I have been traveling for the past 50 years and have visited many countries, I had never taken a tour before my travel mates and I took the the Southern Sicily tour. We chose GAdventures for this trip because the tour group was small, and because the tour visited so many of the major sites in Sicily. We were extremely lucky to have Luca as our tour leader. He was a wealth of information, and his love for Sicily was contagious. Luca took the time to get to know everyone in our small group and that added a personal touch to the tour. I recommend GAdventures tours without hesitation. It was just the best experience!

Splendor of Sicily 8 Days Tour - from Catania

The guide Placido was excellent. The driver was great as well. Tour was enjoyable with full days and decent hotels. The meals that were included were just ok. I would suggest that the servers go the extra mile and introduce each service rather than just placing them on the table. That small gesture would add a little more "class" and appreciation. Nice to know what we are eating!!! The especially bad eating experience was on day 5. Etna. The lovely restaurant presented 8 of us with 2 meager platters of eggplant and

We really enjoyed the tour. Some of the meals were great, other meals not so much. Some of the hotels were great, some others also not very good. The hotel in Catania (4 days) did not have functioning airconditioning and the dinners there were actually depressing. We passed on the second-night dinner at the hotel and went elsewhere. Our guide (Placido) was very knowledgeable and helpful. Our driver (Angelo) was also very good and courteous.

The trip was well organized. The guide - Placido certainly knew his subjects and was very happy to answer questions. Also you did need to be fit ( I am) but some people found the wakking/steps very difficult

Absolute Sicily: Palermo - Palermo (10 days/9 nights) Tour

Absolute Sicily: Palermo - Palermo (10 days/9 nights)

The positives were the primary UNESCO World Heritage sites in Sicily. Our Driver Angelo was outstanding. Our guide Placido, was very informative; but too fast and did not linger in some important sites because tour time was concentrated (not his fault). The Tour could be extended to 10 days to allow more time; add overnight in Ragusa, Taormina or Cefalu (in exchange for 2 days in Catania). Loved the brioche and granita experience. The negatives: I paid for single supplement and was moved 3 times to different hotels after booking, receiving written confirmation and invoice from Gartours for Hotel Federico II in Palermo first and last nights. Those 2 unexpected, unforeseen moves created undo stress. My arrival on the first day was utter chaos: taxi drop off at Federico II and then told I was not in that hotel. Only told (no explanation) I was at the Mercure Hotel . I had to find my way and lug my luggage to the Mercure hotel. On the last night I was the single person with 2 other couples who were moved to the Garibaldi (very musty, tired hotel). NO EXPLANATION OR APOLOGY on 2nd move. The other tour members and new joined group, were all together in NH hotel near the Kala. We had to be shuttled to the NH hotel for dinner. The NH hotel was a much nicer hotel, with views of the seaport; when compared to Garibaldi and views of a torn up street they were reconstructing. THERE WAS UTTER CHAOS AND BAD FEELINGS at the end of my tour. Should have ended with happier sentiments of Sicily and satisfaction. Given the 2 hotel movements, I would never have booked, paid single supplement, nor stayed at these hotels when compared to the 4 star Hotel Federico !!!! There should be some compensation or refund for the forced hotel movement, inconveniences and cost of taxi. Hotel Federico staff was not helpful on the move to Mercure hotel. They did not provide initial directions to the Mercure. I had to be insistent for a map, address and walking directions to the Mercure Hotel. Stressful and tiring experience. A bit of a downer to start my Sicily tour. Negative: not enough time to linger in these UNESCO sites. Disappointed that my Whisper audio device did not work in Piazza Armerina & not given a replacement; missed the entire explanation. Other tour companies had ready replacement/backup audio devices. Negative: The food was not very good, sipid, and sometimes cold; cheapest cuisine for a tour. Lunches were best when not prepaid. Negative: Additional costs such as city tax...that should be included in tour cost. Some hotels gave receipts while others did not to prove payment in case of discrepancy. Some hotels such as, IL Principe, did not have a good accounting of the mini bar; wanted to charge for items that were not used. Negative: Tour operator/guide should provide a printed daily itinerary in the hotel lobby; to avoid repeat instructions and inform/remind tour members of times, agenda and departures. INSIGHT TOURS AND OAT provided itinerary in lobby. Negative: Luggage tags that could be identified for our group; versus co-mingling with other tours in the same hotel. Negative: Not aware this tour would be a caravan for picking up and dropping off people throughout my 9 day tour. It was difficult when picking up a large group during the tour and feeling encroached. Negative: cooking class in Catania toward the end of our tour for the evening meal was too time consuming and laborious. Some inconsistency with individual servings not well prepared by tired tourists who would rather be seated and eat. The Taormina lunch stop had it right, they demonstrated the cooking class and then served the prepared dishes.

