY24), Leon Ordaz (PatoBike) and Cassie Nelson (Amy D Foundation).

Over the next six miles they built a one-minute and 45-second lead over the field. Several riders attempted to bridge but to no avail. By mile 45 the field brought the gap down to 55 seconds as Amy D Foundation and PatoBike worked the front of the main field to reel the escapees in.

Killips and Marcela Prieto Castañeda (PatoBike) and teammate Lorena Villamizar Varon, along with Anet Barrera (DNA Pro Cycling), Gontova and Ehrlich took off from the field, but Barrera and Villamizar Varon dropped from the chase, leaving four to pull back the break.

The four closed in inside one kilometer to the QOM summit, and Killips and Prieto Castañeda, who was sitting one minute and 17 seconds back from the overall lead, took first and second, respectively, with Nelson following. Killips did the same on the final QOM.

The trio dropped the other lead riders and held a minimum of 25 seconds on any chasers for the rest of the race. Ehrlich made an attempt to salvage her chances to overtake the lead but couldn’t close.

Killips railed a descent to fend off Ehrlich with 10 kilometers to go. But she still also had to worry about Prieto Castañeda who was right there with her, along with Killips’ teammate, Nelson.

At 400 meters to go, Killips jumped and accelerated away from Prieto Castañeda. Killips crossed the line toward victory with Prieto in second and Nelson in third.

Ehrlich said she tried as best she could to take the overall lead, but it just wasn’t enough.

“We just smashed the climb as hard as we could,” Ehrlich said. “We caught the group at the top, but it split into three more, and I just couldn’t keep up over the top, and they stayed away until the finish. I tried to get some seconds on the descent to the finish but I just couldn’t’ make it up.”

Prieto Castañeda, who had led for the first three stages of Tour of the Gila, said she was happy to take second on the stage and on the overall lead.

“I dedicate it to my team, my family, and I am very happy to have been able to climb onto the podium,” Prieto Castañeda said. “At the end, we caught up to a breakaway, and another girl from the same winning team joined us. We worked together, and in the end, I gave it my all. It took a lot of strength, but I feel very happy.”

Powless, who robbed her green jersey back from McMullen, said her team’s lead outs were key.

“Basically, our plan was to go into today feeling ready to get as many points as possible for those sprints and try and take back the sprint jersey which we successfully did today,” Powless said. “My teammates did a really incredible job making sure I had a nice lead out going in to the first and second sprint, then also being up there as well themselves to scoop up those extra sprint points, just to keep me a little safer in the run, and it ended up working out perfectly.”

Gontova said she was happy to wear the white best young rider jersey all five days.

“Today was a super tough day, and I hoped for more on the stage, but I think the heat really got to me on the big climb, and I gave it my all on the final 25k. I am happy to finish the race in the white jersey and grateful for all the work my Roxo teammates did to help me defend it all week.”

Rockies Premium Tour from Vancouver (34 Seats)

This was an excellent trip and an amazing experience. The tour was incredibly well organized and our guides Will and Simon did a fantastic job throughout the week. Over the five days we got to see some truly beautiful sites throughout the Rockies and learn a lot about the stories and the history behind them. Even during the times where we were only driving, our tour guide Will provided us with many insights on the views around us. We got to learn about the mountains and lakes we passed by, as well as the ones we visited. Our accommodations were all very nice and conformable and the drives from place to place were beautiful sights on every road. Not only was our guide Will and excellent driver, he also would make sure to stop and slow down when someone spotted wildlife so everyone can see. Simon was a great co-pilot and always made sure to go through the bus to make sure everyone was comfortable during the long drives. Each hotel we stayed at was cozy and safe, with great locations. Both Will and Simon were very personable and kind men who were always interested in getting to know every person on this trip and ensuring they were having a good time. They both made it very easy to loosen up and get to know the other people around us, making new friends and having great experiences. Overall I had the best time on this trip, would definitely recommend and hope to go on another in the future.

