Combining some of the best aspects of the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Curve, the BlackBerry Tour from Verizon Wireless is a sleek, fast smart phone with a comfortable keyboard. This device ($199 after $70 mail-in rebate) doesn't offer Wi-Fi, and it's Web browser isn't as good as the competition, but the Tour's speedy processor, sharp display, and global connectivity make it well worth the investment.

The Tour has a beautiful design that puts the old, boring Curve 8330 and the8830 World Editionto shame. It has a chic black face, keyboard, and recessed trackball. The Tour also has a dark metal border running around its edge, and a subtle yet unique dark-blue carbon fiber-like design on the back cover. Plus, the 2.4-inch, 480 x 360- pixel display is bright and vivid, even if the high resolution often caused us to squint when viewing Web pages.

Measuring 4.4 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches and weighing 4.6 ounces, the Tour is nearly half an ounce heavier than the original Curve, but it's still pocket-friendly. On the left side is a voice control toggle button, and on the right you'll find a full 3.5mm headphone jack, volume controls, a camera quick-launch button, and the phone's microUSB charging port. The top of the phone has two soft keys for locking and muting the phone, design touches pulled from the Curve 8900 and the Storm.

The backlit QWERTY keyboard features beveled keys separated by frets (like the BlackBerry Bold), but, because the Tour is narrower than the Bold, the layout is somewhat cramped. Despite that small caveat, the Tour still has a better keyboard than most smart phones on the market today.

We typed a 45-word block of text on both the Bold and the Tour to get an idea of how fast we could type on each device. On the Bold, we completed this test in 55 seconds with 3 errors; on the Tour we typed the same snippet in 1:04 seconds with 6 errors.

User Interface

The BlackBerry 4.7 OS interface is plain but intuitive, with six icons on the desktop and more inside the main menu. While phones such as the Palm Pre have introduced new operating systems with enticing card-based user interfaces that make it easy to switch between open apps, RIM hasn't made any noticeable changes to the Tour's operating system. It works, but it's far from fun or exciting. On the other hand, you can multitask on the Tour, something you can't do on the iPhone . For example, we enjoyed surfing the Web and checking e-mail while streaming music from Slacker in the background.

E-mail and Messaging

brand new blackberry tour

With the first-class push e-mail experience we've come to expect from RIM, e-mail setup is--no surprise--simple on the Tour: Enter your e-mail address and password, and the phone does the rest. Your messages arrive in your inbox very close to real-time on the Tour, and it's easy to search through e-mails. Plus, unlike the iPhone 3GS , which is limited to 300 messages, you can store well over a thousand messages in your inbox should you so choose. The phone also comes loaded with DataViz's Documents To Go software, for light editing of Microsoft Office attachments.

You can install AOL Instant Messenger, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger all from the phone's Application Center menu, or you can download them from BlackBerry App World . Like the original Curve, you're limited to just 160-word SMS messages before you have to start a new text. The Bold, iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre, and most other phones these days, immediately start a new text and thread them together.

Web Browsing

The browser on the Tour is very similar to what you'll find on the Bold and Storm, but in this case the high-resolution display makes text a little too small to read without zooming in. Plus, panning around pages is slower on this device than on smart phones equipped with WebKit browsers, like the iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre, and T-Mobile G1. You have to wait a bit longer for the screen to redraw.

brand new blackberry tour

The good news is that the Tour offers speedy data performance. Over Verizon Wireless' EV-DO Rev. A network, the Tour loaded m.CNN.com in 3 seconds and the full HTML New York Times home page in 25 seconds, which is a little slower than the iPhone 3GS (17 seconds), but faster than the Palm Pre (27 seconds). Too bad the Tour doesn't support Wi-Fi like the BlackBerry Bold, iPhone 3GS, or Palm Pre. We saw good data coverage on our tests in New York City and New Jersey, but there are plenty of areas where you won't have full 3G coverage and will want the faster browsing speeds Wi-Fi offers.

Global Connectivity

Like the BlackBerry Storm, the Tour is a world phone, which means it supports international roaming for voice and data networks. You can make phone calls on the Tour in 220 countries, or voice and data connections in 175 countries. When you travel abroad, in countries that typically use GSM networks instead of CDMA-based ones, you'll be ready to roam with the included Vodafone SIM card. Verizon Wireless charges by the minute for roaming, and costs range from $0.69 per minute in Canada and Puerto Rico to $2.89 per minute in Indonesia for phone calls. GlobalEmail Monthly plans start at $64.99 for per month.

You can use RIM's App World storefront to find new applications for the BlackBerry Tour. And although there were 1,336 applications available for the original Curve on Verizon Wireless as of this review, there were only 584 available on the BlackBerry Tour. For example, there were 105 entertainment apps available for the Curve, but just 47 on the Tour. RIM is constantly adding applications, so we imagine that number will increase quickly.

We downloaded the Ticketmaster application to a Curve--which already had a lot of e-mail and applications installed on it--and on the Tour, to compare the speed at which each was able to download and install the application. The Tour completed the task in 35 seconds, while the Curve was still chugging along after 2 minutes.

