Christmas in Chicago: 17 Festive Things to Do This Season (Safely)

By Jessi Roti

Chicago Christmas

Quite famously, Chicagoans are known to handle icy temps with a certain aplomb, and Christmastime in Chicago is no exception. As soon as Thanksgiving hits, the lights come out and the city shows the old razzle-dazzle. Though the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused many highly anticipated events to go virtual this year, there’s still plenty to do to celebrate the merriest of seasons and this list will help you get started.

Christmas Around the World at the Museum of Science and Industry

Started in 1942 as a United Nations Day salute to Allied forces, the Christmas Around the World celebration at the Museum of Science and Industry began with a single tree decorated every day for 12 days to represent each of the countries who fought alongside the USA during World War II. Today, the holiday tradition has blossomed into 60 trees and displays exploring customs celebrated by families around the world. Surrounding the 45-foot-tall Grand Tree—which twinkles with 45,000 lights—are volunteer-decorated displays of more than 50 cultures, meticulously decked out with hand-made ornaments nodding to global customs.

Though the museum is closed to the public, you can explore the expansive exhibition virtually. The museum even resurrected its corresponding cookbook, which lists holiday recipes from the countries included in the show, for additional at-home fun.

Museum of Science and Industry Chicago

Holiday traditions in the Marshall Field’s Building

It’s been more than a decade since famed department store Marshall Field’s shuttered, but retailer Macy’s has stayed true to honoring the city’s hometown pride by keeping its historic traditions alive. This year, fans can experience them at home.

From November 27 through Christmas Eve, a brand new, interactive Santaland allows you to meet the elves, tour magical sites around the North Pole, and take part in some reindeer games before a video chat and selfie with the Man in Red himself. The ever-memorable window displays on historic State Street will still be unveiled for passersby to explore, and folks can visit the building's observation deck to admire the great 45-foot tree shimmering with 1,600 ornaments and 15,000 lights.

Outdoor activities at Millennium Park

Millennium Park , the city's front lawn, puts on a festive shine for the season. Between now and January 7, 2021, the city Christmas tree stands as a sentinel near Cloud Gate, a.k.a. "the Bean." While there’s no in-person tree lighting ceremony this year, Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events presented a 30-minute “Millennium Park at Home: Chicago Holidays” show on November 19 via its YouTube page, including musical performances featuring the Chicago Children’s Choir and Sones de Mexico Ensemble.

Steps from bustling Michigan Avenue shopping, nearby Maggie Daley Park is home to an epic skating ribbon. The only option for skating downtown, groups can reserve their time on the ice online—but no more than two people can skate together.

Family-friendly winter fun

The most wonderful time of the year is made more so by ZooLights, at the Lincoln Park Zoo . The typically free event costs $5 this year, but still invites families to wander the zoo after hours, where the landmark destination is decorated with 2.5 million lights. November 21 through January 3 stop by to take socially-distanced photos with Santa (only until December 23), sip some spiced wine, shop, and explore the one-of-a-kind light maze. On the nights of Nov. 24 and Dec. 9, 17, 21 and 29, admission is free.

The Jack Frost Winter Walk and Christmas Tree Farm on Goose Island is a clear rival to ZooLights for most expensive electric bill this season. Walk across two acres, strike a pose in front of festive scenes, go ice skating, and find your perfect tree. Jack’s is open through January 10.

The Chicago Cultural Center has been closed to the public since initial pandemic shutdowns in March, but its much-loved Dance-Along Nutcracker event—which encourages you to join in the ballet—will be streamed for free on Dec. 12 and 13. Then watch the ballet come to life during two virtual presentations from Ballet Chicago (tickets required).

With large-scale performances and gatherings still sidelined, WBEZ 91.5FM and Vocalo 91.1FM are tapping into a traditional form of entertainment—radio. The public stations are teaming up with the Goodman Theatre to air Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol—An Audio Play on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Marking its 43rd year as part of Chicago’s perennial holiday landscape, it will also stream on-demand, for free, December 1-31.

Christkindlmarket Chicago

The annual Christkindlmarket in the Loop

Small, artisan Christmas fairs and markets

The biggest holiday market in town is, of course, the Christkindlmarket —modeled after European Christmas markets —in the heart of the Loop. Instead of the artisanal village taking over Daley Plaza this year, Christkindlmarket is “Home for the Holidays.” Grab commemorative mugs, shop local vendors for hand-blown glass ornaments or carved trinkets, hand-knit scarves and mittens, all in the virtual marketplace.

