If you’re looking for all the amazing places to visit in Bikaner then you’ve come to the right place.

A lot of tourists who visit Rajasthan in India always choose the main cities of Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Udaipur. They don’t even think to consider this incredible city to the North West of the state.

Admittedly, I also was in that exact same boat and I am kicking myself now for not visiting sooner!

Bikaner is an incredibly underrated city.

It has all the vibrance of Rajasthan with its historic forts, colourful buildings, saris, turbans, and the desert.

But, it’s also far less touristy than the main cities making it the perfect place to see some of the ‘real’ Rajasthani charms.

From exploring temples that worship rats, walking around historic Haveli’s, visiting camel research centres, and dancing in royal palaces; I had an absolute blast here and I’m sure you will too.

Here are the most fun and unique places to visit in Bikaner!

Places to visit in Bikaner | Things to do in Bikaner

Where is Bikaner in Rajasthan?

Bikaner is located North West of Rajasthan and, you may be surprised to know, that it’s only around 100 kilometres from the Pakistan border!

It’s located in the middle of the Thar Desert, similar to Jaisalmer, and so the temperatures can reach highs of up to 50 degrees in April, May, and June.

It’s easily accessible from the likes of Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Ajmer and you can reach there within around 5 hours.

Is Bikaner worth a visit?

I would 100% recommend that you add Bikaner to your list, you won’t be disappointed!

Bikaner has so much to offer visitors in terms of forts, palaces, temples, food, sweets, shopping, and the mysteries of the desert too!

Plus, you won’t get FOMO as there are such incredible buildings full of colour, desert experiences that are no different Jaisalmer, and some of the tastiest food that the region has to offer.

It’s got its unique flavours which I’m sure you will love.

The top 12 places to visit in Bikaner

1. junagarh fort.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, not ANOTHER fort in Rajasthan. But, hear me out. Bikaner fort has something unique to offer you when you visit.

Junagarh Fort currently stands in the middle of the modern Bikaner city. It was constructed in 1589 and was called Chintamani fort in years gone by.

When the royal family decided to switch locations to Lalgarh Palace in the 20th century, they renamed the fort Junagarh Fort meaning “old” fort.

Don’t forget to climb to the top of the fort to see some of the fantastic views that it has to offer. You can see the whole city from here and it’s effortlessly picturesque.

What is inside Junagarh Fort

There are so many different eras to this fort. Of course, there are the 16th-century parts that are still in amazing condition today. But, there are also modern parts to the fort too that were added in the 19th century.

I fell in love with the mix of architecture here. From Bikaner’s signature red sandstone walls to marble facades in Mughal design. Each courtyard had something new to see.

Inside the fort are numerous palaces and rooms to fall in love with. Personally, my favourite was Chandra Mahal which was filled with gold and jewels on every surface! It was almost blinding with all that glitz.

Junargarh Fort Bikaner

Also, I loved this corridor that had the most ornate window carvings with stained glass in all different colours of the rainbow!

There are also gorgeous rooms that were painted head to toe in clouds to represent the rain as Bikaner doesn’t see much here.

I guess in those days they didn’t have TV so this was as close as they could get to see some rain in action.

There are also museums where you can learn about the royal family in Bikaner and see their extensive collection of cars and vehicles.

The great thing about exploring this fort in Bikaner is that it’s not as busy as the other forts in Rajasthan. So, you can pretty much have the place to yourself, even in peak season!

Junagarh Fort is open from 10 am – 4.30 pm and costs 50 rupees for Indian tourists and 300 rupees for foreign tourists.

2. Rampuria Haveli

Out of all the places to visit in Bikaner, this has to be the most iconic.

I don’t know about you but I love to stalk locations I’m going to visit on Pinterest! Bikaner had some amazing photos on there and one of the locations that would constantly show up was its historic Havelis in the Old Town.

These buildings are a jewel in the crown of the Walled City and have been here since the 15th century!

There are over 400 havelis that have survived through the centuries and you can really see the Rajput, Mughal, and British Colonial influence.

Rampuria Haveli Bikaner

The most famous of these buildings is the iconic Rampuria Haveli which can be found on Joshiwara street. The famous author Aldous Huxley called this building “pride of Bikaner” and he’s not wrong, it is the most picture-worthy spot.

Nowadays these are mostly empty and owned by wealthy families who moved to Mumbai/Delhi.

But, some of these buildings have also been transformed into museums. So, if you were feeling nosy to look inside, I’d say go for it!

All of the Havelis are made of the signature red sandstone in Bikaner with exquisite carving work. I could have spent all day taking photographs of them.

Unfortunately, you cannot go inside Rampuria Haveli, but it is a beautiful homestay you can book here . You can visit the outside of the Havelis 24 hours a day. Definitely best paired with a walking tour of Bikaner Old Town.

3. Streets of Bikaner Old Town

One of my favourite parts of my guided tour of Bikaner was exploring the old town or the walled city.

Bikaner was founded in the 15th century, so there’s lots of history to unfold around this area, you cannot miss it!

As well as the labyrinth of beautiful Havelis that are here, there are some gems to be found in these tiny streets.

Bhanwar Niwas Palace

Bhanwar Niwas sits in the walled city of Bikaner in Rampuria Street. It was the largest and grandest of all the havelis in the area and belonged to the Rampuria family.

Built in 1927 for Bhanwarlalji Rampuria, the design is very much of the period with a deco feel. The rooms are filled with gold furniture and it has a beautiful courtyard that sits right in the middle of it.

Today, it is known as Bhanwar Niwas Palace and is open to the public to stay for a few days. We popped in here just for a look into some of the rooms and it was an oasis of calm. Even though you’re only a few metres away from the old city!

You can have a look at booking your stay at Bhanwar Niwas by clicking here.

The man with the long moustache

When we were exploring what felt like endless streets, my guide Salender brought us to a blue house. The sign above the door was of a man pulling his moustache and all of a sudden it hit me, I had seen him before!

When I went to the Pushkar Camel Fair a few years, I saw a competition where they were measuring the best moustache. There were long ones, finely groomed ones, thick ones, and all sorts of other amazing tashes.

Amazingly enough, he recognised me! Which was a lovely surprise. We got talking and eventually, he showed me his moustache which I believe is a few metres long.

I took some fantastic photos here and I definitely think it’s worth meeting him and having a chat. Of course, I gave him a small tip for the photos as it’s how he makes a living.

If you did want to want to read more about the Bikaner camel festival read here.

Street Food & shopping

Bikaner is famous for its Namkeen, a snack kind of like Bombay mix, so you can find this being sold here in the old town in lots of places.

But, the most famous shop is Bikharam Chandmal if you were looking to sample or buy souvenirs.

Also, Bikanervala , a company that is now massive in Delhi as a sweet and Namkeen shop, had its humble beginnings in Bikaner. It started as the sweets and namkeen shop Lalji over 115 years ago!

Also here you can find many tasty street food stalls and shops selling all sorts of souvenirs and textiles.

Although Bikaner is not as famous for its textiles as Jodhpur, there are still plenty of stalls to browse and buy some beautiful gifts.

4. Bikaner Camel Research Centre

The ICAR- National Research Centre on Camel is a unique venture in India and one of the most interesting places to visit in Bikaner.

The centre has dedicated its research to studying different breeds of camel including their health, psychology, eating habits, and healing properties of their milk too. This is to further understand and protect them.

Unfortunately, due to the harsh conditions of the desert, camels are prone to skin diseases so here they get the help they need.

There are five types of camel that are protected here, the Bikaneri Camel, the Jaisalmeri Camel, Kachchhi Camel, the Mewari Camel, and the Jalori Camel.

When you visit the centre, make sure you take a good look around in all the pens at all the different camels and see if you can tell the differences between them.

My guide explained to me that Bikaner camels are the darkest, fluffiest, and have really long eyelashes.

If you’re lucky, you can also catch their milking and feeding time too. I was quite sad as some of the babies didn’t have mothers to suckle on. But, the staff are there to protect them and feed them from their own bottles.

Try camel milk kulfi!

So, as well as cooing at all the incredible camels (and BABIES) in the centre, the one thing you must try before you leave is some camel milk products.

They have camel milk chai or coffee, but the best thing is their kulfi! It’s camel milk mixed in with saffron and it makes the tastiest of treats.

You can find them being sold outside the centre right next to the ticket desk! I love ice cream and, to me, didn’t taste that different. But, I’ll leave the taste test to you.

The Bikaner Camel Research centre is open daily for visitors from 12 pm-6 pm

5. Laxmi Niwas Palace / Lalgarh Palace

If you’re into your history and love snooping in on rich family houses, then you have to check out Laxmi Niwas Palace and Lalgarh Palace nearby.

Lalgarh Palace, was built in the 20th century and still has a wing that is home to the Bikaner royal family. Laxmi Niwas Palace was built in the 19th century and used to be owned entirely by the Maharajas of Bikaner.

Now, both palaces in the same area have been converted into heritage hotels. So, anyone can explore and feel like a queen, or king for the weekend.

Even if you’re not staying here, it’s still worth having a look around as the place is almost like a museum.

Some of the rooms have great exhibits about the royal family and the area. But, I will warn you that there is a lot of taxidermy on the walls from hunts that the Maharaja used to go on.

Click here to book your stay at Laxmi Niwas Palace , or check rates for Lalgarh Palace here.

Enjoy a royal dinner at Laxmi Niwas

Even if you’re not staying at either of the palaces, it’s still worth heading here for a dinner fit for a maharaja .

They serve up the most fantastic tahli in their restaurant and also have an alfresco BBQ that you can attend. This even is lit by candlelight in the gardens of the palace with traditional Rajasthani music and dancing!

I had the pleasure of visiting both in the day and the evening to these palaces. Narendra Bhawan, the sister property, had organised a special dinner just for us in the Swan Mahal room.

Every wall was decorated in blue and golds and we had their expert chefs serve us some of their finest menu.

The whole place is truly fit for royalty, so make sure you schedule some time to enjoy it in Bikaner!

6. Bhanda Shana Jain Temple

I didn’t explore many temples in Bikaner but Bhanda Shana Jain Temple stood out to me as the most underrated.

This unassuming temple hidden in the old town was built in the 15th century, making it one of the oldest in the city. It was constructed by a man named Bhandasa Oswal.

This is a Jain temple, which is a different religion from Hinduism and is dedicated to the 5th tirthankar Sumatinatha. Apparently, there is a legend that says that 40,000 kilograms of ghee were used when the temple was built!

