Cape Verde is currently in a ‘state of alert’.

While the government has eased some of the restrictive measures previously in place, there are many rules members of the public still need to observe including the fact they must keep a social distance of at least 1m.

To add to this, there is the required use of Covid certificates and negative test results to access certain services and activities including gyms and nightclubs.

Here is the latest advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office at the time of publication, but this is updated regularly so ensure you check the government's guidance before flying.

Inter-island travel

There are ferry and airline connections operating between islands. If you’re travelling between islands, you’ll need to complete an online health surveillance form and present one of the following:

  • a valid Covid-19 vaccination certificate showing you are fully vaccinated
  • a Covid-19 recovery certificate showing you recovered from Covid-19 no more than 90 days before you travel
  • a negative RT-PCR test done 72 hours before departure or an antigen test done 48 hours before departure

Children aged 11 and under are exempt from these requirements.

Tests are available at health centres and cost 6500CV Escudos (around £55). You can find a list of health centres online.

Public places and services

The Cape Verde government has eased some of the restrictive measures previously in place, while maintaining the need to observe some rules on social distancing and hygiene:

  • keep a social distance of at least 1m
  • wash your hands regularly
  • respect the rules on maximum occupancy in shops and services, restaurants, cafés and on public transport

If you test positive for Covid-19, it is still mandatory to self-isolate at your accommodation or in accommodation provided by the health authorities for 14 days. If you test positive but do not have any symptoms you will still need to self-isolate for 10 days at your accommodation.

With ongoing effect:

  • Shops and stores close at 8:30pm, with the exception of pharmacies and bread shops which close at 9pm
  • Bars, open-air cafés selling alcoholic drinks, restaurants, snack bars and takeaways close at 12am in most areas but 2am in pedestrianised and beach-front areas
  • Lounge bars, night clubs and discos close at 4am
  • Cultural, recreational, sporting and leisure activities and family events, such as weddings and christening, are permitted, subject to the rules on social distancing and hygiene

Use of COVID certificates and negative test results

The required use of Covid certificates and negative test results to access certain services and activities remains, including:

  • to enter, lounge bars, night clubs and discos
  • to use gyms
  • to check in to hotels and other tourist accommodation (with the exception of children up to the age of 18 when accompanied by a parent or guardian)
  • to attend cultural, sporting, corporate, recreational and family events (with the exception of children up to the age of 18 when accompanied by a parent or guardian)

There are three Cape Verde Covid certificates – one proving the holder has been vaccinated, one proving the holder has recovered from Covid-19 and one showing evidence of a negative Covid test.

If you are resident in Cape Verde, check whether you are eligible for a Covid certificate on the Cape Verde government website .

If you are not eligible for a Cape Verde Covid certificate, you may show a negative Covid test result, obtained by one of the following means:

  • Certified PCR test done within the previous 72 hours
  • Certified antigen test done within the previous 48 hours

Demonstrating your COVID-19 status

Covid-19 proof of recovery and vaccination records can be used for internal travel and to access services in Cape Verde.

Cape Verde will only accept the UK’s letter version of proof of COVID-19 recovery and vaccination record . They will not accept digital proof.

Your NHS appointment card from a vaccination centre is not designed to be used as proof of vaccination and should not be used to demonstrate your vaccine status

Wearing a mask in Cape Verde

You must wear a face mask in enclosed spaces, such as shops and supermarkets, health centres, schools, airports and ports, cafes and restaurants and on public transport.

You should wear your face covering when you enter the building and keep it on until you leave. In cafes and restaurants, keep your mask on until you are seated.

These measures apply to everyone over the age of 10.

You may be exempt from using a face mask on medical grounds if authorised by the health authorities.

Entry requirements

Travellers from the UK need to complete an International Travel Form and show one of the following to enter the country:

  • a Covid-19 PCR test done 72 hours before departure or an antigen test (Ag-RDT) done 48 hours before departure

Children aged 11 and under are exempt from the requirements above.

REMEMBER You should not use the NHS testing service to get a test in order to facilitate your travel to another country. You should arrange to take a private test.

Before you travel, you’ll also need to complete and submit the Airport Security Tax Form (TSA) on the EASE website .

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Cape Verde.

