Spanning the Cher River with its unique architectural bridge-like design, Chenonceau is known as the "ladies' castle." It stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of women throughout history, shaped and preserved by powerful female figures across the centuries. Beyond its architectural and historical significance, Chenonceau played a crucial role in World War II, serving as a strategic crossing point into the free zone. The Menier family, the castle's owners at the time, courageously aided people fleeing Nazi tyranny, smuggling them to safety across the river. 3 Regions In France Perfect For A Cycling Wine Tour

bike tours france wine country

 • Activities and Interests
 • Destinations
 • Food and Drink
 • Outdoor Activities
 • Wine Regions
 • Wine Tasting

The Tour de France developed naturally in a country with landscapes that are a paradise for cyclists. Small roads with little traffic wander through an extremely wide variety of countryside. This countryside becomes “terroir” when it is in wine country, and in France, some of the best riding is through these wonderful vineyards. The combined passions of cycling and wine become “velo et vigne” in French, and are wonderful combined activities. Cycling through the countryside in the beginning of the day provides the time and pace to observe, to get to know the terroir in its exposure, color, heat, and soil, so that later in the evening, seated in front of the menu, there is a reason for choices, an appreciation of the sunlight and soil, and its possible influence on the wine in your hand.

The riding provides the connection and an appetite to enjoy the French culinary and wine excellence and diversity. There are a lifetime of choices in France for this activity. It is a rare area in France that does not have vineyards. Here I will share highlights of experiences and information from three exceptional regions: Burgundy, the Loire, and la Côte Vermeille (the Vermilion coast).

Grapes grow in rows in the fields of Burgundy and town buildings.

1. Burgundy

This Is a land of wine legend arcing from the famous white wines of Chablis then south past Dijon, through the famous wine city of Beaune, on to Macon, and finally stretching further south through the Beaujolais nearly to Lyon. The area has many opportunities for cycling, with wonderful combinations of flat lands with rolling hillsides, all covered in vineyards, bordered by ancient stone walls, with hilltops covered in monk caps of forests.

Cycling in the morning will allow an understanding of the complexity of the wines as you pass through domains of diverse soils and changing exposure to the sun, sliced by ravines that channel winds that influence the grapes, and therefore the wines. The geographical features and weather elements that we ride through help explain and add appreciation to the wide diversity of wines and wine quality, from just a few grape varieties (mostly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with some Aligoté, and Gamay in the Beaujolais).

In spite of its fame, Burgundy has a simple, rustic, and authentic feel. Excellent winemaking is in the bones and the blood of the people and the place. There is no need to show off with fancy chateaus, just solid stone, centuries-old structures. Make sure to visit Beaune, one of the wine centers of the world. In Beaune, your choice of restaurants is excellent, and mealtime can take up much of the day. Each of the neighboring towns will have at least one excellent auberge , or inn, and often more to choose from, and each is proud of its own distinctive wines. For a good appreciation and comparison of the wines of Burgundy, a wine tasting at the Patriarche in Beaune is an unforgettable experience.

Pro Tip: The cycle route from Beaune to Santenay is a magnificent ride on a paved cycle track bordered by stone walls draped with rose bushes. This is terroir for distinctive and complex white wines from chardonnay grapes that are among the best in the world (Montrachet, Meursault) and red wines of Pinot Noir (Monthelie, Volnay, Pommard) that are known for elegance and finesse.

Chateau de Chinon in the Loire Valley, France. UNESCO world heritage site.

2. The Loire Valley

For a highlight adventure in the Loire valley, I would advise starting where Joan of Arc started: in Chinon . This is the very center of the Loire. East you have the wonderful vineyards and white wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé and west you will end on the Atlantic coast at Nante with aromatic Muscadet, a perfect match for the shrimps, oysters, and mussels of the Brittany sea coast. In Chinon, you will have a choice of wonderful riding and restaurants, with the very impressive fortress high on the ridge above. The cycling is relatively flat through vineyards of mostly Cabernet Franc, the local red wine. You can also leave the river and pedal up adjacent hillsides.

