Peugeot says that the 48V Hybrid engine fitted into this new 3008 Hybrid 136 e-DCS6 is a great choice if you're not quite ready for the Electric Vehicle (EV) revolution - and there's some truth in that. You can't plug this powerplant in, but it delivers a combination of value, performance and frugality that 3008 fans will like. And it's vastly cheaper than the all-electric E-3008 alternative.

All the headlines with Peugeot's third generation 3008 tend to be of the full-electric E-3008 model, but the version that will actually sell in real numbers is this one, the Hybrid 136 e-DCS6. You can't plug it in, but that makes it lighter and cheaper. And if you still fancied a diesel in a mid-sized lifestyle SUV of this kind, the efficiency stats here might make you think again.

It shares its self-charging Hybrid engine with its Stellantis Group cousin and close rival, Citroen's C5 Aircross Hybrid 136 - which is significantly cheaper thanks to Citroen's new pricing policy. So, the 3008 will need its more arresting looks and more avant-garde cabin. Its reasonable value compared to significant Hybrid rivals from other brands though and Peugeot expects that for the foreseeable future, this will continue to be the 3008 variant of choice for many customers. Let's see why.

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid: On The Road

In principle, this is one of those 48V Hybrid systems merely designed to allow the car to run solely on electric power when manoeuvring or under very light throttle loads. In practice though, Peugeot says this 3008 Hybrid 136 e-DCS6 can run without fossil fuel for up to 50% of the time on the kind of low-speed commuting journeys that the majority of drivers will typically do. The 48V system is based around a 28bhp electric motor embedded into a purpose-designed dual clutch 6-speed auto gearbox. The main source of forward motion though, is the brand's familiar three cylinder 1.2-litre turbocharged Puretech petrol engine, which contributes to a total output of 134bhp, facilitating a rest to 62mph time of 10.0s en route to 124mph. With just 230Nm of torque available though, towing is unlikely to be this car's forte (the braked towing weight is 1,250kgs).

You'll need to make frequent use of this Peugeot's 'Eco' drive mode to get anywhere near the frugality figures the brand claims; unlike in rival Toyota Hybrids, there's no button to force the car into EV mode. There's brake regen harvesting set-up to feed energy back into the 48V system's battery (which sits under the front passenger seat), but there are no selectable options to change the regen level.

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid: Design And Build

If you choose this third generation 3008, it'll probably primarily be because you like the way it looks; the sleek fastback styling, the distinctive slim 3D rear light panel and the unusual 'cat's ear' rear spoiler. Unlike most of its EV rivals, this model hasn't abandoned a front grille; here it's a shimmering appendage with a '3-claw'-style graphic from the brand's 9X8 race car. This is a bigger 3008 than its predecessor, 54mm wider and around 100mm longer than before, though it's still a little shorter than a rival Volkswagen ID.4. There are few body lines and Range Rover-like hidden waistline seals.

And inside? Well Peugeot isn't going to abandon its unusual 'i-Cockpit' dashboard design approach - nor should it - but it can certainly evolve this approach, and has here. The previous dinky little low-set wheel is retained but above it there's now a gently curving 21-inch screen that doubles as a driver display and an infotainment monitor. It's been mounted so as to seemingly 'float' above the dashboard and stretches from the centre console to the A-pillar. As in the old car, there are configurable 'i-Toggle' haptic buttons, but Peugeot has doubled their number to ten. These can be set to deal with basic things like cabin temperature or fan speed; or maybe more eclectic things like reserving one to call a particular person on your phone. It all feels quite high end - the fascia is wrapped in grey textile, beautifully back-lit and highlighted by curved metallic inserts.

As for the back seat, well the fastback roofline obviously doesn't help headroom, but this MK3 model's 64mm increase in wheelbase length should mean there's a little more leg space. Out back, there's a 520-litre boot.

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid: Specification And Trim Levels

The Hybrid 136 e-DSC6 model is available with both of the main 3008 trim levels - 'Allure' and 'GT'.

'Allure' trim includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, cruise control, body-coloured accents for the front grille and keyless entry. Plus ambient lighting linked to the drive modes, a wireless smartphone charging pad and wireless 'Apple CarPlay' and 'Android Auto' smartphone-mirroring.