One of a Kind Virtual Holiday Show, running through December 6, centralizes hundreds of independent artists and vendors, from fashion and accessories to products, and home goods and furniture.

The Buddy Shop, a new collaboration between the Public Media Institute and DCASE to provide opportunities to makers and artists across the city, is also open. Shoppers can visit online and browse curated collections of art, music, toys and games, self-care products, indie publications and stationery, and other one-of-a-kind, homegrown finds.

Pilsen's cocktail den Tack Room transforms for the holidays.

Holiday traditions in decked-out bars

Don’t skip Elf’d Up, a pop-up bar at Stretch Bar & Grill in Wrigleyville, running through mid-January. A full-throttled tribute to Will Ferrell’s turn in Elf , this high-energy bar is decorated from floor to ceiling with more than 1,000 elves of all shapes and sizes, a 10-foot Christmas tree, wreath chandeliers, and specific tributes to the movie, including figurines, wall quotes, Schylling Jester Jack-in-the-Boxes, and cutouts of Buddy the Elf and Miles Finch. Reservations required.

Off the Blue Line El train in trendy Logan Square, locals would typically swing by perennial favorites like Lost Lake for some stylish holiday digs. This year, find co-owner Shelby Allison and others at the bar’s pick-up window, slinging bottled cocktails. Enjoy naughty and nice blends such as the “...and a Parrot in a Palm Tree,” a fiery mix of reposado tequila, mezcal, pierre ferrand dry curacao, spiced coconut, and lime; as well as “Little Saint Nog,” “Bah Rumbug!” and “Jesus was a Capricorn.”

Winter staycations

The Godfrey Hotel has brought back its Winter Wonderland, transforming the year-round rooftop with clear-domed, heated igloos, plush furnishings, s’more kits, firepits, and hot cocktails. At LondonHouse Chicago , centrally located off Michigan Avenue and the Riverwalk, centrally located off Michigan Avenue and the Riverwalk, guests can also enjoy treats in their own personal igloo on Rudolph's Rooftop while overlooking the frozen river. If you stay at the historic Blackstone , steps from Grant Park , you can embark on a holiday scavenger hunt. Guest will receive a list of 125 activities—you don’t have to commit to them all—like skating in Maggie Daley Park, or taking a selfie at Cloud Gate, and if you complete 25 of the tasks, you’ll be awarded with drinks at the hotel’s Mercat a la Planxa bar.

Hello, I was just their on Saturday. I got re-directed due to the closing of the streets for the parade. I wish we had left earlier so the kids would have more time. Besides Winter Wonderland at Navy Pier, what else can we do (coming from as far as Indianapolis, IN) and what are some of the best hotels that are kid friendly. I spend most Christmas at the Renaissance and we had booked the Royal Sonata. We really want a hotel on the river with river view from our room.

Thank you, Holliday

Hello Holliday! Great questions! We have a Chicago events page you can visit at anytime to learn about what is taking place in Chi-town: https://www.tripster.com/travelguide/information/chicago/events/

10 ways to experience Christmas in Chicago

From santa’s commuter train to the best place to sip on glögg.

Meena Thiruvengadam

There’s more to Christmas in Chicago than the sparkling lights of Michigan Avenue and a majestic tree in Millennium Park . Chicago is a city that oozes holiday spirit from the department store windows downtown all the way to the suburbs. Whether sparkling lights, a German-style market, or a dance party in a decked-out botanical garden are on your Christmas list, this city is ready to make all of your holiday wishes come true.

See how the world celebrates Christmas

Christmas Around the World exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry

Head to the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park to experience an unforgettable Christmas around the world. This annual exhibit began with a single Christmas tree in 1942 and has since grown to include more than 50 trees representing holiday traditions from around the world. The centerpiece of this exhibit is a four-story-tall tree.

Experience a one-of-a-kind twist on It’s a Wonderful Life

Take your annual viewing of It’s a Wonderful Life up a notch by swapping the movie for a live, interactive 1940s-style radio broadcast version of the holiday classic. The American Blues Theater has been bringing the story of George Bailey to life every holiday season for more than 20 years. There may be no better way to experience this classic.

