@loic.lagarde

@beautifuldestinations.

A hub of drop-dead amazing travel photos is what's garnered this key Instagram influencer community almost 9 million followers–and that's just for this account. Beautiful Destinations is one of seven accounts that chronicle the worlds most beautiful things, from hotels to apparel to cuisine–and puts them all at your fingertips to lust over. Their main account is what has us captivated for hours on end; we cannot get enough of the various places to go, and absolutely stunning things to see their network of talented photographers has captured.

@doyoutravel

It’s hard not to get lost in Jack Morris ’ feed of impressive photos from around the globe. He’s currently living in Bali but spends most of his time photographing and exploring the world with his other half, @gypsea_lust , and their feeds are the definition of #relationshipgoals and #travelgoals.

@gypsea_lust

From the sand dunes in Abu Dabi to ethereal ocean views in Greece, Lauren Bullen ’s photos make us wanting to book our trip to wherever she is immediately–and look as good in the bikinis she sports while doing it.

@_itsbeautifulhere

Gigi Hopkins ' feed is a free city guide to the places we want to go to now. She left her corporate job to live life on the road, and is sharing her favorite finds to her loyal audience. From the Catskills in Upstate New York to Orpheus Island in Australia, you can trust her to guide you to all of the hottest spots and hidden gems–especially when she's chatting about her hometown of Melbourne, or contributing her best tips to BAZAAR.com as one of our contributing travel editors.

@wearetravelgirls

The ultimate collection of travel images from other travel pages, @wearetravelgirls’ founders @beckyvandijk and @vanessarivers aim to curate the most cohesive feed of vibrant and informative content. What we love most? Their travel tips, which they frequently include in their captions.

@kellyalack

Kelly Lack , an alum at some of the top lifestyle companies such as Martha Stewart, One King's Lane, and Spot , delights her Instagram followers with beautifully curated images of her favorite spots (pun not intended) from her latest journeys. When you're traveling to California, hit up her Instagram account for hidden gems–she's based in San Francisco and knows the best in the West.

@annstreetstudio

One of our favorite photographers, Jamie Beck , has been capturing stunning fashion images paired with her adventures around the world for years–but her recent move to Provence has her landing a spot on this list. We've been turning to Jamie for all things French as of late; her riffs on classic art, her weekly trips to the market chronicled on her stories, and her obsession with living in a French chateau consistently has us coming back for more.

@taramilktea

Aside from being the master of food (especially sweets! ) photos and breathtaking self-portraits , Tara’s feed also includes images of jaw dropping destinations from her recent adventures to lust-worthy destinations like Chiang Mai, Shibuya, Jaipur and Finland. Her feed comes complete with perfectly styled shots, the best hotels to spend the night in and some of the best secret spots to indulge in dessert along the way.

@muradosmann & @natalyosmann

Murad and Nataly Osmann of #FollowMeTo are Instagram's original travel inspo duo, and are responsible for creating the iconic hand-holding pose we often associate with couples on the go. The Moscow-based pair doesn't just stop at jaw-dropping imagery; they travel to countries to curate the best in local designer fashion as well, and use it to style their iconic shots. Head to their accounts for the best in travel, style and some cute outtakes of how their feed takes shape.

@jackharding

Jack Harding’s landscape images are unparalleled. When you’re thinking of booking a trip, consider his adventures (and the amazing photos you'd get of them for your feed!) if you used his handle as your travel guide.

@lucylaucht

@lucylaucht’s feed looks like a gallery of images you’d want to purchase and hang on your wall. Her trips around the world and the stunning shots she takes of them will add countless cities on to your bucket list; expect stunning beaches, cityscapes and a fashion moment here and there.

@finduslost

According to Instagram, the couple that travels together, stays together. Los Angeles natives, Selena and Jacob , left their lives in California to travel and document their exotic getaways. We'll warn you, checking out their feed will likely result in some major travel envy.

@prettylittlelondon

Planning a trip to lovely London? Then you must follow this account immediately. It has photos of where you can find all the wisteria when it's in bloom, the quaintest spots for tea and a look at one of the world's best cities from every angle.

Leave it to a professional photographer and filmmaker to capture parts of the world in the most stunning and unexpected ways. Callum Snape is based in Vancouver, and so expect loads of breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, arctic wonders and dreamy lakes.

@wonderful_places

There’s a reason why this account has over 8 million(!) followers. This account is more of a community than an Insta-feed; the #wonderful_places hashtag generates over 5 million user generated photos of magical places all around the globe, all of which are curated to create the account's content. Trust–you'll want to go to every single place on their feed.

@theprettycities

For the traveler that loves pink, girly findings and flowers, this is the feed for you. There are endless photos of lush florals found in various cities across the globe as well as shots taken in must-go cafes and all the quaint streets in-between.

Here, constant traveler and food, fashion and flowers lover, Polina, fills her feed with luscious and vibrant images of her latest eats, discoveries, and experiences with her equally nomadic and sartorial friends.

@theslowtraveler

This whole feed is cohesive and tonal–we’re huge fans of the clean and minimal tones–but @theslowtraveler’s Instagram page is more than just beautiful photography. She also shares tips on how to make Instagram images really pop and includes tips and personal anecdotes in all of her captions.