'GT' spec upgrades you to 20-inch wheels and adds a contrasting black roof and rear spoiler, as well as a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, pixel LED headlights with adaptive high beams, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functions, a hands-free opening tailgate and front parking sensors. Each spec level can be specified with a choice of three different options packs.

As for safety, all models get 'Front Collision Warning' autonomous braking, plus 'Lane Keeping Assist' with road edge detection. But you'll need to avoid base trim to get 'High Beam Assist' and 'Blind Spot Monitoring'. All the really choice features are reserved for top 'GT' trim, which comes with 'Lane Positioning Assist', a more advanced emergency braking system and 'Adaptive Cruise Control with stop & go'.

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid: Cost Of Driving

Peugeot reckons that this Hybrid 136 e-DSC6 model's 48V mild hybrid petrol engine technology reduces fuel consumption by 15%, with these savings mostly being achieved during urban driving, where as we told you in our 'On The Road' section, the brand claims the car can run on just electric power for up to 50% of the time. Motorway efficiency remains unchanged.

3008 models equipped with the 48V Hybrid powertrain have a specific display embedded into the 'i-Cockpit' instrument screen. The digital display shows 100% electric driving (speedometer in blue), the flow of energy in the system, the battery charge level, its operating status via a power meter (Charge, Eco, Power) and the percentage of distance travelled in electric mode at any one time or at the end of the journey. Expect 53.3mpg on the combined cycle and up to 120g/km of CO2.

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid: Summary

We wondered when Peugeot was eventually going to replace its venerable long-running 1.2-litre three cylinder Puretech petrol unit. In the event, for the time being anyway, all its actually done is to add a Hybrid system to it, built into a new 6-speed auto gearbox. The brand reckons that's all that was needed and in this form, the 3008 is certainly a very complete package.

We're impressed by the efficiency on offer here and the smarter looks of this third generation model are a definite step forward, as is the cabin media tech. It's just a question of whether you can get on with the unusual i-Cockpit dashboard design. If you're smitten by the 3008, this is probably the one to choose.

ACC takes the stress out of highway driving by automatically adjusting your speed to match the car in front of you. It also helps maintain a safe following distance, making your drive more relaxing and secure.

How ACC works

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses a smart team of sensors. Most systems rely on a combination of a radar and a camera, depending on the carmaker. The radar acts like a super-sensitive echolocation system, sending out signals that bounce off the car in front of you to measure how far away it is. The camera works like an extra set of eyes, picking up visual details to confirm what the radar detects. Together, they create a more accurate picture of the road ahead.

One of the biggest perks of ACC is that it can help you avoid collisions . If the system detects a slowing car ahead or a potential hazard, it'll typically warn you with a light on your dashboard and an audible beep . If the system senses you're not responding and a collision is imminent, some ACCs can automatically apply the brakes to help slow you down.

Buyer’s guide to the Peugeot 3008

Here’s what you need to know about the stylish 3008 suv.

The second-generation 3008 proved to be a turning point for Peugeot, with this mid-size SUV representing a step upmarket, both in terms of style and quality. 

Peugeot’s also recently revised it further, introducing an even bolder design and additional technology to give it a more modern feel. At the same time, it’s still pleasant to drive, efficient and offers a generous amount of interior space. 

Here’s what you need to know about the Peugeot 3008…

What powertrains are available on the Peugeot 3008?

With petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrids available on the Peugeot 3008, there is no shortage of options on offer. 

Let’s start with the petrol, which is a turbocharged 128bhp 1.2-litre unit available with a choice of a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s a pretty good all-rounder, with a 9.3-second 0-60mph time and a fuel economy figure of up to 48mpg. 

As for diesel, there’s a 128bhp 1.5-litre unit offered, which again gets the choice of a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. Peugeot claims it can return up to 60mpg, making it a very efficient option if you do plenty of miles, while it can take the 3008 to 60mph in 10.6 seconds. 

