Sarajevo Old Town (Bascarsija)

As soon as we leave our starting point, our office at Besarina Čikma 5 in the heart of the old town of Sarajevo, first stop of the walk is Baščaršija square and its most interesting symbol, fountain, Sebilj .

Next stop is Kazandžiluk street and story of origins of copper and tin industry in Sarajevo.

Bravadžiluk street in 16th century used to be heart of production of locks and padlocks and that is how it got the name (brava = lock). Today however is home to some of the finest Bosnian food places – Ćevabdžinicas and Buregdžinicas.

We will continue towards Vijećnica (Sarajevo city hall) and walk over Šeher-ćehaja bridge with stories about Yellow and White Bastions including a photo stop at famous Inat Kuća (House of Spite).

In the very vicinity of Vijećnica, there is a Sarajevo Brewery which was founded on May 24th, 1864, and historians consider it to be the oldest industrial plant in Bosnia and Herzegovina and charming Franciscan monastery which is a “must” while learning about the city.

Next stop will be the oldest mosque in Sarajevo, Imperial mosque which will provide a unique  insight into traditions of Islam in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Just bridge further down the Miljacka river, we shall arrive to Atmejdan park, Latin bridge and assassination point of Franz Ferdinand where we will learn the inevitable story of the WWI.

After WII it is time for a bit older history and a stroll in Gazihusref-beys covered market-bazaar (Gazi Husref-beys bezistan) which was built in early 16th century for trading reasons still today serves the original purpose.

History of Jewish people in Sarajevo and visit to Jewish Synagogue is unmissable part of the tour. Once expelled from Spain in 1492 majority of Sephardic Jews settled regions of the Ottoman Empire, amongst which Sarajevo and Bosnia have hosted large numbers.

Kazandziluk

Sarajevo City Centre

Next in line of religions who have dominated life and culture of Sarajevo, are Bosnian catholics, and next site on the visit is their greatest temple in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cathedral of Sacred Jesus Hearth.

Just at the square, if you look around, you will notice red stains on the ground. Those are the worldwide known Sarajevo Roses .

Couple of minutes away from pedestrian zone we will be welcomed by local farmers at green “ Markale Pijaca “. Markale was on front page two times during the 1990ies, due to massacres that took place during the siege of Sarajevo. T

Few steps away will take us to the junction of Mula Mustafa Bašeskija, Titova and Ferhadija street where we we will make a short stop at the Eternal flame (Vječna vatra), favourite meeting place of locals which will give us a chance to soak up some good local atmosphere.

As we continue with the amazing European Jerusalem experience, our next stop will be just a perfect way to display the rich history of religious and cultural diversity that is simply breathtaking – The Orthodox Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos.

Afterwards, we will admire the Hotel Europe which is both and hotel and historic building. Built and opened in the early days of what turned out to be a 40-year Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Eternal Flame

> Eternal Flame: symbol of fallen fighters and civilians in World War II, but also a symbol of life and vibrancy of the city.

Sarajevo Old Town

Summer garden of this hotel Europe which is an Austro-Hungarian building was actually built on top of the remains of Tašlihan , place constructed in Ottoman period. Two historical places on one sight. Tašlihan was one of three caravanserais in Sarajevo, which served both travellers and horses.

We will go through endowment of Gazi Husref bey, by visiting the Gazi Husref beys mosque , Clock tower famously called Sahat Kula and its belonging building Muvekithana , Madrassa , Khanikah and Library , first public toilette in Sarajevo, Imaret kitchen (once serving only poor), burial place of Gazi Husrev-bey and few other locations important for understanding this complex which is biggest in the Balkans.

Morića Han  will be our next stop and this is certainly one of those corners where you can imagine yourself being in a tale from 1001 Nights Middle Eastern Book . This inn is Sarajevo’s only remaining caravanserai, a place where merchant caravans could find accommodation during the Ottoman period.

Old Orthodox Church , the oldest religious structure in the city will be our last stop for a day and will offer you a shocking experience of “time travel” as soon as you place your foot in its stunning garden.

Funky Tours – The best tour guides in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is an amazing country with so much to offer and luckily I discovered Funky Tours on Tripadvisor. This is truly a fantastic company with an extensive selection of tours to create your adventure.

Funky Tours is headed up by Ema Konakovic and I cannot thank her and the team enough for giving us wonderful memories of Sarajevo and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Emails are always responded within a short period of time and the tour guides always arrived on time at our hotel and most importantly, were so knowledgeable and open to questions during our tours. Sammi and Mustapha you were great. Special thanks to Almir Ale Ahmetagic, a veteran of the Bosnian War who moved us to tears with his experiences. My husband and I feel we have said goodbye to friends.

Stop dithering and book your adventure in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Funky Tours will make it an amazing experience for you.

100% recommend. Excellent tour

We took the siege tour and were incredibly impressed. Mustafa, our guide, lived through the siege and his personal insight was fascinating.

Whilst it is possible to visit the locations on your own, without a knowledgeable guide you just would not have the same understanding of the siege.