Just keep in mind that you can't install applications to a microSD Card. The Tour has a skimpy 256MB of memory on which you can install apps, which is at least better than the 96MB available on the Curve, but nowhere near the storage you have with the iPhone 3GS or the Palm Pre.

Worse, App World doesn't yet offer everything that's available for BlackBerry devices. Pandora, for example, supports BlackBerry phones, but isn't in the App World store. And premium apps still require a PayPal account, which is annoying. We also encountered a small bug where multiple icons for apps appeared Downloads.

The Tour has a 3.5mm headphone jack and comes with a set of plastic headphones. You can download tracks from the V Cast Music Store for $1.99 each, or load music using a $14.99 per month Rhapsody subscription. We downloaded 311's "Jackpot" in a speedy 45 seconds, and there's plenty of room for music on the included 4GB memory card. The speaker was sufficiently loud, but the sound distorted at full volume during the opening guitar segment of the song. Using Slacker, and compared to the Curve, we thought a Weezer track sounded fuller and a hair louder on the Tour.

Using the aforementioned App World, you can also download and install applications to beef up your multimedia experience. Slacker, for example, takes advantage of your memory card for caching music, which will allow you to listen to songs even where you don't have data service. The Tour's speaker sounded much fuller when we played the same station side by side with a Curve 8330.

The 3.2-MP autofocus camera on the Tour took sharp shots with decent color saturation, but it was slow to capture stills (about 2 seconds). When the camera did kick in, we were impressed that our pics didn't come out blurry, even when subjects were moving. (The iPhone 3GS has an especially difficult time with moving subjects.) We also appreciated having an LED flash on board for shooting in low light, something the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre lack.

The video clips we captured with the Tour had a lot of artifacts and exhibited some blurring during playback. We couldn't read the text on the side of a truck across the street. The frame rate(15 frames per second) was good, though, and audio came through clear.

VZ Navigator comes preloaded for voice-guided turn-by-turn directions and live traffic alerts. The app found us in 15 seconds, and accurately calculated a route from Midtown to the Upper East Side in about 6 seconds. That's impressive given that some phones have trouble finding us in Manhattan, where it can be hard to grab a GPS signal because of the tall buildings.

Call Quality and Battery Life

brand new blackberry tour

Call quality on the Tour was excellent. We recorded two voicemails on a landline from the street in New York City on both the Curve 8330 and the Tour. Both phones were good at eliminating the background noise of cabs driving by, and most of the chatter outside came through as light noise in the background. Other callers had no complaints about the reception. When we put the phone on speakerphone our caller said we sounded good, but we noticed that her voice was watery at full volume. We were both, however, able to understand each other and hold a conversation clearly.

After nearly a full day of usage, we still had a quarter of battery life left, which is on a par with other BlackBerry devices. With moderate usage you'll likely recharge every other day, which is very good compared to other smart phones. The Tour has a rated talk time of 5 hours and a standby time of 14 days.

The BlackBerry Tour is easily the best smart phone on Verizon Wireless, and we actually prefer it's compact design to the beefier BlackBerry Bold. We would have liked integrated Wi-Fi, and perhaps access to V Cast TV, but overall the Tour is a winner. You get a very good keyboard, a zippy processor, excellent call quality, and strong data performance, not to mention RIM's trademark push e-mail goodness. BlackBerry fans looking to upgrade will be happy with this device.

New BlackBerry 2022 release date, price and specs news

brand new blackberry tour

A new BlackBerry handset was supposed to launch in 2021, with the brand seemingly back from the dead… yet again. However, no such handset emerged and, more recently, the likelihood of such a device launching has moved from slim to none.

Re-treading the rise and fall of BlackBerry is a common conversation in consumer tech, especially since the brand has had a second rise and fall in the last three years.

Once the business-tinged king of the phone world in the mid-2000s, the BlackBerry’s physical keyboard and straight-faced software didn’t survive the onslaught of the iPhone and the rise of Android. BlackBerry released one Android phone – 2015’s Priv – and then stopped making phones.

TCL then bought rights to release BlackBerry-branded phones, most notably giving us 2017’s KeyOne and then 2018’s Key2 –  an even better sequel. A couple of other handsets came of the partnership, but as of 31 August 2020, TCL stopped supporting these phones with software updates and the partnership ended.

So it was with some surprise that, in the same breath as TCL’s abandonment of its license, US company OnwardMobility picked it up instead and proceeded to promise a 5G-capable BlackBerry device with a physical keyboard, arriving sometime in 2021.

When is the 2022 BlackBerry’s release date?

In short, never; at least not under OnwardMobility’s steam, not anymore. But what happened?

A new BlackBerry Android phone was originally slated to arrive in “the first half of 2021”, according to OnwardMobility’s initial 2020 press release on the subject, however, a year on from that initial window, no such ‘Berry had materialised.

In late July 2021, the company announced its ” Pre-Commitment Program ,” offering fans and businesses a means of providing input on the development process of the first 5G BlackBerry, as well as the opportunity to gain early pre-order access, once the phone was ready for its debut.

OnwardMobility BlackBerry comittment program

While the program’s sign-up page didn’t reveal any additional information about when the phone would actually be ready for release, it did provide some insight into OnwardMobility’s progress, with the development of their device already underway at the time, but a final engineering design or specs and features had not yet been locked in.