Discovery of Sicily - 8 Days Tour

Discovery of Sicily - 8 Days

I had the entirely wrong perception of what the tour would be like, having been on SIX “small group” tours in Italy before. All those tours were with the leader who was with the group in the same hotel all the time. We were driven around in a mini bus with local guides here and there. So you shared the experience with the same people over the week or so, and the leader told you what would be happening each day. So I found being on my own quite lonely. I didn’t want private tours and private drivers and being in hotels by myself.Whether I made assumptions based on past experience, or whether that wasn’t clearly described in your tour notes, a bit of both, probably. I also found it very stressful not knowing about the pick-up until the day before and having to find my way to the meeting point in Palermo when I had been expecting to be picked up with other members of the group. That was all very disappointing for me. There was no-one to share the “Wow!” factor with. I give the 4 stars for the hotels and the guides, not for the organisation matters.

What people love about Sicily Tours

The tour was wonderful. We had great guides, delicious food, and enjoyed the beauty of Sicily.
I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!
We loved our Sicily tour!!! We had a wonderful guide, Luca who was helpful even beyond our time with him as we left Sicily and moved on to mainland Italy. The accommodations were good and the food delish! We will be using them again!

Cosmopolitan, exuberant, eclectic. Catania is a multicoloured universe, from the glittering whiteness of its Baroque stuccoes (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to the lava black of the Liotru , the elephant sculpted from basalt that greets us in Piazza Duomo in the heart of the city.

But we mustn’t waste time! Here are ten sights not to be missed in and around the city.

  • Palazzo Biscari

This is the city’s most important palazzo and a symbol of Catania’s Baroque architecture.

Following a devastating earthquake, the building was rebuilt by Ignazio Paternò Castello III, the fifth prince of Biscari, a great scholar, archaeologist and lover of the arts, who not only made it his home, but also established the first major Museum open to the public, containing his great archaeological collection.

It was here that the prince received Goethe during his European Grand Tour , who later described the magnificence of the collections and the palace in detail in his writings. History, charm and beauty all come to mind when describing the building.

The palazzo is accessed via a large gate on Via Museo Biscari , which leads to the central courtyard, adorned with a large double-ramp staircase. Its interiors include the rococo ballroom with its complex decoration of mirrors, stucco and frescoes.

Today, as well as being the home of the Biscari family, it is also the venue for cultural and prestigious events and, with prior booking , you can visit the palazzo and listen to stories of its past and its families, told by the descendant of the princes himself.

  • The Fish Market

Behind the cathedral in Catania, a tunnel created in the city walls built by Charles V houses the fish market ; it is partly covered and partly in the open air. A place where every day, under the big red tents and on the white marble stalls, the ritual of selling fish, meat and fruit has continued since ancient times.

The shouts of the vendors, the stalls with steaming roasted peppers and tripe sold to passers-by make it one of the city’s most emblematic landmarks , the ideal place in which to immerse yourself in Catania’s popular and fascinating culture. But also (and above all!) to immerse yourself in Sicilian street food !

  • Catania’s Historic Monastery San Benedetto in via Crociferi

A UNESCO heritage site in Catania, it is one of the city’s symbols, recognisable by the arch that opens onto Via Crociferi .

Via Crociferi a Catania – ph. Paolo Barone

The monumental monastic complex is now, after centuries of absolute and impenetrable seclusion, a historic and artistic site that offers visitors a cultural tour, a synthesis of an extraordinary combination of history, art and contemporaneity.

