Featured on Animal Planet

Gator Boys, a team of experienced wranglers working out of their home base in our Everglades Holiday Park, were first featured on Animal Planet in 2012. The prominent figures being Paul Bedard, Jimmy Riffle, and Chris Gillette, among others, are shown wrestling alligators out of places those animals shouldn’t be. Their final episode aired in February of 2015 and showed the Gator Boys advocating for and pressing on policy reform for safe habitation of alligators.

Exhilarating Performances

The show includes many jaw-dropping, up close and personal looks at the behavior and mannerisms of American alligators. One of the tricks called the “face off” includes a Gator Boy holding the gator’s mouth shut with his chin!

A Unique Wildlife Experience

The most exceptional thing about these shows is that they aren’t just for entertainment purposes. Every show is interwoven with education so that the viewers better understand alligators, how to protect their environment, and how to act when seeing an alligator in the wild.

Preserving the Everglades

The Everglades ecosystem is subtropical wetlands spanning two million acres over central and south Florida. During the wet season, late May through June, Lake Okeechobee overflows into a shallow, slow-moving river affectionately named the “River of Grass” because of how dominated it is by sawgrass marsh. The water flows southward through many diverse habitats until it reaches Everglades National Park and then Florida Bay.

Originally, the Greater Everglades ecosystem was made up of a large diversity of habitats all connected by bodies of water and wetlands. However, since the 1800s, humans have been changing the Everglades landscape, unintentionally as well as intentionally. Water diversions and flood control structures, while important for human settlements, restrict the flow of water across what is a sensitive landscape. Once you factor in agricultural and urban developments as well, it’s not hard to see how the Everglades have decreased in size, which affects the quality of the included habitats.

By providing the Gator Sanctuary for the talented and conservation-conscious Gator Boys, we hope to showcase just how much positive influence this rescue team has by educating and encouraging viewers to contribute to the ongoing preservation of the Everglades ecosystem.

The Ultimate Alligator Experience

Encountering alligators in the wild can be scary and intimidating, especially as a visitor to Florida. These shows are the perfect way to get educated about alligators and have an immersive experience that will create lifelong memories.

The Gator Boys are very careful. Performers are trained for quite a while before ever being allowed to do a solo show, and there are always people on standby in case something goes wrong. No performer is ever left unattended. The viewers have protective barriers between them and the alligators as well as raised walls so that there’s no chance of the alligators finding their way into the crowd.

When you visit, we want you to feel comfortable and secure. The shows are intense, heart-pounding, and exhilarating, but every viewer is safe, and the performers are well-cared for.

Testimonials

We had so much fun! The staff was great! Wes was so passionate and informative. Sherri was so sweet and let us walk Pickles! (Thanks to Chris for wrangling Pickles for us!) We had a wonderful time and plan on being back!

This is the only place that makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. I’ve always been fascinated by alligators so I think this place is awesome! Can’t wait to go back for a 3rd time! My son was just a baby last year but I think he’d really enjoy it now so I’m really looking forward to it!

Today I visited Alligator Alley. I am seven years old, and I had so much fun. I came home and looked at the website. I think that your park is a great place, and I decided that I would like to work there one day. I love Captain Crunch! He and the Colonel and Big Moe were my favorites!

Just wanted to say that you guys have a fantastic place! My family and I enjoyed our visit. There were so many great things. It was very helpful having Evan around.

It was an experience we will never forget and we keep talking about to others. It is really nice to go to places where you can interact with animals but also have a friendly and knowledgable staff.

There’s something for every member of your family

Kids will love feeding and learning more about the baby animals in our Petting Zoo. Mom and Dad can rest easy knowing that there is a covered playground for kids to run around when they need to burn off some energy. GUIDELINES FOR SERVICE ANIMALS

  • We welcome guests with disabilities who choose to bring their trained service animal into Wild Florida. A service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for someone living with a disability. According to the ADA, service animals must be under the owner’s control at all times and should remain on a leash or in a harness. While in the Drive-thru Safari Park, your vehicle windows must remain up at all times. While in the Gator Park or on an Airboat Tour, the service animal must be on a leash at all times. Emotional support and service animals in training are not allowed entry into the Drive-thru Safari Park or Gator Park. While emotional support animals are often used to help with medical or emotional challenges, they are not considered service animals under the ADA.

