Editor’s Take

What to Look for in Holy Land Tour Reviews

Most trip reviews tend to focus on some or all of these 5 key areas, not all of which may be relevant to you: the tour guide, travel company, service level, country or countries traveled in, and the trip itinerary.

Remember, just because you see a 1 star review doesn’t necessarily mean that person disliked the country.

Holy Land tours are often suited for people interested in renewing their faith, and those who want to gain a further understanding of their religion through visiting historical sites. While there are exciting excursions that don’t focus on religion, such as floating in the dead sea, most of the top tourist sites are religion-based.

These tours are filled with a lot of adventure and sightseeing. Travelers love the mix of free time and rearranged site seeing. Holy Land tours offer extensive overviews of Israel, allowing visitors to explore the entire country, as well as Jordan and the Palestinian Territories. Visitors felt that safety was a priority, which is comforting when traveling in unknown lands. Tour guides were noted to be extremely knowledgeable while exploring different sites/regions, including learning about the culture and the people.

The tour guides also focused on making sure everyone was having an enjoyable experience, so you can trust that you’re going to have a great time on your Holy Land visit. Many people said having tour guides who knew the land and an array of knowledge made their experience meaningful. Having someone who is so passionate about their country and can show you secret places that only locals know about creates unforgettable memories. Travelers felt that the quality of their visit was overall worth it, and the ease of having everything arranged (including flights, hotels, transportation, tours, and making sure your luggage gets between places) helped make the trip enjoyable.

Trip reviews can vary depending on what you’re looking for in your Holy Land tour. Itinerary lengths span from 1 week-2 weeks, and sometimes longer. Physical activity depends on the tour as well, some with easy to moderate physical activity levels, and some with more strenuous activity. Awareness of the itineraries and how many activities you expect to do can help you prepare for this trip. This information is posted on each tour webpage. Checking before booking a tour can help ensure a positive trip that matches your needs and desires.

Depending on the time of year you go, some travelers noted that the dry, hot summers made traveling difficult. Checking into the monthly weather conditions and knowing what type of weather you’re looking to travel in can help make a better experience. Another difficulty for travelers is the culture shock/change, especially for those who are new to international travel.

The new food can be a big change as well. Studying up before you on the culture and language (and maybe checking out a local Israeli restaurant at home!) before you head out on your upcoming adventure can help ease these travel difficulties, creating a more pleasant experience.

11 Great Reasons to Visit Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

11 great reasons to visit Jerusalem and the Holy Land

For some Christians, a Holy Land tour is a no brainer. You know you want to go and you have the funds to go. For others, the funds might not appear to be there and there isn’t enough information to make a commitment.

There are plenty of articles out there on why you should visit Jerusalem, or Israel, or the Holy Land. But many of the reasons aren’t much different than other travel destinations. The food is great and the sights are fantastic. But these don’t explain why Christians pilgrims go to Jerusalem.

So, let’s take a look at 11 reasons why you should visit Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

  • Jerusalem and Israel are safe!
  • The city where Christ sacrificed Himself on the cross is a real place.
  • Visiting the Holy Land will give you a better sense of the stories in the Bible.
  • To understand the Disciples as fishers of men, you have to get on the Sea of Galilee.
  • You can see the complexities of modern and ancient geopolitics sitting on top of each other.
  • You’ll connect with God and your faith in ways you can’t at home.
  • A Holy Land tour is financially doable and worth it.
  • The Dead Sea is the lowest place on Earth.
  • Jerusalem is THE focal point for all 3 Abrahamic religions.
  • Because it’s old.
  • You can leave a prayer note in the Western Wall.

1. Jerusalem and Israel are safe!

Of all the places I’ve traveled to around the world, Israel is by far one of the safest. Even safer than some of America’s most prominent cities. Don’t get me wrong though, Israel does have its problems.

1) Terrorism is not as prominent as you’re told, but it does happen. Tourists buy things and there is a reluctance to upset that balance. Also, much of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict occurs in the margin. Meaning, it happens in ways outsiders don’t see or understand. It’s much more productive to poke at the Israeli Government when no one is looking in order to elicit a response. Whether it be violent or political, it can be argued that the response was unprovoked. However, if it happened in a tourist area surrounded by thousands of smart phones watching, media spin is much harder. Modern terrorism is extremely aware when it comes to the media.

2) A more probable threat to Christians actually comes from the Orthodox Jewish community. The threat is low though. It’s often unorganized, unplanned and normally directed towards Christians walking alone. The reasons usually surround land disputes. The threat typically manifests in the form of intimidation vice violence. Don’t back down though, this paper tiger easily retreats.

3) Your biggest issue will be petty crime and swindling. Language barriers and a traveler’s unfamiliarity with the environment are a thief’s weapons. These things are common around the world, even in your hometown.

Understanding the issues can help you navigate the threats better. For an in-depth guide on security in Israel, check out my post on the topic right here .

For travel safety tips and how to improve your security posture, check out my post on the topic right here .

2. The city where Christ sacrificed Himself on the cross is a real place.

In Hebrews 11:1 , the author states, “ faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” As Christians, we have faith in God. We trust that the Word of God, the Bible, is inerrant. We don’t need proof to believe God exists. But that doesn’t mean there is no proof.

