Calling all fans of Spooked Scotland! This one of a kind Haunted Tour of Scotland is a must for those who are intrigued by the paranormal and been dying to visit Scotland as Scotland is a hot bed for spiritual activity! On this tour we will go to all the sights that were on the popular TV Show. You will be joined by the host, Chris Fleming, a world renowned medium and paranormal investigator seen on Spooked Scotland (Haunted Scotland in the USA) and HELP! My house is Haunted. He will share stories you didn’t see on TV and reach out to the spirits along the way. Expect to also meet Gail Porter and some surprised guests! Space is Extremely limited so booked before it is too late... Departure Date: 19 September 2023 To book the tour go to the calendar on the top right, select September 19, the time and fill in the guest names. After this continue to the booking form until payment. Day 1: ARRIVAL & GLASGOW Welcome to Scotland! Hope you had a spooky flight! We start the tour from Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. In the afternoon we will have a short panoramic tour of the city stoping at the Necropolis to see the "City of the Dead.” where a scene from “The Batman’ was filmed. We will also make a stop outside the Tron Theatre. This location was used on Episode 4. The Tron was built on top of an ancient church burnt to the ground during a ritual performed by Glasgow's HellFire Club. It is said to contain a dark entity! This evening Chris Fleming will give a presentation and talk about his encounter (information is pending for this location). Overnight in Glasgow. Day 2: ISLE OF ARRAN This morning we drive to the coastal town of Ardrossan to catch the ferry to the Isle of Arran. Often called Scotland in Miniature, it has a romantic hilly landscape and rugged coastline. We will have a lunch break at the Heritage Museum then enjoy a panoramic tour of the island. On the way we will stop to visit the Machrie Moor Standing Stones. Then we have a special after hours visit to Brodick Castle. It was here on Episode 1 the team encountered some very vocal spirits and made contact with the Elementals known as the Fae. Chris will bring his Flute and devices to establish communication with them again. Overnight at the Auchrannie Resort. Day 3: INVERARAY & GLENCOE To leave the island we go to Lochranza, the darkest place in the UK, and take a ferry back to the mainland. Then a scenic drive passed Loch Fyne to Inveraray. For many centuries, Inveraray, the seat of the Duke of Argyll, was the principal county town of Argyll. Inveraray Jail has a reputation as one of Scotland’s most haunted locations and a popular location for paranormal investigations. We will have the opportunity to explore this fairytale castle. A gruesome and ghostly chronicle of the bloodthirsty past, divulged in the MacArthur Room. Leaving Inveraray we drive deep into the Scottish Highlands and stop at the daunting Glencoe, the site of a notorious massacre. This was featured in Episode 7. Overnight in Fort William. Day 4: LOCH NESS, HARRY POTTER BRIDGE & CASTLE MENZIES Today is Monster Hunting Day! In the morning we rest, go to the Glennan Viaduct for some photos of the famous Harry Potter Bridge. Then we drive to Loch Ness for a 1 hour cruise. The boat is equipped with sonar's used to hunt Nessie. With over 5000 staggering sightings for the monster - she has to exist! So keep your eyes on the water! After we continue the scenic drive to the picturesque town of Pitlochry. Tonight we have a special evening. We will go to Castle Menzies for a private tour and ghost hunt. Spooked visited this 16th century castle on Episode 9, where they faced the wrath of an Impish creature known as the Red Cap. They also made contact with a friendly woman ghost of the castle and male soldier, not mentioned in the episode. Chris will make contact with the female and male spirit again, and hopefully everyone will get to see the friendly horse out back Chris made friends with. Day 5: VERDANT WORKS, HMS UNICORN SHIP & STIRLING JAIL After you have had some rest from your paranormal experience last night, we head to the city of Dundee. Here we visit the Verdant Works; a 200-year old Jute mill - one of Dundee's deadliest factories! While in Dundee we also go to the HMS Unicorn which is one of the oldest ships in the world with some reported haunts. Then we visit the historic city of Stirling, the old town is on the most haunted square mile in Scotland. Tonight we have another paranormal investigation planned at Stirling Old Town Jail. Featured in Episode 3, the former jail is plagued by some aggressive spirits including a poltergeist. Day 6: WHISKY DISTILLERY, CULROSS & BANNOCKBURN HOUSE This morning we get spiritual, a different way! While in Scotland you can not go without a visit to a Whisky Distillery for a taste of the national drink. For lunch we stop at the Kelpies. Then we go to Culross which was feature on Episode 5. Here we have a talk with a local spiritual expert then visit the Palace. Tonight we have another ghost hunt planned at Bannockburn house, featured on Episode 9. It is said to have the ghost of Bonnie Prince Charlie and a demonic entity that didn’t like Chris being there last time. What will they think when he returns with a group of people? Day 7: EDINBURGH, BANSHEE PUB, & THE VAULTS! Today we head to the capital city of Edinburgh. This is one of the most haunted places in the world and one of Chris’s favorites! With an old town that has lots of dark secrets, a ghostly castle, palace, graveyards for bodysnatcher and a notorious underground city once full of criminals. After a panoramic tour of the city you will have some free time to explore the Royal Mile. Featured on Episode 6 we will dive deep into the Underground Vaults of Edinburgh as Chris wants to see what spirits still remain. Is the spirit of Mr Boots still there? This evening we will say our farewells and recall our experiences traveling around spooky Scotland. But before the night ends We will go to the Banshee Labyrinth Pub where Chris and Gail captured astonishing EVP sounds of chains and a spirit yelling “Banshee!”  Day 8: END OF TOUR / DEPARTURE DAY Self check out. Itinerary Summary

