How can I force Safari to perform a full page reload, without using the mouse?

I'm using Safari to preview web pages as I develop them on my local server. I've got 'Disable Caches' checked in the Develop menu. And yet Safari is still working from a cached version of a stylesheet that's linked from the HTML file being displayed.

I can sometimes override this by Option-clicking the reload button in the location bar, but I want to refresh the page automatically when I save the CSS file. At the moment I'm doing it using an AppleScript that's bound to the Save action in my text editor. I could see using Keyboard Maestro instead. But I need some consistent way to force Safari to do a full reload from the keyboard.

Enable the Develop menu from Safari menu - Preferences - Advanced .

On Safari version 11.1 and above :

CMD + OPTION + R reloads the page ignoring cache.

On Safari version 9 and above :

CMD + SHIFT + R reloads the page ignoring cache.

Emptying caches seems not to reload the stylesheets everytimes…

On Safari below version 9 :

Empty cache and then reload so full "hot key" would be :

CMD + OPTION + E

CMD + R to refresh the page

Of course probably turning opening and closing a New Private Window from the File would also work but…

The shortcut has now changed to OPTION + CMD + R . (Safari 11.1)

There is an option in the menubar Develop->Disable Caches. This is true for Safari 5.1. I'm not sure for the rest.

Turn on Private mode and refresh the page. It won't get it from the cache in private mode.

Hard refresh was removed as a keyboard shortcut in Safari 5. The old command for that was ⌘ + SHIFT + R

CTRL + F5 May work but I can't test here.

Workaround: in the develop menu, select "start debugging javascript" and it must reload the code properly. You can then stop debugging... I know it's not a clean solution and I'm not sure if it works always or in all versions, but it's working for me now.

I stumble upon this question and apparently the current answers do not work.

Issue is currently CMD + ALT + R opens the Responsive design.

However if the inspector is open via CMD + ALT + I , then the same shortcut does a clean refresh.

Current Safari Version: 12.1.2

CMD + L focus on the address bar SHIFT + ALT + ENTER full reload for the current address

It seems to work on Safari 9

Go to Safari's preferences and tick "Show develop menu". In the develop menu, click disable Caches.

4 Ways to Refresh Webpages in Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

How to Refresh Webpages in Safari on iPhone and iPad

When using Safari on your iPhone or iPad, use the Reload icon to reload a page. Or, if your device is updated, use the pull-to-refresh option. You can also use keyboard shortcuts, if available. Or, force the browser to close and restart. Thus, reloading the page in the process. Here’s a step-by-step look for clarity.

1. Using the Address Bar

Step 1: Depending on your device’s settings, go to the address bar at the top or bottom of the page in Safari.

Step 2: Here, tap on the Reload icon.

Wait for the page to finish reloading. If the address bar is not visible, use your finger to move the page up or down. Once you see it, tap on the Reload icon accordingly. This will reload the page in Safari.

2. Through the Pull-to-Refresh Feature

If your iPhone runs iOS 15 or higher, you can use the pull-to-refresh option. Using this, you can pull the webpage down and wait for it to refresh and reload.

Step 1: Go to the relevant tab in Safari.

Step 2: Now, hold and pull down from the top half of the page. Release the page once you see the reload icon appear.

Once you release the page, it should automatically refresh all the information. If this doesn’t work, check your device’s software version and try again.

As long as you have a compatible wireless keyboard , you can connect it to your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth . This can not only aid in typing but also allow you to use keyboard shortcuts on your Apple device. Then, use the Cmd + R shortcut on the wireless keyboard and reload the page without touching the screen.

4. Force Close and Restart Safari

If you can’t use the abovementioned methods, force Safari to close altogether on your iPhone or iPad. This can help solve any glitches with the browser as well. Once the browser reopens, it should refresh the page as well. Here’s how.

Step 1: Swipe up from the bottom of the page to open background apps. Or, if your device has a Home button, double-press it.

Step 2: Once the background apps are visible, hold and swipe up on Safari.

Auto Reload is Now Free and Open Source

Auto Reload, a Safari extension for automatically refreshing web pages, is now free and open source under MIT license. Downloading via the Mac app store for $.99 will continue to be the recommended option for people who prefer the convenience of automatic updates and would like to support the project. Downloads for installing without the app store are available from the Auto Reload GitHub project .

My Mac app development journey has been a great experience and if open sourcing this trivial bit of code inspires just one other dev to give it a go, or helps someone find success then I’ll call it “mission accomplished” with this project.