Get your Christkindlmarket mug

Christkindlmarket in Chicago

You don’t have to fly to Europe to experience an epic Christmas market. Just head to downtown Chicago where you’ll find Christkindlmarkt , the city’s German-style holiday market complete with gluhwein, pretzels, and collectible mugs. Each year, the market releases a new signature mug and welcomes dozens of artisans selling ornaments, warm weather essentials, and anything else you might need for a festive holiday. A smaller version of the market is also located outside Wrigley Field . If you’re looking for more winter festivals in Chicago , you can check out our guide .

Watch The Nutcracker on the Merchandise Mart

Christmas projection on Chicago's Merchandise Mart

You may have seen The Nutcracker before, but you’ve never seen it projected onto the 2.5-acre facade of an architectural icon. When it opened in 1930, the Merchandise Mart was the largest building in the world. It has since lost that title, but each holiday season it becomes an epic canvas for a showing of The Nutcracker . Art on the Mart—which creates the largest permanent digital art projections in the world—projects the Christmas classic each year. For the best views, head to the Riverwalk between Wells and Lake Streets.

Book the Swissotel’s Santa Suite

Nothing feels more like Christmas morning than waking up at the Swissotel ’s Santa Suite. This sprawling penthouse hotel suite is a whimsical holiday wonderland decorated with more than a dozen locally-themed Christmas trees. There are trees dedicated to the Cubs, White Sox, Bears, theater, Chicago’s world-class museums, luxury shopping destinations, and even the local transit system. The Holiday Penthouse package comes with room for six guests, a bottle of Moet, lots of holiday treats, a hot cocoa bar, and an unforgettable in-room breakfast. The experience will set you back more than $1,000 a night—but there are more affordable rooms with holiday cheer. Consider an elf-decorated room with welcome cake pops for under $350 a night or reserve yourself a spot for the hotel’s PJs and Pancakes with Santa experience, which will cost between $60 and $80 per person.

Ride the Santa Train

Santa Train in Chicago

Each year, the Chicago Transit Authority decks out one of its trains for the holidays. The Santa Train runs along several different routes and has a flat-bed train car set aside for a very special passenger and his reindeer. Check the CTA calendar for the Santa Train schedule , and don’t be surprised when you look up and see the man himself riding by on the train.

Stroll the Chicago Botanic Garden after dark

There’s nothing quite like a beautiful garden all lit up for the holidays, and the Chicago Botanic Garden is one of the best. Not sure where to start? Take a walk through the Winter Cathedral—an idyllic archway of lights—and be sure to stop at the zen garden.

Have yourself a Home Alone Holiday

Home Alone Suite at Graduate Evanston

Chicago provided the backdrop for this iconic John Hughes Christmas movie, and there may be no better American city to experience a Home Alone –themed holiday . What’s on the itinerary? See the McAllister family home in suburban Winnetka. Stay in the Home Alone Suite—a recreation of the McAllister parents’ bedroom— at the Graduate Hotel in Evanston. Or treat yourself to "Home Alone in Concert" by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Sip on glögg at Simon’s Tavern

If you prefer to sip on your mulled wine indoors, head north of downtown to Andersonville—an LGBTQ-friendly neighborhood on the northern edge of the city. Simon’s Tavern , which opened its doors in 1934, is best known for its Swedish glögg once the temperatures drop. There are few cozier places to bask in the glow of kitschy holiday decorations on a cold winter’s night than this Chicago dive bar.

Dance the night away At The Morton Arboretum

Electric Illumination at The Morton Arboretum

Why take a leisurely walk through a winter wonderland of lights when you could dance? Check out one of The Morton Arboretum ’s late-night trance and progressive house experiences for an especially unique way to enjoy its 50 acres of holiday lights long after dark.

Are you visiting Chicago at Christmas time? If so, you might be looking for things to do in Chicago at Christmas time.

I adore Chicago, and it’s definitely one of the most festive places you can visit during the Christmas season!

Spending Christmas in Chicago is wonderful, and you’ll be absolutely in your element if you love holiday festivities and all that goes along with the festive season!

After all, some of my favorite Christmas movies are set in Chicago (I’m looking at you, Home Alone!) so you just know Chicago is a city that ramps up the festivity.

Spending Christmas in Chicago is super special – and hopefully the suggestions on my list will give you plenty of ideas for what to do and where to go!

