DEPARTURE TIME & LOCATION: Riomaggiore, the southernmost village in the Cinque Terre. Departure at 18:30 (6:30 pm), return at 21:00 (9 pm). N.B (departure and return times change during the season depending on the time of sunset)

ITINERARY: Our sunset tour departs from Riomaggiore, and we slowly make our way up the coast to Monterosso, and then we turn around and head back to Riomaggiore.

The evening light gives our guests an excellent opportunity to capture beautiful photos of each of the five villages as we pass by, and you might even be lucky and see dolphins during the cruise. As the sun sets behind Monterosso, you can take a dip in the Mediterranean. It is pure magic. We provide fresh, local focaccia and unlimited prosecco on board. This two and a half hours group tour and you can also book it as a private tour. Minimum age 18 years old

DEPARTURE TIME & LOCATION: Our daytime tour departs from Riomaggiore, the southernmost village in the Cinque Terre. Our two and a half hours tour

ITINERARY: We slowly make our way up the coast to Monterosso, with many stops along the way.

We will stop in front of every village to snap photos from the boat. During the tour we’ll stop at caves near Vernazza (a perfect place to jump off the boat for a dip), followed by checking out a waterfall. Time to swim is included in this tour. After we have arrived in Monterosso we’ll head off shore so you can see the entire Cinque Terre coast and this beautiful prospective as we head back to RIomaggiore. ITINERARY: Departing Riomaggiore in the morning, we head up the coast to Monterosso and give you some time to check out the city center. Then we head to Vernazza, where you have a couple of hours to explore or have lunch.

We’d be happy to reserve you a table in advance at one of the restaurants in the harbor. After lunch, we’ll take you past Corniglia, the only village not accessible by sea, and stop near Manarola to let you swim in a secret swimming hole, which has the best water in the entire Cinque Terre. We’ll then head past Manarola and cruise along the Via dell’Amore back to Riomaggiore. We provide you with local focaccia and prosecco during the cruise. This 5-hour private tour is by request only. N.B Lunch is not included in the price of the tour. Want to create your own tour? We’d love to work with you! Just fill out our booking request form and let us know what you’d like to do! DEPARTURE TIME & LOCATION: Riomaggiore, the southernmost village in the Cinque Terre. This a half hours tour

Departures from La Spezia Available

ITINERARY: Departing from Riomaggiore, we will head towards Porto Venere, stopping along the way in some extraordinary places. The first stop is a natural waterfall called Canneto, located next to a deserted beach that can only be reached by sea. After swimming and exploring, we will head towards The Red Rocks, a ridge made of beautiful pink and red stones. Then we will head to Palmaria Island, where we will visit two natural caves and the island’s splendid coast. Our next stop is Tino Island, a military area dotted with relics from WWII. Complete with German bunkers, tunnels, and lighthouse, any history buff’s favorite part of the tour.

After Tino Island, we’ll pass by Tinetto Island and the Madonna del Mare, a sculpture of the protector of sailors made of Carrara marble, the same marble used for Michelangelo’s David. Finally, we will show you the School Ship, a rock in the middle of the gulf on which in 1500 a tower was commissioned by the Republic of Genova. In 1800 it was attacked and partially destroyed. Since 1915 it has been used as a warning? We will then head towards Portovenere, where you can disembark for half an hour to have a coffee, take a short walk along the promenade, or visit the beautiful San Pietro church. After departing Portovenere, we will head back to Riomaggiore and conclude the tour. Enjoy free time for sightseeing, swimming, sunbathing, and lunch in the village of your choice. This three-hour group tour and you can also book it as a private tour. ADD ON OPTION: Add the Cinque Terre by Sea 2-hour tour to this Portovenere tour for an additional cost.

What you will see along the way..

Monterosso al Mare: the northernmost village of the Cinque Terre, which is divided into two sides: the historic center and the “new” side called Fegina, with a pedestrian tunnel that connects the two. Monterosso is larger than the other towns and is the only one that offers beach services, making it the most visited of the Cinque Terre.

Vernazza: the smallest of the Cinque Terre villages, and commonly known as the most fascinating thanks to its beautiful marina and the Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia which stands right on the water. Here you will also see the Torre del Belforte which sits above the harbour as a protective lighthouse for the small village.