Service Animals Accessibility Map

  • Service animals may not enter interactive habitats, including the giraffe feeding encounter, lemur encounter, sloth encounter, or porcupine encounter and are not allowed in the petting zoo or walk-thru bird aviary. These specific animals may view dogs as a threat and may become scared or stressed in the presence of a service animal.

Nighttime Gator Tours

night_tour

On our night tours, you will see a variety of reptiles, insects, fish and amphibians. Alligators are very active at night. Our captains are highly seasoned gator hunters and are very skilled at finding alligators in the darkness of night. Our captains use lights to see the eyes of the alligator glowing at night. It’s not uncommon to see one to 100 gators on a tour.

The temperatures are much cooler at night, a good way to beat the summer heat, and not bake in the sun.

Daytime Gator Tours

We also offer a day tour of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. These are done in 20-foot mud boats that glide quietly thru the water. No earmuffs needed. If your looking for a calm relaxing tour, without the roar of the big block air boat motor, this is it.

There’s certainly no shortage of family activities in Orlando. Marsh Landing Adventures is a top-rated airboat tour in Orlando and one of the only alligator tour operators that offers four-hour airboat rides.

Best Alligator Tours in Orlando

You’ve seen alligators in zoos and aquariums, but you’ve never seen them like this. Our airboat captains know all the best places to spot alligators, from the Headwaters to the Florida Everglades—they lurk in freshwater swamps and marshes, hiding out in gator holes that dot the area. We go above and beyond to make your alligator tour a truly memorable experience. All of our alligator tour captains are licensed by the US Coast Guard. They are avid outdoorsmen with a passion for wildlife and in-depth knowledge of the Everglades ecosystem.

And, of course, our captains know their stuff when it comes to alligators. Children and adults love the thrill and adventure of our Orlando alligator tours, but they also appreciate the opportunity to learn more about these fascinating reptiles. You’ll leave with a better understanding of alligators, their habitat, and the importance of conservation.

Remember, Alligators are wild animals and we can not control where they are at all times.  Our captains are great about knowing where they normally “hang out” – but some seasons do make it a little more difficult to see a lot of gators.

What Our Guests Have to Say

Our ninety-minute ride was everything we had hoped it would been, and it was made even more enjoyable by my comfy bucket seat in the front row (and a carabiner to secure my bag). Captain Wayde was friendly to us guests and, even more importantly to me, respectful of the animal life we encountered. I think that a Marsh Landing Adventures airboat ride is an excellent way to leave one's everyday world behind and get immersed in Central Florida nature.

Had a fantastic 1hr ride out with Capt Scott what a charmer very funny and knows his stuff for sure, had a wonderful exhilarating ride out into the swamps even had a beer at no charge if you are there in the area its a well worth trip.

We had a boat tour with Captain Chris and honestly if I had the time this holiday I would go again! It was amazing! The marsh was picturesque and full of wildlife. We were even lucky enough to see a few alligators! Our Captain was great ; very friendly and informative! An absolute 10/10.

Florida is a hot zone for invasive species with more nonnative wildlife per square mile than anywhere else on the planet. With numerous academic publications in the subject of invasive species biology, allow me to share my field experience of python hunting, tegu tracking, lionfish collection and chameleon documentation. Invasive species have been declared as the leading cause of native species extinction after deforestation and understanding this complex issue has become a necessity for any biology student or environmentally oriented person. We will discuss the invasion pathways, environmental effects, and how to move forward with this unique issue.

As a professional alligator "wrestler" I will discuss the biology and physical abilities of these animals, their impressive mental capabilities, handling techniques, and training techniques. See photos that completely defy public ideas of how these animals "should" behave and learn how such work is possible in a safe and respectable manner. I will break down and explain wild behaviors and how they apply to captivity, along with techniques that promote the safety and well-being of both animal and trainer.  With over a decade of hands-on experience with alligators and experience with eleven other species of crocodilian, I would like to share the knowledge and respect these powerful animals have taught me over the years.

