That’s why, at this point in his life, the funnyman — known for his “Here’s your sign” bits about stupid folks who struggle with common sense or his involvement with “Blue Collar Comedy Tours” with Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White — has announced he’ll be hanging up the microphone for good after finishing his “Here’s Your Sign, It’s Finally Time Tour.”

Comic-actor Engvall (“The Bill Engvall Show,” “Dancing With the Stars,” “Last Man Standing,” “Blue Collar Auction”) is scheduled to return to the Lorain Palace Theatre for two shows April 3 .

The News-Herald talked to Engvall about making people laugh, Foxworthy and the one tour that will bring him out of retirement.

Q Hey Bill, you’ve been coming to Northeast Ohio for decades. What are your memories of the area?

A I’ve always had good reactions from the crowds in the whole state of Ohio. I remember back in the club days, we’d play Cincinnati and Columbus. I do know this: I fell in love with Ohio when I realized they put chili on spaghetti.

Q Well, that’s the wrong side of Ohio.

A I know it’s the wrong city, but it was like, “OK, that’s good drunk food.” One funny memory of Cleveland: We used to go to the Flats and watch those massive tankers navigate that little tiny canal. I used to think, “Man, somebody is taking out an eight-story building.” I was amazed by that. Then we’d get food from some cart just standing by the side of the road. God knows what we were eating, but at that point in my life, we didn’t care.

Q So what’s up with this retirement business? Are you taking the 30-year Cher retirement route?

A It was during COVID that I made the decision. It was when I couldn’t work and I didn’t have that same urge to get back out on the road. I knew it was time. You know what, bud? I’ve been doing this for 42 years, and I’ve had a blast. I’ve achieved everything I wanted to do. I always said I never wanted to be that act we’ve all seen where you go, “He should have stopped a year ago.” I wanted to go out on my terms. I’ve got so much going on. I’ll still do TV and movies, but it’s just the road is getting long. I want to start enjoying my life as a dad and a granddad.

Q Won’t you miss the adrenaline rush that comes from being up on stage and telling a joke that kills the audience?

A Oh, listen, I’m sure there will be times when I’ll miss it a lot because there’s really nothing better. I’ll miss that juice, but the problem is the traveling has gotten to be a little bigger than that moment. It’s funny because a friend of mine asked me why I was retiring now when I have everything rolling. I told him — with all due humbleness — that I caught the brass ring. I did everything I wanted to do. I had my own TV show, been in movies, wrote books, got gold and platinum albums. What else is left? Because I guarantee you nobody wants to see “Bill Engvall on Ice.” It’s a good place to hop off the ride.

Q It is true that early on in that ride people often confused you and your “Blue Collar Comedy Tour” buddy Jeff Foxworthy?

A Oh, Lord, Jeff and I, I think Wikipedia had us listed as cousins. And listen, that’s a great guy to be compared to. I remember a funny story when “Here’s your sign” first started getting big everybody thought Foxworthy did it. I said, “Jeff, are you getting people coming up to you saying they love that ‘Here’s your sign’ bit?” And he goes, “Oh, yeah.” I said, “What do you tell them?” He goes, “I tell them ‘thank you.’”

Q That said, what’s your best “You know you’re a redneck if…” joke?

A (Laughs) You couldn’t print it.

Q Finally, we’re guessing you’d consider coming out of retirement if a “Blue Collar Comedy Tour” ever had a reunion?

A I would definitely consider it. I don’t know that’ll ever happen just because it was lightning in a bottle. Our audience also has gotten older, but if the guys said they wanted to get back together, I’d give it a look. Hanging out with three of your buddies selling out arenas, while they’re throwing stupid money at you — I don’t know much better than that. I would have to be a quorum for all of us to agree on it, so we’ll see. I never say never, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on it.

The Lorain Palace Theater is hosting his farewell stand-up comedy tour, “Here’s Your Sign, It’s Finally Time,” with two back-to-back shows on April 3 .

The loveable funnyman also is a Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum-selling recording artist.

He shot to superstar status in the comedy world in the early 2000s, when he joined the Blue Collar Comedy group alongside comedians Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White.