We also did the free walking tour and had a great 3 hours with Ahmed who took us to all the main sights around the old town, where he explained Sarajevo’s long and fascinating history.

The office staff are also incredibly friendly and helpful – even taking the time to walk us into town to point out some good restaurants.

I wish we had more time in Sarajevo to do more trips with Funky Tours but I hope to be back soon! 100% recommend this company.

Quality touch on city tour

We did the walking tour around Sarajevo and Ahmed was fantastic! Super knowledgeable and friendly, even took us out for some local treats for my birthday. Thanks again!!

All that is funky–and then some.

As I researched possible tours of the Balkans, I wanted to avoid large groups travelling by coach. I also wanted an itinerary that would balance exploration of nature, culture, and history. Funky Tours looked especially promising.

After recently completing my tour, I am happy to say that Funky Tours far exceeded my high expectations.

Emir was our expert guide and driver, but he was also so much more. He shared his wide and deep knowledge of the region and its history, vivid anecdotes from personal experience, and a delightful sense of humor.

I admired his candor and thoughtfulness in addressing difficult, sometimes political questions, and marveled at his resourcefulness as a troubleshooter who nimbly addressed any and all issues throughout the trip.

Our itinerary was rich and fascinating, often taking us off the beaten track for immersion experiences that helped burst the tourist bubble. I should add that the tour struck a fine balance between comfort and physical activity. Hotel accommodations were excellent, the van was comfortable, and meals provided by the tour were tasty.

At the same time, I enjoyed our walking tours and light hiking in beautiful natural surroundings. Funky Tours also wisely combines structured days with plenty of free time for exploration. As much as I recommend Emir, I have no doubt that everyone at Funky Tours is a capable professional. Just keep in mind that whatever your associations with “funky”, mine are fun, informative, mind-expanding, and first rate.

Sarajevo Sights History

Miljacka River and City Hall in Sarajevo, BIH

Before setting off on a Sarajevo City Tour, it helps to know a bit about the history. Although it’s past is complex and often difficult, having a basic understanding of these events is essential when sightseeing Sarajevo.

Early Sarajevo History

Civilizations have resided in the area of Sarajevo since the Neolithic Butmir Culture, eventually followed by the Illyrians. The Kingdom of Bosnia was formed in the 12th century, when the town was called Vrhbosna (top of Bosnia). However, it wasn’t until the Ottomans arrived in the 1400s that the city of Sarajevo was established. During that time, Sarajevo expanded rapidly. Accepting of people from all cultures and religions, the city welcomed Muslims, Catholics, Orthodox Christians and Jews.

Ottoman Rule in Sarajevo

The 16th century was the golden age of Ottoman rule. Sarajevo flourished; there was a water system and bathhouses, a clock tower and library, schools and religious buildings. Sarajevo reigned as the biggest and one of the wealthiest cities in the region, with a population of 80,000 residents.

However, the oncoming demise of the Ottoman Empire led to the invasion of Sarajevo. The city was attacked and destroyed by fire in 1697. The next 200 years saw further decline, as Sarajevo was devastated by the Plague, more fires and war.

Sarajevo during the Austro-Hungarian Empire

In 1878, The Austro-Hungarian Empire took control of Sarajevo under the Treaty of Berlin and the subsequent Battle of Sarajevo. Under the Catholic Habsburgs, Sarajevo saw significant changes and expansion. New structures were built using modern Western architecture, while parts of the historic Ottoman city remained. Prominent buildings – like the Sacred Heart Cathedral, the National Museum and City Hall – were constructed.

Although Sarajevo appeared to be thriving again, there was an underground movement to overthrow the Austro-Hungarian Empire and create a united Slavic kingdom. In 1914, a conspirator named Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand (the next heir of the Austro-Hungarian throne) in the streets of Sarajevo. The assassination sparked a series of events, which ultimately led to World War I.

A tower bearing the Olympic Rings still stands in Sarajevo from the 1984 Winter Olympics

In the peace treaty that ended World War I, Sarajevo became part of the newly established Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During the Second World War, Nazi Germany occupied Sarajevo and eliminated the Jewish population. At the end of the war, Sarajevo fell within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which was led by President Josip Broz Tito.

Yugoslavia was comprised of six states: Bosnia Herzegovina (of which Sarajevo was the capital), Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia. Belgrade served as Yugoslavia’s national capital. Regardless of the ethnic and religious differences, President Tito promoted unity.

To the west of the historic Sarajevo city center, block apartments were rapidly built in an area named Novo Sarajevo. The city grew – in both population and importance. In 1984, Sarajevo hosted the Winter Olympics, a supreme honor for the city and the country of Yugoslavia.

Siege Of Sarajevo

Sights of Sarajevo Bosnia

After the death of Tito in 1980, the government struggled to keep Yugoslavia together. The impending collapse of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s led to individual states seeking independence from the republic. The inner conflict ultimately triggered a series of brutal wars. When Bosnia & Herzegovina declared independence – and named Sarajevo capital – the city came under attack, first by the Yugoslav People’s Army, then by the Army of Republika Srpska (the Bosnian Serb Army).