Although the temple appears small from the outside, the inside will amaze you! Inside, you will find the most beautiful paintings all over the walls. There is gold paint on the columns and intricate stories to be told from the artwork here.

Like most temples in India, this will get very busy in the evening time for prayer. I would recommend visiting during the day to appreciate the art.

Bhanda Shana Jain Temple is FREE to visit (but remember to give a donation), it’s open 24 hours a day!

7. Bikaner Royal Cenotaphs / Devi Kund Sagar

Just outside the city of Bikaner is the picturesque Royal Cenotaphs or, to locals, the Devi Kund Sagar.

This beautiful area filled with the finest examples of Mughal architecture is actually the cremation ground of the royal family so it’s important to remain respectful on your visit.

Make sure that you take your shoes off if you want to climb on one of the cenotaphs and you may have to pay a tip to take photos in the area.

It only costs around 10 rupees to enter and it’s incredibly worth it, especially at sunset.

On the grounds of the cenotaphs, is a small pink temple dedicated to Karni Mata. Here I met some of the locals who were sitting around the temple meditating or who had came to pray.

Karni Mata is known as the miracle goddess (more on that next) and so you’ll find lots of little trinkets and offerings made to her for wishes to be granted.

The Bikaner royal cenotaphs are open to the public Monday to Sunday – 10 am – 7 pm.

8. Karni Mata Temple

Before I even got to Bikaner, I knew I wanted to visit this temple! It’s famous for being the only temple in the entire world that worships rats.

Dedicated to Karni Mata, who was a sage and mystic in the 14th century, many people believe that she was a reincarnation of the Goddess Durga.

There are thought to be over 25,000 rats that live and are worshipped at this temple. But, why?

Well, the legend goes that Karni Mata’s son Laxman was drinking out of a pond and drowned. Karni Mata begged the God of Death, Yama, to revive him from the dead.

At first, Laxman refused but then after some convincing, he relented. He allowed Karni Mata’s son and all her male children to be reincarnated as rats. So, people believe that these rats are her reincarnated clan.

Karni Mata Temple Rat Temple in India Rats drinking milk

Although potentially meeting so many rats may seem intimidating, it’s not as scary as it sounds. There’s a big different between sewer rats and rats that are worshipped at a temple!

I personally was fascinated by my visit and couldn’t stop staring at all of them! Make sure you lookout for the white rat which is meant to bring you good fortune.

It’s located around a little far out of the city in the town of Deshnoke but there are trains that run there every four hours and journeys only cost 100 rupees.

The station is just outside the temple. Also, you can get a private taxi for around 2,000 rupees for a return journey.

Karni Mata Temple is FREE to visit but to take photos you’ll need to buy a photo pass. It’s open from 4 am – 10 pm at night.

9. Bikaner Miniature Arts Gallery

As well as Bikaner being home to the only rat temple in the world, there’s another spot that breaks a world record too!

Shiv Swami, the founder of Bikaner Miniature Arts, is a Guinness world record holder for the world’s smallest paintings.

He won the title two years in a row for the most items that have been included inside a miniature painting. It’s the size of a postage stamp and contains animals, trees, and even 1,200 individual leaves (can you imagine the immense job of the judging panel to count them all?!).

I looked at the painting myself through a magnifying glass and the detail is truly captivating.

Bikaner miniature arts | Places to visit in Bikaner

As part of my visit to his workshop, he showed me some of his art and also gave me a sample of his work on one of my fingers! It brush was so tiny, I could hardly feel it being applied. But, when I took a look, I was shocked.

Not only had he written my name, but also painted a small temple, birds, and blades of grass too. It was pretty impressive.

Some of his art here, especially the smaller pieces, take months to do. He sells many of these pieces in his workshop, so if you’re looking for a truly unique gift to take home, I’d pop along and check it out!

They also do painting classes and courses for those who are interested, take a look at their website for details.

Swami Arts is open from 6 am – 9 pm and you can meet the artist Shiv Swami inside who’ll be happy to chat with you about his work!

10. Chunnilal Tanwar (Sharbat) syrup shop

Another thing that is a famous favourite with locals in Bikaner is Chunnilal Tanwar’s natural syrup shop. They serve up a number of organic syrups made with flowers to sample in their terracotta pottery.

The owner is so famous, he’s even been featured in international newspapers!

Salender Tour guide in Bikaner

You can try rose syrup mixed with water or coca-cola, saffron syrup mixed with milk, Sandal syrup with iced water too, and many others!

By far my favourite syrup was Jasmine. It was made with filtered water and crushed ice and I have never tasted anything so refreshing in the Rajasthan heat.

I loved this syrup water so much that not only did I have three when I was here, I also continued to drink it at my hotel afterward! I wish I could have taken a bottle home but I had such limited space :( .

It’s cheap, tasty, popular with the locals, and incredibly revitalising so I would highly recommend a visit.

Chunnilal Sharbat is open from 11 am – 11 pm Monday to Sunday.

11. The Thar Desert

Similar to Jaisalmer, Bikaner is located in the middle of the Thar desert near Pakistan. So, you’re never a few kilometres away from discovering the mysteries of the sand dunes!

If you’re not planning on heading to Jaisalmer while you’re in Rajasthan, make sure that you book a trip into the desert while you’re in Bikaner.

Trips to the desert come in all sorts of itineraries. You can book a sundowner at the dunes for one evening, enjoy a camel safari into the desert, camp overnight there, or enjoy dinner there in the evening too.

As part of my trip with Narendra Bhawan, we enjoyed a romantic evening under the stars in a private part of the Thar desert just for us! It was entirely lit by candlelight and was an absolute dream.

We had a private bar set up, a grill, and a chef making expertly prepared food, sofas, and cushions to perch on. All accompanied by our own private performance of a Rajasthani band with traditional dancing.

I felt incredibly lucky to experience it. If you would like to check out Narendra Bhawan’s experiences see here.

Make sure you read my top tips for an Indian desert safari here to know how to prepare!

12. Narendra Bhawan

There are many royal palaces in Bikaner that are now luxury hotels but the one you should bookmark for your visit is Narendra Bhawan.

This Haveli was the palace of the last reigning Maharaja of Bikaner, Narendra Singh Ji. He was born in 1948, just a year after India’s independence so was inspired by the Bombay Art Deco movement and traveled extensively throughout Europe.

In 2003, after he died here, the palace was transformed into a high-end hotel for all to visit. It now has over 82+ rooms, so it’s cosy enough to feel like home.

The rooms are spacious and all have an Art Deco feel to the design. I almost sunk into the mattress it was so soft!

Narendra Bhawan Bikaner Rooms Review - Best hotel in Bikaner

As well as being a cosy retreat to get some well-needed rest, Narendra Bhawn also has one of the most spectacular pools on the strip. It’s located on their highest floor and you can see the whole city from up there.

They also have a spa where you can treat yourself to some pampering or they can organise some incredible experiences for you while you’re here. They do sundowners at the pastures, private dinner events, journeys into the desert and much more.

I was also obsessed with the food here at their signature restaurant Pearls & Chiffon (P&C). They had an international menu and both the local and international dishes were mouth-watering. I’m already dreaming of going back!

How to get around Bikaner in Rajasthan

The old town of Bikaner is easy to access on foot, so if you’re located in and around the walled city you can reach attractions in less than a few kilometres.

But, to access the new city, Karni Mata temple, or the Royal Cenotaphs, you will need a means of transport to get around.

Unfortunately, there are no Uber or Ola cabs in Bikaner just yet. But, there are plenty of rickshaws in Bikaner for short journeys.

However, if you are planning to visit a couple of attractions or places outside the city, I would hire a car for the day to make travelling around a lot easier.

Narendra Bhawan arranged a complete personalised day tour for me with a tour guide, Salender, and a luxury air-conditioned car.

I couldn’t believe it also came with a friendly driver who was also on BUTLER duties! Every time we would stop he would serve little bottles of Coca-Cola or water. It was a dream with the heat.

How to get to Bikaner in Rajasthan

Bikaner is easily accessible by public transport when you’re in the state of Rajasthan.

Plus there are direct flights to Bikaner if you’re coming from cities outside of the state, so it makes the perfect place to spend a weekend!

Direct Flights to Bikaner

Bikaner has a domestic airport which is located around 15 kilometres from the city.

There are currently direct flights that run from Delhi and Jaipur and the prices are pretty reasonable. From Jaipur, I found tickets for less than 1,500 rupees (£17!) for one way!

I always price compare my flights with Skyscanner !

Trains to Bikaner

Bikaner has a railway station, Lalgarh Junction. This connects you with the main cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, and Kota.

I always use Cleartrip to book train tickets in India as usually, the IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) website is annoying to use if you’re not from India.

Trains are comfortable but not necessarily the quickest option to travel to Bikaner if you’re in Rajasthan.

Check out my best India Train Travel tips here !

Buses to Bikaner

It may surprise you but actually, the quickest way I could find to travel from Jaipur to Bikaner was by bus!

The RSRTC (Rajasthan State Road Transportation Corporation) has a luxury AC bus that runs from Jaipur bus station straight to the Bikaner bus stand.

It only took four and a half hours on the way there and it was really comfy. We even got free water too!

Regular bus tickets cost around 650 rupees. But, ladies get a discount on tickets in Rajasthan and so my ticket cost a mere 510 rupees (£6)! Not bad.

Need more inspiration for Rajasthan?

So, that’s all the amazing places to visit in Bikaner. But, if you’re heading to more cities in Rajasthan after Bikaner, I have plenty of informative guides about the main cities there. Also, I have visited some less-visited cities and places too!

I have travelled on and off in India for three years now and extensively in Rajasthan. I also used to live in Jaipur, so I know my way around pretty well.

bikaner travel spot

Bikaner is possibly the most underrated city in Rajasthan. It is a destination that is neither widely visited nor is it known like the popular nearby cities of Jaipur , Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. In fact, it is often only seen as a good stopover en-route to Jaisalmer or Jodhpur. Except in reality, it has much more to offer than that or its famous namkeens and sweets.

Boasting plenty of ancient edifices, architectural marvels, and streets full of Instagrammable sights, Bikaner is a photographer’s paradise in every sense of the word. Home to intricate havelis, plush palaces, mesmerising forts, and a glorious past, it is a city frozen in time in the middle of the Thar Desert. From exploring splendid temples, to seeing picturesque sand dunes and cenotaphs, you will be surprised to know how much there is to grasp in Bikaner.