The funny thing is, I hate browser extensions. I usually avoid them but there’s just some functionality I can’t do without, like auto refresh and a password manager. When Apple radically overhauled Safari extensions, the old extension I came to depend on no longer worked. At the time I was setting up mission control style monitor wall and was proper mad when suddenly my only option was to install a different web browser. If there’s one thing I dislike more than browser plugins, it’s replacing the default browser with something different and having yet another maintenance concern. The effort required to turn a fresh MacOS install into a digital sign server should be near zero in my opinion.

I’m not one to let a good nerd rage go to waste, so I dove into Xcode and Swift to code up a quick app. I originally was going to make it free for everyone, but then I thought, “Hey, I’m not paying Apple developer fees for the privilege of distributing a feature that they messed up.” and Auto Reload got a $.99 price tag.

The changes to Safari were fantastic in my opinion. Browser add-ons are one of the last scourges of personal computing. Heck yes I want the code scanned and signed and everything to be sandboxed with clear permissions. Thank god, put as many warnings as possible between my dad and malware. Working with Xcode and the Mac App store is also a lesson in class act management of software distribution. While others (Chrome Web Store, Mozilla Add-ons) may be free, the Mac App Store is the reference implementation others should follow.

With that in mind, there are some limitations to distribution exclusively through the app store. Most prominent is that users cannot choose which version they’d like installed. It’s a feature, most people just want the latest version I think and prefer auto updates that keep their computer running smoothly. After shipping a major update though I got more than a few emails and reviews from users asking if they could revert to the older version.

That got me thinking. These users are my customers. I believe they have should have the ability to run any version they like. It’s what I would want. I don’t recommend running software that’s unstable, but they’re adults and should be able to do what they like with what they paid for. It’s not worth the effort creating a paywall website for such a small app, so really the only sane option was public binaries. If I’m releasing the binaries, then I thought, “Why not go all in and release the code?” Again, it’s what I would want.

So in summary, my first year as a Mac app developer with a simple store offering has taught me a lot. It has corrected and enhanced much of my understanding of what it means to ship software that makes money. While I’ll continue to maintain Auto Reload with a narrow scope focused on stability, I now look forward most to it helping other developers on journeys of their own.

This article teaches you what the F5 key equivalent is on Mac and how to refresh all major browsers, including Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

How Do You Refresh on a Mac?

Pressing F5 is a well-known shortcut for refreshing a web browser, website, or webpage on Windows platforms, but using this shortcut on a Mac produces a different result.

Instead of using F5, Command+R (or cmd+r) is the shortcut you’ll want to use to perform a refresh on Mac platforms. Of course, this applies to the majority of Mac web browsers, too.

If you find that Command+R isn't refreshing a page, it could be due to conflicting shortcuts. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts  to make sure the shortcut is assigned correctly.

Sometimes, a standard refresh isn’t enough to fix a web page that isn’t displaying correctly or shows outdated information. In this case, you’ll want to try a hard refresh.

A hard refresh forces the web browser to clear its local copy of the webpage (cache) and download the latest version from the site server. 

To perform a hard refresh, you’ll need to modify the standard Command+R input, but the key combination will be a bit different depending on which browser you use.

• Safari and Opera: Press Command+Option+R
• Chrome, Firefox, and Edge: Press Shift+Command+R

You can also perform a hard refresh by holding the Shift key and clicking the refresh button on your browser.

In addition to the cmd+r shortcut, most Mac browsers include a refresh button in their toolbar.

Rather than refresh web pages, the F5 key on a Mac typically decreases your keyboard’s brightness (if it’s backlit). You’ll typically only see this on compatible MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models. Otherwise, it does nothing.

How Do I Refresh My Mac Desktop?

In addition to browsers, you can use the Command+R shortcut to refresh many Mac apps, such as the Mac App Store. One notable exception is Mac's file system manager (called the Finder ), which doesn’t have a direct refresh button. Unfortunately, this also means you can’t use a keyboard shortcut to refresh Finder, which can be annoying if, for example, you just added new files to a folder and Finder isn’t displaying them.

Fortunately, there is a workaround to this issue. You can use the Back button (<-) followed by the Forward button (->) in the top left of the Finder app, which should refresh the contents of a folder. If that doesn’t work, you can use Command+Option+Escape (ESC) to Force Quit the app.

How you refresh your email inbox depends on your email client. If you're using Apple Mail, select the Send/Receive button, which looks like a letter, to check for new messages and refresh your inbox. Or, select the Mailbox tab and click Get New Mail . There's also a keyboard shortcut: press Shift + Command + N to refresh your inbox. If you're using Gmail, select the Refresh button just below the Search Mail bar.

