Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge – Tsavo

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge was one of Kenya’s first national park lodges. The classic volcanic stone lodge is located in the heart of Tsavo West National Park’s Chyulu Hills. The lodge offers breathtaking views of Mt Kilimanjaro and the rolling volcanic landscapes of the deep green Chyulu Hills.

Kilaguni’s accommodations range from standard rooms to deluxe suites. Natural stone walls, locally inspired furnishings, fabrics, and artwork beautify the spacious accommodations. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, a mini bar, a safe, a hairdryer, and a private veranda with views of the water hole or the Chyulu Hills. The rooms also have air conditioning and ceiling fans to keep guests comfortable in any weather.

The central dining room and the outdoor rock-built bar are both beautifully designed and decorated in the local style. The dining room has a stone terrace with views of the wildlife-filled water hole. The bar has comfortable day beds with gorgeous views of the rolling Chyulu Hills.

Enjoy locally sourced seasonal cuisine in the dining room, or relax with your favorite beverage at the bar or daybed. Themed nights with specialties ranging from pasta and Mongolian-style stir-fry, BBQ, and spiced roast to Kenyan favorites. Special dietary needs can also be accommodated.

For the convenience of its guests, the lodge also has a swimming pool and sundeck, as well as a gift shop and business center.

They are either two-storey blocks overlooking the water hole or a series of charming cottages, or a lodging of luxury suites. They offer views of the water hole or Chyulu Hills. The spacious accommodations have natural stone walls and local  furnishings, fabrics and artwork.

Breakfast on Lion Rock

A vast embankment of volcanic rock, which rises from the plains and offers unique views, Lion Rock is so-called because it used to be a favourite lion haunt, including the famous man-eating lions of Tsavo. Today, the rock is used exclusively by the Lodge as a breakfast spot. Setting off early from the lodge, guests can enjoy a gentle game drive en route to the rock, arriving to find that a full English breakfast has been laid out for them on its summit.

Sundowners on Lion Rock

The Sundowner is an essential part of safari life and dates back to the time of the great safaris of the 1920s when elegant cocktails were always served while guests watched the magnificent spectacle of the African sunset. Timed to commence as the sun starts its descent, the Tsavo Serena Sundowner begins with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at Lion Rock just as the evening sky turns golden-pink to enjoy full bar service and cocktail snacks. Musical entertainment can also be provided. As night falls, you will be driven back to the lodge in time for dinner.

Mzima Springs

“Mzima,” meaning alive in Kiswahili, is a peaceful oasis at the heart of red-dusty Tsavo and this magical place is not to be missed. The pure water of the three Mzima pools filtered by the porous sponge-like soil of the Chyulu and the Shetani lava flow brings life to a unique ecosystem at only 40 kilometres away from the Chyulu Hills. With a daily supply of more than 250 million litres of fresh water, the pool provides an oasis of green. It’s a haven for fishes, birds, monkeys, crocodiles and hippos. The main attractions are the two nature trails leading to an underwater viewing tank built to allow visitors to watch hippos!

Roaring rocks

Once climbed, the Roaring Rocks will give you magnificent panoramic views, usually only seen by the eagles and buzzards that fly around these cliffs. Over the plain called Rhino Valley and the Ngulia, the Roaring Rocks, located near the Rhino Sanctuary, has long been an observation point for the protection of black rhinoceros and the fight against poaching. The eerie Roaring Rocks are named after the buzz of cicadas that inhabit them and the howl of wind that hits the bare rocks.

The Shetoni flow

A black lava flow of eight kilometres, 1.6 kilometres wide and five meters deep, is the remains of volcanic eruptions. They were subject of tales among local communities who named the flow “shetani,” meaning evil in Kiswahili, after it spewed from the earth when it was just 240 years old. Climbing the flow isn’t an easy task as the thick, black soil is composed of uneven chunks of solid magma.

Watering hole

The watering hole is located adjacent to the main building, where you can wine and dine while taking in the great view of the green Chyulu Hills and watching a spectacular wide range of wildlife stop by to quench their thirst.

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge is a luxury Safari Lodge situated in Tsavo West National Park , a 30-minute drive from the main Mtito Andei Gate. The lodge is located 260 km southeast of Nairobi and 240 km North-East of Mombasa on the Nairobi – Mombasa highway. Transfers by road from Nairobi take approximately 4 hours.

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge is the first lodge ever to be built in a Kenyan National Park and is superbly situated in the lee of Mt Kilimanjaro, encircled by volcanic splendor, adjacent to a teeming water hole and daily visited by vast herds of elephant, buffalo, and plains game.

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge has 56 rooms, of which 51 are standard rooms, and 5 Suites; (all non-smoking) have their own verandas, some overlooking the waterhole, some the Chyulu Hills, which are one of the world’s youngest volcanic ranges.

Tsavo National Park has plentiful wildlife and beautiful landscape to offer and that is what Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge has for you in store. Kilaguni’s waterhole is considered to offer the finest terraced savannah game viewing in Kenya, and at night you can listen to the sounds of herds of buffalo and elephants grazing outside your bedroom.

