Daocheng Travel Guide - How to Plan a Trip to Daocheng

In Tibetan, Daocheng means "the open land in the mouth of a valley". Daocheng is located in the south of Garze Tibetan Prefecture, around 800 kilometers from Chengdu.

Daocheng has long enjoyed great fame as the "last Shangri-La" due to its breathtaking natural scenery. It is also the home of many endangered species such as long-tailed leaf monkeys, golden monkeys, white-lipped deer, red deer, water deer, argali, and antelope. These animals all enjoy their lives in this vast beautiful land, untouched by humans.

What to see in Daocheng

Daocheng, sitting at an average elevation of 3800 meters, is full of alpine views of expansive blue sky, cold rivers and lakes, broad grasslands, and snowcapped mountains.

Yading National Reserve is one of the most famous places near Daocheng and is great for eco-travel. This reserve is famously known as the "last pure land on our blue planet". Yading National Reserve is about a 2-hour drive from Daocheng county.

Yading National Reserve—The Last Shangri-La

Yading National Reserve, located at the southern edge of Daocheng County, is considered to be the most sacred place in western Sichuan by Tibetan people. It is famous for its unique ecological environment and spiritual significance.

The Three Mountains of God, Gongga Chonggu Temple, Luorong Pasture, the pure lakes, and Yading Tibetan Village are the must-see highlights of Yading. You can learn more about Yading here.

Usually, it takes around 2 days to visit the reserve. On the first day, you can take the longer route tour and then take the short-route tour on the other. Shuttle buses and electric cars are available in the reserve for convenient transportation.

During the long-route tour of Yading, you will see two sacred snow-clad mountains (Mt. Jambeyang and Mt. Chanadorje), the Luorong Cattle Farm at an altitude of 4100 m (13450 ft), the Five Color Lake, and the Milk Lake located at an altitude of 4300 m（14110 ft).

During the short-route tour, you will see the Pearl Lake, which sits at an altitude of 4060 m (13450ft), and the holy mountain Chenrezig.

Rewu Temple—the Oldest Sakya Sect Temple

The Rewu Temple is located about 10 kilometers from Daocheng County. Built in the Ming Dynasty, it is the oldest Sakya sect temple. Sakya is one of the important sects of Tibetan Buddhism. The Rewu Temple is home to precious cultural relics such as Gold Thangka Paintings, Buddha statues, and Tibetan scriptures.

Haizi Mountain Scenic Area--The Largest Relic of the Ancient Ice Age

The Haizi Mountain Scenic Area is situated between Daocheng and Litang County and sits at an average elevation of 4500 meters. It is the largest ancient ice cap in the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau. The most unique part of the landscape of this area is the thousands of lakes containing a number of big and small stones that glittering in the translucent waters. Xingyicuo Lake is the largest mountain lake in the Haizi Mountain Scenic Area and it is considered to be a holy lake in Tibetan culture.

Best Time to Go

The best months to visit Daocheng are from April to May and September to October. Daocheng County is in the subtropical climate zone. Affected by the complex terrain of the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau, it has the characteristics of a high elevation plateau type climate and continental climate.

Autumn (September and October) is the most strikingly beautiful season of the year in Daocheng. The red grasslands and yellow poplar forests make people feel like they are surrounded by the sea of color. The snowcapped mountains are also more unpredictable under the blue sky and white clouds.

Tips: The temperature during autumn is between 5℃ and 20℃. The temperature difference between day and night is often quite big and you should expect nights to be cold. Please bring warm clothes like down jackets, gloves, and a hat with you.

Spring is always late in Daocheng and doesn't start until April. During this time, flowers bloom all over the mountains and along the roads. The holy mountains look more spectacular and brighter in this season.

How to get to Daocheng

Daocheng is a small culturally Tibetan county and transportation in this area is not as convenient as it is in big cities like Chengdu. However, Daocheng does have an airport and it is the highest altitude civil airport in China. You can also travel to Daocheng by long distance bus or you can take our private transfer.

Daocheng Yading Airport

Opened in 2013, Daocheng Yading Airport is 49 kilometers away from Daocheng county, 122 kilometers from Riwa (Shangri La town), and 159 kilometers from Yading National Reserve. With an altitude of 4410 meters, it is the highest civil airport in the world and was built to accommodate the nearby tourist area.

An airport shuttle bus is available from the airport to Yading National Reserve. It takes about 2.5 hours and the cost is around CNY 50.

There are direct flights from Chengdu, Xian, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Luzhou to Daocheng.

How to get to Daocheng from Chengdu

Chengdu is a popular starting point for journeys to Daocheng. You can travel from Chengdu to Daocheng by private car, air, or long-distance bus.

