After that, you’ll visit the Pantheon—completed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian—to see the astonishing 2,000-year old dome that remains the world's largest unsupported dome to this day.

After a brief pause to use the restroom or sip a coffee (price not included in tour), the next stop on your Best of Rome Walking Tour is where Emperor Julius Caesar met his untimely demise on the Ides of March. You'll visit restricted areas, including Palatine Hill's newest monument, the Domus Tiberiana—the first imperial palace recently restored and reopened in Fall 2023. Renovated by several emperors including Domitian and Hadrian, the palace stretched more than nine acres! The tour continues to the enchanting Palatine Hill, where according to Roman mythology, the story of Rome began with the birth of Romulus and Remus.

Your tour concludes outside of Ancient Rome's most emblematic monuments, the Colosseum, where many a Roman emperor attended its games. Your guide will also point out the nearby Arch of Constantine, built in 315 to celebrate the victory of Emperor Constantine over Maxentius.

This was awesome

Oct 19, 2023

Our tour guide was Anna, she was while versed and very passionate about the sites. Anna was very educated and very understandably with her answers, we had a police road block that we could not enter to go to the pizza place for the tour she quickly decided to change it to a different pizza place on our tour, she was very knowledgeable of the area and didn't skip a beat on the tour. She was so gracious thru out the tour. I feel we got more information about all the sites then most tour guides would of known. She even made sure all of us site seekers made it back to our destinations with directions because she was over all very knowledgeable of the area. Anna diffently has a passion and love for what she does. We are very impressed with the quality of our head sets. I would diffently suggest if you have never been to Rome book the Walks Tours and hopefully your lucky enough to get Anna like we where. Wear comfy shoes and bring an empty water bottle for the watering laces thru out your tour because the water is safe to drink. And please don't forget to tip your tour guide. Debbie and Lee from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania USA P.S. we have 2 more tours with Walks Tours, can't wait!!

Come with us to discover the Ancient Rome tour , looking at these sites you will be enchanted, imagining the greatness of the builders who with their architecture and lines defied the centuries, allowing ancient Rome to remain intact in front of your eyes.

Ancient Rome tour: 10 unmissable places

Our Ancient Rome Tour will start from the Palatine Hill , one of the seven hills of Rome, legend says that the origins of the capital began right here. The hill controls the Tiber River and overlooks the Roman Forum on one side and the Circus Maximus on the other. On the top we also find the Palatine Museums , rich in finds. At the base of the Forum, the famous Colosseum , not far from the great Thermal Baths of Caracalla and the Mouth of Truth where you can try to insert your hand to verify your sincerity.

Passing along Via dei Fori Imperiali, commissioned by Mussolini and which cuts the Fori in two, which were once enclosed in a single space, you will arrive at Trajan's Markets . With us you will arrive at the Ara Pacis , altar of the Peace of Augustus to end up in the green and relaxing Via Appia Antica and its infinite catacombs. The Ancient Rome tour is concentrated in the central area of Rome, with the only exception of the Appia Antica which we could not fail to include in this itinerary. All these places can easily be visited with the Visit Rome Pass , a card that offers the possibility of access to these attractions and others.

10. Roman forum

Ancient Rome tour, Roman Forum

The Roman Forum represented the oldest part of the Forum, which in ancient times was the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization . Inside the archaeological area you will be able to observe the various historical eras, the definitive arrangement of the Forums is due to the Imperial Period , it is under the Emperor Augustus that the forums took the name of Imperial Forums. Take a few hours to visit them, you have to walk inside them.

The entrance to the Forum is in Piazza Santa Maria di Loreto , near Trajan's column , while the exit is on Via dei Fori Imperiali. With the same ticket you can visit the Roman Forum , the Imperial Forum  and the Palatine Hill . At the exit it’s interesting to observe the marble maps that show the progressive enlargement of the Roman Empire, your Ancient Rome tour has begun.

An essential stop on your Ancient Rome tour are the Capitoline Museums , these are part of the Civic Museums of Rome system and extend over an exhibition area of almost 13,000 square metres . From its terraces you will be able to observe the entire extension of the Forum at your feet.

Inside the Capitoline museums there are many finds including the very famous Capitoline Wolf with Romulus and Remus at her feet, a bronze statue. The sculpture with Marcus Aurelius on horseback is also of great interest.

8. Colosseum

Ancient Rome tour, colosseum

At the base of the forums stands the Flavian amphitheatre , the so-called Colosseum , so called because the colossal statue of Nero was erected next to it. The Colosseum is the largest Roman amphitheater in the world, included in the UNESCO heritage list and a symbol of ancient Rome.

Inside it is possible to visit the cavea , with the steps for the spectators' seats, originally made of marble, at the end of the seats there were two boxes reserved for high figures, primarily the emperors. In the central part there is the arena where shows took place with wild beasts , gladiators , but also tragedies, comedies and the naumachie, the naval battles that so impressed the spectators. In your Ancient Rome tour include the underground passages , tunnels underneath the arena, from which the animals and machinery for the shows had access.