Christmas Around the World

  • Website: msichicago.org/explore/whats-here/exhibits/christmas-around-the-world/
  • Address : 5700 S DuSable Lk Shr Dr, Chicago, IL 60637, United States

First on my guide to things to do at Christmas time in Chicago, it’s Christmas Around the World .

Chicago museums are gorgeous at the best of times. However, they really take things to the next level during the festive season. If you want to experience the best of Christmas in Chicago, then you need to head to the Museum of Science and Industry.

This famous museum is home to the annual Christmas Around the World display, which shows off 50 incredible decorated trees. These trees all represent different country traditions, so you can learn more about the wonders of Christmas across the globe in one handy exhibition.

Be sure to take plenty of time to look at the Grand Tree; each year, this wonderous, nearly 50-foot-tall tree is decorated with thousands of twinkling lights. It’s truly a sight to behold, so don’t miss out.

Head to Millennium Park for the tree lighting

  • Website: https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/millennium_park.html
  • Address : 201 E Randolph St, Chicago, IL 60602, United States

One of my top things to do if you’re spending Christmas in Chicago is to watch the famous tree-lighting ceremony at Millennium Park.

The city’s largest tree stands (it comes in at over 50 feet!) near the famous Chicago Bean, and each year, Chicagoans flock to watch the ceremony.

There are usually performances and plenty of music during the tree lighting ceremony, so be sure to arrive with time to spare to ensure that you get a good vantage point. After you watch the ceremony, I highly recommend taking a gentle stroll around the park itself. It’ll be chilly, so wrap up warm!

If you miss the lighting ceremony – don’t worry! You can go and admit the tree any time after the tree it lit for the season.

40 Best Things To Do In Chicago This December

A round up of the best things to do in Chicago in December. From light-shows and ice skating rinks to festive pop-ups and holiday markets, nowhere does the holidays like Chicago!

Elliot McGowan

The autumn-winter transition has begun, and the Midwest’s icy winter is now at our doorstep. More importantly, though, festive time in Chicago is in full swing, and another year is drawing to a close.

Make no mistake: winters can be as beautiful as they are brutal, and despite the chilly weather, plenty is going on. We’ve compiled a list of the best things to do in Chicago in December —activities worthy of stepping outside to brave the Chicago chill and others you can do from the warmth of the indoors.

From light shows to holiday pop-ups , here are our best December-time activities in and around Chicago.

1. Sip Glühwein at Christkindlmarket

An image of the Christkindlemarket logo in Chicago hangs from one of the Christmas market booths

Chicago’s German-inspired annual holiday market, considered one of the best holiday markets in the world is one of the most popular Chicago traditions of the holiday season.

Both international and local vendors have flocked to help provide an authentic and atmospheric Christmas experience every year since it first came to the city in 1996. Now, Chicagoans and tourists alike can once again enjoy mulled wine, holiday snacks, and festive music at  three different locations in the Chicago area.

Christmas decorations at a Chicago pop-up experience

Each year, various bars and restaurants across Chicago transform their spaces and decorate themselves head to toe in an exorbitant amount of holiday decor.

Christmas in Chicago: 10+ Festive Things to Do In and Near the City

Cindy Richards

Chicago is magical at Christmastime. The city is a winter wonderland adorned with twinkling lights, soaring Christmas trees, bustling crowds and enough family-friendly holiday experiences to put even Scrooge into the holiday spirit.

Here are the ways my family has celebrated Christmas in Chicago — from the time I was a little girl and later with my own kids.

Read More: Top Places to Visit in December

1. Chicago’s Christmas Tree

The city’s Christmas tree stands along Michigan Avenue in Millennium Park, just waiting for visitors to come by and take a selfie, organize the kids for a Christmas card photo or simply stand and marvel at the beautiful lights.

Check the date for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Millennium Park in November. It draws thousands to the park.

SheBuysTravel Tip: It can be cold walking around the Loop at night in December. Book a room at the Fairmont Hotel across the street from Millenium Park. That makes it easy to go back and warm up when you need a break, or to tuck into one the Fairmont’s comfy beds for a long night’s slumber at the end of the evening.

2. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival and Parade

The  BMO Harris Magnificent Mile Lights Festival  is the centerpiece of Christmas in Chicago. It includes a parade down Michigan Avenue, fireworks over the Chicago River, beautiful floats, live performances and giant balloons. As the parade makes its way down the Magnificent Mile (that’s Chicago’s premier shopping district), it turns on the Christmas lights along the way, block by block.