Your Haunted Itinerary

Day 1 arrival.

Arrive Edinburgh Airport and pick up your rental car. Drive to Airth Castle where the staff may take you on a ghostly tour of the castle. Watch out for rooms No 3, No 9 and No 23 as they are all haunted by a small group of playing children. Even their ghostly nanny is still around and she sometimes looks after children whose parents have gone to dinner in the hotel restaurant! Do remember – rooms that are haunted by ghosts will feel chillier… Overnight at Airth Castle.

Day 2 Stirling Castle & Linlithgow Palace

Today you have the opportunity to tour two historic castles associated with Mary Queen of Scots. Stirling Castle stands on volcanic rock overlooking the town of Stirling . The Pink Lady, a beautiful woman in a pink silk gown, has been seen many times at the castle. Some say it is Mary Queen of Scots who was crowned in the old chapel in 1533, and others that it is the ghost of a woman searching for her husband who had been killed when Edward I captured the castle in 1304. A Grey Lady has also been known to appear and it is assumed that she was an attendant to Mary Stuart and saved her from certain death when the draperies on the royal bed caught fire. Unfortunately, every appearance of the Grey Lady heralds a disaster to befall the Castle! Last but not least, listen out for the mysterious footsteps that have been heard all over the Castle…Just down the road at Linlithgow Palace, where Mary Queen of Scots was born in 1542, Queen Margaret’s Bower is said to be haunted by Margaret Tudor, waiting for the return of her husband, James IV, who was battling against the army of his brother-in-law, Henry VIII. James died on the battlefield and Margaret waited in vain –but not for too long, as she then proceeded to marry her husband arch enemy, the Earl of Douglas. So may be it’s a late regret that makes her appear in the Bower. Overnight at Airth Castle.

Day 3 Glamis Castle

Today make the trip through Fife to Glamis Castle, one of Scotland’s most beautiful and most haunted castles. It was the home of the Queen Mother in her youth and the birthplace of her daughter Princess Margaret. However, its history dates back to the mist of time and Glamis was once the hunting lodge of that most infamous of Scottish kings, Macbeth! The castle plays host to a plethora of ghosts, one of which is Lady Janet Glamis, who was accused of witchcraft by King James V and burnt at the stake at Castle Hill in Edinburgh in 1537. According to eyewitness reports, a mist arose from her funeral pyre and descended over all of Scotland. You may see her above the clock tower or sometimes in the chapel, where no one ever sits on the seat in the corner out of respect for Lady Glamis. There is also the spectral appearance of a small servant boy, who had frozen to death, a serving girl turned vampire and a tongue-less woman running through the grounds, but the most amazing mystery is the Missing Room. The window to the room can be clearly seen from the outside of the castle, but no entrance can be found and the window is bricked up. It is said that the Earl of Glamis played cards with his friends and did not want to stop when the clock announced the coming of Sunday. A black-clothed stranger entered the room and joined their game and when next a servant looked into the room he found his master and friends playing cards with the devil surrounded by a wall of fire. The room has been bricked up ever since, but on a quiet night you can still hear the men playing cards. Overnight at Airth Castle.

