South Africa Travel Guide
As well as being famed as a place of natural beauty, South Africa also has plenty to offer the realm of business travel and MICE tourism.
SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa’s natural beauty and cultural fascination is well-documented, and rightly so. The tumultuous apartheid period came to an end in the 1990s, and since then the country has opened itself to the world both in terms of leisure and business tourism.
Major cities and MICE hubs are spread far and wide, some being thousands of miles from key settlements in other African countries. Another nuance of South Africa’s formation is the fact it has not one, but three recognised capitals – Pretoria is home to the country’s executive, Cape Town its legislature and Bloemfontein the judiciary. Such is the nation’s growing standing on the global stage, it is one of few countries to host multiple sporting world cups. In 2010 it became the first African host of the FIFA World Cup, while it has also hosted the Rugby Union World Cup (1995) and in 2003 staged the vast majority of matches in the ICC Cricket World Cup.
South Africa also comes into its own in terms of its hugely varied and extraordinary terrain. From the enormous Blyde River Canyon to Table Mountain and dramatic coastal roads to the Karoo and Kalahari deserts, this is an outdoor lover’s paradise, the perfect backdrop for businesses to host meetings, events and conferences. Throw in a largely comfortable temperate climate that sees plenty of sunshine, and you will find the complete tourist package.
THE BUSINESS END
The tourist trade is gathering increasing momentum as South Africa seeks to make the most out of its formidable attractions. In 2017, one in every 22 employed people in South Africa were working in the tourism sector, totalling 722,013 individuals, around 4.5 percent of the 16.2 million people making up the national workforce. The tourism sector contributed 2.8 percent (or R130 billion) to South Africa’s GDP in 2017, making it larger than the agriculture, forestry and fishing industry. According to Statistics South Africa, in 2017 visitors sent over half a million rand every minute, amounting to R277 billion for the entire year, the split being 56 percent domestic spend and 44 percent international.
In terms of numbers arriving, 2018 saw 16.44 million visitors arrive in the country – this represents a steady rise over the past six years, the figure for 2012 being 14.16 million. The upward trajectory is set continue for the next few years according to the latest predictions from research organisation Statista, which forecasts some 19.6 million tourists to visit South Africa in 2023. Away from tourism, foreign trade is another key contributor to the nation’s income, with China, the USA, Germany and Namibia alone accounting for more than a quarter of exports. Key export products include precious metals, agricultural goods and military equipment, while South Africa’s major imports include chemicals and motor vehicles.

Founded in 1987 by Nick Stathakis and Keith McCusker, the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry , better known as SAACI, is a governing body mandated to improve the standards in conference facilities, meeting venues and allied services within South Africa and the wider region. It is a thought leadership pioneer in the MICE tourism space, hosting numerous events and conducting several projects (such as Project RISE) to raise the profile of Southern Africa as a destination for business travel. Having spoken with the organisation in 2018, here we catch up with Kim Roberts, Vice-Chairperson of SAACI, to get the latest insight on South African tourism, as well as some detail on what SAACI has planned for the year ahead.
Q&A WITH KIM ROBERTS, VICE-CHAIRPERSON, SAACI
How would you say South Africa has developed recently as a business travel hub and what are the key reasons behind its growing appeal?
Kim Roberts (KR): South Africa has worked really hard on its exposure to the international marketplace. The increase of international conventions coming into South Africa, as a result of stronger market positioning, has allowed for more feet on our shores. The unique experiences on offer in South Africa, as well as the way we as a nation ‘touch the hearts of those that visit these shores, almost always result in return business for both the business events and leisure sectors. Increased accessibility into South Africa has improved with new airline routes being added. There is so much opportunity within Africa and we look forward to seeing those routes becoming less complicated. Many African countries require a link in the Middle East or Europe in order to then get to South Africa – this change will certainly aid in economic growth.
Why, in your opinion, should someone visit South Africa?
(KR): It is the home of mankind, the real roots of the human race. One comes to South Africa and there is a spiritual connection with the land, along with its natural beauty, friendly people and sophisticated infrastructure.
Are there any specific attractions, landmarks or places to eat and drink that you would recommend?
(KR): I would have to say a visit to Maropeng. If I was a tour guide and could share my favourite places, the itinerary would cover a self-drive to Mpumalanga and include the Kruger National Park, the Eastern Cape wild shoreline, our winelands and the city of Cape Town. Not to forget that sunrise walk to the top of Lions Head. With regards to eating and drinking, we have numerous fabulous restaurants and local beverages to enjoy, I would just say try something completely local or authentic, anywhere in South Africa.
What are the best ways of getting around the country?