So, if you are looking for a city in Rajasthan that has the princely charm and grandeur that the state is famous for, but without the crowds, then Bikaner is perfect for you. In this article, I have compiled a list of the 11 best Instagrammable spots in Bikaner that I personally loved. All you have to do now is get yourself there and explore!

Table of Contents

1. Junagarh Fort

Because how can you travel to Rajasthan and not see a picturesque fort, right? Built in the late 16 th century by Raja Rai Singh, Junagarh Fort is one of the most famous landmarks of Bikaner. It is renowned for the exquisite work of sixteen rulers that called it home during different eras, showcasing several architectural designs with both Rajput and British influence.

bikaner travel spot

When visiting Junagarh Fort, you will not only see parts of the fort that were constructed in the 16 th century. But also go on a journey through time by gazing at other mahals and architectural elements that were added afterwards by succeeding kings. My favourite was the Chandra Mahal with its lavish gold plated deities, bedrooms and paintings. The detailing on the walls there was unlike anything I had seen before!

From numerous rooms and courtyards, to temples and palaces built in completely distinct decors, Junagarh Fort indeed is a must-see Instagrammable spot in Bikaner. During the two hours that my family and I spent there, I don’t think my camera stopped clicking for more than a minute or two at once.

bikaner travel spot

How to get there : Junagarh Fort is located in the middle of the main city of Bikaner and is easily accessible by taxi, auto-rickshaws, private cars and more. Since it is one of the very few forts in Rajasthan that is not built on a hilltop, you can even reach here by foot if staying nearby.

Opening times: 10 am – 4:30 pm

Best time to go: Bikaner is not that crowded in general, so anytime is good to visit most places there. But since this is the most famous spot in the city, I would still recommend to be one of the first ones in at 10 am.

We visited at 3:30 pm and were still able to take unobstructed pictures after waiting a few minutes at some spots. Still if you can, try to arrive earlier as the fort is huge and you will need more time to see it properly and not feel rushed.

Entrance Fee: INR 50 for Indian nationals and INR 300 for foreign tourists. Student discount is available with a valid ID.

2. Rampuria Haveli

Acknowledged as the pride of Bikaner, the Rampuria Haveli is a cluster of seven ornate mansions belonging to a wealthy merchant family of the bygone era. They were constructed in the 15 th century using the signature red sandstone of Bikaner called Dulmera . Today, they are widely admired and captured for their exquisite designs, jharokas and carvings.

bikaner travel spot

Honestly speaking, Rampuria Haveli is the place in Bikaner that I was the most excited to visit and photograph. The architecture of these traditional homes and their aesthetic colours always intrigued me to visit Bikaner and learn about the years of history that these small, winding lanes have witnessed. Having been there finally, I can attest that these havelis are every bit as beautiful as they look on Instagram (if not more).

If you only have time to visit one place in Bikaner and love beautiful buildings, then definitely head here. The small area with the havelis is a treat for the eyes, especially those of street photographers and door lovers. From turquoise to red, brown, golden and more, be ready to come across several Instagram-worthy doors and windows here. I loved the architecture of these havelis so much that I ended up going there twice!

bikaner travel spot

How to get there : The most photographed Rampuria Haveli (which is also a homestay!) is located on Joshiwara street in the walled city of Bikaner. The roads there aren’t that big, so it is best to hail an auto-rickshaw to drop you there or hire one for a few hours. You can also get there on foot and see the area on a heritage walking tour .

Opening times: All day

Best time to go: Sunrise or early morning is the best time to visit the Rampuria Haveli. All of them are located on a small lane that sees two way traffic throughout the day. We visited at both 6:30 am and 10 am during our stay, and found the latter a little tiring due to vehicles continuously going up and down the street. Besides, the light is also best in the morning for photography if you want to avoid backlight and shadows on the buildings.

Entrance Fee: Free

3. The Walled City of Bikaner

Although the Rampuria Havelis are the most iconic and photographed part of the walled city of Bikaner, there is a lot more to discover and capture in this area. We spent a few hours strolling in the narrow lanes there and stumbled upon many more beautiful havelis, Instagrammable doors and temples.

bikaner travel spot

Similar to other places in Rajasthan, the old city of Bikaner was also protected by a large wall. When entering or leaving this area, make sure to stop at the grand Kote Gate and snap a picture or two. It is one of the famous landmarks of Bikaner that has gone through the test of time and is still standing tall even after 500 years of existence. The many local shops and eateries dotted along the Kote Gate are worth checking out too.

If you are fond of wandering around without a plan, then keep an hour or two aside and walk the length and breadth of the Old Town streets to uncover historic gems. The popular Bhanwar Niwas Palace is also located in this part of Bikaner. Belonging to the same merchant family as the above havelis, it is now a heritage hotel that was constructed in 1927 for Bhanwarlalji Rampuria. You can enter inside and look around it’s scrumptious courtyard or stop for a meal and some tea.

CG’s tip: Bhanwar Niwas Palace was closed when I visited Bikaner, so make sure to call them up before visiting to double check.

bikaner travel spot

How to get there : The roads leading to Kote Gate are not tiny and you can easily drive there and park your car behind Ratan Bihari temple. From there, I would recommend exploring the area on foot or hiring an auto-rickshaw.

Best time to go: Early morning is an ideal time to explore the walled city too as Bikaner gets quite hot during the day. You can visit the Rampuria Haveli first and then continue on the same street to discover more architectural gems nearby. On your way back, you can stop at Kote Gate to visit the colourful bazaar and indulge in the city’s famous sweets and snacks while souvenir shopping.

4. Seth Bhandasar Jain Temple

Out of the many temples in Bikaner, Seth Bhandasar Jain Temple is the most beautiful to see. Dedicated to Sumatinatha, the 5 th Tirthankara, it is a three-storey religious landmark that is a sight to behold because of its splendid interiors. From delicate leaf-paintings and colourful frescos, to patterned mirror work and detailed stone carvings, every corner there is photo-worthy.

bikaner travel spot

The Seth Bhandasar Jain Temple (aka Bhanda Shah Jain Temple) was built in the mid-15 th century and has a fascinating tale related to its construction. According to the legends, it was made using 40,000 kg of ghee (clarified butter) in place of water in the mortar to combat the scarcity of the latter in the region. I had no clue about this before visiting, but the priest said that visitors can verify for themselves in the summer months when the ghee starts to melt and rise up. Looking back, some corners there were slippery for sure!

CG’s tip: When visiting this temple, you will have to take off your shoes. The floor was incredibly clean when I went. But if you are going there in the afternoon when the sun is up, then the floor outside can be really hot to step on (trust me, I know). Another thing to note is that you cannot wear or take any leather products inside this temple.

bikaner travel spot

How to get there : The roads leading to this temple are very narrow and cannot be easily accessed via four wheelers. I would recommend you to visit here in an auto-rickshaw or on foot for a seamless experience. This Jain Temple is only a few minutes away from Rampuria Haveli, so you can easily club your visit there with this and the other parts of the walled city.

Opening times: Morning or evening hours; as the temple closes for a few hours in the afternoon and reopens from 4 pm onwards.

Best time to go: Seth Bhandasar Jain Temple is a hidden gem in Bikaner and is largely free of tourists. However, there are often locals praying in the morning hours, so it would be best to visit when it reopens at 4 pm for nice pictures. You can snap some photos inside the temple and then also visit the top for a beautiful sunset overlooking the old city. Just make sure to not go too late as it gets crowded again for evening aarthi (prayer).

Entrance Fee: Free, but there is a INR 25 charge for videos.

5. Laxmi Niwas Palace

Laxmi Niwas Palace is the grandest amongst all the palaces in Bikaner. It was completed in 1902 and was the former residence of the late Maharaja Ganga Singh Ji. Nowadays, it is a luxury heritage hotel that is a sight for sore eyes due to its dreamlike splendour.

bikaner travel spot

The exterior of this palace-turned-hotel is massive and there are a lot of picturesque corners to admire and capture whilst there. Even if you are not planning to stay at Laxmi Niwas Palace in Bikaner, I would still recommend visiting to tour the property and have a meal in their royal dining room. The Rajasthani Thali that I had there was one of the best I have ever tasted, and I live in Rajasthan!

The Laxmi Niwas Palace is built using the traditional Dulmera sandstone of Bikaner with detailed carvings. It is made in the Indo-Saracenic style and has an abundance of beautiful sights to offer to visiting photographers. The big garden at the front of the hotel, in particular, is ideal to shoot the entire palace. The swimming pool area with the turquoise windows and rooftop with picturesque chhatris and arches are also equally photo-worthy.

bikaner travel spot

How to get there: Laxmi Niwas Palace is located on Dr. Karni Singhji Road. You can drive here in your own vehicle or hire a taxi to drop you. The guard at the entrance of the hotel will ask for the purpose of your visit, so it is best to have a lunch/dinner reservation or hotel booking from before.

Best time to go: Before sunset for sure. Since it is a luxury hotel, the property is not that crowded and you can take nice pictures without people photobombing. The sunset from their roof is really beautiful, so make sure to take photos at the ground level first and then head to the top floor. After this, you can end your visit with an early dinner in the main courtyard.

Entrance Fee: INR 500 for non-hotel guests which is deductible from your dining bill. For overnight stays, you can check the prices and availability here .

6. Lallgarh Palace

Lallgarh Palace is another luxurious palace in Bikaner. It is situated in the same complex as Laxmi Niwas Palace and was the residence of Maharaja Ganga Singh Ji. In fact, the royal family of Bikaner still has a private wing in the property, where they live even today. The other sections, however, have been restored into a heritage hotel managed by the emperor’s trust.

The Lallgarh Palace was also built in the red sandstone of Thar Desert with stone carvings. If you are fond of royal history and treasures, then you can also visit the Sadul Niwas wing of Lallgarh Palace that houses a museum dedicated to royal artefacts. But, keep in mind that visitors of just the museum aren’t allowed to access the hotel section of the property without a reservation or booking.

I personally did not get the time to tour the Lallgarh Palace from inside, but have seen beautiful pictures of its delightful interiors on Pinterest . The indoor swimming pool, in particular, looks straight out of a Wes Anderson movie. If you are visiting or staying at the nearby Laxmi Niwas Palace, then you can also get a bird’s eye perspective of Lallgarh Palace from the roof. It really is a splendid sight at sunset!

bikaner travel spot

How to get there: Lallgarh Palace is adjoining Laxmi Niwas Palace, so you can simply walk the distance between the two. You can stay at either and visit the other as per your convenience. If staying elsewhere, you can reach the palace complex by a private vehicle or taxi.