One of the things that Christianity ushered into history, besides Christ’s sacrifice, is science and reason. Early Christians could easily point to Calvary or the empty tomb and ask, “if it isn’t real then why that?”

the-holy-sepulchre-and-the-shrine-tomb-of-christ-in-jerusalem-ca-fourth-twelfth-339

These first century Christians saw something happen and they passed that knowledge on. In my post about the Church of the Holy Sepulchre , I talk about this. Despite the Roman siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE and the renaming of the city, the Christian community remained.

In 135 BCE the Romans built a temple to the goddess Venus over what 1 st century Christians knew was the tomb.

When Helena came to find the tomb in 326 BCE, the spot was marked. “Ya, it’s over there under that Temple,” someone might have said. When the temple was torn down a tomb was, in fact, there. And today we have the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

There are tons of spots in Jerusalem and throughout Israel that line up with the Bible. Spots like Hezekiah’s tunnel, the Pools of Bethesda, the Lion’s Gate / East Gate, and the Southern Steps.

Seeing these sites puts you in the story. It makes everything you’ve read about, studied and imagined come alive. Which brings me to my next reason.

3. Visiting the Holy Land will give you a better sense of the stories in the Bible.

When you stand over the Valley of Elah and see how small it is, you’ll understand the battle David won. As Americans, our concept of landscape is often framed by places like the Grand Canyon, or the Rocky Mountains. Or Death Valley. We imagine vast landscapes as far as the eye can see.

Israel is small. The Valley of Elah is really small.

Valley of Elah

In 1 Samuel 17 , we get a description of the two armies chanting at each other. And then they all watch David beat Goliath. When I was a kid, I figured that stuff was all semantics. Maybe the soldiers up front saw the dual. But there was no way everyone saw it.

When I stood over the Valley of Elah for the first time, I realized how up-close that battle was. It became real to me.

Israel is filled with spots like this. The Sorek Valley from Sampson and Delilah is another example.

Judean Wilderness

Or, the wilderness. The Judean Wilderness is probably the most captivating sight I saw on my first trip. It has been largely untouched and today pockets of nomads and sheepherders live there. A stop at any of the lookouts will give you an idea of how dangerous it was and probably still is.

The Judean wilderness is miles upon miles of rolling hills where one could easily get lost and die of heat exhaustion. Or get eaten by wildlife. It makes Jesus’s 40 days in the wilderness sound much harsher than say, 40 days in Yosemite.

The places in the Bible actually exist and many have been unearthed. Placing your feet on the ground where the people in the Bible placed their feet provides perspective. It will reframe your understanding.

4. To understand the Disciples as fishers of men, you have to get on the Sea of Galilee.

Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee is not a sea, it’s a lake. It’s 64 square miles in area. Which would make it the 80 th largest lake in the US if it were in America.

The lake is usually calm and flat. However, it sits in a rift valley, which is a fault line. The valley channels wind and weather fronts. Earthquakes come into play as well. All of this means that the lake can go from calm to tense in an instant.

I’m not going to lie, a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee is really cheesy.

The boats that are used are pretty stable and can fit over 50 people. The crew will pull out a net in the style of the first-century fishing nets. Then they’ll cast it out to demonstrate its use. Then they’ll retrieve it and kick in the engines to get to your drop off point.

When you watch them cast that net, imagine being on a boat with a flat bottom, wide beam and low freeboard. If you aren’t picking up what I’m putting down, I’m referring to a boat that does not have great stability.

Jesus Boat

Back in the 1980s, the remains of a boat similar to the first century boats were found encased in the mud of the shoreline. These boats were not big. In order to deal with the shallow shores, they needed shallow drafts.

Towns popped up along the shores of the lake wherever fishing docks thrived. This meant fishermen went wherever there was work. This is a great theological point.

Being a fisher of men means going wherever the need is. And when you cast your net, you cast it wide. Some fish will escape and others will jump back overboard. But the effort is worth it.

5. You can see the complexities of modern and ancient geopolitics sitting on top of each other.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an issue that many want you to see. You see it in the news, and you’ll no doubt get asked questions about it. And you’ll find that a lot of people have opinions about it.

But when you visit Israel, as with any country really, you’ll see a different side. The Holy Land in particular is layer upon layer of religious history. There is a pagan history that predates Jewish history. And then there’s Roman history, Christian history, and Muslim history. And it all conflicted with each other over several millennia.

Western Wall Stones

The Holy Land has been a focal point for moving people since the dawn of time. To the east is a vast lifeless desert. And to the west is the sea, which was just as dangerous as the desert to the ancients. The Holy Land sat on the narrow route that connected Asia with Africa.

All of this coming-and-going meant conflict. What you see today is no different then what you would have seen 2,000 years ago. Which was and is a cornucopia of people groups living among each other.

There are Palestinians living and working in non-West Bank Israel. There are Israelis committed to keeping the peace for everyone, not just their own. And there are bad actors running amuck.