It’s a magical event that has been blessed with reasonably warm weather the in past, but check the weather forecast before you go. It’s Chicago, which means it can be very, very cold!

SheBuysTravel Tip: Stay at a hotel on the Magnificent Mile and you might even be able to watch the parade from the comfort (and warmth) of your room. My favorite Mag Mile hotel is the InterContinental Chicago . The Chicago Marriott Downtown is another great option.

3. ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo

The charming free Lincoln Park Zoo dresses up for the holiday with 2.5 million lights from November 17, 2023, to January 7, 2024.

ZooLights is a ticketed event that is free on Mondays – but you still have to make a reservation. It feels as though even the animals are excited about Christmas as you walk among the giant 3D light displays, musical light shows, ice carvings and strolling carolers.

SheBuysTravel: My favorite hotel close to the zoo is the boutique Hotel Zachary near Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs. It’s an Uber ride away, but well worth it.

4. Light Up the Lake at Navy Pier

From late November through early January 2024, Chicago’s Navy Pier is home to  Light Up the Lake . This display of Christmas lights has one big advantage over most holiday lights show in Chicago: It’s indoors and heated!

Skating on the indoor rink is included in the admission price — bring your own skates or borrow a pair for free. A ride on Navy Pier’s 200-foot Centennial Ferris Wheel also is included in the ticket price. It’s a great way to get those iconic shots of the gorgeous Chicago skyline.

SheBuysTravel: Definitely stay at the Sable Hotel right on Navy Pier. The views of the Chicago skyline alone are worth the price!

5. Christkindlmarket Chicago

A holiday tradition since 1996,  Christkindlmarket  attracts vendors from all over the world who come to Chicago to sell German-inspired food, hot chocolate and one-of-a-kind holiday gifts. From handmade items like knit hats and cuckoo clocks, to foods like strudel and sausage, the sights and smells of the Christmas market are the stuff that Christmas dreams are made of.

Held November 17 through Christmas Eve at Daley Plaza, Christkindlmarket is rich in warm German tradition and flair. It is very crowded and busy here, especially in the evenings, so this may not be the best activity for little ones. There’s a second location in Wrigleyville, a north side neighborhood, and another in Aurora, a suburb of Chicago.

6. Ice Skating

Ice skating is one of the best things to do in Chicago in the winter, The big rink is the McCormick Tribune rink at Millennium Park, just below the Bean. There’s also skating at Maggie Daley Park, just across the BP Bridge. There, it’s a skating ribbon that snakes around the climbing walls.

Don’t know how to skate? Take a free ice skating lessons on the weekends. Skating is free if you bring your own skates. Rentals are available at both locations.

7. Christmas Around the World at the Museum of Science and Industry

My favorite Chicago museum is the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park. At the holidays, MSI hosts Christmas Around the World . The museum’s giant rotunda is transformed into a forest of perfectly decorated Christmas trees. With the 45-foot Grand Tree in the center, more than 50 trees and holiday displays represent different cultures and traditions from around the globe.

8. The Great Tree at Macy’s Walnut Room

Visiting Macy’s on State Street is a nostalgic and festive addition to your Christmas in Chicago experience. Start by admiring the gigantic holiday window displays outside of Macy’s before making your way into the department store to dine in the historic Walnut Room adorned by a giant 60-foot Christmas tree.

SheBuysTravel Tip: Make reservations before your visit or risk waiting in line for three hours or more on the day your visit.

9. Holiday Shopping

What is more festive than holiday shopping? Chicago’s Magnificent Mile is the place to find high-end shops like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Burberry and Neiman Marcus. It’s the Midwest’s equivalent to Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive or New York ’s 5th Avenue! Kid-friendly stops include American Girl Place.

Neighborhoods like Lincoln Square, Andersonville and Bucktown offer boutique finds for a truly one-of-a-kind gift.

10. Ride the CTA Holiday Train and Bus

Each year, the Chicago Transit Authority decks the halls of a train and a bus and sends it out to surprise riders in downtown Chicago and on all of the train lines and 15 bus lines.

On the train, Santa waves to riders from his sleigh on an open-air flatcar carrying his reindeer and decorated holiday trees. Each car of the train is wrapped with holiday images and thousands of twinkling lights outline the shape of the train and windows.