Coho Tour

The tour is run well and the scenery really makes it worth it. There is a lot of time in the bus but that is too be expected and it is broken up well. The included meals and activities are lacking though and the trip is definitely weather dependent so should maybe have more back up plans otherwise.

Itinerary was great, scenery was beautiful, and our guide was fun. I was the only male in the group with my wife and 11 other females and it worked out fine. Everyone was very congenial, and the diversity of the group added to the experience. Only thing I would change would be the accommodations in Vancouver. While the hotel was fine it was very far from the downtown and sights, so we spent most of our time the last day in the van in traffic. Overall, it was a fantastic trip.

Via Railway Experience|5-Day Vancouver to Rockies Railway Full Experience Tour Departure

We enjoyed our tour very much, the sights were beautiful, staff we well informed. A highlight for us was the optional evening photographic tour. The only thing stopping me from giving five stars was the last day felt very rushed, especially at the Banff gondola as the queue to get on took half an hour and not enough time allocated to our lunch at the Lake Louise Chateau, we had to ask the waitress to bring out the dessert while we were eating the main as we only had 15 minutes until the bus left. Allocate a bit more time for those things and you will get five stars.

Depart Salt Lake City for Canyonlands National Park & Dead Horse Point State Park

5 mountains tour 2023

We’ll pick you up in Salt Lake City and begin our drive through the Wasatch mountains toward the incredible canyons of Southern Utah.  The first National Park on the docket is Canyonlands. This remote and intriguing wilderness hosts high plateaus, buttes, and mesas carved out by life-giving rivers that now lie far below. We’ll witness it all in the district known as “Island in the Sky” where we’ll hike to outstanding viewpoints.

Next we’ll stop at Dead Horse Point State Park for an incredible overlook of the mighty Colorado River.  This unique landscape has been featured in many movies and television shows such as “Thelma & Louise” and HBO’s recent series “Westworld”.

This evening we’ll arrive at our lodge in Moab and enjoy a group dinner.

Driving Time:  4 Hours Hiking:  3+ miles | Minimal elevation gain Accommodation: Hilton Moab, Red Cliffs Inn, or similar in Moab, Utah

Hiking in Arches National Park – Afternoon in Moab

5 mountains tour 2023

After a fresh breakfast included at your lodge, get ready to explore the largest concentration of natural sandstone arches in the world. Arches National Park is home to over 2,000 of these formations which have been sculpted from the rock by the erosive forces of wind and water. We’ll see the Windows, Double Arch, and take a 3-mile round-trip trek to the infamous Delicate Arch.

“A weird, lovely, fantastic object out of nature like Delicate Arch has the curious ability to remind us—like rock and sunlight and wind and wilderness—that out there is a different world, older and greater and deeper by far than ours” – Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire

We’ll stop at the visitor center in Arches before heading to Moab where you’ll have an opportunity to wander around this unique Southwest town for a couple of hours. We’ll then head back to the lodge to relax for the rest of the night.

Driving Time: Local Hiking:  3-5 miles | 700+ feet elevation gain Accommodation: Hilton Moab, Red Cliffs Inn, or similar in Moab, Utah

Explore Goblin Valley & Capitol Reef National Park

5 mountains tour 2023

This morning we have a 2 hour drive to the “alien-like” landscape of Goblin Valley State Park. This playground of rock is a guest favorite with it’s unique hoodoos—known locally as goblins—that are scattered over a former tidal plain. We’ll continue the scenic drive toward Capitol Reef National Park, named for white sandstone domes and rocky cliffs that form a barrier along a wrinkle in the surface of the Earth.

Capitol Reef National Park includes 241,904 acres of amazing red rock formations, cliffs, canyons and natural bridges. Due to the remote location, its the least visited of Utah’s National Parks, making it a rare treasure! This evening we’ll arrive to our lodge just outside of Capitol Reef National Park.