In light of legacy BlackBerry devices officially losing software support on 4 January 2022, attentions quickly turned back to OnwardMobility and the apparent radio silence the startup had slipped into after mid-2021, leaving fans completely in the dark about the progress of its debut device and when to expect it.

Checking in on 5 January, the company’s website was stagnant; still only making mention of a 2021 release, with no new posts or activity in months, covering both the site and its social channels; making a “when” increasingly look like an “if” in the eyes of hopeful BlackBerry fans.

OnwardMobility BlackBerry coming soon 2021 in 2022

Following mounting attention from media and BlackBerry enthusiasts alike, however, a new blog post appeared on OnwardMobility’s blog just a day later (6 January), entitled “Contrary to popular belief, we are not dead.”

In the post, OnwardMobility acknowledged the absence of any public-facing communication and vowed to deliver “ more regular updates starting this month that will clarify and answer many of your questions,” concerning the development its debut device.

With regards to the silence up until this point, the post’s opening paragraph stated, “2021 was truly a challenging year to launch a new phone, much less one with the high expectations we set and the fact that we want to get it right,” citing unspecified delays that prevented the company from shipping its debut smartphone in 2021, as had originally been promised.

Even with OnwardMobility’s seemingly renewed commitment in bringing its debut device to market, however, it turned out that BlackBerry (the company) had other plans, not long after.

On 10 February, CrackBerry’s Kevin Michaluk described the project as “dead as of yesterday,” stating that numerous sources had verified that OnwardMobility’s efforts had been sunk.

BlackBerry (the company) had chosen to cancel OnwardMobility’s license (preventing it from using the BlackBerry name), a move that itself had followed on from the Canadian company selling off the last of its mobile patent portfolio, reportedly to the tune of US$600 million.

This loss of the BlackBerry branding, paired with the difficult and protracted timeline in which OnwardMobility was having to deal with were all apparently contributing factors in its decision to abandon the project. Less than a week later, the company announced that it was shutting down entirely, with its website being replaced by a single statement (pictured below), thanking fans for their support and lamenting the decision to shut up shop.

OnwardMobility's parting message

As such, for those still wondering or hoping when to expect another new BlackBerry, right now, things are looking bleaker than ever.

How much would the 2022 BlackBerry cost?

While OnwardMobility’s plans may have been scuppered there are still insights that we can use to estimate the cost of what could have been.

Pricing for the first 5G BlackBerry was expected to be fairly high, around perhaps the £800/US$800 mark, driven by the probability that OnwardMobility would have likely been selling the phone in smaller numbers than the average manufacturer.

TCL’s BlackBerry phones were generally more expensive than the specs warranted – compared to competing devices – and that didn’t seem likely to change with OnwardMobility’s ‘Berry.

A BlackBerry in 2021/2022 is a niche device, to say the least, and while the premium price would have no doubt been intended to reflect the exclusivity of a secure phone with a keyboard, the reality is that it would have probably been expensive because of this same niche appeal.

What specs would the 2022 BlackBerry have offered?

According to OnwardMobility, their new BlackBerry promised 5G networking capabilities and a physical keyboard. These really are the only two specs were ever officially teased, aside from the fact that the phone will run on Android.

As well as licensing the BlackBerry name, OnwardMobility was also confirmed to be working with FIH Mobile Limited – a subsidiary of Foxconn – to manufacture the phone.

The only part of the original announcement that hinted at the specs of the phone stated that “there is an absolute need for a secure, feature-rich 5G-ready phone that enhances productivity.”

That’s still pretty vague but suggests that BlackBerry – the company (after ceasing producing its own phones, BlackBerry focused on becoming a viable cyber security brand) – was likely involved at the software level, as it was with TCL’s licensed phones.

While the cancellation of OnwardMobility license was something of a surprising in this latest saga, the preceding trend of BlackBerry selling off its catalogue of patents was nothing new.

Over the past few years the company had been busy shedding its mobile patent portfolio, with 90 sold to Huawei as of mid-2021, though admittedly that’s a drop in the ocean compared to the purported total haul of 38,000 patents it was at one point in possession of.

“Feature-rich” perhaps means that the new BlackBerry was meant to be an all-singing, all-dancing high-end device, unlike the KeyOne or Key2. 5G phones don’t need to tout the latest, most powerful Snapdragon chipsets but it could’ve helped the new BlackBerry garner more staying power with buyers. The KeyOne, in particular, runs pretty slow today and was not well future-proofed.

OnwardMobility’s intended device apparently took a lot of cues from 2015’s BlackBerry Priv ; the last phone BlackBerry itself made and also the first BlackBerry to run Android.

We discuss Onward Mobility’s original plans for its first BlackBerry phone in episode 97 of our weekly podcast Fast Charge :

New BlackBerry 2022 wish list

With so little concrete information ever established about this unfinished BlackBerry phone here are a few things we would have like to have seen, in order to do the brand justice.

A high refresh rate display

The KeyOne and Key2 used the same exact screen and it was not a good one. Colours were a little muted and brightness wasn’t great. A premium BlackBerry needs to pack a much better display, and we’d hope for one with a high refresh rate in this day and age. If OnwardMobility was hoping to attract business professionals, it needed to treat them to a premium screen.