The Serbian-led Siege of Sarajevo lasted for 1,425 days – from April 5, 1992 until February 29, 1996. Situated in the hills that encircle Sarajevo, the Bosnian Serb Army besieged Sarajevo with gunfire and mortar blasts. An average of 329 shells hit the city every day, with an astounding 3,777 falling in one day (July 22, 1993). Supplies were blocked from Sarajevo – including weapons, food, medicine, water and electricity. Civilians and cultural sights were targeted – and the Sarajevo library containing invaluable manuscripts was destroyed.

During the Sarajevo siege, the Bosnian War raged on throughout the region. The historic city of Mostar was also under siege and, in the small town of Srebrenica, there was a horrific massacre of 8,000 Bosniaks (now recognized as genocide). Meanwhile, neighboring Croatia was also at war with Serbs, Montenegrins and for a time, Bosniaks.

Dayton Accords

The Siege of Sarajevo resulted in the deaths of more than 12,000 people, yet the Bosnian Serb Army never took control of the city. The Dayton Accords – an agreement between Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia – officially ended the war in 1996. Sarajevo once again began a period of rebuilding, this time with the help of foreign aid…and a lot of determination and even more patience.

Sarajevo Today

Sunset in Sarajevo, BIH

The city has taken great strides since the war. The Sarajevo City Center shopping mall is one of the biggest in the region and the modern Avaz Twist Tower stands as one of the tallest skyscraper in the Balkans. Sarajevo hosts the annual Sarajevo Film Festival and the Mount Trebevic Cable Car was inaugurated in 2018.

26 Top Sarajevo Sights

Views of Sarajevo

Due to it’s triumphant and turbulent past, Sarajevo is evocative. The Sarajevo Old Town pedestrian-only streets are bustling with tourists buying copper Bosnian coffee sets, while locals can be found drinking the potent coffee in quaint cafes. The lively Sarajevo markets are packed with produce, cheap trendy clothing and hand-knitted wool socks. Meanwhile, Sarajevo monuments document the human atrocities that occurred in the city and region.

Sarajevo displays an eclectic mix of architectural styles – from the elegant buildings of the Austro-Hungarian era to concrete block structures of the Socialist era. The state of the buildings is varied – from dilapidated shells to brand new structures. On the road, the Sarajevo public transportation fleet is inclusive of rickety-and-rusted trams to modern carriages donated from other countries.

Austro-Hungarian architecture in Sarajevo, Bosnia

While, at first glance, the city looks and feels normal, the whispers of war are always nearby. It’s impossible to tour Sarajevo and not acknowledge what happened on the streets. Around almost every corner there are shadows of the Siege of Sarajevo.

The city is scarred by the war – visitors can see it in the bullet ridden buildings and the neglected remnants of the 1984 Olympics. Hundreds of simple white gravestones stand in hillside cemeteries – the etched dates of year born and year deceased much too close together. Unemployment is rampant – and beggars are part of the landscape. Young children sit cross-legged on the main pedestrian street singing for coins. Old women with sad eyes push their empty hands in front of strangers.

20 years after the Siege of Sarajevo: A photo essay

Despite the wounds, there is a spirited side of Sarajevo that is also unmissable. Locals gather together in parks and in smoky cafes. Young couples holding hands sneak into hidden corners. Shop owners dish out food for stray cats. And people generously pass spare change and cigarettes into outstretched hands.

Sarajevo Clock Tower

MAP . The tall slender Old Clock Tower, a National Monument, stands next to the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque – as it has since the 17th century. The clock strikes midnight at sunset…which is when Muslims pray the Maghrib prayer.

Directions : Continue walking west, past the Gazi Husrev-beg’s Bezistan market hall, which is now occupied mostly by souvenir shops. Take a peek inside if you would like, then continue walking to the Meeting of Cultures monument.

#11 Sarajevo Meeting Of Cultures

Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures monument

MAP . A symbolic and understated monument in the middle of the street, the Meeting of Cultures monument recognizes and celebrates Sarajevo’s major influences. The line across the street is essentially where two very different cultures – the Islamic Ottomans and Christian Austro-Hungarian – meet together.

Directions : Continue walking west. Pass the Sarajevo Museum of Crimes Against Humanity (which is an excellent place to learn more about the horrific events and crimes during the war) and walk to the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

#12 Sarajevo Cathedral Of The Sacred Heart

Sarajevo Cathedral

MAP . The Catholic Sarajevo Cathedral, which features Neo-Gothic and Romanesque Revival styles, was built between 1884 and 1889. The two bell towers rise to the height of 140-feet. Fronted by an open plaza, the church was left particularly exposed during the Siege of Sarajevo and was severely damaged. The plaza now features a monument to Pope John Paul II, who was a vocal supporter of Sarajevo during the war, and an iconic resin-filled Sarajevo Rose.