Day 4 Cawdor Castle

Today we journey north into the Highlands. You will have the opportunity to stop in one of the many picturesque villages on the way, but make sure you leave enough time to take in a different kind of spirit, Uisge Beatha. Take a tour of one of the many whisky distilleries in Speyside, learn about the Angel’s Share and get a taste of the Water of Life. Take a tour of Cawdor Castle, a superb fairy-tale castle romantically linked with Shakespeare’s Macbeth. There are reports of 3 ghosts at Cawdor – a mysterious appearance dressed in blue velvet and the ghost of John Campbell of Cawdor, but the saddest appearance is that of a young lady without hands. It is said that she was the daughter of one the Earls of Cawdor who had been in love with a man her father did not approve of. As a punishment her father had her hands cut off so that she “could never embrace her lover again”. Overnight in Tulloch Castle.

Day 5 Dunrobin Castle

Today you will visit Dunrobin Castle, the most northerly of Scotland’s great castles and home of the Earls of Sutherland. The upper floor of the castle is said to be haunted by the daughter of the 14th Earl. She had been imprisoned in the attic by her father for falling in love with the wrong man. When she tried to flee the Castle and elope with her lover, she fell to her death from a window. This castle also holds Falconry demonstrations in the afternoons. Overnight in Tulloch Castle.

Day 6 Loch Ness & Urquhart Castle

Travelling south along the banks of Loch Ness , keep your eyes pealed for its famous inhabitant, the Loch Ness Monster. Your best vantage point is at Urquhart Castle, the ruins of one of the largest castles in Scotland which fell into decay after 1689 and was blown up in 1692 to prevent it being occupied by the Jacobites. Continue south through one of the most picturesque and haunting sites in Scotland, the valley of Glencoe, scene of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald Clan by the soldiers of King William. Overnight in Airth Castle.

Day 7 Edinburgh Castle

It’s almost time to depart. Spend your remaining time in Edinburgh, doing some last minute shopping or, if you haven’t seen enough ghosts yet, tour the Castle which has many, including a headless drummer who only appears when the Castle is about to be attacked and a piper who disappeared in the tunnels between the Castle and the High Street. Recently, builders undertaking renovating works have been disturbed by ghosts said to be French prisoners of war, who were held captives in the Vaults underneath the Castle.

Haunted Scotland Adventure 8 Day Tour

Scotland’s long and turbulent past has left its eerie mark in many historic castles and legendary landmarks. From the ghosts of those who met a sinister demise to the mystical beasts that lurk in the watery depths of Loch Ness – this spine-chilling tour will surely be an adventure of a lifetime.

Day 1: Edinburgh

Arrive Edinburgh Airport and pick up your rental car. Drive to Airth Castle where the staff may take you on a ghostly tour of the castle. Watch out for rooms No. 3, No. 9 and No. 23 as they are all haunted by a small group of playing children. Even their ghostly nanny is still around and she sometimes looks after children whose parents have gone to dinner in the hotel restaurant! Day 2: Stirling Castle & Linlithgow Palace

Today you have the opportunity to tour two historic castles associated with Mary Queen of Scots. Stirling Castle stands on volcanic rock overlooking the town of Stirling. The Pink Lady, a beautiful woman in a pink silk gown, has been seen many times at the castle. Some say it is Mary Queen of Scots who was crowned in the old chapel in 1533, and others that it is the ghost of a woman searching for her husband who had been killed when Edward I captured the castle in 1304.

A Grey Lady has also been known to appear and it is assumed that she was an attendant to Mary Stuart and saved her from certain death when the draperies on the royal bed caught fire. Unfortunately, every appearance of the Grey Lady heralds a disaster to befall the Castle! Last, but not least, listen out for the mysterious footsteps that have been heard all over the Castle.