A special ride is from the Loire river up to Sancerre, with views of the vineyards and valleys below and excellent restaurants and an exceptional white wine to choose from. The pace of cycling will again reward you at least twice, as you get a real impression of these diverse terroirs and as you develop the appetite for evening appreciation of the vineyards that you have ridden through. The Loire is, of course, a concentration of magnificent chateaus that can be linked by bicycle. The choices are extensive, so consider our suggestions for 7 Historic Chateaus In The Loire Valley Where You Can Spend The Night .

Pro Tip: The full cycle route of the Loire valley is well worth doing for those who have the time.

Panorama of Port-Vendres on a summer day, in the Pyrénées-Orientales in Catalonia, France.

3. La Côte Vermeille (The Vermilion Coast)

This is a pocket, a golden triangle of a small collection of towns, tucked against Catalonian Spain, at the meeting point of the Mediterranean and the steeply rising Pyrenees mountains. This region deserves more depth of description than the previous regions as it is an area less known to travelers outside of France. The small towns of Argelès Sur Mer, Collioure, Port-Vendres, Banyuls-sur-Mer, and Cerbère are a string of pearls in inlets separated by significant hillsides at the end of the French coastline before the Spanish border. Perpignan is the biggest town to the North; Barcelona is not far to the southwest.

From each of these towns rise beautiful mountainsides covered in vineyards providing excellent and challenging cycling and walking opportunities. From these old vineyards grow a wonderful and distinctive mixture of reds, whites, rosés, and special naturally sweet wines (Vins Doux Naturels, VDN), not unlike a good Port. The Languedoc-Roussillon wine area stretches from Nimes, in the southern center of France, to the Spanish border. It is a complex patchwork of terroir, grape varieties, and wine quality. Many wine connoisseurs would consider it as one of the best possible wine price-to-quality bargains in France.

La Côte Vermeille is a part of Rousillon but is distinctly unusual with its seacoast and sun-soaked exposure on steep mountainsides of brown schist. This is a special pocket of variety unlike any other in France. It is also interesting in its cultural and linguistic diversity. Here we get the blend of French and Spanish, with Occitan and Catalan as possible local languages. The grapes used in the winemaking reflect this variety as well with black, gray, and white Grenache as well as Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, and a total potential of 27 grape varieties, many of them local and on plants old enough to burrow deeply into this rocky soil in search of the distinctive flavors. Summer cycling here must be done early in the day. These southeast-facing, steep mountainsides get very hot.

A 7 to 8 a.m. departure with an 11 to 12 o’clock finish provides a good day of riding on these mountainsides and allows time for a shower, snack, and siesta before a swim, beach time, and possible snorkeling and diving, all leading up to seaside supper. The riding along the coastline is excellent, with steep, significant climbing and enjoyable winding descents between each village. The roads into the mountains are steep, narrow, and rarely have guard rails. One could easily get vertigo standing on the edge of the road. They seem to be designed to discourage all but the most intrepid from driving them. They can be wonderful for cyclists, but make sure that you have gear ratios for climbing and plenty of water. This is the first rise of the Pyrenees mountains.

Further inland it will get increasingly rugged. From here to the Atlantic, this mountain spine is some of the most challenging riding in Le Tour de France. Following the activities of the day, nothing could be better than settling by the seaside for a much-deserved dinner.

With the sea at your feet, the best meals may include an assortment of seafood. A plate of shrimp with local fresh vegetables and a cool bottle of Collioure white wine is a wonderful end to an active day. With a taste for Spain and the fresh seafood, an excellent and very complete meal is the paella, maybe with a cool rosé. For those with a more robust appetite, the vineyards leading to wooded mountains above, and centuries of Mediterranean and Catalan culture of cuisine, also provide delicious possibilities of wild game, pork, local beef varieties, lamb, a wide variety of sausage, and delicious possibilities with snails. A deeply structured red wine with perhaps a blend of Grenache Noir, Carignan, and Mourvedre from the terraced mountainsides that you rode through that day can complete a circle of appreciation of terroir and wine structure.

This is an area with depth and variety of culture and language, on the seaside with mountains rising above. It has been the inspiration for a variety of French artists, and Collioure is known to be the source of the Fauvism school of art. It is truly a region that expands sustenance of the spirit and the body to the point of inspiration. Following your day of joyful effort, slowly rolling or walking through these wonderful terroirs, cap off your day, and send yourself off to a restful sleep with a glass of the naturally sweet red wines.

