America’s Field Trip

The Contest

What Does America Mean to You?

In 2026, the United States will mark our Semiquincentennial: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Today’s young people are the leaders, innovators, and thinkers who will shape the next 250 years — and it’s important their voices are heard as we commemorate this historic milestone.

America’s Field Trip is a new contest that invites students across the country in grades 3–12 to be part of America’s 250th anniversary by sharing their perspectives on what America means to them — and earning the opportunity to participate in unforgettable field trip experiences at some of the nation’s most iconic historic and cultural landmarks.

Students may submit artwork, videos, or essays in response to the contest’s prompt: “What does America mean to you?”

An organization wants to take 75 of the nation’s school kids on the field trip of a lifetime; to a dozen of America’s most famous monuments and places as part of a contest to celebrate the United States’ quarter-millenarium.

The Statue of Liberty, Yellowstone National Park, the Library of Congress, and the Golden Gate Bridge are just some of the landmarks America’s school kids can see. All they have to do is answer the question “What does America mean to you?”

“America’s Field Trip puts young people at the heart of our efforts and offers an opportunity for students to receive unforgettable experiences at our nation’s landmarks,” said Rosie Rios, chair of America250, in comments to Fox News Digital.

“We want to hear from students across the country: What does America mean to YOU?” she said, adding that the chance to win includes “free travel, lodging, and access to unforgettable field trip experiences at select historical and cultural sites across the country,” for 75 students and their designated chaperons.

America250 is an entity charged by Congress with planning for the big event, and the contest/awards are funded by Bank of New York Mellon, the nation’s oldest banking institution.

The contest is open for the next 30 days for students of all grade levels, with requirements and standards changing per age group. Second-place students will receive $500.

  • University of Maryland

Whether you're looking for some alone time to relax and unwind or you are dreaming of taking your family on a trip they'll never forget,  winning a vacation is a great way to make the world affordable.

Yes, affordable, but not totally free.

Vacation sweepstakes can change lives and broaden horizons. For example, reader Charl wrote in to share her experience with winning a free trip to Egypt:

"I had never been out of North America, had never been on a plane that long," she wrote. "It's been nine months since we got back and there hasn't been a day where I didn't think about this experience. I really feel like it changed my life."

But there are some drawbacks to winning trips.

When You Win Trips, Are They Totally Free?

Some sweepers don't enter to win trips, because even when the vacation is free, it still comes at a cost. How is that possible? Even when the vacation itself is free, there are still expenses involved. Here are some of the hidden costs of free trips:

As with all sweepstakes prizes, you have to pay taxes on your prize to the IRS. If you win a physical prize like a car, you have options to help you make the prize affordable , like taking out a loan on the car or selling it outright. With trips, however, you don't end up with a physical prize that you can sell, so you have to pay the taxes out of pocket.

A good, rough rule of thumb is to estimate taxes at about a third of the prize value. So if you win a $9,000 trip, you can bet on paying about $3,000 out of pocket. That's a lot to pay for a "free" trip, but you'll likely get an experience you'll never forget. You need to decide if the price is worth it to you.

This is only a rough rule of thumb, and the real taxes you'd owe on a trip can vary significantly. For tax advice specific to your particular situation, consult a tax professional.

With the tax costs to consider, it's a good idea to be picky about the trip sweepstakes you choose to enter. If you're not excited enough about the trip for the taxes to be worth paying, you're probably just wasting your time.

One way to make trip giveaways more affordable is to look for giveaways that include cash as part of the prize. If the prize includes cash in addition to the trip, you could put part of that cash toward the taxes you'll owe.

Expenses On Your Trip

Most vacation prizes will cover your hotel stay and transportation to your destination. But what about other expenses? While you're away, you'll need to pay for meals, local transportation, activities, and souvenirs. If those things aren't included in the prize, you'll have to pay for them yourself... and they can add up quickly!

If you look for prizes that include spending cash, some of those expenses can be reduced or eliminated.

Tips and Gratuities

If you win a free cruise , you'll be expected to pay tips and gratuities — and those costs might not be included.

On most trips, you'll also be expected to pay additional gratuities: for housekeeping in hotels, for cab drivers, waiters at restaurants, and so on.

These costs aren't usually a deal breaker, but it is important to factor them in when you're planning your vacation budget.

Special Taxes on Vacation Prizes

Aside from declaring prizes as income on your taxes, you might also be responsible for travel-related taxes like port fees, hotel taxes, and more.

These are especially tricky because they're the only sweepstakes-related tax you might need to pay to the sponsor before you receive your prize. See which taxes do you pay on vacation prizes  for more information.

Time Missed at Work

If you work, taking time off might result in a loss of income, especially if you don't have paid vacation leave or if you're missing out on earning tips or commissions.

This is an important factor to consider before you enter vacation sweepstakes. If your workplace isn't flexible, you'd be better off spending your time entering different kinds of giveaways.

Watching Your Home While You're Gone

Depending on your circumstances, you might have some expenses involved in leaving your home for a while. Babysitting, pet sitting, or house sitting can be a heft added expense to your "free" getaway.

And what about just taking a cash option?