Day 3: Glamis Castle

Today make the trip through Fife to Glamis Castle, one of Scotland’s most beautiful and most haunted castles. It was the home of the Queen Mother in her youth and the birthplace of her daughter Princess Margaret. However, its history dates back to the mist of time and Glamis was once the hunting lodge of that most infamous of Scottish kings, Macbeth! The castle plays host to a plethora of ghosts, one of which is Lady Janet Glamis, who was accused of witchcraft by King James V and burnt at the stake at Castle Hill in Edinburgh in 1537. According to eyewitness reports, a mist arose from her funeral pyre and descended over all of Scotland. You may see her above the clock tower or sometimes in the chapel, where no one ever sits on the seat in the corner out of respect for Lady Glamis.

There is also the spectral appearance of a small servant boy, who had frozen to death, a serving girl turned vampire and a tongue-less woman running through the grounds, but the most amazing mystery is the Missing Room. The window to the room can be clearly seen from the outside of the castle, but no entrance can be found and the window is bricked up. It is said that the Earl of Glamis played cards with his friends and did not want to stop when the clock announced the coming of Sunday. A black-clothed stranger entered the room and joined their game and when next a servant looked into the room he found his master and friends playing cards with the devil surrounded by a wall of fire. The room has been bricked up ever since, but on a quiet night you can still hear the men playing cards.

Day 4: The Highlands & Speyside

Today we journey north into the Highlands. You will have the opportunity to stop in one of the many picturesque villages on the way, but make sure you leave enough time to take in a different kind of spirit, Uisge Beatha. Take a tour of one of the many whisky distilleries in Speyside, learn about the Angel’s Share and get a taste of the Water of Life.

Finally, if time permits, take a tour of Cawdor Castle, a superb fairy-tale castle romantically linked with Shakespeare’s Macbeth. There are reports of 3 ghosts at Cawdor – a mysterious appearance dressed in blue velvet and the ghost of John Campbell of Cawdor, but the saddest appearance is that of a young lady without hands. It is said that she was the daughter of one the Earls of Cawdor who had been in love with a man her father did not approve of. Day 5: Dunrobin Castle

Today you will visit Dunrobin Castle, the most northerly of Scotland’s great castles and home of the Earls of Sutherland. The upper floor of the castle is said to be haunted by the daughter of the 14th Earl. She had been imprisoned in the attic by her father for falling in love with the wrong man. When she tried to flee the Castle and elope with her lover, she fell to her death from a window. This castle also holds Falconry demonstrations in the afternoons.

Day 6: Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle & Glencoe

Travelling south along the banks of Loch Ness, keep your eyes wide open for its famous inhabitant, the Loch Ness Monster. Your best vantage point is at Urquhart Castle, the ruins of one of the largest castles in Scotland which fell into decay after 1689 and was blown up in 1692 to prevent it being occupied by the Jacobites. Continue south through one of the most picturesque and haunting sites in Scotland, the valley of Glencoe, scene of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald Clan by the soldiers of King William.  (Stay in Edinburgh at Channings for 2-nights)

Day 7: Edinburgh Castle

It’s almost time to depart. Scotland… a land of legends and ancient castles. With such a vast and fascinating history, it shouldn’t come as a shock that there are a couple of ghosts and spirits that haunt some of the country’s most famous buildings.

With dozens of haunted locations, it is no surprise that Scotland is a ghost hunter’s dream location!

This article will briefly mention some of the most haunted places in Scotland and then delve into five ghost hunts you can join to come face to face with some Scottish ghosts.

The Most Haunted Places In Scotland

Before looking at the different ghost hunts, let’s first learn a little bit about some of the haunted destinations in Scotland.

1. Closeburn Castle, Dumfries

Closeburn Castle was once home to the Kirkpatrick Family. It dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited buildings in Scotland.

The Kirkpatrick Family used to herald swans as bringers of good luck until one family member shot a swan with a crossbow. Then, these regal birds became the omens of death and misfortune and were linked to a centuries-old family curse .

The Castle has many spooky residents, including a mysterious lady in black . This was also the site where Robert the Bruce murdered John “The Red” Comyn – who is said to still haunt the castle today.

