With one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities at its heart, the picturesque city of Oxford is a must-visit for its golden stone colleges and cloisters, museums and punts on the river. But its position just to the east of the Cotswolds also means you can use it as a base for exploring the region, with many destinations accessible on day trips from Oxford to Cotswolds.

Although the easiest way to get around the Cotswolds from Oxford is by car, it is also possible to explore by public transport , which saves having to hire a car or search for parking. But train and bus services don’t always run frequently or connect well, so you need to pick the right destination.

Oxford is on a direct train line which runs through the Cotswolds via Hanborough, Charlbury, Kingham and Moreton-in-Marsh. And there are also bus routes either from Oxford itself or connecting with train stations along that route, which opens up more day trip destinations.

We’ve chosen nine Cotswold towns and villages which are easy to reach by public transport on a day trip from Oxford. Getting there doesn’t involve coordinating multiple complex connections, and most take 90 minutes or less to reach, so you can easily get there and back in a day.

If your favourite spot isn’t on the list, we have also rounded up other destinations in the Cotswolds that you can get to from Oxford by public transport at the end of the post. But these have more complicated connections or limited services so may be better suited to longer trips.

1. blenheim palace.

The grand Baroque Blenheim Palace , close to the town of Woodstock, is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Marlborough and birthplace of Winston Churchill. It was built between 1705 and 1722 and is surrounded by 2000 acres of parkland and formal gardens designed by Capability Brown.

Visitors can explore the grounds and the lavish state rooms with their collections of art, tapestry and antiques. And if you travel by public transport you save 20% on the cost of entry – just use the code GREEN20 when you book online and show proof of travel when you arrive.

How to get there : Blenheim Palace is nine miles north of Oxford. Stagecoach buses S3 and S7 run daily from Oxford train station and city centre to Woodstock and take 30–40 minutes. Or you can take the train to Hanborough and catch the S7 bus to Woodstock in 10 minutes. Buses stop outside the palace gates and it’s then a 10-minute walk across the park to reach the entrance.

2. Chipping Norton

Chipping Norton – affectionately known as ‘Chippy’ to locals – is a historic wool town which has been holding markets since the 13th century. There’s still a market on Wednesdays as well as independent and antique shops to browse. And you can visit the wool church of St Mary the Virgin, learn about local history in the Chipping Norton Museum and swim in the lido in summer.

Or walkers could head out into the countryside around Chipping Norton on an 8-mile circular walk to the Rollright Stones , a group of Neolithic and Bronze Age stone monuments.

How to get there : Chipping Norton is 20 miles north of Oxford. The Stagecoach S3 bus from Oxford bus station to Chipping Norton runs daily and takes just over an hour.

The town of Burford sits on a hillside, with the High Street stretching from Burford Hill at the top with its picturesque Cotswold stone cottages and wide-reaching views, to the medieval arched bridge over the River Windrush at the bottom, passing shops, tearooms and historic houses.

Get an insight into Burford’s history at the Tolsey Building where medieval merchants once met, visit England’s oldest pharmacy Reavley’s, and take a look around St John the Baptist Church, where you can still see carvings made by prisoners held there during the English Civil War.

How to get there : Burford is 20 miles west of Oxford. The Stagecoach S2 bus runs every day and takes an hour to travel from Oxford bus station to Burford. It stops at the Oxford Road Layby on the edge of town, which is a 5–10 minute walk into the centre of Burford.

4. Minster Lovell

The small village of Minster Lovell in the Windrush Valley has pretty thatched cottages, the cosy Old Swan pub and the more upscale Minster Mill restaurant. But it’s best known for Minster Lovell Hall and Dovecote , a once-grand 15th-century manor house that’s now a crumbling riverside ruin. You can also see the tomb of the hall’s original owner William Lovell in St Kenelm’s Church.

How to get there : Minster Lovell is 16 miles west of Oxford. To get there, take the Stagecoach S2 bus from Oxford to Witney Market Square (40 minutes). Then change onto the Stagecoach 233 for the 9-minute journey to Minster Lovell, stopping by the White Hart pub on the B4047.