#13 Sarajevo Roses

Sarajevo Rose on sidewalk

MAP . During the Sarajevo War, mortar blasts left large indentations on sidewalks. Post War, rather than immediately repairing the damaged areas, the marks were filled in with red resin and named Sarajevo Roses. As time has passed, many of the sidewalks have been replaced and only a few Roses of Sarajevo remain today.

Directions : From the Sarajevo Cathedral plaza, walk north along the west side of the church to Mula Mustafe Baseskije. Turn left (west) and walk to the Markale produce market.

MAP . The Pijaca Markale covered produce market operates as usual now, but during the war it endured two bombings that targeted unsuspecting Sarajevo civilians. The first bomb, in February 1994, killed 67 people. The second, in August 1995, killed 43. These civilian casualties are said to have prompted NATO to intervene in bringing an end to the war. A plaque in the back of the market bears the names of the victims.

Directions : From the market, continue walking west to Gajev Trg. Turn left (south) and walk past the indoor food market, City Market, then walk into the open space, Trg Oslobodenje – Alija Izetbegovic. The square has changed names numerous times and was once the site of the main railway station and customs office; today it is named in honor of the city’s WWII liberation and after the first president of independent Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the southeast corner of the square is an Orthodox Church.

#15 Orthodox Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos

Orthodox Church in Sarajevo, BIH at sunset

MAP . Built in the 1860s, the massive Orthodox Church features a classic cross plan and five domes. The soaring central tower, which exceeded the height of many minarets, was a point of contention with some Muslims when it was built. Guests can visit the inside of the church for a small fee.

Directions : Leave the square on the north side, heading west on Ferhadija. Walk two blocks west to the Eternal Flame.

#16 Vjecna Vatra: Sarajevo Eternal Flame

Eternal Flame in Sarajevo, BIH

MAP . Marking the Old Town western boundary, the Eternal Flame honors the fallen soldiers and civilian victims from World War II. The flame burns continuously. Pro Tip : Adjacent to the Eternal Flame Memorial is the entrance to the Hecco Deluxe Hotel , which features a rooftop cafe with outdoor seating. Consider stopping in for a coffee break and enjoy the stunning views over the Sarajevo rooftops.

Directions : From the Eternal Flame, walk west on Marsala Tita Street to Veliki Park on the north side of the street.

#17 Veliki Park – Sarajevo Monuments

Sarajevo, Bosnia i Herzegovina Memorial to the Children Fountain

MAP . This Sarajevo park, Veliki Park, is home to poignant memorials and ancient tombstones. The following are found along the southern edge of the park – from east to west – along Marsala Tita Street.

Ottoman Gravestones

Ottoman tombstones in Sarajevo, BIH

Throughout the city there are many Ottoman-style gravestone markers – which feature carved turbans on top. Some of the historic markers, which are found in parks and cemeteries, date to the 17th century.

Srebrenica Monument: Man Calling To Son

Srebrenica Monument: Man Calling To Son in Sarajevo, BIH

This Srebrenica Monument in Sarajevo pays tribute to the victims of genocide in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica. The sign reads, “One of the most horrific scenes of the Srebrenica genocide against innocent Bosniak population is a scene when the father Ramo call to his son Nermin to surrender to the Serbian soldiers, as allegedly they will not do any harm to them. The exhumation team found Ramo and his son Nermin in a mass grave near Srebrenica in 2008.”

Memorial to the Children of Sarajevo

Sarajevo Memorial, Bosnia

The heart wrenching Memorial to the Children of Sarajevo sits beautifully in Veliki Park and honors the more than 1,500 children who were killed during the Siege of Sarajevo. In the basin are the footprints of the younger siblings of the children who died. Today, kids play in the area around the fountain. Another memorial names the children in Sarajevo who were killed during the war.

Sarajevo Rose

Another Rose of Sarajevo is found on the sidewalk, not too far west from the Memorial to the Children of Sarajevo.

Directions : From the park, continue walking west on Marsala Tita Street. At Ali Pasha’s Mosque, veer to the left and continue walking on the southwest diagonal street. Across the park to your right, you can see the Avaz Twist Tower in the distance. At the stoplight, where the street curves to the west, you will see the new modern Sarajevo City Center Mall. Just past the mall, on the south side of the street, is a large Medieval Tombstone – and behind it is the Sarajevo Parliament Building. Keep walking west along the street, which has changed names here to Zmaja od Bosne.

#18 Sniper Alley Sarajevo – Zmaja od Bosne

MAP . The most infamous of all Sarajevo streets, Zmaja od Bosne is the main thoroughfare from the Sarajevo Airport to the historic center – and, during the war, it was nicknamed Sniper Alley. Serbian snipers positioned in the hillsides would target people walking on the street. An estimated 225 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured on Sniper Alley during the Siege.

Directions : Walk west on Zmaja od Bosne to the boxy, yellow Hotel Holiday.