Pro Tip: For an excellent meal in a restaurant on the edge of the sea, your feet nearly in the water, the Poisson Rouge , just southwest along the seashore in Port Vendre, is well worth a visit.

Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event. Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

The journey continues towards the beautiful region of Lalande-de-Pomerol and then around the scenic vineyard landscapes of Montagne-St-Émilion.

The Beauty Of Visiting Saint Émilion, France

Nestled in the heart of wine country, Saint Émilion is more than just a starting point for our e-bike tour – it’s a historical gem that complements the wine experience perfectly. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this medieval village has preserved its architectural integrity and unique character for centuries. From its ancient ramparts to the monolithic church carved from a single limestone cliff, Saint Émilion offers an abundance of historical riches.

As you ride down its narrow cobblestone streets, the village reveals its layered history at every corner. You’ll spot Romanesque ruins, pass under the Gothic arches of the old cloister, and marvel at the formidable King’s Tower. Saint Émilion’s beauty and historical allure add a rich cultural element to our e-bike wine tour.

What to Expect From The Châteaux Visits

The wine culture of Bordeaux comes alive as we visit two prestigious Châteaux during the tour. Each Château, chosen for its exceptional wines and fascinating history, opens up a new chapter in your understanding of Bordeaux’s wine making traditions. You’ll walk through ancient cellars and learn about grape varieties, the art of blending, and the detailed process that turns ripe grapes into exquisite wine.

At each Château, an estate professional leads you in a wine-tasting session. You’ll learn to appreciate the color, aroma, and flavor profiles of different Bordeaux wines, discovering the rich palette of sensations that each glass brings. In addition, a leisurely French-style picnic lunch amidst the vineyards or around the Château offers a chance to savor local cheeses, artisanal baguettes, and other regional delicacies while soaking in the serene beauty of your surroundings.

Everything you need to know about cycling in France your independent guide

Cycling the wine regions of France

There are so many french wine areas to explore by bike – winemaker caro feely has this guide to help you decide where to start..

Need help choosing a French wine route? Why not use our bespoke service?

Let's state the obvious from the start: cycling is a magical way to discover French wine country. Favourites areas include Alsace, greater Bordeaux, Burgundy, Cognac, Champagne, the Languedoc, the Loire Valley and Provence-Rhone valley. This is an introduction to these regions (ordered alphabetically) with landscapes and cultures as varied as the wines.

Our introduction to cyling the wine routes of France includes where to base yourself, the advantages of the region, key city(ies) and the wines you can expect. We'll add additional links to more in-depth regional overviews as time permits.

Alsace is most famous for white wines and particularly the noble varieties of Gewürztraminer and Riesling but is also making some great reds from Pinot Noir.

The 170km Alsace wine route offers a great playground for cyclists. You can plan a one-way route staying in places along the way or base yourself in a key town like Colmar, a heritage town like Riquewihr or a small village like Katzenthal and cycle out. Colmar is a good option – it's big enough at 70,000 people to have everything you need and it's ideally placed in te heart of Alsace wine country.

The Alsace wine region itself is around 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres), making it relatively small and easy to get around. Not only that, the Alsace Wine Route is famous for its charm, great wine and easy access. The same is true for the bike route, which curves around the eastern slopes of the Vosges Mountains, passing through almost 100 wine-producing villages. The route also takes in about 50 AOC. Alsace Grand Crus – the vineyards designated as having the highest potential for quality in the region. The route follows railway tracks, parts of the old Roman road, and vineyard paths – all the time staying close to the main 'car' wine route and its landmarks, amenities and wineries.

The scenery includes scenic villages and hillsides that offer super views down onto the valley. The culture, food and wine are a fascinating mix of France and Germany.

For planning your trip the Alsace wine route and Alsace Tourist office offer useful tools including a GPS file and a PDF file with detailed routes and distances. There are wineries offering tasting around every corner. It pays to do your research in advance to plot the wineries you want to visit to experience the best the region has to offer (see our overview in the links below for more info).

Greater Bordeaux

The greater Bordeaux region, which stretches from Bordeaux to Bergerac, is not as simple to plan as Alsace with its clear single line main wine route. However it'll be worth the effort when you discover the delights of villages like St Emilion.