The 22 Best Instagram Travel Accounts To Inspire You

instagram travel accounts to follow

Instagram is simple, it’s visual and it creates a quick emotional impact! It’s also a great way to discover new places around the world. No wonder I’m always seeking the best Instagram travel accounts to follow!

Even though I despise the direction Instagram is going, with self-proclaimed influencers spreading like wildfire ( beautypreneurs is a thing now…) I confess I do spend a significant amount of time there .

Sometimes double tapping cat videos. Sometimes stalking my friends. But I’m especially interested in new travel inspiration. And now I’m sharing them with you (the travel content, not the cats).

Best Instagram Travel Accounts to Follow >>

For this list, I tried to avoid hollow influencers who only use travel as a way of getting new backdrops for their own photos. The world needs valuable content, interesting things to learn and see and especially people who truly love to travel.

With no particular order, these are my favorite Instagram travel bloggers to feed your wanderlust (list updated May 2019). They are travel bloggers, Youtube stars, journalists or simple amateurs sharing real, honest, and interesting content.

Let’s get inspired!

1 @paulodelvalle

Paulo’s was one of the first accounts I followed in Instagram. He’s a Brazilian travel photographer, but mostly a storyteller. His amazing photos in the most varied landscapes inspired me to follow my own wanderlust dream.

Estou muito impressionado com a beleza dos templos e santuários japoneses. Cada um mais bonito que o outro! 😍 I’m really impressed with the beauty of the japanese temples and shrines. Each one prettier than the other! 😍 Tokyo, Japan. 🇯🇵 w/ @marlonduque A post shared by Paulo del Valle (@paulodelvalle) on Jan 3, 2016 at 6:11am PST

2 @youngadventuress

Liz is one of my favorite travel bloggers out there and Young Adventuress is a BIG SUCCESS in the travel blog world. What I particularly enjoy about her is how down-to-earth and unpretentious she is.

Her gallery in Instagram has bits and bobs from everywhere in the world, but mostly from the awe-inspiring New Zealand outdoors.

3 @treyratcliff

What I like the most about Trey’s body of work is that he’s not afraid of color. In fact, he’s all about color!

You can sneak peek his travel photography blog , displaying more of his amazing pictures.

4 @Tourist2Townie

I’ve been a follower of Gareth’s videos on Tourist2Townie’s Youtube channel for quite some time. I’ve always been a fan of the very down-to-earth and humble way he approaches travel, still managing to be informative and truly helpful.

His his Instagram “is secondary” (his words, not mine), but still very much worth it if you ask me.

5 @danielkordan

Daniel is a landscape photographer who shoots STUNNING pictures in remote places like Japan , Russia or Norway .

I have to confess I think this is one of the most inspiring Instagram accounts I’ve EVER come across. After all, 1M followers can’t be wrong.

6 @bemytravelmuse

I found Kristin’s Instagram very recently and made an impact on me. It’s one of those accounts you can’t stop scrolling down.

Once a former investment banker in the corporate world, Kristin is a now a travel writer exploring the world full-time. You can follow her on her blog too. Judging by her gallery, I’d say she chose the right path!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kristin Addis (@bemytravelmuse) on Apr 25, 2019 at 8:47am PDT

I’m going to be honest: I don’t know much about whoever is behind this account. In fact, I know nothing.

All I know is that the pictures here are breathtaking and make me want to go places. Apart from the visual element,there are also several inspiring descriptions. So Andy , whoever you are, you are awesome!

On her blog she writes in Spanish mainly, but her pictures on Instagram speak by themselves!

9 @AlexStrohl

What I like about Alex’s gallery is how impactful his pictures can be. A photographer keen on the more remote destinations, he is able to translate the wilderness of incredible nature landscapes directly into his shots.

Alex is one of my top favorite Instagrammers out there, so I strongly suggest take a peek at his account. His photos will surely wow you!

More than being just another National Geographic photographer, Krista has the amazing ability of telling a story. She’s in this list because of in-depth descriptions of her photos, which make the captures really come alive . With such an interesting gallery, she makes it so easy to travel along with her!

View this post on Instagram It was so normal in Myanmar to pass groups of young monks or nuns on the street or in temples….I even got cut off in traffic by monks on motor scooters! On my last night in Mandalay, I had just left the Sandamuni Pagoda when I came across these young Buddhist nuns draped in pink. I climbed Mandalay Hill into the sunset and who knows where they ended up. It is amazing how such disparate lives can pass in a flash…and how we smile at each other in our shared humanity. Thank you, Myanmar, for being friendly, welcoming, beautiful, and mysterious. I’ll be back and I hope that whatever changes as the country is opened to the world, that it doesn’t take the joy from the spirit of the beautiful Myanmar people. // #FujifilmX_US @FujifilmX_US @bhphoto #mywinteraway #FujifilmXT1 #Fujifilm @NatGeoCreative @NatGeoTravel A post shared by Krista Rossow (@kristarossow) on Mar 5, 2016 at 8:32pm PST

It just requires some hard work, and passion. 💪🏽 . There’s soo many things you can do online these days, there’s an infinite amount of opportunity, and so many resources to help you achieve goals. . 50 Best Travel Instagrammers for daily Inspiration

There are a lot of travel Instagram accounts out there and finding beautiful destinations via Instagram has never been easier.