A superlative keyboard

It sort of goes without saying that the physical keyboard needs to be good but the last great keyboard on a BlackBerry was 2014’s BlackBerry Classic. The clicky, tactile keys haven’t been recreated since. The Key2 got closest, but the keys were too small and too square.

brand new blackberry tour

Sliding form factor

The problem with putting larger keys in is the expectation of modern smartphone form factors. The KeyOne and Key2 had poky screens in order to fit a physical keyboard below them and still have a phone of manageable size. As already alluded to, OnwardMobility would have been right to take inspiration from the BlackBerry Priv; with a regular touchscreen smartphone display and a sliding form factor that hides a physical keyboard.

Then again, if the phone had aped the compact design of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and made Android work properly, we’d have been in nostalgia heaven.

Good cameras

The cameras on the TCL BlackBerrys were all weak. We had hope that the 5G BlackBerry’s cameras would have been able to hold their own against modern smartphones. If companies continue to bring the brand back, they need to stop compromising on the quality of the cameras; one of the main things people value on their phones nowadays – even businesspeople.

A new BlackBerry with a keyboard is still on the schedule for 2022

A new BlackBerry phone is still in the cards for 2022, according to hardware partner OnwardMobility. Following a breakup with TCL in 2020, BlackBerry partnered with the little-known Texas company OnwardMobility to launch a new phone in 2021. After missing that launch period, the Onward Mobility team shared an update this week, letting BlackBerry enthusiasts know that their phone was still coming.

“Everyone has eagerly awaited additional information following our last announcement, but 2021 was truly a challenging year to launch a new phone, much less one with the high expectations we set and the fact that we want to get it right!” the OnwardMobility team wrote , “While we encountered various delays that prevented us from shipping in 2021, we will be providing more regular updates starting this month that will clarify and answer many of your questions about the ultra-secure 5G enterprise smartphone (still with a keyboard!) we’re bringing to market.”

They weren’t the only ones to experience shipping issues last year. In the midst of a supply chain crisis exacerbated by a pandemic, even Samsung and Google were affected. Google’s excellent Pixel 5a was restricted to a launch in the U.S. and Japan, while the Samsung Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE) was pushed back to 2022, and will launch just weeks before the S22.

At the same time, in an era of folding phones, a keyboard phone sounds more than a little retro. The problems that led to the adoption of full-screen phones will still remain, like a smaller screen space for instance. There are advantages to it, though. For those who like to take copious notes on their smartphones or send a lot of emails, a physical keyboard can be intuitively faster than a touchscreen keyboard. It’s also easier to tap out long missives on a moving keyboard than one with no travel, no matter how good you are at touch typing.

OnwardMobility’s timing isn’t random. BlackBerry this week finally turned off the servers powering its older and more classic handsets, from BlackBerry 7 to BlackBerry 10. With the brand in the news for a not-so-positive story and nostalgia levels on the rise, this new company was keen to remind others that it wasn’t dead. Should the phone eventually arrive, it wouldn’t the first modern keyboard BlackBerry to launch, with the KeyOne and Key2 already having been launched under TCL. Whether this new partnership can make a difference remains to be seen.

You know the drill by now. A new gaming phone launches, it has trigger buttons, some kind of cooling tech, below-average cameras, and a gigantic body that makes for an unwieldy daily driver. The Black Shark 5 Pro uses some of the same formula, but it's more graceful with the triggers and has a 108MP camera, as well as a cooling system that actually works. After gaming on this smartphone for three days now, I’m impressed with the sheer amount of functionality it offers. Impressive hardware across the board The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered smartphone has a lot going for it apart from the flagship processor. For one, it features a top-notch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and 720Hz touch-sampling rate. Secondly, the trigger buttons bring something new to pop-up buttons.

The Black Shark 5 Pro sports two magnetic pop-up triggers that are pretty responsive. When not in use, you can make them disappear with the help of the hardware toggles located right beside the two trigger buttons.

Wondering which companies have released new smartphones during Mobile World Congress 2022? Due to several launches happening just before the show itself, it has been difficult to keep track, so we’ve collected the best of them here. Oppo Find X5 Pro

Announced a few days before the start of Mobile World Congress 2022, the Oppo Find X5 Pro is one of the top flagship phones at the show. The sequel to the Find X3 Pro (don’t go looking for a Find X4, as it doesn’t exist), the phone is made from ceramic and metal and has two Sony IMX766 50-megapixel cameras on the back along with a 13MP telephoto camera.

Just weeks after announcing that it would definitely launch a new BlackBerry-branded phone in 2022, OnwardMobility has announced an immediate shutdown. The company will no longer be making a new Blackberry phone, and the future of the storied brand in mobile technology again appears bleak.

The Texas-based company had acquired rights to use the BlackBerry brand for mobile in 2020, with a phone initially planned for launch in 2021. When that didn't pan out, the company also announced that it was still on track, but it would just take a little bit longer. With supply chain issues affecting companies as large as Samsung, it was understandable that a small startup would be unable to make headway.

