Heading into the European Film Market, Paris-based company Indie Sales has released the official teaser trailer for Richard the Stork 2 , directed by Mette Tange and Benjamin Quabeck. The film will have its market premiere at the EFM in Berlin (Feb. 16-22) and is expected to ruffle feathers among buyers, as pre-sales are already inked in more than 20 territories.

Produced by Knudsen Pictures and co-produced by Walking The Dog and Den Siste Skilling, the film is a sequel to Richard the Stork (released in North America as A Stork’s Journey and also known as Little Bird’s Big Adventure ), which was distributed widely worldwide, sold to 155 countries and grossed over $20 million worldwide.

Indie Sales is well-known for My Life as a Zucchini , the high-profile Oscar and Golden Globe nominated feature which sold in more than 80 territories. The company increasingly focuses on acquiring big-budget animation but while continuing its support for prestigious arthouse animated films.

Film Synopsis: Richard, the daring sparrow who was adopted by a stork family, is enjoying wintering at the Great Lake in Northern Africa when he realizes he won’t be the one to lead the flock back north. Therefore, he runs away to travel on his own. On his journey he meets Samia and her sparrow flock, who are being held captive by evil marabous under the control of the greedy peacock Zamano.

The only chance of freedom for the sparrows is to solve a riddle and find the Great Jewel, which will call upon teamwork, trust and most of all skills learnt from storks, also known as “spork” (sparrow + stork) skills!

The sequel features a score composed by Eric Neveux, well-known for Poly , Samsam and Nicholas on Holiday , along with original songs written by Canadian songwriter Mocky (Dominic Salole).

The film is set for a theatrical release in Germany on March 23 with Wild Bunch Germany. Paradis Films will follow with a French release on April 12, followed by a Norwegian theatrical release with SF Studios on April 21.

Richard the Stork 2 was produced at animation studio Walking the Dog in Belgium, Mideu Films in Halle, Germany as well as at Apparat.Studio in Bergen and Nordisk Film Shortcut in Oslo, Norway. The film is co-produced with BNP Paribas Fortis Film Finance, Mediefondet Zefyr, Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Magellan Films, Senator Film Produktion, in collaboration with Nordisk Film Shortcut Oslo.

Production received support from the German Federal Film Fund, German Federal Film Board, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, Kuratorium junger deutscher Film, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, The Tax Shelter of the Belgian Government, Screen Flanders, Screen Brussels, Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), Berrymark NV, Norwegian Film Institute and Creative Europe.

Indie Sales Unveils Animation Sequel ‘Richard the Stork 2,’ Seals Major Deals (EXCLUSIVE)

Paris-based company Indie Sales (“My Life as a Zucchini”) has scored a raft of pre-sales on “Richard the Stork 2,” the sequel of the hit animated feature about a daring little sparrow that traveled to 155 countries.

The sequel follows Richard, a sparrow who was adopted by a stork family and is wintering at the Great Lake in Northern Africa when he realizes that he won’t be the one to lead the flock back North. Richard decides to fly away to travel on his own and crosses paths with Samia and her sparrow flock who are being held captive by evil marabous under the control of the greedy peacock Zamano.

“Richard the Stork 2” reteams Kristine M.I. Knudsen and Lan Rommel at Berlin-based Knudsen Pictures, Eric Goossens and Anton Roebben at Walking the Dog in Belgium, and Bergen-based Den Siste Skilling.

Set to premiere during the first half of 2023, the sequel boasts a score composed by Eric Neveux, whose credits include “Poly,” “Samsam” and “Nicholas on Holiday.”

Indie Sales’ track record in animation includes “My Life as a Zucchini,” which earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and traveled to more than 80 territories.

The company is looking to continue acquiring big-budget animated features along with prestigious arthouse animated films. Recent pickups include Alain Ughetto’s critically acclaimed stop-motion feature “No Dogs or Italians Allowed,” which received two awards at Annecy, including the Jury Prize.

Orphaned at birth and raised by storks, teenage sparrow Richard believes he is one of them. But when time comes to migrate to Africa, his stork family is forced to reveal his true identity and leave him behind in the forest, since he is not a migratory bird and would not survive the journey. Determined to prove he is a stork after all, Richard ventures south on his own. But only with the help of Olga, an eccentric owl with an imaginary friend and Kiki, a narcissistic, disco-singing parakeet, does he stand a chance to reach his goal and learn to accept who he really is.

Stork parents are nurturing, openhearted, and responsible.

Violence & Scariness

In an early scene, a mom and dad sparrow are attacked by a bear, killed off camera. Birds confront assorted predators: a bear, honey badgers, bats, a scorpion, spiders, a mean human bar owner, an airplane. These predators are portrayed with fangs, bared teeth, roars, and ferocity. The birds plummet from great heights, run in fear for their lives, and are caught in a rockslide and a rainstorm. Several instances of birds appearing to be dead and finally being revived.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that A Stork's Journey is an enjoyable story about a young bird desperate to find his adopted family as they migrate south for the winter. Abandonment is a key element of the tale, and there are several sad moments. The leading character is orphaned early in the film. Expect lots of cartoon action and suspense as the movie's likable, quirky characters encounter a profusion of dangerous enemies (fierce honey badgers, bats, spiders, a bear) and fly into scary situations (storms, a rockslide, an airplane, steep falls). In numerous scenes, it appears that one of the heroic team may not survive; each lies still, lifeless, until eventually he or she is revived. This English-language adaptation of a European animated film finds the migrating birds on their way to Africa rather than the Southern U.S., Mexico, and South America, the destinations of North American birds. Hidden character

What's the story.

Richard (voiced predominantly by Drake Bell ), a baby sparrow, emerges from his shell only to find an empty nest in A STORK'S JOURNEY. He's rescued by a loving mother stork who brings him back to her flock. Richard, sure that he too is a stork, grows up in the wings of the family, nurtured and loved. Only Claudius, the father stork, is reluctant to accept him. When the flock prepares to fly south from Europe for the winter, Claudius, concerned that the little sparrow will not survive the high altitudes, refuses to take their "stepson" with them. The sparrow awakens to find his family gone. At first, he is inconsolable but, in a flurry of energy and bravado, determines to follow them. The journey to Africa is long and treacherous, but Richard is one lucky bird. He meets Olga ( Jane Lynch ), a lonely pygmy owl, and her imaginary friend, Oleg. Then, Kiki ( Mark Thompson ), a stagestruck, trickster parakeet, joins the troupe. The unstoppable threesome -- plus Oleg -- is on its way. Suspense escalates as numerous missteps, including an unexpected detour to Italy, and all manner of predators obstruct their flight path. Will the unconventional flock make their way to the Great Lake in Africa where they hope to find Richard's family? Will the stork family be happy to see them? Do birds really fly south for the winter?

Is It Any Good?

Inventive characters, a straightforward story, lots of comedy, and bright, cheery animation should keep young audiences engaged by this English-language import from Europe. The filmmakers attempt to keep older kids and grown-ups involved, too -- a running bit about "on-line" birds, who sit on electrical wires, is very funny. A Stork's Journey deals with finding one's place in the world and the elements that can turn disparate folks (or species) into a family. However, it isn't a gentle journey. Scary-looking predators and life-threatening situations come up frequently, and there are sad moments in which it appears that one or more of the heroes will not make it. Those instances, and the fact that the film feels a bit long and occasionally repetitive, means the movie is not appropriate for little ones or super-sensitive kids.
