Churaumi Aquarium

churaumi aquarium tour

The Churaumi Aquarium (C, Churaumi Suizokukan) is widely considered Japan's best aquarium . It is the main attraction of the Ocean Expo Park on the former grounds of the 1975 International Ocean Expo in northern Okinawa Honto . The aquarium was completely redesigned and reopened in 2002.

The highlight of a visit to the Churaumi Aquarium is the massive Kuroshio Tank , one of the largest in the world. The tank takes its name from the warm Kuroshio current which plays a large part in the variety of Okinawa's of marine life. The tank contains a wide variety of species, the most striking of which are the giant whale sharks and manta rays.

churaumi aquarium tour

The aquarium is spread out over three floors with the entrance on the third floor and the exit on the first floor. Directly after the entrance there is a pool where visitors can touch living starfish and seashells with their own hands. Next there is a tank with the world's first large scale exhibit of living coral.

The route through the aquarium then leads past the Kuroshio Tank, where visitors will likely want to spend quite a bit of time. Feeding shows are held twice daily. Located just beside the tank is a high definition movie theater about Okinawa's marine life.

churaumi aquarium tour

Past the Kuroshio Tank are a few more interesting tanks and displays including an area dedicated to sharks with live tiger sharks and bull sharks. Another area is dedicated to marine life in the extremely deeps waters of Okinawa and includes displays of bioluminescent fish.

Outside of the main aquarium building, there are a few outdoor pools near the waterfront where shows of dolphins, sea turtles and manatees can be viewed for free.

Getting there and around

The Churaumi Aquarium is part of the Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa Honto , about 90 kilometers from Naha .

By direct bus from Naha

The Okinawa Airport Shuttle, the Yanbaru Express and bus line 117 directly connect the airport and city center of Naha with the Churaumi Aquarium. The one way trip takes a little over two hours and costs 1900-2000 yen on the Okinawa Airport Shuttle and the Yanbaru Express and 2440-2550 yen on bus 117. There are 1-2 buses per hour. In central Naha, the Airport Shuttle and Yanbaru Express stop at the Prefectural Office (k, Kenchō Kitaguchi) while bus 117 stops at the Naha Bus Terminal. Discounted round trip tickets are available through Klook .

By bus from Nago

Most buses along the lines 65 and 66 connect Nago with the Kinen Kōen-mae (LOO) bus stop in front of the Ocean Expo Park (50 minutes, 900 yen one way, hourly). Note that a few buses run on a slightly different route that does not serve the aquarium.

By car , take the Okinawa Expressway from Naha all the way to its northern end near Nago (1040 yen one way) and then follow regular roads across the Motobu Peninsula to the Ocean Expo Park. In total, the journey takes about two hours one way (more during rush hours).

An aquarium where you can encounter Okinawa's seas

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is part of Ocean Expo Park and is considered one of the biggest and best aquariums in the world. Its tanks are massive enough to hold whale sharks.

Located on the coast of Motobu Peninsula, the aquarium was rebuilt in 2002 and is now home to 710 species of marine life.

  • Feeding times at the Kuroshio Sea tank at 9:30 a.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • The Deep Sea Experience Room, where you can see creatures who live at a depth of more than 200 meters in tanks that recreate the pressure, light and water temperatures deep-sea creatures need to survive
  • Outdoor dolphin shows (free of charge) five times a day

How to Get There

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (in Ocean Expo Park) is served by a number of bus routes. It takes about two and a half hours from Naha.

The Yanbaru Express Bus runs ten to eleven trips from Naha Airport and central Naha to the Ocean Expo Park. It is also possible to get there using local bus service, but it is not the most convenient route due to its infrequency in Nago.

By car, the journey also takes about two hours, though it can be considerably longer depending on traffic. Take the Okinawa Expressway from Naha to Kyoda in Nago, and then travel via the Motobu Peninsula to Ocean Expo Park.

Quick Facts

When you arrive at the entrance to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, you will be greeted by a monument of a whale shark, the largest fish species. Take a selfie with the beast before continuing to the main exhibits.

Get up close

As you enter the aquarium, visitors will find an aquarium that is the world's first large-scale breeding of live coral using an open system.

One of the most popular exhibits is the main tank. Known as the "Kuroshio Sea," the tank is so large that it can display the whale shark, which can measure up to 8.8 meters in length, and also accommodate manta rays and many species of rare fish.

churaumi aquarium tour

The water volume of the tank is 7,500 tons, and the thickness of its acrylic glass is 60 centimeters.

Feeding Time

Giant whale sharks seem like they would eat all the fish around them, but despite their size they are peaceful creatures that eat small plankton. Don't miss the feeding, which takes place three times a day in the Kuroshio Sea tank.

Manta rays are notoriously difficult to breed, but in 2007 the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium became the first aquarium in the world to successfully breed them in captivity. Currently, four manta rays can be seen in the large aquarium tank.

Other tanks in the aquarium include one that displays mainly sharks, and another that displays luminous creatures. There is also a splendid outdoor pool where dolphins, manatees, and sea turtles can be seen.

The aquarium is a facility located in Ocean Expo Park. Ocean Expo Park was built on the site of the Okinawa International Ocean Expo held in 1975. Stretching three kilometers along the coast, the large park includes the Oceanic Culture Museum, the Tropical and Subtropical Arboretum, the Tropical Dream Center botanical garden, and Emerald Beach.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The largest saltwater tank in japan.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is located at the western end of Motobu peninsula, on Honto, the Japanese tropical archipelago’s main island. With a 7,500m 3 seawater tank home to a whale shark and manta rays, it is one of the largest aquariums in the world. Inaugurated in 2002, it constitutes the major attraction of Ocean Expo Park, an exhibition site showcasing the abundance of the local wildlife.