Since I’m pretty active myself on Instagram and have been for the last few years, I’ve been lucky enough to connect with some of the best travel Instagrammers in the world.

How the best travel Instagrammers were chosen

There are so many good travel Instagram accounts out there, so of course, this list could be a lot longer. I have handpicked the best travel Instagrammers by the following criteria:

  • They are real travel influencers
  • They have beautiful feeds that are highly curated
  • They have great engagement
  • They show the best destinations around the world
  • They inspire people to follow their dreams

How to find more travel Instagram accounts

Look for suggested users.

When you follow any of the Instagram accounts above, you will also see suggested users that are similar to the one you just followed. That’s a great start to finding more talented Instagrammers.

Search popular hashtags

Another way of finding great travel Instagrammers is to search popular hashtags related to travel. You can then see the top posts and you will surely find some travel inspiration. To make it easier for you, I have listed some popular travel hashtags below.

  • #Wanderlust
  • #Beautifuldestinations
  • #Forbestravelguide
  • #Wearetravelgirls
  • #Dametraveler
  • #IamATraveler

Check who the travel bloggers and influencers follow

You can always find great Instagram accounts by looking through who the most popular travel bloggers and influencers are following.

You can also check out some of the most popular feature accounts

If you want to find new Instagrammers on a regular basis without too much effort searching, I can recommend you to follow some of the biggest feature accounts on IG. They post other people’s content and normally post different people’s work each day.

Just make sure to give some love for the content creators at times as well. A big reason how to travel influencers can produce quality content is thanks to their followers and media reach.

          View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Instagramworthyplaces (@fotoworthydestinations)

When it comes to what makes a destination Instagram -worthy, several key factors contribute to its popularity on the platform.

Firstly, Aesthetics and Scenic Beauty play a crucial role. Places with breathtaking landscapes, stunning views, colorful streets, or unique architectural wonders often capture the attention of Instagram users. Think of vibrant street art, iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, or serene beaches with crystal-clear waters – these visually appealing scenes attract numerous visitors and photographers seeking to capture and share their beauty.

Secondly, Cultural Significance and Heritage are compelling aspects. Destinations rich in culture, history, or unique traditions tend to pique curiosity. UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient ruins, traditional festivals, or communities with distinct ways of life contribute to the cultural magnetism of a place, making it more appealing for Instagram users.

Additionally, Natural Wonders and Breathtaking Landscapes are highly Instagrammable. Spectacular natural phenomena like waterfalls, mountains, forests, or pristine lakes often become the subjects of awe-inspiring photos. Destinations offering these natural marvels tend to gain popularity on social media due to their captivating beauty.

Unique Experiences and Activities also contribute significantly. Destinations that offer extraordinary experiences, like hot air balloon rides, wildlife safaris, or adventurous activities in exotic locations, become sought-after spots for travelers and Instagrammers seeking to showcase their distinct adventures and create engaging content.

Finally, Architecture and Design play their part. Cities and towns renowned for their unique architectural styles, be it modern skyscrapers, ancient temples, or charming old streets, often serve as perfect backdrops for Instagram photos, attracting visitors looking to capture their aesthetic charm.

Favourite travel memory: I was recently solo travelling in Peru, and took a day trip from Cusco to Rainbow Mountain. I was so nervous for the high altitude hike, finishing off at an elevation of just over 17,000 feet, but I managed to make it on foot instead of taking the horses they offer along the way. It was challenging, rewarding, and the views of Rainbow Mountain itself were absolutely stunning.

Favourite travel memory: Realising that overcoming your own fears is the best moment ever. Jumping in the sea to swim with a whale shark, jumping out of a plane or hiking in the mountains for three days – priceless.

Favourite destination: Since I did an exchange year, which made the country part of me, it will always be New Zealand. Open minded, friendly people, breath-taking countryside and countless memories.

Luxury travel blogger Christina has been to 55 countries. Think tanned skin, beaches, and crystal clear water – you’ll want to book a trip to paradise ASAP.

Favourite travel memory: If I could combine a few of my favourite travel memories into one perfect day, it would be waking up to a seaside breakfast on the cliffs of Bali, snorkelling in Brazil, walking with lions in Mauritius, hiking Cinque Terre in Italy, soaking up the sun in Saint Tropez, sipping on painkillers at Soggy Dollar bar in the BVI, having dinner in the Eiffel Tower, and dancing all night in the Gili Islands.

Favourite destination: Cape Town and Italy. Cape Town, South Africa blew me away. It has everything. A vibrant African, British and Dutch influenced culture, majestic landscapes at the edge of the Atlantic and Indian oceans, wildlife like no other place in the world, unbelievable beaches (some with penguins roaming around), and an incredible wine country. Italy is pure magic. It’s no question why it’s the world’s most popular tourist destination. Italy is so perfect that it doesn’t even feel real. Walking in Venice feels like you’re walking in a dream. Boating in Lake Como feels like you’ve swapped lives with George Clooney. Jumping off the rocks of the Amalfi Coast feels like you’re diving head first into the best day of your life. Listening to accordions play “that’s amore” feels like you’re starring in an old Hollywood romance. Walking the streets of the Vatican feels like you’re living in a Renaissance painting. And drinking wine in Tuscany feels a little like falling in love.