New BlackBerrys on the Horizon: “Tour2” 9650; “Pearl2” 9100; and “Curve 8910”

Anxious for a peek at the next blackberry smartphones we've got images and details on three of rim's upcoming handhelds: the second version of rim's blackberry tour, the "tour2" 9650; the blackberry "pearl2" 9100, a revamped pearl 8100; and the "curve 8910," which is reportedly destined for markets outside north america..

Keeping new BlackBerry smartphones under wraps is not exactly one of Research In Motion’s (RIM) strengths. In fact, details, technical specifications and even images of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry devices typically leak months in advance of the products’ official releases.

Such is the case with three new, as-of-yet unannounced BlackBerry smartphones: the CDMA-compatible, BlackBerry Tour 9630 successor, the “Tour2” 9650; the next in the BlackBerry Pearl lineup, the “Pearl2” 9100, which sports RIM’s SureType keyboard; and what might be the latest addition to RIM’s Curve family, the BlackBerry 8910.

First up, the BlackBerry “Tour2” 9650. Here’s what we know: The new Tour may or may not be called Tour2, but it looks just like the original Tour 9630 with a few notable tweaks. And the device’s model number is 9650, which places it in the Tour family.

The BlackBerry 9650 is an upgraded version of the original Tour, and it replaces the first device’s problematic trackball with RIM’s new optical trackpad. It also will reportedly sport Wi-Fi and a beefed-up processor.

Thanks to leaked images of both Verizon Wireless and Sprint’s inventory systems, it’s clear that the device will be coming to these U.S. carriers, both of which currently offer the original Tour 9630. No official release dates are available quite yet, but the appearance of the device in the carrier systems suggests its debut may be sooner than later.

The BlackBerry Pearl 9100 was first spotted in November, and though we haven’t really seen any additional information since, we know this device is the next in RIM’s Pearl lineup. (Check out some video of the Pearl 9100 in action.)

RIM’s Pearl devices, including the entire 81xx line and the Pearl Flip 82xx family, employ the company’s SureType keyboard and software combination . SureType squeezes multiple characters onto single keys to slim down Pearl device profiles. And the associated SureType predictive text software aims to guess the specific characters you want while you’re typing based on certain key combinations.

The most notable enhancements to the new Pearl include its optical trackpad–you should be starting to see a pattern here, RIM says it’s doing away with the trackball completely. It’s the third 3G BlackBerry Pearl–the CDMA Pearl 8130 was first, followed by the CDMA Pearl 8230. But it’s the first 3G, GSM Pearl. It runs RIM’s recently released BlackBerry OS 5.0. And the device reportedly features a newly designed battery.

The BlackBerry Pearl 9100 is also the first device in the Pearl lineup to sport actual Pearl branding; the word “Pearl” appears on its rear side, between the digital camera lens and flash.

Finally, the BlackBerry “Curve 8910.” Of the three devices mentioned here, we know the least about this new handheld, which just showed its face on the Web earlier this week. A Bluetooth certification for the BlackBerry 8910 was also recently spotted , suggesting it’s on its way to market.

Not including RIM’s SureType (Pearl) or SurePress (Storm) keyboards, the company makes two “physical” keyboard styles: the Bold/Tour keyboard, with keys that touch each other on the sides, but are separated on top and bottom by thin, guitar-fret-like sections of silver-material; and the Curve keyboard, which has space between stiff, hard-plastic keys.

The Curve 8910 looks to sport a Curve-style keyboard, with the body of BlackBerry Bold 9700–note the contoured upper-corners, which have only appeared on the Bold 9700 to date.

Mobile blog BoyGeniusReport.com suggests this new device may be the RIM smartphone codenamed BlackBerry “Atlas” mentioned months ago online. The Atlas supposedly features EDGE-only connectivity (i.e., no 3G), 256MB of RAM, a 624MHz processor, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The Atlas/8910 is expected to launch in both Asia and Europe.

Again, no concrete release dates are available for any of these devices, nor has RIM made any of them official, but if I had to guess, I’d say the Tour2 9650 will be released in the United States before the Pearl 9100 or the 8910 elsewhere. I expect a 9650 announcement and (hopefully) release within the next couple of months.

The Pearl 9100 should come next, though I’m unsure exactly when. A mid-2010 release sounds about right to me, but again, RIM hasn’t even announced the device, so it could potentially arrive earlier or later.

As for the BlackBerry 8910, this EDGE-only device shouldn’t take RIM long to cook up since it really doesn’t feature anything new–besides the new combination of Bold-style and Curve keyboard. The 8910 could very well be released in early- to mid-2010, but if rumors prove to be accurate, it won’t initially reach North American carriers.

So. We already know of three brand new BlackBerry devices RIM plans to launch in the New Year. Considering it’s only the middle of January, 2010 could be a very good year for “CrackBerry” addicts–and for RIM.

Quick Review: BlackBerry Tour 9630 Vs. BlackBerry Curve 8330

BlackBerry Tour: A Winner for Verizon Wireless

Being a loyal Verizon Wireless customer for the past decade, I have grown accustomed to disappointment due to the simple fact that most companies build their phones to work with the more widely implemented GSM networks such as AT&T with its exclusive deal for the Apple iPhone.