2. Inveraray Jail, Argyll

Inveraray Jail is a popular destination for a paranormal investigation. This jail hasn’t housed a criminal for over 100 years, yet it seems some inmates never left!

People who go ghost hunting here retell tales of cold spots , footsteps when no one is around, and shadows floating just out of sight.

Sam Potts, a prison guide, tells his story : “ Cell 2 in the Old Prison is interesting. A number of times I’ve seen young children crouching in the left-hand side of the cell chatting. When the parents ask who they’re talking to they say ‘the old lady’ .”

3. Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire

This magnificent castle is one of the most well-known in Scotland – it is the royal family’s holiday home! But, Balmoral Castle is also one of the most haunted areas in the country.

John Brown is the most famous ghost there. He roams the castle in his kilt, looking for a treasured item that was reportedly buried in the castle grounds.

Balmoral Castle also acted as a refuge from the London Blitz during WWII, and it is no surprise that tortured souls still cling to their past lives here.

4. Edinburgh Vaults, Edinburgh

Although the vaults beneath the South Bridge were closed in the 19th century, they were rediscovered in 1988. Since then, it has been reopened to the public, and tales from these haunted rooms under the bridge have flooded in.

There is a menacing spirit, Mister Boots , who throws rocks. Then there is the ghost-child Jack , who grabs the hands of passers-by. Due to a history of famine, disease and even the storage of cadavers, there are many more haunted happenings here, like cold spots, disembodied voices, and a sense of unease.

5. Mary King’s Close, Edinburgh

Underneath the bustling streets of Edinburgh lay an entire subterranean city. This maze of streets and homes was once the Old Town, which was closed off due to the plague. The new Edinburgh as we know it today was simply constructed on top. Mary King’s Close is but one of the streets beneath the city.

The most famous apparition at Mary’s King Close is Annie . This young girl succumbed to the sickness of 1645, and her ghost was crying because of a doll she lost. This has prompted hundreds of ghost believers to bring toys and games as a gift to the room she haunts.

There is also a poltergeist who has been known to attack visitors. It’s got so bad, that the room where the poltergeist activity was reported has been closed off!

The Creepiest Haunted Places in Scotland

Scotland has long been associated with supernatural spectres, and ghost sightings and strange happenings have been reported across the country. From Stirling Castle to the Old Tay Bridge, we rounded up some of the most haunted spots for you to visit (if you dare) the next time you’re north of the border. Described as “one of the scariest places on earth” and “Scotland’s most haunted cemetery,” this ancient resting place also contains the Covenanters’ Prison and the tombstone of Thomas Riddell Esquire, the real inspiration behind a famous Harry Potter villain, Voldemort. Perhaps the most irking of all is the Mackenzie Poltergeist, the benevolent spirit of Sir George MacKenzie who has left people on ghost tours passed out, scratched, bruised and severely shaken. The tale goes that Bluidy MacKenzie’s poltergeist was unleashed after a homeless man broke into his tomb one frigid night looking for shelter and has played havoc ever since.

Culzean Castle

On 16th April 1746, Culloden Moor, near Inverness, bore witness to one of history’s bloodiest battles between government forces and the Bonnie Prince Charlie. This brief yet gruesome battle demolished the soul-sunken Jacobite army and the many Scottish clans who fought for them. This sombre spot today has been reported as haunted by multiple sources, including Outlander author Diana Gaboldon, who was reduced to tears by the presence of the fallen when visiting the battle site. Some hear sword clashes and painful cries, while others set eyes on a Highland warrior or injured cadavers. Either way, the lingering bloodshed and pain from the battle are evident in the area today.

Skaill House

The fact that Skaill House was constructed within such close distance to the grounds of Orkney’s own Skara Brae – the most complete Neolithic settlement in Europe, also known as the Scottish Pompeii – gives some inkling as to why it has such an abundance of ghostly reports and sightings. Several skeletons have been found under the floorboards of the historical house, with their identities not always known. Over the years, an almost unfathomable number of spooky occurrences have been reported by guests to the eerie grounds.