Opening times: The hotel is open all day, but Sri Sadul Museum is operational only from 10 am – 5 pm every day except Sunday.

Best time to go: It is not a very busy touristic landmark in Bikaner, so you can visit whenever you get the chance. I would just recommend to club your visit to both the palaces together to avoid coming to the same location twice.

Entrance Fee: INR 10 for the museum. For overnight stays, you can check the current rate and availability here .

7. The Thar Desert

Similar to the golden city of Jaisalmer, Bikaner is also located in the Thar Desert. If you are not travelling to the former, then make sure to at least visit the sand dunes in Bikaner to get some beautiful desert photos whilst in Rajasthan. Just keep in mind that the landscape of Bikaner is a little more humble when it comes to big dunes.

There are several activities and experiences that you can choose from to make the best out of your trip to the desert. From a camel safari at sunset, to staying overnight in a camp, to dining under the stars in the middle of nowhere, the options are nearly limitless. Irrespective of which one you go for, sand dunes and the desert will make for a great Instagram backdrop!

The Bikaner Camel Festival is also popular amongst both domestic and international tourists. It happens every year towards the end of January and is a fun event to witness and learn more about the local life. You can also visit ICAR-National Research Centre on Camel to learn more about them. After all, they are the state of animal of Rajasthan.

How to get there: Some of the safari companies in Bikaner offer pick up and drop off from/to your accommodation. If you are looking to visit on your own, then you can hire a private taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach there.

Best time to go: Sunset is the best time to visit the Thar Desert. The sand dunes can be really hot in the afternoon, so it is better to go later. After all, there are very few things that are more beautiful than a sunset in the desert.

Entrance Fee: It depends on the excursion you choose. Have a look at the offers from the popular Rao Bikaji Camel Safari here .

8. Devi Kund Sagar

Devi Kund Sagar, also known as Bikaner Royal Cenotaphs , is one of the best places to visit in Bikaner. It is a crematorium ground of the Bikaner royal family, with hundreds of beautiful cenotaphs or chattris built in their honour. These cenotaphs are particularly interesting to visit for their admirable Rajputana and Mughal architecture.

bikaner travel spot

The chattris that were constructed earlier are made in the red and pink sandstone that is seen throughout the city. The newer ones, on the other hand, are built in white marble and are equally as picturesque. The newest cenotaph at Devi Kund Sagar is of Maharaja Narendra Singh Ji, the last reigning king of Bikaner, who passed away in 2003.

When visiting the Royal Cenotaphs, remember to be respectful and to not climb on any of the cenotaphs as they are considered sacred. I have come across a few pictures on Instagram with people standing on the top, so it is important to point out that that is not actually allowed. Trust me, the pictures and videos from the ground will be just as Instagram worthy!

CG’s tip: You will be required to take your shoes off when entering. The floor can be a little dirty, so carry some dirt removal wipes to clean your feet afterwards.

bikaner travel spot

How to get there: Devi Kund Sagar is located around 9 km away from the city centre of Bikaner. I would recommend hiring a taxi or auto-rickshaw for a few hours and visiting the cenotaphs in that. The area near the cenotaphs felt a little deserted to me, so it is best to arrange for the same transport to bring you back to the main city.

Opening times: 9 am – 5 pm

Best time to go: Being a hidden gem in Bikaner, Devi Kund Sagar doesn’t see that many visitors. We went there near closing time to avoid the harsh light during the day and absolutely loved how magnificent the chhatris looked during the golden hour. There were only a handful of people at that time and the light was incredible to take photos in as well. I would recommend to avoid going in the afternoon as the floor can be really hot to walk on.

Entrance Fee: INR 5 for Indian tourists and INR 10 for foreigners.

9. Gajner Palace and Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated on the shores of the pristine Gajner Lake, the Gajner Palace is an oasis surrounded by lush green forests. It is a luxury heritage hotel that was once a hunting lodge of the rulers of Bikaner. The Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary is only a few steps away from the palace.

From beautiful pillars and domes made with red sandstone, to distinctive terraces and balconies overlooking the lake, staying at Gajner palace is perfect for you if you are looking for an escape close to nature. You can ask the property to organise a private jeep safari in the sanctuary or go on a boat ride on the lake to take the surroundings in.

The setting of the Gajner Palace is incredibly serene and the best thing is that you can visit there even when not staying at the property. Although if you can, I highly recommend spending a night (or two) there. With day visitors yet to arrive, the early morning hours are unbelievably serene with just birds and peacocks around.

How to get there: The Gajner Palace is located at an approximate distance of 33 km from the city of Bikaner. The best way to reach there from Bikaner is via taxi, which will take you around 30 minutes depending on the traffic. There are also buses leaving from Bikaner Junction to Gajner, but this option can get tiring if you are planning to return the same day.

Opening times: The hotel is open all day to guests and the Gajner wildlife sanctuary timings are 10 am – 5 pm.

Best time to go: The best time to visit Gajner Palace, Lake and Wildlife Sanctuary is morning and evening. Afternoons in Rajasthan are generally too hot to explore comfortably. More so in Bikaner, due to its close proximity to the desert. Besides, the soft light at sunrise and sunset reflects beautifully on the lake and is ideal for photos.

Entrance Fee: INR 100 for the day visitor entry. For overnight stays at Gajner Palace, you can check the prices and availability here .

10. Narendra Bhawan

Depicting glorious tales of the last reigning king of Bikaner, Maharaja Narendra Singh Ji, Narendra Bhawan is a boutique heritage hotel that also happens to be one of the iconic Instagrammable spots in Bikaner.

From artistic interiors and modern décor, to dreamlike façade and a pleasing courtyard, every corner at Narendra Bhawan is perfectly curated and designed. In the two nights that my family and I spent there, I found myself grabbing my camera every few seconds throughout our stay. Like all of this wasn’t enough, there also is a rooftop pool overlooking the entire city.

So if there is one hotel that I could recommend you to stay at when visiting Bikaner, then this aesthetic property would definitely be it. I didn’t get the opportunity to try all of their experiences during my visit, but the Merchant Trail that takes guests into the labyrinth of the Old City is perfect for those looking to explore the havelis of Bikaner with a guide.

bikaner travel spot

How to get there: Narendra Bhawan is located in Samta Nagar, not too far from Laxmi Niwas Palace. You can visit Narendra Bhawan by a taxi or auto-rickshaw. As for the way back, you can ask the hotel to arrange for a transport for you, but there are often auto-rickshaws available on standby outside.

Best time to go: The building of Narendra Bhawan looks its absolute best with soft light reflecting on it at sunrise and sunset. But if you are looking to take interior shots, then anytime during the day is good too.

Entrance Fee: Free if you are staying there or visiting for a meal. For overnight stays, check prices and availability for Narendra Bhawan here .

11. Bikaji Ki Tekri

If you were thinking that I must have covered all the forts and palaces in Bikaner by now, then you are mistaken. Built by Rao Bika, the founder of Bikaner, Bikaji Ki Tekri was actually the first fort in the city. It was constructed around 500 years ago and is the oldest standing structure in the region .

If you like visiting off-beat landmarks, then make sure to stop by here and amble around. The fort itself is more on the humble side when it comes to extravagant architecture, but is worth visiting for its historic significance. The chhatris of Rao Bika, along with a few other emperors, are also situated at Bikaji Ki Tekri.

CG’s tip: If you find the front entrance to be closed or locked from inside, then simply knock and wait for the guard to show up. He will open the door and let you in.

How to get there: Bikaji Ki Tekri is located in Hammalon Ki Bari, close to Seth Bhandasar Jain Temple. The roads in this area are tiny so I would recommend visiting in an auto-rickshaw, two-wheeler or on foot. You can hire an auto-rickshaw for a few hours and club all the spots in the area together.

Opening times: 10 am – 6 pm

Best time to go: Bikaji Ki Tekri is not a majorly visited landmark in Bikaner, so you can go there anytime during the opening hours and have a majority of the place free of big crowds. If you are visiting the walled city area in the morning, then you can simply head here once it opens.

Map of the best Instagrammable Spots in Bikaner

To make your time in Bikaner even more convenient, I have also created a custom map containing all the best Bikaner photo points for you. This way you can club places that are closer in one outing and plan your trip more easily.

Just click on the bracket in the upper right corner and the map will automatically open in Google Maps on your device. You can leave it open to come back to it later or share with friends and family.

Top Things to do in Bikaner- A complete Travel guide

' src=

What is the first thing that pops in your mind when you think of Bikaner ? Is it Bikaneri Namkeen – Bhujia or the majestic Rampuria Haveli? The mouth- watering snack is irresistible, and pictures of the Haveli are splashed across every social media platform. But Bikaner is much more than just a famous snack or a photogenic building. Unlike the other cities of Rajasthan, it does not flaunt its forts and palaces; instead it has something unorthodox to offer.

Bikaner is one of the largest cities of Rajasthan but has been overlooked by many travellers in favour of its more illustrious neighbors Jaipur, Jodhpur & Jaisalmer.

Less popularity translates to fewer people visiting which is good if you want to enjoy Bikaner to its fullest.

How to reach Bikaner:

Bikaner is easily accessible from most of the major cities. Regular buses ply from Agra, Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur to Bikaner. The nearest airport to Bikaner is Jodhpur at 250 kms, a 5-hour drive. Alternatively, you can also drive down or board a bus from Jaipur to Bikaner. The roads are pretty good and pleasant for a road trip. We opted for a sleeper bus from Jaipur to Bikaner costing us 500 per head, an approx. 6-hour journey.

bikaner travel spot

Best time to visit Bikaner:

The ideal time to visit Bikaner would be from mid-October to Feb end. Just like any desert region, Bikaner gets hot during the summers with temperatures rising to a scorching 45 degrees during the day. We were in Bikaner back in Feb when the temperatures were much pleasant during the day and the mercury dropping to a chilly 8-10 degrees at night.

The city witnesses a tourist influx mainly during weekends, but I would suggest spending a couple more days to experience this beautiful place.

Touristy things to do in Bikaner in 2 days:

If you are determined to visit only for the weekend then consider seeing these must visit places first.

Junagarh Fort, Bikaner:

Unlike most other forts, Junagarh fort does not lie atop a mountain/ hilltop and yet this beautiful structure was never captured by an invading force. The city of Bikaner seemed to grow right around it.