We will contact you a few days before your tour to touch base. In the case of bad weather or rough seas, we will see if it’s possible to reschedule the tour. If not, we will cancel the tour with no penalty with as much warning as possible.

How far in advance do i need to book my tour?

All of our reservations are booked on a first come, first served method so in order to ensure availability, we suggest you book as soon as you are certain of your travel plans.

What happens if i need to cancel my reservation?

• FREE CANCELLATION up to 48 hours prior to the tour. You will receive a full refund of the deposit paid online.
• All cancellations made within 48 hours of the tour will lose 100% of the deposit paid online.
• All no-shows will lose 100% of the deposit paid online.
• In the case that we must cancel the tour due to poor sea or weather conditions, you will receive a FULL REFUND of the deposit paid online.

Where do we meet the boat?

Our tours depart from the main pier in front of the Historic Center side of Monterosso. Upon confirmation, we will send a map showing the departure point. Contact us directly for more information.

Is there parking near where we meet the boat?

There are two public parking lots in Monterosso, however due to the very limited space in this small village, we strongly recommend arriving by train. If you have a car, you can park in either La Spezia or Levanto, and catch the train from there.

Cinque Terre is one of the most iconic, picture-postcard images of Italy, with its pastel-colored houses perched on the north-west coastline of Italy on the hills above the Mediterranean sea.

Knowing which part of Cinque Terre is the best place to stay depends on your preferences—here's a guide on when to go, what to take, where to stay and how to get about in Cinque Terre.

Why Is Cinque Terre So Special?

The five medieval villages of Cinque Terre have been UNESCO listed since 1997, inspired a Disney movie (Luca) and entice three million tourists to visit every year.

The wine made on the clifftops was legendary in the Renaissance period when it was sent to the tables of royalty and Popes—that's especially extraordinary considering the hillside in which it was, and still is, produced makes for backbreaking work.

It's even more incredible considering how remote it must have felt for centuries. The railway connecting Genoa and La Spezia was built in the 1870s, linking the five villages for the first time by train—before that, it was only accessible by sea. By 1960, one single-track road had arrived but it remains incredibly difficult to move about by car.

Above all, it is the views that are sublime. Everyone has a favorite village, but there's certainly something for every kind of nature lover, whether that's people watching on the beach or hiking vertiginous cliff faces.

Just as its name suggests, Cinque Terre is made up of five villages—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

Monterosso al Mare (red mountain) is the largest village in Cinque Terre with the most stores, hotels and guesthouses. It is divided into two parts, separated by a tunnel—the medieval part is to the east and to the west is Fegina, where you'll find the newest part of the village and the only sandy beach in Cinque Terre where you can rent beach chairs and parasols (the private beach clubs open in May and close for the year in September). Monterosso is the flattest of any of the Cinque Terre villages.

While it is often seen as the most overdeveloped village in Cinque Terre, Monterosso offers a great opportunity to taste authentic artisanal produce (think limoncello, olive oil, pesto) from local family-run businesses and has a large choice of seafood restaurants.

Vernazza is considered one of the most picturesque village (meaning sometimes, the busiest) with colorful Ligurian houses and fishing boats in the only natural harbor of all the Cinque Terre villages—it's here that you'll find all the pretty architectural features of the ancient Genoans, like winding staircases and atmospheric arches. The hike starts here to Monterosso in the north and Corniglia to the south—it's a stunning climb up to the Belforte Tower of Doria castle, built in the mid-1500s to protect the village from pirates.

Corniglia , the Cinque Terre village in the middle, is the only one not built directly on the seaside but 100 metres above sea level (you'll need to climb the 380-odd steps or take the shuttle bus from the station). It is the smallest and least accessible village, meaning that the larger tourist groups and buses tend to avoid it.

Manarola is one of the oldest villages and known for fishing and wine (think footpaths through the cliffside vineyards with yummy wines and delicious views). It might be one of the most instantly recognisable villages, known for its boat ramp into the sea and for watching the locals cliff jumping into the sea. Sit in one of the many Trattorias, eating fresh seafood—say, the muscoli ripieni— mussels stuffed with mortadella, parmesan and egg—overlooking the lush vineyards.