Okinawa archipelago is renowned for fine sand beaches   🏖 and healthy cuisine, but it is also home to an extraordinarily varied marine wildlife , with rare species, and is therefore fragile . To comprehend the extent of this vulnerability, we recommend to directly dive into the turquoise sea of Okinawa and admire tropical fish and corals in their natural habitat. Many options are available to book an underwater diving session with a guide or to snorkel in shallow waters.

Those who prefer staying ashore can visit Churaumi, Japan’s largest aquarium located on Motobu peninsula, in the center of Okinawa’s main island Honto, at 90 kilometers north to Naha, the regional capital. Established in the Ocean Park Expo, which was the former site of the International Ocean Exposition, Okinawa 1975, the aquarium was inaugurated in 2002 to restore the destination’s touristic attractiveness.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, View on the Ocean Park Expo

Tropical fish, shark whale and manta rays

The visit course in the aquarium is divided into several sections, including:

  • An exhibition recreating Okinawa’s tropical sea bottom , with starfishes, corals and colorful little fishes,
  • An area dedicated to sharks , especially tiger sharks and bull sharks; and,
  • A part dedicated to deep sea creatures with a variety of rare and luminescent species.

Churaumi’s highlight is its huge water tank of 7,500m3 capacity named " Kuroshio Sea " after the warm ocean current flowing along the archipelago. Behind the large glass walls, large, majestic species such as the whale shark and the manta ray can be observed living in captivity. The view is impressive for children as well as for adults, from all points of view: at the foot of the glassed tank, sitting on the bleachers or nestled in an alcove to watch fish swimming above one’s head.

However, it is important to remember that to fill this large aquarium, the species are captured in the wild . There are even panels explaining how to catch a whale shark. On a side note, until 2021, there were 2 whale sharks in Churaumi, but sadly one died during the Coronavirus   🦠 pandemic and the establishment’s subsequent sanitary closure.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Whale shark mascots

Additional attractions on the seaside

Exiting the aquarium, the visit continues in the large Ocean Expo Park hugging the seaside and pleasantly facing the small volcanic island of Ie-jima . The green space is complemented with several facilities, such as: • An outdoor children playground , • Several food trucks for snacking, • Lush botanical gardens , and, • The reproduction of a traditional village .

Open-air water tank s dedicated to sea turtles , dolphins and manatees are also open to the public. The show is free, and it is possible to feed the animals for a fee. We do not recommend these attractions however for the negative image of animals confined in spaces too small for them they give.

A major attraction in Okinawa archipelago, Churaumi is also one of the largest aquariums in the world. On the other hand and despite their size, its installations do not seem to appropriately take into account the concepts of animal ethics and well-being for the species exhibited.

Overall rating

A good choice if you don't have a car.

This bus tour was a fun and convenient way to see parts of Okinawa we couldn’t reach without a car. It picked us up right at the hotel, and then we were just along for the ride! The guide did not speak English (as we ... knew), but she was very friendly and tried her best to help us. The audio guide was a bit mixed, but did provide some decent information. We decided to pay the extra 1000 yen for lunch, and it was actually really good! The aquarium was definitely the highlight, but the bridge was quite scenic and the pineapple park was very true to its name. Some of the stops (Dinoland?!) were pretty surreal, but that’s part of the fun.

Enjoyed day trip. Not enough time to see dolphine show.

No car? Limited Time? Like a good value? Then this is the tour for you!!!

Using Google Maps it was easy to find the meeting spot. Once we arrived we could easily see the buses parked out front by the sidewalk. While the tour guide and bus driver did not speak English, it was not a problem at ... all! Our tour guide was very kind, courteous and made sure that we understood where and what time we needed to be back at the bus and the bus was equipped with English audio which provided us with interesting information about the area as we rode from place to place. Just before the stop at Okashi Goten the tour guide will ask you if you would like to preorder a set lunch (Okinawa style soba with pork, I believe.) I was traveling with a vegetarian friend so we did not choose to preorder. Once we arrived we had plenty of time (40-45 min) to have our own lunch at the restaurant across the street because they were not too crowded or busy. If you are traveling with children or a large group, you may want to choose the preorder option as it will be ready and waiting for you when you arrive. Can't say enough about the Churaumi Aquarium! Could easily see how you could spend an entire day here. I didn't choose to watch the Dolphin Show, but if you do, just know that the show starts @3pm and you need to be back to the bus by 3:30-3:35. Plan accordingly because it is at least a 10-15 min walk from there back to the bus area. The last stop of the tour is Nago Pineapple Park. I knew that this tour did not include the fee for the Pineapple cart, but thought I would be able view the plantation on my own. That was not the case. With this particular tour you will NOT be able to view the pineapple plantations or the museum as stated in the "write up." You will be given a shopping only pass and ushered into the shopping area. If the Pineapple Park is on your "to do" list then choose one of the other tour options. While the Pineapple Park portion of this particular tour was a disappointment, I still think it is a great tour for the price!

If you visit Okinawa main island with kids, or you are simply fascinated by the lifeforms from the ocean, the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is a must-visit. It is the second-largest aquarium in the world and is part of the Ocean Expo Park located in the north-western part of main island Okinawa.

The main tank has a volume of 7,500 cubic meters of water being the largest glass screen in the world. It is 8.2 meters high by 22.5 meters long and a thickness of 60 centimeters.