You’ll see Muslim shop owners in the Old City market. You’ll see Palestinian Christians in the West Bank. And Hasidic Jews rushing to prayer.

You’ll see the wall around the West Bank. And you’ll see the debris pile that the Muslim Waqf dug out from inside the Temple Mount. A move to clear out any possible remnants that could prove ancient Jewish presence.

Same tom-foolery, same location, same people. Just different dividing lines and issues. You won’t get that on the news.

6. You’ll connect with God and your faith in ways you can’t at home.

When you pray in Israel, it’s actually a local call. Ok, bad joke.

There is no theological basis for finding God in certain places but not others. In the Bible when God’s presence occupied space on Earth, the ground was considered to be holy. But it didn’t remain holy.

God spoke to Moses just as much in Midian as he did in Horeb. And Egypt, the Red Sea, Mount Sinai, and the desert. He’s everywhere.

Throughout the Bible, even in the Old Testament with its Levitical sacrifices, prayer was the primary means to connect with God. In the New Testament, humanity’s relationship with God relied more heavily on this idea. The idea that the church was a people, not a building.

Visiting the Holy Land introduces you to a different way of seeing the stories in the Bible. As you engage with those stories, you will see them with new perspectives.

When you visit the Holy Land, you might not feel close to God the entire trip. In fact, my first time visiting I often wondered why everyone around me felt connected to God but I didn’t. It wasn’t until months later that I started to see something.

Everyone will have a different experience.  It’s perfectly normal to head home wondering why your Holy Land tour just felt like a normal vacation.

Eventually, though, something will click. You might be reading the story of Jesus turning over the tables at the temple. Then you suddenly remember walking the Temple Mount and how big it was. This means that a lot of people saw what Jesus did. And that is important.

The more you interact with your experience, the more you will understand God. As well as the story He is writing for humanity and your life.

7. A Holy Land tour is financially doable and worth it.

Travel anywhere in the world requires a financial commitment. Whether it’s a 10-hour drive to Grandma and Grandpa’s place for Christmas, or Europe, or the Holy Land. If you’re pondering a trip to Israel , don’t let finances hold you back.

For some people, airfare can be expensive and it’s hard to know which trips offer the best experiences.

Some people might feel intimidated by the effort. For a breakdown of tour costs, check out my post on the topic right here . In that post, I break down tours by cost per day. The best tours are in the $300-$350 per day range. That includes lodging and in-country transportation.

The bright side is that churches that put together their own trips tend to be a little cheaper. And they often include airfare because they can get group discounts when departing from the same city. Sometimes churches also offer scholarships to help people out.

If you’re struggling to figure out the finances, start by saving small. Put $25, $50 or even $100 into a separate account each month.

There is also the pastor’s dilemma. A lot of pastors fear pushback at the appearance of wealth or pleasures in their personal life. This is a hurdle that looks bigger than it is.

You are a pastor; God has bestowed the responsibility on you to shepherd a group of people for Him. You need to know your craft.

A Holy Land tour might seem like a pleasure cruise, and it can be if you want it to. Or it can be a learning tour. Treat it like a class. Take notes. Ask questions. Ponder information. Think about ways to incorporate your experience into your ministry.

If an athlete goes to spring training, a minister goes to the Holy Land.

8. The Dead Sea is the lowest place on Earth.

The Dead Sea

At 1,400 ft below sea level, the surface of the Dead Sea is the lowest place on Earth you can visit. Even if you went diving in the ocean somewhere, you aren’t going down 1,400 ft below the surface. You might get as far as a couple of hundred feet in an underwater rig laboratory, but that’s it.

The Dead Sea is called dead because nothing can live in it. Salinity levels, or salt content, is more than 9 times that of the ocean.

As a result of its salinity, The Dead Sea has a higher density than ocean water. This means that you will float easier in the Dead Sea. A lot easier. In fact, it’s hard to go underwater. You will sit higher when floating as well.

Because the Dead Sea sits so low in the atmosphere, the air is denser too. Meaning there are more air molecules stacked up at the bottom. This makes it hard for radiation from the sun to get through. Though I’d still put my sunscreen on.

For millennia, the Dead Sea has been known for the health benefits of its mud. It has been used to treat psoriasis and other skin ailments. Its also been used for general skin health and beauty treatments.

Scientists have studied the Dead Sea for years. In addition to skin therapy, studies have been done on the effects of the denser air. They’ve seen patients with cystic fibrosis benefit from the higher atmospheric density.  Meaning they get more oxygen molecules into their lungs per breath.

One thing to be prepared for though is a slight sting from the high salt content. Some people will make it sound bad, but it’s not. Don’t be afraid to put your suit on and get in the water.

9. Jerusalem is the focal point for all 3 Abrahamic religions.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Mosque of Omar

Regardless of Islam’s take on “things,” or Judaism’s denial of Christ, we all trace our roots to Abraham. This is monumental.

There are more than 7 billion people on this planet and a plethora of religious thoughts and religions. Yet there are billions of fingers all pointing at Jerusalem. Something happened there and people know it.

One might say this knowledge is in our DNA. Others might say it’s learned and it needs to be deconstructed. Still, more people might say that it is a big nothing-burger.