Junagarh fort was constructed around the 16 th century during the reign of Raja Rai Singh and was initially named “Chintamani”. In the years to follow, when the royal family moved to the magnificent Lalgarh Palace, Chintamani Fort was renamed Junagarh meaning Old Fort.

The fort is one of the most beautiful and well-maintained forts of India. It houses numerous palaces, courtyards, two museums and many ancient artefacts and memorabilia.

top Things to do in Bikaner

Junagarh fort is adorned with beautiful mirror artwork, detailed archways, ornate corridors, jharokhas & impressive carved lattice screens. Every room in the fort exudes beauty and royalty.

Junagarh has some of the most Instagram worthy rooms; Badal Mahal, blue walls laced with hand painted clouds to resemble a cloudy sky & Anup Mahal, a red and gold highlighted hall meant for a private audience with the King.

Pick up an audio guide from the ticket counter to walk you through the history of this fort while you admire and gaze at this architectural beauty.

bikaner travel spot

Rampuria Haveli:

Also known as the pride of Bikaner, Rampuria haveli is a marvel to admire when in Bikaner. These are a group of havelis built by the wealthy merchant clans of Bikaner over a period of a few hundred years. The Havelis are made using  red  sandstone, one of the reasons it is known as the Red City. The beauty of the Havelis is simply stunning and elegant. Also, the corner of these building jutting out onto the street is one of the most popular pictures online today.

I suggest wandering by foot in the narrow lanes during the morning hours to avoid honking vehicles, and to capture the beauty around sunrise when the sun is peaking over from behind the tall structures of the haveli. The colourful houses and spice market in the adjoining area tell tales of the old Bikaner.

Temples of Bikaner:

Bikaner is undoubtedly a city of worshippers with opulent temples scattered all around the city. If you feel religious or merely wish to be an admirer of spell bounding architecture or you are a history buff, then here are some of the temples to visit:

Seth Bhandasar Jain temple :

Built in the 15 th century, Seth Bhandasar Jain temple is one of the oldest temples in Bikaner.

It is believed that the foundation of the temple was built using ghee mixed with mortar. The popular belief is that the dark patches along the floor and the walls of the temple is the ghee oozing out during the hot summers due to extreme temperatures. The temple is a wondrous amalgamation of white marble and red sandstone, ornated with intricate gold and mirror work. The wall arts, colourful paintings, carved windows, ornamented ceilings and archways spell opulent beauty. Take a parikrama (round) of the temple & chat with the Local Pandit (Priest) who is willing to share a piece of history.

Karni Mata Rat Temple :

A 30 km drive from the city, Karni Mata Temple is home to over 20,000 rats that are fed and worshipped. It is believed that if a rat eats the food you offer, it is considered auspicious. And if you spot a white rat amongst the thousands of other scurrying rats, consider yourself extremely lucky.  This temple is not for the faint hearted.

Shiv Bari temple, Shri Laxminath temple, Laxminath temple are some of the other temples to visit in Bikaner.

Palaces of Bikaner:

bikaner travel spot

Lalgarh Palace:

Built by the then Maharaja of Bikaner, Sri Ganga Singh, the palace was named in memory of his father Maharaja Lall Singh. The palace is a blend of Indian & British influences evident in the intricate artwork of this marvellous architectural building that has withstood time. The palace houses the Charitable Trust Shri Sadul Museum, the fourth largest private library in the world. The two other wings of this grand structure are converted into heritage hotels, Lalgarh Palace Hotel and Laxmi Niwas Palace Hotel.

Laxmi Niwas Palace:

A part of Lalgarh Palace, Laxmi Niwas palace is the ultimate luxury and heritage hotel to stay whilst in Bikaner. Carved with red sandstone, the palace is well maintained and usually hosts royal weddings and corporate events. The hospitality, the symmetry, the food and the feeling of royalty is beyond imagination. The tariffs of the rooms here are in excess of a whopping INR 30000. But you can always drop by for a drink or two or indulge in a royal thali at their inhouse restaurant without having to splurge on the room tariff. And do not forget to wander around the corridors and hotel grounds and enjoy the serenity of this lavish property.

bikaner travel spot

Gajner Palace :

Around 32 kms away from the city, Gajner Palace is a breath-taking place to spend your day. It is one of the most sought-after heritage hotels due its proximity to the Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary and the shores of Gajner Lake. Explore the flora and fauna and soak in the musical chirping of colourful birds. You can also take the safari tour and go wildlife spotting at the Sanctuary, unwinding at their gorgeous restaurant afterwards.

Places to eat in Bikaner:

Relish the royal thali at swarna mahal:.

Step back in time and experience royalty like no other at Swarna Mahal (housed inside Laxmi Niwas Heritage Hotel). Admire the Utsa art all around and the high teak panelled roof while the ambiance sweeps you off your feet. The food here is amazing and complements the stunning surroundings.

While we were here, the husband tried the delicious Lal Mass cooked in gulmohar flower; so succulent that the meat would just fall off the bones & flavoursome to say the least.

I indulged in the Royal Maharajas Thali that consisted of some creamy Kebabs, Ker Sangri, Lal Maas, Malai Murgh, Gatte ki Sabzi, Papad ki Sabzi, Daal-baati-Churma, Baajre ki Roti doused in Ghee and much more. And for dessert, I was served the Bikaner Rasgulla and Kheer – uber delicious.

This was the most memorable meal of our trip 😉

The Imperial Terrace :

An extension to The Mirage, the inhouse restaurant at Gajner Palace, overlooks the beautiful lake and sanctuary. Enjoy the sunset over the lake while sipping on a fancy drink. They also host folk and tribal dance performances for their guests throughout the evening.

Homemade Rajasthani meal at Rao Bikaji Safari Camp :

Meals at Rao Bikaji are homely and plain delicious. A perfect Rajasthani meal including Dal Baati, Gatte Ki Sabji, Ker Sangri & Gulab Jamun to end the meal on a sweet note. The food is prepared inhouse by the humble & ever courteous staff.

A multi cuisine restaurant right opposite Jungarh fort, Gallops is a popular place to eat in Bikaner. The restaurant is bustling with tourists; however, the food is quite average. I suggest opting for Indian food and trying the coffee.

Things to do in Bikaner Thewickedsoul

Prachina Cafe:

Situated inside the grounds of Junagarh Fort, the place is peaceful and does not have too many guests. The menu is limited and mostly offers quick bites and Indian cuisine. Though the food is ordinary, the Puri Bhaji was flavorful.

Bikaneri Sweets and Namkeen:

Do not miss out on sampling the world famous Bikaneri Bhujia, Ghevar and Rasgulla at Bikaneri Sweets. A trip to Bikaner is incomplete without picking a few snack packs while returning home.

Discover the best things to do and see in Bikaner India!

Bikaner is located in the north of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar desert in India. Colorful people, bustling markets, shrines, dusty roads with rickshaws, cars and motorbikes, mixed with many cows, oxen and goats: Bikaner impresses, fascinates and you can’t get enough of it. Because this city is often skipped by tourists, it is the perfect place to mingle with the locals and observe daily life. Bikaner is known for its special havelis, old merchant houses, bazaars, camels, miniature art and the beautiful Junagarh fort. In this article you’ll find everything you want to know about things to do and see in Bikaner India and its surroundings. Bikaner was the big surprise of Rajasthan for me!

Laxmi Niwas Palace – Lalgarh palace

Bikaner miniature art, gajner wildlife sanctuary bikaner, is bikaner safe, discover things to do and to see in bikaner india.

Bikaner was founded by Rajput Bikaji in the 15th century. He was the son of the founder of Jodhpur, and left the court, after a family fight, to establish his own city. The Empire of Bikaji ruled Bikaner for almost four and a half centuries. Even during the Mughal Empire , in the 16th century, the Rajputs remained power by working in high positions. Part of the former royal family still lives in the city today.

Bikaner was conveniently located on the caravan route (connecting Africa and west Asia to the far east) and has therefore always been an important trading city. The city is known for its fantastic camels, and the production of fabrics and carpets. Many Indian fashion brands come to Bikaner to buy their fabrics here.

Bikaner is not a city to stay in for days but it is a nice place to include in your itinerary, when traveling from Jaipur to Jaisalmer. Enjoy my tips for things to do and see in Bikaner India.

Explore the old city in Bikaner

One of the best things to do in Bikaner India, is to walk into the old city center and to immerse yourself in everyday life. Bikaner consisted of a seven kilometer long city wall with several entrance gates. The main gateway to the old center still remains and is called the Kote Gate, where you will also find many small shops. The center consists of a maze of streets and alleys, where you walk past bazaars, suddenly find yourself in an Islamic district and come across small temples and local workshops.

Things to see in Bikaner city center

There is so much to see in Bikaner old city center and take in. Men are playing cards on squares, ox carts with wood are passing by, goats are walking around and people are waving and trying to have a chat with you. You can stroll around bazaars, such as Bara Bazaar, Junagarh Fort Road, and Mahatma Gandhi Road Market and marvel at the countless spices, jewelry and fabrics. I walked around the center for hours and couldn’t get enough of it.

Tip: The center is easy to explore by foot or by rickshaw. You can also choose to go out with a local guide. This way you get to know the city really well and disappear in the countless alleys, without getting lost. You can also safely taste the delicious chai (Indian tea with countless spices and milk) and Bikaneri street foods that are sold everywhere on the street.

Fort Junargarh – top things to do in Bikaner

The Junagarh Fort is an absolute highlight and one of the most impressive things to see in Bikaner India. The gigantic fortress is located in the city and cannot be missed, because of its pink-red color and the kilometer-long wall that surrounds the complex.

Inside you will find 37 palaces that are connected by courtyards and corridors. Bikaner is known for its miniature art, something that can be seen in the countless painted walls and tiles. The fort is also called an example of Rajput art. Everywhere you look, you will find beautiful decorations and details. On the balconies, towers, at the stairs, doorways and windows. You will be surprised over and over again.

The fort was built in the 16th century by Raja Rai Singh, the sixth Rajput leader of Bikaner. In the years that followed, it was expanded by different leaders who each left their own mark. It is one of the few fortresses that was not built on a hill, but never conquered, despite many attacks. Because Bikaner attracts few foreign tourists and is less visited than other forts in Rajasthan, you mainly walk among Indian visitors.

Do you want to lean more about Junargarh fort during your visit? This is an interesting tour.