Observing a respectful consideration for the cloistered nuns who still live in the Monastery, visitors can enter with a guided tour to admire many magnificent works of art. These include the ancient 18th-century parlour, the set of Franco Zeffirelli’s film “ Storia di una capinera – ‘Sparrow’ in the English title “, based on the novel of the same name by Giovanni Verga; the Church of San Benedetto and its imposing entrance staircase, known as the Scalinata degli Angeli – Staiway of the Angels ; the Sicily Museum of Contemporary Art (MACS in its Italian acronym) , located in the Monastery’s smaller abbey.

  • The Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena

At a 10-minute walk from Catania Cathedral you will find the Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena , a jewel of late Sicilian baroque architecture and one of the largest Benedictine complexes in Europe.

The monastic building, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the Humanities Department of the University of Catania . It houses a Roman domus , cloisters and a splendid hanging garden.

The Monastery is a unique place that recounts the human and historical events of Mount Etna’s city , from antiquity to the present day. A daily preset itinerary is open to all, with extra activities comprising guided tours outside regular hours, theatre and music performances, children’s workshops, cookery courses, workshops and events.

  • Catania’s kiosks

Let’s stop at a cioscu (or better still “u’ciospu” in the local dialect) to pay homage to an ancient but enduring Catania tradition. These kiosks are identitary meeting places, a form of “popular institution” that encapsulates all of Catania’s history. They are refreshment and meeting points in the neighbourhoods, both by day and by night – a universal symbol of daily life in this city.

We find them in Piazza Roma , Piazza Cavour and Piazza della Borsa , to name but a few in the city centre, but the most famous are those in Piazza Umberto , a stone’s throw from the Fera o’ Luni , Catania’s market .

The history of kiosks dates back to the end of the 19th century, when circular wooden structures began to appear in the corners of the city in the shade of trees. From the window-like openings, the vendors offered passers-by “ acqua e zammù “, water with a few drops of aniseed extract.

Today, the kiosks have become cult places , nighttime haunts where you can end your evenings out on the town with a delicious refreshing drink from the kiosk, even in the middle of the night!

Ingredients and implements have always been the same: sugar, fruit, mixers, small glasses, measuring cups and presses for squeezing citrus fruits.

Today, natural plain water is mixed with sparkling water from the slopes of Mount Etna, syrups and soda. Catania’s “ cioscari ” compete to make their products more inviting, often producing syrups made with Sicilian citrus fruits to make mandarin and tamarind drinks, the famous “orzata”, or the famous “sciampagnino” (citronette with water and soda), and the “completo” (orzata, fresh lemon juice, aniseed and soda). The traditional drink is made from freshly squeezed lemons, soda water and a generous spoonful of salt: the effect is highly thirst-quenching and digestive.

  • Underground Catania

Catania’s wonders are not all bathed in sunlight. Mount Etna most certainly played its part, with its rivers of lava that over the centuries have repeatedly covered the signs of the City’s past, artefacts that remain slumbering beneath the chaos of the city.

These include the Achillian Baths and the Roman Amphitheatre , one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Italy, inferior only to the Flavian amphitheatre in Rome (the Colosseum) and that of Verona. Then there is the Church of S. Gaetano alle Grotte , whose dating is still a mystery, with its underground tunnels. Gaetano alle Grotte, whose dating is still a mystery, with its underground tunnels, was perhaps once used as a catacomb complex , and the body of St. Agatha is thought to have been buried there. The Amenano ingrottamento , the Roman Hypogeum , is also known as the “Square Hypogeum”. Other fascinating underground sites are the Gammazita Well with its fascinating legend, the Crypt and the wash-houses of S. Agata la Vetere, the City’s first church; Agata la Vetere, the city’s first cathedral, where the martyr’s breasts were severed; the Gladiators’ Baths at S.Agata al Carcere and the Bonajuto Chapel , a Byzantine monument set in the heart of Catania’s Baroque.