4. heartmybackpack

Silvia chose Norway as her country after travelling the world and focuses on solo female travel, with beautifully themed feed from snowy mountains to colourful cities to beaches.

Favourite travel memory: I loved hitchhiking along the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan. The landscape is stunning, and the people there were just so kind. One of the days my friends and I caught a ride with a truck driver who drove us for about 10 hours, stopping in each village we drove through to pick up local delicacies like pears and bags of boiled meat for us to try.

Favourite destination: It’s so hard to choose! I’ve fallen in love with most every country I’ve travelled through, but I guess Norway will always hold the top spot in my heart, as this is the place I’ve chosen to call my home. But I also really love Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, and Siberia.

5. saltyluxe

Favourite travel memory: Cruising the Californian coast in our vintage Kombi Van. We were on the road for 6 weeks, met the most amazing people & experienced scenery that blew us away like Joshua tree National Park, Big Sur, Yosemite & the surf coast of San Diego! We still laugh about our time spent in our trusty van, sleeping out the front of peoples mansions in Malibu, mechanical breakdowns in the desert & no showers for a week. This to me is real travel, rich in memories & good vibes to cherish forever!

Favourite destination: Belize (no doubt in my mind the best place I’ve ever been!) I could talk about this endlessly!

6. thisbatteredsuitcase

Canadian Brenna has been to 93 countries – she focuses on solo female travel with bright bold colours and an endless diversity of locations – you’ll never get bored scrolling through her feed.

Followers: 15.3k

Favourite travel memory: I’ve been very fortunate to have made some incredible memories over 11 years of travelling, but one of my favourites is also one of my most recent. Although I travel solo most of the time, I recently travelled around East Africa with my mother for six weeks. Visiting that part of the world had been my number one travel dream since I was a little girl, and we were lucky enough to see lions, cheetahs, rhinos, giraffes, leopards, and more. I’ll never forget how to felt to be surrounded by a hundred elephants as they grazed in Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park, especially with my mum by my side. It was one of the most special moments of my life so far.

Favourite destination : Picking one favourite destination is always going to be a difficult task, but the fact that I keep wanting to go back to Italy must mean something. I’ve been about a dozen times now and I never seem to run out of places I want to go, things I want to do, and food I want to eat! I love how geographically diverse the country is – from mountains to cities to the sea – as well as how deep-rooted the history and culture are. Not only that, I’ve always had an amazing time with the people I meet while there. And really, any country where it’s acceptable (or maybe expected) for me to eat pasta and drink wine all day is always going to come out on top.

Favourite travel memory: One of my favourite travel memories was when I surprised my parents by popping up in California. They had been in the US on a road trip for two weeks, and were going to California to meet family who lives there. What they didn’t know is that I booked a flight, got on a train, traveled for over 24 hours, and was waiting behind the wall in the kitchen to surprise them when they showed up. I still smile when I think about the look on my dads face when I tapped on his shoulder and he turned around.

Favourite destination: London! I was lucky enough to live there for seven months and I just keep going back. I’ll take any excuse! It’s the place in the world where I feel most at home. London has anything you could ever want, whether you are in the mood for a party, some great food or a visit to some world class museums… it’s all there. And the vibe is just so vibrant and accepting that it was very easy for me to blend right in. I’m really hoping I’ll have another stint there in the future.

Favourite travel memory: It’s hard to pinpoint, as it changes with each destination! But a recent fave was when I was walking through Longyearbyen (in Svalbard, Arctic Norway) last summer. It was past midnight but the sun was still shining bright: I was walking down the centre of the empty main road, keeping a vague eye out for rogue polar bears, and suddenly couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be in such an inaccessible and surreal place. That feeling of happiness and ‘right’ness is definitely a memory to hold onto.

Favourite destination: Has to be Colombia. It’s such a beautiful and diverse country, but the best part for me is how generous and friendly the people are – after my first visit I made such immediate close friendships with Colombians that I ended up returning at least three times over the course of the next year!

Favourite travel memory: Would take me back to the first solo trip I did to Thailand back in 2014 when I was 19. I had just arrived in Bangkok after a long flight full of turbulence and was planning on catching a train straight to Chiang Mai. After getting to the Bangkok train station at 11pm, I was told that there were no tickets left for the next train, leaving me stuck by myself, completely clueless in the middle of the night in a foreign place. I made the decision to catch a taxi into Bangkok city, where I spent the next hour walking around the streets with my backpack trying to find a spare bed. At 1am, I found a hostel, where I spent that night in complete awe of what had just happened. Although it was one of the scariest memories I’ve had travelling, it was the moment that I realised just how capable I am of achieving things on my own, and that feeling is something that cannot be beaten.

Favourite destination: Slovenia captured all of my senses and definitely filled a gap in my heart. From the exquisite scenery to the friendly faces, there wasn’t a time spent in Slovenia where I was looking for more or was unsatisfied with my decisions. I also loved that there was a lack of tourists, especially when compared to the surrounding Mediterranean countries.