Next up are the plug-in hybrids. Both use the same 1.6-litre petrol engine as their base, with a front-wheel-drive 222bhp option available alongside a range-topping 296bhp four-wheel-drive model, which is known as the Hybrid 4. This latter version is especially brisk, going from 0-60mph in under six seconds. Peugeot also claims they can travel for up to 39 miles on electricity, resulting in a fuel economy of up to 200mpg (though you will need to do the bulk of your miles on electric for this) and CO2 emissions of just 31g/km. 

What trim levels are offered?

Peugeot offers a broad range of trim levels on its 3008, with equipment highlights and prices as follows.

Active Premium – from £28,690

All 3008s come with plenty of equipment, with even entry-level versions coming with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control and an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, electric folding mirrors, cruise control and an excellent 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. 

Allure – from £30,290

Next up, the Allure gains more stylish 18-inch alloy wheels, polished stainless steel door trim inserts, tinted windows and a larger 10-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation. You also get lane keep assist, a driver attention alert and blind spot monitoring, along with LED interior lighting and half leather seats. 

Allure Premium – from £30,990

The Allure Premium features keyless entry and start, a fabric-effect dashboard, blue ambient interior lighting and aluminum roof rails.

GT – from £32,790

Stylish GT models bring gloss black 18-inch alloy wheels, a black roof, twin exhaust trim and full LED headlights with an integrated ‘fog mode’. It also comes with a perforated leather steering wheel, aluminium pedals and a range of additional safety kit – including adaptive cruise control, an advanced autonomous emergency braking system and lane positioning assist. 

GT Premium – from £36,290

Right at the top of the range, the GT Premium comes with larger 19-inch alloy wheels, a Focal sound system and Alcantara and leather seats. You also get a 360-degree camera system, self-parking functionality and an electric boot. 

What about personalisation?

With each 3008 trim level offering a different look, there’s certainly decent scope for making your Peugeot stand out. The colour range on it isn’t the most extensive, though bold Vertigo Blue and Ultimate Red shades sit alongside more conventional black, white and grey. 

You can, however, choose the alloy wheels in a range of finishes, while a ‘Black Pack’ is available on GT models, and brings a full ‘blacked-out’ look for a reasonable £400. Inside, you can choose a full Mistral Leather interior, while a Nappa red leather package is available too – albeit at a rather steep £200. 

More conventional optional extras available include a £900 panoramic sunroof and Night Vision technology – which is able to pick up any hazards in the road with its heat-sensing cameras –  for £1,300. Advanced Grip Control, which helps to provide greater traction in poor conditions and terrains is also available for £470.

Cruise control

System which automatically maintains the speed of the vehicle at the value programmed by the driver, without any action on the accelerator pedal.

The cruise control is switched on manually: it requires a minimum vehicle speed of 25 mph (40 km/h) and the engagement of:

- fourth gear on the manual gearbox, - second gear in sequential mode on the electronic gear control gearbox or automatic gearbox, - position A on the electronic gear control gearbox or D on the automatic gearbox.

The cruise control is switched off manually or by pressing the brake or clutch pedal or on triggering of the ESP system for safety reasons.

It is possible to exceed the programmed speed temporarily by pressing the accelerator pedal.

To return to the programmed speed, simply release the accelerator pedal.

Switching off the ignition cancels any programmed speed value.

The controls of this system are grouped together on stalk A .

Programming

Turn dial 1 to the "CRUISE" position: the cruise control mode is selected but is not switched on (OFF/Pause).

Set the programmed speed by accelerating to the required speed, then press button 2 or 3 (e.g.: 70 mph (110 km/h)).

You can then change the programmed speed using buttons 2 and 3 :

- by + or - 1 mph (km/h) = short press, - by + or - 5 mph (km/h) = long press, - in steps of + or - 5 mph (km/h) = maintained press.

Switch off the cruise control by pressing button 4 : the display confirms that it has been switched off (OFF/Pause).

Switch the cruise control back on by pressing button 4 again.

Exceeding the programmed speed

Intentional or unintentional exceeding of the programmed speed results in flashing of this speed in the screen.

Return to the programmed speed, by means of intentional or unintentional deceleration of the vehicle, automatically cancels the flashing of the speed.

Return to normal driving

Turn dial 1 to the "0" position: the cruise control mode is deselected. The display returns to the distance recorder.