(KR): As a first-time visitor we would encourage a registered guide to assist with your planning and even travel if possible. The local airlines are well established and can easily meet your destination needs. Gauteng has a world class rail infrastructure in the Gautrain, to get you into the City of Gold. There are options for taxis and buses, and we would just advise that they belong to recognised bodies. For experienced visitors to South Africa, a self-drive option could make for the trip of a lifetime.
What trends are transforming the tourism industry in South Africa at present? How are you responding to these trends?
(KR): Three I would identify are technology, sustainability and a focus on service excellence. Our association stays abreast of what is happening internationally – and what works in South Africa – and shares this with members on a number of platforms. They apply this in their businesses, helping the tourism industry to grow.
How do you see the country developing as a business travel hub over the next year to two years?
(KR): With our convention bureaus in place we continue to see growth in this space. These entities are highly focused on the Tourism Ministry’s mandate to drive economic growth and with that we are fortunate to see the growing numbers in events and expos. There are always new facilities joining the South African meetings landscape. These properties will bring new and exciting spaces for delegates to enjoy.
Are there any plans or projects in the pipeline that you wish to highlight?
(KR): We are busy with the roll out of the RISE project, a skills development programme to facilitate entry for new suppliers into the business events industry. Having just had our 2019 congress, that had a very strong learning programme, we are already starting to work on 2020’s content and the framework of this event, to ensure we deliver as the lead in the conference industry. Also, in the next three months, we will be holding a strategic meeting to focus on where and what our next priorities will be.
Are you optimistic about the future of the tourism industry in South Africa?
(KR): Yes, you have to be. As someone recently shared with me, what you visualise you actualise.
CONVENTION CENTRES IN SOUTH AFRICA IN FOCUS
South Africa is home to some of the region’s most impressive conferencing and event hosting facilities. In the past the country has hosted global landmark events such as the 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP17) in Durban. In 2016, the same city hosted the 21st AIDS Conference at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, a venue which housed 18,000 delegates from 183 countries.
Durban is not the only major city home to world-class exhibition facilities, however. Among the other highly rated venues are Sandton Convention Centre (Johannesburg), Tshwane Events Centre, East London International Convention Centre, Cape Town International Convention Centre and CSIR International Convention Centre (Pretoria), to name but a few. As well as SAACI, an important organisation helping to promote and assist convention centres and event organisers is the South Africa National Convention Centre (SANCB).
A one-stop solution for independent information and assistance, giving neutral advice on all aspects of hosting and organising any business event in South Africa, one of SANCB’s major roles is to help venues bid and prepare for hosting conventions. In 2015, for example, South Africa hosted 140 international meetings and conferences at its various convention centres and event venues, attracting around 80,000 delegates and generating more than R1 billion in economic impact.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND
South Africa is home to a number of budget airlines such as CemAir, Kulula, Mango and FlySafair that serve most domestic routes at competitive prices. It is an easy way of getting from one major destination to another, especially given the long distances between some of the major cities. Shosholoza Meyl offers regular train services, including a popular overnight journey between Cape Town and Johannesburg that allows passengers to take in the vastness of the country’s landscapes. Travel by boat between the coastal settlements of Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Durban and onto the likes of Mozambique present an alternative way of getting around, with car hire perhaps the obvious and most flexible option.
Regionally, South Africa offers some tremendous cycling opportunities. Hills, views and campsites are in abundance, while bikes can be taken onto most trains. Local bus networks are extensive and usually cheap to use. In terms of international air travel, OR Tambo near Johannesburg is the major hub, with other significant airports to be found in Cape Town and Durban. National carrier South African Airways operates an extensive network of long-haul flights to destinations all over the world.

MUST-DO EXPERIENCES IN SOUTH AFRICA By Bernie van der Linde
ON BIG BLEND RADIO: Travel journalist Bernie van der Linde shares why South Africa is known as “a world in one country,” and discusses its diverse landscapes and experiences. Watch here in the YouTube player or download the podcast on Acast .
South Africa offers a unique blend of nature, culture, ocean, and unique thrill-seeking experiences. There are approximately 890 scenic mountain passes, 700 camping resorts, 42 game reserves, 450 golf courses, and 23 wine routes. No wonder visitors often say a two-week trip is way too short to experience South Africa!