My favourite travel memory: My favourite travel memory? It’s hard to pick only one after 7.5 years of full-time travel but one trip that stands out is my trip to Cuba earlier this year. The country is fascinating, some of the towns feel like they’re stuck in a time warp, and while it was initially frustrating not to have internet access because of how limited it is by the government, in the end I embraced the involuntary digital detox, because it allowed me to be more present during the trip, to take it all in, instead of wasting time on Facebook or trying to get the perfect Instagram shot. What I loved about Cuba was how friendly the people were, how colourful the towns were, how life takes place in the streets instead of behind closed doors and windows, and the simplicity of life there. The beaches were divine and the scenery was spectacular – I highly recommend visiting Cuba.

Favourite destination: I always say that I have several favourite destinations – which include Italy, Guatemala and Cambodia – but the one country I keep going back to is Mexico, so I guess that’s my No 1 destination! I love the pristine beaches on the Caribbean coast, the Spanish-colonial towns, the diverse landscapes which range from desert in the north to jungles in the south, with plenty of mountains and volcanoes in between, I love the people and the food, of course! I don’t think I’ll ever tire of visiting Mexico and finding new gems there. As for cities, my absolute favourite city in the world is New York City.

Best Travel Hashtags for Instagram

By Helene Sula

If you want to be found on Instagram organically, one of the best ways to do it is with hashtags. Especially while you're traveling and sharing photos to Instagram, you want to be able to quickly share some of the best IG hashtags so your photos will instantly be seen. With this guide you'll find the hashtags that will help you gain engagement, views, and followers with the best hashtags for travelers or if you want to get more likes on your vacation photos.

I've got the best travel hashtags to use on Instagram that you can simply copy and paste whenever you need to share! Updated for 2020!

Using Instagram hashtags is a lot like SEO (Search Engine Optimization, aka when someone finds a blog post on Google!) for a blog, when you use them correctly, the more likely you are to be found, gain engagement, and followed.

I've been using hashtags for years to be discovered on Instagram and have more people see my photos and videos. Just take a look at the engagement on this post:

best travel guide instagram

Over 100,000 accounts found me using hashtags! They are an absolute great way to gain engagement and followers on Instagram

I find it so interesting how people share photos online: their perspective, the places they travel, and the food they eat. One of the best way to see these images is Instagram . I feel like I get a glimpse of your travel destination.

One of the best ways to be found organically on Instagram is to use hashtags. You're able to connect with others online while also seeing others points of views. To get in the spirit, here are travel hashtags to use for your next adventure.

best travel guide instagram

Using travel hashtags is not only a great way to grow your Instagram engagement, it's a wonderful way to get connected with others! Using the right hashtags helps YOU be found by the right people. So make sure you're using the right ones.

Travel Hashtag Strategy

What you want to do is share hashtags that other people might use as well. I suggest using a variety of hashtags: some with high competition (meaning, lots of people are using them on Instagram), some with mid-range to low competition (meaning hashtags that lets people are using but it's still active), and hashtags related to what you are sharing (location, what you're showcasing, etc.)

I like to use hashtags that pertain to the place I'm in. For instance, #30A is the scenic highway along Florida's coast or #expatblogger if I'm talking about something about my life abroad .

Best Travel Hashtags

Below I'm going to give you 15 of the best travel hashtags along with even more ideas for you to find the best hashtags for Instagram. These are absolutely the best travel hashtags around!

Feel free to copy and paste these!

Location tags

I recommend looking generally at the hashtags on Instagram. For example, if you're in Croatia, specifically Dubrovnik look up #Dubrovnik and #Croatia and see what other people are using. So you might find:

#croatia #dubrovnik #croatiafulloflife #kroatien #ceostagram #croazia  #adiraticsea #gameofthrones  #kroatia  #dalmatica #visitcroatia #lovecroatia

Female Travel Hashtags

Again, think of a hashtag that you might use for a female travel blogger or Instagrammer. How about #travelgirl? This is a broad one, so let's dig deeper on this and find better hashtags that might help us be seen:

#dametraveler  #darlingescapes #wearetravelgirls #mytinyatlas #theprettycities  #sheisnotlost   #ladiesgoneglobal #traveldeeper #travelgirlsgo #girlsdreamtravel #globelletravels #sidewalkerdaily #girlslovetravel  #femmetravel  #thetravelwomen #travelgirl

IG hashtags for the wanderluster

We need some hashtags for our general traveling and wandering, these are some of my favorites:

#theglobewanderer #letsgoeverywhere #instapassport #abmtravelbug #travelstoke #openmyworld #tasteintravel #lonelyplanet#letsgoeverywhere #tlpicks #flashesofdelight #visualoflife #roamtheplanet #exploringtheglobe #guardiantravelsnaps

Hashtags for Travel Bloggers

Let's say you want people to read your blog post on a destination or connect with other travel bloggers? These travel hashtags are some of the best.

  Growing up I spent every Memorial Day weekend with my family hiking and staying in a small cabin in the mountains of Kauai. Some of my fondest memories and earliest sparks of interest in the outdoors stem from those 4 days of disconnecting. This year I greeted a different set of mountains. As we summited Half Dome my parents did one of my favorite ridge hikes back home, from half a world away all our hearts in the same place. This one is for you two. Vacations can provide amazing opportunities for gorgeous travel photos, whether you're jumping on a jet to a tropical island, hiking into the mountains or spending a long weekend away in your local countryside. And with powerful cameras stuffed into phones like the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Galaxy S24 Ultra , along with a plethora of  amazing mirrorless cameras from the likes of Canon, Sony and Fujifilm, getting great images doesn't mean hauling a huge kit bag with you.