By Private Car

Traveling by private car is a common way to get from Chengdu to Daocheng. We always recommend that our guests travel in this way. The distance between Chengdu and Daocheng is about 760km and takes about 13-14 hours.

We suggest you stop at Xinduqiao on your way there. Xinduqiao , which is a renowned paradise for photographers, is about 410 kilometers from Chengdu. Here you can see the beautiful countryside scenery along the highway. You will also get incredible sweeping views of Erlang Mountain and go through the Erlangshan Tunnel. This mountain tunnel is the longest one in China with a length of 4,176 meters.

Then, you will visit the Luding Bridge in Luding County and pass by Zheduo Mountain and the city of Kangding.

The journey from Xinduqiao to Daocheng is about 350km and takes 7 hours. You can also visit the Haizi Mountain Scenic Area, Litang Grassland, and Litang Temple on the way.

Taking a flight is the most convenient way to travel from Chengdu to Daocheng. There are 4 flights between Chengdu and Daocheng every day. All the fights depart in the morning between 6:20 am and 10:50 am. It is a one-hour trip. Daocheng Yading airport is about 2.5 hour's drive from the Yading National Reserve.

By Long Distance Bus

To save money, you can also take the long-distance bus from Chengdu to Daocheng. The bus leaves from Chengdu Tourist Bus Center and ends at Daocheng Bus Station. It takes around 14 hours from 6:30 am to 8: 15 pm with 4-5 rest stops. Only one bus is available every day.

How to get to Daocheng Yading from Lijiang

There is no direct bus or flight from Lijiang to Daocheng, but you can make this journey on China Highlight's private transfer. On the drive, you will stop at Lugu Lake or Shangri-La.

Driving from Lijiang to Lugu Lake to Yading

From Lijiang , it is about 195 km to Lugu Lake and takes around 4 hours. Then, from Lugu Lake it is about 370 km to Yading and takes around 10 hours. The road between Lugu Lake and Yading was opened in 2019 and travelers can go directly to Yading by private transfer without passing Daocheng. Daocheng is around a 2-hour drive from Yading Scenic Area. One part of this road is so narrow that only one car can pass through at a time. You will see some amazing natural scenery on the way.

Driving from Lijiang to Shangri-La to Daocheng

From Lijiang, it is about a 4-hour drive to Shangri-la. The distance between Shangri-La and Daocheng County is about 308km and takes around 8 hours by car.

A long-distance bus is also available from Shangri-La to Daocheng. It departs at 7:30 am every day and takes around 11 hours.

Where to stay in Daocheng

Daocheng is a beautiful place to visit, but you may have trouble deciding where to stay there. There are three areas for you to choose from: Riwa, Yading Village, and Daocheng County.

Staying in Riwa

Riwa is also called Shangri-la Town and is located between Daocheng and Yading. From here it is about a 10-minute drive to Yading. We always recommend staying in Riwa over the other two choices because it is the most convenient.

Advantages:

• The area is located at the lowest altitude out of the three (2800 meters) and is suitable for travelers who are on the plateau for the first time!
• The accommodation condition is better than that in Yading Village

Disadvantages

• Few places for shopping
• About 2 hours from the airport

Staying in Yading Village

Yading village is in the Yading National Reserve. From the reserve, you can take the scenic shuttle bus to the village. This area is full of youth hostels.

• About a 10-minute drive to the main attractions
• Beautiful environment
• Located at a high altitude (3700 meters) which will increase the risk of altitude sickness.
• Tibetan style houses with simple facilities
• No choice of restaurants and shopping
• Booking is difficult in the high season and the prices are always high.

Staying in Daocheng County

Daocheng County is a 2 hour's drive from its most important attraction, Yading National Reserve.

• Hotel choices vary from star hotels to small inns and homestays
• More choices of restaurants and shopping areas
• About 50 minutes from the airport
• Located at a high altitude of around 3750 meters which will increase the chances of altitude sickness.
• Far from Yading National Reserve

What to Eat in Daocheng

Daocheng belongs to Kangba Tibetan Cultural Area and here you can try some authentic Tibetan food such as Zanba, butter tea, beef and mutton, and highland barley wine and yogurt.

Zanba is the staple daily food of Tibetan people. To make Zanba, dried and fried barley is ground into a fine flour. To eat it, you should mix some butter tea with the Zanba and make it into a little ball. This meal is very simple and does not require heat to cook.

Butter tea is a daily drink for Tibetan people. It is made from a mixture of butter and strong tea. It has many health benefits such as curing high altitude symptoms, preventing your lips from cracking due to dry weather, and warms the body. Tibetan people always welcome their guests with butter tea.

