Guide to the Best Winery Tours in Austin
- September 20, 2023
Lauren Critzer
Uncorking austin: your insider guide to the best winery tours.
Pop the cork and pour yourself a glass, we are about to delve into Austin’s wine making landscape. With posh tasting rooms, alluring vineyards, rampant Texas hospitality, and diverse wine varieties that would make even Dionysus swoon, Austin, Texas is undeniably a winelover’s paradise.
The Underrated Wine Paradise
Nicknamed as the “Live Music Capital of the World”, Austin is famed for its vibrant music scene, but less known for its active wine culture. The city boasts a diverse array of wineries, each as distinctive as the grapes ripened in its vineyards, and home to a wine culture that beautifully complements the city’s Texas barbecue and rock and roll vibe.
The local terroir, bountiful with varying soil types, provides suitable conditions for growing several grape varieties. This terrain diversity, coupled with the innovative techniques of local winemakers, result in wines that exude a unique depth of flavors, so distinct, that they have successfully tasted their way into the global wine scene.
Exploring Austin one Sip at a Time: The Top Winery Tours
Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or a budding enthusiast, our local winery tours have something exquisite to offer if you are ready to embark on a journey exploring flavors and techniques that have shaped Austin’s wine scene.

- Community building: The open, laid-back atmosphere embraces a communal spirit, encouraging patrons to bond over a shared love of fine wine.
- Blend Your Wine: Participate in an exclusive wine-blending session to mix and match varietals and create your custom blend.

Tips for a Memorable Winery Tour
Embarking on your wine tour requires some planning;
- Book in Advance : Wineries recommend reservations for tours and tastings, especially on weekends.
- Safe Travel : Assign a designated driver to ensure a safe return trip.
- A Slow-Paced Experience : Wine tasting isn’t a race, savor each sip before exploring the next, dress comfortably, and stay hydrated.
- Local Varieties : Don’t forget to try indigenous varietals like the Tempranillo and Viognier, the hallmark of Austin’s vineyards.
Celebrating Austin’s Wine Culture
With stunning vineyards, diverse vintages, and hosts who charm with their Texas charm, Austin has it all to give you the tour of a lifetime. So, whether you’re winery hopping in Driftwood or attending a vineyard tour at Duchman, rest assured knowing your glass will always be filled to the brim with the best the Austin wine scene has to offer.
Here’s to raising a toast to the picturesque vineyards of Austin, incredible winemaking precision, and, of course, to you, the explorers who bring stories to life with every sip. As always, drink responsibly and remember – “Life is too short to drink bad wine.”
Local Footnote: While reveling in the wine culture, let’s also pledge to respect the land and the people that make these experiences come alive. Enjoy responsibly, and do your bit in keeping these charming locales pristine by leaving no trace.
End of the tour! Your guide to the best winery tours in Austin says Goodbye!
I was born in Charlottesville, Virginia and after college, I moved to San Francisco to explore new opportunities and broaden my horizons. I fell in love with the city's vibrant culture and unique atmosphere, but eventually, I moved again, this time to Austin, Texas.
As much as I loved living in different parts of the country, having a baby boy brought me back to my hometown in Charlottesville, where I now live with my husband, our little one, and two furry friends. I enjoy going to wineries, taking my pups everywhere, and spending quality time with my family.

Wineries in Austin
Austin’s winery scene is full of options to grab a glass, or a bottle, direct from the makers themselves at unique urban wineries around Austin. These winemakers hit the road and compulsively search for the best grapes around the country, bringing the fruits of their labor back to Austin to make some excellent wine.
The Austin Winery Known for its friendly and knowledgeable staff, this winery is stripping away the pretense of wine and making it more approachable to drink and enjoy. Start out with a glass of Texas High Plains Rosé with hints of fresh strawberries.
C.L. Butaud This Texas Hill Country small-batch winery has a tasting room in southwest Austin, open Friday through Sunday. Sip ultra-premium wines made from 100% Texas grapes in their indoor and outdoor tasting space. The Tempranillo is a staple at this winery, showcasing how delicious sustainable farming practices can be!
Wine for the People One of few female winemakers in Texas, Rae Wilson has been creating delightful wine for over 10 years. Did you know that Austin drinks more rosé annually than Dallas and Houston combined? Try the flagship Dandy Rosé, a dry, bright and flavorful wine, or grab a bottle of the La Valetía which features local artwork on the bottle.
Meridian Hive Meadery These innovative crafters are putting a modern touch on the ancient beverage of honey wine, also known as mead. From dry wine-like mead to a lightly sweetened ciderey beverage, you can try a wide variety of the age-old favorite. Where to Try Hill Country Wines in Austin
Can’t make it out to the Texas Hill Country wineries? Not a problem. Here are some Austin spots that pour their wines.
Wanderlust Wine Co. Try wine on tap at two of the coolest urban tasting rooms in the country. With a location in Downtown Austin and another in East Austin, Wanderlust Wine Co. serves up a huge selection of wines, including their own house-produced wines and vintages from local Becker Vineyards, Pedernales Cellars and The Austin Winery. This hidden gem hosts fun weekly events at both of its locations and offers 50% off all wines on tap on Wednesdays.
The southern-inspired Jack Allen's Kitchen serves up farm-to-table fare alongside Texas wines like Becker's Tempranillo and William Chris' Mourvedre. Manor's Dai Due offers an extensive selection of Hill Country wines including Vermentino from Duchman Family Winery and Southold Farm + Cellar's Sangiovese.
Cannon + Belle serves Becker Vineyards’ Provencal Rosé by the glass or bottle. The iconic Driskill Bar offers Texas Hill Country wines from Flat Creek Estate Winery and Pedernales Cellars (subject to change).