5. Northleach

Northleach was another important Cotswold wool town, as well as a stop on the coaching route between London and Gloucester. It’s home to the impressive Gothic Church of St Peter and St Paul, known as the ‘Cathedral of the Cotswolds’, as well as half-timbered 15th- and 16th-century buildings, and you can call into the Old Prison Kitchen & Café for lunch behind bars in a former prison.

How to get there : Northleach is 29 miles west of Oxford. The Stagecoach S2 bus runs daily from Oxford bus station to Northleach and takes 1 hour 15 minutes.

The peaceful Cotswold village of Kingham in the Evenlode Valley is a popular destination for foodies, with two well-renowned pubs – The Wild Rabbit and The Kingham Plough. It’s also an easy, 40-minute walk across farmland to the nearby Daylesford Estate, a celebrity favourite farm shop selling Instagram-worthy (and pricey) organic produce, which also has a restaurant and spa.

How to get there : Kingham is 24 miles northwest of Oxford. There’s a direct train line connecting Oxford to Kingham, which takes around 25 minutes.

7. Moreton-in-Marsh

Moreton-in-Marsh is home to the largest open-air street market in the Cotswolds, which takes places every Tuesday. Its High Street is lined with elegant 17th- and 18th-century buildings, including the Curfew Tower and The White Hart Royal Hotel where Charles I is said to have spent the night during the English Civil War. There’s also the Wellington Aviation Museum for RAF memorabilia.

Moreton is a great destination for garden lovers, with Batsford Arboretum and the Sezincote and Bourton House Cotswold gardens all within a few miles’ walking distance of the town.

How to get there : Moreton-in-Marsh is around 30 miles northwest of Oxford. It’s on the same direct train line as Kingham, taking 33 minutes to travel from Oxford to Moreton.

8. Stow-on-the-Wold

Historic Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest town in the Cotswolds (and it can get windy so pack a coat!). In its wool era heyday, up to 20,000 sheep used to change hands in Stow’s Market Square. But today you’re more likely to be shopping for art, antiques, gifts and homewares.

Look out for the stocks on the village green and the Yew Tree Door at St Edward’s Church, a wooden door studded with nails and surrounded by gnarled oak trees said to have inspired Tolkien for Lord of the Rings . And don’t miss a traditional afternoon at Huffkins or The Old Bakery.

How to get there : Stow-on-the-Wold is 30 miles northwest of Oxford. To get there, take a direct train from Oxford to Kingham (25 minutes), then catch the Pulhams 802 bus from Kingham train station to Sheep Street in Stow-on-the-Wold, which takes 15 minutes (excluding Sundays).

Or you could catch the train from Oxford to Moreton-in-Marsh (33 minutes), then take the Pulhams 801 bus to Stow in around 15 minutes (Sunday services only available May–September).

9. Bourton-on-the-Water

The last of our day trips from Oxford to Cotswolds is to one of the region’s most popular destinations – Bourton-on-the-Water . There’s lots to see and do in Bourton, including the Model Village, Cotswold Motoring Museum, Birdland Park and Gardens and the Dragonfly Maze. It also has some lovely pubs along the River Windrush and tasty sausage rolls from Bakery on the Water.

You can also combine Bourton with other nearby towns and villages on our walks to Upper and Lower Slaughter (5.4 miles circular) and Stow-on-the-Wold (4.2 miles one way).

How to get there : Bourton-on-the-Water is 34 miles northwest of Oxford. Take the train from Oxford to Moreton-in-Marsh (33 minutes), then the Pulhams 801 bus to Bourton-on-the-Water (27 minutes). You could also take the train to Kingham (25 minutes) then the Pulhams 802 bus to Bourton (40 minutes), but there are only a few services a day and none on Sundays.