Operating fault

In the event of a cruise control malfunction, the speed is cleared resulting in flashing of the dashes.

2008 Adaptive Cruise Control system - First detailed information

Sounds like a good system for many people. Still not anything that will make me want to purchase a new one. Especially with me rarely running into another car on the highway here, but I can see it being very usefull in cali, or the other states.  

Thanks for the new information, RS. It's interesting, indeed, but all the caveats listed are enought to make my head swim and lose interest in the upcoming system for the 2008 models. The bottom line is still captured in this point: "It is always the responsibility of the driver to be attentive of road, traffic, weather conditions, vehicle speed, distance to the vehicle ahead, and most importantly brake operation. Safe operation of the vehicle under all road conditions is still the driver’s responsibility." Still, thanks for letting us know about another upcoming safety feature that will definitely appeal to many drivers. bruno  

RS now that the 2008 are out and the active cruise control is in the units, is there any new information about retrofitting the 2007 300c. I am think since they where suppose to come with this option a lot of the components might already be in place.  

Due to the complexity and integration of the system, not to mention the new '08 Bus system, I would say it would be absolutely impossible.  

ACC is more of a gimmick than anything. It is really only effective if you drive on many very open roads with few stops and interstates with very light traffic. I had it on my '01 Lexus LS430 and had almost no chance to ever use it. It's not worth paying extra to get it.  

It's too bad this doesn't include collision avoidance where the sensor warns you to brake if the car in front of you suddenly stops *WHILE* the ACC is off.  

With advancements in technology such as this, I can't help but think we can't be too far away from onboard sensors that will control speed and steering using "guides" implanted within the highway lanes that will allow a driver to set a destination and then let the cars computer take over while they take a nap or enjoy a beer in the back while watching a DVD (or maybe even post a few threads to the 300C forum!) :scared:  

I don't think we'll see that kind of technology in the next 50 years. It would be waaayyy to costly to set up the millions of roads in this country for that and too costly to get cars to do it. Plus, people like to drive their cars, not get driven by their cars. I think you'll see flying cars, like on the Jetsons, before you would see cars being controlled by sensors on the road.  

FYI, the feature is documented in the 2007 owners manual that you can download from the Chrysler site.  

I heard that they may be coming out with lights on the outside of the car that the driver could utilize for "directional signals". There was also mention of something called the "flux capacitor" or something like that...

Cruise Control – Specific Recommendations

The cruise control function does not guarantee compliance with the maximum authorised speed and the safety distance between vehicles, the driver remains responsible for their driving.

In the interest of public safety, only use cruise control if the traffic conditions enable vehicles to drive at a steady speed and maintain an adequate safety distance.

Remain vigilant while cruise control is activated. If you press and hold one of the speed setting modification buttons, your vehicle may change speed very abruptly.

When descending a steep hill, the cruise control system cannot prevent the vehicle from exceeding the set speed. Brake if necessary to control the vehicle speed.

On steep climbs or when towing, the set speed may not be reached or maintained.

Exceeding the programmed speed setting You can temporarily exceed the speed setting by pressing the accelerator pedal (the programmed speed flashes).

To return to the speed setting, release the accelerator pedal (when the set speed is reached again, the displayed speed stops flashing)..

Operating limits Never use the system in the following situations:

• In an urban area with the risk of pedestrians crossing the road. In heavy traffic (except versions with the Stop & Go function).
• On winding or steep roads.
• On slippery or flooded roads.
• In poor weather conditions.
• In the event of restricted visibility for the driver.
• Driving on a speed circuit.
• Driving on a rolling road.
• When using a ‘space-saver’ type spare wheel.
• When using snow chains, non-slip covers or studded tyres.

Cruise Control

This system automatically maintains the vehicle’s speed at the value programmed by the driver (speed setting), without the use of the accelerator pedal. Cruise control is switched on manually. Switching on/pausing

Cruise control can also be paused temporarily:

• By pressing the brake pedal. Automatically, if the electronic stability control (ESC) system is triggered.