There are some cultural rules that Tibetan people have for drinking this tea. Firstly, it cannot be finished in one sip. Secondly, the host should always refill the tea for their guests so the guests' tea bowls are always full.

Highland Barley Wine

Highland barley wine, which is called "Qiang" in Tibetan, is made from barley which is a major crop produced in Tibet. This is the favorite drink of Tibetan people and is indispensable during festivals, weddings, giving birth to children, and greeting relatives and friends. Highland barley wine is yellow and tastes sweet and acidic. Another nickname for the drink is "Tibetan beer".

How to Deal with Altitude Sickness

Daocheng is located in a high-altitude area and there is a chance that you may get altitude sickness. Here are some tips for preventing altitude sickness.

• Don't be too scared of the sickness. Most people will be ok with adequate preparation and knowledge.
• Walk and move slowly even if you feel energetic.
• Taking altitude sickness medicine before departure is recommended.
• Prepare some medicine according to your doctor's suggestions. Also, vitamin B and C can make you feel better sooner.
• Do not drink alcohol while at a high elevation

Recommended 5-Day Daocheng and Yading Tour

Day 1: Drive from Chengdu to Xinduqiao. You will enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of green valleys, clear rivers, rolling mountains, and also visit Luding Bridge.

Day 2: Xinduqiao to Daocheng to Riwa. Visit the Haizi Mountain Scenic Area and Litang Grassland.

Day 3: Stay another night in Riwa. Take the long route of the Yading Nature Reserve.

Daocheng Yading Scenic Area is located in Yading Village, Shangri-La Town, Daocheng County, Sichuan Province. On this land known as the “Last Shangri-La”, you can see snow mountains, glaciers, canyons, forests and lakes, and you can see that they are not contaminated by the world. The beautiful scenery can also enjoy the unique cultural style. The most amazing thing is that the scenery seen in different seasons is not the same, it is not interesting.

1. Daocheng County

Riverside: Just walk from Daocheng County, the scenery is beautiful along the way, and there is no charge.

Riverside and Salad

The riverside is near the county town and is located between the villages of Sangdui (north) and Sera (south). The idyllic scenery beside the highway makes people forget about it. The most famous. Sera Village is a gathering place for Tibetans. If you are fortunate to be invited to eat, drink and have fun in a hospitable Tibetan home, it is a big blessing. Choose to shoot the idyllic scenery of the riverside suitable for morning and night. When the light is slanted, if there is cooking smoke or mist, it is even more beautiful. The poplar trees on the river near the mountain are often covered by a beam of skylight. Pay attention to looking for an open location, and pay attention to the direction of the nearby light source and the height of the mountain to prevent the sunrise from being delayed or the sunset from being too early due to the high mountain. In terms of timing, since it is close to the county seat, you can master it yourself.

Sangdui Red Caotan: To the north of Daocheng County, there is no entrance fee.

Red grass is a wetland the size of a football field. It has a strong seasonality and a short time. It can only be seen for more than ten days. · Every year from the end of September to the beginning of October, clusters of water plants are lit like red, like a fire, attracting countless pedestrians on the Sichuan-Tibet line to stop. · It is best to shoot the red grass beach when there is sunlight, the color will be more gorgeous and more layered; if it is sunny after rain, the effect is best.

2. Daocheng Yading Scenic Area

Chonggu Temple

The Chonggu Temple at an altitude of 3880 meters is located at the foot of Xiannairi Snow Peak. The monastery has been severely damaged, and only a broken wall remains. There is a two-story house near the old temple, and a lama is responsible for the occupancy of passing travelers (now it is difficult to live in due to the regulations of the scenic spot) and the protection of the surrounding ecological environment. The first floor is the guest room and the lama’s room, and the second floor is the Jingtang. Visitors cannot go to the second floor. Every morning and afternoon the lama incenses and recites the chanting. Whenever the sound of chanting and chanting echoes in the silent valley, it makes the place more sacred and mysterious.

2. Luorong cattle farm: backed by Sanshen Mountain, it is an excellent place to watch the snowy mountains. A large area of green grassland is pastured by herdsmen. Tips: From Luorong cattle farm to the milk sea is the only way, but the road is not easy to go, you can choose to rent a horse in the past, and return 500 CNY.

