Why are British pair Murray and Raducanu not playing?

British pair Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu are not taking part in the Italian capital this year.

Murray has been practising on clay as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury and will return at next week's ATP Challenger Tour in Bordeaux before playing at the Geneva Open, indicating he is planning on playing in the French Open later this month.

Andy Murray celebrated his 29th birthday in 2016 by beating Novak Djokovic in the Rome Masters final with possibly his greatest match point ever

The 36-year-old, who is expected to retire at some point this season, has been sidelined since late March after damaging ankle ligaments in a third-round match against Tomas Machac at the Miami Open .

Raducanu's current plans are to compete in Strasbourg , but she is also entered into qualifying for the French Open unless she receives a wild card into the main draw.

In the men's draw, home favourite Jannik Sinner (hip), Carlos Alcaraz (forearm) are also absent due to injury, while defending women's champion Elina Rybakina withdrew due to illness.

The third clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the season sees the world's best players compete at the tournament, held at the iconic Foro Italico in Rome.

World No 1 Novak Djokovic returned to action in preparation for the French Open, with 'King of Clay' Rafael Nadal hoping to continue building up to Roland Garros at the tournament where he is a 14-time champion, but both have made early exits.

As with the Madrid Open, the 32 seeds at the Italian Open received a first-round bye, so entered the tournament in the second round.

Play will start at 10am UK time every day until Thursday, May 16 when it begins at midday. There will be evening sessions starting at 6pm each day until finals weekend, when play starts at midday on both days.

The finals will be held on the weekend of May 18.

Who are the defending Italian Open champions?

Medvedev won the 2023 singles title, his first clay-court trophy, with a 7-5 7-5 victory against Holger Rune.

Rybakina won the second WTA 1000 title of her career last year, defeating Anhelina Kalinina in the final 6-4 1-0 ret. Kalinina retired in the final with a left thigh injury.

Madrid Open 2024 tennis: Australia’s Jordan Thompson wins maiden ATP Masters 1000 title

Thompson, now a six-time ATP Tour doubles champion, had teamed with Sebastian Korda for the first time. It was the duo’s maiden ATP Masters 1000 doubles title.

Australian tennis player Jordan Thompson , partnering USA’s Sebastian Korda, won the Madrid Open 2024 men’s doubles title at the Manolo Santana Stadium on Saturday.

In the final between two unseeded pairs at the clay court tournament, Thompson and Korda defeated Uruguay’s Ariel Behar and Czechia’s Adam Pavlasek 6-3, 7(9)-6(7) in 77 minutes to win their maiden ATP Masters 1000 tennis title in doubles.

Thompson is now a six-time ATP Tour doubles champion. The 30-year-old teamed up with Sebastian Korda for the first time with the duo clinching their maiden ATP Masters 1000 doubles title.

Thompson and Korda entered the main Madrid Open main draw by using a spot reserved for singles players as part of a trial for a new doubles format.

Korda and Thompson got a crucial break in the fourth game and went on to win the first set. The Australian-American duo was unable to find a break in the second set but saved a crucial set point when trailing 7-6 in the tie-break.

In all, Korda and Thompson saved six break points against Behar and Pavlasek in the title decider.

Thompson and Korda defeated top-seeded Indo-Aussie pair Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden in the first round before getting the better of John Peers and Andres Molteni in the second.

In the quarter-finals, Thompson and Korda accounted for Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli and then staged a gritty comeback to beat Jamie Murray and Michael Venus, both former Grand Slam champions, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the semi-finals.

This was Thompson’s fifth title on the ATP Tour this year. He won the ATP 250 doubles titles in Dallas, Los Cabos and Houston in addition to clinching the singles crown in Los Cabos.

In the men’s singles, Australia’s Alex de Minaur, seeded 10th, and Max Purcell failed to progress past the round of 64.

In the WTA events, Daria Saville was ousted in the round of 64 while Ellen Perez and her American partner Nicole Melichar-Martinez were knocked out in the first round of doubles.