Catania sotterranea – ph. Paolo Barone

In short, under Catania’s “ basule “, layers of ash extend as they have done for ages, chronicles of the city’s thousand-year history, with its streets, churches, baths, palazzi and even road signs.

At numerous spots, you can descend into the depths, in whose darkness, far from indiscreet eyes, nuns and monks engaged in amorous affairs and bandits hid from justice.

  • The Festival of St. Agatha

The 3rd, 4th and 5th of February are the high point of the of St. Agatha commemoration event . The three days of worship are preceded by a month of intense preparations, during which Catania gathers with great faith and devotion around its Saint. But this is also the third most popular religious festival in the world in terms of participation of the faithful, after the Holy Week in Seville, Spain, and the Corpus Christi festival in Cuzco, Peru.

Counting the faithful and visitors, up to a million people visit the city every year.

Candelora Sant'Agata

Tipica Candelora per la Festa di Sant’Agata – ph. Paolo Barone

The procession retraces the sites of the martyrdom and the oldest roads in the city, with the parades featuring the “ Candelore “, monumental, richly decorated candlesticks, carried on the shoulders of the devotees in their typical white sack vestments, to the cry “ All ye faithful, all citizens, long live Saint Agatha “.

The spectacular fireworks remind Catania’s townspeople that Saint Agatha is always there to watch over Mount Etna’s fire .

The counters of all Catania’s pastry shops are full of sweets linked to the history of the virgin, patron saint of Catania: the “ Cassateddi di Sant’Aita “, also known as “ Minni di Sant’Aita “, and the “Olivette”. The former refer to the martyrdom and brutal severing of the girl’s breasts at the hands of the Roman emperor Quinziano for refusing his love and deciding to consecrate her life to the Christian faith.

The little olives, on the other hand, refer to the legend according to which the young girl, pursued by Quinziano’s guards, while stopping to rest and bending down to lace up a stocking, saw an olive tree growing out of nowhere that protected her from the guards’ view and gave her its fruit to feed herself.

  • The coastal villages built on lava rock

This is an ideal itinerary for those who want to enjoy an unusual experience and admire the scenic beauty of the Etna Ionian Riviera .

With their natural and historic points of interest close to the city, let’s explore the picturesque coastal villages near Catania.

From San Giovanni Li Cuti and its small port of Ognina to Acitrezza , passing through Acicastello and, in the Acireale area, from Capomulini to Santa Maria La Scala , passing through the splendid Timpa Nature Reserve with the evocative and silent Chiazzette and the hamlet of Santa Caterina , from you can enjoy splendid and evocative seascapes.

Acicastello – ph. Paolo Barone

And again from Scillichenti to Riposto , touching on the seaside villages of Stazzo , Pozzillo and Torre Archirafi : a fascinating journey along the Villages built on lava bedrock , enhanced and made unique by breathtaking views, sensations, points of interest, with scents and fragrances typical of our Mediterranean scrub.

Let’s spend a day on a deep-sea fishing boat with the fishermen, exploring the calm waters, the coastal environment and the secrets hidden in the depths of the sea. On these boat trips, we can enjoy those special bathing spots that can’t be reached from land, discovering small natural gems.

And, why not, we can enjoy freshly caught fish on board or ashore in one of the charming restaurants, rediscovering traditional local recipes.

  • Open-air cinema in summer: Catania’s arenas

On summer evenings, after a long day under the beach umbrella at Plaja beach, what could be better than an extra round of relaxation in these unusual down-town spots?

Films we may have missed during the winter are projected on large canvas screens in a jasmine-scented courtyards, with sound that is never perfect. But the vintage atmosphere will make the experience truly unique. We take our seats in one of the rows of blue chairs, strictly made of iron: luckily, the modest cost of admission also includes a cushion!

To finish, in true Catania style , let’s have a “gazzosa e semenza”.

As soon as you land on the runway of Catania’s Fontanarossa Airport , you can’t help but notice it: Mount Etna , Europe’s highest active volcano, situated between the Alcantara and Simeto rivers, towers over the whole of Sicily.

This extraordinary natural oasis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the “most emblematic and active volcanoes in the world”.