You may also recognize him from his regular role as Reverend Paul on Tim Allen’s Fox sitcom “Last Man Standing” and, most recently, as the host of the TV series “Blue Collar Auction,” which premiered late last year on Peacock’s Circle Country Lifestyle and Music Channel,

Plus, Engvall’s popularity also landed him as a final four contestant on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” back in 2013.

In a recent phone interview, he talks about his decision to pull the plug on touring and why Ohio is one of his strongest fanbases, and he shares his laid-back plans for the future.

Q How is the tour going so far?

A It’s going about like I thought it would. There’s kind of a bittersweetness to it. I know that it’s time, but I’ll miss it. There will be times I’ll definitely miss being on stage.

Q Do you suspect you’ll do any more specials in the future but without the touring?

A You know, that’s a great question, and I never say never. But yeah, I could see doing that. Maybe in a couple years, just get really strong all-new material.

The other thing is to give (me) a chance for me to really miss it.

When people come see the show, they see 75 to 90 minutes on stage, and it’s all good. They don’t see the 22 and a half hours that you are traveling, in hotels, etc.

We have a granddaughter now (turning 3), and I wanna be a part of her life. I’ve never wanted to be that act — and we’ve all seen shows like this — where you go, ”Oh man, they should have stopped a year ago.” Whenever you tell people you’re going to retire, they go, “Oh, is this gonna be like when the Eagles retired?? Those bands have ruined the term “retirement.”

And listen, if somebody came up with stupid money and said they wanted a Bill Engvall show, they’ll probably get it. I’m just ready to have some Bill time.

Q And you deserve it — after 40 years on the road.

A And, yeah, it’s been fun. The journey’s been awesome. I’ve met some great people across the country and played in some beautiful venuesm and it’s just like coming (to Northeast Ohio) — I always have good memories comin’ up there.

When I was in the clubs, we would do Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland. I remember going down to the Flats and just having a blast.

I couldn’t tell you why Ohio’s been one of my biggest states, but I guess it’s because we’re all kind of the same. I’m a guy who worked hard at what I do, but there’s plenty of guys who are funnier than me that just weren’t at the right place at the right time.

Q So you’ve noticed bigger responses from Ohio audiences?

A Yeah, they just kind of adopted me it seems like (laughs), and that’s a great feeling. I’ve had great shows up in Ohio and I’m really looking forward to this weekend.

I don’t know if it’s maybe because I’ve finally come to terms with all this (the end of touring), but I’m just so much more relaxed now. When I first started doing theaters and performing arts centers and stuff, I’d be packed two days before I had to leave, and now it’s like 20 minutes before I have to go (laughs).

Q I read that COVID-19 made you realize you don’t love all the travel that comes with doing live shows. Do you think you would have done it longer if not for COVID?

A That is a great question. The honest answer is I had already been thinking about this over the last three years, but COVID really cemented it.

I found that I wasn’t missing being on the road, and when that occurred, I said, “It’s time.” I don’t know what’s gonna happen in the future. I may get two years into this and go, “You know what? I miss it a lot.”

But I think if I were going to do another tour, I would do a completely different show. More like “A Conversation with Bill.” Just like a very laid-back show where it’s funny, but I’ve got a nice comfy chair on stage, maybe take questions or whatever.

It’s just so much pressure. I say that, but it’s self-imposed — just because I always want the show to be the greatest. I want people to walk out going, “That was a blast” and not like, “Yeah … it was fine.” (Laughs).

Q What is your relationship like these days with the guys from the Blue Collar Comedy group?

A We stay in touch periodically, but, you know, they’re touring and I’m touring. If we all lived in one city, it’d be a different thing. But yeah, we stay in touch. That was the thing that was the greatest about that tour — it was just four friends. To be on the road with your buddies selling out arenas and people are throwing big money at you, it doesn’t get any better than that.

Q Plus, I’m sure it feels less lonely than solo work.

A Oh man, yeah … . Sometimes these theaters are really nice but you’re just stuck backstage by yourself and that’s not a good existence.