Seth Bhandasar Jain Temple

A temple that does not look very special from the outside, will amaze you at the inside by the overwhelming use of colors and artwork. Seth Bhandasar Jain temple was built in the 15th century and dedicated to a Tirthankar, a Jain teacher. The temple is known for its incredible leaf paintings, frescoes and ornamented mirror work, depicting the lives of 24 Jain teachers. The decorations are just impressive and makes it one of the most stunning temples and things to see in Bikaner India.

Jainism   is India’s sixth-largest-religion and is practiced throughout India. Because this religion has no gods, it is actually more a philosophy of life. Jainism honors everything that lives. Jainas are vegan and do not wear leather items. In addition, they argue for a fair and nonviolent existence, in which matters do not play a role. Gandhi seems to have been influenced by Jainism in his early years. Two of the most famous Jain temples are located in Ranakpur and Jaisalmer

The Lalgarh palace, is coated in red sandstone and also known as the red fort. It is located north of Bikaner and consists of several buildings, set around large gardens. It is a beautiful complex and one of the best best things to do in Bikaner India, if you want to unwind from the busy center. The palace was built in the late 19th century by the maharaja family. The English designer Samuel Swinton Jacob , who was also responsible for the Albert Hall in Jaipur , was asked to design the palace.

One of the palaces has been set up as a museum, where you will learn more about the Maharaja family who lived here. Another part of the palace is still inhabited by part of the family. And yet another building is transformed into a luxury hotel. In the courtyard of the Laxmi Niwas Palace, you can enjoy the most delicious dishes and the special atmosphere of the palace. Make sure to try the thali, with numerous small Indian snacks and breads and have a stroll through the gardens that surround the palaces.

Cultural things to do in Bikaner

Haveli s – best things to do in bikaner.

One of the best things to do when you go sightseeing in Bikaner India is to visit the havelis. Havelis are traditional merchant houses and protected heritage. In many Indian cities these houses are transformed into a luxury hotel, restaurant or museum, but in Bikaner you will also find them in their original state. You might have to search a bit, but once you’ve found one, you will be surprised about its beauty. Bikaner is home to some of Rajasthan’s most beautiful havelis, and there are almost no tourists around.

Rampuriya Haveli, from the 15th century, is one of the most famous Havelis. I couldn’t stop taking pictures. Most of the havelis are on Heritage rd and are best reached by foot or by rickshaw from Kote Gate.

Bikaner is known for its miniature art and you can still see artists at work. One of the most renowned sites and best things to see in Bikaner in terms of art is Bikaner Miniature art . A famous family run business that has even received a spot in the Guinness World Book of Records, for creating the smallest painting in the world. In the Bikaner Miniature art center, you can admire various works, receive explanations about the process and even attend workshops. Of course you can also buy pieces of art here, but walking around alone is already worth it. Keep in mind that rickshaw drivers get a commission on your purchase, if they drop you off here.

Things to see and do in Bikaner India surroundings

Visit the royal tombs of devi kund.

On the outskirts of Bikaner, along a large reservoir, you will find the former cremation sites of the Bikaji dynasty royal family.  Devi Kund Sagar, consists of several cenotaphs or chhatris (domed pavilions), made of marble with beautiful ornaments. You can walk around and marvel at the stunning decorations.

The complex consists of two groups of cenotaphs, from the 5th and 16th centuries, which are built in memory of kings, queens and members of the royal Bikaner family. The highlight is the cenotaph of Maharaja Anup Singh. Built on 16 pillars, this cenotaph contains spectacular carvings and Rajput paintings, depicting Krishna, floral motifs, birds, peacocks and animals. Devi Kund Sagar is a great place to take pictures and one of things to see in Bikaner that should not be missed. A rickshaw will take you from the center to the entrance within 20 minutes.

The Rat temple – unique things to do in Bikaner

30 kilometers from Bikaner you will find one of the most bizarre places in Rajasthan: The Karni Mata temple or the Rat Temple of Deshnok. In this temple, there are more than 250,000 rats (yes really!) and as a visitor you just walk around them. The temple is dedicated to Karni Mata, a 15th century woman with extraordinary powers. She was believed to be an incarnation of goddess Durga, and able to bring people back to earth like rats. The rats are sacred and believed to be reincarnations of humans who had been devotees of Karni Mata. People come from all over to pay tribute to Karni Mata and the sacred creatures. There are trays with milk and grain everywhere and the rats are running around you in large numbers.

Want to visit the Karrni Mata temple? This is a tour from Bikaner to Jodhpur, including a stop at the temple.

A visit is a unique experience, not only because of the rats but also because of the faith and dedication of the people that goes with it. Do you want to know more about this temple? Read more about my visit to the Karni Mata rat temple in Deshnok.

The farm is said to breed the best camels in the world. Camels have always played an important role in Rajasthan history. Every year in January the International Camel Festival takes place in Bikaner. The festival is held to honor the camels, also known as the “Ship of the Desert”. Camel races, camel dances and long parades take place where artists from all over the country decorate the camels in a traditional way.

Enjoy a camel safari

Bikaner is a perfect base for a camel safari through the fascinating sand dunes of the Thar desert. It is best to take a trip during sunrise or sunset. Then the temperatures are the most pleasant and the light is the most beautiful.

There are day trips but also multi-day trips, where you spend the night in tent camps and visit small desert villages such as Khichan, Balakaya, Raisar and Dhora. Highly recommended and one of the best things to do, if you want to see more of the surroundings in Bikaner India. If you don’t want to make a camel trip, you can also choose to go out with jeeps. Most tours are tailor-made, from basic to luxurious safari experiences. These are some tours.

Do you want to leave busy Bikaner behind and dive into nature? 32 kilometers outside Bikaner is the Gajner Palace , the former hunting lodge of the Maharaja family from 1784. The palace is located on a beautiful lake and is part of a nature reserve, the Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a unique area in the dry desert environment. Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the deer, antelope, black bucks, Indian bulls, wild boars, desert foxes and numerous migratory birds. You can go for lovely walks, take beautiful pictures and learn more about the local flora and fauna, led by local guides. You will be spending the night in a unique Rajasthani palace, in original palace rooms. The service and the rooms are simple but well taken care of. The accompanying bar and coffee shop are also a worth visting, because of the many authentic attributes. In the shop you will find beautiful traditional jewelry.
  • A nice and beautiful haveli to spend the night is Harasar Haveli , located in a slightly quieter area. You can also book a stay with a local family in the countryside through this Haveli. A nice experience and recommended if you have more time.
  • Gajner Palace , located in Gajner, is a beautiful palace to spend the night, if you are looking for a bit more peace. Besides that it is the perfect place to go sightseeing in Bikaner Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary.

Restaurants in Bikaner

  • One of Bikaner’s best restaurants is Gallops , located at the Junagarh Fort. Here you will find amazing Indian dishes in a simple yet neat setting. Don’t forget to try the gatte ka sabzi en dal bati churma , traditional Rajasthani dishes.
  • Laxmi Niwas Palace is a must-visit if you want to have lunch or dinner in style, in a beautiful courtyard of a palace.
  • In Harasar Haveli you can enjoy delicious Indian dishes in a pieceful setting.

Bikaner can be overwhelming in many ways. As a European woman walking around alone, you definitely will get a lot of attention. Still, I haven’t felt unsafe in any way. People are very helpful, friendly and less pushy than in other places in India. Just watch out for the many oxen and cows that walk the street. Keep a proper distance. Always be well informed at the hotel about the current security situation. In the evening, it is best to travel by rickshaw.

Things to do in Bikaner – Travel Guide for the Red City of Rajasthan

by Drifter Planet | Sep 17, 2017 | India

Rampuria Haveli - Bikaner - the Red City of Rajasthan

“Oh Bikaner, why have you been hiding all this time? Did you get overshadowed by too many famous siblings?”

A few months back if you had asked me about Rajasthan, I would have mentioned places like Jaisalmer , Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur or Pushkar . However at this point, Bikaner tops my list for places to visit in Rajasthan and this post will tell you why.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when someone says Bikaner?

I bet it’s either Namkeen , or sweets, or the famous rat temple. Blame it on Bikaji namkeen wala ( the largest Bhujia manufacturer in the world), or Bikaner Mithai wala (one of the most famous mithai shops), or the shock factor associated with the rat temple, but people don’t think beyond these three things when someone talks about this city.

Well, these are the same things that people mentioned I told them that I was visiting Bikaner and I arrived here with these same images on my mind. Little did I know that I was about to get blown away by the Bikaner’s art, culture, architecture, palaces and the royal life.

It’s a good thing that Bikaner sometimes gets ignored because it has still managed to retain its quaint and offbeat charm. What’s even better is that a visit to Bikaner gave me a stronger flavor of Rajasthan’s Royal life , as compared to its siblings.

In case you’ve been crushing on my Instagram pictures from Bikaner ( #SonalinBikaner ), I’m going to do you a favor and NOT let my experiences remain a secret. Now that I have sold the Red city as a travel destination to you, let me share exactly what you can do here when you visit.

Things to do in Bikaner, Rajasthan

1) admire junagarh fort’s magnificent interiors.

bikaner travel spot

Visiting Junagarh Fort is one of the most obvious things to do in Bikaner and honestly, I was not really interested in it. I had already seen this fort from the outside and I expected it to be like many other forts in India that I have already seen already.

My last day in Bikaner was excessively hot and someone suggested it was the perfect opportunity to visit Junagarh Fort because I will mostly be indoors. With little or no expectations, I arrived here with my friend Deepti and our jaws literally dropped as we explored this palace.

Colorful mirrored passage in Junagarh Fort, Bikaner

Junagarh Fort has got to be one of the best-maintained palaces that I have seen from the inside. There are themed areas – white, blue, red, gold colorful and what not. Bikaner’s ruler – Raja Rai Singh, built it in the 15 th century and each generation from then added a section to this fort.

My favorite part here was a section called Badal Mahal, which was blue from the inside. It was designed to depict rain for royal children because it hardly ever rained in Bikaner.

2) Visit the Camel Farm and See Baby Camels

A baby camel with mother in Bikaner's Camel Breeding Farm

A baby camel with mother in Bikaner’s Camel Breeding Farm

If you think camels are cute, wait till you see baby camels. The National Research Centre on Camel is India’s only camel breeding farm. I had only seen brown camels but here I saw black and white ones too!

The best time to visit this place is from 3 pm to 4 pm because that’s when a massive number of camels return back to the farm. You can opt for a camel ride or even buy things that are made out of camel milk.

I tried camel milk kulfi (Kulfi is Indian ice cream), which was a little too heavy for me.