Bordeaux is the largest appellation (that is, designated and protected named wine region or 'PDO' protected designation of origin in EU regulation English) area in the world. It boasts 118,000 hectares (about 292,000 acres), around 10,000 wine producers and 54 appellations.

Add the Bergerac appellation – part of the Bordeaux Basin but not a Bordeaux appellation – and its 12,000 hectares (about 30,000 acres) and you have a lot of wine region to cover.

Bordeaux is most famous for its reds made primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other red grapes can include cabernet franc, malbec, carmenere and petit verdot. The region also produces great dry and sweet white wines from primarily sémillon and sauvignon blanc.

Saint-Emilion

A key part of understanding the reds from this area is Left Bank (Medoc and Graves) versus Right Bank (appellations to the right of the Gironde estuary and the Garonne river). The left bank has a layer of gravels (over limestone and clay) that came down from the Pyrenees with a glacial melt millions of years ago; the right bank is limestone and clay hence cooler than the gravels.

Cabernet sauvignon prefers warm conditions hence it tends to be the primary red grape on the left bank, while merlot prefers the slightly cooler limestone and tends to be the primary red grape on the right bank. From your bike you will see the terroir up close and really experience this difference in a way that is impossible from a car.

La Cité du Vin

La Cité du Vin, Bordeaux's 'city of wine' museum. Photo: Arnaud Bertrande/ Bordeaux Tourism

A trip to the region wouldn't be complete without Bordeaux city, which has become cycle friendly in recent years. Lanes in the old town have been closed to cars and opened to bicycles and pedestrians. It's a picturesque city worth visiting and has many wonderful cavistes (wine shops) and a very active Maison des Vins (opposite the main tourist office). The riverside promenade bike path will take you from the magnificent architecture around the place de la Bourse and the water mirror to Les Chartrons, the wine museum ( Musée du Vin et du Négoce ) and onwards to the magnificent new Cité du Vin where you can lose yourself in the subject of wine for many hours.

Given the size of the region and the city itself (800,000 people in greater Bordeaux), staying in Bordeaux city and venturing out for day trips is not the best option. Rather, get deep into the winelands taking a circular route for 5 to 10 days going to Cadillac using the Roger Lapébie bike path then onto St Emilion, Blaye and over to Medoc using the Blaye Lamargue ferry, or taking a one-way trip from Medoc to Bordeaux city and onto Cadillac, St Emilion, Bergerac, Saussignac and Monbazillac.

Monbazillac chateau

In the Bergerac area, a green route cycle path of 35 kilometres running from Gardonne (Saussignac appellation area, which has one of the highest proportion of organic vineyards in France) to Mouleydier (Pecharmant appellation area) is set to open in 2020.

If you do prefer to stay in one place and cycle out, booking a gite (self catering cottage) in one of your favourite wine appellations and riding out each day using the small rural roads rather dedicated cycle paths is also an option.

A highlight that should not be missed on a cycle trip to the region is St Emilion. As with most places, taking time to plan your trip, select the wineries you want to visit and booking them in advance is advised. St Emilion is only 5400 hectares but it is home to 820 wine producers, including 82 grand cru classés. A few have a permanent presence and it's possible to 'drop in' but most require an appointment in advance. You could also take the route mentioned above in the opposite direction starting in Monbazillac and ending on the west coast in Arcachon (leave time for a large glass of zesty Entre deux Mers sauvignon and a plate of oysters).

Burgundy is France profonde where wine, food and tradition are very much the focus. At 25,000 hectares (62,000 acres) and 84 AOCs – that's around one-fifth the size of Bordeaux but with significantly more 'protected designation of origins' PDOs – it's complicated, but oh so good.

The upper section of the Burgundy valley, 'Côte de Nuits' is famous for reds made from Pinot Noir, the middle section 'Côte de Beaune' (these two make up the famous 'Côte D'Or') makes both, further south is the 'Mâconnais' famous for its whites made from Chardonnay (also Aligoté in some parts) and the last section is 'Beaujolais' (part of the Burgundy valley but not a Burgundy appellation) with its light reds made from the Gamay grape. The bottom of Beaujolais is very close to Lyon.

