We just returned from the Margaritaville cruise. It was so much fun! It had the same laid back and relaxing vibe of the Margaritaville Resort that we visited last year. The price is great so we will be back!

Nice Little Cruise

The Grand Celebration is quite-a-step up from the old Celebration cruise. It's much larger and much newer. We like this little cruise and have also taken the cruise & stay package, combining 2 nights at the Viva resort in the Bahamas...great deal!

Bahamas cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Ashley Kosciolek

If you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary -- and for good reason. Found on Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages, Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Read on for all you need to know when planning a sailing that includes the Bahamas -- one of the cruise industry's most popular destinations.

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

grand bahama cruises

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida -- the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers are spoiled for choice. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

grand bahama cruises

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school, and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in the summer. Plus, wave season -- when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year -- runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found during the summer, with lower temperatures during the winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

grand bahama cruises

Islands in the Bahamas are found on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the U.S. East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

grand bahama cruises

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, proximity to the U.S. East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "big eight" brands -- Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

One unique outlier is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, which exclusively operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas before returning on the ship several days later.

Additionally, BPCL has joined forces with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville to offer Margaritaville at Sea cruises , rebranding and renaming its sole ship -- Grand Classica -- to Paradise.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

grand bahama cruises

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, head to Paradise Island, a quick taxi ride from Nassau, which boasts the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use its outdoor pools and water slides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style Johnny cakes.

Best Bahamas cruise ports

grand bahama cruises

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands, which can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau , the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers visiting for the first time, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But, brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Beach Club at Bimini on part of a property operated by Resorts World. When Virgin ships are in port, the only people who have access to the Beach Club are Virgin passengers. Cruisers who call on Bimini with other lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship is not docked that day.

Private islands

grand bahama cruises

Six of the cruise industry's seven private islands are located in the Bahamas. These carefully curated swaths of land can only be visited if you're sailing on a ship that has access.

When you're ashore, you can expect clean facilities, pristine beaches, shopping opportunities, free buffet lunches (usually barbecue) and a variety of carefully controlled water-sports-centric shore excursions. Some of the larger, more developed private islands also boast water parks, horseback riding, zip lines and pools.

Private cabanas, villas and bungalows are also offered, but they come at a premium and usually book up quickly. Some are even reserved for cruisers booked in suite accommodations on their ships.

When to book a Bahamas cruise

grand bahama cruises

Since the Bahamas is a year-round destination and lots of ships call there, supply is plentiful. That means prices tend to be more affordable, particularly for shorter Bahamas-only voyages.

For additional savings, consider booking your sailing in the first quarter of each year during " wave season ," when cruise lines offer fare discounts and other added-value perks like free Wi-Fi and beverage packages, discounted airfare or onboard credit for things like spa treatments, shore excursions or dining in extra-fee restaurants. Also keep an eye out for Black Friday deals toward the end of each year.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident rates (if you live in Florida), military discounts or kids sail free promotions.

What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

grand bahama cruises

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

If you plan to shop while ashore, most places do accept credit cards, but you might want to bring cash. U.S. dollars are accepted in the Bahamas, so there's no need to exchange currency.

Bottom line

grand bahama cruises

If you cruise, it's almost certain you'll visit the Bahamas at some point in your travels. Although it can be crowded, the experience is an enjoyable one.

If you're looking for a fun warm-weather destination that offers plenty of beach time, active diversions, history and culture, shopping, gambling and excellent food, you won't be disappointed with a call on this popular cruise region.

Benefits of Solo Cruising

I really enjoyed the benefits of solo cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line. I had the freedom to plan my own vacation and enjoy activities at my own pace and on my own schedule.

One of the highlights was the solo traveler meetups organized by the cruise line. These events provided a great opportunity to socialize and meet other solo travelers. It was a wonderful way to make new friends and share experiences.

Additionally, exploring local attractions was made easy as a solo traveler. I had the flexibility to set my own pace and visit the sights that interested me the most. Whether it was exploring the beautiful Vancouver Harbor or visiting the free museum at the cruise terminal, I had the freedom to plan my day according to my preferences.

Solo cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line truly offered a unique and enjoyable experience.

Flexibility and Independence

With the ability to set my own pace and explore desired sights, I felt like a free-spirited adventurer on the open sea. Solo cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line provided the ultimate flexibility and independence that I craved during my trip.