Riomaggiore has a pebble beach, a pretty harbor, some nightlife and a great sunset surrounding the patchwork of colorful houses stacked one upon another. It's the most eastern/southern village connected by narrow cobblestoned lanes and steps upon steps that lead up to the 13th century Castello di Riomaggiore, which has a great view.

How Long Does It Take To Walk The Five Villages Of Cinque Terre? Can I Take The Train? Is The Via dell'Amore Open?

The entire area is a national park with over 120 km (75 miles) of footpaths, connecting all five villages. Most trails are free of charge except, for instance, the trail than connects Monterosso and Vernazza and Corniglia, for which hikers need a Cinque Terre card. The Red Trail (Sentiero no.1) is free and runs along the ridge along all five Cinque Terre villages. The easiest part of the Blue Trail that connects Vernazza to Corniglia takes 1.5 hours, taking in the tiny hamlet of Prevo, although it is steep at the bottom.

The most famous walking trail is probably Via dell'Amore , or The Path of Love . It's flat, accessible and only takes 1km (half a mile) between Riomaggiore and Manarola but it has been closed since 2012 due to landslide damage— it's due to reopen fully in July 2024 for guided tours only. (Many trails were destroyed in the heavy flooding and landslides of 2011).

The easiest way to travel around the five villages of Cinque Terre is to take the express train that runs every 20 minutes (the schedule and prices can be found here ). There is also a hop-on, hop-off ferry service for about €30 per day but tickets cannot be bought in advance and must be bought from the ferry booths themselves.

While it is possible to visit Cinque Terre in one day, the villages are most atmospheric in the evenings when most of the day tourists have left, so you'll get the most out of a trip if you stay longer than two or three days.

The trails are often closed due to weather issues, so check the national park website for updates. To be most loved, stick to the paths and leave everything as you found it, taking litter with you.

How Can I travel To Cinque Terre?

Pisa Airport is close and from there, it's easy to take a train to Pisa Centrale Train Station and then to one of the Cinque Terre villages (usually changing trains at La Spezia).

Driving is complicated, the roads narrow and entrance to the villages banned (you would need to park in designated spaces outside). Only residents can drive inside.

Take the ferry from Levanto, La Spezia or Portovenere to Monterosso, Vernazza, Manarola, and Riomaggiore (it is only Corniglia, high on the cliffs that doesn’t have ferry access).

Can I Cycle The Villages Of Cinque Terre?

In a word, yes, you can cycle the villages of Cinque Terre but the difficulty of cycling the paths shouldn't be underestimated and anyone unused to long periods on a bike on hilly terrain could hire an electric bike near the Madonna of Montenero Sanctuary in Riomaggiore or in Manarola.

The Sentiero del Crinale, path number one, is a good bet for cyclists, as it's an old mule track, dating from Roman times. It's 40 kilometres long, rising from 800 metres to around 1.300 metres above sea level, starting in Levanto and finishing in Porto Venere in the south.

Is Cinque Terre Expensive?

Cinque Terre is very expensive by Italian standards as so many people come to visit one of the prettiest parts of Italy. Moreover, at weekends and on holidays, prices will easily double. The best value might be an affittacamere, a room without breakfast and while restaurant prices might be higher than you expected for a small village, there are lots of small bakeries that make delicious focaccia bread.

Levanto and La Spezia are at either ends of the trainline (and included on the Cinque Terre travel card) so it could be a good idea to stay in either of these places to find something cheaper, depending on availability. Porto Venere is another nearby village, an important commercial post in Roman times, often overlooked but worth a visit.

What Should I Bring To Visit Cinque Terre?

These are cliff sides that you will be exploring, prone to shifting over time and under weather—bring solid footwear and layered clothing that you can shed or add to match the weather, with waterproofs. Take lots of water (there are fountains to fill up free-of-charge in the villages) and there is little shade, so hats, sunscreen and sunglasses are a priority.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Cinque Terre?

Summers are increasingly hot across Europe, which is the fastest-warming continent due to climate change and thanks to remote working, there are less easily recognisable cheaper shoulder seasons, as in the past. April/May and September/October are good options for avoiding the crowds. Make sure to verify that you're not traveling on Italian public holidays or the villages will be unbearably crowded.