Beaune is the capital of the Côte d'Or and the centre of Burgundy wine trade. If you prefer to base yourself somewhere and take trips out then Beaune is your place. From there you can head north on the route des grands crus (road rather than cycle path) to see the famous villages of Nuits St Georges, Vosnes Romanée and Chambolle Musigny, Gevrey Chambertin and then Marsannay (near Dijon). Make sure you leave time to look around Vosne Romanée and experience the most famous grand cru vineyards in the world close up including the hallowed Romanée Conti, la Tâche and Richebourg. Then head south of Beaune on the 'Voie des Vignes' (Vine Route, a marked cycle path) which takes you through the famous villages of Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Santenay. The route continues to Nolay and includes the villages of the Maranges appellation.

We cannot speak of Burgundy without including world famous Chablis, an appellation for steely chardonnay based white wine that is north west of the main Burgundy valley and 133km from Beaune. It is possible to cycle Chablis to Beaune taking in Dijon en route from but there is no dedicated cycle path in this section.

Champagne is a wine region covering around 30 000 hectares (74 000 acres) thus of similar size to Burgundy. Everyone knows Champagne, celebratory sparkling wine made from pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay. It starts life as a still dry white wine and through the process of a second fermentation in the bottle ends up sparkling and with a lovely biscuity character from sitting on the lees of the second fermentation. The 'dosage' at the end of this second fermentation means it can be rose, and from extra dry (nature or extra brut) to sweet.

Champagne vineyards

Vines and vines and more vines. Photo: Phovoir/ Champagne Tourism

The Champagne houses are an important part of the ecosystem here thus there are not as many individual producers selling wine as you will find in other parts of France. Cycle from Reims to Epernay as a one way route over 5 to 10 days using the new velo route of the Marne Valley or locate yourself in Reims or Epernay and take day trips. Big names in Reims include (among many others) Mumm, Krug, Veuve Clicquot and Louis Roederer while those in Epernay include Moet et Chandon and Pol Roger. Like other parts of France it is best to book your visits in advance - many of the champagne houses offer online booking making it easy to do.

But to experience the 'real' vibe Champagne it is worth venturing into the villages and meeting smaller producers. Try planning your route to stay with wine producers that offer B&B rather than taking the easy option of the big cities and the major Champagne houses - with these small producers you'll often find champagne that is better value and more characterful than the big names.

Cognac is a sort hop from Bordeaux (just over 100km to the north) and can easily be combined with a Bordeaux trip. The world reknowned spirit is distilled from white wine then matured in barrels, sometimes for over a hundred years. The vineyard region of Cognac is divided into six different crus with the top cru being Grand Champagne (13,000 hectares) and the second Petit Champagne (15,000 hectares of vines). There are other larger areas further out but these two provide the best quality and surround Cognac town, which offers offers a great base from which to take day trips north to Grand Champagne or south to Petite Champagne. Cognac is also on the Flow Velo bike route , making it an ideal stop on a ride from the Atlantic Coast to the Dordogne. Major Cognac houses like Hennessy and Remy Martin offer visits which are easily booked direct. Try also the local pinneau (white or red) on your visit. It's sherry-like sweet wine that's unique to the Poitou-Charente region. it's made by combining grape juice with Cognac. It's worth searching out local producers who make this truly local tipple.

Languedoc is a massive wine region with 228,000 hectares of which 89,000 are AOC. You'll find fresh zesty whites on the coast (think Picpoul de Pinet and Rivesaltes blanc sec) and heavier herbaceous reds in the hills (like magical Minervois, Corbières or Fitou) and down to the luscious vins doux naturelles (port style) dessert wines of Banyuls and Maury. If you're cycling the Canal du Midi , you'll be going throgh the heart of Languedoc and perfectly placed for detours through the vines. The Eurovelo 8 bike route will link Languedoc to Provence, providing a super cycling corridor for wine-lovers on two wheels. The region also as dozens of other bike ride ideas , most of them passing through the vines.

Loire Valley

The Loire Valley cycle route covers more than 800 kilometres that include famous wine country from the fabulous Sancerre to the far western Muscadet. The Tourist office of Loire Valley has made a 'Loire à Vélo' app that can be downloaded from their site and you can find many online resources for it.