An exclusive destination for summer hikers visiting the active craters on the summit areas, in winter this volcano offers an amazing opportunity for snow sports, just a few kilometres from the sea and with a breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea.

Excursions on foot climb along the paths of the Etna Park , through woods and verdant orchards, up to the highest altitudes with fascinating views of lunar landscapes, age-old lava flows, caves and active fumaroles, revealing all the fascination of this area.

The best wine tours from Catania, Sicily – Mount Etna wine tastings

Catania is one of the most underrated Italian cities. Located in eastern Sicily, in the shadow of Mount Etna, its fate is sealed by volcanic eruptions. However, Catania’s proximity to Etna also translates to a unique soil. The volcano’s presence and taste forever mark the area’s wine production. Therefore, if you are exploring this side of Sicily, join one or more wine tours from Catania and discover the region’s smoky wines.

The Mount Etna eruptions enrich the soil in unique ways, and that’s why the area produces some of the best wines worldwide. Growing grapes and making wine -red and white- on the slopes of Mount Etna results in delicious wine that you can’t taste elsewhere in Europe. The Etna DOC is the oldest in Sicily and among the oldest in Italy. The red Etna Rosso is the most famous wine in the region, usually made of the Nerello Mascalese grape variety (80%) and up to 20% of Nerello Cappuccio grapes.

So, in this article, you will find the best wine tastings in Catania , together with info and prices. I preferred to split this article into two sections. The first section is dedicated to people willing to taste as much Sicilian wine as possible. That said, the sightseeing part is less present in these tours. On the other hand, if you are more into exploring the region and sipping an occasional glass of wine, the second section is more for you.

So, let’s start with the best Catania wine tastings and what to expect from them.

The best wine tours from Catania for wine lovers

As I stated above, in this section, you will find Catania wine tours dealing exclusively with wine tastings in various wineries. While you will see some of Sicily’s landscape, you probably won’t have much time to explore the area. The goal is to taste as much Etna wine as possible and get a complete overview of its unique taste.

The three best Etna wineries (Private tour)

For dedicated wine lovers, that’s the top Etna wine tasting tour  you can take in Sicily. Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Catania (available also from Messina) and drive you to three fantastic wineries in Etna . The three wine estates you’ll visit are family-run, and the Sicilian landscape will be out of your window. The owners will greet you at each winery, and the price includes free food tasting.

However, this wine tour is even more remarkable because you can taste unlimited wine . Specifically, you’ll taste four wines from every winery. Last but not least, after the tour’s end, your guide will drive you back to your hotel. Please keep in mind that this is a private tour: that said, while its price is slightly elevated, the tour will be just for you and your friends. If you can afford the cost, this is one of the best wine tours you can take in Catania.

Duration : ~7 hours .

Price : 185 euros .

How to book : Book here the 3 best Etna wineries private tour .

Wine Tasting, Lunch, and Oranges (Private tour)

This is another fantastic private tour that will bring you close to Sicily’s nature. After your tour guide picks you up from your Catania accommodation, they’ll drive you to a beautiful farm. This looks like a private park, and you’ll stroll through the orange plantation, where you’ll learn about the different kinds of citrus. Then, inside the villa, you’ll meet with a sommelier who’ll explain the wine-making process to you.

This is an estate owned for centuries by the same family, and at the tour’s end, you’ll taste their delicious wines together with a traditional Sicilian lunch. After this private tour finishes, the guide will bring you back to your hotel in Catania.

Despite its elevated price, it’s one of the best wine tours from Catania, and it’s a fantastic experience overall.

Duration : 4 hours .

Price : 350 euros .

How to book : Book here this fantastic private tour .

Mount Etna wine tour

If you’re on a tight budget on your journey to Catania but still like to taste some wine from Etna’s soil, there’s also a very affordable wine tour . However, please keep in mind that you’ll have to reach the estate independently. If you rent a car in Sicily, it’s easy to reach it; on the other hand, if you use public transport (or taxi), make sure to see your transportation options. See the exact location on the tour’s page.