Whatever the message is, there is an air of importance around the city of Jerusalem. Whatever happened there was a big deal. There are millions of cities on this planet, but none of them carry this much significance.

The question we need to answer is “why?”

If nothing happened, then why did the city gain so much notoriety?

Why this city? If it’s because it is a gateway between continents, then what about Istanbul? It’s an even bigger gateway. Or Caesarea, or Acco (Acre), which were huge ports and business hubs.

Why are we still talking about it to this day? If Abraham was just a guy and his God was nothing special, why is the conversation still going?

For me, the answer to all these questions rests on the fact that Jerusalem and its monuments point directly to God.

There have been archaeologists and scholars who have tried to disprove the existence of God through research in this city. And they almost always end up finding what the rest of us find. A God-sized footprint.

And like a sasquatch footprint, we’re all looking around to find the culprit. For some, He’s standing right there. For others, they can’t see because they don’t want to.

10. Because it’s old.

Western Wall Tunnels

Yes, I know, visiting a destination because it’s old sounds weird. Or naïve. But, I’m serious.

There are few places on earth where we can see ruins of civilizations from thousands of years ago.

Europe is so populated and has been so torn up by war, you can’t go back much farther than the middle ages. Egypt has the pyramids. Iraq has some ruins from Babylon.

There aren’t many places where the old and the new exist in tandem. Much of the Old City Jerusalem is newer. And by newer, I mean 1,000 to 1,500 years old. But there is a lot that is old, such as the Herodian foundation stones for the Temple Mount pictured above. Which you can touch it.

The Herodian stones are distinct by their chamfered dressed edges. The Temple Mount was rebuilt in the first century BC and the foundation is still in use today as a foundation. Archaeologists have also found remnants of a well-preserved sidewalk in the Western Wall underground.

You can literally walk on the same exact pavement that fist century Christians walked on.

Watern Wall Underground Sidewalk

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is soaked in history. The building you see today is about 1,000 years old. And different parts of the Church go back as far as Jesus’s time.

Needless to say, we don’t have those kinds of interactions with history in America. We can visit the National Archives and maybe see the original constitution behind a billion inches of glass. Or we can go to Philadelphia and see the Liberty Bell.

Either of these things are only a couple hundred years old.

For more on the Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre , check out the links to my posts on the topics.

11. You can leave a prayer note in the Western Wall.

Prayer Cards

I’m not sure how it started, but there is a tradition of leaving prayer notes between the stones and in the cracks of the Western Wall.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation cleans the notes out twice a year and buries them on the Mount of Olives.

Granted, you can submit a request on the foundation’s website to have someone place a note for you. But placing one yourself is way better.

The Western Wall is considered an active outdoor synagogue. This means men must wear a hat, and women must cover their shoulders and knees. People pray at the wall at all hours of the day and night.

For Jews, the wall is the closest they can get to the location of the Hebrew Temple. As a Christian, I’m don’t buy into it as a way to get physically close to God.

Praying at the Western Wall will not get you any brownie points with God or special consideration for your prayer. However, I think there is something special about praying at or near the location that many of the people in the Bible did.

David built an altar on Mount Moriah. His son, Solomon, built a temple. That temple was destroyed and another built. Jesus visited the Herodian temple as a child and again before His crucifixion.

How cool is it that we can worship and pray just like they did thousands of years ago? As if we are just carrying on the tradition.

Take a trip through time to Jordan's Holy Land, a country brimming with religious heritage from all eras of human history. Centered on Christianity, the tour of the Holy Land will renew your soul while satisfying your spiritual aspirations. From Amman to Madaba and Jerash, traverse through the world's holiest locations, where the roots of Christianity were first laid. • Head to Madaba, where you can explore the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, renowned for its ancient Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land and other historical monuments.

Travel Tips

  • It may get very hot in the Holy Land, especially in the summer. Therefore, keep in mind to take sunscreen and light and airy clothes for the day. Make sure to carry enough water with you to stay hydrated as well.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING...

holy land tour reddit

From a group of individuals, with varying motivation, we left as friends, not only with each other but with the people we met along the way and felt united as a group, bound by the shared and varied experiences which Holy Land Trust had given us. It was exhausting and amazing in equal measure, but above all, a once in a lifetime experience.

This program gives you a truly extensive immersion experience across The Holy Land. The community projects, the family visits, and access to policymakers sets this program apart from all the rest.

My own Christian faith has been deepened from my experience. I have more hope for the region from having met so many incredible people.

The most amazing thing is how the Palestinians have retained their amazing spirit! I felt so welcomed by everyone I spoke with and met while at PSE. By the end of my time in Palestine, I had a new family that I loved... many new friends from around the world... and I am happy to let you know I consider  ‪ Palestine my other home. Inshallah"

The tour went very smoothly. Adjustments were made appropriately to itineraries due to traffic conditions or time constraints, transport was comfortable and efficient, the guides were all informative and (mostly!) sensitive and the hotels looked after us well. We all enjoyed the food!

My time spent there was perhaps the most influential thing I’ve ever done, it has greatly ignited my passion for social justice and encouraged me to advocate for the ‪injustice of this conflict as much as I can.