This is a large territory 75000 hectares (185000 acres) with diverse wines. The Loire Valley is most known for its fresh whites starting with Sauvignon Blanc from famous commune appellations including Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé and Menetou-Salon. Start at the inland starting point of the 'Loire a Vélo', a tiny place called Cuffy (near Nevers), and stop in Sancerre (or overnight) for a lovely glass of their signature sauvignon blanc. You can also find fine Sancerre reds from Pinot Noir.

From there the cycle path will take you upto Orleans and the lesser known Valencay wine region before dropping back down Touraine region and its very famous commune appellation of Vouvray (made from Chenin Blanc) and its 'little brother' Montlouis which offers similar style wines to Vouvray at lesser prices. Then onwards to the other Touraine commune appellation Chinon known for reds from Cabernet Franc and some Gamay and Malbec. Bourgeuil and St-Nicolas-de-Bourgeuil appellations north of the river are worth a visit if you can take the detour. After Touraine comes the sub-region of Saumur Anjou with famous dessert wines like Coteaux du Layon, cremants (sparkling wines) from Saumur Champigny and Saumur, and the outstanding dry chenin blancs from Savennières just south of Angers with its single farm appellations of Coulée-de-Serrant and La-Roche-aux-Moines. Saumur town is a good place to locate yourself if you prefer to base yourself in one place and ride out.

The last leg takes you through Muscadet with its refreshing zesty acidity that so perfectly matches the seafood of the region. Ride on into the final stop at St Brévin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique) for a round of oysters and a large glass of Muscadet sur Lie. You deserve it.

Provence and the Rhone Valley

The ViaRhôna is an ambitious 815km cycle path from Lake Geneva to Sète on the Mediterranean. Using it you can discover the wines of the Rhone valley and Provence from north to south and then connect down into Languedoc.

Provence wine route

Northern Rhone Valley

The ViaRhôna takes you through this narrow valley that produces less than 5% of the total Rhone Valley's wine from the hallowed appellation of Côte Rôtie in the north to Hermitage and its larger less prestigious neighbour Crozes Hermitage in the south. The website of viaRhôna offers a handy planning tool to see wine tasting venues on your route. Northern Rhône reds from Syrah (Shiraz) and whites are made with Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne. The commune appellation of Condrieu produces whites exclusively of Viognier, rich oily wines with aromas of exotic and citrus fruit. In this tiny region (under 3000 hectares (7400 acres) with a big reputation and steep vineyards Tain l'Hermitage, a small town of under 10,000 people, offers a good base.

Harvest in Provence

Provence - Southern Rhone Valley

Ah Provence! Lavender fields, honey, luscious melons, hilltop villages and Mediterranean seascapes. Provence includes the large wine area of the Southern Rhone producing large quantities of Côtes du Rhone and Côtes du Rhone villages and the Provence wine appellations. Reds are made from Grenache, Syrah (Shiraz), Cinsault, Mourvèdre, whites from Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne and rosés from all the red grapes but primarily Grenache.

The Southern Rhone is over 70,000 hectares (173,000 acres) – with such a large area there are many options. You could select your favourite appellation and centre yourself near that or you could continue with the cycle path of ViaRhôna. Between Orange and Avignon don't miss the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for rich, spicy, herby reds made from upto 18 different varieties including several white grapes. The principal grape is usually grenache.

Off the ViaRhôna cycle route and worth visiting if you have time are other famous appellations Gigondas, Vacqueras and Baumes-de-Venise (sweet wine). There is a wealth of cycling potential off the viaRhona in Provence too – for example along the Mediterranean through appellations like Bandol located between Marseille and Toulon. It offers magical coastal views and delicious reds and rosés.

If you have taken on the ViaRhôna to its end then finish with a lively mouth-puckering Picpoul de Pinet and seafood in Sète. Santé.

Regions in France

France bike tours.

From the mighty Alps to the lush Loire Valley and the sunflower-strewn fields of Provence, the pleasures of France grow greater the deeper you delve into its distinctive regions. When wine lovers talk about the defining traits of a bottle or glass, there is one word they use above all: terroir. It refers to the precise combination of geography, climate, soil, and other place-specific characteristics that set one wine apart from another produced just a few miles away.