1. sunbathe at monterosso beach.

Monterosso has the longest stretches of beaches of the five villages. Monterosso Beach really is the best beach in Cinque Terre. These beaches are located in both the new part of the village as well as in the old town area.

Both sections offer traditional beaches where you can rent umbrellas and a lounging chair OR find a free section of beach where you can spread out with your own beach towel, chair and umbrella.

2. Explore All Five Towns of Cinque Terre

If you plan to visit the coast and are looking for the best things to do in Cinque Terre, you really ought to plan to visit all of five towns of Cinque Terre. Each one is a little different from the others and offers a variety of sightseeing options.

3. Hike from Monterosso to Vernazza

If you plan to hike during you visit, I recommend you plan for an early start, especially in the summer months. The best time to hike in Cinque Terre is during the morning hours. You'll find fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and less humidity.

Signage at the beginning of the hike makes it clear that hiking in flip flops can result in a fine. The family of four in front of us, three of whom were wearing flip flops, turned around at the pay station to avoid being fined. Getting fined is NOT one of the best things to do in Cinque Terre!

The narrow path is not easy with steps going up from the very start. There are many fitness levels, ages and agility levels of tourists who hike this trail. The hike is 2.2 miles with an elevation gain of 705 feet.

Take time to enjoy the journey. Stop every so often to take a few pictures and selfies. The views are amazing and as you get closer to Vernazza, you see the brightly colored iconic village. The colorful homes, the boats, the people swimming…all fantastic.

The hike takes about an hour and a half for the average hiker. You'll hike past quaint homes and terraced farms of olive trees along the way. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen.

• Check the banana gelato. If it is bright yellow, move on. If it has a grayish color, it was most likely made with real bananas

Things to Do In Monterosso al Mare

Chris and I chose Monterosso as our home base for our three-day getaway. For us, it was the best place to stay in Cinque Terre. We arrived on the afternoon train from Milan and were immediately enamored with the views of the coast and Mediterranean Sea.

As we exited the train station with our bags in tow, we walked right out to the waterfront area of the "newer" section of Monterosso. I couldn’t help but take pictures .

Known for the great beaches , if sunbathing is on your wish list of things to do while visiting Cinque Terre, Monterosso beach is the perfect option. It also makes is one of the best places to swim in Cinque Terre.

Vernazza Things To Do

Vernazza is a popular village with a little something for everyone.

This village boasts the only natural harbor along the coastline of the five villages. Beyond a small area of beach for sunbathing and playing in the water, there are plenty of places and restaurants to do a little people watching.

Hiking from Monterosso to Vernazza is one of the best things to do in Cinque Terre if you want to see the amazing vistas of each of the villages.

Things To Do In Corniglia

Escape many of the crowds as you climb the 382 steps up to the village. Not to worry, there is a bus that will transport you up the hill as well if that many steps are daunting.

Corniglia is the only village that does not have waterfront access. One thing you CAN do is wander through the narrow streets to see picturesque viewpoints, visit tourist shops, and find something fresh and tasty to eat.

Although there is not a real beach in Manarola, locals and tourists love it for some of the best deep-water swimming around.

Riomaggiore is the largest of the five towns of Cinque Terre. It is the most southern village and is closest to La Spezia. It offers plenty of fine dining opportunities and a great nightlife .

How to Get From One Village to Another

Taking the Cinque Terre Express train is the best way to travel from one village to another. The Cinque Terre Express runs approximately every 20 minutes from mid March until 1st of November.

If your plan for things to do in Cinque Terre involves hiking between the villages, you can purchase the Cinque Terre Trekking Card  which gives you access to all  footpaths .

Whatever your skill level with a camera, be prepared for some amazing photos while visiting all of the Cinque Terre villages.

Canon Powershot G1  – This camera is great if you leave the camera in AUTO mode and work well with a point and shoot. It does give you the option to switch to MANUAL mode if you choose.

Canon T8i  – If you are just beginning your photography journey and want to switch back and forth between Auto, Aperture Priority, or Manual Mode, this makes a great entry level DSLR.

Canon 6d Mark II  – This is a great camera for advanced photographers who are comfortable shooting in Manual Mode.