The 60-foot Holiday Bus plays holiday music and Santa Claus yells a jolly “Ho-ho-ho!” from the roof hatch of the bus.

Both the train and the bus run on a schedule  you can find here .

11. Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo

Brookfield is the bigger Chicago area zoo, located in the southwest suburb of Brookfield. At Christmas, the zoo shines with 2 miles of lights, a 41-foot-tall Christmas tree, a 600-foot Tunnel of Lights, an ice skating rink and a scavenger hunt to find the hidden gnomes.

Some of the animal houses are open during the lights festival, which makes it easy to duck inside and warm up. The festival begins on November 24 and runs on select nights through December 31.

12. Lightscape at Chicago Botanic Gardens

This  dazzling Christmas light show replaces Wonderland Express, which delighted my family for years. But the new show, complete with singing trees, is a feast for the eyes. It runs November 10 – January 7, 2024.

The Chicago Botanic Garden is in north suburban Glencoe and is most easily reached by car.

13. Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum

The 50 acres of the  Arboretum  are transformed into a spectacle of color, light and sound, including 150 colorful lanterns. Walk along a one-mile paved path to hear festive music and see the thousands of lights. Stop along the way to warm up by a fire and roast marshmallows for s’mores, or stop in one of the concession tents for a snack and beverage.

The Morton Arboretum is located in the western suburb of Lisle.

Top 6 Things To Do In Chicago During Christmas

by Chicago Traveler | Entertainment , Top Lists for Entertainment/Arts |

If anyone knows how to celebrate the holidays, it’s Midwesterners. More specifically, it’s Chicagoans. Every year during Chicago’s winter wonderland, visitors are drawn like magnets to the city’s festive energy. It seems everyone wants to visit Chicago during Christmas.

Millions of twinkling lights glow among the buildings, trees, and silhouettes of the downtown atmosphere. Animated window displays charm onlookers of all ages, and the frigid, icy air actually feels hospitable in the midst of holiday magic. And it is frigid, and icy, but oh so welcoming!

Thousands visit Chicago during Christmas and the other winter holidays, and they revel in the enchantment of the Windy City. What do they do? Where do they go? Here are some ideas.

Top Six Classic Chicago Holiday Experiences Worth Checking Out

#1 The Lights on the Mag Mile You can’t visit Chicago in December without basking in the glow of over a million tiny lights on the Magnificent Mile. It is simply breathtaking. Both the lights and the icy air will literally take your breath away.

#2 The Window displays at Macy’s For decades, Marshall Fields decked their halls (well, their windows) with elegant and charming animated displays. When the Macy’s name replaced Fields, they vowed not to replace the custom, thank goodness. You can try to get in to have lunch in the famed Walnut Room as well, in the shadows of the Great Tree, but the waiting list each day is longer than Santa’s naughty and nice list. For many folks, it is worth the wait to dine in the proximity of the huge, beautifully decorated Christmas tree.

#3 The Zoolights at Lincoln Park Zoo During the holiday season at Lincoln Park Zoo, you can take in the beautiful lights display, see Santa, decorate holiday cookies, create some holiday crafts, and enjoy the holiday cheer.

#4 Ice-skating at Millennium Park How nostalgic is that, to be skating in the midst of flying red and green scarves, under holly leaves on light posts, in the middle of a decorated city? It’s really touching back to the holiday traditions of years past.

#5 Drinking hot chocolate while walking around Daley Plaza Sip from your cup of chocolate indulgence, look at the amazing tree, sip again, look at the tree again’just do it.

#6 The Museum of Science and Industry’s Holiday Display The Museum of Science and Industry constructs an amazing and educational display each year detailing Christmas Around the World. They have over 50 decorated trees showcasing holiday traditions from around the globe.

Chicago offers an abundance of ambience and cheer for holiday visitors. If you are downtown, all you need to do is look around, and you will see that the festivity infuses the city.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with the RFID protection, as I do, these  RFID  sleeves  are the perfect solution.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external charging battery .

This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery  is  the exact one  I carry with me on all of my trips.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking Insta-worthy selfies when experiencing the Christmas lights in Chicago.

I never much believed in using packing cubes when traveling. That is until I tried them. Now I am hooked. These are the exact cubes I use to stay organized when I pack for a trip!