7. Caracalla's thermal baths

Ancient Rome tour, Caracalla's thermal baths

Caracalla's thermal baths

The thermal Baths of Caracalla constitute one of the grandest examples of imperial baths of ancient Rome, to be included in the tour. They were public baths that served the residents. Inside the Baths there were gyms and saunas , up to the main path in the bath tub calidarium, tepidarium and frigidarium . The slow and gradual transition from heat to cold was intended to benefit health by toning the body and helping circulation.

Built by order of Emperor Caracalla , this enormous complex was not only a space dedicated to body care, but also an interesting meeting place to discuss business and politics. They were frequented by free men and women and by slaves, everyone had to respect dedicated days and times. The entire structure belonged to the state.

6. Circus Maximus

Ancient Rome tour, Circus Maximus

Circus Maximus

Located between the Palatine Hill and the Aventine Hill , the Circus Maximus is one of the first circuses where games and competitions took place since the time of Romulus, a huge stadium in which the Romans were entertained. 600 meters long and 140 meters wide, it is a large flat space near the Tiber landing place. Initially the seats for the spectators were made of wood, later replaced with brick seats, there were also service areas and shops.

The most popular competitions in the Circus Maximus were those of horses , but in addition to the games and races the Circus Maximus was also an important meeting point , a function which it has retained up to contemporary times; in fact, concerts and competitions take place here which attract many visitors. An unmissable destination on your Ancient Rome tour.

5. Mouth of truth

Ancient Rome tour, Mouth of truth

Mouth of truth

A stone's throw from the Circus Maximus going in the direction of the Tiber we find the ancient marble mask called the Mouth of truth inside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin . In the period of ancient Rome it was used as a manhole, placed in a horizontal position, probably to decorate the lowest point of a square. The face must have depicted a river or marine deity who had the function of swallowing rainwater.

The legendary fame that has spanned the centuries where the Mouth of truth is the proof of lies and truth dates back to the medieval period , where it was said that if an unfaithful husband or wife inserted their hand inside their mouth it would be cut off. The name Mouth of truth was coined in 1485 and has not changed since then. Audrey Hepburn in the movie  Roman Holiday included this destination in her tour of Ancient Rome, do it too.

4. Trajan's Markets

Ancient Rome tour, Trajan's Markets

Trajan's Markets

Trajan's markets are a very suggestive and less visited destination than the remaining part of the Roman Forum, the markets were intended for commercial and administrative activities linked to the Forum and were directly connected to them. The complex which stands on the slopes of the Quirinale hill has also housed the Museum of the Imperial Forums since 2007 . The Markets were designed and created under the supervision of the architect Apollodorus of Damascus .

The origin of the architect contributed to creating the different styles that we find in this structure, which represents an exception in the Roman architectural panorama. The lower part of the structure was intended to host commercial activities, so much so that it was seen as an ideal continuation of Trajan's Forum. While the upper floors were dedicated to management and administrative operations. Inside this museum, multimedia tools are used, useful for observing the original reconstructions.

3. Ara Pacis

Ancient Rome tour, Ara pacis

Ara pacis, fregio

Our  Ancient Rome   tour continues with a very important monument, the Ara Pacis , commissioned by Emperor Augustus to celebrate the peace and prosperity achieved with the Pax Romana or Pax Augusti , a long period of peace imposed by Augustus on the states of 'Roman Empire. The Ara Pacis consists of an almost square enclosure elevated on a small podium, the entire structure is in marble, finely characterized by relief decorations both externally and internally.

The structure that encloses the Ara Pacis was the work of contemporary architect Richard Meier and represents the first major architectural intervention built in the center of Rome. On the floor below the Ara Pacis a museum hosts temporary exhibition . This monument is particularly important and reminds us how peace should be the founding element of any historical period.

2. Via Appia Antica

Ancient Rome tour, Appia Antica

Appia Antica

The ancient Appia was called Regina Viarum (Queen of the roads) and connected the city of Rome to one of the most important ports of antiquity, that of Brindisi, from where the main trade routes to Greece and the East departed. For your Ancient Rome tour it can represent an unmissable moment of relax . The scenery is truly pleasant, a stretch of the road still preserved with slabs and cobblestones, as it was originally, is closed to traffic and immersed in the Roman countryside .

You can travel this road on foot , by bicycle or on horseback and make stops to admire the views, imagining yourself as a romantic painter on the grand tour of Italy. On the sides of the road there are monuments and marble tombstones, note the mausoleum of Cecilia Metella . The Appia Antica is considered one of the greatest engineering works of the Roman era.

1. Ancient Rome tour: last stop at Catacombs of San Callisto

Ancient Rome tour, Catacombs

Built towards the end of the 2nd century, the catacombs of San Callisto cover an area of 15 hectares and reach a depth of more than 20 meters between the Via Appia Antica and the Via Ardeatina . It is a cemetery complex in whose galleries more than fifty martyrs, nine popes and eight church dignitaries are buried, which is why the complex is called the small Vatican . The catacombs of San Callisto are among the largest and most important in Rome.

Since 1930 the Holy See, owner of the Catacombs, has entrusted the custody of the Catacombs of San Callisto to the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco . Including this destination in your Ancient Rome tour is a must (unless you suffer from claustrophobia!). Our ancient Rome tour in 10 unmissable places ends here, we wish you a good visit.