BlackBerry Tour - Front View

However, I have grown to love the BlackBerry platform and have been using the Curve 8330 for about a year. When I heard about the new BlackBerry Tour release, I was skeptical, simply because the Curve had, in my opinion, everything you could want from a smartphone. It was easy to navigate, was large enough to have a full QWERTY keyboard, surfed the web quickly, and still fit nicely in my hand. Now that I have my brand new Tour, I can clearly see everyone using the Curve from Verizon Wireless making the switch.

When the box arrived, the first thing that jumped out was the “Global Smartphone” words typed out on the bottom of the unit. Simply put, it means that the Tour, along with other Verizon Wireless BlackBerry’s such as the Storm, is capable of using a built in SIM card reader to allow customers to use their phones while traveling abroad. While I rarely travel outside the US, it could turn out to be a useful feature for those that make frequent trips outside our borders compared to the Curve 8330.

Features Compared to the Curve

Opening the box reveals the handset with all of its related peripherals neatly packed underneath. At first glance the new design features of RIM’s latest devices shines through and you have to admit that the phone is quite attractive. The faux chrome finish wrapped around the screen, keyboard, and black body pieces ensures a look of elegance for the phone, while the build factor is on the stronger side compared to past devices.

BlackBerry Curve

When you start the device, it is noticeable that it is much quicker than its predecessor. Commands are executed much more swiftly, partly due to the upgraded 256MB of built in memory. The new OS design is also both attractive and fuctional, however, one of the only complaints I have is that they did not include themes with the phone that were included on many other RIM Blackberrys . It does include a new feature that allows the user to create customer folders for better app management that previous versions of the OS.

Battery life is unfortunately a little shorter, especially when using the Bluetooth radio. Audio quality is also fairly good, but some people on the other end of the line seemed to think that I sound far away and have complained of difficulty hearing me, an issue not noticed on the Curve. I’m not sure if this is a legitimate issue with the phone or if it is just a quirk with my device, more testing is definitely needed.

Lastly, the phone does not include Wi-Fi support. While this is not a total loss, since it does have full 3G EV-DO Rev A support, which I tend to use mush more often that Wi-Fi, it is definitely missed since many of RIM’s competitors are integrating it in.

With all that said, I have to say I truly think RIM and Verizon have a true winner on their hands. The Tour is fast, fun, looks great, and has all the functions that one should and could want in a smartphone. It’s definitely an improvement over the Curve. 4.5 out of 5 stars!

New BlackBerrys on the Horizon

Keeping new BlackBerry smartphones under wraps is not exactly one of Research In Motion’s (RIM) strengths .

RIM’s Pearl devices, including the entire 81xx line and the Pearl Flip 82xx family, employ the company’s SureType keyboard and software combination.

A Bluetooth certification for the BlackBerry 8910 was also recently spotted, suggesting it’s on its way to market.

Considering it’s only the middle of January, 2010 could be a very good year for “CrackBerry” addicts –and for RIM.

TeleNav GPS Navigator on BlackBerry Tour All Ready To Go

Profile photo of Bla1ze

Grabbing yourself a brand new BlackBerry Tour? As with any new device release some of your favorite applications out there may not work with the Tour initially due to it being a new device, but there is one saving grace with the Tour that should give it the green light for most apps - the fact being that it is the same screen resolution as the BlackBerry Curve 8900. And of course, it being a BlackBerry not too much has changed with the OS itself. Some applications may work, some may need to be updated to meet compatability.

One application that is ready to roll though already most certainly is Telenav. Telenav has been hard at work getting their GPS location services available for the Tour and is currently now ready to show off how well it works. If you have used Telenav before then you are well aware it is indeed one of the best GPS applications out there with vocal turn by turn, real time traffic monitoring and more. And if you are new to Telenav, with their 30 day free trial you have no excuse not to give it a shot. Especially on that fancy new Tour ;)

Walmart launches new store brand with most products under $5

NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart is launching the U.S. retailer’s biggest store-label food brand in 20 years in terms of the breadth of items, seeking to appeal to younger customers who are not loyal to grocery brands and want chef-inspired foods that are more affordably priced .

The brand called bettergoods is just hitting Walmart stores and the company’s online shopping site.

Walmart said Tuesday it expects to have 300 products in the line by the fall, including frozen foods, dairy items, snacks, beverages, pastas, soups, coffee and chocolate.

The prices range from under $2 to under $15, with most products costing under $5.

The bettergoods line is divided into three categories: plant-based options like desserts made with oat milk and non-dairy cheeses; products catering to other dietary lifestyles, such as gluten-free, or made without artificial flavors, colorings or added sugars; and “culinary experiences.” The last category features items like creamy corn jalapeno chowder and pasta from Italy.

The launch from the country’s largest retailer comes as inflation has driven shoppers to seek less-expensive alternatives , lifting the popularity of private-label brands.

Private brands accounted for nearly 26% of the overall market share in the number of units in the food and beverage category sold last year, up from 24.7% during the previous year, according to market research firm Circana. That compares with 74.5% for national name brands last year, down from 75.3% in 2022.

For so-called core pantry items, including breakfast meats, baking items, fresh bread and salty snacks, private brands accounted for 36.6% of market share in dollars in 2023, up from 36.2% in 2019. That compares with national brands, which accounted for 63.4% last year. That’s down from 63.8%, according to Circana.