Recommended must-do experiences:
Visit a wine farm. Most wineries across the country offer a variety of wine-tasting experiences and cellar tours. The most well-known wine routes are in the Cape Winelands, with world-renowned wine regions like Paarl, Franschhoek, and Stellenbosch. The Franschhoek wine farms have a hop-on-hop-off wine tram that gives you access to a variety of wine farms. Go on a safari. South Africa’s game reserves appeal to connoisseur safari trippers and budget-conscious travellers. Most private game reserves offer guided safaris on open vehicles, while Kruger National Park allows self-drive. Almost all our world-renowned game reserves have the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo). Addo Elephant National Park is a must visit in the Eastern Cape, and if you are visiting Cape Town, there are Big 5 safari experiences with two hours of the city. Participate in a thrill-seeking experience! South Africa has some of the wildest ziplines in the world, from Mossel Bay’s longest over-ocean zipline to the most scenic ones at Lake Eland, Tsitsikamma, Drakensberg, and Sun City. Bloukrans Bridge at Storms River is the world’s highest commercial bungy jump. Sea Point in Cape Town and towns on the Garden Route offer world-class paragliding experiences. Skydiving is popular with flight operators departing from Pier Road at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. Atlantis Dunes are a mecca for sandboarding enthusiasts.
Take a road trip . South Africa has some of the most scenic drives from the Panorama route along the Byde River Canyon with Burke’s luck potholes, Three Rondavels, and God’s Window in Graskop, to the Garden Route in the Eastern Cape and Route 62 through the Karoo. The Valley of a Thousand Hills, the Maloti Drakensberg Route, and Oribi Gorge in Kwa-Zulu Natal are must-dos for nature lovers. The route from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park takes you past culturally rich towns like Waterval Boven, Nelspruit, White River, and Malelane, to the wildlife-richest part of South Africa. The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve is a scenic road trip that’s only three hours from Johannesburg and leads you past Thabazimbi, Vaalwater, Lephalale and Mokopane. This biodiverse area showcases the Limpopo Province with its majestic Waterberg Mountain Range and is home to luxurious private game lodges. A trip from Cape Town along the West Coast features the towns of Langebaan, Jacobs Bay, Paternoster, Elands Bay, and Lambert’s Bay. The fynbos flower season is August-October. Take a helicopter flight or balloon safari. Take a helicopter flip over Cape Town and the neighbouring towns of Hout Bay and Camps Bay. On a clear day, you can get a bird’s eye view of the Atlantic coastline, the City Bowl, the Peninsula, and the Twelve Apostles Mountain range. Enjoy a balloon safari at the Pilanesberg (at Sun City), or Hartbeespoort Dam near Johannesburg. Stay at luxury hotels for a fraction of the price. Due to the exchange rate, you can stay in world-class five-star hotels for less than a third of what you would pay for a similar experience in the rest of the world. Outstanding hotels include The Oyster Box in Umhlanga, the Marine in Hermanus, La Residence in Franschhoek, and the Silo and Belmont Mount Nelson in Cape Town. Tintswalo Atlantic on Chapman’s Peak Road is a boutique hotel right on the water’s edge. The Saxon and Four Seasons Westcliff in Johannesburg are fabulous for a city stay. Get up close to nature. Experience penguin encounters at Boulders Beach in Simons Town, whale watching in Hermanus, the Five Shy Meerkats and Ostrich safaris in Oudtshoorn, or shark cage diving in Gansbaai, Mossel Bay or Rocky Bay in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Dullstroom in the Lowveld enroute to the Kruger National Park is known for having premier fly-fishing resorts. The Isimangaliso Wetlands Park offers unique turtle-tracking safaris. There’s even walking the streets of towns like Phalaborwa and St. Lucia at night to do hippo spotting! Go camping under African skies. Stay at game reserves like Dinokeng, Bontebok National Park, Addo Elephant National Park, and the Kruger National Park. There are also rugged camps like Tietiesbaai on the West Coast or Cape Vidal, Sodwana or Kosi Bay near St. Lucia, Oribi Gorge and Lake Eland Game Reserve. If you prefer a glamping experience, head to the Hex Valley at Karoo 1. Hike some of the most scenic trails. The Amatola is one of the toughest hiking routes in South Africa, while the Rim of Africa is the longest mountain trail, stretching over 650 km from the Cederberg to the Outenique Mountains. Frequently hiked routes include Table Mountain and Lions Head, Tankwa, the Otter and Leopard trails and the Tsitsikamma waterfall trail. Lesser-known but spectacular hiking trails include Hoerikwaggo Cape of Good Hope two-day trail (34km), Hangklip Trail (6km), Three Sisters Trail (8km), and Kogelberg Trail (24km) in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. De Hoop Nature Reserve has the five-day Whale Trail (55km). Do a food tour. With South Africa’s diverse culture, foodies are in for a treat with local culinary favourites like koeksisters, milk tarts, biltong, droë wors, and mielie pap. Try Cape Malay dishes in the Bo-Kaap, delicious curries in Natal (the Oyterbox Hotel has a curry buffet), or the Carnivore restaurant in Muldersdrift for venison. Play a round of golf in South Africa at world-rated golf courses. Three of the world’s top 30 golf courses are in South Africa (Leopards Creek, Links at Fancourt and the East Championship course at Royal Johannesburg). Unique experiences include predators joining you for a round of golf at Leopards Creek and Skukuza golf course in the Kruger National Park, to scenic courses like Pearl Valley (Paarl), Cathedral Peak (Drakensberg), Arabella (near Kleinmond), and the Links at Fancourt, Oubaai and Pinnacle Point on the Garden Route. You can do it at a fraction of the price you would pay in other countries. South Africa is often called the world in one country because it offers so many diverse landscapes and experiences. We invite you to see for yourself what makes this country so unique! Read more about South Africa here: https://travelbuddieslifestyle.com/category/africa-travel/south-africa-travel/

Stellenbosch
Lucy from On The Luce absolutely loved Stellenbosch, South Africa. Here’s why she thought it was so special…
South Africa’s Stellenbosch is heaven for wine lovers. Valleys full of vineyards surround the town, and along with neighbouring wine regions Franschhoek and Paarl, it’s home to hundreds of wineries. Stellenbosch is most famous for its Pinotage reds and Chenin Blanc whites, but there’s a whole range of different grapes and wine styles, including some tasty sparkling wines that give Champagne a run for its money at half the price!

