We all had a nice time out seal watching. The Captain and crew were great. Very informative of the seals and their surroundings. Everyone on the boat had a good time. We will be back!!!

This is my go-to for beach trips to Rockaway! When you book your tickets in advance for the American Princess ferry to Rockaway, you don't have to wait in the insanely long line that everyone else waits in for the NYC Ferry. I've had friends book tickets in advance for the NYC Ferry, but the line was so long that they ended up having to take the subway instead. When you book through American Princess you're guaranteed a spot on the ferry and never have to wait longer than ~15 minutes to get on the boat. I recommend arriving at 10:30 to pick up tickets and then to boat starts boarding at 10:45. The staff are super friendly and there's even a bar on board! Definitely worth the money!

I got a voucher for the seal cruise through TravelZoo, but never got to use it. Why? American Princess kept cancelling my reservation! I'd get an email the day before from Groupon that my reservation had been cancelled and the tour was now at a different time and I'd have to make a new reservation. Two tries and I gave up. I paid $30 and never made it on a boat.

Short version: Saw 8 whales and 50+ dolphins and one sea turtle, had an amazing time, packed lunch and bought cocktails, and arrived early for a good seat. We went on the whale and dolphin tour with Gotham Whale/American Princess Cruises on September 21 for my birthday after my coworker recommended it. It was an INCREDIBLE day! We called the morning of to make sure they had room for 3 more reservations and they told us to come down and we could pay for our tickets at the dock. Their directions to the dock were simple to follow and parking was free, and we paid in cash before boarding. Tickets were even discounted by $2 each, but I'm not sure if that was for paying in cash or paying in person. The boat was in great condition, roomy and able to accommodate the size of the tour group perfectly. There are two restrooms on board. Everyone had a seat with room to move around. We boarded around 11:20 and were able to stake out a good spot on top at a picnic bench. The top deck was shaded but had open sides for unobstructed views, and there are snacks (hotdogs, Easy Mac, chips, etc.) for sale, sodas, waters, coffee, and a full bar with top shelf liquor, but all food and drink are cash only, so be sure to bring cash (also to tip your crew). You can also bring your own food in small bags (like backpacks and purses) on board but don't bring a large, hard-sided cooler or outside alcohol. We had great Bloody Marys from the bar shortly after leaving and enjoyed a beautiful boat ride for about an hour before we came across our first whale. On the boat rides to and from, there are educational talks about the whales, their history in the New York area, and other wildlife we saw. You can move about the boat to see whales from different spots, though it does get crowded on the more narrow sides of the lower deck. I preferred to move about the top deck all day. Once we saw the first whale, there was a steady stream of sightings. The captain is great about turning the boat so all sides of the ship have a chance to see the whales and the crew announces all sightings. We would cut the engine and just drift while near the whales and at these times the waves did affect some people with motion sickness, but the crew was prepared with bags and I don't think anyone actually got sick and most people were completely unaffected. But if you're prone to motion sickness, take Dramamine ahead of time or get a motion sickness bracelet because you spend about two hours stop and go as you near the whales. In total we saw eight whales, some quite close to the boat, lots of blowholes and flutes but no breaching. We also saw a sea turtle right next to the boat and at least one large pod of feeding dolphin. We brought cameras but after a few shots and videos we mostly preferred to just observe and enjoy the day instead of seeing it through phones/lenses. Several people had very professional equipment and seemed to get great shots. All total, it was a beautiful and exciting day, a smooth ride, an accommodating and well educated crew, and an all-around good day. I will tell everyone I know to go on this tour and we'll look into other tours from the company. Even had we not seen as many whales and dolphins, or nothing at all, it was a beautiful boat ride and a nice way to spend the day, but we were lucky to have a spectacular day of sightings. Tip your crew well--they deserve it!

What do you know?! There's Whale Watching in NYC! Totally worth the time and money. Friendly and informative staff. Clean boat and I mean clean! The bathroom does not smell. Reasonable prices for onboard beverages and snacks. Much thanks to Mitchell for being extremely helpful upon our early arrival and gave us pointers as to what to and what not to do. Definitely will return for another trip and more!