But these store brands are becoming tastier and higher quality, mirroring national brands. Walmart’s rivals, including Target, have been growing and sprucing up their own labels. Target’s Good & Gather food and beverage brand, launched in 2019, has expanded to include dishes such as chicken tikka masala.

Many grocery retailers face increasing competition from Trader Joe’s, which offers shoppers a treasure hunt experience with its variety of high-quality meals, ingredients and snacks.

Bettergoods joins Walmart’s other store-label food brands, including Great Value and Equate, that provide lower-priced alternatives to national brand products.

In contrast, many of bettergoods products are designed to be unique to Walmart while introducing its customers to new trends and flavors, the retailer said.

“As an industry, we’re seeing younger customers be more brand agnostic, prioritizing quality and value, and driving increased interest in private brands,” Scott Morris, Walmart’s senior vice president of private brands, food and consumables, said.

All the proof Taylor Swift is making first major change to Eras Tour

Welcome to "The Tortured Poets Department" (Eras Tour Version).

brand new blackberry tour

It looks like Taylor Swift 's Eras Tour is getting a brand new era, straight from the Tortured Poets Department .

Since the announcement of her new 11th studio album ( which dropped April 19 ), fans have been anxiously waiting to see if her worldwide, career-spanning tour would get a shakeup to accommodate the new music. While Swift is remaining mum, and a rep for the singer didn't respond to an EW request for comment, a new YouTube Short posted to Swift's account seems to provide all the clarity Swifties needed that a change is imminent.

In the video, which is part of Swift's #ForAFortnightChallenge tied to the album's first single, "Fortnight," the 14-time Grammy winner can be seen rehearsing for tour with her backup dancers. While some shots are obviously from the Folklore , Lover , and other existing "eras" of the show, several blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments have never been seen before.

In one, Swift, clad in workout gear, appears to be wearing the same boots seen in her "Fortnight" video . She's holding on to a banister that looks like it has the Tortured Poets Department emblem on it — the "P" and the "D" can just be made out.

taylor swift/youtube

Although the video is in grayscale, and therefore exact colors are impossible to identify for sure, several shots feature what looks like a new white-ish mic, which has never been seen before. The new era's color, of course, is also an off-white hue.

Perhaps the most interesting moment of the new clip, though, is one that features what looks like new choreography and costumes. Swift's backup dancers can be seen in top hats and dancing with canes, while she sings in the front middle of the group — choreography and props which have so far not been featured in the concert.

This is all speculative until the tour resumes in Paris, France, on May 9, of course, but if Swift is adding a whole new era, it would mark the first major change to the setlist since Swift began performing it last March.

Throughout the tour, she's made little swaps here or there: She added performances with some of the artists who opened for her like HAIM or Phoebe Bridgers, and she added "Long Live" to the Speak Now section when that re-recorded album released during tour. She also swapped out "Invisible String" for the "The 1" in the Folklore section after news of her split with Joe Alwyn broke.

But, nothing has majorly been added or subtracted from the show, which is already a whopping three-and-a-half hours long. Now, if anyone could pull off adding more runtime to Eras, it's the "Mastermind" herself, but it's more likely that some songs will be getting cut to make room for new material. Fans have theorized that the tracks that didn't make it into the VOD rental of the Eras Tour concert film — "The Archer," "Wildest Dreams," "Cardigan," and "Long Live" — could be first on the chopping block, but we'll just have to wait and see what Ms. Swift has up her cryptic and Machiavellian sleeve.

Iconic 00s band reunite for special tour after death of bandmate

The Wanted

The Wanted’s Max George and Siva Kaneswaran have shared plans for a reunion, embarking on tour dates across India this May.

While the pair won’t be joined by their other bandmates, it will be the first time The Wanted has performed in any iteration since 2022.

The group stopped touring after the death of their bandmate Tom Parker , who died of glioblastoma brain cancer on March 30, 2022, at just 33 years old.

The British-Irish boy band formed in 2009 and was catapulted to international stardom with chart-topping hits such as Glad You Came and Chasing the Sun.

Originally comprising Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Tom Parker, Jay McGuiness , and Nathan Sykes, the group captivated audiences worldwide with their infectious pop anthems and magnetic stage presence.

It remains unclear why McGuiness and Sykes won’t be performing with the band.

The new dates come as a surprise, given McGuinness’ previous insistence that continuing to tour as The Wanted would ‘feel weird’ in the wake of their bandmate’s passing.

When asked if the band would perform again in a 2022 interview , he told Metro.co.uk : ‘We all feel weird about making those sorts of plans without Tom. We were a gang and went around the world together and it would feel odd to be doing that now as a four.’

McGuinness announced on Tuesday that he’s joining the cast of the show 2:22 in Ireland, possibly explaining his absence from the tour dates.

The Wanted perform on stage during The BRIT Awards 2011

He’ll be joined by former Love Island host Laura Whitmore, EastEnders star Shona McGarty, and Once Upon a Time actor Colin O’Donoghue.

Announcing their India tour on Instagram, George and Kaneswaren expressed excitement for the opportunity to perform in a new country.

George described the tour as a ‘dream come true,’ emphasizing the significance of this journey for both himself and Siva.

He wrote: ‘Myself and Siva can’t wait for this! Our first time in India… Dream come true!’