History of Tour Guiding

History of Tour Guiding

Tour guiding is considered as one of the oldest occupations/professions of the west. The evolution of tour guides and the guiding history was classified by Pond (1993) into four periods:

First phase (3000 B.C. to A.D.500)

There are a number of references in history from the Roman Empire to the Middle Age, throughout the renaissance and into the Modern Age. Tourism saw the first major development during the period of the great empires. During this period, travelling was risky, uncertain and time taking.

Also read Tour Guiding in a museum

The ancient Persians, Assyrians and Egyptians used to travel through surface (land) and the waterways. This activity spread and so did the number of guides, they were known as ‘explainers’ or ‘leaders around’ (as they lead the group), who mainly assisted visitors travelling abroad.

Second phase (A. D.500 to A. D.1500)

The second phase is in the period between the fall of Rome and the start of Renaissance known as the Middle Age and for approximately 1000 years from A. D. 500 to 1500. Religious pilgrimage was the most prevalent type of journey by the middle and the upper classes.

The fall of Rome resulted in the decline of the economy and chaos in the social order. The safety and security of the travellers came as a serious concern; therefore the guides had to serve as a pathfinder , safety escort and protector .

Third phase (A.D.1500 to around 1700)

The third phase covered the period of the Renaissance and the Grand Tour, approximately A.D.1500 to around 1700. During the period of renaissance, excursions were taken by the youth of prosperous families who were also called ‘Grand Tourists’ for cultural and educational reasons.

These people (tourists) were expected to enrich their knowledge through long journeys while being accompanied by a guide who gave them information about tourist’s places to sightsee, guides in this period came to be known as ‘cicerone’ .

The word cicerone derives from Cicero, the most esteemed tour guide in the European society. The guide was expected to be well versed in many practical subjects, areas, be articulate and be multi-lingual.

Fourth Stage (post 1700)

Mr. Jan Carlzon (the former president of Scandinavian Airlines) termed the exact instant when the customer (here tourists) has a direct contact with any of the front-line employees/ staff as the ‘moment of truth’ . This idea has had a marked influence on the service industry (tourism and travel is a part of the service industry) and is now globally accepted (Pond, 1993).

ancient empire in tour guide

The essentials in a few days

Visiting Rome, a city bursting with history and magnificent monuments, is an unforgettable experience for anyone. To help you discover all the main places of interest and better plan your route through the Eternal City, here is the guide of things to do and see in Rome. Whether you’re a solo traveller, couple or a family, Rome is the ideal capital to spend a weekend of 2 or 3 days, above all because the city can be visited very easily on foot. So come and join us for a classic ancient Rome tour !

Guided tour through ancient Rome

For more than 500 years, Rome was at the heart of the ancient world. The centre of the world ( caput mundi , as the ancients called it) has left a considerable amount of stunning attractions and fascinating architecture, from the Colosseum to the Circus Maximus . Exploring the center of Rome is a unique experience, especially if you do it on foot.

Walking through Rome allows you to discover its history. A guided tour includes the most interesting places in classical Rome. This type of tour is perfect to experience the most significant places in Rome with a professional guide and without having to waste any of your valuable time in the queue. Thanks to priority access, it will introduce you to the treasures of ancient Rome including:

  • The Colosseum : the jewel of Rome. It was the largest amphitheater ever built under the Roman empire, a must-see in the capital. Up to 75,000 spectators bore witness to gladiator fights and other shows. At night it is even more beautiful!

  • The Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill : the Roman Forum is located right next to the Colosseum and was the heart of the ancient city with religious, political and public institutions. Many remains are very well- preserved, including some temples and the Roman curia (Senate House). During the visit, do not miss the Palatine Hill – , the hill on which Rome’s legendary King Romulus founded the city – which houses the remains of the palaces of the Roman emperors.
  • The Capitoline Museums : here you can discover the stories behind a wealth of Greek and Roman objects and masterpieces.

Capitoline Museums

  • The Arch of Constantine : the Arch of Constantine is the last triumphal arch built in the Eternal City and it is located a few meters from the Colosseum. It was built in 315 AD in honor of the Emperor Constantine 1st and his victory against fellow emperor Maxentius in 312 at the battle of the Milvian Bridge. Recycled from the material of other monuments, its marbles and bas-reliefs powerfully symbolise the victories of the emperors and the strength of the empire.
  • The Pantheon : Rome’s best-preserved temple is an ancient religious building situated right in the center of the city. The original Pantheon was built in 27 BC, but that’s not the building you see before you today (you’ll find out why on one of our classic tours!). In the 7th century, it was converted into a Christian church. To date it is the only building dating back to ancient Rome that is still perfectly intact.