Home Food and Travel advice on finding the right accommodation
So what is the right accommodation ? Well more often than not, it’s your travel budget that dictates the type of accommodation that you choose.
Expensive is not always better. Our team at Home Food and Travel will tell you that they have camped in areas with limited ablutions and had a wonderful holiday. They have also spent a night in a five star hotel only to be disappointed because their expectations exceeded the experience.
The reason for your travels will also affect your choice. A business trip requires different amenities to a beach holiday.
Our articles, reviews and experiences can certainly help you make your decision.
Restaurants with a good mix of service, food and ambiance
To my mind a great restaurant offers three things – excellent service, great food and a wonderful ambiance. Of these, service is the most important.
No matter that the food is delicious and the setting delightful, poor service can ruin the occasion. However, great service combined with mediocre meal and a plane jane restaurant can still be a pleasant night out.
We’ve eaten in restaurants that are really dirty but with incredible food and couldn’t help but give a rave review. We’ve also hardly noticed what we ate because the setting was just amazing.
However, the best restaurants come with the best of service, food and ambiance.
Spas are the ultimate relaxation aid
How do you know when you have had a great spa experience? The answer, of course, is when you doze off on the treatment table.
Well that’s our theory anyway. It also doesn’t take a grand location with enormous facilities for a spa to be really good
A small, personal spa that is owner run can result in the best massage you have ever experienced. However, the grand spas in five star hotels offer unsurpassed facilities in an environment that just makes the stress in your shoulders and neck melt away before you even finish checking in.
You don’t have to be an adrenaline junky to enjoy an exciting experience. In fact, what are commonly termed adventure activities usually have incredibly high safety standards and unblemished safety records.
Ziplining, bungy jumping and shark cage diving are all very safe. It’s just that our mind tells us we are craaazzzzyyyy to be doing this.
On the road to great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities
If you’re driving, be safe and make use of all the wonderful farm stalls that populate South Africa’s open roads.
If you overhear somebody asking a lot of questions or see someone taking photos of empty bedrooms chances are it’s one of our Home Food and Travel team members.
We’re out looking or those great places of accommodation, restaurants, spas and adventure activities.
See you on the road !

About the Publisher, Graeme Lund
The tourism industry has been my bread and butter for most of my life. It started with my incorporating a tour company in 1995 just as South Africa was opening to international tourism. I was the first qualified field guide in the Eastern Cape and later became the approved tour guide trainer for the region. At various times I have owned a tourist information office, an advertising agency specializing in marketing tourism businesses, sat on the board of directors of various tourism organisations and a been a publisher of travel magazines and websites.
Southern Africa is my home and the diversity of cultures, scenery and fauna and flora are what make it so special. I have a passion for exploring and have done so by driving, hiking, strolling, cycling, boating, sailing, diving and flying and know that their is still so much more to see.
Along the way their are so many amazing places to stay and to eat and they are an integral part of what makes this such a special place. These private and public tourism enterprises play a huge part in ensuring that our natural environment remains intact.
I am a fervent conservationist. I have served on the Board of Trustees of Bayworld and am currently a director of Bay Action Network Alliance. I believe that tourism is one of the few effective ways of protecting a dwindling natural heritage in the face of overpopulation and irresponsible and selfish exploitation of natural resources. Sadly conservation for conservation sake is as out of date as fax machines and typewriters. Animals and conservation areas must make more money from tourism than they can from exploitation to ensure their long term survival. It is for this reason that I love working with responsible tourism organizations around Southern Africa.