Driving Time: 3.5 Hours Hiking:  2-3 miles | 400+ feet elevation gain Accommodation: Red Sands Hotel or similar near Torrey, Utah

Witness the Hoodoos of Bryce Canyon & hike Queen’s Garden/Navajo Loop

5 mountains tour 2023

This morning after breakfast we’ll depart for Bryce Canyon National Park. Stand on the rim overlooking the Bryce Amphitheater and watch the sun slowly rise over sandstone spires, painting them orange. We’ll then venture into the basin getting up close to the otherworldly hoodoos on “The world’s best 3-mile hike”.  This trail is rated as moderate and is a wonderful way to view a variety of geology, flora, & fauna.

Later in the day we’ll head to our lodge just outside of Zion National Park. You’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the property before we have an incredible dinner at one of our local favorite restaurants.

Driving Time: 3 Hours Hiking:  3-4 miles | 600+ feet elevation gain Accommodation: Driftwood Lodge or similar

Towering Sandstone Cliffs & Virgin River Oasis of Zion National Park – Return to Salt Lake City

5 mountains tour 2023

Today we explore our 5 th  National Park in 5 days, Zion National Park! Known as “Mukuntuweap” by the Southern Paiute, red cliff walls tower 2000 feet above the lush canyon floor as the Virgin River winds peacefully through. Having once carved out the surrounding landscape, the river now nourishes serene cottonwood groves and golden meadows where deer and turkey forage.

After several hours of optional hiking and exploring, we depart from Zion National Park and begin our return 4.5-hour drive to Salt Lake City.

*Due to weather variability, we refer to the conditions provided by Mother Nature when deciding which hike will be preferred. Potential activities include: Upper Emerald Pools, Observation Point, The Narrows or similar.

Driving Time: 5 Hours Hiking:  3-6 miles | Minimal elevation gain

2024 Zurich Classic odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the zurich classic of new orleans 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

rory-mcilroy-pga-golf-getty-images.jpg

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay look to reclaim some team magic when they pair back up for the 2024 Zurich Classic. The PGA Tour's yearly team event tees off Thursday at TPC Louisiana in New Orleans, and 80 two-man teams will be in attendance for tee off on Thursday. Schauffele and Cantlay were the winning duo back in 2022 and they are the 5-1 favorites on the 2024 Zurich Classic odds board. Should you back this pair of California natives with your 2024 Zurich Classic picks? Or should you back Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry at 8-1 odds?

Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala are listed at 11-1 in the lastest 2024 Zurich Classic odds, and Collin Morkiawa and Kurt Kitayama follow at 16-1. Defending Zurich Classic champions Nick Hardy and David Riley are 80-1 longshots to have repeat success. Before making any 2024 Zurich Classic picks, be sure t o see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Zurich Classic 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Zurich Classic predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Zurich Classic 2024: McIlroy and Lowry, who've combined for 26 wins on the PGA Tour, barely crack the top five. McIlroy is set to play in his fourth consecutive event when he tees off at TPC Louisiana. He's failed to crack the top-10 in seven of his eight starts on the PGA Tour this season, while Lowry has finished T-19 or worse in six of his past eight events.

Both players have struggled mightily on the green this season. McIlroy enters the 2024 Zurich Classic ranked 78th in strokes gained: putting (0.119) and 72nd in putting average (1.758), a big reason why he ranks 98th in scoring average (70.44). Lowry, meanwhile, ranks 99th in strokes gained: putting (-0.012) and 143rd in putts per round (29.38), which doesn't bode well for their chances to finish on top of the leaderboard this week.

Another surprise: Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard, 35-1 longshots, make a strong run at the title. The twin brothers have a much better chance to win it all than their odds imply, so they're a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

The Danish twosome has been making headlines abroad for years now, becoming the first brothers to ever win events in consecutive weeks on the European Tour back in 2021. They are now making noise on the PGA Tour as Nicolai finished second at the Farmers Insurance Open back in January and finished T16 in his first ever Masters appearance earlier this month. Nicolai also played this event last year, so his experience makes the duo an under-the-radar competitor at the 2024 Zurich Classic.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Zurich Classic picks

The model is also targeting three other teams with odds of 35-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Zurich Classic, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Zurich Classic 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Zurich Classic leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters.