Luorong cattle farm is located in Sichuan province. Luorong cattle farm is surrounded by three “Song Gongbu” god mountains, the Gongga river shuttles from the pasture, the forest streams gurgling, and the pasture cabins complement each other, forming an original and charming picture. The scenery makes people enter the realm of return to simplicity. Luorong cattle farm is one of the most famous places to stay in the scenic area of Aden. It is 4150 meters above sea level. It is a mountain pasture grazed by nearby villagers. Herds of cattle and sheep enjoy abundant sunshine, green grassland and pure lake water. In May, the grass flies and the eagle flies, the wind blows the grass, and the yak is low, and it is backed by the three gods, Xiannai, Yangmaiyong, and Xianuoduoji. It is the best place to watch the three snowy mountains. Travelers who travel long distances can choose to camp here or stay in their own tents. Snow peaks, forests, pastures, streams, lakes, waterfalls, and pasture cabins are in harmony.

3. Sanhaizi: Sanhaizi refers to the sea of milk, the sea of pearls, and the sea of five colors. The three Haizis are hidden in the snowy mountains and sit on the plateau. They are very clear and beautiful. The milk sea is blue and clear, and there is a circle of milky white around it, which is very wonderful. The Pearl Sea is an excellent place to view Xian Nai Ri, and you can see the landscape of the God Mountain reflected on the water. The five-color sea has a wonderful legend that reflects five colors in the sun.

Located in the depression at the foot of Yongshen Mountain in Yangmai, Milk Milk Sea is an ancient glacial lake with a small area like water droplets. · It is surrounded by snowy mountains, the lake is clear and blue, and the lake is surrounded by a circle of milky white, so it is called the sea of milk. The depth of the lake water is different, and the near shore is slightly black due to the precipitation of long-term plants at the bottom of the lake. · Standing here and looking back at Shenshan, it is close at hand, the clouds rise on the mountain, the unused gravel is all over, very desolate.

· Pearl Sea is called “Dramaracuo” in Tibetan, and it is a sea child formed by the melting snow of Xian Nairi. The pearl sea in the dense forest is like an emerald inlaid on the throne of the lotus, the blue waves are rippling, the sparkling waves reveal the infinite beauty. · The rhododendrons in the spring are splendid and blooming, and the autumn forest is full, reflecting the colorful world, which is dazzling.

Five-color sea

The five-color Hai Tibetan language is called Mudicuo and is located between Xian Nairi and Yang Maiyong. · It is named after the colorful light refracted under the sunlight, which is quite spectacular. · At an altitude of 4500 meters, after a steep slope on the right side of the Milky Sea, the lake is round and the lake is clear. The Shenhu Lake in the hearts of local people is said to “reverse history and predict the future.”

4. Three Great Mountains: The Three Gods Mountain in Daocheng Yading consists of three snow peaks, Xiannai, Yangmaiyong and Xianuoduoji. Daocheng Yading Shenfeng ranks 11th among the 24 Buddhist sites in the world. The unique religious significance makes this place a mysterious veil. The scenery along the way is extremely beautiful, so don’t miss it.

Yang Maiyong

Yangmai Yong Tibetan means “Manjusri Bodhisattva” at an altitude of 5958 meters. It is ranked first in the snow mountain of “Lord of Three Masters” in Buddhism. Yang Maiyong is like a girl, demure and dignified. Standing on the top of the peak, turning around and looking back, the forest, grassland, and streams guard each side in harmony among the vast canyons surrounded by mountains, and they are reckless.

Xian Nai Ri

Xian Nairi is a god mountain closest to the entrance of Yading Scenic Area, which can be seen from Chonggu Temple. The entire snow mountain is shaped like a ring-shaped ice bucket, so the mountain always faces us when viewed from both sides. The snow on the peak does not melt all year round, and the mountain shape resembles a giant Buddha leaning back. If you want to watch at close range, you still need to ride a horse to enter. You can also try walking on foot.

The first tour route: From the entrance of the scenic area, take the scenic sightseeing car to Zhaguanbeng, walk 0.5km to Chonggu Temple, and you can choose to take the battery car to Nuorong Niuchang. There are 5KM from Nuorong Cow Farm to Milk Sea. Among them, 3KM is a dirt road, and 2KM is an uphill road. The slope is very large, and you should wear comfortable shoes. Sichuan Local Guide Travel Tips:

Four seasons in Daocheng (Sichuan Province)

Daocheng Yading has a plateau monsoon climate. Although it is a plateau, most of the time is sunny. 7 days Daocheng Yading Nature Reserve & Danba tour

Morning drive from Chengdu to Danba (altitude 1,800m) by using the new tunnel at Balang mountain, it shortens the driving time to 6 hours, on the way you may stop at Siguniangshan town to visit Shuangqiao Valley , one of the valleys at Mount Siguniang National park which are famous for the four snow-capped peaks and the three beautiful valleys stretching from Rilong town with the landscapes of alpine forest, grasslands, and lakes etc.   