• Painswick : Train from Oxford to Cheltenham or Stroud (with a change at Didcot Parkway), then Stagecoach 66 bus to Painswick .
• Tetbury : Train from Oxford to Kemble (with a change at Didcot Parkway), then Stagecoach 882 bus to Tetbury . Or train from Oxford to Stroud, then Stagecoach 69 bus to Tetbury.
• The Slaughters : Train from Oxford to Moreton-in-Marsh, then Pulhams 801 bus to Slaughter Pike followed by a 10-minute walk to Lower Slaughter (30 minutes to Upper Slaughter ).

Do double-check timetables as services and connections are limited, especially at weekends.

An Example Itiniterary

I suggest that the first town on our Cotswolds tour from Oxford should be Burford. It is a beautiful old town with its High street sloping from the High Wolds. A fine medieval three arched bridge crosses the River Windrush at the bottom of the hill.

Stow on the Wold

This would be our second stop. It is the highest of the Cotswold towns, standing 800 feet above sea level.

The vast market square testifies to the importance at the height of the Cotswold wool trade – when 20,000

sheep might be sold at one market.

Broadway Tower

This is the second highest point in the Cotswolds. The views from the edge of the Cotswolds escarpment are truly stunning. James Wyatt designed the Tower to resemble a mock Castle. It was built in 1799 for Lady Coventry so she could see it from her home at Croome Court.

The Morris Brown cafe at Broadway Tower is a great place to stop for a bite of lunch.

Chipping Campden

I thoroughly recommend travelling to Chipping Campden. The main street curves in a shallow arc lined with a succession of ancient houses each linked together. The 17th Century Market Hall is one of the highlights

The Slaughters

Maybe these villages are some of the most unspoilt in the Cotswolds. Both Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter have the river Eye running through them. The local attraction in Lower Slaughter is a converted flour mill. Here the large water wheel can still be seen – it’s an idylic spot!

Blenheim Castle has long been regarded as a pristine example of English Baroque architecture. With entry to the castle, you can tour many staterooms filled with both art and tapestries, as well as explore the gardens.

In this article, I chronicle four days driving through the countryside, stopping frequently to take in castles, gardens, country estates, fabulous food and drink, friendly folks, and more in this true area of natural beauty.

Sheep have provided fortunes from their wool and meat. In many towns, the church, stately homes, and commercial areas were funded by the sheep trade. There are still sheep in the area, but nothing like during earlier times when it fueled the local economies. Tourism is now the number one industry in The Cotswolds – after one visit, you’ll see why.

Owlpen Manor Estate

According to Fodor’s Britain Guide, “ Owlpen Manor could well rank as the loveliest place in England, …” Now owned and managed by Sir Nicholas and Lady Mander, this secluded estate is tucked deep in the woods and hills of The Cotswolds’ southwestern corner. The Tudor Manor House has been the focus of the estate for over 900 years, which includes several cottages, the Grist Mill, and other buildings extending through the valley along the Ewelme stream.

The Cyder House Restaurant is a lovely dining facility located at the center of the hamlet. Karin Mander’s new menu includes pheasant, venison, Mander’s native Swedish fish cuisine, and fresh produce from Owlpen’s Elizabethan vegetable and herb garden. Owlpen is a superb destination for weddings, anniversaries, or other special occasions. Secluded Cotwolds natural beauty at its best.

Movie fans may recognize Owlpen Manor as the setting for many scenes in the “The Phantom Thread.” It is a recent film starring Academy Award winner Daniel Day Lewis.

Cirencester

Half an hour east of Owlpen Manor will find you in Cirencester, the capital and largest city in the Cotswolds. This thriving town with ancient Roman origins is the home of a beautiful Abbey and grounds, an energetic city centre, a fascinating wool church, and wonderful museums, shops, and restaurants to explore. The medieval Church of St. John the Baptist dates back to 1115, and is one of the largest parish churches in the country.