The notion of terroir also captures the very essence of France: a certain joie de vivre is present everywhere, but so much else changes from province to province (and often just between towns). From briny oysters in Bordeaux to decadent foie gras in Burgundy, an effervescent bottle of Crémant to an earthy Grand Cru, the notion of terroir is present in every aspect of French food and culture. It is a life’s work to explore it all, and our trips to France are a great way to start—or continue.

Sailboat on tranquil waters, Marseille, France. Mathieu da Cruz@Unsplash

La Belle France

France bike tours.

Bordeaux · Chambord · Champagne · Loire Valley · Marseille · Medoc · Paris · Saint-Emilion

Spectacular culture, unrivaled cuisine, and picture-perfect countryside make France the perfect setting for a bike tour. As home to one of the most famous cycling races in the world, the Tour de France, the country enjoys a strong cycling culture, whether you’re pedaling along the backstreets of Paris, biking amongst the best vineyards in Europe, or cruising the coastline of the south.

There’s no better way to discover Paris, France’s chic capital, than by cycling. Take a city tour to discover the glittering icons of the 'City of Lights' in one day: the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre Museum, and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Or, venture to Versailles, palatial court of the Sun King, to discover the country’s royal and revolutionary history.

Marseille is France’s second city, occupying an enviable position on the country’s southern coast. Historically a crossroads of trade and immigration, the city jostles with a rich cultural tapestry that melds European and African influences. Take a city tour to discover the Cathedral and the Old Port that lend Marseille its historic charm. For a different kind of day tour, pedal out to the Calanques, a national park of white cliffs and turquoise water, for a captivating coastal ride.

For those traveling to France to savor a culinary adventure, there’s no better destination than Lyon. Regarded by some as the gastronomic capital of the world, there are more restaurants per head here than in any other city in France. Take an e-bike tour with food tastings in Lyon to combine cultural sightseeing with a taste of local delicacies.

Venture into the low mountains of the Alpilles or pedal through Provence for a family-friendly tour of sun-baked Southern France. Just a stone’s throw from Bordeaux, meander through Medoc or cycle through Saint-Emilion on a guided tour of some of France’s most prominent viticultural hubs. Learn about the long history of winemaking in these regions and stop at some of the century-old chateaux for wine tasting flights and lunch.

“I had come to the conclusion that I must really be French, only no one had ever informed me of this fact. I loved the people, the food, the lay of the land, the civilized atmosphere, and the generous pace of life.”

Bike barge tour France — bon vivant by bike and boat

Fine French cuisine, equally good wine, charming chateaus, and a lust for life par excellence — it’s not hard to be tempted by a bike barge tour in France. And who are we to stop you! In fact, we too are lovers of cycle cruises exploring France’s classic landscapes, tumultuous history, indomitable culture and dangerously-good boulangeries, and offer a wide range of cycle and cruise tours throughout this diverse and very bike-friendly country.

Let’s start with the south: The city of Bordeaux combines cycling adventures, the finest of wines, the sun of southwest France, and the exceptional, culturally-rich city of Bordeaux itself. The Bordeaux bike and boat tour explores this wine region, discovering castles, grand architecture, beautiful rivers, superb museums, and world-class vineyards. Or perhaps opt for our Provence – Camargue tour from Avignon to Aigues Mortes, passing through wild nature, the Rhone Valley and Van Gogh’s Provence — and even spotting the Pont du Gard.

All roads lead to Paris on a bike barge tour France

Paris. Little needs to be said about the City of Lights and its famous Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, grand bridges over the Seine River or its cozy bistros… But it must be said that Paris is a wonderful starting (or ending) point for bike barge tours in France.

Take, for example, the voyage of exploration along the Seine River from Paris to Montargis , taking in the forests and history of Fontainebleau, and the impressionist hotbeds of Barbizon and Moret-sur-Loing. Or instead depart in search of the homeland of Champage, Epernay , biking, cruising and tasting your way through this region of Brie and sparkling wine.

Take French cycle cruise routes to Belgium and Germany

Paris is also a fantastic departure point for bike barge tours out of France, with our Paris – Bruges tour passing through the many delights of northern France’s rolling rural countryside. You’ll then enter the French-speaking part of Belgium, also known as Wallonia, visit Somme Valley battlefields, and the gorgeous medieval city of Ghent on your way to romantic Bruges.