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for your adventures and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car. Then this  collapsible silicone foldable water bottle  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. . No matter the time of day or evening.

Brookfield Zoo Holiday Magic

Where to see twinkling Christmas lights in Chicago

Celebrate the holidays at these gorgeous light displays throughout Chicago and the suburbs.

Emma Krupp

Few sights jumpstart feelings of holiday cheer quite like sparkling Christmas lights—and lucky for us, the Chicago area has plenty of stunning options to choose from. Here in the city, take a stroll down Michigan Avenue or visit Lincoln Park Zoo's famed ZooLights installation, which is free on Mondays. You'll also find impressive lights downtown at the City of Chicago Christmas tree at Millennium Park, which is lit during an annual ceremony that's happening November 17 this year. Once you've had your fill of lights, head over to Christkindlmarket  and warm up with spiced glühwein and German-inspired fare. So discover some of the best things to do during Christmas in Chicago with our guide to the area's most beautiful holiday lights.

12 Best Events to Celebrate Christmas in Chicago

Everything kicks off in mid-November with the annual Chicago Christmas parade. The Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is a tree-lighting parade along Michigan Avenue. Grand Marshals Mickey and Minnie Mouse lead characters from Disney World, beautiful floats, and marching bands from along the route.

Once the tree is lit, the rest of the city rolls out the holiday finery. Looking for ways to get into the holiday spirit with the whole family? Here are some of the best holiday events in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

PLANNING A TRIP? DON’T MISS OUR FAVORITE CHICAGO HOTELS FOR FAMILIES!

1.  Skating and caroling at Millennium Park

The city’s Christmas tree spends the holiday season dazzling visitors in Millennium Park alongside the McCormick Tribune ice skating ri nk . Ice skating is free, so you can either bring your own skates or rent them at the rink.

It’s the perfect spot for taking in the Chicago architecture, enjoy live carolers, and visit the iconic “Bean” (officially the Cloud Gate sculpture). When you’re finished, enjoy food and drinks at the café or any of the restaurants on Michigan Avenue. There are so many family-friendly places to eat in Chicago !

Looking for more holiday activities? There’s also an ice-skating ribbon at Maggie Daley Park , adjacent to Millennium Park.

2. Lightscape at the Chicago Botanic Garden

Lightscape returns for another year at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The gardens come alive at night with over 750,000 lights decorating the trees and plants along lighted paths.

There are interactive lights, a tunnel of light, and a choir of singing trees. Some of our favorite displays include the luminous Winter Cathedral and a reimagined fire garden.

3. Christkindl Market – Chicago Christmas Market

Having explored multiple German Christmas markets, I can say the ChristkindlMarket in Chicago is about as authentic as it gets. There are stalls filled with ornaments, food, and cuckoo clocks throughout Daley Plaza.

The market includes vendors from all over, including Germany, Nepal, and Poland. Christkindl Market is free, but it can be very crowded on weekends. There are also locations in Wrigleyville and Aurora that are equally popular on weekends.

If you want to know what a real Christmas market is like, read our post about how to navigate the German Christmas Markets or read about the best Christmas markets in Europe .

4. The Joffrey Ballet’s Nutcracker

The Joffrey Ballet’s Nutcracker is a true Christmas in Chicago tradition. Families return year after year to see the amazing costumes, performances, and brilliant storytelling.

Over one hundred local children are cast as dancers in the performance, making it a true Chicago production. Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon has adapted this version set inside the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

5.  Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light at The Museum of Science and Industry

Celebrating eighty-one years, the Museum of Science and Industry Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light is one of our favorite family traditions. The museum is decorated with more than 50 trees and displays representing countries and traditions from around the world.

Each year a majestic 45-foot tree is the centerpiece of the exhibit (in the past, there have been Peanuts, Disney, and LEGO-themed trees).

Every half hour snow falls from the ceiling making the museum magical! On the weekends there are dance and music performances from around the world. This is definitely worth a visit during the holidays.

6. Afternoon tea or a holiday lunch in Chicago

There are places to enjoy holiday tea in Chicago, and what better way to celebrate with friends and loved ones than spending a special afternoon together?

Some of our favorite places for afternoon tea in Chicago include the Drake Hotel , The Peninsula , The Langham , and Russian Tea Time . All of them have something that makes them unique in our book.