Do Sweepstakes Sponsors Have to Offer a Cash Option?

Although some sweepstakes do offer a cash option , they are the exception to the rule.

Unless it's stated in the rules, sponsors don't have to offer a cash option. and they usually don't. It's a myth that it's easy for the sponsoring company to give you the money rather than buy the trip for you. Many times, the sponsor has put together a trip prize package with the help of partner companies, rather than paying for the trip out of pocket.

For example, a hotel may have donated the room or an airline might offer free or discounted tickets in exchange for promotional consideration (aka, free advertising).

Even when that's not the case, the sponsor may have other reasons for not offering a cash option for a trip prize.

There's nothing wrong with politely asking if a cash option might be offered instead of the trip, but pushing any harder if the sponsor says no seems ungrateful, and probably won't get you anywhere. Haggling when the sponsor has already said no is one of the things I recommend you  don't do when you win a prize .

So if you can't take a trip you won, and the sponsor doesn't readily agree to a cash option, simply decline the prize. It's frustrating to  turn down a prize  you won, but it means that the trip prize will go to someone who can use it well. Maybe the good karma will improve your luck .

How Much Influence Do You Have Over the Details of a Trip Prize?

When you win a trip, the sponsor chooses what's included in the prize, like how long the trip will last and how many guests the winner can take. But can a winner have any influence over those details?

Some sponsors will work with you on making changes to the trip, especially if you're willing to pay for the extra costs yourself.

For example, extending a three-day trip to seven days or bringing your child with you on a prize trip might be fine, if the company sponsoring the sweepstakes hasn't already made prize arrangements and if you pay for the extra hotel nights and any difference in the flight costs.

Do You Have to Actually Go On the Trip?

So let's say that you don't really like to travel, but your daughter or your spouse would just love to go on a trip you run across. Should you enter, and just give away the prize if you win?

Generally, that's a bad idea. Trip prizes are usually not transferable, which means that you actually have to go on the trip if you win. So either bite the bullet and take the trip, or tell your loved ones about the giveaway so they can enter themselves.

Of course, these hidden costs don't mean that you should skip trip sweepstakes altogether. Just make sure that you consider what you're getting into before you enter. If the trip isn't worth the price, there are plenty of other types of sweepstakes to enter .

§ Tomorrow morning Tina must travel from Seoul to Daejeon to compete in the regional programming contest.

§ Since she is afraid of arriving late and being excluded from the contest, she is looking for the train which gets her to Daejeon as early as possible.

§ However, she dislikes getting to the station too early, so if there are several schedules with the same arrival time then she will choose the one with the latest departure time.

§ Tina asks you to help her with her problem. You are given a set of railroad schedules from which you must compute the train with the earliest arrival time and the fastest connection from one location to another.

§ Fortunately, is very experienced in changing trains and can do this instantaneously, i.e., in zero time!

§ Test Using 3 Different Data Sets (test cases).

§ Each schedule consists of three parts. The first part lists the names of all cities connected by the railroads. It starts with a number 1 < C < 100, followed by C lines containing city names. All names consist only of letters.

§ The second part describes all the trains running during a day. It starts with a number T < 100 followed by T train descriptions. Each of them consists of one line with a number ti < 100 and then ti more lines, each with a time and a city name, meaning that passengers can get on or off the train at that time at that city.

§ The final part consists of three lines: the first containing the earliest possible starting time, the second the name of the city where she starts, and the third with the destination city. The start and destination cities are always different.

§ If a connection exists, print the two lines containing zero padded timestamps and locations as shown in the example. Use blanks to achieve the indentation. If no connection exists on the same day (i.e., arrival before midnight), print a line containing “No connection”.

Politics latest: PM 'appalled' by police protest row; Truss backs Trump and Sunak to win elections

Former prime minister Liz Truss has told Sky News her downfall was because of "deep resistance within the establishment". Meanwhile, Labour leader Keir Starmer said the Tories have "lost any right" to call themselves patriotic. Listen to this week's Politics at Jack and Sam's podcast.

But before you go, here are the headlines:

  • Liz Truss has refused to apologise to homeowners for higher interest rates in an interview with Sky News;
  • The former prime minister also said she had changed her mind on "problematic" net zero legislation;
  • The Metropolitan Police chief is facing calls to quit over the force's handling of a recent pro-Palestinian protest;
  • He will meet Jewish groups after the force threatened to arrest an "openly Jewish" man;
  • Labour's shadow justice secretary told Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips the force have "not covered themselves in glory", but the Met chief's resignation is not "the way forward";
  • Reform UK leader Richard Tice has accused Rishi Sunak of not being a "real Conservative," telling Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips there will be a "realignment of the right";
  • A number of MPs are running the London Marathon today, including Chancellor Jeremy Hunt who is running the race for the third and "the last" time.

We'll be back from 6am with all the latest.

People voting in local elections in England on 2 May will need to provide photo ID.

It is the second year the requirement has been in place - but in 2023,  14,000 people couldn't cast their ballot because they didn't take ID to the polling booth.

There are 22 different types of ID you can use - and if you don't have any of them, you can register for a Voter Authority Certificate.