So, in this winery visit, you’ll taste 4 to 7 different wines, and a sommelier will guide you through the estate’s cellars. There’s also a light lunch included, consisting of cheese, pork, and cannolo.

Duration : 1,5-2 hours .

Price : 41 euros for 4 wines / 57 for 7 wines .

How to book : Book the affordable tour here .

The best wine tours from Catania, Sicily, for explorers

The second section of this travel guide to the best wine-tasting tours from Catania is all about exploring the region. Of course, there are various stops for wine tasting, but here, wine is a nice extra for your day trip in Sicily. The focus is towns and villages, and there are only occasional stops for a glass of Sicilian wine. If you are more into exploring the region and having a glass here and there, this section will cover your travel needs.

Godfather private guided tour with wine-tasting

While it is an old cliche to associate Sicily exclusively with the Mafia, there’s one great tour in the region for movie lovers. If you are a fan of Coppola’s iconic Godfather movies , this tour from Catania is for you. Your guide will pick you up from your Catania hotel and, for the next 6 to 8 hours, will drive you to the movie’s iconic locations.

You will start from Savoca, where the iconic Bar Vitelli is, and continue to Santa Lucia church, where Michael Corleone married. After strolling through the streets of Savoca, you’ll stop for a glass of wine before continuing to Forza D’Agro and the Norman Castle with its stunning views. Your guide will share plenty of facts about the movie, and after the tour’s end, you can choose to have dinner at a local restaurant, including a delicious Sicilian wine tasting .

After a long day out and about, your guide will drive you back to your hotel in Catania. That’s a fantastic tour, and it’s also a private one.

Duration : 6-8 hours (the exact duration depends on whether you have dinner or not).

Price : 120-230 euros.

How to book : Book here the Godfather tour .

Home cooking with dinner and Etna wine

For this tour, you won’t have to leave Catania. However, this is one of the best things to do in Catania if you enjoy immersing in local cultures. Claudia, your host, opens her house in downtown Catania to show you how to cook a proper Sicilian meal . Using fresh and raw products from Sicily, you’ll learn how to prepare fish and vegetables bought from the local market.

The four-course meal you’ll prepare with Claudia will consist of tomatoes, eggplants, anchovies, various vegetables, and pannacotta. In addition, of course, the meal includes a tasting of Sicilian wines.

Duration : 3 hours.

Price : 95 euros.

How to book : Book here the home cooking and wine tour .

Full-day Mount Etna Wine Tour from Catania

If you’d like to combine a visit to Mount Etna and wine tasting , this is one of the best tours you can have in the region. Start your day early in the morning and head towards the iconic Rifugio Sapienza, Etna’s most famous shelter. Afterward, you’ll walk along natural paths and visit one of the volcano’s craters. Then, you can decide to stay in that area, which is at 2,000 meters, or alternatively book the high altitude option. The latter means you’ll have to ride a cable car, and a 4×4 vehicle will bring you up to 2,900 meters at Torre del Filosofo.

Then, together with your guide, you’ll explore a lava cave, and at the tour’s end, you’ll stop at a winery for tasting, including one sparkling and four still wines. A light meal is included, and afterward, the guide will drive you back to your accommodation in Catania.

Duration : 7 hours .

Price : 112 euros .

How to book : Book the full-day Etna tour .

Etna and Taormina wine tour (day trip)

Now, while this day trip from Catania follows an identical route to the one above, this tour has a bonus: it will bring you to the world-famous Taormina , the city that even Goethe fell in love with. Located on dramatic cliffs and enjoying fantastic views of the open sea, Taormina is a gem. Despite being compact in size, it’s one of the most beautiful towns you’ll see in Sicily.

While the exploration of Mount Etna and Taormina is at the heart of this tour, this doesn’t mean that there’s not some wine included. On the contrary, after a tiring day walking on Etna’s slopes and before strolling through Taormina’s streets, you’ll stop at a restaurant for a quick lunch and wine tasting. Then, after concluding your Taormina wine tour and spending time in the city, the tour guide will drive you back to Catania.

Duration : 8 hours .

Price : 98 euros .

How to book : Book the Etna and Taormina day trip .
