Volkswagen Thing (1971 to 1980)

The Thing, as it was known in the United States, was a military vehicle manufactured by Volkswagen. The Type 181 was created as a military vehicle for the West German Army, yet soon went into civilian production in 1971 under various names around the world. The Type 181 was known as the Thing in the United States, the Safari in Mexico, the Trekker in the UK, and as the Kurierwagen in West Germany. Popular for its utilitarian nature, these cars were simply designed, giving them durability and allowing them to be repaired easily. Featuring the same mechanical underpinnings as the Beetle, the civilian Type 181 would be in production until 1980, yet production years for the US market were only 1973-1974.

The recipe is fairly simple: take an orthodox car, add unorthodox ground clearance, all-terrain tires, and hit the dirt.

Inspired by the East African Safari, and in particular, the Martini liveried Porsche 911s that took part in 1978, the popularity of the ‘Safari Build’ continues to climb to heady new heights. While specialists like Leh Keen and Richard Tuthill craft best-in-class offroad Porsche platforms ranging from FIA legal rally cars to the creative and conceptual, the craze has been seeing enthusiast-built projects surface left and right.

Although the Porsche 911 is the most prominent platform, the off-road road car concept can be applied to just about anything. With a splash of Group B and a pinch of Baja 1000, there are a few people who have diverged from the traditional path to create some truly unique vehicles. Perhaps the genre's newfound popularity is due in part to our eagerness to get out of our homes and into the wild following the pandemic restrictions, or, perhaps we feel the need to flee the heavy traffic of our crowded city streets. Either way, it looks like the Safari build is here to stay.

Alfa Romeo GTV: Dropped Alfa

Moving a little off-piste, I’d like to introduce you to the ‘Dropped Alfa’, a 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV aptly named after it fell off the back of a truck while in transport. Prior to being ‘dropped’ this Alfa Romeo was built for carving the canyons outside LA. After the drop, it remained badly beaten until brothers Iliya and Nikita Bridan, of Oil Stain Lab , came up with a plan for its reincarnation.

The twins, who both work as designers, discussed many potential plans but settled on a Safari build, after all, they couldn’t damage it any further by taking it off-road. The Alfa lent itself surprisingly well to the conversion. Lifting the suspension proved to be straight forward and the body could accommodate large tires without modification. The tuned engine is better suited to blasting through the desert than climbing steep trails. The car was developed over time but proved so popular that it led them to construct a follow-up Safari build. 

I Am Detailing's BMW E30 325ix

Expert car detailer Jakub Marek spends his days preparing some of the world's most special cars for premier concours displays. In his free time, he does the exact opposite. After owning over 20 BMW 3-series, he took this 325ix almost completely apart and built it into a off-road capable machine for the Gambler 500 in less than a week (yes you read that correctly). This included making a custom skid plate on front to protect oil cooler and oil pan for the upcoming event.

After servicing the engine and brakes and adding 27/8.5-14 tires, Jakub proceeded to drive the car from LA to Oregon just in time for said Gambler 500 event and the car performed flawlessly.

Following the success of Dropped Alfa, the Bridan brothers were commissioned by Aether Apparel to build another Safari car. Aether wanted something unique and discussed many potential platforms including a Porsche 968, but the decision was made upon the discovery of a low mileage Alfa Romeo GTV6. Work began immediately. Concept drawings were realized in 3D while they attended to the Alfas electrics and mechanicals.

The rear suspension of the GTV6 is a complex affair with de Dion tube, trailing arms, inboard disc brakes, and a 5-speed transaxle. A simple lift wasn’t going to be possible. The rear end was 3D scanned so components could be designed and manufactured to lift it properly while retaining the correct geometry. The results are simply exquisite, a properly engineered car that can handle off-road with an equally arresting aesthetic that complements Giugiaro’s original design.