Here are some solo travel tips and ways I enjoyed exploring new destinations:

Create a personalized itinerary: I had the freedom to plan my vacation exactly the way I wanted it. Whether I wanted to relax by the pool, try out different onboard activities, or explore the ports of call, I had complete control over my schedule.

Embrace spontaneity: Without the need to coordinate with others, I could easily change my plans on a whim. If I felt like trying a new restaurant, attending a show, or joining a shore excursion, I could do so without any restrictions.

Connect with fellow solo travelers: Norwegian Cruise Line organized special events and meetups for solo travelers, providing opportunities to socialize and make new friends. These gatherings were a great way to share experiences and tips with like-minded individuals.

Take advantage of exclusive amenities: The Studio Staterooms on Norwegian Cruise Line ships offer unique perks for solo travelers. The exclusive lounge provided a comfortable space to relax, enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks, and connect with other solo travelers.

Solo cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line allowed me to fully immerse myself in the joys of solo travel. The flexibility and independence made each day an exciting adventure, and exploring new destinations became even more fulfilling.

Building Confidence

Exploring new destinations and navigating the ship alone allowed me to gain a sense of empowerment and self-assurance. Solo travel has its advantages, and one of them is the opportunity to overcome travel fears.

As a first-time solo traveler, I initially felt awkward eating and attending shows alone. However, as the days went by, I gradually gained confidence in traveling alone. I realized that I could enjoy activities at my own pace and on my own schedule, without the need to coordinate with others. This freedom allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience and discover new things about myself.

Overcoming my initial hesitations and embracing solo cruising helped me build confidence not only in travel but in other aspects of life as well. It was a truly empowering and transformative journey.

Affordable Option

One of the concerns that may arise is the misconception that solo travel can be expensive, but a solo cruise offers a cost-effective option with affordable prices and inclusive amenities. When comparing solo cruising to group cruising, there are significant cost savings to be enjoyed. By traveling alone, you have the freedom to plan your vacation without coordinating with others, allowing you to enjoy activities at your own pace and on your own schedule. Additionally, solo cruising eliminates the need to pay double occupancy rates, making it a more economical choice. Norwegian Cruise Line offers great value for money, as the cruise fare includes unlimited food, entertainment, and activities. This means you can indulge in delicious meals, attend exciting shows, and participate in a wide range of activities without worrying about additional costs. So, don’t let the misconception of solo travel being expensive deter you from embarking on a solo cruise adventure. It’s an affordable option that provides a unique and enjoyable experience.

Inclusive Amenities

I thoroughly enjoyed the inclusive amenities offered on my solo cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line. The solo traveler perks provided by the cruise line made my experience even more enjoyable and convenient.

Here are the top three inclusive amenities that stood out to me:

Exclusive lounges: Norwegian Cruise Line offers exclusive lounges for guests staying in Studio Staterooms. These lounges can only be accessed with a keycard for a Studio Stateroom and provide a comfortable and relaxing space. The lounges have comfortable chairs and couches, as well as fully stocked snacks and drinks. It was a great place to unwind, socialize, and meet other solo travelers.

Complimentary amenities: The Studio Lounge also offers complimentary amenities for solo travelers. From special events and socials to organized meetups, there were plenty of opportunities to connect with other like-minded travelers. The cruise line provided a wide range of socializing opportunities, ensuring that solo travelers felt included and had a chance to make new friends.

Convenience and cost-effectiveness: One of the best aspects of the inclusive amenities was the cost-effectiveness. Solo travelers don’t need to pay double occupancy rates and can enjoy unlimited food, entertainment, and activities, making the cruise a great value for money. Additionally, the convenience of having everything included allowed me to fully enjoy my vacation without worrying about extra costs.

Overall, these inclusive amenities made my solo cruise experience with Norwegian Cruise Line even more special. I felt well taken care of and had the opportunity to connect with other solo travelers, creating lasting memories.

Safe and Secure

Feeling safe and secure while traveling alone is essential, and Norwegian Cruise Line takes the well-being of solo travelers seriously. They have implemented various safety measures to ensure a secure environment for all passengers.

Onboard the ship, there are security personnel and surveillance cameras throughout the public areas, ensuring a safe atmosphere. Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line conducts safety drills and provides safety information to all guests, including solo travelers.

Cruising itself offers inherent advantages in terms of safety for solo travelers. As a controlled environment, the ship provides a sense of security, with limited access to outsiders. Moreover, the cruise line offers exclusive amenities for solo travelers, such as the Studio Lounge, where guests can socialize with fellow solo travelers in a comfortable and secure setting.