Danba sits in a deep valley at the confluence of two rivers, with another three river valleys joining the first two nearby. Each of these five valleys is equally stunning, with rugged Tibetan villages clinging to steep, fertile mountainsides above a brown river streaked with white in places where swift currents collide. 

Late afternoon, you will be driven to Danba for overnight. Overnight at Danba Zhonglu Tibetan Village. 

Early morning, drive to enjoy the sunrise at Danba Zhonglu village, then you will be transferred to Suopo Tibetan village to see the splendid watchtowers (or if  you like hiking, you can also hike to Suopo from Zhonglu, it is a nice 3 hours moderate hiking by crossing one pass where you will have nice views of villages and the river at the foot of the mountain).   

Meet your driver at Suopo and drive to Tagong (altitude 3,730m) with 3 hours in the car, the landscapes on the way is good. Upon arrival, you will be arranged to visit Tagong monastery, a nice example of a typical Tibetan monastery, with its statues, painted walls, thangkas, incents smells and plenty of monks dressed in their carmine robes. After enjoys the sunset over Yala holy mountain, another 40 minutes drive to Xinduqiao (altitude 3,300m), the heaven for photography. Overnight at Xinduqiao.

Today drive from Xinduqiao to Daocheng (altitude 3,700m) via Litang (altitude 4,010m), it is a quite long journey taking roughly 7-8 hours on the car.  

Morning cross over the Gao'ersi pass (about 4,410m high) to Yading courty, from where follows another two high passes (about 4,700m high) - the Jianziwan & Kazila, the landscape on the way is very good including deep valleys, snow capped mountains, pastures dotted with sheep and yaks. Lunch at Litang. With its 4010m altitude, Litang county is no doubt the highest city in the world. In addition to its beautiful scenery & spectacular local Tibetan customs, another tourist attraction is the Hose-racing Festival in every August. Therefore, if you are here at the very right time, you'll never miss the chance for the hose-racing & dressing show. Another 146km ride to Daocheng will be continued afterwards. Daocheng is a county that you will enjoy because of its rich soil & Tibetan culture, and a good place for recharging yourself before Yading. You may relax yourself by bathing at the hot spring & the Tibetan local dancing show. Overnight at Daocheng. 

After breakfast at the hotel, drive about 2 hours to Shangrila town, enjoy the beautiful landscapes on the way.

Upon arrival at Shangri-la town, you need to take the local sightseeing bus to Yading village, the start point for your next one and half days exploration at Yading Nature Reserve.

From Yading village (altitude 3,800m), enjoy the scenery of Chonggu Temple and the holy peak of Xiannairi. From Chonggu Temple trekking up to Drolma-la tso (Pearl Lake), the best place to view the holy peak Xiannairi. Later afternoon return to Yading village for overnight. 

Try to get up early in the morning and go to Chonggu Temple for the stunning sunrise, then take the local battery cart to Luorong Pasture, it is nestled on a high and flat valley encircled by the three sacred mountains with expansive meadows and surrounding forests.  

The pasture is dotted with brooks, lakes and the Gongga River cuts through the grassland posting a majestic view.

Then hike up to Milk Lake and Five color lake (altitude 4,700m) (roughly 6 hours round trip by hiking) or you can take the horseback riding to Sheshengya first, then trek up to Milk Lake & Five Color Lake (about 4-5 hours, the horse riding fee is on your own). It is a challenging trekking, but its all worth for the spectacular scenery.

Later afternoon get back to Yading village and take the local sightseeing bus back to Shangri-la town where you will meet the driver and head to Daocheng for overnight.

After breakfast at the hotel, start driving back to Xinduqiao. On the way, you may choose to have a stop at Litang, an important transit town along the ancient trade business route between Tibetans from Tibet and the local Hans at Kangding and Ya’an city. At Litang, you can choose to visit Litang monastery, one of the larger Gelupa monasteries in Sichuan Kham area, this monastery has close and tight relations with the 7th, 10th, and 11th Dalai Lhama. Then continue the driving to Kangding via Xinduqiao and Zheduo mountain, enjoy the nice views along the way. Overnight at Kangding.

p.s. There are daily flights available from Daocheng to Chengdu if you don't want to take the land travel. 

Today continue our drive back to Chengdu via Bifengxia where you can choose to hike around beautiful gorge or visit the cute pandas. In the afternoon, drive back to Chengdu and drop you off at your hotel. The tour ends in Chengdu.

Daocheng Yading is one of the Lost Horizons on earth. It is a beautiful fairyland hidden in the far west of Sichuan. It is not for the heart-fainted. To aspire the holy mountains include Yangmaiyong, Xiannairi and Xianuoduoji on a week-long bus tour from Chengdu. Embrace the stunning views of Milk Lake, Wuse Lake and Pearl Lake in the park will bring you an experience of lifetime.