ancient empire in tour guide

  • Trajan’s Column : Trajan’s column is a Doric column 40 meters high and is the only trace of the Trajan’s Forum surviving intact., It is located at the beginning of Via dei Fori Imperiali and. is truly unique because it is decorated with a 200 metre-long illustrative frieze that forms a spiral around the column.
  • Baths of Caracalla : Caracalla’s Thermal Baths are an important place in ancient Rome. They are the remains of one of the largest thermal installations of antiquity. They were a real center of relaxation and recreation: home to a library, gardens, sports areas and places where to eat. The thermal baths were, obviously, a true architectural jewel of the time but they also had very sophisticated heating, water and sewage systems.
  • The catacombs : there are several networks of catacombs in Rome, the best known are the catacombs of San Callisto, San Sebastiano, Priscilla and Domitilla. The catacombs are a network of underground galleries used to bury the dead. From the 2nd to the 5th-century pagan citizens, Roman Jews and early Christians were buried there. These underground cemeteries are rich in paintings and frescoes which magnificently represent the transition from a secular Roman society to a Christian society during the first centuries AD.
  • Via Appia Antica : the Appia Antica is certainly the best known and most beautiful of the ancient routes issuing from the Italian capital. Several tens of kilometers long and dating back to the 4th century BC, it is lined by a range of tombs, villas and ruins – all to be admired from the beauty of its ancient cobbles.

ancient empire in tour guide

  • Other ancient sites in Rome : there are many other ancient sites and monuments that deserve a visit: the Circus Maximus, the ruins of Largo Argentina (where Julius Caesar was assassinated), the Pyramid of Cestius, the Domus Aurea, the Lateran Obelisk, and much, much more!

Embark on a journey to ancient Rome on our virtual Forum tour

If you want to understand what Rome was like in antiquity, then you need to get to grips with the Roman Forum . The political heart of ancient Rome , history is alive in this complex labyrinth of temples , buildings and cobbled streets . Join our resident expert  Caterina  on a journey of discovery back to the heyday of the bustling ancient metropolis, which incredibly reached a population of one million inhabitants in the first century AD.

On our virtual exploration of the Roman Forum, Caterina will help you piece together this fascinating puzzle of ruins . We'll start our journey with the earliest Roman settlements here in the bronze age, before tracing the Forum's story as it rose in importance to become the most significant meeting place in the ancient world. Learn about the Romans from all walks of life who lived and worked here; meet the politicians and orators who made their mark in the ancient senate , and learn about the dictators and emperors who forged the ancient world’s greatest empire.

Relive the intrigues of antiquity and learn how the city’s denizens bid an emotional farewell to the assassinated Julius Caesar as he burned on his funeral pyre in 44BC, plunging the empire into civil war. Learn too of Cicero , decapitated here in the bloody aftermath, executed as an enemy of the state with his hands, tongue and head nailed to the Rostrum as a warning.

You’ll also get the lowdown on the complex world of Rome’s pagan religions as we reconstruct magnificent temples like the Temple of Saturn . Learn about the privileged yet often tragic lives of the Vestal Virgins whose task it was to keep the city’s eternal flame forever lit, and discover the dark fate that awaited priestesses who broke their solemn vows of chastity .

As we continue our virtual stroll through the Forum, we’ll relive the triumphal parades that took place on the Via Sacra and decipher the carvings on the magnificent Arch of Titus , which vividly depict the brutal triumphs of the Roman Empire in Jerusalem - including the plundering of its priceless Temple, whose spoils paid for the Colosseum.

Thanks to videos and high-resolution photographs, virtual reconstructions and, above all, the expertise of our expert guide, we believe that our virtual tour of the Roman Forum is the next best thing to being there in person. So join Caterina today, and scratch that travel itch from the comfort of your own home!

Tour Reviews

4.9 (10 reviews)

Being born in Tivoli, not far from Rome, I believed that I would not discover many new things about this city during the virtual tour. But I soon had to change my mind: Caterina was absolutely brilliant, I was impressed! She told many curious, exciting aspects about Rome in a very pleasant way, putting everyone at ease. It was a beautiful moment of escape from everyday life. I can't wait to go back to Rome and visit it with her.

Beatrice - Feb 03, 2021

Caterina was an excellent tour guide to the Roman Forum and its famous ruins. She had excellent visual aids that helped us see what the Forum looked liked and how it functioned at its peak. Her explanations were clear, concise, and fascinating, with just the right amount of background. We highly recommend her tour!

COLOSSEUM AND IMPERIAL ROME PRIVATE TOUR – ROME GUIDES

Colosseum and Imperial Rome Tour, Colosseum and Imperial Rome Tour, Rome Guides

COLOSSEUM AND IMPERIAL ROME TOUR

The Imperial Rome Private Tour allows you dedicate a half day to the visit of the beating heart of Ancient Rome: Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Forget the traffic, go in front of the official entrance for the visitors and immerse yourself in history!

ROMAN FORUM

We will start the Guided Tour from the Roman Forum , the center of the social, religious and political life of Ancient Rome, enclosed between two hills: the Palatine and the Capitol. The Palatine is connected to the legendary tradition of the foundation of Rome, while on the Capitol stood the majestic Temple of Capitoline Jupiter.

We will visit the entire area, in order to examine the architecture of its buildings and admiring its monumental attractions (the Basilica Iulia, the Arch of Titus, the Temple of Antonino and Faustina): you will follow the steps of large groups of people enjoying the experience, travelling with their imagination in the middle of art history and archaeology. With the help of our Tour Guide, you will try to read the interesting tracks of the activities of the Ancient Romans, collecting every information about their lives.