With Norwegian Cruise Line, solo travelers can enjoy the perks of cruising while feeling safe and secure throughout their journey.

Unique Experience

Experiencing a solo cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line offers a truly unique adventure. One of the joys of solo cruising is the opportunity to explore the ship alone. Whether it’s strolling through the elegant corridors, finding a cozy spot to read a book, or simply taking in the breathtaking views from the deck, you have the freedom to create your own itinerary and discover the ship at your own pace.

Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line provides socializing opportunities specifically designed for solo travelers. Meetups and special events are organized in various locations around the ship, including the exclusive Studio Lounge. These gatherings offer a chance to connect with fellow solo travelers, share experiences, and make new friends. The age groups attending these events vary, ensuring a diverse range of socializing opportunities. It’s a fantastic way to build connections and create lasting memories with like-minded individuals while enjoying your solo adventure at sea.

Shared Experiences

While sailing alone, I couldn’t help but yearn for the laughter, camaraderie, and shared experiences that come with cruising alongside family and friends. However, there were still many pros to experiencing new destinations alone.

I had the complete freedom to explore at my own pace and on my own schedule. I could immerse myself in the local culture without any compromises. Overcoming the initial awkwardness of solo dining and attending shows was a challenge, but it was worth it. As the trip went on, I gained more confidence and felt more comfortable in my own company.

It was empowering to step out of my comfort zone and meet new people during solo traveler meetups. While I missed sharing the experience with loved ones, the solo cruising experience was still enjoyable and allowed me to grow as a traveler.

Msc Yacht Club: Exclusive Amenities And Island Retreat

An image showcasing the luxurious Msc Yacht Club: a serene oasis amidst crystal-clear turquoise waters

Stepping onto the luxurious MSC Yacht Club, I was overwhelmed with excitement. The opportunity to enjoy the club’s unique amenities and the island escape waiting for us seemed like a dream come true.

The Yacht Club, with its spacious 226 square foot interior suite, offered a haven of relaxation and comfort. But the true highlight of the cruise was Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island paradise. I could already imagine myself sipping on Bahamian cocktails, indulging in lobster and mahi-mahi, all while soaking in the breathtaking views. And as a Yacht Club guest, I would have access to the suite-only area on the island, known as the Ocean House.

But the perks didn’t end there. Onboard, I would enjoy a premium drink package, complimentary Wi-Fi, and unlimited access to the Thermal Spa. It was clear that the MSC Yacht Club was the epitome of a luxurious cruising experience. Whether you’re looking to splurge and relax or simply want the best of the best, the MSC Yacht Club is the perfect choice.

  • MSC Yacht Club offers exclusive amenities and access to special events.

Recommended for

Subscriber only, travel | carnival doles out more details on new bahamas destination.

Lokono Cove is the name of the retail area coming to Carnival's Celebration Key on Grand Bahama island when it opens in summer 2026. (Carnival Cruise Line)

MIAMI BEACH — Carnival Cruise Line has released another round of updates on what travelers can expect when its new private destination Grand Bahama Celebration Key opens.

Debuting in summer 2025, the port of call will be welcoming ships from Florida ports Port Canaveral, PortMiami, Tampa and Jacksonville as well as six other U.S. ports.

The 369-acre site less than 20 miles east of Freeport will be the first dedicated to Carnival Cruise Line, although Carnival ships have used sister line destinations Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay for years.

The largest port construction project in the line’s history will be carved into five segments the company calls portals, and Carnival released details about the third one tied to retail, an artisan village called Lokono Cove.

Named in deference to the native Lucayan language, “lokono” means “the people.” It was the winning selection from Grand Bahamas resident Deidre Rahming, who was on hand in Miami Beach with an entourage from the Bahamian government on Tuesday at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference.

She received a check for $5,000 from Carnival and a future day pass for the resort, which won’t normally be open to visitors from the island. The line says at least 300 jobs will be generated for locals serving the cruise guests.

Lokono Cove will have kiosks and stores alongside “an authentic Bahamian artisan market” showcasing local craftsmanship, according to Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. Beyond the items for sale, the space will have music and murals to enhance the space, and local food.

“Lokono Cove will be a treasure trove – a place for our guests to immerse themselves in the spirit of the Bahamas and find locally inspired keepsakes, symbols of paradise they can share with loved ones, or cherish for themselves for years to come,” said Duffy said/ “Honoring the beauty and culture of the Bahamas is integral to our plans for Celebration Key, and that will be on display throughout Lokono Cove.”