#19 Hotel Holiday (former Sarajevo Holiday Inn Hotel)

Iconic Holiday Inn Hotel built for 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo

MAP . The bold, yellow Holiday Inn was built for the 1984 Olympics as a landmark modern hotel. However, it was during the Siege of Sarajevo that the hotel became known worldwide. Used first as a quasi-headquarters for the Bosnian Serb Army at the very beginning of the war, snipers stood in the windows and shot at protesters who gathered across the street in front of Parliament.

Then, when journalists came to cover the war, they used the hotel as a base to report – and view – the war in Sarajevo. Located on a dangerous section of Sniper Alley, the hotel was constantly barraged by bullets. Today, the building no longer bears the logo of the hotel chain, but is open for business under a similar name: Holiday Hotel .

ICAR Canned Beef Monument, Sarajevo

Directions : From the Holiday Hotel, continue walking west past the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the walkway on your left (before you get to the BiH History Museum) turn left and walk south. The walkway passes the notable Tito Café, which is a good place to stop, rest your feet and have a beverage. Be sure to check out the Yugonostalgia that covers the walls, the military tank in the yard and the ICAR Canned Beef Monument (an art installment mocking the canned mystery meat provided by international aid during the war).

Walk south to the Miljacka River, then turn left (east) onto the Woodrow Wilson Promenade. Walk 600 meters along the tree-lined promenade to the next bridge, Suada and Olga Bridge.

#20 Suada and Olga Bridge: Sarajevo Romeo and Juliet Bridge

Romeo and Juliet Bridge Sarajevo

MAP . Not an exceptional bridge by sight, the Suada and Olga Bridge saw two historic events during the war. Suada Dilberovic and Olga Sucic, who the bridge is named after, are considered to be the first two victims of the Sarajevo War. They were both killed on the bridge by snipers during a peace rally on April 5, 1992. A fading plaque on the bridge commemorates the event.

The bridge also has the nickname of the Romeo and Juliet Bridge. In 1993, a young couple – one Bosniak, the other Bosnian Serb – tried to escape the war so they could be together. Unsuccessful in their departure, they were shot and killed while running across the bridge. Their embraced corpses remained on the bridge for several days before it was safe to move them.

Directions : Cross Suada and Olga Bridge then turn left (east) and continue walking alongside the river to the Skenderija Bridge. As you walk along the Miljacka, listen for the call to prayer to ring out from the speakers of the many minarets…then ricochet down the shallow riverbed.

#21 Skenderija Bridge

Skenderija Bridge Sarajevo

MAP . The picturesque Skenderija footbridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel (the engineer of the world-famous Eiffel Tower in Paris ). Today, couples use the bridge for Love Locks.

Directions : Continue walking east along the river, passing the Sarajevo National Theater (with arches and columns on the north bank) and the Ashkenazi Synagogue (south bank) until you arrive at the arched Latin Bridge.

#22 Latin Bridge: Famous Sarajevo Bridge

Famous Latin Bridge in Sarajevo, BIH

MAP . Called the Latin Bridge for the many Catholics who used to reside in the area, the Ottoman bridge is one of the oldest in Sarajevo. However, the reason the Latin Bridge is famous is because it was the site of an event that changed the world. In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated near the north end of the bridge; many consider it to be the act that started World War I.

Directions : Continue walking east along the river to the grandiose striped building, City Hall and Library.

#23 Sarajevo City Hall and Library

City Hall and Library in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

MAP . The original City Hall and Sarajevo Library building was built in 1896. That building, however, was destroyed by artillery and fire in 1992. It is estimated that 2 million written documents, some rare and irreplaceable, were lost. It took more than two decades to rebuild the structure. The building was reconstructed in the original style and reopened in 2014.

A plaque at the front reads: ‘On this place Serbian criminals in the night of 25 th -26 th August 1992 set on fire the National and University’s Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina; over 2 million books, periodicals and documents vanished in the flame. Do not forget. Remember and warn!’

Directions : At the east end of the Sarajevo City Hall is the Seher-Cehaja Bridge.

#24 Seher-Cehaja Bridge

Seher-Cehaja Bridge Sarajevo

MAP . Of the 13 bridges the Ottomans built in Sarajevo, the Seher-Cehaja Bridge is considered to be the prettiest. The name translates to Mayor’s Bridge.

Directions : Cross Bentbasa Street to the north of Sehercehaja Bridge and turn right (east). Veer to the left onto Nadmlini Street and follow it north to the Kovaci Cemetery.

Detour! – or Sarajevo 2-Day Exploration

Abandoned Olympic bobsled track in Sarajevo

Ambitious travelers may want to make a detour south of the river to a few sights before continuing uphill to the final two stops on our free Sarajevo Walking Tour. Sarajevo tourist attractions on the south side of the river include the Sarajevo Trebevic Cable Car (which takes visitors up the hill to the Abandoned Bobsled Track ), the Alifakovac Cemetery and District (which provides views across the river valley to the Old town), the Sarajevo Brewery and the Emperor’s Mosque.