Or take a cross-European bike barge tour through France, Luxembourg and Germany as you follow the Moselle River Valley; stopping off to sample its wonderful Rieslings, and relaxing in towns full of half-timbered houses, before pedaling on under the watch of hilltop fortresses.

The best wine estate tours in Europe

Our ambition is to offer you the best wine tourism routes and to promote wine tourism in Europe through its wine routes. For this, we refer to the experiences offered by our partners and we highlight the specificities of each professional, estate or winemaker. Everyone can therefore thrive in the experience that most closely matches their tastes through a cellar visit , the discovery of a castle , a stroll or circuit in the vineyards. Epicureans can immerse themselves in the world of wine and meet the creators of their favorite cuvées. The entire Winalist team is proud to participate in the adventure of wine tourism , and to bring to life tourist stays that bring consumers and passionate producers closer together.

Wine experiences to do in Europe

Red, white, yellow, with or without bubbles, lovers of good wines are always attracted by new discoveries. This is why Winalist offers you the widest possible choice of experiences to allow you to discover the vineyards of Europe. Winalist also invites you to discover a selection of wine tourism professionals who are not necessarily domains. Book an experience offered by the best wine bars or wine tourism professionals. A practical way to enjoy the riches of the land while staying in the city center, because wine tourism can also be practiced while sitting.

Discover the European wine heritage alone, in a group or with the family through certain exclusive events such as concerts or open days within their own vineyard. Some of these activities are free.

Offer a wine experience with Winalist

Do you want to please one of your loved ones, a wine lover, while leaving him the choice of his destination? The Winalist gift card is the perfect surprise. Valid for 1 year on all experiences in Europe, the card is available in several formats from € 10.

It will also be an ideal gift for your employees or collaborators by offering them the discovery of the wine route to measure.

Wine and wine tourism in Europe

Wine has long been anchored in European culture. In several countries, it has become a real institution. For more than 4000 years, historical accounts have mentioned wine as part of the lives of European citizens. Wine culture was further developed thanks to the Church, since alcohol made from grapes is used in religious ceremonies.

True spearhead of European trade with the whole world, our know-how has been exported since the time of colonization to the four corners of the planet. World famous wines are produced in Europe. Red, white, rosé, or even champagne and even yellow wine. The biggest producers are France, Italy and Spain. Germany and Austria also produce wine (mostly white) as well as Eastern European countries, and Portugal is more a producer of red wine.

Today wine tourism is developing strongly in Europe. The growing interest of novice oenophiles is notable. Wine is more than a way of life or a drink. It is also a way to discover the extremely rich culture of Europe. Many architecture, art and geology enthusiasts take advantage of an excursion in the wine-growing regions. Specialized offers for stays are developing, aimed at tourists from all over the world but also local inhabitants close to the vineyards and inhabitants of the territory.

The Best e-Bike Tours In The US, From Wine Country to Washington

Posted: April 23, 2023 | Last updated: November 29, 2023

E-bikes are surging in popularity and for good reason: they allow you to travel further and faster without having to break much of a sweat. They’re an ideal and accessible way to see more of America – and these brilliant tours are a great place to start. From small-group adventure trips to guided city tours, here are our favorite e-bike tours throughout the US.

Small-Group E-Bike Adventure Tour through Hidden Santa Fe, New Mexico

Run by Heritage Inspirations , the trip aims to uncover lesser-known gems in the New Mexico capital, all with the ease of battery-assisted bikes – which come in an aesthetically pleasing mint green color.

Starting at the Cross of the Martyrs in Fort Marcy Park (pictured), cyclists will pedal their way through the city, visiting attractions including the Randall Davey Audubon Center, the stunning River Park and the hip Railyard District. According to recent Tripadvisor reviews, guides are highly knowledgeable, and the tour takes guests along quieter streets, while thorough lessons in how to use the e-bikes are provided.

There’s plenty of stunning scenery along the route: think old-growth forests teeming with wildlife, tiny hidden coves, rural farmland and epic mountains. In fact, you’ll even summit Mount Constitution, which at 2,400 feet (732m) is the highest point in the whole archipelago. Needless to say, with lots of heart-pumping hills like this one, plus up to 37 miles (60km) of cycling per day, it’s necessary to have a reasonable level of fitness before undertaking this trip.