Q Not to embarrass you, but I read a very kind thing your manager JP Williams said about you, calling you one of the best men he’s ever worked with, calling out your personal and professional integrity. You do have this reputation with your colleagues. What do you think makes you so loveable?

A That’s awfully sweet of those people to say those nice things. But to be honest, it’s not just this business, I feel like that’s how we’re supposed to be all the time. I think we’ve fallen too easily into this (mentality that) “It’s easier to be a jackass than it is to be a good person.”

Listen, I have bad days just like everybody, but I just try to treat people the way I want to be treated … kinda the golden rule, really, without sounding cliche. When my time on this planet’s up, I want people to go, “Yeah he was a good dude, I liked him.’”

Q What can fans expect from this show?

A It’s gonna be a mixture of some new stuff along with some of the big hits, you know, obviously, there’s people who wanna hear ‘here’s your sign.’

And it’s also fun for me to go back and revisit old pieces that maybe I don’t do anymore. I want people to feel better when they leave than when they got there — that when they walk out they go, “That was great, I had fun doing that. I’m glad we went out.”

Q What’s the typical demographic of a Bill Engvall fan?

A That’s one of the things I’ve been blessed with: eight to 80 (years old) really. But I would say my main demographic is probably 35 to 80. You know, people who have kids or married couples. I’ll tell you … my biggest demographic is women, which I never saw happening.

Q I see that. My mom is a Bill Engvall fan. She cheered you on when you were on “Dancing With the Stars.”

A Tell her I said thank you and I’ll send her the bill for my knee replacement. But there’s a prime example of what we’re talking about. Here I am, at the time, I think I was 57, and I’m dancing with a 22-year-old British girl.

We had this dance, and at the end of the dance, I run over and kiss my wife because that’s just what I would do anyway. And all these people like your mother were like, “Oh, see? He loves his wife!’”

You know, with television, they’re always talking about, “Who’s sleeping with who?” Maybe that’s why bigger things haven’t happened, but I just don’t like to play the game. When I was on that show, they asked, “Who are you afraid of?” I said, “I’m not afraid of anybody. We’re dancing — this isn’t a cage match.”

Q What kind of projects do you think you’ll do in the future now that you’ll have more time without touring?

A Someone asked me what if I got offered a TV show or an acting show? I said, “I gotta be honest with you: It would be something I’d have to think about.” Because it would mean moving back to L.A. or working Monday through Friday and flying home for the weekend, and I’m doing that now.

I’ll tell you what I would love and what I would jump at is a recurring role on a show, like what I did with Tim Allen’s show (“Last Man Standing”). I’m in like five or six episodes every 10 shows.

That I could deal with. And if someone offered me some blockbuster movie, I’m doing it.

Q I see that you were in a horror movie back in 2016 called “The Neighbor.”

A Yeah, that was so much fun. I love being a bad guy.

Q Your brand is comedy is overall clean, something the family can watch together. Is that something you decided on early in your career?

A Early on I was way dirtier than now. I kind of hesitate because I don’t want people to think I’m Disney on Ice (level) safe for your kids.

They have to understand what life is because we talk about real life. I looked at guys like Bob Newhart and those kind of guys and they worked a long time. I could tell you dirty jokes that would curl your hair, but I always look at (my) show like, “Would I want my wife to sit through an hour and a half of this?”

Q What has surprised you the most about this business over the last 40 years?

A Just how people have become so uber-sensitive about everything. Like at the Oscars. There was no need for that. My thought on the whole thing was, did Chris (Rock) step over the line? Maybe. But Will Smith is the king of Hollywood.

He could have easily got out of his seat, walked backstage and met Chris face-to-face without all the cameras on. That’s what bothered me. And the fact that they gave him a standing ovation when he won his award. This guy just walked up and sucker-punched a guy.

I think it was all handled really badly. If you’re upset, great, but you don’t have to do it in front of everybody.

bill engvall tour 2022 ohio

Q So the biggest surprise for you has been how the culture has shifted with sensitivity?