At the bend in the river, visitors will find a wooden bridge and river view cafes. Once you finish adventuring, return to the Sehercehaja Bridge and continue to the Kovaci Cemetery.

Pro Tip : Visitors spending two days in Sarajevo can spend the entire second day exploring this part of Sarajevo!

#25 Kovaci Cemetery Sarajevo

Cemetery in Sarajevo, BIH

MAP . Several large graveyards, like Kovaci Cemetery, are found near the city center. During the war, desperate Sarajevans cut down many trees in order to use the wood for cooking and as a source of heat in the winter. The clearing of forests left fields of open spaces, which were soon turned into graveyards.

The Kovaci Cemetery – Martyrs’ Memorial Cemetery – was the main graveyard used for victims of the Siege of Sarajevo and the sloping, hillside site features thousands of white gravestones. The country’s first president, Alija Izetbegovic, is also buried here, under the small dome.

Directions : Stroll through the cemetery – and note the similar dates on the gravestones. Exit the site on the trail to the east and follow it uphill to the Yellow Bastion.

#26 Yellow Bastion: Best View Of Sarajevo

Sarajevo Views

MAP . The Yellow Bastion dates to the 18th century. The remains are part of the Sarajevo city wall that was built in 1739. Today the Bastion is a park the provides panoramic views over Sarajevo. Although the city is often draped in a blanket of fog with only the tips of minarets and bell towers to puncture through the layer of haze, the Sarajevo city view from the Yellow Bastion is spectacular.

That ends our free Sarajevo Walking Tour!   But wait, there’s more…

What You Will Need For Our Sarajevo Walking Tour

Street art found in Sarajevo depicts images from the 1984 Winter Olympics

While you don’t need much to complete our self-guided Free Walking Tour Sarajevo, it will be more enjoyable with these items!

Comfortable Shoes

While most of our 5-mile walking tour of Sarajevo is flat, there is a small portion that ventures uphill. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes . I like wearing Skechers for city walks – and Kris prefers wearing shoes by Merrell .

Travel Camera

The city is very photogenic! Rather than using a phone to capture Sarajevo pictures we recommend upgrading to a real camera . We use a DSLR Canon Rebel with a 18-135mm lens . However, if you are looking for something smaller, we suggest using a Canon Powershot , which can fit in a pocket, still takes great shots and is an excellent budget camera option!

Sarajevo Weather Gear

Depending on the time of year you visit Sarajevo, you will likely need sunscreen …or a winter jacket or a raincoat ! A wide-brimmed travel hat and travel umbrella are always a good idea, too.

WiFi Connection

When using our Self-Guided Sarajevo Walking Tour, you will need a WiFi Connection . Contact your cell phone provider to inquire about adjusting to an international plan – or consider purchasing a mobile hotspot. We use this GlocalMe Hotspot – and love it! We can connect multiple devices, use SIM cards or purchase eSIM data online and are connected wherever we go!

Bosnia Travel Insurance

Trip Insurance from a reliable company can protect travelers from flight cancellations and lost luggage , but many plans may also cover unexpected illnesses and unfortunate injuries.

Sarajevo is the Capital of Bosnia Herzegovina and the country’s largest city.

Getting There : Visitors can get to Sarajevo by car, bus, train or plane. For the best deals on flights , begin your search on SkyScanner .

Where To Stay in Sarajevo

During our trip to Sarajevo, we stayed in a well-located Airbnb apartment. We often stay in holiday apartments, as they usually cost less than hotels and have amenities and more space.

Hotels in Sarajevo Old Town

Visitors who would rather stay in traditional accommodations have plenty of choices of Sarajevo hotels. For a classic hotel stay, consider the Holiday Hotel , but for something closer to town, check out the rooms at Hotel Sana or Hotel President .

It was a super interesting tour. Adis English is flawless and I had no trouble understanding him. His good humor made the tour even more enjoyable. One of my favorite Walking Tours so far.

We did the free Walking Tour with Adis in Sarajevo. As we were a pretty small group of people, we had lots of opportunities to ask questions and Adis told us many little and often personal stories about bosnian people, traditions, e.g. also the habits of his grandparents or people living in the countryside. He took all the time we needed and gave us a great Overview of Sarajevo and bosnian culture!

We booked this tour after a great free-walking-tour of Sarajevo the day before. This tour was even better; a lot of detailed information about the Sarajevo siege, answers to all our questions, and leaving us with a good understanding of the war and current situation. Adis is a great guide, providing detailed information about the Tunnel (museum), and visit to a viewing point that you would not normally visit. Worth the money even just for the time and driver services, but all the more so with the great information and personal stories from Adis!

MairavAndel

Hello everyone! Loved this tour and not in the least thanks to Adis, who is a fantastic person. In addition to that, he's also very knowledgeable and no question is off place for him. Feel free, get a thorough and honest explanation, and have fun. All of that is Adis.

Great tour and answered all of our questions and gave a more custom tailored tour based on our questions. Was very helpful and funny and gave some great recommendations. Would definitely recommend this tour!