There is not much to say apart from the fact that I truly fell in love with this mode of transport to get to Rockaway Beach. Ok, so they do only go to Jacob Riis Landing/Fort Tilden, but what better way to get really away from it all??? And I rather spend my time on an hour long boat ride out in the open than on the subway or the train to get to the beach. The round trip ticket for 30$ seems steep to some, but you get to see the city skyline and Coney Island like you have never seem before - it's an experience not to be missed!

Reading all the reviews from start to finish here on Yelp, the AP overall gets good reviews. BUT some of these negative statements are comical! The experience that I have had on the AP is nothing short of "its amazing!" Its an amazing thing to go on a whale and dolphin watching boat in NYC...EVEN if you do not see Whales and Dolphins! There is a CASH bar on the boat for the basics of beer, drinks and snacks. The food of choice is Hot Dogs...If you want anything more than that bring your own and never bring glass on a boat. The AP is a ferry and whale and dolphin watching boat, it is spotless, they do not fish off this boat therefor it does not smell like bait or fish. It has two bathrooms that are very clean. You could get wet by boat spray in the front of the boat. Sometimes even when its hot you could get cold dress accordingly for both. You need to understand, you are going on a boat, on the Atlantic Ocean...there are waves. The boat floats on that ocean and you could be affected by motion sickness or Seasickness and its horrible and it will ruin your trip...BE PREPAIRED! Get seasickness medication from CVS or a doctor or don't go on the boat if you are in anyway prone to this! Its not the boat or the crews fault the seas are bigger than you can handle and "any boat" is not going in early because you are seasick. Bring sunscreen. get there at least 30 minutes before the boat goes out. Its a 4 hour "Whale and Dolphin adventure"! If they see "Dolphins" its a success, if they see "Whales" its a success. The AP does not guarantee sightings but depending on the trip, if NOTHING is seen there might be a discount coupon for a return trip. Understand, these captains work hard to find theses mammals, they take pride in providing this service! BUT...This is not sea world! These mammals are free and free to roam the oceans, they have tails and go where they want when they want, no whale watching boat controls them. The AP did go out looking for whales and dolphins, it burned 4 hours of fuel, the crew and naturalists did their job and all that aint cheap...in NYC! Whales or no whales it is an amazing time at a very fair price with incredible sights of NYC beach's, birds and the NYC Skyline. Its a bonus they even give a discount at all. There are also groupons at different times of the year, keep an eye out and take advantage. Bottom line - get out on the AP and enjoy the sights. Be prepared for anything the sea has to offer and tell your friends how amazing this trip was when you did!

This is an amazing experience going Whale and Dolphin watching on the American Princess Cruises with Gotham Whale! The boat is clean! it's a ferry and whale watching boat NOT a fishing boat (no fish guts, no smell). You are never out of sight of the NYC skyline and the photos taken on this boat with that backdrop are spectacular. It's always cooler on the water so dress for it and take off the layers when needed (YES, even if it is 80+ deg). You can get food on the boat but it's mostly snacks, so if you're hungry bring your own food and drink. They do have a small bar and ice cold beer, bring cash no credit cards at the bar. It is a 95 foot boat and it is rare that this boat cancels a trip due to weather. The boat can handle anything it goes out in but can you? Always check the marine forecast for yourself. The price they charge is VERY FAIR! I own my own boat, it's cheaper for me to go on the American Princess whale watching then to go out on my boat (no joke!). The American Princess captains do not give up looking for whales!!! Get on the boat you won't be disappointed and look for the Groupon early in the season.

What a wonderful operation! I was meeting friends for a seal and birdwatching cruise today, and found myself running late on the other side of the island. I called my friend to say that I might not make it...and the owner, Tom, drove them over and picked me up!?! Such genuine and unprecedented hospitality. I still kinda' can't believe it. The whole crew could not have been more kind or informative, the boat is well-equipped and beautifully maintained. They have beer, coffee, hot dogs and chips for purchase onboard. We saw adorable seals, lots of birds, and had a really lovely afternoon on the water. We wandered over to Ft. Tilden beach afterwards...and I can't imagine a more perfect plan for the day. Highly recommend.

Entire crew very professional and polite!! Naturalist on board. I have traveled to Alaska and Hawaii to see whales- never got to see as many as I did on my trip in the Rockaways!!! Very nice-Great Family Day Out !! Would Definitely recommend. Food and drinks are well priced-ie $2.00 can of soda:)