A Yeah, it’s like things that people used to just laugh at, (now they say) “Well I find that offensive.” Well, sorry, but that’s what I do. If you find it offensive, walk out of the theater. I always tell people, “If you’re watching a TV show you don’t like, do you sit there and make yourself watch it? Change the channel.”

My audiences are so great; they know I’m not gonna ever cross that line. That’s why I don’t do anything political or religious, nothing about diseases — or if I do, it’s about me. I don’t worry too much about my audience because they’re good people and they just wanna come laugh.

Q Anything else you’d like to share about this show?

A Just to tell people to come on out and have some laughs because as far as I know, this is the last (time) I’m gonna be in Ohio.

Bill Engvall The Farewell Tour

Watch Latin American Music Awards

When someone who has made a four-decade career out of being funny decides to take a step back from what made them famous, there’s always that potentially nagging sense of self-doubt that can creep into the artist’s psyche. Is it really my time to be done? Do I have anything left to prove to myself?

In Bill Engvall ’s case, he knew it was the perfect time to bid goodbye to the road. “I always said that I wanted to go out on my terms. I never wanted to be the act where someone said they should have stopped a year ago. And I say this with all humility, but I caught the brass ring. I’ve achieved every goal that was in front of me in terms of stand-up,” he says with a smile.

And it’s through this sense of honesty that the comedian has gained a passionate worldwide following.

Currently on his farewell stand-up comedy tour, “Here’s Your Sign, It’s Finally Time,” which runs through November, Engvall’s introspective feelings are easy to understand. Born in Galveston, Texas, on July 27, 1957, Engvall has spent nearly his entire adult life making people laugh, and has found incredible success in doing what he absolutely loves.

While working as a disc jockey in his early 20s, Engvall was in a nightclub one evening with friends, who urged him to get up on stage and try his hand at stand-up. “After a couple rounds of liquid encouragement, I went up there and talked about my experiences being a DJ. And people liked it and I thought it was cool. And then I got approached by the lady who owned the club to be the house emcee,” he says.

But Engvall, who didn’t know much about the professional comedy scene, had no clue what the job would entail. Lucky for him, he got a crash course on how the industry worked.

“I didn’t know what the club emcee did at the time, and this was back when Garry Shandling and Jerry Seinfeld were still doing clubs and special events, so I learned from the best,” recalls Engvall. “I learned how to put an act together. People could have easily blown me off, but so many people were supportive. One night, I took Jay Leno to the airport and asked him if I could be his opening act, and he told me that I didn’t really want to be his opening act. He told me that I’d have my own career, and to stick with it. At the time, of course I was disappointed, but I guess he knew what he was talking about.”

Engvall also credits Steve Martin’s classic comedy album “Let’s Get Small” as instrumental to his decision to pursue a path as a comedian.

After moving to Los Angeles, Engvall nabbed a cable show hosting gig on “A Pair of Jokers” with Rosie O’Donnell, hosted A&E’s “Evening at the Improv,” while also appearing on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Show With David Letterman.” These early experiences provided him with the confidence he needed, but it wasn’t until he won for male stand-up comedian at the 1992 American Comedy Awards that he realized he’d done something truly significant.

“I always had the ability to make people laugh. I was never the class clown, but I was the guy who was able to set-up the class clown, because I never wanted to get in trouble. But when Joan Rivers read my name at the Comedy Awards, I realized that I’d been given a gift,” he says.

His first comedy album, “Here’s Your Sign,” was released in August 1995, and would go certified platinum while holding the No. 1 position on the Billboard Comedy Chart for 15 straight weeks. His second album, 1998’s “Dorkfish,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Comedy Chart, and ended up going certified gold. Over a half-dozen successful comedy albums would follow throughout the years. And of course, he’d become a household name in the 2000s with the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, which exploded across the country, even crossing the pond and finding success in Europe, despite the material having deeply held American roots.

“In life, you have to laugh as much as possible, otherwise you’re going to go nuts, especially with the way the world is today,” he says. “And when people overseas responded to the material, and I saw that it had struck a chord with people outside of my home area, that’s when I realized I might have something special going on.”