Day 1 Chengdu – Xinduqiao

Your Yading Adventure starts by riding from Chengdu into the wild west of Sichuan. Along the way you have the chance to see the landscape over your window and stops for toilets and lunch. The road you will be on is the famous national highway 318, which is used by many off-the-main-road travelers who want to see the beautiful nature and great Tibet. You will probably see some hardcore cyclists on the road or even hikers. It is a pleasure to feel that you are traveling here to see the views that most people won’t have the chance to see. After a day’s drive normally about 8 to 9 hours, arrive in your hotel in Xinduqiao, a stopover place for people going further place here. If you are a photo lover, Xinduqiao is a good place where you may catch good moments of photos by dust or dawn. Overnight Xinduqiao.

Day 2 Xinduqiao – Shangri-La Town

Xinduqiao is at the altitude of around 3500 meters so you had better take suggestions from your guide about how to deal with mountain sickness and other safety issues. You will keep driving for this day too. Today on the road you will see views from very high places. The road is at altitude around 4000 meters passing several high mountain passes. There are places you stop for toilets and take photos. After Litang, you will pass the splendid Haizi Shan and down to Shangti-La town, formerly named Riwa, the town by the entrance of Yading Park. Its elevation is at 2800 meters, a good offset of the former day’s tension. Check in hotel and overnight here.

Day 3 Yading Hiking

Today start from your hotel and use the public bus by the entrance of the Yading Nature Reserve. Arrive and walk to Luorong Yak Ranch and walk to Niunai Lake (Milk Lake). Elevation climbs to over 4000 meters. Here you have splendid views of the two of the sacred mountains of Yading: Xianuoduoji and Yangmaiyong. These mountains are about 6000 meters’ tall and this place is well protected to remain its original looking. After Milk Lake you can keep walking to Wuse Lake, a bigger lake that is 100 meters higher than Milk Lake. And if you are a fit walker, you can even walk to the Songduo Pass, which is by the end of the valley and the highest place of the park at 4500 meters. Walking time is around 2-4 hours single way. A horse-riding is available if you get there early. An electricity car ride is involved during your visit before walking. After the walk, come back the same way back to Shangri-La town. Overnight in Shangri-La town.

Day 4 Yading Hiking - Daocheng

Today start from your hotel and use the public bus again by the entrance of the Yading Nature Reserve. Today you don’t have to use horse nor electricity car. The visit is to Pearl Lake by Chonggu Temple after your tourist bus ride. The Pearl Lake is by the foot of Xiannairi. It is a stunning lake with beautiful reflection of mountains around it. Xiannairi is considered by local people a Buddha with significance of religious sacredness. The walk is around half an hour to get there. After your photo and walking around there, come back the same way and ride to Daocheng. Overnight in Daocheng.

Day 5 Daocheng - Kangding

Daocheng is a small city with an elevation of 3800 meters. With your walking on over 4000 meters in Yading Park, this height won’t be a challenge for you anymore. Daocheng is a nice city with colorful forest around it in fall. Today you will start to drive back to Chengdu using the same road. This is when you realize how far Yading is. But only the most beautiful view hides far and remote. Isn’t it? Another town is arranged for an overnight stay going back instead of Xinduqiao so you will have chance to see different places. Kangding is a historical town between the traditional Tibet and Chine and one of the important towns where ancient people do business on the Southern Silk Road. After around 8 hours of driving, arrive and check in hotel. Overnight in Kangding.

Day 6 Kangding - Chengdu

Drive back to Chengdu full day and have a good rest on your bus/car. This is the day you start to recover from the stress of traveling and simmering the aftertaste of Yading. Maybe you can start to plan your visits to Chengdu or around. After a day’s drive arrive in Chengdu and you will be dropped off at your hotel. Your Yading Adventure tour ends.

Tips from local tour guide

1. This is the standard practical itinerary. If you want, we can also cutomize it to your personal need, no matter you want to shorten or extend your travel length, no matter what class of accommodation you prefer...

2. This trip is available from April to November. The best seasons are May, June, July, August and September, October. Winter is too cold but still doable.

3. This adventure involves walking at parks and horse trails. So walking boots are necessary for this tour. In this hiking. Elevation at most of these sights are quite high as much to 3800 meters. Precautions for mountain sickness are necessary as well. Rain proof and Sun block are also necessary when you are traveling at these places for weather changes quickly at high altitude.

4. This is a ground tour. It goes to places where the tourist facilities may not meet with standards. Western Sichuan is not a fully-developed place and unexpected incidents may happen due to bad weather, landslide in certain seasons and possible heavy traffic jams.