At that point, we will continue entering into the Colosseum , the most famous and iconic Italian monument, built by Vespasian in just 8 years in the I century AD above the ancient Lake of Nero and used for the “ venationes ” with the animals and the gladiator fights. It is not only the main symbol of the Roman Empire, but it was (together with the Circus Maximus) the place where huge crowds went to enjoy the games, waiting for their heroes. We will visit the largest and most famous Roman Amphitheatre, one of the seven wonders of the modern world and the actual pride of the city of Rome and of all of Italy: learn about its construction, talk about the water that according to the legend could fill it and admire its impressive original structure.

THE ARCH OF CONSTANTINE

Finally, we will conclude the Tour of Imperial Rome by examining the monumental Arch of Constantine : it was designed and erected by the first Christian Emperor to commemorate the victory in the famous Battle of the Milvian Bridge.

An in-depth examination of the themes examined in this Tour could take place inside the Capitoline Museums , included in our Museums and Galleries Tour .

DETAILS OF THE IMPERIAL ROME TOUR

The duration of the Tour with our English speaking Tour Guide will be about three hours , and will include an internal visit to the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, with external insights dedicated to the Imperial Forums and the Arch of Constantine. If you want to include some special location of the Palatine Hill (the Houses of Augustus or Livia) or of the Roman Forum (the Church of St. Mary Antiqua), or if you would like to visit the arena floor of the Colosseum Underground, please contact us sending an email.

The Tour does not include the payment of the the skip the line Colosseum tickets. Reservations to book the available tickets of the Colosseum must be made well in advance. Some portions of the Colosseum or the Roman Forum may be closed, as verifiable from the site of the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum (for example, for the arena works on 2021).

The Ancient Craft of Tour-Guiding

ancient empire in tour guide

By Andrew Marantz

Let’s say you’re a tourist with a full wallet who wants to see Manhattan. You will have your pick of conveyances: a hansom cab for charm, a stretch Hummer for opulence, a helicopter for scope. But for informativeness, nothing beats the double-decker tour bus. You can sit in the open air, gawking at the fifty-story buildings from your second-story vantage, while a guide—like a Baedeker audiobook, but human—spews ready-made historical factoids. You process the names and dates, feel edified, and forget them all on the flight home.

Imagine, then, riding a double-decker bus past Sheridan Square and hearing, over the P.A. system, a pinched, manic voice that sounds like Lenny Bruce speaking through a kazoo. “Fear: a basic theme of all of our lives. Afraid on the streets of Greenwich Village under threat of assassination, and the assassins are our dreams.” You are not dreaming. The voice belongs to Timothy (Speed) Levitch, the world’s premier avant-garde tour guide. Speaking of the past in the present tense, he notes that the bus is “five blocks from where D. H. Lawrence lives lasciviously” and “two blocks from where the playwright Arthur Miller contemplates suicide.” At this point, depending on your cast of mind, you will either disembark in fear or gleefully reach for your video camera.

“Tour-guiding is an ancient craft,” Levitch told me recently. “Moses is the first tour guide to forego a direct route. Odysseus is a sort of tour guide, of course. And Spartacus had the greatest destination for his tour group: freedom.” Levitch is a short and effusive man whose sartorial presentation is half aesthete, half vaudevillian. He wore a Union Army-style coat, two paisley scarves, New Balance sneakers, and an Abbie Hoffman hairdo, which he tweaked nervously with his hands. “Willy Wonka’s a great tour guide; he really opens up what you can do with the form,” he said. He also cited Woody Allen and Bugs Bunny as influences.

In 1998, Bennett Miller, who would go on to direct “Capote” and “Moneyball,” heard that there was a Gray Line tour guide blowing passengers’ minds with allusions to Nietzsche and Neruda. Levitch became the subject of Miller’s first feature, a black-and-white documentary called “The Cruise.” Another director, Richard Linklater, met Levitch at a screening of “The Cruise,” and the two men became friends. In Linklater’s 2002 cult classic “Waking Life,” Levitch delivered a wild-eyed monologue about life, Lorca, and lucid dreaming.

“Speed is amazing,” Linklater said. “You can blindfold him and drop him in a new place, and he’ll know every secret story.” Levitch now lives in Kansas City, where he leads a barbecue tour. He also works Bear Grylls-style, parachuting in to a city he’s never visited and building a tour from scratch. Levitch was recently asked to lead a tour of Silver Spring, Maryland. “That was great training—how to give a tour of nothing much,” Levitch says. He did some research and learned, among other things, that Silver Spring may have been the first town in America with storefront parking, which led to a meditation on the history of suburban sprawl. “People ask him how he does it,” Linklater said. “It’s like anything else in art or performance: it’s called fucking talent.”

Starting on Thursday, Hulu will air “ Up to Speed ,” a historico-comic series created by Linklater to showcase Levitch’s talents. The show’s initial run will consist of six episodes, each filmed in a different American city. On the third and final day of the New York shoot, I joined the cast and crew in Battery Park. (Watch an exclusive clip from the episode above.) It was not long after sunrise, and the tour group (thirteen extras, paid hourly) clutched paper cups of coffee and looked pallid. Alex Lipschultz, the show’s executive producer, told them, “The premise of the show is that Speed, the guy in the long jacket, is a tour guide. Today he’s taking you around the Statue of Liberty. Try not to look cold or unhappy.”