As Engvall’s generosity of spirit can be felt in casual discussions, it’s no surprise to hear that working with him for extended periods of time has enriched those who have been fortunate enough to do so. “I’ve been with Bill for 25 years, and he’s the kindest, most honest, and generous human being I know. His transformation of growth has been amazing to witness, and there’s nothing false about him as a person,” says Engvall’s stand-up manager, J.P. Williams, founder and owner of Parallel Entertainment.   “We’ve been close for a long time, and as you get older, you start to find your place, and he’s really found his. It won’t be the same without him on the stand-up circuit.”

Engvall’s stand-up success led to frequent TV work,   with appearances on “Designing Women” and co-starring roles on “Delta,” “Last Man Standing,” and “The Jeff Foxworthy Show.” He had his own TBS sitcom, “The Bill Engvall Show,” for three seasons and appeared as host of GSN’s “Lingo,” and, rather memorably, as a contestant on the ABC smash “Dancing With the Stars.” And throughout it all, Engvall has enjoyed each opportunity that has come his way, while trying to remain level-headed about his various successes and contemplating the future.

“I’ve had my own TV show, I’ve had platinum and gold records, and I’ve been in movies. And when COVID hit, and I couldn’t work, I realized I wasn’t missing it. I wasn’t sitting there saying I needed to get back on the road. I loved having dinner with my wife every night and spending time together, and the world has changed so much, and so fast, it just felt like the right time. And people are so sensitive in the comedy world right now which is another contributing factor,” Engvall says.

In 2021, Engvall’s newest TV series, “Blue Collar Auction,” premiered on Peacock’s Circle TV, a country-themed music and lifestyle network. The series, from Venture 10 Studio and Parallel Entertainment, features him as head auctioneer, engaging viewers in competition as various items are sold to the highest bidder. The series auctions off collectors’ items, such as celebrity memorabilia and automobiles, to virtual buyers while focusing on the personal stories behind the items.

He’s also made unique friendships as a result of his profession that will last a lifetime, including one with country superstar Reba McEntire.

“I just love Bill. I love working with him, and I love being around him,” she says. “Bill is a great family man, and his shows were family oriented with a little edge but everyone enjoyed them. Bill opened a show for me in Las Vegas and when we got on the plane from Nashville he sat with my son Shelby and they played video games and laughed the entire way.   He’s a great guy and a great entertainer, and I’m just so proud to say we are friends.”

Bob Kinkead, CEO of the Kinkead Entertainment Agency and Engvall’s stand-up agent, shares similar sentiments. “It’s truly been a pleasure representing Bill over the last 12 years, and I appreciate his work ethic and loyalty,” he says. “He’s always been on time and is the easiest artist to work with. He does a 90-minute, belly-laughing comedic routine for all ages. He reinvents himself on stage so you never feel like you’re seeing the same show.”

Keeping the show geared toward a nearly all ages approach was something that Engvall had in mind from the start.

“I wanted to do a show that the populace would enjoy. I got turned down for so many HBO ‘One-Night Stands’ because they didn’t think I was edgy enough, but here I am 42 years later still doing it. I never drew humor from someone else’s pain or misfortune. That’s not my style, and it never felt right. All the audience wants to know is that you are relatable to them, and for me, you don’t have to be the funniest guy of all time, but that you understand them,” he tells Variety . “Over the 42 years that I’ve been doing this stuff, I’ve noticed how people like it when you keep it clean. People love for you to be clean and relatable.   A nd that is it. And they come back, and they tell their friends.”

When it comes to the future, Engvall is excited to see what happens next, as is his agent, Paradigm’s Jim Dempsey.

“Bill is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet,” Dempsey says. “He’s a no-nonsense straight shooter, and as you can imagine, he always gives a good laugh. I’m excited about this next chapter in Bill’s life and career. As he wraps up his immensely successful tour, we are excited to focus on his next film & television projects. Bill has some serious chops, and along with his legion of fans, I too am excited to see what is next around the bend.”