The space also will be the excursion gateway for visitors to explore Grand Bahama.

It’s the third name drop by Carnival following the reveal of welcome area Paradise Plaza and adult-friendly area Calypso Lagoon. The final two space names and details, which will be a family-friendly area and an adults-only private area, will be revealed later.

The site will also have a south-facing mile-long beachfront expanse and massive freshwater inland lagoon the line says is the largest in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Paradise Plaza features a rainbow-colored walkway through a sunshine entranceway with a 10-story “Suncastle” as a centerpiece. The welcome area is the place to book the day’s activities including cabanas, water sports and shore excursions. The area will also feature a Bahamian-themed fountain and ice cream shop.

Calypso Lagoon falls just to the west, home to the sport court and freshwater lagoon and lounging options galore. It’s home to a bar with 50 swings that let visitors dip their feet into the water, and just one of many bars serving the space and two full-service restaurants and other casual snack shacks. And adults-only area of the portal will feature a swim-up bar with a DJ, food trucks and more lounging options.

Future expansion will build beyond the five portals including the construction of a water park.

The port of call will open with one dock capable of handling its largest ships, the 6,000-passenger Excel class, including Port Canaveral-based Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration out of Miami.

The line announced this year a $100 million plan to expand that with a second dock so that it could handle up to four such ships beginning in 2026. That expansion, which grows the line’s investment to $600 million so far, means it expects nearly 4 million passengers to visit the site annually by 2028, an average of 11,000 visitors every day. For now, it has more than 500 itineraries planned among 18 ships available to book.

Other U.S. ports visiting the new site are Galveston, Texas; Baltimore; Norfolk, Virginia; Mobile, Alabama, Charleston, S.C. and New Orleans.

“As is fitting for our plans for Grand Bahama island, our vision for Celebration Key is quite grand, and we’re already thinking about the next phase of expansion and development,” said Duffy when the pier expansion was announced. “Building the second pier now allows us to implement growth plans and build itineraries with certainty, and signals to the local community just how important this development is to Carnival Cruise Line and the future of the island.”

Norwegian Cruise Line Is Adding Caribbean, Bahamas Cruises From a New US Homeport

Norwegian Cruise Line is adding a new homeport next year: Jacksonville, Fla, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The company has signed a three-year agreement to homeport its Norwegian Gem cruise port in Jacksonville, beginning in November 2025.

The 2,394-guest-capacity ship will be home-porting seasonally in Jacksonville each year from November through April, through at least 2028.

That will mean a new option for cruises to The Bahamas and the Caribbean — the first time NCL has home-ported in the Florida city.

So what will the itineraries be like? NCL says Gem will be sailing a mix of 12-day and 11-day cruises to the Eastern Caribbean, with stops in Caribbean ports like San Juan, St Kitts, St Thomas, Puerto Plata and Antigua, among others.

That’s along with four- and five-day cruises that will be stopping in The Bahamas, with calls on both Nassau, Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay destination and in Grand Bahama.

Cruises for 2025 are already on sale, the company confirmed.

Breaking news, father of florida cruise passenger, 20, who jumped off royal caribbean ship after argument believes his son is still alive: report.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The father of the 20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last Thursday in a reportedly drunken, impulsive leap believes his son is still alive nearly a week later.

Francel Parker, dad of missing Levion Parker, told the Daily Sun that he believes his child — whom he called a master diver — is still alive in the waters off the Bahamas.

“As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him. I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive,” Francel Parker said to the local Florida paper Wednesday.

Levion Parker was ID'd as the 20 year old who jumped to his death from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

The US Coast Guard called off its search for the North Port man a day earlier.

The younger Parker allegedly jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m. in front of his helpless dad and younger brother after getting into an argument with his father, witnesses previously told The Post.

But Francel, who runs an AC business in Port Charlotte, told the local newspaper that he wasn’t arguing with Levion and that his son wasn’t trying to take his own life.

He said Levion is a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat, and he is demanding to know how his underage son was given alcohol on the four-day cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island.

“We don’t drink,” Francel said. “I’d like to know how my son was served so much alcohol.”

Levion Parker is shown pictured with his family.

Another passenger onboard the cruise who witnessed Levion’s heart-stopping jump said Francel was “fussing at him for being drunk.”

Bryan Sims told The Post that he was hanging out with Levion and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, in the hotel tub of the ship in the early hours of April 4 before they went their separate ways.

After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he bumped into the brothers and their father near the elevators.