5. Traveling to the listed places will expect lower standard services at hotels and restaurants even if they maybe the best choices. The service level is not as up to what you have in places like Chengdu. The hotel people don't speak English nor do the people from restaurants. These places are quite far, wild but beautiful. As authenticity comes often with less comfortability. Public Toilet can be really bad. You are always recommended to use your toilet in your hotel while you don't want to use the public toilet or do it in the open wild. You are recommended to have toilet paper with you. Food are with limited options at most of the places. Basically you can find Chinese Food with Sichuan style. On a guided trip you can have them customized into vegetarian or non/less spicy.

Jampeyon (19,555feet), Manjushri in Sanskrit, Budhisattiva of Wisdom. The one here is Red Manjushri, serving asProtector of Mind Mt. Changna Dorjee (19,555feet),Vajrapani in Sanskrit, known as Thunderbolt Holder. The name is given to all the bodhisattivas holding vajra (thunderbolt, also known as Diamond) in their wrathful appearances to administer Religious Protection. The one here is black, or blue in high-rank lamas’ eyes, serving as Protector of Body. In Tibetan Buddhism the Trinity symbolizes Three Emptiness (Body, Speech and Mind)theoretically and functions in subduing evil spirits practically. The mountains have been inspiring awe all the time and protected so well that one may find what it was here hundreds of years ago. True, it is home to some 100 species of animals among its spurs, cliffs, galciers, lakes, streams, valleys, gorges, flowering alpine meadows and majestic virgin forests. Joseph F. Rock,a famous American botanist and explorer, described in the National Geographic Magazine his two visits to these peaks in 1928.To quote a few lines of the depiction from a National Geographic Magazine in July 1931 is: Shenrizig(another spelling of Chengrezigs) resembles a huge white throne, such as Living Buddhas use when meditating---a worthy seat for a Tibetan deity!... In a cloudless sky before me rose the peerless pyramid of Jambeyang(another spelling of Jampeyon),the finest mountain my eyes ever beheld.... It also prevented me from securing better photographs of Mount Chanadorje(another spelling of Changna Dorjee),for it persistently refused to unveil its hoaring head... (Note: Clients are advised to prepare their lunch-box themselves in advance) After supper, clients can pay themselves to pu up for the night at Rubuchaka Hot Spring. Day06: Daocheng-Litang-Yajiang_Xinduqiao(3,200m) On the way to visit Litang Monastery. Overnight at Xinduqiao. Day07: Xinduqiao - Chengdu Back to Chengdu and end the tour.

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Day 1 Chengdu to Daocheng Yading Fly from Chengdu to Daocheng Yading & Hotel Check in

Today, your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel and then escort you to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to catch the flight to Daocheng Yading, which needs only 1 hour. After your arrival, you will be welcomed by your local guide and driver at the arrival hall of Daocheng Yading Airport (4,411m) and then sent to your hotel at Shangri-La Town (2,950m). The rest of the day is on your own to discover Daocheng Yading and the surrounding. Have a good rest for the following hiking experience! On the way from Daocheng Yading Airport to Shangri-La Town, you will go to visit Benbo Monastery (3,940m) to have a close look at the striking claret-red Kagyu Buddhist temple cluster of over 900 years old, learn the interesting story of its establishment and the creator, and feel the sincere Buddhist pursuit and persistence of local Lamas. Tips: Since the altitude of Daocheng Yading area is mainly over 3,000 meters, you are highly suggested not do strenuous exercise to release or avoid altitude sickness. Day 2 Daocheng Yading (B) Yading Nature Reserve (Luorong Pasture - Milk Lake - Five Color Lake)

After an early breakfast, start your exploration of Daocheng Yading Nature Reserve , the Last Pure Land on Earth first found by Joseph Rock in 1928 and then be widely treated as the “Soul of Shangri-La” with extremely dreaming wonderland. Take the sightseeing bus from the tourist center to Zhaguanbeng for about 1-1.5 hours and enjoy the 2-2.5 hours’ hike to Luorong Pasture (4,150m) via Chonggu Monastery (3,900m) (you can also choose to walk 20 minute to Chonggu Monastery and take the 0.5 hour battery car to Luorong Pasture if you want to save energy). Enjoy your relaxing roam at the idyllic pasture with those carefree grazing cattle and goats, layers of multicolored dense alpine forest, clear winding stream, etc. backed by the three holy snow mountains, namely Xiannairi (Mount Chianrezig), Yangmaiyong (Mount Jambeyang) and Xianuoduoji (Mount Chanadorje). You will appreciate the most beautiful appearance of Xianuoduoji snow mountain like a powerful man! Next, take the challenging 5 km’s hike for 3-3.5 hours up to the fabulous Milk Lake (4,600m) (horse riding is available to Milk Lake and needs extra payment) and marvel at the unbelievable charm of such a holy lake like a precious blue gem that even can move one to drop tears. Continue to walk another 0.5 hour to visit Five Color Lake (4,500m) 0.3 km away to savor the impressive sightseeing with beautiful snow rock mountain in white, grey, silver and chocolate, blue and green water, various alpine plantations, clear sky backdrop, etc. particularly like an world-class oil painting. After the visiting, walk down and take the car and bus back to the entrance. And our guide and driver will send you back to your hotel at Shangri-La Town. Have a good rest! Day 3 Daocheng Yading (B) Yading Nature Reserve (Chonggu Monastery - Chonggu Meadow - Pearl Lake - Poplar Forest)