Engvall has been a film fan since childhood, and has developed eclectic tastes in terms of what he enjoys watching in his spare time, and the types of projects he’d like to get involved with in the future. He cites playing the villain in the 2016 indie thriller “The Neighbor” as “a real treat” and notes he’d be game to tackle more roles like that in the future.

“I’d love to do a down and dirty indie where I go completely against type and do something that nobody would ever expect,” says Engvall. “I loved it when Robin Williams went dark in ‘One Hour Photo.’ I’d love to do something like that. And when I was younger, my dad and I watched a lot of westerns, so one of my ultimate dreams is to be in a movie western.”

Engvall’s love for his wife is very evident, and it’s clear that without her unwavering support, he’d not have had the chance to develop the same comedic and pop-culture legacy.

“I have to give credit to my amazing wife, Gail, for always believing in me more than I ever did. She made it OK for me to be myself and pursue what really made me happy. For 42 years, she never once complained that I was out on the road and missing out on things. I’ll never be able to repay her for that. The road can tear families and marriages apart, and I would never be the person I am today without her.”

But coming up this December, when his final tour wraps up, Engvall is looking forward to some relaxation, whether at his Texas ranch or just enjoying some quality time gardening, a hobby he’s become quite fond of.

“When I first started going out on the road, I’d be packed two days before I was set to leave. And now I’m packing 20 minutes before the flight. Things change. And I’m looking forward to a retirement from life on the road,” says Engvall. “It’s important for each individual comedian to realize when it’s time to hang it up. My family has been so great, and my wife, who is the greatest business manager in the world, she told me that she just wanted me to be ‘ready’ when that time comes. And it’s arrived.”

BILL ENGVALL’S FAREWELL TOUR! (TWO SHOWS, ONE NIGHT!) “Here’s Your Sign”

Bill engvall to retire from stand-up, announces farewell comedy tour ‘here’s your sign, it’s finally time’.

BILL ENGVALL

Bill Engvall is signing off. The comedian is set to announced that he is saying goodbye to stand-up, launching the farewell tour “Here’s Your Sign, It’s Finally Time” with shows running into next year.

The comedian/actor/author, who’s also a Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum selling recording artist, is best known for his “Here’s Your Sign” routine. Engvall decided to hang the microphone up after more than 40 years in the business.

“I have been blessed with the greatest career anyone could ask for,” Engvall said. “Making people laugh is a dream job and has fulfilled my life in so many ways. I’m excited to focus on future opportunities in entertainment and spend more time with my family. I’m not going anywhere – just hanging up my hat when it comes to sleeping in the airport and in-room dining.”

To ensure the health and safety of Bill Engvall’s fans, crew, and venue staff members, the November 6th performances (of last year 2020) at Peoples Bank Theatre have been rescheduled for November 5, 2021. Your tickets for the first date are still good!

Bill Engvall is a Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum selling recording artist and one of the top comedians in the country. Most recently, Bill was a contestant on season 17 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and as a fan favorite, he made it to the finals. Earlier this year, Bill lent his voice to the animated comedy series Bounty Hunters, which aired on CMT. He previously starred in, and executive produced, the TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall Show. Bill was part of the enormously successful Blue Collar Comedy concert films, which sold over nine million units and received a Grammy nomination. He also starred on the WB’s hit sketch comedy show Blue Collar TV and in several solo specials for Comedy Central. His second album, Dorkfish, also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Comedy Chart, as did his subsequent comedy albums. Bill has written several books, including his 2007 autobiography Bill Engvall –Just A Guy.

A native of Galveston, Texas, Bill moved to Dallas and worked as a disc jockey with plans of becoming a teacher.  While in a nightclub one evening, he tried his hand at stand-up comedy and found that making people laugh was truly his forte.  Soon after, he moved to Los Angeles and went on to star in the Showtime special, A Pair of Joker’s, hosted A&E’s Evening at the Improv and appeared on The Tonight Show and Late Show with David Letterman. In 1992, Bill won the American Comedy Award for “Best Male Stand-up Comedian.” He appeared in several episodes of Designing Women and co-starred in Delta and The Jeff Foxworthy Show.