I've been a professional photographer for over a decade and have traveled the world taking photos. Here, I'll take you through the essential gear you need to bring with you on your trip. I'll also recommend some extras to consider if you want to return home with creative pieces of art, rather than just holiday snaps.

Choose the right camera

While you're unlikely going to buy an entirely new camera system just for an upcoming trip, if you're in the market already for a new camera then an imminent vacation is a great excuse to invest. While traveling with a camera used to mean hauling a bulky DSLR in your backpack everywhere you go, modern mirrorless cameras are typically much smaller and lighter, making them superb for traveling. I took just my Canon R5 and a small, lightweight 50mm f1.8 lens on a three-week trip to Sicily and loved the shots I got from this compact setup.

The R5 doesn't come cheap, nor is it the smallest camera around, but it offers stunning image quality from its full-frame sensor, amazing video skills and has pro features like in-body image stabilization. Want something a bit smaller? Look towards a micro four thirds camera like the Fujifilm X-S10 or the fixed-lens X100VI. Check out my guide to the best cameras if you want inspiration on which model to go for.

Keeping your lens choices to a minimum will help reduce the weight. A standard zoom like a 24-70mm gives a great range for capturing wide, sweeping vistas, while providing enough zoom to get closer up on your subjects. I'd also recommend packing a small prime lens (like the 50mm f1.8) as these tend to be lightweight and compact enough to always have in your bag or slung around your shoulder for whenever inspiration strikes.

But maybe you don't need a camera at all -- today's top phones can take amazing images and can shoot in raw format allowing for the same sort of editing you'd typically do with images from regular cameras. The iPhone 15 Pro Max takes gorgeous images -- especially using Apple's ProRaw format -- and its multiple rear lenses give creative shooting options for whatever scene you find yourself in front of.

A person holding a Canon EOS RP

Canon's EOS RP offers full-frame quality but in a very compact size, particularly when paired with the tiny 50mm f1.8 lens.

The best travel tripod

A tripod certainly isn't essential for all travel photography, but when the light fades and you need to slow the shutter speed to several seconds to get a good exposure, you'll need one to secure your camera. You'll definitely need a tripod if you want to nail those nighttime shots overlooking a gorgeous bay, capture the stars above those snowcapped mountains, or pull off those artful long exposures of waterfalls.

A bridge over water with wispy clouds in a blue sky in the background

By using a sturdy tripod, I was able to slow the shutter speed right down to capture the motion of the water and clouds over the Forth Bridge.

Again, size matters and you should look for a compact, travel tripod that can easily fit in your backpack -- or attach to the outside of it. Modern materials like carbon fiber will keep the weight down, but they also tend to be more expensive, so you'll need to decide how much you're willing to shell out.

As its name suggests, the Peak Design travel tripod is a great tripod for traveling, thanks to its small size when folded down and its light weight. I've done all-day hikes with this strapped to my back and barely noticed its presence -- something I can't say for most tripods. Make sure to check out my full roundup of the  best tripods you can buy . Or, if weight is really an issue, you can even try using your own DIY tripod .

A person wearing a backpack-style photography bag

A proper adventure backpack

A dedicated photo bag should be high on your list. After all, you don't want your fancy new gear getting knocked around and breaking, do you? A good bag will have compartments to keep your camera safe and secure, but will also let you access it quickly. It's important, too, to find one that also has plenty of space to keep other items you'll need while out and about.

If you're going to be out with it all day, I recommend a backpack with two shoulder straps, rather than a single-strap messenger bag. It'll spread that weight over both your shoulders and keep you comfortable longer. Look for things like side-access zips, so you can quickly get your camera out when inspiration strikes; plenty of additional pockets for batteries and snacks; weather-resistant materials; and mounting points to help carry your tripod.

I've done a lot of the hard work for you in rounding up my top photography backpacks . There are options for all kinds of photography, from short city breaks to multiday hikes with lots of gear. Have a read through that list, and make sure that what you're taking is suitable for where you're going.

People walking in the foreground of a beautiful cityscape

Always keeping your camera handy means you're ever ready to shoot when you see a good opportunity.

The important extras

The list above is really the essential stuff you'll need to take with you. How much more you bring will depend on how seriously you take your photography and the sort of images you hope to take. Those of you going on wildlife safaris, for example, will benefit from packing a big telephoto zoom lens. Always consider having multiple spare batteries and a charger, as even the best cameras will tend to give you only a day of photos. There's nothing worse than getting to a beautiful afternoon destination only to find you exhausted your power in the morning. Keeping a spare in your bag will let you swap it out and keep on shooting into the evening.

The same goes for storage. It's easy to take hundreds of raw images a day in a beautiful location and all those shots can quickly fill up your card. Thankfully, SD cards are pretty cheap these days, so it's worth buying a few 64GB or 128GB cards to keep with you.

Then there's the wide array of photographic filters that may help you get certain shots. A circular polarizer can be used to help make blue skies more vivid, or reduce the reflection on water, while a neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to use long exposures to blur the motion of water, cars or people.