See beautiful and up close photos of Great Whites, Tigers, Bulls, and many more species in their natural habitats. Learn about the incredible biology and ecological value of these misunderstood animals as well as the exhilarating stories behind the photos. It’s 70 years since Owen Godwin opened his first roadside gator attraction for tourists coming down to Central Florida from the North. The good news is they’re still coming, and more than ever before. The self-proclaimed ‘Alligator Capital of The World’, Gatorland is home to hundreds of Florida’s original residents (the long scaly kind!). Although some of the tourist kitch remains, the family-owned park has gotten very serious about conservation of these remarkable animals and their crocodile cousins. Breeding programs are used with great success to ensure the reproduction of not only Florida’s alligators but also endangered species like the ferocious Cuban Crocodile. The focal point of the park is the Breeding Marsh, a natural Cypress swamp, where the main population of swamp dragons resides. A scenic wooden boardwalk gets you within snapping distance of these scaly sunbathers. Be sure to climb the observation tower for an excellent view of the park and surrounding area.

Stompin’ Gator Off-Road Adventure

Don’t worry your trainer will keep you safe but you’ll get to learn about and experience these big boys and have some fun doing it. Be prepared for the unexpected with this exclusive Gatorland Trainer-for-a-Day package!

Shows & Encounters

Gatorland offers a unique, Florida cracker-style alligator wrestling show in a shaded 800-seat stadium.  The Gator Wrestlin’ makes you realize just what some people will do for money. Gator wranglers catch a 6 to 8-foot alligator by hand, climb onto its back and point out interesting survival features. After doing stunts that only a few are brave (or foolish) enough to try, the alligator is rolled over and put to sleep – only to be awakened by a tickle! Guests can have their photo taken with one of the participants. Guess which one!

By far the most unique show is the Jumparoo . Hungry gators leap for chicken appetizers encouraged by the cheers of a fascinated audience. Note that the feeder is chained to his podium to avoid becoming dessert! Don’t miss the very unusual White Gator Exhibit – they are NOT albino they are leucistic (go look it up!) – and Panther Spring where you can get up close with Neiko and Lucy, two stunning examples of this beautiful and endangered species.

Make sure you see Upclose Animal Encounters Show , featuring snakes, spiders and lots of toothy grins (that’s just the handlers)! Befriend fascinating creatures from around the globe, including some of the most dangerous snakes alive!

  • Breeding Marsh – it’s very pretty in a ferocious kind of way!
  • White Gators – freaky and fascinating!
  • Up close Animal Encounters Show – as close as you want to get!
  • Jumparoo Show – you can’t escape without seeing this!
  • Gator Wrestling – getting to grips with some of the locals.
  • Stompin Gator Off Road –  rocking and a rolling!
  • Screaming Gator Zipline – you have to do it!
  • If you’re a keen birdwatcher, March through August a large nesting colony of egrets and herons are in residence as the gators protect the nests from raiding raccoons. You can get some great photos.
  • Take 30 minutes and let your kids cool off over at Gator Gully , a gator free water playground.

Gator by the Bay’s rousing tribute to zydeco-music giant Clifton Chenier a night to remember

Accordionist and singer C.J. Chenier led his Red Hot Louisiana Band

The dance-happy performance capped off the second day of the homegrown, 21-year-old festival, which continues through Sunday night at Spanish Landing Park with dozens of roots-music bands performing on multiple outdoor and tented stages.

Zydeco-music pioneer and Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award-winner Clifton Chenier’s centennial was celebrated a year early Friday night at San DIego’s 21st annual Gator by the Bay, but who’s counting?

“This was supposed to happen in 2025,” Chenier’s son, C.J. Chenier, told the cheering audience at Spanish Landing Park. “But here we are, so, yeah!”