We will then continue on to Haifa, where we will ascend Mt. Carmel for a panoramic view of the city and the Bay of Haifa. We will also visit Muhraka, where Elijah fought the false prophets of Baal.

Our next stop will be in Akko, also known as Acre. Here, we will see the underground passages and secret rooms, as well as the prison.

In the afternoon/evening, we will drive through the Pastoral Hills of Galilee to our hotel for check-in. Dinner will be served at the hotel, and we will spend the night in the Galilee region.

Tuesday, Day 3: Tiberias, Wester Galilee, Banias (Golan Heights)

The day will start with a short tour of Tiberius, including a boat cruise on the Sea of Galilee in a Jesus boat replica. You will also visit Capernaum, the center of Jesus’ Galilean ministry and the site of many of his miracles, and the remains of a 2nd-century synagogue.

Next, you will visit Tabgha, the site of the Loaves and Fishes, including the Church of the Multipication, with a 4th-century mosaic floor. You will then head to the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount, and Banias Springs and Caesarea Philippi, one of the sources of the River Jordan and the place where Peter made the confession of faith in Christ.

After a relaxing dinner at your hotel, you will have the evening at leisure. You will spend the night in the Galilee region.

Wednesday, Day 4: Nazareth, Beit Shean

Start your day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel, before setting out on a full day of sightseeing in Israel. Your first stop is the site of Jesus’ first miracle, the Cana of Galilee, where he turned water into wine (John 2:1).

Next, visit the boyhood home of Jesus in Nazareth and see the Grotto of the Annunciation and the Church of St. Joseph, which are built over the traditional site where Mary and Joseph lived. You’ll also visit the location of the ancient City Well, where it is believed that the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary.

After lunch, head to Yardenit, a Baptismal site in the Jordan River where you can be baptized if you choose. Afterward, visit the newly excavated and ongoing archaeological site of Beit Shean, where you’ll see the amphitheater, colonnaded Roman streets, mosaics, and Roman bathhouses (1st Samuel 31:10).

As the day comes to a close, take a drive through the Jordan Valley and see the desert bloom with flowers and vegetation, as prophesied by Isaiah in chapter 35:1-2.

After arriving in Jerusalem in the afternoon, check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxing dinner. You may want to take a leisurely stroll through the streets of Jerusalem before retiring for the night. Overnight in Jerusalem.

Thursday, Day 5: Jerusalem: The Old City

On the fifth day of your Israel tour, you will have the opportunity to visit several important sites in Jerusalem and the Old City. You will begin the day with breakfast at the hotel, before setting out to see the Mount of Olives, a beautiful mountain with a panoramic view of the Old City and the Golden Gates, as well as an urban garden where Jesus prayed before his crucifixion. You will also visit the Upper Room, the site of Jesus’ last Passover meal, and the Jewish Quarter, a southeastern sector of the Old City with a restored marketplace called the Cardo.

Other notable sites on this day include the Western Wall, a holy place for Jews and the last remaining structure of the Second Temple, and the Via Dolorosa, also known as the Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, which marks the route Jesus took to his crucifixion. You will also visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed by many Catholics and Orthodox Christians to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, and the Garden Tomb, a similar site revered by many Evangelical Christians.

After a full day of sightseeing, you will return to the hotel for the evening at leisure, with dinner provided. You will spend the night in Jerusalem.

Saturday, Day 7: Massada and the Dead Sea area

Today, we will begin with an early breakfast at our hotel before setting out on a journey south toward the Dead Sea. As we approach the shores, we will descend to the lowest point on Earth – 1305 feet (398m) below sea level. Our first stop will be at Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were famously discovered by a young shepherd boy. Next, we will ascend by cable car to the mountaintop plateau of Masada, where the Jewish Zealots bravely fought against the Romans. The Zealots preferred death as free men over Roman slavery and torture and held out for three years against Flavius Silva’s legions.

After exploring these historical sites, we will make our way to the Dead Sea itself – a unique body of water with a salt content of 11%-13% and other natural ingredients. Weather permitting, we will float on the Dead Sea and cover ourselves in its therapeutic mud. In the afternoon and evening, we will return to our hotel in Jerusalem for dinner and an overnight stay.

Sunday, Day 8: Tel Aviv / Ben Gurion Airport

Naomi and Naamah Feliciano

Eyal for the past 6/7 years you have been handling my visits to Israel. I don’t know how you do it but every time your tours surpass the previous ones.

This one was no different! It totally surpassed the previous ones. My family’s first time in Israel was an incredible once in a lifetime experience thanks to your expertise in putting the tour together to accommodate each and everyone’s needs and desires.

There was excitement for my young grandchildren as there were things geared just for their age and desires. My family toured all of Israel for first time and missed out on nothing. Yet my daughter and I who had been there 4 times already found things never seen in our previous trips.

Your choice of guide all these years was the perfect one! Hillel made your efforts in putting everything together a total success. Looking forward to our next trip.

Thank you so much to your staff and guide Hillel for another awesome experience in Israel.