The Fleece is a lovely historic hotel in city centre with just 28 rooms and 17th century charm. It’s the perfect place to stay for visiting the city of Cirencester and the surrounding countryside. Low beams, wool blankets, biscuits, and real milk for that perfect cup of tea are a few of the small touches that make The Fleece a great place to stay. It was also nice and convenient to have a first-class bar and restaurant at the hotel – wonderful food and staff.

One nearby gem is the village of Bibury, once described by William Morris as ‘the most beautiful village in the Cotswolds’, just a 15-minute drive from town.

The Wheatsheaf Inn

Almost entirely engulfed in a vigorous growth of Virginia Creeper, The Wheatsheaf Inn is an incredible find in the small town of Northleach near Ilmington. In addition to some of the best food in the area, The Wheatsheaf Inn also features 14 bespoke bedrooms, blending traditional coaching inn with modern upgrades.

Chef Peter has done a wonderful job with the menu. I especially enjoyed the flavorful Seared Cod Fillet with Grilled Asparagus and Wild Garlic Gremolata paired with an excellent Chilean Pinot Noir. Other specialties are Lamb, Fish and Chips, and their dry-aged steaks, including a Hereford Ribeye and the T-bone for two. For dessert, we finished off the evening with a delicious Dark Chocolate & Peanut Fondant with Salted Caramel Ice Cream.

Entering the front entrance of The Wheatsheaf, you would never know that a large eating area with gardens and seating for several hundred people were hidden behind the building. They even have a pizza oven! The backyard oasis is great when the weather is nice. Be sure to check for special events during the warmer months.

Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle is the quintessential British destination. This beautiful castle, chapel, and gardens are full of history and beauty. From kings and queens to civil war, Sudeley takes visitors back a thousand years through Britain’s intriguing and turbulent past. Historic figures including Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey, Queen Elizabeth I, Richard III, and King Charles I have all played a part in Sudeley’s story.

Hidcote Manor Gardens , near Chipping Campden in the northern sector of The Cotswolds, is one of the most important and influential gardens in Britain. Enjoy the majestic cedars, the fiery reds, the sapphire blues, and the myriad of other colors and shapes in the natural wonderland. For the active soul, visitors can even play a game of tennis with vintage wooden rackets, try out croquet on the Great Lawn, or take a hike on public footpaths through the surrounding countryside.

Noel Arms Hotel

The Noel Arms Hotel is steeped in history. As one of the oldest Cotswold inns, they even say that Charles II stayed here during the English Civil War. In fact, the four poster bed pictured here is rumored to be the very bed Charles slumbered in back in the 1600s. In the heart of Chipping Campden on High Street, with its outstanding bar and restaurant, the Noels Arms is the perfect place to enjoy the best of The Cotswolds.

Each room displays antique furnishings with simple but stylish decorations. Enjoy TV, tea, and coffee in one of the very comfortable rooms and updated bathrooms. The Noel Arms even has free on premise parking, a special perk for its city centre location. Arms’ Chef Indunil has been named Best Pub Curry Chef Award at the Great British Pub Food Awards on three occasions, so you don’t want to miss trying one of his curry dishes.

Tower Barn at Broadway Tower

The Tower Barn at Broadway Tower recently opened in a beautiful Cotswold stone barn a five minute walk from the tower. The Tower Barn offers light lunches and a nice selection of pastries, coffees, and teas. I enjoyed a hearty bowl of soup while my wife had an excellent salad. We ate inside, with a nice view of the patio and the countryside. The Barn also has a cute little shop with local goods, clothing, and other knick knacks.

The Broadway Tower itself was conceived and designed by renowned landscape designer Capability Brown and architect James Wyatt, the tower with gorgeous views of the Cotswolds countryside was completed in 1798. During its long, storied history, the tower has housed Sir Thomas Phillips, William Morris, and The Royal Observer Corps. They used the unique vantage point to track enemy planes over England during the world wars.