CJ Chenier at 2022 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival May 1, 2022

Gator by the Bay will celebrate zydeco-music giant Clifton Chenier’s legacy with all-star lineup

Bayou boogie! The 21st annual edition will feature 100-plus performances on seven stages at Spanish Landing Park. The lineup includes C.J. Chenier & His Red Hot Louisiana Band, Marica Ball, Sonny Landreth, Rosie Flores, Chickenbone Slim with Laura Chavez, and more. Plus, 10,000 pounds of crawfish!

May 3, 2024

Happily, the consistently rousing concert by the younger Chenier and his aptly named Red Hot Louisiana Band seemed perfectly timed for any year. Their exuberant performance — which featured set-long guest spots by fellow Pelican State natives Sonny Landreth on slide guitar and vocals and Marcia Ball on piano and vocals — was doubly celebratory. It served as a tribute to Clifton Chenier, who died in died in 1987 at the age of 62, and to zydeco itself.

A propulsive musical gumbo of traditional Louisiana Acadian styles with rock, blues, waltzes, swing, boogie-woogie, country, soul and more, zydeco was pioneered by Clifton Chenier in the 1950s. His subsequent national and international concert tours introduced the music to a broad audience that seized the opportunity to dance and revel in an earthy music that is rarely less than galvanizing.

But the transformation of zydeco — which began as a homegrown roots-music style with a small regional audience in Louisiana and Texas — into an internationally acclaimed genre was long and daunting. C.J. Chenier stressed that point after the eighth selection of his set, an incendiary version of his father’s classic “Hot Tamale Baby” that featured rousing lead vocals by Ball.

“Mr. Clifton Chenier traveled a hard road,” said the younger Chenier, who is 66 and has led his late father’s band since 1987.

“When he first started playing zydeco, people asked: ‘What’s zydaayco?’ You have to understand : A Black man leaving Louisiana and playing accordion and singing, in French, and driving in the United States — in the 1950s — (was very challenging).”

The younger Chenier also acknowledged the fact that at least two generations have come of age since his father’s death, and that they may have little or no familiarity with zydeco or its origins.

Friday’s performance with Ball and Landreth celebrating his dad’s legacy was billed as Bayou Boogie. Under any name, it was an irresistible delight that saw the nearly block-long dance floor in front of the stage fill with dancers less than a minute after the opening number, “Chenier’s Boogie,” had kicked off.

The 79-minute performance that followed found C.J. Chenier performing on his father’s accordion, rather than on his own. He and his band, which now features former San Diego guitar ace Billy Thompson, kept the Gator dance floor at Spanish Landing Park packed throughout their performance.

Highlights abounded, from the heartfelt blues of “I’m Coming Home” and the uproarious “Ettifi” to the infectious, two-stepping bounce of “Toule Ton Son Ton (Every Now and Then),” which may well have inspired Fats Domino’s 1960 song “Hello Josephine” — or vice versa.

The two concluding numbers — the 1946 Louis Jordan gem “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie” and the encore of Ray Charles’ 1954 classic “I Got a Woman” — were so revved up one almost expected the dancing audience, if not the stage, to elevate.

Chenier sang and played with soulful verve and impressive instrumental fluidity throughout, while Landreth’s ebullient slide-guitar solos approached a level of musical ecstasy. Ball shined on piano, while the rock-solid rhythm section of drummer Tony “Young Buck” Stewert and bassist Sean Allen skillfully anchored and propelled the music.

Metal rub-board player Ruben Morena very ably subbed for Red Hot Louisiana Band mainstay Steve Nash. And, in the several instances in which he was featured, former San Diego blues guitar favorite Thompson delivered wonderfully fluid solos that further elevated the music at hand.

Chenier and his band were scheduled to perform again at Gator by the Bay on Saturday, but without Landreth and Ball, who were set to play there Saturday with their respective groups. With a four-day lineup that includes more than 80 bands and solo artists from near and far, this earthy, homegrown San Diego festival is an annual treat. Here’s to its next 21 years.

21st annual Gator by the Bay festival

When: 10:30 a.m. to 8:20 p.m. Saturday, , followed by 9 p.m. to midnight dance concert; 10:30 a.m. to 7:40 p.m. Sunday, May 12.