Stirling Castle

Although a great number of Scotland’s castles are deemed haunted – Edinburgh, Eilean Donan and Crathes included – Stirling is up there with the best of them. Architectural and historical significance aside, an eerie amount of paranormal activity is locked within these ancient walls – from the ghost of the Green Lady, a said servant of Mary, Queen of Scots, to a supernatural Highlander adorned in full Highland garb. There are countless reports of tourists asking him questions, having mistaken him for a tour guide, before seeing his form diminish and disappear.

Crathes Castle

Crathes Castle near the city of Aberdeen is famed for the mysterious Green Lady, one of Scotland’s best-known spectres. Seen throughout the lifetime of the castle and recently said to have been caught on camera, the Green Lady has stalked the long halls for centuries. During a renovation of the grounds and buildings, a child’s skeleton was found buried under the fireplace, with no one being able to discover her identity. Today the castle is open to the public and, outside of its ghostly past, has plenty on offer for its guests.

Eilean Donan Castle

Definitely one of the eeriest places on the list, the Eilean Donan castle has stood in place since the 13th century and been the site of some notable historical events. Part of the castle’s grizzly past includes the capture, murder and decapitation of 46 Spanish soldiers during the first Jacobite rebellion; they are now said to stalk the castle walls and corridors. The castle can now be hired for weddings and weekends away, although the guests may get more than they bargained for.

Dunnottar Castle

This now ruined castle was once the seat of the Earls Marischal, a very notable family in Scotland, but is now home to several supernatural residents. The castle has a long and bloody past, being the scene of several ruthless battles and the setting for the horrific imprisonment of 180 men, women and children in what is now known as the Whig’s Vault. The castle is said to be haunted by a tartan-wearing woman and a possible Viking raider. And during the dead of night, it’s said that the screams and cries of the former prisoners can be heard echoing around the empty walls. Open to visitors, the grounds offer picturesque views across the Scottish coast and some wonderful photo opportunities.

The Old Tay Bridge

The setting of one of the biggest engineering disasters in the 19th century, when a train carrying 75 passengers fell from the bridge into the icy waters below, the Old Tay Bridge is said to host the spectral locomotive once a year on the anniversary of its crash. Deep in December on a cold still night, visitors to the bridge can allegedly hear the rumble of the train as the bridge around it collapses, as well as the screams of its passengers as they head for the dark abyss.

St Andrews Cathedral

Once the biggest medieval church in Scotland, St Andrews in Fife is home to a multitude of spooky tales and ghostly appearances. Although the town is known for its famous golf course, its ruined cathedral is said to be one of the most haunted places in the country. The White Lady, one of the most famous St Andrews ghosts, is said to haunt the main tower, where she died of a broken heart, and to fill those that look upon her with a tremendous sense of dread.

Ghosts in Scotland: Fact or Fiction?

The best ghost tours combine history and horror with expert storytelling and a flair for the theatrical. As darkness falls and the wind begins to whistle through the trees, tour groups gather across the country for a good scare. But can a ghost tour really bring Scotland’s restless past to life? I visited a series of spooky locations to find out. Will you follow in my footsteps and book a tour?

The Journey North

Call me superstitious but there was a chill in the air as I left Edinburgh on a train bound for Dunkeld & Birnam railway station in Highland Perthshire. Autumn had arrived – a season synonymous with the supernatural. As the ScotRail train dashed northwards, the light faded over the horizon, leaving a pink glow in the sky before all was dark.  

This might be my favourite time of year in Scotland, when the leaves curl and fall in a kaleidoscope of yellows, browns and pale gold. It’s very atmospheric and the perfect time to go walking. Just make sure you’re dressed appropriately as it can get cold – especially at night… 

My destination was roughly 1hr 45m from Edinburgh – a good time to read and reflect. I put down my book and checked my handy ScotRail app, we were approaching the station. Mind the gap. The train sped off into the night towards Inverness. I plotted a course through the dusky streets, streetlamps leading the way, and crossed the bridge over the gushing River Tay towards Dunkeld’s ancient centre.

Spine-tingling Stories in Dunkeld

I had booked a walking tour of Dunkeld with History and Horror Tours and was due to meet at the Mercat Cross just before 8pm. Winding my way through the town, I was struck by the beauty of this historic place, nestled on the banks of the Tay. Busy little pubs, people walking to and fro – and not a ghost in sight! 