If you have a British Citizen passport, you can enter Cape Verde as a visitor for up to 30 days without a visa.

Before you travel, you must register with the Cape Verde authorities on the EASE website and, if arriving by air, pay the Airport Security Tax (TSA) of 3,400 escudos (approximately £30). This does not apply to visitors under 2 years of age or those who are normally resident in Cape Verde.

Check with your tour operator or airline what arrangements are in place for your booking, as some tour operators and airlines may complete this on your behalf and have specific registration requirements.

Cabo Verde travel advice

Latest updates: Health – editorial update

Last updated: March 25, 2024 11:44 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, cabo verde - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Cabo Verde due to crime.

The following criminal activity occurs:

  • violent crime
  • mugging, usually at night and in isolated areas. Criminals often seek gold jewellery.
  • residential break-ins
  • sexual assault
  • petty crime

The hillside stairways connecting neighbourhoods are often the scene of assault, even in broad daylight.

Petty crime such as pickpocketing and purse snatching is common. Children often perpetrate these crimes. They particularly occur during festivals and street fairs, and in crowded outdoor market areas, particularly:

  • on the island of São Vicente, including Mindelo
  • in Praia, on the island of Santiago

Do not show signs of affluence.

Ensure your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times.

Road safety

Main roads are usually paved with cobblestones but can be narrow, winding and poorly lit.

Drivers and pedestrians should exercise caution, particularly after dark. Organized roadside assistance is not widely available.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations can occur.

Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Strong currents and powerful waves make swimming and water sports dangerous at some locations. Drownings occur every year, especially in Praia. Be vigilant on beaches and never swim alone.

Maritime transportation

Sea conditions can be treacherous.

Mariners should seek local advice prior to travel, particularly to the islands of Brava and Fogo. Advise local ports of arrival and departure times and provide relatives with your itinerary.

Public transportation

Intercity van service can be hazardous due to the bad driving habits of local residents.

Taxis hailed from hotels are generally reliable.

In Praia, city buses and taxis are reliable, clean and in good condition.

We do not make assessments on the compliance of foreign domestic airlines with international safety standards.

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are coming from a country   where yellow fever occurs.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is not recommended.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre

* It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   Limited malaria transmission may occur in this destination, but risk to travellers is very low.    Antimalarial medication is not recommended for most travellers. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:

  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.
  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows.
  • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.
  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.

If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

In this destination, rabies  may be present in some wildlife species, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who will be working directly with wildlife.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

Zika virus is a risk in this country.

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

  • Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
  • Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

For more information, see Zika virus: Pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

  • In this country, risk of  dengue  is sporadic. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue fever.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)   is a virus that attacks and impairs the immune system, resulting in a chronic, progressive illness known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

High risk activities include anything which puts you in contact with blood or body fluids, such as unprotected sex and exposure to unsterilized needles for medications or other substances (for example, steroids and drugs), tattooing, body-piercing or acupuncture.

Medical services and facilities

Basic medical procedures are available in Mindelo and Praia.

You may need medical evacuation if you need specialized care, have sustained serious injury or become severely ill.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Cabo Verde.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Cabo Verde by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Cabo Verde to explore all the legal options for the return of your child

Cabo Verdean citizens applying for a passport must present themselves at the consulate with identification document and expired passport.

The biographical data is checked with the existing records in our systems and associated with the biometric data - photography, fingerprint, and signature - previously collected with the assistance of a consular agent.

The applicant must choose the pick-up/receiving place, the priority and the mode of payment, and the process ends with the payment for the service.

Required documents

Identification document or passport (valid or expired)

Pick-up/Receiving Place

Applicants may choose to receive their passport at the place of application or at other embassies and consulates abroad or in Cabo Verde at the authorized institutions (see a list with the official). The Citizen can also choose to receive the passport at home for an additional fee.

Regular Passport

Urgency fee, home delivery fee.

In normal situations, the deadline for delivery of a passport is a maximum of 10 working days. The deadline for applications for passports of citizens with situations of irregular registrations is a maximum of 10 working days from the date the registration becomes regular. Citizens will be notified automatically by sms and email when their passports are ready.

Urgent orders have a delivery time of 4 working days.