Texas Tipsy Tours offers Dripping Springs wine tours from Austin and the Texas Hill Country. Please choose from our custom private tours.
Dripping Springs wineries are a popular stop on Austin wine tours due to their proximity to the city. The 290 wine trail is located just southwest of Austin. Along 290, you will find the towns of Dripping Springs/Driftwood, Johnson City, Hye, Stonewall, and finally, the wildly well-known wine region of Texas, Fredericksburg. These towns, ultimately blending in together, are still unique in their rights. This is easily seen by the apparent difference in the landscape of the rolling hill country of Dripping Springs to the flatlands of Fredericksburg, covered with vineyards and tasting rooms.
Imagine you and your best babes sitting around a chic-modern tasting room overlooking the lush vineyards of a notable Texas winery, drinking a glass of a smooth Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah blend. Or maybe you are more into a glass of crisp Viognier. That’s why you booked your trip to Texas after all, right- for Texas wine country!? You are deep into the planning process and don’t know what to book next.
Texas Hill Country Wineries organizes four unique events annually, most notably the Texas Wine Month Passport in October. Purchase a passport for a full complimentary tasting at each winery. With a limit of four wineries a day, you can space out your tour of the Texas hill country wineries throughout October. They do sell out, so don’t even think about not purchasing- and hire a driver for your day so you can really enjoy!
Are you planning a stay in Dripping Springs? Check out our mention in “I Love Dripping Springs” Travel Guide. One important thing to remember when picking out wineries for your tour is whether or not they offer wine grown from Texas grapes, which is not true of all wineries in Texas. It is even harder to find a wine that is grown from 100% Texas-grown grapes.
Dripping Springs Wine Tour Wineries
The Dripping Springs Area:
To give you perspective, Dripping Springs and Driftwood are about 45 minutes from Downtown Austin. Due to their proximity, many groups doing an Austin wine tour prefer to visit this area. I often lump these two towns in together, as they are adjacent to each other and host a handful of wineries. Here, you will find stunning views of the Texas Hill Country—rolling hills, backroads, and large shade trees covering the wineries.
Central Texas Limo Services:
There are so many wineries in so little time. We always promote safe driving, so we recommend a designated driver or, better yet- a luxury tour company. Contact Texas Tipsy Tours at [email protected] to book your tour or get more information. Cheers!

Fall Creek Vineyards- Driftwood
Fall Creek is the oldest winery in the Texas Hill Country. While the estate vineyard is in Tow, the Fall Creek Winery in Driftwood also offers views of the grapes walking up to their tasting room AND a homey tasting room feeling. They do offer 100% Texas grown-grapes from several estate and farmer-owner vineyards. If you are looking for truly premium 100% Texas wine, this is a must-go for your Texas wine-tasting experience. This is the best way to get an authentic taste of the different varietals in Texas. You won’t be disappointed!
Their tasting room is a beautiful estate that was previously someone’s home before Fall Creek renovated and made it their own while still keeping the charm and comfort. Their tasting room features tables set up on the enclosed patio (great for a nice Texas sunshine day) overlooking a pool and a beautifully manicured lawn complete with blooming flowers in the spring. Many tables are also set up inside the estate to offer a more intimate setting. Make this your first stop when planning your wine tasting in Austin!
Duchman Winery- Driftwood, Texas
Duchman is 100% Texas wine, but it is a better option for Italian wine lovers, as it often features Italian varietals, including Sangiovese, Dolcetto, and Vermentino. These grapes have been grown in the Texas high plains as the climate is most similar to that of Italy.
The tasting room features Italian vibes, and the entrance hosts Instagram-worthy shots. However, the tasting room is often very crowded, and reservations for tastings are currently unavailable. On tour, we will purchase wine bottles to share so your group can sit outdoors (or have limited seating inside on a first-come, first-served basis). If you are looking for a great experience with informative wine tenders, this might not be the place for you. However, if you want to grab a good glass of wine, take some pictures, and sit outside with a picnic lunch (or, better yet, a pizza from Trattoria Lisina next door), this is a good option.
Wimberley Valley Winery- Wimberley, Texas
While technically not located in Dripping Springs or Driftwood, Wimberley Valley Winery is located in Wimberley, a small town next to Driftwood. It is just a short drive (20 minutes from Fall Creek, for reference). This winery does not offer 100% Texas wines and is a better option for those looking for sweet wines, as it offers wines such as apple, blueberry, and blackberry.
The property here is beautiful, with abundant outdoor seating and extensive large oak trees covering the property and providing shade from the Texas heat. The winery offers a unique livestock experience on neighboring land that often comes up to the fence. Again, the wine choices are not for everyone, but the property makes up for it!

Texas Hill Country: Beyond Dripping Springs Wine Tours
During your tour of Texas wineries in the Dripping Springs/Driftwood area, you can undoubtedly find a premier selection of wine and some of the best views of the Texas hill country. The shorter distance from Austin, Texas, is largely the factor that seals the deal for most groups seeking transportation out of Austin.
However, if you are a wine aficionado, you may consider taking the longer route to the well-known wine region of Fredericksburg, Texas. See our Fredericksburg Wine Tour Guide here. Here, you can find many wineries that offer premium 100%-Texas wines. The transportation time from Downtown Austin is closer to about an hour and a half. The landscape changes here to flat land where you can see miles and miles of vineyards and tasting rooms. There will indeed be something for everyone in Fredericksburg.
The above descriptions are based on my personal experience visiting the wineries, my experience with the wineries as the owner of a luxury transportation company, Texas Tipsy Tours, specializing in winery tours, and my customers’ feedback on the wine, experience, and customer service.