We boarded a seventy-two-foot catamaran and motored southwest in search of a good camera angle. The tour group milled around on the upper deck, mingling and snapping photos. “We don’t have a speaking role,” said Sandra Kamerman, an attractive woman with gray hair and sparkling blue eyes. “There’s some acting in being attentive to what Speed is saying. Not that it’s hard, though, because he’s so interesting.” Kamerman had worked as a lawyer and an art gallerist before pursuing acting, her true passion, at the age of fifty-nine.

“It’s easy work; it’s just listening to this innately quirky guy,” said Jonathan Schmidt, who is twenty-seven. Schmidt plays drums for a band called Morningwood; he began acting only recently, when a friend asked him to portray a rock drummer in a Bacardi commercial. “It was the most amazing experience,” Schmidt said, “so I figured, why not try acting for a while?” For the sake of continuity, the tour group had been wearing the same clothes for three days. Schmidt, who had been out partying until shortly before he arrived at Battery Park, looked as if he’d been in his clothes for a week.

Of all the people on the boat, Levitch had the least trouble looking happy. “This is so freaking cool,” he said, looking out over the bow. “We have our own private ferry! There’s so many times where you take the Staten Island Ferry and you want it to just park in the middle for a while.” Eiko Kawashima, who trained as a stage actress in her native Tokyo, was similarly enthralled by the view. She held her camera at arm’s length and took a shot of herself with the Statue of Liberty in the background. “I guess I am a real tourist,” she said.

When the angle looked right, Linklater called action (or, more precisely, “Rock it!”) and Levitch started talking, emphasizing some phrases with a burlesque shoulder roll. “New York is a complicated comedian, spinning jokes with our circumstances,” he said. “Frederic Bartholdi is said to have based the head of the statue on his mother and the body on his mistress.” Under her breath, Kamerman said, “As a mother, that makes me a bit uncomfortable.” Schmidt nodded off between takes.

After a few hours, the boat turned back toward the harbor. The crew passed around a clear plastic tray of bacon; Linklater, a vegan, declined. “I always saw tour-guiding as a sort of U.N. on wheels,” Levitch said. “Or rudders, I guess, in this case. You’re serenading people from all over the world. I used to have dreams of walking into a ballroom and there’d be all the fabulous tourists I’d met over the years. You form a relationship with all these people, thirty minutes at a time, and then they’re gone.” On shore, a producer asked Linklater if he still needed the extras. “No, the rest of the shots are just Speed,” Linklater said. “The tourists are free to go.” Levitch waved goodbye, and his most recent tour group dispersed into lower Manhattan.

Viterbo and Bomarzo Tour

A trip to the Countryside! On a short trip from Rome, you'll arrive in the quaint countryside of a town called Viterbo, an Etruscan origin as many towns in the area. Even though it is said that this village was founded in the early centuries Anno Domini, it's historical relevance started with the fortification by the Northern King, Desiderius, in the vain attempt to conquer Rome. It has later become one of the Papal States, and desired by Emperors, for centuries, due to its favorable strategic position. When finally, in 1905, it became a Free Commune. It hosts incredible buildings and structures, aside from the breathtaking views. Like the Papal Palace an outstanding building adjacent to the Duomo of Viterbo, it has actually hosted Papacy for approximately 20 years. Since Rome, at the time of Pope Alexander the 4th, was becoming too violent. Viterbo was the perfect environment for the Holy See to continue its work. So of course, this Papal Palace is an incredible building, absolutely worth a visit. The Duomo of Viterbo right next door, is the town Cathedral dedicated to Saint Laurence. Built in the 12th Century where a smaller church used to be. A few interesting notes about this Cathedral are the beautiful original facade from 1570 and the fact that it is built on top of an 8th century church, which was originally built on top of a temple in devotion to Hercules. Aside from these main sites in Viterbo, there are several other attractions to visit Like the Medieval  neighborhood, hosting incredible architectures. And the National Etruscan Museum. Viterbo is not the only charming place you'll see. In fact there are a few other stops your tour driver will make, that will make your head spin! Bagnaia and Bomarzo Visit Villa Lante in Bagnaia One of the greatest structural accomplishments of the Italian 1500s. In Villa Lante, you will see the fountains of the moors, the two mansions (Gambara and Montalto), and a spectacular system of the fountains and water games and a beautiful park. The entire Villa (between the garden and park) occupies a surface of 22 hectares. The particularity of Lante Villa is shown by the magnificence of the garden, especially in the architectural work. You will have lunch in a typical “trattoria” before visiting Bomarzo. Bomarzo is a fantastic garden. It slips into the theatrical, symbol-laden traditions of the Baroque period. Unsurprisingly, after several centuries of neglect, it was rediscovered during the 1950s by surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, who found inspiration in the garden’s mixture of natural and bizarre design. After a beautiful day in the Countryside, visiting the most magical, hidden locations, you’ll return to your requested location in Rome.