Delivery orders take 2 or more days to arrive. They will be returned to the nearest embassy or consulate in case of difficulties in delivery.

Our law provides for four categories of passport. The regular passport is for all Cabo Verdean citizens. The diplomatic passport is usually assigned to diplomatic officers or to senior political or public officers. The Service passport is issued to civil servants on foreign service mission, and temporary passport is of exceptional use and has a short validity time. It aims to overcome circumstantial constraints and to solve unforeseen situations that may arise.

Passport issued February 12, but expires November 22. The passport entry requirements for Cape Verde on Gov.uk states "Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Cape Verde.", unlike the requirements for traveling to EU which states "Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)

valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)"

Can anyone confirm that the passport will be valid for entry into Cape Verde, that is, has anyone actually visited with a British passport over 10 years old without issue?

42 replies to this topic

Did you find out the answer to this? We are in the same position, only with a child's passport.

Yes I did, but sadly it was too late for us as we had already applied for a renewal.

Here's the reply I received from the Embassy

"Dear Sirs,

Good morning and greetings from the Embassy of the Republic of Cabo Verde in Brussels.

Regarding the issue, the Embassy informs that, according to Cape Verdean legislation in force for the entry and exit of foreign nationals in the national territory, "the validity of the travel document (passport) must be greater than, at least, six months to the duration of the planned stay ". So if you return in February, your passport is in order.

The Consular Section of the Cape Verde Embassy in Brussels thanks you for your attention and wishes you a pleasant journey.

Best regards.

Basically, they are not concerned about the issue date, or that it may be more than 10 years since issue, there just needs to be at least 6 months on the passport on the date you return.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for responding, certainly saves me an email to the embassy.

But that is not what we were asking. My husband's passport had 9 months remaining, the issue was that it would have been more than 10 years old in February when we were due to go. Shenghen area rules which apply to Europe state passports should not be more than 10 years old on date of entry, AND should have at least 3 months remaining, the Embassy confirmed the former did not apply for entry to Cape Verde.

passport rules for travel to cape verde

Thanks Tharweb that is so helpful. I put in my renewal application yesterday as advised by TUI as although my passport doesn't expire until June 2023 the 10 year rule means it 'expires' in October and we go to Cape Verde in May (6 weeks time). Luckily I haven't sent off my current passport and saw your post (wish I'd checked Trip Adviser first) and contacted the passport office who confirmed that passports are taking between 4 to 10 weeks to be issued however I can put my application on hold for up to 3 months so I can send off my passport to them when I return in 7 weeks time - phew! panic over. I will print off your comments from the Embassy to take with me just in case though.

Happy to have helped, have a fab holiday!

Yes, some vaccines are recommended or required for Cape Verde. The PHAC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Cape Verde: COVID-19 , hepatitis A , hepatitis B , typhoid , yellow fever , rabies , meningitis , polio , measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) , Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) , chickenpox , shingles , pneumonia and influenza .

Cape Verde has a tropical climate and is fairly consistent year-round. Temperature ranges from 25 to 30 degrees.

There is low humidity in Cape Verde and strong winds occur between November and March. This creates large waves off the coasts. There are large amounts of sunshine, with little cloud cover. The warmest month to travel to Cape Verde is in August.

How Safe is Cape Verde?

Petty crime is common in Cape Verde in highly-populated areas such as markets and festivals. Look out for groups of children with no adult supervision. The majority of pickpockets are children.

Be careful when using hillside stairways at all times of the day, for these are common locations for assault. It is strongly advised not to use them.

While swimming or fishing in the waters around Cape Verde, watch out for strong tides and currents that can cause drowning.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

Hiking in Cape Verde

Cape Verde is most known for its hiking trails, especially on the island of Santo Antao. The island has canyons and valleys with lush vegetation. The northern part of the island is the most popular among hikers and you can access it by ferry.

The hiking trails in northern Santo Antao feature a variety of different trails including coastal trails, trails of volcanic rock, cliffs, bluffs, cobblestone paths, terraces and small villages filled with colorful buildings. The two most popular hikes on the island are the Cova Crater and Coastal Track.

What Should I Pack for Cape Verde?

  • Hats and sunscreen to protect against the consistent sun.
  • Shoes for hiking, if you plan to hike.