So, the watersports was a little disappointing, the parasailing, jet ski and banana boat activities were less than 5 mins each. But, the rest of the trip made up for it. The first tour was Telaga Waja Rafting Bali for 3 hours! The rafting experience was amazing and full of fun moment. Lunch was also provided with this package and we moved to the next destination, Padang Padang beach. It took another 2-3hours to get there but our guide, Naya never get tired. We took some photos around the beach and spent about 30 mins to look around. After that we moved to Uluwatu temple and he took a nice photo for us. we watched Kecak dance from the temple and moved quickly to Jimbaran Seafood restaurant. The dinner was great although we are not seafood person and we were satisfied with this course. Special thanks to Naya again and hope we meet again someday in the future. Tour guide Nyoman Parwata was contacting me the day before the tour. He was at my hotel lobby before 8sm. He was very helpful and very patient to explain the history of each sites. He smiles whole day and never give us any unhappy moment. He also managed times very well, we have never been rushed at each sites. We always had enough times to see, to buy things, and take many pictures. He was even our personal photographer. He is Sonoma good and safe driver. Mother & Daughter Crew in 2024 WRC Safari Rally

W orld Rally Championship ( WRC Safari Rally) 2023 featured a mother and daughter crew of Caroline Gatimu and Tinashe Gatimu for the first time ever in the history of motor sport.

The 2024 WRC has also featured the duo entry in a sport often dominated by men.

Caroline began rallying alongside her husband Gatimu Mindo in 2008, participating in the four-by-four events held in Athi River at the time.

The couple transitioned to rally raid, formerly known as cross country, which featured faster-paced events than the four-by-four races.

They began competing in cross country events where they were tasked with following a road map and covering specific distances within designated timeframes.

Caroline persisted in this pursuit for several years alongside her husband as the navigator.

However, around 2012, they found the pace too sluggish and transitioned to rallying with faster cars.

Initially, Caroline began driving a Volkswagen (VW) Golf before transitioning to a Toyota Levin.

Upon switching to faster cars, her husband assumed the role of her manager, and together they formed an all-lady rally crew known as “Divas on Wheels.”

Caroline recalls how they evolved over time, taking a brief hiatus before returning with renewed vigor.

They resumed racing together, marking the beginning of their continued growth and dedication to the sport.

Tinashe Gatimu Journey into Motor Sport

As Tinashe puts it, their primary aim in the Safari Rally is “to get to the finish line and bring the car home the way we left with it.”

“Getting to tell my mother what to do is quite fun,” she said, highlighting their unique dynamic on the track.

Tinashe a 19-year-old said she started her journey in motor sport when she was younger as she used to participate in GP cut events at carnival. These events essentially involved driving automatic cars, requiring only gas, brake, and steering control.

Subsequently, she mastered driving and proceeded to operate manual vehicles over the following years, with her father serving as her instructor teaching her the skills needed for manual driving.

In 2022 she started participating in Motorsports events like autocross where she drove a manual car.

Tinashe said she got the courage of rallying from her father and mother seeing how they carried themselves while growing up.

“Basically, they taught us you can do anything if you set your mind to it and from there, I just built up the courage to start driving and I think it was also just inside me because coming from two speed junkies it’s believable that it would just be there,” she said in a past interview.

Tinashe’s racing journey began with a Magi Bag, then progressed to a 2WD Toyota Levin, which had been her mother’s car.

Currently, she drives a Subaru GF8, but for the 2024 WRC rally, she’s piloting a Subaru N 10.

How They got into 2023 WRC Safari Rally

In 2023, they participated in the Lioness rally, a modest event organized by a group of women passionate about racing. It was here that the duo began their journey together.

Caroline assumed the role of driver while Tinashe navigated. Along the way, they engaged in autocross events, competing against each other in the same car, each taking turns behind the wheel.

When the WRC Safari Rally returned, the government assembled the Talanta Hela Ladies Rally Team, comprising four teams, which provided them entry into the WRC.

Caroline explained that initially, she drove while Tinashe navigated, as her daughter had come of age and grasped the intricacies of racing.

However, they later decided to switch roles to encourage the younger generation, with Tinashe taking the driver’s seat and Caroline assuming navigation duties in the 2023 WRC debut where the duo finished in 10th place.

Tinashe is currently in her A-level studies, in Year 13. On weekdays, she attends school, and on weekends, she joins her mother for practice sessions.

“On the weekend my mind is solely on the rally and then during the week my mind is solely on school so that’s how I managed to balance it and I also know that behind the scenes mom and dad are doing their best to sort out their side and I don’t of course have to think about it too much,” she said.