Beth Fisher

I apologize for the delay in my response. Thank you so much for the wonderful trip to Israel. I appreciate all your hard work in getting everything together. Our guides were great, knowledgeable and very accommodating. The hotels were conveniently located, comfortable and nicely furnished. Everything ran smoothly.

Day 3, Caesarea - Haifa - Stella Maris - Nazareth - Tiberias - Cana Theme: The Annunciation

Following breakfast, we will drive to Caesarea, the former capital of Judea. You will have the opportunity to visit the archaeological remains of this ancient port, which aided as base for the Herodian navy. Shortly after the time of Jesus Christ, it was revealed to Peter in Caesarea that the Good News (to repent) is not only intended for Jewish people, but also the entire world. This is the place which officially ended the tradition of adhering to the Jewish ceremonial laws. As a result, Peter baptized a group of gentiles, the Roman Centurion, Cornelius, and his family. Continue North to Haifa. In Haifa, you will find Stella Maris, a Carmelite Monastery. The monastery is located above the cave where Elijah, the prophet, once lived. A colorful painting of this "wonder-worker" can be found on the ceiling of the Church. Following this visit, enjoy the scenic drive (with view of the bay of Acco) to Nazareth. In Nazareth you will experience the town where Mary once lived and where Jesus lived as a child (Matthew 2:23). During the visit to Nazareth we visit the church of the Annunciation which includes the church of St Joseph ( It's not Byzantine - it's from 1914-21 built over Byzantine ruins) which tradition identifies it with the workshop of Joseph and the house of the Holy family. We will continue with a visit of the Church of the Incarnation, viewing at Grotto the remains of the house of the Blessed Virgin where the Angel appeared and announced the good news. Following Pilgrims path we visit Mary's well, where often the Virgin Mary would have walked to draw water from the spring. The next stop will be to Cana where you will visit the Franciscan Wedding Church. Couples will have the opportunity to participate in the ceremony to renew their wedding vows. Your first day culminates with a transfer to Tiberias. Upon arrival in Tiberias, you will check-in to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4, Tiberias: Sea of Galilee Theme: The Ministry of Christ in the Galilee

After breakfast we start with a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee. After this, see the remains of a boat that dates back to the time of Jesus, found buried in mud. Continue to the Mount of Beatitudes, scene of Jesus’ great Sermon on the Mount. Nearby is Tabgha, where Jesus fed the crowd of 5,000 and onto the site known as “Peter’s Primacy”. Here, after His resurrection, Jesus met with His disciples and told Peter to “feed my lambs; feed my sheep.” [John 21:9]. After lunch, we visit the remains of the fishing village of Magdala (Aramaic for “elegant”). During the time of Jesus it was a thriving place that exported dried fish and garum (a fish sauce reduction popular in Roman cooking). Excavations done by the Franciscans in the 1970s revealed the residential area of the village and the docks where the fishing boats would unload the fish caught in the Sea of Galilee. In 2009 a chance discovery revealed a 1stCentury synagogue at the entrance to the village from West. It is also assumed that Mary Magdalen was born here. End the day at Capernaum, from where Jesus launched his Ministry; see the synagogue which dates to the time of Jesus and the church built over the site of Peter’s home. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 5, Jordan River - Mt. Tabor – Jericho – Jordan River - Jerusalem Theme: The Transfiguration

Today, after breakfast, drive to Mount Tabor, the site of the Transfiguration, with time to reflect on Christ’s Humanity and Divinity. Mass here will be a good preparation for the journey to Jerusalem where Jesus was to suffer the crucifixion and resurrection. Drive down the Jordan Valley to Jericho, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, where we view Mt Temptation and an example of a Sycamore Tree. Visit the Baptismal site on the Jordan River then to Jerusalem, where you check-in to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 6, Jerusalem: Bethlehem & Ein Karem Theme: The Visitation and Nativity

Begin the day with a visit to the Second Temple scale model for an overview of Jerusalem as it was at the time of Jesus. A short drive takes us to the village of Ein Karem, birthplace of John the Baptist, to visit the church that commemorates his memory. Pray the Mystery of the Rosary on the walk up the hill to the Church of the Visitation. In the afternoon visit Bethlehem to see the cave at the Shepherds’ Field. The caves have soot marks of the fires that shepherd’s lit to keep warm while watching over their flocks. In the afternoon we will depart to Bethlehem, beginning at Manger Square, which stands in front of one of the oldest of Christian churches, the Church of the Nativity. Enter the Church and down to the Grotto of the Nativity which marks the spot of Jesus’ birth. Beneath the Altar, there is a silver star with the Latin inscription: HIC DE VIRGINE MARIA JESUS CHRISTUS NATUS (Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary.) After Mass we will return to the hotel in Jerusalem. Dinner and overnight.

Day 7, Jordan River - Qumran - Dead Sea Theme: Early Years in Jerusalem & the Wilderness.