Levion Parker's dad claims his son is still alive, adding that he's a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Sims said of the moment before Parker jumped.

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all,” Sims said, calling what he witnessed “surreal.”

Another cruise guest described the frantic chaos that followed.

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” Deborah Morrison told The Post.

A witness claimed to have saw the father become growingly upset about Levion being too drunk while on the cruise.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

Francel told the Daily Sun that he threw six life rings off the ship in hopes of saving his son before the massive vessel was able to come to a stop about 20 minutes later.

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for the 20-year-old and alerted the Coast Guard, which later took over the search.

Royal Caribbean said it called for search boats to look for Levion Parker alerted the Coast Guard.

At least 406 people on major cruise lines and ferries have gone overboard between 2000 and 2024, according to data collected by retired professor and cruise industry researcher Ross Klein.

Death rates among overboard passengers and crew members vary significantly among cruise lines, but even the safest cruise companies were only able to rescue about 40% of people who fall or jump off the ship, Klein told the Washington Post in July.

Carnival Freedom's next two cruises from Port Canaveral canceled after exhaust funnel fire

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise of the Port Canaveral-based ship for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the ship's next two cruises are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

Thousands of passengers with scheduled cruises will be affected by the canceled cruises during a busy spring break period for Carnival and other cruise lines.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

In a Facebook post, Carnival's widely followed brand ambassador, John Heald, conceded that many people who booked one of the canceled cruises are "feeling very disappointed," and he apologized for the turn of events.

But, Heald added that he wanted to assure affected passengers that, "when you rebook, using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the fun you deserve."

More than 500 people responded to the post, with many saying they thought Carnival was generous with the compensation offer. But some people who said they were on the cruise that experienced the fire said they thought Carnival should have done more for the people who were on the ship.

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cay due to adverse weather.

Details of previous fire: Fire breaks out on Carnival Freedom while Port Canaveral-based ship was in Grand Turk

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

The Freedom sailed into the channel at Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m. Monday, and docked at Cruise Terminal 6, letting off the passengers who were on the cruise. Carnival then awaited a Coast Guard inspection of the ship before it could be cleared to leave Port Canaveral for the Freeport shipyard for repairs. The ship left the port about 6:20 p.m.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The sailing had about 3,700 passengers onboard. And the two upcoming sailings that were canceled each likely would have had a similar passenger count, because this is a busy time for the cruise industry.

The Carnival Freedom's next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled. Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order.

In May 2022, a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

More recently, in October 2023, the Carnival Freedom debuted a new iconic winged funnel after returning from a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain.

Grand Bahama Cruise Port Guide

Grand Bahama is the northernmost island of the Bahamas. Located just 64 miles from the coast of Florida, you’ll still feel a world away thanks to the island’s stunning white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and colorful island towns.

In addition to its beauty, the Bahamas is known for its upscale eateries and resorts, and Grand Bahama is no exception. On a cruise to the Bahamas , take advantage of shore excursions to private beaches, golf courses, animal attractions, and delicious bars and restaurants. Beyond Freeport, you’ll find stunning national parks, incredible snorkeling opportunities, and friendly local people who will show you the island way of life during your Grand Bahama cruise.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Grand Bahama, you can still discover the beauty of the Bahamas on one of our cruises to Nassau . Browse our luxury cruises to the Bahamas below.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to grand bahama island, lucayan national park.

Turquoise water, cave tunnels, and emerald green foliage make up this tropical national park located on Grand Bahama. Lucayan National Park is centrally located on the southern side of the island and spans across nearly 2,000 acres. Explore the park’s extensive sea cave system if you’re feeling adventurous.

Gold Rock Beach

Gold Rock Beach is a gorgeous beach that becomes even more mesmerizing at low tide when the water recedes, leaving a massive amount of sandy shoreline in its wake. The beach is part of Lucayan National Park and is a great place for relaxing by the sea.

Garden of the Groves

Garden of the Groves is an excellent place to get lost in nature during your Grand Bahamas cruise. Walking trails wind through jungle-like scenery, serene lakes, and cascading waterfalls. See if you can spot lizards, parrots, and other birds during your visit. Garden of the Groves also has a cafe and gift shop.

About 40 miles east of Freeport lies the East End, an area of Grand Bahama that’s more off the beaten path for tourists. Here you’ll see more fishing lodges than resorts. The East End encompasses a collection of tinier Bahamian islands where bonefishing is prominent.

Top things to do in grand bahama island, dolphin encounter.