How the Duo Prepare for Rallying

Every day, Tinashe engages in evening practice sessions, whereas her mother prefers to practice in the morning.

However, regardless of the timing, staying focused and maintaining fitness is crucial, especially since endurance events can become intense with high temperatures, prolonged durations, and demanding concentration.

In terms of car preparation, a dedicated team ensures that their cars are maintained and meet the required standards to withstand the rigors of racing without any breakdowns.

“We go out there in the field and just practice all the way from the little kids who take part in autocross in the buggies all the way to the older ones because what we need to do is to make ourselves better,” Caroline stated.

On a normal day Caroline and her husband run a garage called shift Auto Services which is in Westlands and they also they run a motor vehicle recovery company.

Jeep reveals 2024 Easter Safari concepts

We get two wranglers, a gladiator and a wagoneer this year.

There may be snow on the ground in many parts of the country as I write this, but spring is in the air even way up here in the once-frigid expanse of Michigan, and with it comes Jeep's annual celebration in Moab, Utah — the Easter Jeep Safari . And as is tradition, Jeep has a handful of concept builds to show off to this year's Safari-goers. While we won't be seeing anything along the lines of the now-retired Jeep Magneto or 392 Scrambler , it's still Easter Jeep Safari; there's always something cool. 

Blame the UAW strike, retirements in Jeep leadership ( former design chief Mark Allen departed in May of last year) or what have you, but 2024 is a bit of a lean year. Jeep is bringing just two ground-up concept builds and two Jeep Performance Parts accessorized models to the 2024 edition of Easter Jeep Safari. There are no wild vintage riffs or rebodies this year, but that's just as well. We can file these in the "attainable" category for once. Let's dive in. 

Jeep Low Down

The Low Down Concept celebrates the V8. It was short-lived in the Wrangler but the 392 also made a splash in the Grand Cherokee SRT8. It may not be a "Jeep engine" in the strictest sense, but it's certainly one that Jeep fandom has embraced in recent years. The Low Down gets its name from an older Easter Jeep Safari Concept: the Lower Forty . Both are designed around their V8 engines (the Lower Forty had a 5.7-liter Hemi) and were customized so that the engines could be fitted without having to lift their bodies for extra clearance. This one rocks a standard 392 with 475 horsepower and a stock-height suspension but beefed-up Dana 60 axles and a set of 5.38 gears. That color is called Poison Apple Red, by the way. 

Jeep Willys Dispatcher

With the retirement of the badass 6-speed electric Magneto , this 4xe-based Willys Dispatcher is by default the most forward-thinking concept Jeep has at the Safari this year. Embracing a sense of juxtaposition, Jeep's designers used this concept as the foundation for a throwback build featuring 36-inch tires on eggshell-colored steelies highlighted (literally) by a bright green finish. Inside, there's distressed leather with houndstooth inserts and no headrests to be found. Vintage. Or like on TV. Take your pick. 

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top

This one's my personal favorite. Maybe it's the sweet two-tone finish or the big, fat sidewalls, but this pickup-based build speaks to me. Those thick shoes are 40-inch BFG KO3s on 18x9-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. Never would have imagined I'd see a street Jeep tire that would make an 18-inch wheel look tiny, but here we are. 

Like the Vacationeer below, the High Top is decked out in Jeep Performance Parts goodies, including flat fender flares, Dana 60 front and rear axles, an AccuAir adjustable air suspension ( We got to sample one last year! ) and an entire pile of visual and go-anywhere bolt-ons from JPP and their partners at American Expedition Vehicles et al. This one's just based on the standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, but that's OK. I'll take it as it sits. 

Jeep Vacationeer

No, not vacationer, but Vacation eer . This spearmint-wrapped Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back is... well, OK, it's a Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back. In fact, maybe it's just me, but the Vacationeer looks an awful lot like the Camp Lux Grand Wagoneer from a year ago, which was also a Grand Wagoneer with a roof tent and a bunch of stuff in the back. But it can't be, right? I mean, it's green and the wheels are different... Can you rattle-can a roof tent chassis? Asking for a friend. 

That's it for the 2024 round of Easter Jeep Safari Concepts. As I said above, it's a lean year in Moab, but 2024 is going to be a big one for Jeep. Why? One word: Recon . Stay tuned.