Bomarzo, Caprarola and Calcata Tour

A tour to visit the Monsters Park of Bomarzo, Caprarola another incredible village and finally Calcata. You’ll discover some of the most amazing features and hidden gems. Certainly a day to remember. First stop will be Bomarzo (about a 1 hour drive) were you can visit the “Monster Park”. This garden is an extraordinary sight, because with its strange, disturbing sculptures (taken from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso) it was created by Vicino Orsini, Duke of Bomarzo, to rival Caprarola and the Villa Lante. You’ll continue to Caprarola where you can visit the famous Palazzo Farnese. Initially intended to be a fortress by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, its construction started in 1525, and was later transformed by Vignola into a magnificent palace. Antonio Tempesti, Giovanni Il Vecchio, Giovanni Antonio Da Varese, Raffaellino da Reggio, Giacomo Del Duca and Jacopo Bertoia worked to realize this magnificent summer residence. Two bridges connect the palace to the immense Italian Garden and to the park on the back side of the palace. The Summer and Winter gardens encircle the Palace. Fountains, grottos, nymphaea, and numerous statues enrich the way between hedges and large staircases. *Eventually, if the Farnese Palace in Caprarola is closed on the day of your visit, we will substitute it with a visit of the magnificent Orsini-Odescalchi Castle of Bracciano, perched overlooking the shores of the beautiful Bracciano Lake Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. On the way back to Rome, stop at Calcata. This very old village, once an outstanding center of the Faliscans, is now one of the best kept, picturesque towns in the region.

Rome in a Day Tour

Welcome in Rome! There is really no better way to start a Roman vacation than with this private tour. One of our personal tour driver will welcome you at your hotel or any other place of your convenience in Rome, to whisk you away, on a 7 hour trip through history, art, archeology and the basic Rome way of living that is just a delight and so interesting to experience. This Tour of Rome will start off with a stop in the famous Piazza Venezia a famous circular square constantly beaten by hundreds of cars and vespas and motorini (what we call mopeds and bikes). While horns are blaring in the traffic, passerby's always in a hurry and the famous Italian charm for hand gestures and raised voices the main constant, all you will notice is the monumental structure overlooking the Piazza. A monument dedicated to Italy's last king Victor Emanuel the Second, and resting place of the Unknown soldier. A fallen soldier from WW1 that is laid to rest there to honor and tribute every Italian soldier who's fought and fallen in every war old or recent. You can notice An imposing horseman in a giant bronze statue, overlooking the entire city center, to magnify the importance of the Italian Kingdom in its glory days. And just above is a building, temple-like in structure, with white marble steps and columns, placed on top of one of Rome's legendary hills. Italian flags hanging on it's ends. This monument is really hard to miss. Fun fact: The monument of Victor Emmanuel, officially called Altare della Patria (the Altar of the Nation) is also known simply as the wedding cake. For it's distinctive shape, built in white, marble layers, one floor after the other. Resembling a big white wedding sheet cake. This altar shares its space with Capitoline Hill, Capitol Hill or simply known as Campidoglio. It is one of Rome's 7 hills placed in between Campus Martius and the Roman Forum, and it is head of the Roman Government, With an incredible square commissioned by Pope Paul the third and created by Michelangelo himself in the 16th century. But Capitol Hill does not only hosts Rome's City hall, the Mayor's office and the Capitolini Museums (which offers a vast amount of marble artifacts, artwork and other curiosities from Roman times) but it offers AMAZING VIEWS of the city below, on one end of the hill is Piazza Venezia, Campus Martius and modernization, on the other the Ancient citadel of the Roman Forum. A perfect balance between present and the past. Speaking of Roman Forum, you absolutely go across Via dei Fori Imperiali, an ancient way in Rome that crosses this part of town, with the Forum's archeological site on both sides. Envision Temples, Market places, Marble buildings and life conducted in these squares centuries ago. This is where Roman Senate would reunite, where citizens would gather to worship archaic divinities and conduct their business. To keep the Ancient Roman theme alive, walking straight through the ancient Roman Forum you will arrive at the Colosseum The one and only Colosseum, the Flavian Amphitheater An ancient, imposing structure built to delight and entertain the people of Rome, in the prime of its years. With gory, cruel hunts and gladiator fights but also fun scenes of Naval battles, where they would fill the Arena with water and float around in ships. A colossal building in the heart of Rome, to gather the people, to bring people together. We absolutely recommend a stop here. But Rome is full of wonderful things to see, in a fun, intuitive and entertaining way. With squares, steps and fountains and churches. Take Piazza Navona for example The most extravagant of Rome’s Square, adorned with the fountain of The Four Rivers by Bernini, and the church of his rival, Borromini. Visit Piazza Della Rotonda, where you can see the Pantheon, the best preserved and enchanting monument of ancient times. The Spanish Steps A wonderful square, world famous for the beautiful stair case that comes down from Trinità dei Monti with beautiful views of  Via dei Condotti, intersecting with via del Corso. The most "In" streets for shopping, with great boutiques and haute couture. Walking along the narrow streets you can find other curiosities such as the mighty Pantheon on Piazza della Rotonda, the once temple dedicate to All the Gods, the Ancient Roman building is now an active Catholic church. Then, of course there is the Trevi Fountain, a little further down the streets. Make sure to take tons of pictures of this magnificent fountain that attracts so many people from all over the world, in that small square. This private tour is a whirlwind of emotions! You'll be catapulted into the Middle Ages, Ancient Roman Times, then to Renaissance times, and back to Roman times. With a stop to grab a quick bite to eat, if you like. Your tour driver will know the perfect place. In fact, near the end of the tour, you will have to make another mandatory stop at the Aventine Hill, another majestic hill, hosting picture perfect views of the Eternal City. Then head to the Circus Maximus, where chariot races were performed in imperial Rome, as we can see in one of the classic American movies, Ben Hur. At the end of the tour, your tour driver will take you wherever you like to be dropped off at, hotel or other. This itinerary can be tailored and can change, so it's not a strict preview. All this is just to give you a taste of all the wonderful places you could see during your time out on the streets of Rome. *Upon request, the icing on the cake would be to reserve one of our professional guides: if you want to enrich your activity, we highly recommend selecting the service of one of our expertise guides for the day!