Howard Arms

First opened in Shakespeare’s time, Howard Arms is a well-known pub and restaurant, with a small eight bedroom bed and breakfast located in Ilmington. The award winning chef cooks up quality pub favorites, starters, mains, and puddings. We were lucky to be there on a Sunday. We very much enjoyed the special roast beef dinner served with roasted potatoes, Yorkshire Pudding, and a savory brown gravy.

Batsford Arboretum

Add Batsford Arboretum to the long list of outstanding gardens in Britain. Batsford is a 55-acre arboretum and botanical garden, just a couple of miles from Moreton-in-Marsh. The arboretum is home to Britain’s largest private collection of trees and shrubs, with around 2,900 specimens. Species include magnolia, oak, ash, bamboo, maple, cherry, and an assortment of other trees from around the world.

Chinese and Japanese practices have inspired them. Batsford even has large statues of Buddha and Foo Dog near the Rest House. For a nice snack or meal, The Garden Terrace Café offers home-baked food prepared daily using locally-sourced food wherever possible. Choices vary from soup and sandwiches, and meat, fish or vegetarian. They also has a nice variety of cakes and pastries for a snack or dessert.

Cotswold Distillery

The Brits do like their spirits, and The Cotswolds has one of the best distilleries around. Known for their excellent Gin and Whisky, The Cotswolds Distillery is new on the scene. But when they started in 2014, they vowed to do everything right from the beginning. Their award-winning Founders Choice Single Malt Whisky, for example, is aged exclusively in shaved, toasted and resharred American red oak wine barriques. This great attention to detail results in a fruity spirit that offers toffee, oak, red fruits, and a beautiful, deep color.

For their world class gin, Cotswolds Distillery takes nine carefully considered botanicals – juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, local lavender, bay leaf, hand-peeled fresh lime and pink grapefruit zest, cardamom and black peppercorn. Then, the concoction is distilled in a copper still. In addition, they do not remove the essential oils. The result is a rich, robust flavor, award-winning gin. Equal attention to detail is taken in producing their entire line of award winning whiskies and gins and more. 

Feldon Valley Golf Course

In 2013, the golf course in the beautiful Feldon Valley needed a makeover. After years of struggling from inadequate drainage and a lack of operating funds, the course had deteriorated. In 2013, a new owner bought the course and turned things around.

Drainage was improved dramatically, and extensive improvement plans for the course and facilities were developed and executed. With recent renovations to the clubhouse completed, lodging built, and a first class restaurant in place, the newly named Feldon Valley Golf Club has members and the community smiling again. 

Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace , designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, is one of the largest houses in England. It is the principal residence of the Dukes of Marlborough and was built between 1705 and 1722.  John Churchill was provided the land and some funding for his military triumphs at the Battle of Blenheim. The palace is also notable as being the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill , former Prime Minister of Britain.

We all know Bath is beautiful, but you don't need to fret that you're leaving it behind this morning. Why? Because where you're headed is just as stunning, with rich history and incredible architecture. After passing through North Wessex Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you arrive in Oxford.

She's an old lass, founded in the 9th century. But its her age that makes her beautiful. She's got a lot of memories worn into her roads and buildings. Did you know that she was largely protected during World War II? Hitler wanted to make Oxford the capital of England after defeating it. If that doesn't tell you how striking this city is, we don't know what will.

Here you have time to explore the precincts of the many colleges, climb to the vantage points to admire the skyline, or see the art and antiquities collections in the Ashmolean Museum.

Next you stop in Burford, the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’. This is a proud little market town. The main street is lined with all those quaint properties that you’ve dreamt of owning. You have time here to take in the local charm and hospitality; and if you’re hungry, you can try a traditional English ‘Afternoon Tea’.

Then, you make the short journey to Bibury. This place was described by William Morris as the prettiest village in England, and Henry Ford wanted to dismantle it and ship it back to the USA. You have time here to stroll to the famous and fairytale-like Arlington Row.

After a full day exploring the city of Oxford and the villages of the Cotswolds, you embark on the comfortable return journey to Bath.

This route may be reversed on some occasions .

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.