Adis was knowledgeable and easy to get along with, you’ll definitely learn a lot on the tour.

Adis was a great guide! He was very open and willing to answer all of our questions. The tour covers A LOT of history but there really is just so much to unpack in Sarajevo. Really enjoyable day!

Adis is a fun and competent guide. Thank you for the tour!

Adis was really nice guy, funny and give interesting informations about the country and the city. It’s necessary to do the tour with him! Hvala adis!

Excellent tour! I was a nyc free tour guide for 6 years and I’ll tell you that Adis knows how to make sure his group enjoys the tour, I completely approve and recommend him as your go-to in Sarajevo :)

Adis is a super friendly local guide, full of special stories and really keen to create a special experience for everyone. We did the free walking tour, which was one of the best I had ever experienced, and decided to do the Siege of Sarajevo tour the next day. I can only recommend to do any tour with Adis, he will be a really fun and friendly host and excited to show you his home town.

Adis is a true local guide, who knows pretty much everything about Sarajevo’s history and its hidden gems, speaks English proficiently, and can answer pretty much any question related to his hometown. Highly recommended.

Adis is a perfect guide. An incredibly friendly and open man with incredible knowledge for not only Sarajevo but all history in general. Every question no matter how difficult he had extremely deep knowledge that covered all of europes history. A perfect free walking tour experience.

Adis created a warm and fun atmosphere among our group members, and we learnt plenty about Sarajevo! Would warmly recommend.

REMEMBERING SREBRENICA GENOCIDE

Customer reviews.

“A very thought provoking and insightful tour with a veteran of the war, who not only witnessed the events of 1,425 days of siege, but lived and endured each one. If you want to gain a better understanding of the reasons for the war, the rationale for the siege, as well as something of what it was like for the inhabitants this is an excellent way to begin.”

This tour was excellent and the tour guide was the best we had for any of the trips we did during our visit to Krakow. The guide was full of interesting information and spoke excellent English. He spoke clearly and guided the group around at the right speed so that we could take photographs and have a good look at everything. The tour was very reasonably priced and the guide was clearly passionate about the subject. I didn't catch the guides name but he said English speakers usually call him Jack. I would highly recommend this tour.

Our guide Maciej was one of the best tour guides we've ever had. So dynamic and engaging. We really enjoyed this walking tour and found ourselves discussing what we had learned in the days afterward as we strolled through beautiful Krakow. Highly recommended.

We met Max and his yellow umbrella as instructed and headed off for our two and a half hours Walkative Tour or should I say Talkative tour....because that boy Max really knows his stuff and has a lot to say about everything on the tour. What a great tour guide and what a pleasurable couple of hours we had doing the tour. Would thoroughly recommend this tour and if I had had another day free in Krakow I would have definitely taken part in one of the other tours on offer. We did also book in and do the Schindler's Factory tour after having done the first tour of the Old Town and although this wasn't a 'free' tour this I would also thoroughly recommend.  It seems all the tour guides from 'walkative tours' really know their stuff. Well done to everyone involved.

Took the tour and thoroughly enjoyed it - informative and gave an insight to the history of Krakow, as well as contextualising the culture of Poles and Cracowians. Great weather helped, but there was great balance of information, humour and personal comments about the locations.

Jakub was an absolute star in the tour. I have taken many walking tours as a way to start my visit in a city and this was one of the best! Highly recommended!

Last weekend we had three tours with Walkative and would recommend it to anyone travelling to Krakow! All guides were really funny and friendly, and had all sort of interesting information to share. First we did the Street Art Tour with Navia und after we were so enthusiastic about this tour we decided to go for the Old Town Tour with Damian and the Macarbre Tour with Jaczek. Can only recommend the tours and guides, and if we come back to Krakow, we will definitely do a tour again.

I did 2 tours in one day they were so great! First the old town with Mario and then the Jewish quarter with Ania. I have done free walking tours all over Europe and these tours were the best-above and beyond fantastic. Both guides were native Polish, well educated, extremely knowledgeable, and passionate about the tour subject matters. They do these tours full time and are very excited to share their history and culture. I really can’t recommend this company enough! They offer a wide variety of tours. I wish I could do them all!

Came across talkative by accident by overhearing the last 5 minutes of one of their tours at the Gestapo HQ. We decided this was a tour guide not to be missed so we got further details and decided to join him the following day for a most informative and interesting tour of Nowa Huta, the planned communist city that never was (It became a district of Krakow rather than a distinct city).Far and away the best of 5 tours we did in Krakow. This was all down to our terrific guide "Big Tom" Tomasz. His enthusiasm and passion ruled the day! A very personal, detailed and engrossing 4 hours of his shared knowledge and experiences. He lives and breathes his knowledge of and love for Krakow. The experience was like being shown around by a friend and was more conversational in style than a prepared tour script. (...) Thank you Tom!