A marker sign in water

By using a neutral density filter, I was able to blur the motion of the water until it became a smooth and silky surface.

If you want to shoot video on your travels, you may need additional equipment, such as microphones, higher-capacity, faster storage cards and perhaps even video tripods or gimbals for smoother, professional-looking footage. Check out my guide to the  best accessories for video production  for more info.

The 50 Best Bars in North America 2024 Were Just Announced

By Charlie Hobbs

Since 2022, when World's 50 Best first began ranking North America’s 50 Best Bars, New York City and Mexico City have vied for the top spot. Always the bridesmaid, CDMX's Handshake Speakeasy has earned second place for the last two years in a row (first trailing Attaboy, then Double Chicken Please —both beloved Lower East Side joints). This year, however, the Colonia Juarez cocktail bar takes first place at long last.

While New York City is no longer top dog, its watering holes occupy second, third, and fourth place with Superbueno, Overstory , and Martiny’s, respectively. Rounding out the top five is another Mexico City establishment, Rayo.

Last year’s number one, Double Chicken Please, has fallen to seventh—but New York City continues to house more of North America’s top bars than any other city, with 12 of the US’s 26 entries. The other bars are Katana Kitten (No. 12), Employees Only (No. 15), Dante (No. 20), Attaboy (No. 31), The Dead Rabbit (No. 33), Maison Premiere (No .41), new entry Angel’s Share (No.43), and Milady’s (No.44). With the exception of Maison Premiere in Williamsburg, all of the above bars are located in downtown Manhattan.

So, what is it that pushed Handshake Speakeasy over the top this year? The details are unclear, but the bar—which is notoriously difficult to find, and therefore aptly named—has for one thing maintained its quality with nothing short of steadfast joy. Emma Sleight, 50 Best’s Head of Content, notes in a statement that the bar is “part of a strong cocktail culture in Mexico ” that warrants celebration. Adding to the mystique is bar director Eric van Beek, who with his team cooks up clarified juices, fat-washed spirits, and home-made syrups from a proper alchemist’s laboratory hidden onsite.

There are, as always, superlatives galore to be picked apart from the results. Superbueno earns the title of Disaronno Highest Entry for its debut at number two (the bar opened in early 2023) and in the process also takes the crown as the best bar in the United States. Toronto 's Civil Liberties is the best bar in Canada for the third year in the row (No. 21), while the best bar in the Caribbean is Puerto Rico ’s La Factoría (No. 18). Grand Cayman marks its first entry on the list with Library by the Sea (No. 35)—it was also recognized with the London Essence Best New Opening Award.

Also notable: San Francisco ’s True Laurel (No. 30) takes home the Kettle One Sustainable Bar Award with some much-needed representation for the West Coast ( Los Angeles has two entries, Thunderbolt at No. 8, and Mírate at No. 46.) The 270 members of the voting academy bestowed Claudia Cabrera of Mexico City’s Kaito del Valle with the Roku Industry Icon Award for her work championing female bartenders through her Japanese izakaya-style bar program.

The full list of winners can be found below, to be studied for your next few rounds of drinking on this great continent.

According to a study of global traveler’s intentions published late last year by Visa, “travel has surged post-Covid and there are no signs of retreating.” Call it revenge travel or rebound travel, but we can say from personal experience that planes are full on international routes and Americans are out there with a vengeance. The good news for wine lovers is that increasingly sophisticated travelers are influencing the choices that sommeliers are making when choosing wines for their lists. As direct air routes open up to interesting destinations beyond the grand tour stops, people who are exposed to wine from the likes of Croatia, Greece , Portugal , and southern Italy are taking note of what they’re drinking and asking for bottles back home. While a recent survey of adult U.S. citizens revealed that 49 percent of respondents prefer red wine and 36 percent favor white, the travel-related action on wine lists seems to be on the white side of the menu, which may have to do with the time of year that people travel and the type of food they eat in Mediterranean, Aegean, or Adriatic settings.

Santorini White Wine

Kristen Goceljak, wine director at Saga Hospitality Group in downtown Manhattan, said she is seeing an increased demand in Greek wines thanks to diners being introduced to them during vacations. The wines overdeliver for their price, she explained, especially as compared to more classic regions. James Fairbrother, a wine and beverage consultant who was formerly the associate director of brand strategy and operations at Ardesia Wine Bar, noticed escalated interest in Assyrtiko at the establishment; he considers the crisp, mineral-driven white to be a “ Sauvignon Blanc alternative.” The craze for Assyrtiko has also been noted by Toni Calderon, CEO of O.N.E. Hospitality Group in Pennsylvania, who pointed out that clients are asking for the wines they’ve tasted on travels aboard, Assyrtiko included. “The conversation is different at tables; you can tell that people are getting out there,” she told us, adding, “When they are looking at wine lists, since they have traveled, they are asking about different regions.”