Modifying the cruise speed setting Cruise control must be active. To modify the cruise speed setting, based on the current speed of the vehicle:

• Briefly press button 2 or 3 to change the value in steps of + or – 1 mph (km/h).
• Press and hold button 2 or 3 to change the value in steps of + or – 5 mph (km/h). Pressing and holding button 2 or 3 results in a rapid change in the speed of the vehicle. As a precaution, we recommend setting a cruise speed fairly close to the current speed of your vehicle, to avoid any sudden acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle.

To modify the cruise speed setting using the speed suggested by the Road signs recognition shown on the instrument panel:

• Press button 5 once; a message is displayed to confirm the memorisation request. Press button 5 again to save the suggested speed. The speed is immediately shown on the instrument panel as the new speed setting.

Switching off

Turn the thumbwheel 1 to the “OFF” position: the cruise control information disappears from the screen.

Malfunction

In the event of a malfunction, dashes are displayed flashing and then fixed instead of the speed setting. Have it checked by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop. Drive Assist Plus Only available on versions with the EAT8 automatic gearbox and drive selector. This system automatically adjusts the speed and corrects the trajectory of the vehicle, using Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go in conjunction with Lane Positioning Assist.

These two functions must be activated and in operation. For more information on Adaptive cruise control and Lane Positioning Assist, refer to the corresponding sections.

The system assists the driver by acting on the steering, acceleration and braking within the physical limits and capacities of the vehicle. Certain road infrastructure elements or vehicles in the surroundings may not be properly seen or may be poorly interpreted by the camera and radar, resulting in an unexpected change in direction, a lack of steering correction and/or inappropriate management of acceleration or braking.

Primarily designed for driving on main roads and motorways, this system only works with moving vehicles driving in the same direction as your vehicle.

Adaptive cruise control For more information, refer to the General recommendations on the use of driving and manoeuvring aids and the Cruise control – particular recommendations. This system automatically maintains the vehicle speed at a value set by the driver (speed setting), while respecting a safety distance from the vehicle in front (target vehicle) previously set by the driver. The system automatically manages the acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. With a manual gearbox, the system slows the vehicle down as far as a speed of 19 mph (30 km/h). With the Stop & Go function, the system manages braking until the vehicle comes to a complete stop and restarts the vehicle. The brake lamps come on if the vehicle is slowed down by the system. It can be dangerous to drive if the brake lamps are not in perfect working order.

To do this, the system uses a camera fitted at the top of the windscreen and, depending on version, a radar fitted in the front bumper. Primarily designed for driving on main roads and motorways, this system only works with moving vehicles driving in the same direction as your vehicle. If the driver activates the direction indicator to overtake a slower vehicle, cruise control may temporarily reduce the distance to the target vehicle to facilitate.

Steering-mounted Controls

• Activation of cruise control at the current speed/decrease speed setting
• Activation of cruise control at the current speed/increase speed setting
• Pause/resume cruise control with the speed setting previously saved Confirmation of vehicle restart after automatic stop (versions with Stop & Go function)
• Use the speed suggested by the Road sign recognition (MEM display) Display and adjust the distance setting to the vehicle in front

Use Activating the system (pause)

With the engine running, turn the thumbwheel 1 downwards to the CRUISE position. Cruise control is ready to operate (grey display).

Switching on cruise control and setting the speed With a manual gearbox, your speed must be between 19 and 112 mph (30 and 180 km/h). With an EAT8 automatic gearbox or a drive selector, your speed must be between 0 and 112 mph (0 and 180 km/h).

• Press button 2 or 3: the current speed becomes the speed setting (minimum 19 mph (30 km/h)) and cruise control is immediately activated (green display). Press 3 to increase or 2 to decrease the speed setting (steps of 5 mph (km/h) if held pressed).

Pressing and holding button 2 or 3 results in a rapid change in the speed of the vehicle.

Pausing/resumption of cruise control

• Shift from mode D to N;
• Depress the clutch pedal for more than 10 seconds;
• Press the electric parking brake control.
• when the speed of the vehicle goes below 19 mph (30 km/h) with a manual gearbox.
• when the speed of the engine goes below 1100 rpm with a manual gearbox.
• By triggering of the ESC system.