Amidst preparations for the upcoming performances, Max George has also made headlines for selling his clothes online.

The musician has made at least £3,500 by selling his old belongings, including pieces from his time with The Wanted, but plenty more still remain up for sale on his Depop page.

American sportsmen discover new zealand’s hunting and fishing paradise.

The world's largest red deer stags are the prized attraction for international hunters visiting New ... [+] Zealand.

Long before Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy put New Zealand on everyone’s travel list, hunters and anglers long coveted the island nation’s riches of fish and game. It is a sportsman’s Jurassic Park, where beasts grow to near-mythic dimensions and the stunning landscape inspired the fictitious land of Middle-earth.

New Zealand’s temperate climate, rich volcanic soils, lack of apex predators, and lush pasturelands proved the perfect habitat on which to introduce all manner of the Old World’s famous game—especially red deer.

New Zealand's many mountain-framed lakes provide stunning backdrops for many adventures.

In the early 1900s, the red deer, chamois from the Alps, fallow deer, the large-bodied sambar deer, reclusive rusa stags, Himalayan tahr (a mountain goat-like animal), elk from North America, and wild boar were all brought to New Zealand, a country that originally had but one species of mammal—a bat.

Essentially, game keepers and biologists saw New Zealand as a blank canvas on which to create a wild game masterpiece, so they did. Without natural predators nor severe winters to slow the population growth of the country’s new cast of horned and antlered creatures populations of many of the introduced species exploded. So prolific were the red deer, for instance, that a few decades ago game managers were forced to conduct extensive culling operations to bring the deer numbers back to levels the habitat could support.

Apple s iphone 16 pro design revealed in new leak, charlotte shooting 4 officers killed while serving warrant.

John Scurr poses with a pair of pukeko or swamphens, one of several indigenous game birds found in ... [+] New Zealand.

Today, these same red deer have become a popular draw for hunters from across the world—especially Americans. Thousands of U.S. hunters travel to New Zealand annually to partake in big game hunting.

“Most hunters know of New Zealand as the home of the world’s biggest stags,” says John Scurr , a Kiwi native and veteran hunting operator who specializes in arranging custom hunting and fishing experiences for all manner of the nation’s fish and game. “But we have many game species that are thriving here on both the North and South islands.”

Wine tours are just one of many diversions available to visiting sportsmen.

For Scurr, however, it’s about customizing diverse New Zealand tour packages that allow visiting hunters and anglers to immerse themselves in a wide range of attractions and activities that complement rod and gun adventures.

“New Zealand is a his and her (and family) destination, so if a hunter wants to bring a non-hunting spouse or friend here,” says Scurr, “we can arrange a wide assortment of activities from helicopter junkets to volcanos and glaciers, lake excursions, wine tours, glacier climbing, jet boating, hiking and biking, bungy jumping, parasailing, or drives through the countryside to explore any number of our inviting communities.”

New Zealand's wealth of breathtaking scenery is reason enough to visit.

Sportsmen’s dollars, then, are helping support the entire tourism economy, the nation’s second largest industry behind agriculture. In addition, hunting provides the financial incentive to keep lands wild, supporting myriad non-game species that depend on the same cover as deer and other game.

“Rather than sitting in a lodge for a week and then returning home,” says Scurr, “many of our sporting clients want to experience more of New Zealand before they go. And most of our hunting areas are conveniently located near other great attractions.”

The bustling and beautiful town of Wanaka with a population of some 12,000 is located on the shores of stunning Lake Wanaka, a 74-square-mile body of water, and is home base for Scurr’s South Island adventures.

Scurr poses with accomplished Oklahoma hunter Suzie Brewster and her giant stag.

“We put some of our hunters up in well-appointed lakeside condos,” he says, “and we dine in restaurants that are all within easy walking distance. And our hunting areas are located just a ten-minute drive from town. This has been a very popular package for us as non-hunting spouses can enjoy a wide range of amenities offered in Wanaka (spas, shops, restaurants, tours, art, and cultural opportunities) and then come together with their husbands after the hunt to share an evening on the town.”

Nearly as famous as its stag hunting, New Zealand is a celebrated fly-fishing destination for outsized rainbow and brown trout. The plethora of gin-clear rivers and lakes along with a handful of famous lodges, put the country high on most trout anglers’ must-visit list.

The inviting and bustling community of Wanaka is home base for Scurr's South Island offerings.

Adding some bird hunting to the menu is a simple proposition as well, for New Zealand has a mix of endemic and introduced game bird species including the highly prized (and striking) paradise duck.

For hunters who don’t want the hassle of flying with their own firearms, Scurr has a wide assortment of rifles and shotguns for rent. “We find that most hunters choose to use our guns because it saves a lot of headaches dealing with gun licensing and customs. But if a hunter would rather bring his favorite rifle, we’ll assist with the permit process as well.”

For Scurr, sharing the best of New Zealand is his life's passion.

For Scurr, it’s about sharing the wealth of sporting and recreational opportunities that his native New Zealand has to offer. “We have a unique landscape and with that comes special opportunities for visiting sportsmen and others,” he says. “And when someone books with us we want them to go home and share the experience with their friends as they plan their next adventure to New Zealand.”