This morning drive down the Jordan Valley to Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Afterwards there may be time for a dip in the Dead Sea for those who want to. Drive through the Judean Wilderness where Jesus spent 40 days fasting, and it is in this area that John the Baptist lived and baptized Christ. Then to Bethany where He raised Lazarus from the dead. Celebrate Mass here before returning to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

Day 8, Jerusalem: Mt. Of Olives - Gethsemane - Mt. Zion - Western Wal Theme: Palm Sunday and the Agony in the Garden

From the Mount of Olives take in the panoramic view of Jerusalem. Then to the Pater Noster shrine, where Jesus taught His disciples the Pater Noster — The Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:1-4). Walking down the Palm Sunday Road stop at the beautiful little church, Dominus Flevit - “The Lord wept.” It was here that Jesus wept over Jerusalem [Luke 19:41]. At Gethsemane reflect on Jesus’ final night. The Garden contains trees, the roots of which go back to the time of Jesus. Visit the Church of All Nations to pray at the “Rock of Agony,” a section of bedrock identified as the place where Jesus prayed alone in the garden on the night of His arrest. Visit the Western Wall, to see all that remains of the Temple compound that dates to the time of Jesus. From here we will continue to the house of the High Priest Caiaphas where He was interrogated and imprisoned. Now called Peter in Gallicantu (“crowing rooster”), this beautiful Church also commemorates Peter’s Denial of Christ, his repentance and then being forgiven by Jesus. After Mass we will go up to Mt. Zion to visit the Upper Room, which commemorates the Last Supper. Nearby is the Benedictine Church of the Dormition. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 9, Jerusalem: Via Dolorosa - Holy Sepulchre- Western Wall Theme: The Way of the Cross, The Crucifixion, The Resurrection

This morning we start the Via Dolorosa (The Way of the Cross) at the Antonia Fortress, where Jesus was condemned to death by Pontius Pilate. From there He was taken through the city to be crucified. The Stations of the Cross lead, through the markets of the Old City to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Here is the site of Calvary and the Tomb of Christ. Mass will be in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. After breakfast visit the Church of St Anne’s, the Pool of Bethesda and the Sisters of Zion. This afternoon there will be time to revisit the Old City. Dinner and Overnight.

This evening we will walk to St. Peter’s Square for Rosary (optional).

Day 11, Rome: Papal Audience – Trevi Fountain / Piazza Navona – Basilica of St. John the Lateran and St. Mary Major – Holy Stairs

Following breakfast, we will make our way to St. Peter’s Square to attend the Papal Audience, led by His Holiness, Pope Francis. (Papal Audience: Is scheduled to take place every Wednesday, pending the schedule of Pope Francis.) Following the audience, we will make our way to the Trevi Fountain built in the 15th Century to mark the ending destination of the Aqua Virgo – a man-made channel erected in 19 B.C or Piazza Navona where at the center: Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi “Fountain of the Four Rivers. After free time for lunch we will visit the Basilica of St. John the Lateran, the Pope’s Cathedral church where relics of both Peter and Paul remain under the main altar. It was here that Pope Francis was formally installed as Bishop of Rome. Next we cross the street to see the Holy Staircase which is believed to be a staircase from Pilate’s palace in Jerusalem and brought to Rome by St. Helen in the 4th century. Time permitting we may climb the steps on our knees in memory of Christ’s Passion. Continue to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, the most important and the oldest church dedicated to Our Lady. Day 12, Rome: St. Peter's Basilica - Vatican Museum - Appian Way - Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls - Catacombs

Following breakfast, we will depart to celebrate Mass in the largest church in Christendom, St Peter's Basilica, built on the site where St Peter was martyred. Marvel Pieta and Bernini's amazing bronze canopy. The tour ends as we make our way back into St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Francis visited the tomb of St. Peter, following his elevation, for a visit of devotion that lasted 45 minutes. He is the first Pontiff to visit the necropolis since extensive archaeological excavations were conducted at the ancient site decades ago. We will also visit the tomb of Saint John Paul II located at the Vatican. There will be free time for lunch, and then we will continue on to visit St Paul. Outside the Walls. Continue our tour via the Appian Way -- the oldest road from Roman times--plus the famous Domino Quo Vadis Chapel; see the ancient Baths of Caracalla, Arch of Drusus; Tomb of Celilia Metella, and the catacombs of St Callixtus where the early Christians hid themselves to escape persecution. We will conclude our day and wonderful stay in Rome with dinner at a local restaurant in Rome.

Day 13, Rome – Assisi

After an early breakfast, we will head north through the Roman countryside with its villas and vineyards. During your drive, your tour escort will explain the spiritual, historical, and cultural overview of Italy, which will help to orient you to this beautiful country and prepare you for all that you will experience in the days to follow. Continue on to make our way to Assisi, the hometown of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment, and the founder of the Franciscan Order. We arrive in time for dinner at our hotel.