Many families enjoy a holiday meal at the famous Walnut Room (a Chicago staple since 1907) inside Macy’s department store. Come here to celebrate a festive day on the town, with their beautiful Christmas tree and holiday windows!

7. Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum

Illumination returns to The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, about 35 minutes southwest of the city. For over a decade, this holiday event brings the Arboretum to life each night from mid-November through the first week of January.

Trees and plants are transformed with thousands of interactive dazzling LED lights. You’ll wander along a mile-long trail, while music from the Chicago Symphony provides the accompaniment. A favorite display is the Arboretum’s Grand Garden, leading to a spectacular laser-light finale.

Some nights feature live musical performances. Fire pits and warming tents along the way help keep visitors toasty on cold December evenings. Purchase tickets online before heading out.

8. Holiday Shows in Chicago

There are several live performances throughout the city during the holiday season, but these are a couple of our favorites. You can’t go wrong with any of these productions!

See A Christmas Carol at the Goodman Theatre for a family-friendly rendition of this holiday classic. Or take the kids to see the new Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas the Musical showing this season at the Cadillac Palace in the heart of Chicago’s theatre district.

For a special treat, the Music Box Theatre screens the “ Sound of Music ” with subtitles so the audience can sing along! There’s also a costume contest and a vocal warm-up led by the house organist. It’s fun for all ages.

And “ It’s A Wonderful Life ” is performed as a “live” 1940s radio broadcast, at the American Blues Theater. It comes complete with commercials, holiday carols, and telegrams from the audience read live on stage.

This is a truly interactive experience, and the audience is even invited to enjoy milk and cookies with the cast after the show. It is a unique production that shouldn’t be missed this holiday season.

9. Brookfield Zoo’s Holiday Magic or Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooLights

There are two main zoos in Chicago where families can see amazing Christmas light displays: the Brookfield Zoo and the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Brookfield Zoo’s Holiday Magic includes a holiday light show, animal encounters, ice skating, and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Zoo-goers can stroll along paths covered with more than 2 million LED twinkle lights. There’s also a 600-foot-long Tunnel of Lights with thousands of colored lights all synchronized to music.

The Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooLights features light shows, ice carving, animal encounters, ice skating, and visits with Santa Claus.

Lincoln Park Zoo charges $7 for general admission and they offer members-only and sensory-friendly nights. Brookfield Zoo charges admission, but there are discounts available for zoo members and they offer free admission for the military.

The zoo events can be crowded, so it’s best to choose a colder weeknight and dress warmly.

10. See some of the best Christmas lights in Chicago at the Lincolnwood Towers neighborhood

One of my favorite holiday traditions as a kid was piling in the car and driving around to see holiday lights in our neighborhood while the stereo played Christmas music.

The Edgebrook/Sauganash neighborhood essentially covers Pratt Avenue on the north, Edens Expressway on the east, Devon Avenue to the south, and Cicero Avenue on the west. Today, the neighborhood has taken holiday light displays to the next level, creating a neighborhood Christmas light experience like no other!

Grab some hot cocoa, crank up the Christmas music, and ride through the area, checking out the lights. It’s the perfect family event and no one will complain they’re cold.

11. Experience “Light Up the Lake” at Navy Pier

Light Up the Lake , an indoor, temperature-controlled experience returns to Navy Pier for another holiday season. It features large-scale light-sculpture displays with over 600,000 lights, a regulation-size Alpine ice rink, an authentic holiday beer garden, kiddie train rides, Santa’s Village, a gift market, and more.

Light Up the Lake will also offer sit-down dining with holiday-themed eats, signature cocktails, and seasonal brews. Grab-and-go meals and snacks are available too. Don’t miss this fun event!

12. Ride the CTA Holiday Train

A fun holiday tradition has been traveling around the Windy City since the 90s and its back this year: The CTA Holiday Train! Decked out in twinkle lights and festive decoration, this train brings holiday cheer to both commuters and onlookers.

And while you’ll catch the CTA Holiday Train running along different routes throughout the Chicago area from Thanksgiving till Christmas, it’s not your typical train ride. It’s a magical experience that captures the spirit of the season!

As the holiday train winds its way through the city, passengers can enjoy live music, costumed characters, and an appearance by Santa Claus himself.

In fact, visits with Santa this year are back this year! You can find specific dates for each line on the official CTA website . It’s a joyful journey that transforms a routine commute into a festive celebration, making it a must-see attraction for locals and visitors alike.