Today after breakfast, go to Chonggu Monastery as the same way on Day 2 by sightseeing bus and hike. Have a stop at the temple to admire the sacred Gelug Buddhist temple architecture in white, red, yellow and black and learn the interesting story about the temple and Joseph Rock’s stop by. From such unbeatable location, you will easily take the excellent photo of the brilliant temple and the three pure white holy snow mountains. After some short walk, embrace the lovely Chonggu Meadow (4,020m) that can be paralleled with the fairyland on earth. Stroll on the vast grassland like a thick and soft carpet in yellow and green in each season. Play along the particularly appealing transparent chanting river with clearly visible little stones like countless grains of gold sank to the bottom. Do not miss the best angle to admire the Xianuoduoji snow mountain like a powerful man. Then, continue to hike for 30 minutes to visit Pearl Lake (4,120m) that is super fascinating to admire the picturesque landscape of surrounding snow peaks, green and orange dense forest, iridescent prayer flags, and their dazzling reflection in the shimmering clear lake. Also, it is the best location to admire the holy Xiannairi snow mountain. After that, go back and be transferred to Bang River to appreciate the ten thousand acre of poplar forest (3,740m) from the best location. The wide spread of poplar trees are so charming in pure green in spring and summer and orange and golden in autumn under the frequent azure sky in Daocheng. Originally, our cruise was scheduled to end at Chongqing Chaotianmen port. But because of the low water level, we had to disembark somewhere else and took a 2-hour drive to Chaotianmen. The cruise arranges the transfer smoothly and it worked out fine in the end. But if this is something that happens usually around this time of year, it would be nice to be given a little warning beforehand.

Most Important Daocheng Yading Travel Notes

Administratively, Daocheng is a county in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province. Yading is the Yading Nature Reserve in Daocheng County, which is the major tourist area with terrific landscape. Daocheng Yading is more widely known and usually refers to Yading Nature Reserve specifically in a narrow sense mostly or Daocheng County in a board sense. During your Daocheng Yading trip, we will take you to explore the core Yading Nature Reserve and discover other top highlights in whole Daocheng County!

Visitors can go to Daocheng Yading all year round. Autumn (mid-September - mid-November) is the most popular season to see the fabulous colorful Yading Nature Reserve with white snow peaks, blue lakes, orange and yellow forests, clear blue sky, etc. with comfortable weather, and when is also the favorite time for photographers. September to October during when is also appealing to marvel at the Sangdui Red Grassland and ten thousand acre of golden yellow poplar forest, like a natural oil painting. Spring (late March - late June) is also great to see the mountains dressed with azaleas and other various flowers in different colors.

Most places in Daocheng Yading are more than 3,000 meters high above sea. To help you release or avoid altitude sickness, you are highly suggested drink some Rhodiola rosea at least one week before visiting Daocheng Yading and not do strenuous exercise during your whole trip. Besides, drink enough water and sleep well!

Visitors may not stay in only one place during you Daocheng Yading trip. For your discovery of Yading Nature Reserve, Shangri-La Town is the best place to stay with only several kilometers to the entrance and a better altitude lower than 3,000m. And for your enjoyment of other attractions and flight catching, you are more suggested to stay in Daocheng County that is 3700m high and offers more than 10 choices of 2-4 stars. Yading Village within Yading Nature Reserve is also chosen for a second hiking day, however, the altitude above 4,000 is not recommended for the first night in Daocheng, besides, the offer of facilities, hot water and electricity is not so good.

As temperature in Daocheng Yading is usually lower than that in other destinations, it is necessary to take enough down jackets, mountaineering jackets, thick sweaters, waterproof clothes, scarves, gloves and antiskid hiking shoes in spring, autumn and winter season. Long-sleeves coats are also recommended in summer. Sun block, sunglasses, hats, lip balm, and so on are suggested for all seasons.