Day 14, Assisi (St. Francis)

Today is a very special day, as we will spend a full day touring the home of the Saint that inspired our Holy Father. Pope Francis chose his name in admiration of the Saint of Nature and Servant to the Poor. Known for being a humble man himself, Pope Francis spent most of his life denying the luxuries of life, and preferring to live in simplicity and humility. Following breakfast, we will begin a tour of Assisi. Visit the tomb of St Francis. Explore the quaint hilltop birthplace of St Francis that still retains something of the atmosphere of the early 1200s, the period when St Francis began his ministry. Contained within the huge 13th-century Basilica are many of the saint's possessions and a series of frescoes depicting his life. You may kneel before the crucifix from which Jesus spoke to St Francis, asking him to rebuild His church. It was in St Mary of the Angels Basilica where St Francis spent most of his life. Here we visit the Chapel, Portiuncola, the rose bush, and the cave where the saint retired for prayer. Stroll the medieval streets of the compact little town. You will have some free time to shop or eat lunch at an outdoor cafe with a view of an ancient Roman temple, we go to the Church of St. Clare to view the relics of St. Clare. The foundress of the Order of Poor Clares followed the teachings of St Francis by living a life of poverty and humility. We will visit these two saints' tombs before dinner and retiring for the evening

Day 15, Assisi – Siena - Assisi

After breakfast we will head south to Siena, the birthplace of Saints Catherine (Doctor of the Church, and one of the two patron Saints of Italy, with St. Francis of Assisi) and Bernardine (known as the “Apostle of Italy” for his efforts to revive the Catholic faith in the 15th century). Siena is also one of Italy’s loveliest medieval cities. Here we will stroll the Piazza Del Campo, one of Italy’s finest squares and visit the Cathedral and the Basilica of St. Francis, containing the miraculous consecrated hosts that remained intact since 1730. After lunch, we will continue on to view the incorrupt head of St. Catherine at the Basilica of St. Dominic (Her body is preserved in Rome in the Basilica St. Maria sopra Minerva). We travel back to Assisi for dinner and overnight.

World News | Hamas again raises the possibility of a 2-state compromise. Israel and its allies aren’t convinced

holy land tour reddit

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has said for more than 15 years that it could accept a two-state compromise with Israel — at least, a temporary one. But Hamas has also refused to say that it would recognize Israel or renounce its armed fight against it.

For Israel and many others, especially in the wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that spurred the latest war in Gaza, that’s proof that Hamas is still irrevocably bent on destroying Israel. The United States and European countries have joined Israel in shunning the militant group they have labeled a terrorist organization.

For some observers, Hamas has signaled a potential pragmatism that could open a path to a solution. But the group’s vagueness as it tries to square the circle of its own positions has fueled suspicion.

Hamas offers long-term “truces” instead of outright peace. It has dropped open pledges to destroy Israel but endorses “armed resistance” — and says it will fight for liberation of all “the land of Palestine.”

In the latest iteration of its stance, senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday the group would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip along the pre-1967-borders.

Though he again spoke of a truce, it was also a rare suggestion that Hamas could dissolve its armed wing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to destroy Hamas after the militants’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel. Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected the creation of a Palestinian state and, critics say, worked to severely undermine the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority that has recognized Israel.

Here’s a look at some of the nuances in Hamas’ positions, in the past and now:

UNITY TALKS

In 2006, after Hamas won Palestinian legislative elections, it entered talks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas over a unity government. Amid the negotiations, Ismail Haniyeh — who today is Hamas’ top political leader — said the group supported a Palestinian state along the 1967 lines “at this stage, but in return for a cease-fire, not recognition.”

The two sides eventually reached a deal under which the unity government, including Hamas, would “respect” the Palestinian Authority’s peace agreements with Israel. It was a formula that allowed Hamas to avoid accepting the accords and recognizing Israel.

Israel and the U.S. refused to recognize the unity government and imposed economic sanctions. The government quickly collapsed amid fighting between Hamas and Abbas’ Fatah faction — ending with Hamas’ 2007 takeover of Gaza.

In 2008, then-political head of Hamas Khaled Mashaal said it would accept a state in the West Bank and Gaza along with a 10-year truce with Israel. He rejected ever recognizing Israel, but he suggested Hamas would accede to a permanent peace accord with Israel if Palestinians accepted one in a referendum.

Hamas and Abbas’ PA have had multiple rounds of unity talks ever since, often emerging with variations in phrasing on Hamas’ stance. Every time, unity efforts have been wrecked by the factions’ own bitter rivalry over power and the West’s refusal to accept any government that includes Hamas unless it expressly recognizes Israel.

THE NEW 2017 ‘CHARTER’

After years of internal discussions, Hamas came out with a new political platform in 2017 that presented a dramatic change in tone from its original charter, issued in 1988.

The 1988 charter presented the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in stark religious terms. It spoke of “our struggle against the Jews,” insisted the land belonged to Muslims and declared that jihad, or holy war, was the only way to solve the Palestinian question.

The 2017 document dropped much of that religious and antisemitic rhetoric and instead presented its cause in terms of human rights, including the right of refugees to return and the right to resist occupation. It said its fight wasn’t against Jews but against Zionism, which it called a “colonial” project that had taken Palestinians’ land and repressed their freedoms.

The document enshrined Hamas’s quasi-acceptance of a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It said such a state, with Jerusalem as its capital and the return of Palestinian refugees, was a “national consensus.”

Still, it said it rejects “any alternative to the full and complete liberation of Palestine, from the river to the sea.” That area includes what is now Israel, and in the context of Hamas’ agenda, such language is seen by Israel as a call for its destruction.