If you're receiving iMessages on your Mac and notice your messages aren't syncing, there are a few things to try to refresh iMessage. First, try toggling off iMessage on your iPhone and your Mac. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages and toggle off iMessage. On your Mac, open the Messages app, go to Preferences , and then choose your account and sign out. Next, sign back in on both devices and see if this solves the problem. Another troubleshooting step: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive . Under You can receive iMessage to and reply from , make sure you have the correct phone number or email address checked.

To force iPhoto to refresh, try restarting your Mac. Alternatively, quit iPhoto, then type Activity Monitor into Spotlight Search and open Activity Monitor. Search the term photo , then look for an iCloud Photos process. Select the X at the top to quit the process. When you open iPhoto again, the app should refresh the photostream.

How to disable page auto-refresh on Safari Mac

There’s a reason why Safari is so popular among Mac users. It performs at a good speed even when the resources are low. Such an optimized browser has a fair reason to be the number one choice of many users. However, it comes with its own set of limitations. For example, when you have several tabs open, the old tabs get killed. As a result, when you revisit the old opened tabs, they start to reload.

This happens because when Safari runs out of RAM, it kills off the old tabs to make space for new pages. If you’re working on RAM intensive processes, you’ll notice this auto-reload problem more frequently. While this is a good way to allocate RAM to the more recent pages, it can be annoying when you have to go back to previously opened tabs.

The problem becomes even worse when you’re watching a movie. With the movie tab reloading again and again, you can’t have a good time for sure.

So while it’s a good feature, it can sometimes become a nuisance. How to disable page auto refresh issue on Safari Mac? Let’s see.

Let’s get started with knowing that this problem isn’t just limited to Safari. This problem (or feature) is present in most browsers such as Chrome. So some solutions mentioned here can work on the same issue with other browsers as well.

1. Restart the browser

Pretty simple – browser acting weird? Close it and turn it on again. Restarting the browser will free up the resources and give you more memory to work with. It will also help you close the tabs you no longer require.

This step is also important because some websites (especially the ones running videos or JavaScript) can freeze over time. And they can start auto-reloading again. When you close the browser, the problematic websites are closed and you get a fresh start.

2. Clear the cache

If you haven’t cleared up the browser cache for long, this might be the issue. Make sure you clear out the cookies and the cache of your browser. To clear the cache, follow these steps:

1. Open Safari

2. Go to Safari menu and select Preferences

3. Click on the Advanced tab

4. Check the box next to “Show Develop menu in menu bar.” Now you’ll be able to see Develop menu on the menu bar.

5. Click on Develop menu.

6. Select the option Empty Caches.

7. You can also clear history by going to the History menu and selecting “Clear History.”

You can also clear the cache from outside the browser. Just visit the location: Users/~/Library/Cache/com.apple.Safari

You’ll see a number of folders here. However, make sure you don’t delete all the folders given at this location. You can empty a folder by deleting its files. You can keep the folder.

3. Disable JavaScript

If it’s a specific website that creates problems because it’s got JavaScript running in the background, you can simply disable JavaScript on Safari. Here’s how to do that:

1. Visit Develop menu that you enabled in step 2.

2. Select Disable JavaScript

That’s it. With just two steps, you can disable websites from running JavaScript and thus cause the auto reload issue on Safari.

4. Use a Safari extension

While we don’t recommend using extensions, it can be an easy way out for people who don’t want to play around too much with the browser settings. Extensions such as Simple Refresh will refresh the tabs automatically even when they’re in the background. They allow you to set a time duration for refreshing. You can even set different duration for each tab.

5. Turn off content blocking

Content blocking is a great way to block ads. When it’s turned on, it disallows websites to download content to your device. While they are amazing in many ways, there are websites that start reloading when content blocking is turned on. So to limit the issue of page auto refresh on Safari, you need to turn off your content blockers. Here’s how you can do that.

2. Go to the website for which you want to disable the content blocker.

3. Open the Safari menu and click on “Settings for this website.”

4. Uncheck the box for the option “Enable content blockers.”

This will disable content blockers for that website and thus it will not auto reload. However, it will allow the website to download content on your device. This could include malicious programs as well.

6. Use only one tab

A primitive method, yes. But it’s the ultimate solution. If old tabs are auto refreshing, don’t keep any old tabs. Use only one tab at a time. If you have the habit of opening 30 tabs on one screen, this might be a problem. Switch to a single tab (or maybe just a couple of tabs at a time) and your issue might be resolved.

This is all fine, but what if the page doesn’t get auto refreshed, but instead, you see the error, “This webpage was reloaded because a problem occurred”?

In that case, you can try updating Safari. This error can sometimes arise because you’re running an older version of the browser. To do this, go to System Preferences. From here, go to Software Update. Also, make sure you update your operating system as well. Updating software doesn’t just solve most issues but it also keeps you secure from security related incidents.