3) Explore Bikaner’s Old Town on “Merchant’s trail”

Exploring Bikaner's Old Town - things to do in Bikaner

Exploring Bikaner’s Old Town – things to do in Bikaner

Exploring Bikaner’s old town was one of the best things that I did here. This part of the city is the reason why Bikaner is the Red City of Rajasthan because most of it is built using red sandstones.

The Merchant’s trail starts at Rampuria Haveli and takes you around Bikaner’s old town, Jain temple and you will get to witness some of the most interesting sights.

While I was in Bikaner, I explored this area twice – one on a horse carriage and the other on foot. I’d personally recommend you explore by walking too because the streets tend to get crowded.

4) Check out Rampuria Haveli – the pride of Bikaner

Rampuria Haveli - the pride of Bikaner, Rajasthan

Rampuria Haveli – the pride of Bikaner, Rajasthan

Rampuria Haveli is what Eiffel Tower is for Paris or the Empire State Building for the New York City. Often called “the pride of Bikaner”, Rampuria Haveli proudly stands in the middle of the old town.  This majestic haveli was constructed in the 15th century for Balujee Chalva.

If you do the Merchant’s trail, you will start at Rampuria Haveli. This Haveli is the highlight of this area and deserves a separate mention.

Honestly, this Haveli is unlike any other that I have seen in India because of a very strong influence of Victorian architecture. It looks like someone has plucked it out of an old school British movie and dropped it here.

Rampuria Haveli under the moonlight by Deepti Asthana

Rampuria Haveli under the moonlight – photo by my friend by Deepti Asthana

My fascination with Bikaner’s Rampuria haveli led to some research and here’s what I have discovered. The Havelis in this part of the city were built many years ago by the noble families and merchants of Bikaner. Back in those days, Bikaner emerged as a business hub because it was on the trade route between Central and Western Asia.

If you’d like to photograph this epic landmark of Bikaner, then I’d suggest you visit this place at sunrise because it ends up being extremely crowded after that.

5) Eat a Royal Rajisthani Meal in Narendra Bhawan

Mutton Kebabs in P&C - Narendra Bhawan's in house restaurant

Not only is  Narendra Bhawan   the best place to stay in Bikaner, but also is one of the most amazing places to experience a royal Rajasthani meal. This place was once the residence of Bikaner’s last Maharaja – Narendra Singh and the meals here have been designed keeping his memory in mind.

Experience the Royal Life at Narendra Bhawan in Bikaner

Head to Narendra Bhawan for a Royal Rajasthani Meal in Bikaner

You can opt for a highly luxurious “museum dinner” that is served in the most exclusive and intricately designed dinner hall in Narendra Bhawan. For something simpler, you can head to the in-house restaurant – P&C and try Rajisthani maas curry.

For a simple and traditional meal, try the Bikaneri Crescent thali, which has a variety of veggie and meat curries with rice and roti. Don’t miss out Mad Hatter bakery’s heavenly desserts while you’re there.

6) Check Out the Miniature Art Studio

the Miniature Art Studio by the Swami family in Bikaner

the Miniature Art Studio by the Swami family in Bikaner

Rajasthan is famous for miniature paintings, a trend, which has supposedly started from Bikaner. Palaces like Junagarh fort, Laxmi Niwas and Lalgarh had rooms with intricate art patterns on walls and ceilings.

We couldn’t get enough of it so our guide took us to a very cool miniature art studio , just outside the Junagarh Fort. It also functions as an art school and is run by the Swami family . Not only you can buy this artwork at surprisingly low prices but also watch the artists create it.

Inside Bikaner's Miniature Art Studio

Inside Bikaner’s Miniature Art Studio

This studio has around 4 – 5 small rooms where miniature artwork is displayed as per themes. There are birds, animals, people, scenes from Bikaner’s history, Hindu Gods and more – mostly drawn by Shiv Swami and Rajan Swami.

During our visit there, the artists also created miniature artwork on our nails. It was extremely detailed for its tiny size. They have also created a record in the Guinness world of record back in 2002 & 2003 for creating world’s smallest painting which is 5 X 3.5 cms and has 1220 leaves, 20 animals, 30 birds, 70 flowers and 20 aquatic animals. They don’t hold this record anymore.

7) Try Bikaner’s Famous Namkeen – Bikaji ki Bhujia

Bikaneri Bhujia inside Bikaji Namkeen Factory in Bikaner

Bikaneri Bhujia inside Bikaji Namkeen Factory in Bikaner

If you’re not from India, you probably don’t know what namkeen is. Namkeen in Hindi simply means salty and this word is also used while referring to salty Indian snacks. Namkeens are an important part of Indian culture. Bikaner’s namkeen – especially Bhujia is famous all over India for its taste. You should not only try it for yourself but should consider buying it as a gift for your friends too.

While I was in Bikaner, I got a chance to visit Bikaji Namkeen Factory and I carried back a namkeen hamper for my family. My family obviously loved it. 🙂

8) Visit Bhandasar Jain Temple and Admire the Mirror work

Stunning frescos inside Bhandasar Jain Temple in Bikaner

Stunning frescos inside Bhandasar Jain Temple in Bikaner

Bhandasar Jain Temple is in Bikaner’s old town and is surprisingly beautiful from the inside. This Jain temple is tiny and is decorated with intricate mirror work that has a hypnotic effect. There are many bright frescos on the walls and the ceiling that depict the lives of the Jain teachers.

The insides were refreshingly cool because of the white marble. Strangely the foundations of this temple have been made using ghee (clarified butter).

Bhandasar Jain Temple was built in the 15 th century and is one of the oldest buildings of Bikaner.

9) Explore Devi Kund Sagar – the Royal Crematorium

Cenotaphs in Devi Kund Sagar, Bikaner

Cenotaphs in Devi Kund Sagar, Bikaner

Visiting a crematorium may not be very high on anyone’s list but Bikaner’s Devi Kund Sagar is surely unique. It is an amazing place where you can admire architectural summitry.

The entry fee is just 5 rupees and you need to remove your shoes before stepping in. You can pick up a pair of disposable shoes at the entry area and wear it while exploring Devi Kund Sagar.

Stunning Symmetry of Cenotaphs in Devi Kund Sagar, Bikaner, Rajasthan

Stunning Symmetry of Cenotaphs in Devi Kund Sagar, Bikaner, Rajasthan

Inside the complex, you will find tombs of deceased members of Bikaji dynasty with “chhatris” around them. “Chhatri” is a Hindi word that means umbrella, used here to describe the shape of these cenotaphs. At first, these chhatris appeared to be the same but we soon noticed a pattern where the ones for women had footsteps printed outside.

10) Visit Lalgarh Palace and Shri Sadul Museum

Lalgarh  is one of the newer palaces of Bikaner and was also made using red sandstones for Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner. It is a three-story complex, which represents a mix of British as well as Architectural, style and is stretched across sprawling lawns.

It is now owned and run by his daughter Princess Leia.. oops I mean Princess Rajyashree Kumari.

Shri Sadul Museum is inside Lalgarh Palace, right after at the entry point. This museum displays several artifacts from Maharaja Sir Ganga Singh’s and his children’s lives.

The main building of Lalgarh Palace functions as a luxury heritage hotel. There are many lounges, an indoor swimming pool, a massive dining hall, guest suites, and most of it is covered with intricate artwork. You can either stay here or visit for a meal at Ranbanka Cafe and check out this palace from inside. Or you can simply visit Sri Sadul Museum.

11) Get a Taste of Bikaner’s Ultimate Luxury at Laxmi Niwas Palace

Deepti and I enjoying our Royal dinner at Laxmi Niwas Palace, Bikaner

Laxmi Niwas Palace  was once Maharaja Ganga Singh’s residential palace but is now a luxury hotel. Although this palace is smaller than Lalgarh, it is much more beautiful from inside.

Pool area - Laxmi Niwas Palace, Bikaner

My favorite thing about Rajasthani palaces is that they are built like havelis , with an open courtyard in the middle of the building. If you stand exactly in the center of Laxmi Niwas Palace’s courtyard, the symmetry all around will amaze you.

Laxmi Niwas Palace, Bikaner, Rajasthan

Along the courtyard, you will find conference rooms, a billiard room, guest suites, a highly luxurious dining hall, a restaurant and a path that goes outside to the swimming pool area.

I was here on several occasions on one of them; I got to check out the king and queen suites with an impressive view. If you want to experience the ultimate luxury of Bikaner, then you should stay in this hotel. If not, then at least try a meal in their restaurant where the head chef creates magic with meat kebabs and curries.

12) Spend Half a Day at Gajner Palace and Sanctuary

Gajner Lakeside Palace near Bikaner, Rajasthan

Gajner Lakeside Palace near Bikaner, Rajasthan

Yes, this is the fourth palace on this list but hey – Bikaner is the perfect place to experience Rajasthan’s royal life. Unlike the other places on this list,  Gajner Palace   is outside Bikaner.

Gajner Sancuary near Bikaner

Gajner Sancuary near Bikaner

It will take you approximately one hour to reaching Gajner Palace from the main Bikaner city but it is totally worth the effort. Plan your visit in such a way so that you can witness the sunset next to the lake with a few drinks and dinner. If you have more time, then try to go for a jeep safari to explore the adjoining Gajner sanctuary, which is beyond the lake.

13) Go Visit the Sand Dunes

Little Sand Dunes just outside Bikaner, Rajasthan

Little Sand Dunes just outside Bikaner, Rajasthan

Jaisalmer is one of the most popular travel destinations in Rajasthan for visiting the sand dunes, but not many people know that you can see them in Bikaner too. These sand dunes are a little outside the city and are not far from the Camel Research Centre (point 2), so you can do both these things together.

Chilling on the Sand Dunes in Bikaner, Rajasthan - little planet perspective

Chilling on the Sand Dunes in Bikaner, Rajasthan – little planet perspective

I will be honest with you – the Khuri Sand Dunes and Sam Sand Dunes near Jaisalmer are surely bigger. However, the smaller dunes in Bikaner also have a lot to offer and visiting them around sunset was an amazing experience.

14) Go to Bikaji Ki Tekri

Bikaji ki tekri - Bikaner, Rajasthan

Bikaji ki tekri – Bikaner, Rajasthan

Just like Devi Kund Sagar, Bikaji ki Tekri also has “chhatris” shaped cenotaphs but that’s where the similarity ends. Bikaner was created in 1488 by Rao Bikaji and Bikaji Ki Tekari is a tribute to him and his immediate successors. Rao Bikaji’s cenotaph was made with marble and the others were made using red sandstones.