Here's everything you need to know to avoid being caught out:

We have been reporting today that there's a lengthy list of MPs taking part in the London Marathon today - with one MP running for the 18th time ( see post at 11.27am ).

But none so far have taken the title for fastest-ever MP to run the race from Matthew Parris.

In 1985, he ran the marathon in 2 hours, 32 minutes.

The Times columnist and former Conservative MP told Sky News he is "intensely proud, inordinately proud" at the achievement.

"I would almost think it is the thing of which I am most proud in my entire political career," he said.

"I had trained so intensely.

"Up hill, down dale - I would run into the House of Commons for a vote and run back after the vote."

He said he even got stopped by the police once running back from a vote.

"It was a better result than I could have expected, so I was very proud," he said.

A power-sharing agreement between the SNP and the Greens at Holyrood is under threat after the Scottish government ditched a key climate change target.

The Scottish Green Party has said a vote on the deal, to be held at a forthcoming extraordinary general meeting (EGM), would be binding.

The date of the assembly and the crunch ballot has yet to be announced.

There is unhappiness among Green Party members after the SNP announced the Scottish government was scrapping its commitment to cut emissions by 75% by 2030.

The Rainbow Greens, the party's LGBT wing, has also criticised the announcement, which came on the same day that the prescription of puberty blockers for new patients under the age of 18, at the gender identity service in Glasgow, would be paused.

The decision followed a landmark review of gender services for under-18s in England and Wales.

Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said he would be urging members to back the power-sharing agreement so the party could "put Green values into practice" in government.

Writing on X, he said "many" members had been calling for an EGM to discuss the future of the agreement.

But Mr Harvie said: "As part of the Scottish government, we're making a difference on a far bigger scale than ever before."

In case you missed Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, we have a recap of one of the interviews on the programme.

Richard Tice, the leader of Reform UK, claimed Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is "not a real Conservative".

He pointed to the high tax burden and even went as far as calling Mr Sunak a "socialist".

Read the full story below:

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is "appalled" by an exchange at a pro-Palestinian protest in which the Met Police threatened to arrest an "openly Jewish" man, a government source has told Sky News.

Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley is facing calls to resign after antisemitism campaigner Gideon Falter was threatened with arrest near the protest march in London ( see post at 08.36am ).

Mr Falter, the chief executive of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, said Jewish Londoners cannot have confidence in the Met under Sir Mark's leadership and accused the commissioner of "victim blaming".

Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho earlier told Sky News the incident was "completely wrong" and that "what happens next" with regard to Sir Mark was a "matter for the Labour London mayor" ( see post at 08.40am ).

Sky News understands that Sir Mark does still retain the confidence of London mayor Sadiq Khan (see post at 11.46am) .

By Adam Boulton , Sky News commentator

Liz Truss has much more in common with Donald Trump than just the first three letters of his surname.

Despite presenting themselves as "outsiders", both enjoyed substantial political careers and reached the top of their profession as prime minister of the UK and president of the United States respectively.

In both cases, their periods in power ended in ways that outraged their opponents and many in their own Conservative and Republican parties. Economic chaos brought on by her rash policies forced Truss out of office after just 49 days in 10 Downing Street.

Trump lost the 2020 election, refused to accept his defeat and praised the mob who stormed the Capitol in an attempt to keep him in the White House.

Many thought they were finished for good. But like those who had laughed at their ambitions earlier in their careers, the nay-sayers were wrong again. Both have been reprieved and continue to be respected as forces in their parties.

Conservative MP Mark Menzies has been suspended from the parliamentary party in light of allegations he abused local Tory party funds to pay off "bad people".

Mark Menzies strongly disputes the claims which also include accusations he used campaign funds to pay his personal medical bills.

On the Conservatives' investigation into the claims, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky News this week action was being taken "swiftly".

He added: "I think it is important to stress that the MP in question here denies the allegations and so on the basis of fairness and proper justice, I think it's important to mention that."

On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson is joined by political correspondent Darren McCaffrey to analyse how Westminster will cope with another scandal.

Plus, the Scottish government has come under fire for rowing back on its climate commitments.

Niall speaks to science correspondent Thomas Moore about the consequences of the government missing eight out of 12 of its annual climate commitments.

The head of the Met Police is to meet Jewish community leadership groups amid a row over the force threatening to arrest an "openly Jewish" man.

Sir Mark Rowley will meet representatives from the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Jewish Leadership Council and Community Security Trust (CST).

Confirming the meeting, the Board of Deputies of British Jews said they would be discussing this "serious issue".

Sir Mark is facing calls to resign after antisemitism campaigner Gideon Falter was threatened with arrest near a pro-Palestinian march in London ( see post at 08.36am ).

Campaign Against Antisemitism have told Sky News they are not attending the meeting.

Sky News understands the meeting is expected to take place on Thursday.

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.

With the local election campaign well under way, Labour is still sitting comfortably on a roughly 21-point lead, averaging at 43.6% in the polls, with the Tories on 23.1%.

In third is Reform UK on 12.3%, followed by the Lib Dems on 9.2%.

The Green Party stands at 6.5%, and the SNP on 3.1%.