With an EAT8 gearbox or a drive selector, following braking that has brought the vehicle to a complete stop, if the traffic conditions do not allow the vehicle to begin moving again within 3 seconds of stopping, press button 4 or the accelerator pedal to move off. If the driver takes no action after the vehicle has been stopped, the electric parking brake is applied automatically after about 5 minutes.

Cruise control remains active after changing gear, regardless of the gearbox type.

When the driver attempts to reactivate cruise control, after the function has been paused, the message “Activation not possible, unsuitable conditions” is briefly displayed if reactivation is not possible (safety conditions not met).

Changing the programmed speed setting with the Road signs recognition function Press 5 to accept the speed suggested by the function on the instrument panel, then press again to confirm. To prevent sudden acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle, select a speed setting relatively close to the vehicle’s current speed.

Changing the inter-vehicle distance

• Press 6 to display the distance setting thresholds (“Distant”, “Normal” or “Close”), then press again to select a threshold. After a few seconds, the option is accepted and will be memorised when the ignition is switched off.

Temporarily exceeding the speed setting Press the accelerator pedal fully. Distance monitoring and cruise control are deactivated while acceleration is maintained. “Cruise control suspended” is displayed.

Deactivating the system Turn the thumbwheel 1 upwards to the OFF position.

• Vehicle detected by the system (full symbol)
• Cruise control active (colour not grey)
• Speed suggested by the Road signs recognition function

Take back control of the vehicle immediately: the system cannot manage the current driving situation.

“Activation refused, conditions unsuitable”. The system refuses to activate cruise control, as the necessary conditions are not fulfilled. Stop & Go function

While the vehicle is immobilised, the following recommendations apply:

• The driver should not leave the vehicle. Do not open the boot. Do not drop off or pick up passengers. Do not engage reverse gear.

When moving off again, watch out for cyclists, pedestrians and animals, as they may not be detected properly.

Operating limits Cruise control operates by day and night, in dry weather or moderate rainfall. Certain situations cannot be managed by the system and require driver intervention. Cases not taken into account by the system:

• Pedestrians, cyclists, animals. Stationary vehicles (e.g. traffic jams, breakdown).

• Vehicles crossing your lane. Vehicles driving in the opposite direction.

Situations where the driver must suspend the system:

• Vehicles in a tight bend.
• When approaching a roundabout.

• When following a narrow vehicle. Reactivate the system when conditions allow. Situations in which the driver is prompted to immediately resume control: Excessively sharp deceleration by the vehicle in front of you.

When a vehicle cuts in sharply between your vehicle and the one in front.

Some vehicles on the road may be poorly perceived or interpreted by the camera and/or the radar (e.g. truck), which can lead to an incorrect evaluation of distances and result in inappropriate acceleration or braking of the vehicle.

Pay particular attention:

• When motorcycles are present and when there are vehicles staggered across the traffic lane.
• When entering a tunnel or crossing a bridge.

If any of the following malfunctions occurs, do not use the system:

• Following an impact on the windscreen close to the camera or on the front bumper (versions with radar). The brake lamps not working. If the vehicle has undergone any of the following modifications, do not use the system:
• Carrying long objects on roof bars. Towing. The front end of the vehicle was modified (for example by adding long-range headlamps or painting the front bumper). Obstructed radar.

The Peugeot 3008 Cruise Control is a sophisticated feature that enables you to maintain a constant speed while driving, thereby enhancing your comfort on long trips. 

The system lets you set a desired speed, and the car will automatically adjust throttle and brakes to maintain that speed.

Yes, it is adaptive, which means it can modify your speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

The maximum speed can differ by region, but is typically adjustable up to 130 km/h or 80 miles per hour

Yes, it is straightforward to turn on and off using the steering wheel controls.

While it can maintain a set speed, it’s not designed for stop-and-go traffic. You may want to contemplate adaptive cruise control in such circumstances.

It is typically an available option on most trim levels, but market availability may differ. 

Yes, it can operate on hilly terrain, but the gearbox may downshift or upshift to maintain the desired speed.

It’s recommended to avoid using Cruise Control in heavy rain, snow, or icy conditions, as these may affect the car’s handling.

You can deactivate Cruise Control or manually apply the brakes to decelerate down when necessary.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes.