In my opinion, there was something gloomy about this place. It was sad to see that the site that pays homage to the creator of the Bikaner city was not well maintained.

Moreover, this site also has inscription of medieval Indian social practice – Sati – which was performed here for two wives of Sri Rao Bikaji. Yes, this makes me shudder! If you don’t know what “Sati” is – then maybe it is a good thing.

If you want to visit Bikaji ki Tekri, you need to make advance arrangements and inform the guards of this place.

How to Reach Bikaner, Rajasthan

The easiest way to reach Bikaner is by train. You can do the train journey overnight from Delhi (or Gurgaon) on train number 12457 – Bikaner SuperFast Express and reach Bikaner early morning. This is the smartest and the most affordable way to reach Bikaner from North India.

Alternatively, you can also drive to Bikaner from Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and, Punjab. The condition of the road beyond Jaipur is pretty good. Another way of reaching Bikaner is by flying to the nearby Jodhpur (4-5 hours away) or Jaipur (6-7 hours away).

Weather in Bikaner and When to visit

The best time to visit Bikaner is from October to February. Rajasthan is extremely hot during the summer months and the temperature can go as high as 45 degrees. Winter months are pleasant but it can get surprisingly cold at night. I visited in April and it was very hot but thankfully I spent the hottest hours of the day indoors.

Where to Stay in Bikaner

One of the best ways to experience Bikaner is by staying in a haveli or a palace that was once the royal residence. The options are many and surprisingly are not expensive for the kind of luxury that they offer. Here are the places that I suggest you check out for staying in Bikaner –

Narendra Bhawan

Narendra Bhawan is one of the most newly renovated heritage hotels in Bikaner and it was once the grand residence of ex Maharaja of Bikaner. The interiors are extremely luxurious and vibrant in a style that’s ultra modern yet Maharaja-like.

Narendra Bhawan is the place where I stayed while I was in Bikaner. I ate several meals in the restaurant here and each was extremely delicious and memorable. The rooftop pool here is the perfect place to cool off from Bikaner’s heat in the evenings. They also offer several curated experiences to explore Bikaner like a Maharaja.

Read reviews on TripAdvisor

Average price per night : $110 – $260 per night depending on the room and season.

Laxmi Niwas Palace

Laxmi Niwas Palace is much bigger as compared to Narendra Bhawan. There is not much difference in price if you compare both these hotels but the smaller Narendra Bhawan is more luxurious. Personally, I prefer Narendra Bhawan’s rooms and interiors more.

Average price per night: $115 – $230 per night depending on the room and season.

Lalgarh Palace

If you want to stay in the largest palace of Bikaner then you should book a room at Lalgarh. This palace hotel features an indoor swimming pool, massive lawns, an elaborate dining hall and more.

Average price per night: $102 – $230 per night depending on the room and season.

Gajner Palace Heritage Hotel

Gajner Palace isn’t inside Bikaner but is 30 km away. If you’re looking to get away from the main city then you’re going to love this place. Gajner Palace is next to a lake so you can be sure of spending amazing evenings next to it enjoying the sunset. This lakeside palace hotel is the perfect place for destination weddings and honeymoons.

Average price per night: $120 per night depending on the room and season.

Yes, it is, but book a nice place to stay with AC because the heat can be unbearable. Also, plan your day in a way that you do a bit of sightseeing early morning and take it easy during the hot part of the day.

In Bikaner, Land Sinks 80-100 Feet Overnight; Authorities Scramble For Answers

Local News Desk

Delhi, India

This incident took place in Bikaner's Sahagrasar village of Lunkaransar.

This incident took place in Bikaner's Sahagrasar village of Lunkaransar.

Geologists have reached the spot and are investigating the entire matter.

A shocking case has come to light in Lunkaransar in Bikaner district, after which the people of the area are in panic. According to reports, when the people here woke up in the morning on April 16, they saw that the land of a farm in the village had sunk by about 80 to 100 feet.

This incident took place in Sahagrasar village, Lunkaransar, in Bikaner district. A farmer saw this incident first after he reached his field. He witnessed that about one and a half acres of land on his farm had sunk inside. The surrounding trees and the road all got engulfed in this pit. After this, he informed the people around him about this, and everyone reached the spot.

On receiving information about the incident, arrests were made against many officials, including the police administration.

Generally, incidents of land subsidence occur only in areas with mines. But this incident took place on a farm which was quite surprising for the local people, as there are no mines in this area. The people here earn their living only by farming.

At present, there is an atmosphere of fear among the people in this area due to land subsidence. Only after an investigation into this matter of land subsidence will it be known how the land suddenly sank.

While many people are speculating that there was a well here, it sank. So, now, as per the latest information that has been received, the pit on this land is getting deeper. Geologists have reached the spot and are investigating the entire matter.

Meanwhile, the video of that area is currently going viral on social media. After knowing about the area, many people from the locality started reaching out and making videos of this pit and started posting them on social media. There are reports that a youth fell into this deep pit while making reels on social media.

After this, the police took action and registered an FIR against the youth. The police administration also imposed Section 144 in this area. Besides, fencing has also been done around here for the safety of the local people.

Shorely they can’t be serious.

Travel & Leisure released its list of the “25 Best Beaches in the USA.” Although two unlikely New York City entries made the cut, the coastal gem of Long Island — constantly in the conversation of the nation’s nicest beaches — was snubbed.

Brooklyn’s Coney Island and Rockaway Beach in Queens were awarded the same prestige as Hawaii’s Poipu Beach on Kauai and California’s Santa Monica Beach and Carmel-by-the-Sea, to name a few.

The crowded NYC spots were praised for their miles of boardwalk and plenty of sandy entertainment options.

Coney Island is described as “a perfect seaside wonderland of nostalgia and kitschy fun” — and the New York Aquarium is near the beach.

Known for its amusement parks, games, plus the one-of-a-kind Cyclone roller coaster, Travel & Leisure said it is also the little things like access to volleyball and basketball courts that make Coney Island and Rockaway stand out.

City dwellers should rejoice in knowing how close they are to some of the nation's best beaches.

Although not mentioned in the rating, it’s hard to have a bad day on Coney Island after a visit to the original Nathan’s Famous on nearby Stillwell Avenue, despite out-the-door lines.

Also, catching a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game at the boardwalk’s Maimonides Park to cheer on the New York Mets’ future prospects is almost always a blast — especially when fans experience a stunning sunset with views over the Atlantic Ocean and Luna Park from their seats.

The ballpark even made its way into the video game “Spider-Man 2” as a true NYC icon.

Coney Island also attracts many baseball fans off the beach with the Brooklyn Cyclones.

Geographically close by in Queens, the Ramones’ favorite Rock-Rock-Rockaway Beach has also enjoyed a major facelift in recent seasons. Its 1932 art deco Jacob Riis bathhouse underwent a $50 million renovation in late 2022.

The scene also changed greatly in the past few summers as it became a hub for vintage shops, food trucks and trendy bars.

In 2020, the south Queens surf haven also became posh thanks to the opening of its swanky Rockaway Hotel and pool .

Rockaway Beach has become a trendy NYC summer spot recently.

It’s nothing against either evolving city institution, but one must wonder why Coopers Beach in South Hampton on LI was not mentioned. It is often in other listings of the nation’s top 10, placing third in the US last year in Dr. Beach’s annual ranking.

The public Fire Island National Seashore, beloved by Long Islanders and city visitors alike for its deer-filled, beachside trail to the Fire Island Lighthouse from Robert Moses Field 5, also did not make the cut.

However, there was room for Park Point Beach in Duluth, Minnesota.

The Rockaways have become a trendy destination for New Yorkers.

In Connecticut, Ocean Beach Park in New London also made the cut, whereas Rhode Island’s Watch Hill — home to Taylor Swift’s oceanfront mega-mansion and many more nautical sights — is just a stone’s throw up I-95.

Also in New England, Good Harbor Beach near the setting of “The Perfect Storm” in Gloucester, Massachusetts, was selected over any Cape Cod destination — or Martha’s Vineyard.

In New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen’s home nabe of Asbury Park , which still carries a rock legacy with clubs like the Stone Pony plus other beachy fun, also made the list, as did Ocean City, Maryland.

Heavy Rains Hit Southern China as Hong Kong Spots a Waterspout

Bad weather in Guangdong Province forced evacuations as forecasters warned of more rain and potential flooding.

A tornado over water, near small islands.

By Zixu Wang and Yan Zhuang

Zixu Wang reported from Hong Kong, and Yan Zhuang from Seoul

Torrential rain battered southern China on Sunday, causing flooding and forcing tens of thousands of evacuations in the country’s most populous province, as a waterspout appeared briefly in Hong Kong and forecasters warned of potentially severe flooding.

Rain has been falling in Guangdong, which has a population of about 127 million, since last week. It intensified over the weekend, hammering the north of the province and the Pearl River Delta in the south, which includes Guangdong’s capital, Guangzhou, as well as the cities of Hong Kong and Macau.

The city of Yingde, in Guangdong’s north, received nearly a foot of rain from Friday to Sunday, the state-owned newspaper China Daily reported on Sunday . Nearly 20,000 people were evacuated and nine rivers were at risk of overflowing, it said.

In Guangzhou, the Longxue neighborhood received nearly five inches of rain over four hours on Sunday morning, the highest amount in the province.

The Beijiang River, a tributary of the Pearl River, flooded on Saturday night, China’s Ministry of Water Resources said on Sunday. As the downpour continued, the river faced a risk of an “exceptionally large” flood through Monday, the ministry said.

And in Hong Kong, a Chinese territory south of Guangdong, a waterspout was sighted over water by the local meteorological agency on Sunday morning. Waterspouts are whirling columns of air and water mist that form when cold air moves over warmer water, drawing up moisture.

There were no reports of the waterspout’s causing damage, and a rainstorm warning for the city was canceled at 2 p.m. But forecasters warned of violent winds and possible flooding.

Heavy rain was also affecting parts of the neighboring Chinese provinces of Guangxi, Jiangxi and Fujian on Sunday.

The heaviest rain was forecast to shift from the north to the east of Guangdong on Monday, and some areas could receive up to 10 inches of rain over 24 hours, according to the China Weather Network, an arm of the country’s meteorological authority. The rainfall was expected to begin easing on Tuesday.

Thunderstorms and sometimes heavy showers were also forecast for Hong Kong on Monday.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.