Maybe it’s the White Lotus effect , but we have observed a lot more Sicilian wine as well, especially from the volcanic soils of Mount Etna, on by-the-glass and bottle lists around New York and across the country. Made with Carricante, Etna Bianco is known for its high acidity, citrus flavors, and strong minerality. Kristie Grey, food and beverage director at McCleary’s Public House in Marietta, Penn., said she has been getting a lot of requests for wines from Mount Etna as well as other areas in southern Italy. She attributes the escalation to the number of guests that are recently back from that part of the world. It’s been said that travel makes you more interesting, and while that may depend on the individual, it is certainly adding a whole new dimension to wine lists. We can’t wait to see what the next travel hot spot will be and how it will affect what we’re all drinking.

Saguaro National Park offers travelers an iconic slice of the Southwest

best travel guide instagram

Get your camera ready for Saguaro National Park .

The park is home to the tallest cactus species in the country, the saguaro, a symbol of the Southwest. They’re particularly concentrated in the west district of the park, just outside Tuscon, Arizona.

“We like to call that one the Instagram side because you can literally go anywhere in the park, and there will be at least two or three dozen saguaros in the background of your photo,” said Cam Juárez, Community Engagement and Outreach coordinator and public information officer at the park.

Here’s what else travelers will find at Saguaro, the latest national park in USA TODAY’s yearlong series .

Why is Saguaro National Park worth seeing?

“Saguaros are super special because they only exist in this part of the world the way they do,” said Juárez. “You can visit certain parts of Mexico, you can visit certain parts of central Arizona, but you’re never going to see them the way you see them here.”

They’re not the only scenic beauties in the biodiverse park.

“Our peaks are in the neighborhood of around 9,000 feet,” Juárez said. Visitors can find aspen, pine and fir trees in its sky islands. “As you climb every few 100 feet down in elevation, you're experiencing different biomes all the way down to grasslands, to desert shrub, to basically just what you would imagine a desert to look like.”

Which side is better for Saguaro National Park?

The park is divided into east and west districts, which bookend Tucson. Tucson International is the closest airport.

“My favorite is the west district, just because I love seeing the saguaro. You're going to have 2 million, versus maybe a quarter million saguaros on the east side,” Juárez said. “But if you're a backcountry hiker and you want to hike long distances, the east district, Rincon Mountain District, is definitely better.”

He noted the Arizona Trail , from the U.S.-Mexico border up to the Grand Canyon, goes right through the east district.

Can I drive in Saguaro National Park?

Yes. There is a $25 vehicle entry fee for the park, which is cashless.

Visitors can purchase passes online at Recreation.gov or at a park kiosk using a debit or credit card.

How long does it take to go through Saguaro National Park?

You could visit both sides of the park in one day but may be better off with two.

“If you only have one day, definitely take the Cactus Forest loop ,” Juárez recommended. Cactus Forest Drive is a scenic 8-mile roadway in the east district. The west district has a 5-mile Bajada Loop Drive.

What is the best time to visit Saguaro National Park?

Juárez called October and mid-November magical. That’s just before the park’s busiest time of year, which he said runs from after Thanksgiving through April.

“Two times a year, we see a lot of rainstorms,” he added. “We have our traditional summer monsoons, and we have our winter rains. As a bimodal desert, you're going to see different blossoms at different times of the year.”

He said monsoons amplify the park’s already magnificent sunsets.

“The different colors of red and yellows and golds, coupled with purple skies, it's just everything that you see on postcards,” he said. “It just comes alive.”

What does the saguaro mean to Native Americans?

“The Tohono O’odham have a very special relationship with the park. Their whole culture revolves around the saguaro cactus, or as they call it, the Ha:san ,” Juárez said. Tribal members may harvest the fruit for traditional uses with a special permit through the Interior Department and National Park Service. “The fruit is harvested as part of their traditional medicine, their traditional foods. A lot of ceremonial wines come from that.”

He said other tribes tied to the land include Pascua Yaqui Tribe and Gila River Indian Community .

What else should visitors know about Saguaro?

“I would love for people to know that Saguaro National Park is making a concerted effort to be conscientious of the fact that the representation matters,” Juárez said. “ Friends of Saguaro National Park , in conjunction with our team here, developed what's called the Next Generation Ranger program, and it's not just a paid internship. It's an opportunity for (interns) to gain experience and gain what's called the Public Land Corps credit opportunity, which will help us diversify not just race and ethnicity but also ability and gender …  so when you walk into Saguaro National Park, you're going to run into very knowledgeable, very experienced, diverse young people that are matching our country's identity.”

Nearly 45% of the Tucson population is of Hispanic or Latino heritage, according to the U.S. Census . Several park staffers speak Spanish, including Juárez.

“It comes in handy because we're not just talking our friends to the south. We're talking all the way down to Central America and South America that are visiting national parks,” he said, adding that sometimes they’ll welcome visitors in Spanish. “You should see the look on people's faces. They're like, ‘Wow, you speak my language.’ I encourage all of my coworkers and staff people to make it a point to try to at least learn how to say welcome and hello in different languages.”

National parks for every body: How to make the outdoors more accessible

The park is also making a concerted effort to welcome guests of all abilities. Both districts offer a variety of accommodations, including accessible trails , braille and large-text versions of the park brochure, touchable exhibits, captioned programs and more.

“I definitely am an active voice, as a person with a physical disability, that says we can't just give folks a smidgen of what able-bodied individuals can get,” Juárez said. “We should make a very concerted effort to expand on everything we've done so far.”