As I waited by the old cross, warming my hands in my pockets, a figure dressed in a black cloak and hat carrying a long staff emerged. This was Gary Knight, my guide for the evening. We shook hands and had a chat. He and his wife Lynne do a number of ghostly tours around the country. As we spoke, more people began turning up for the tour and before long we set off into the shadows for a night of storytelling.  

I soon found out that the staff Gary was carrying was a Blackthorn Staff, historically wielded by the keepers of dark stories. And sure enough the tour was packed with macabre tales from history as well as insights into what Gary called ‘the fairy realm’.

As we followed Gary through the narrow streets, we found out about terrifying creatures such as the cloven-hoofed Baobhan Sith (pronounced ba-van-shee) that pose as beautiful women to lure unwitting soldiers to their doom. At the entrance to a gloomy graveyard, we also learned of Kirk-grims, otherworldy dogs that roam the graves, protecting the church from evil spirits. Was there something rustling behind the gate? I couldn’t be sure… 

The ghost stories were skilfully interspersed with real tales of gory Jacobite battles and local figures who had met a chilling demise. Including sad tales of accused witches and prisoners kept under the Dunkeld Bridge – our final stop on the tour.  

I have to say I was transfixed with the storytelling on show, as were the other members of the tour group. Huddled under the arches of Dunkeld Bridge at the end of the tour, we all gave Gary a round of applause. We’d had frights, local intrigue and learned a few things too. I thanked Gary and set off back to Edinburgh. He’d very kindly invited me on a ghost-hunt at a nearby castle but I had business back in the capital. I was due on an underground vaults tour the very next day.

A Descent into Edinburgh's Underground Vaults

It was a warm but drizzly afternoon in Edinburgh as I strode up the Royal Mile towards St Giles’ Cathedral the next day. Let’s face it, you never know what the weather will bring in Edinburgh, but in my opinion a little bit of rain only adds character to these ageless streets.  

My tour guide for this Ghostly Underground Tour was Ross Hepburn from the award-winning Mercat Tours . He was a big character with a shock of ginger hair and he greeted his group with a warm welcome and a few quips. The group was made up of people from Australia, England and elsewhere, including a few younger people. He jokily asked the kids if they wanted to see a ghost and they seemed very excited by the prospect! 

The tour was split into two parts. A walk down the Royal Mile into some of Edinburgh’s famous ‘closes’, before a visit to the Blair Street Underground Vaults. It took just over an hour. On our way towards the vaults, Ross shared stories of blood, guts and gore from the darker side of Edinburgh’s history. The highlight for me was a graphic description of tenement life in the city, told with real vigour. We truly learnt the meaning of the phrase ‘Gardyloo’! If you don’t know what this means I suppose you’ll just have to go on the tour to find out… 

On Blair Street, we descended into the vaults through an unassuming doorway. Essentially, the vaults are stone caverns underneath one of Edinburgh’s old bridges. I am fascinated by unseen places like this. Darkness enveloped us. Ross lit a candle and proceeded to lead us through a series of rooms that seemed to get smaller and scarier! He told ghostly tales of the people who once inhabited them, as well as the history behind their construction. I noticed that some of the rooms felt warm, while others were cold… make of that what you will. 

Ross really brought the stories to life and had the whole group feeling a little spooked, but his sense of humour had us laughing too. In the final room, a tiny place, he told us a story so scary that it can’t be repeated here – before blowing out the candle! Argh! 

Afterwards, I caught up with him for a chat and he told me he used to be a stand-up comedian and had always had an interest in horror. He told me that humour was an important ingredient of ghost tours and I definitely agree. We also agreed that it was important to keep an open mind about the supernatural… 

If you’re on a city break in Edinburgh, I would recommend this tour. The vaults are the main character of course, but the storytelling really brings them to life.  

What did I learn?

I have to admit I’m a bit of a skeptic when it comes to ghosts. But going on these tours has made me realise that in the most interesting ghost stories, fact and fiction are blurred. If you like history, you will love tours like this and who knows – maybe you will see something unexpected? I firmly believe going on a walk with an experienced guide is a great way to explore Scotland.