When arriving in Warsaw and looking for things to do we came across Walkative and decided to go with the communist Warsaw tour as we where staying in the old town. It was a great decision as there was so much to learn about post war Warsaw and Poland up to the current day. We got to see much more of the city then we would have just being average tourists and the speak had so much energy and knowledge she really topped the experience! Would highly recommend if you love walking tours!!!!

We spent a pleasant two hours walking around Wroclaw, visiting significant historical sites to do with the Jewish community and the Second World War. Our guide Lukasz was very knowledgeable and informative and also very friendly. We learnt a lot in the time we spent with him on the tour and saw parts of the city that we wouldn’t have probably come across wandering on our own. I’d highly recommend this tour and would give Lukasz five stars for his knowledge and delivery of the subject matter! Thanks

CCJ 389E: Spring break trip to Bosnia

A small group of students from SOU embarked on a recent transatlantic journey to explore Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia as part of their Criminology and Criminal Justice study away class CCJ 389E: War, Genocide, Peace & Reconciliation (open to ALL MAJORS). The fall term 2023 class concluded with the eight-day study abroad component during spring break 2024.

Throughout the fall term, students in the class immersed themselves in the rich history of the region, including its significant roles in WWI, WWII and the Bosnian war of the 1990s, delving into topics of war crimes, genocide and the region’s efforts toward healing and reconciliation. This groundwork set the stage for the experiential part of the class: the journey to Bosnia.

The group traveled together to Sarajevo, where they enjoyed a welcome dinner at an amazing traditional Bosnian restaurant in the old town. The next morning, they embarked on a walking tour of the city – the architecture a blend of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav influences. The city’s rich cultural tapestry is woven with mosques, synagogues and churches standing side-by-side, reflecting its diverse heritage. Despite its past conflicts, Sarajevo’s resilient spirit is reflected through the incredible warmth and hospitality of its people.

Following the city tour, participants in the trip were deeply moved by their visit to a museum depicting the harrowing impact of the Sarajevo siege on the city’s children. In a poignant display of solidarity, the museum also features artifacts from children currently residing in war-torn regions like Ukraine and Gaza. The SOU group’s exploration continued at Galerija 11-7-95, a photographic tribute to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. Meeting with Tarik Samarah, the photographer and founder, was a humbling experience as those in the group learned about Samarah’s renowned exhibitions worldwide (such as the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C, UN Headquarters in New York, Galerie du jour in Paris, the Dutch Parliament in the Hague and London’s Westminster Abby and Tate Modern Gallery), reinforcing the importance of remembrance and fostering a future free from such atrocities.

The SOU contingent visited Srebrenica on day three. The Srebrenica genocide, occurring in July 1995, stands as one of the darkest chapters in European history since World War II. It saw the mass murder of over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys by Bosnian Serb forces, despite the town being designated a UN safe area. The international community’s failure to prevent the atrocity highlighted the inadequacy of peacekeeping efforts during the Bosnian War.

The group’s final academic engagement in Sarajevo was a profound meeting with Dr. Hasan Nuhanović. Serving as an interpreter for the United Nations in Srebrenica during its fall to the Bosnian Serb Army, he tragically lost his entire family that day and has since dedicated himself to advocating for justice for the victims of Srebrenica. Dr. Nuhanović shared his deeply personal story with SOU students, and the group engaged in a meaningful dialogue, asking probing questions that he answered with honesty and introspection. This encounter left participants acutely aware of the enduring impact of war – as one student eloquently put it, “we only have to live it for a few days; they have to live it every day.”

Amidst the weighty academic aspects of the journey, the group found solace in the vibrant celebration of Ramadan across the country. In Sarajevo, the old town was adorned with strings of green lights, and each evening, a cannon fired a firework over the city at sundown to mark iftar and the end of the day’s fast. This signaled the bustling opening of cafes and restaurants, infusing the city with vitality, while the unwavering generosity and sense of humor among the people demonstrated their resilience in the face of adversity.

As their time in Sarajevo came to an end, the group journeyed to the enchanting city of Mostar before continuing on to Dubrovnik, Croatia, nestled along the stunning Adriatic coast. In Dubrovnik, they immersed themselves in the city’s rich history and then savored a leisurely day of shopping and soaking up the sunshine, culminating their week with relaxation and exploration.

While each student may have their own favorite moments from the trip, the overwhelming consensus is that it was truly incredible. As a faculty member, there’s nothing quite as fulfilling as guiding students on an overseas journey. Traveling with them facilitates transformative learning experiences, bridging the classroom with the real world and encourages students to step outside of their comfort zones. Witnessing their growth, curiosity and empathy throughout the journey has been truly remarkable. And as the legend goes, “Whoever drinks water from any of Sarajevo’s fountains and spouts will return to Sarajevo,” perhaps hinting at the magnetic allure of this captivating city.

Stayed tuned for next year’s CCJ 389A trip to London and Paris, focusing on historic prisons, contemporary court cases, and of course, Jack the Ripper!  For more information, please contact Dr. Alison Burke at [email protected] . All majors are welcome.