7. Use another browser

If you’re using just one browser, that might be a major issue. Most users rely on different browsers for different purposes. Since most of the popular browsers keep a record of the history and cache of users, they can’t be used for secure transactions. If you want to carry out financial transactions or want to use the browser for something but don’t want anyone to snoop around on your activities, you can use a more private browser such as Kingpin .

Kingpin is a browser that works on incognito mode as default. It doesn’t store any history and all cookies are deleted as soon as the session is closed. It also has inbuilt ad blocking properties and doesn’t have the page auto refresh issue faced by Safari.

Summing it up

There are a number of approaches you can take if your tabs are getting auto refreshed every now and then. If simple browser restarting doesn’t solve the problem, you might have to play around with the settings a bit. Keep in mind that it’s always a good option to use 2-3 browsers – each for their own purpose. If you’re looking for a privacy centric browser, maybe Kingpin can be the right fit for you .

Safari 15 Auto reloading pages

Safari on my Mac ever since I upgraded to Monteray (i.e. Safari 15) has been a horrible horrible experience. Tabs randomly auto reload. They often auto close as soon as loading and sometimes they just stop all together. It's just absolutly horrible. Im using an M1 Macbook Air 2020. I want to stick with safari for the low battery consumption. I've deleted caches and history and all that and that hasnt worked it eventually goes back to this state. Is there any way to factory reset my Safari app like the way it came out of the box wiping all the data in it (Like you wipe app data in Android iygwim)? Without factory reseting MacOS as others suggested which is a ridiculous amount of work to fix one application. Also, is anyone else facing the same issue?

Are you using Tab groups? Does the auto refresh also happen on the standard Tabs, outside of Tab groups? Tabs in a tab group will auto refresh, especially when you select a tab group.

No, this is the way they are meant to work. At first I wanted to use them even for my every day sites I visit. After a couple of months I decided to use the standard tabs for my everyday surfing needs. I create a Tab group only when I want to focus on a specific topic/task. This is the only way tab groups really make sense and work well. I don't want to have a constant refreshing of my frequently used websites.

I know its an old topic, but I'm also come to the conclusion of tab group being completely useless with constant refresh tabs every time I switch to a specific group. After many months I've come back to my "old school" way by creating multiple Safari Windows with multiple tabs on each of them. It makes my workflow more cluttered, but sadly, it works and its all that matter.

iOS 15: How to Quickly Refresh a Webpage in Safari

In iOS 15, Apple has completely redesigned Safari with easier-to-reach controls in mind when you're browsing the internet. For example, the URL address bar can optionally sit at the bottom of the screen instead of up top, which makes it easier to access when you're using your iPhone with one hand.

Auto Reload is a Safari extension for automatically refreshing windows with recurring timers.

The main focus is providing said functionality with as few "add-on" side effects as possible. There is no javascript, the interface is all native controls, and no additional permissions are required. The extension ships in a basic Mac app with setup instructions. The app is purely a wrapper and does not communicate with the extension.

Installation

• Download the latest release from GitHub or purchase Auto Reload on the Mac App Store to support development and receive automatic updates
• Open the Auto Reload application
• Open Safari then go to Settings > Extensions
• Enable Auto Reload
• Use the toolbar item to start/stop reloading windows

How can I stop a website from auto-refreshing? This started recently with my Facebook feed for some reason.

Threads testing new option to let users automatically archive old posts

Meta has been experimenting with a lot of new features for Threads, its microblogging platform. Now Instagram boss Adam Mosseri revealed on Wednesday that the platform has started testing an option that will let users automatically hide old posts from Threads after a certain period of time.

Threads wants to let users easily archive old posts

In a post shared by Mosseri , the executive shows a screenshot of the new feature in action. Users will be able to choose to automatically archive posts older than a certain period of time, so that they disappear from their profile. Mosseri also said that users will always have the option of making these posts public again as they won’t be permanently deleted.

The feature is part of a test and Mosseri and his team are still not sure whether to make it officially available to everyone or not. A few weeks ago, Mosseri ran a poll on his personal profile asking what Threads users would think about automatically archiving old posts by default. The majority of votes were against the idea.

In this beta implementation, users must first opt-in to have their older posts automatically archived. The feature can end up being either scrapped or changed. While some users seem to have liked the idea, others are still skeptical about its usefulness.

A few days ago, Threads began rolling out the option to let users filter search results by the most recent rather than the suggested ones. The feature is also beta and available to a “small number of people.” The platform has also introduced sports scores into its search .

You can  download the Threads app for free on the App Store . Make sure you have the latest version of the app installed to get access to the new features.