One of the most popular excursions in Grand Bahama includes an encounter with dolphins. Experience these playful sea creatures at Sanctuary Bay, a natural 9-acre lagoon where over a dozen Bottlenose Dolphins live. Stand on a water platform a few feet deep for the chance to kiss and pet the dolphins.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

The water encircling Grand Bahama Island is some of the clearest in the world. On a calm day at sea, visibility can reach up to 200 feet. As a result, the snorkeling and scuba diving are world-class. You can also scuba dive through the sea caves of Lucayan National Park.

Paradise Cove

An excursion to Paradise Cove is a great way to spend the day in Grand Bahama, particularly if you want some recreation with your beach lounging. Paradise Cove offers kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, and beach volleyball. You can also rent snorkel equipment to explore Deadman’s Reef located a short swim from the shore.

Fishing in the Sea

From your Grand Bahama cruise, you can go on a variety of fishing excursions. Try your hand at fly fishing for the speedy bonefish. They are plentiful and fast, which makes for an exciting fishing excursion. You can also go on a deep-sea fishing charter.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Grand Bahama Island Cruise Port

You’ll find an international array of cuisine in Grand Bahama in addition to Bahamian classics like conch salad and Bahamian stew fish. Conch salad is made by combining the meat of the conch, a type of mollusk found in waters around Grand Bahama, with orange, lemon, cucumbers, and peppers. Bahamian stew fish consists of fish boiled to a white and flaky consistency and often combined with onions, potatoes, lime, thyme, and other spices. Seafood reigns supreme in the Bahamas, and a particular delicacy visitors love to try is rock lobster, which is often found in the cracks and crevices of rocks and coral in the Caribbean.

For dessert, try something made with the local guava fruit. Complete your meal with a favorite Bahamian drink, like rum punch or sky juice, which is coconut water mixed with condensed milk and gin.

Culture & History of Grand Bahama Island Cruise Port

Prior to Columbus’ arrival, an indigenous group of people called Lucayans migrated from Cuba to the island. Soon after the arrival of Christopher Columbus and other settlers to the islands, the Lucayan people were wiped out due to disease and enslavement. The Bahamas was eventually claimed by Great Britain and stayed under its rule for 325 years until 1973 when it became its own sovereign country that is a member of the Commonwealth Nations.

Bahamian culture blends an island lifestyle with thriving industries like cement-making, pharmaceuticals, and salt production. Freeport serves as the main hub of the Bahamas industrial and manufacturing business.

Grand Bahama has and continues to be shaped by the impact of hurricanes. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 hurricane, hit the Bahamas. It was the worst hurricane to rage through the Bahamas in decades and did substantial damage to Grand Bahama. The island has long been resilient in the face of hurricanes, though, and has begun to rebuild, with the port reopening to cruise passengers about a month after the hurricane hit.

Grand Bahama Island Port Facilities & Location

The Freeport cruise terminal is a short cab or bus ride away from the beautiful and fun-filled part of the city. The cruise terminal has a smattering of shops and restaurants, so if you find yourself back at the terminal with time to spare before having to board the ship, you can do some additional souvenir shopping or enjoy a tropical drink.

Transportation in the Bahamas

Taxi drivers on Grand Bahama Island operate under fixed government rates, which should be provided to you via a rate card or displayed on the window or dashboard. Taxi drivers are sometimes available to hire for an island tour, in which case you’ll likely be charged an hourly rate instead. Taxis are typically lined up right outside the cruise terminal.

A local bus system operates from the early morning hours until nightfall and can take visitors all around the island. Be aware that the bus between the Freeport cruise terminal and Port Lucaya may run sporadically based on demand.

Shopping Near the Bahama Cruise Port

Port Lucaya Marketplace is the most popular place for souvenirs and apparel shopping. It’s the largest open-air mall in the Bahamas and houses 40 specialty shops and boutiques that sell clothing, jewelry, and locally made arts and crafts. Grab a bite to eat along the waterfront and enjoy the live music that’s often played in the central square of the marketplace.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency in the Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar, which usually has a comparable exchange rate to the U.S. dollar. Most places accept U.S. dollars and credit cards, though smaller vendors may be cash-only establishments.

Tipping is expected throughout the Bahamas, including on Grand Bahama Island. A 15% tip for dining is standard and is usually already included in the bill. If service was exemplary, you’re welcome to leave an additional tip, particularly at fine dining restaurants where 20% is often the standard. A 15% tip is the standard for taxi service