Capitoline Hill is another of Rome's 7 Hills, and it's, to this day, the Political life of Rome (location of the Mayor's office), the square on top of the hill is a beautiful artful creation of Michelangelo himself, surrounded by Medieval and Renaissance buildings, such as the Town hall and the Capitoline Museums. The peculiar aspect of Capitoline Hill is that it is placed between two different Eras in Time: Past and present co-exist. The Roman Forum behind it and the present with the busy square of Piazza Venezia, surrounded by Renaissance buildings, that encompass Via Del Corso, one of the most famous shopping districts in the Capital. Driving across Via del Corso, several narrow streets intersect. Many of which will bring you to discover hidden gems like the Pantheon. Don't be fooled by the Temple shaped building, with Latin inscriptions. It was built in Roman times, to worship "All Gods" but it is, to this day, one of the most beautiful and still active Catholic churches in Italy. Hosting incredible artworks and mausoleums of several important people in history. Before you'll know it, you will reach the monumental Trevi Fountain, for a toss of the coin. Speaking of Fountains, a stop by the adjacent Piazza Navona is highly recommended. A renaissance beauty, dotted with three outstanding artistic fountains, such as the famous Fountain of the 4 Rivers, by Bernini, topped with an Egyptian obelisque, so fascinating. Then, of course, there is the Spanish Steps the iconic stair case, shaped like the wings of a butterfly. Before your private tour of Rome and Vatican continues your tour driver and your guide will be happy to recommend one of the nearby restaurants or Trattorias to enjoy a delicious, traditional lunch. You’ll then continue on the Vatican tour of the Museums and Sistine Chapel! The Vatican Museums contain an incredible collection of art and treasures. Your guide will walk you through a portion of this fascinating museum. Then you will reach the one and only Sistine Chapel. The ultimate masterpiece by Michelangelo, including wonderful frescoes of the CREATION and the LAST JUDGEMENT. But the walls and ceiling on the whole Chapel are one major work of art, to which other artists contributed, such as Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Pinturicchio. And finally, a visit at the Magnificent Saint Peter’s Basilica. You’ll see one of a kind masterpieces like Michelangelo’s PIETA and the bronze canopy over the high ALTAR by BERNINI. Saint Peter’s Square is another of Bernini’s creations. It is one of the loveliest squares in the World. Book this private shore excursion of Rome and Vatican "ALL-INCLUDED" and what you will be offered is a VIP once in a lifetime experience of the Eternal City After such an exciting and interesting day, you’ll enjoy the relaxing ride back to the cruise ship.

Since the only known public entrance to Saint Peter's would be from all the way outside in the Square (for which the lines are usually very long) our guides have permission to enter the Basilica directly from inside the Vatican, after you've visited the Sistine Chapel! Visiting the Basilica other than with the guide would not be possible. Since it's entrance is free, it is usually very crowded, lines are very long not leaving enough time for you to visit it, if without a guide Since we have top level experts, the costs are appropriate to the quality of service. The most incredible beauty awaits! Visiting the Vatican Museums on your own, will allow you to visit the different wings , like Raphael's Rooms, Cortile Della Pigna, Belvedere, Gallery of Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries or the Gallery of Maps. And the Sistine Chapel. Since the Basilica of Sain't Peter's has free access, they've devoted it's entrance directly from Saint Peter's Square, so there isn't a way to enter the Basilica from inside the Museums. Just know that depending on the number of visits in a day, some wings might be closed. But this won't matter at all, we can assure you, there is just so much to see, you'll hardly even notice! Last but not least, on this Rome and Vatican tour, the magnificent Sistine Chapel! This incredible masterpiece, Michelangelo's heritage. We don't want to say too much about it, because we don't want to spoil the surprise. Just know that you will have some time, inside this chapel, to take a moment. To reflect on the overwhelming beauty. Take a seat in one of the chairs placed at it's sides, or stand in the middle and look up, to study the different details of the scenes and stories that have inspired the artist. Then you'll head to the exit, walking along the famous spiral stairwell. Still in awe, after the incredible experience.