The dining room features a stone terrace overlooking the wildlife-filled water hole and the bar offers comfortable day beds with majestic views of the rolling Chyulu Hills.

There’s also the option of just lazing by the pool or treating yourself to a luxurious body treatment or picking up some souvenirs in the extensively stocked Africana Gift Shop. There is a rock-paved swimming pool in the lush gardens and games to keep children occupied.

Activities Available at the lodge include; game drives, guided walks, bush breakfasts, a Bush BBQ Dinner, a Visit To The Shetani Caves And Lava Flows, Visit To The Shetani Caves And Lava Flows, volcano climbs and trips to Mzima Springs, a set of crystal-clear ponds, fed by the meltwaters of Mount Kilimanjaro, in which the many hippos can be viewed from a submerged chamber.

Poacher’s Lookout, a great view of Kilimanjaro is 15 km from Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge. Roaring Rocks viewpoint is 10 km from the property, while Mzima Springs is within 15 km.

Great staff great waterholes with amazing wildlife

Absolutely everything was perfect. I visited at the end of a few weeks travelling, and was here to relax. I mostly spent my time on my balcony watching wildlife pass me by! It was absolutely perfect! So calm and relaxing, and just so surreal to see an elephant as you're sipping a g&t!!! The food was great, and all the staff were so attentive (special thanks to David K for giving me the perfect table at dinner!).I did 2 game drives, and although we didn't see too much, there was always something that made it special.

Perfect location with an amazing view to the nature. The water hole in front of the lodge was always full of animals. Very kind and polite staff. Our favorite waitress was the beautiful Liliana! Thanks her for taking care of us!

The food was exceptional across breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The property itself is well-landscaped and the watering hole view from the dining area was magnificent. We did most of the activities that you can do on such a trip: game drives, sundowners, massages, swimming, etc. Last but not least, the staff was amazing throughout our stay and ready to help at any given moment. Highly recommend for a serene getaway for a couple.

The location of the property is outstanding. It has a fantastic view in front of restaurant with constant wildlife to enjoy that are coming to the watering holes. On a clear day Mt Kilimanjaro can be seen. The staff was very friendly. The buffet had a nice variety to choose from. We enjoyed the balcony view from our room. Our parents were unexpectedly upgraded to a suite which they enjoyed very much.

Magical! Yes didn’t need to go on a game drive to see animals, they all group by group visit the waterhole and we could see them from the comfort of our room or the bar and restaurant. It was wonderful. The property has a big garden and a nice pool as well. Nice and kind staff as all Kenyans. The food was good and we really enjoyed our stay

Please note that park entry fees are not included in the rate and are payable directly to the park authorities upon arrival at the Tsavo West National Park entry gate. Game drives can be provided at an extra cost, charged per person per game drive. Airstrip transfers can be arranged at an extra cost. Full flight details are required at least 48 hours to your travel date.

Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge is a charming luxury facility and one of the luxury accommodation in Tsavo west national park , Kilaguni lodge is an eco-establishment located within Tsavo west national park lieing in a distance of 280 kilometers from Nairobi, a short drive from the main Mtito Andei Gate and 30 kilometers from Mtito Andei Railway station. 

The lodge is one of the first accommodation establishments to be established in Tsavo west national park, this lodge majorly offers accommodation to tourists visiting Tsavo west national park on a Kenya safari . The lodge is situated in a cool, tranquil and peace atmosphere with stunning views of Chyulu hills and the lodge’s structure overlooks its own waterhole which is visited by many animals such as elephants, buffaloes and many more. Kilaguni-Serena lodge also has a poacher’s lookout offering great views of Mountain Kilimanjaro which lies in a distance of 15 kilometers from the lodge and Roaring rocks view point which is in a distance of 10 kilometers from the lodge’s property.

The lodge offers many amazing and delicious meals from various locations such as central dining room, bush dinner, sundowners on roaring rocks. The central dinning was constructed overlooking the water hole offering travellers an opportunity to enjoy their delicious meals with sights of animals visiting the water hole to drink water. 

Kilaguni – Serena Safari Lodge has a rock-built bar overlooking the water hole, this bar offers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks of international and local brands. The bar is a perfect time to sit around and relax for an evening. 

The Lodge has a gift shop selling artifacts and many locally made items to travellers visiting the lodge while on their safari visit.

KILAGUNI SERENA LODGE

Kilaguni Serena lodge is in Tsavo West National Park on a ridge making you be able to view Chyulu hills at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.

It is roughly 280 kms from Nairobi and it can take approximately 5 hours to drive to the lodge.

From Mombasa it takes approximately 4 hours to drive there. One can also fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi approximately 1 hour to an airstrip which is 200 m away from the lodge and fly from Mombasa as well which takes roughly 50 minutes.

Luxury rooms and suites

Kilaguni Serena lodge has 56 luxury rooms 5 being suites and a dining room which you will be able to look at the water hole and view wild animals.

The lodge also has a rock-built bar which you will also be able to enjoy viewing wild animals while they visit the water hole to drink water.

The lodge hosts a huge population of elephants since there is a water hole, so it is relaxing and start your safari while having drinks or resting at the lodge.

It also offers bush breakfast, dinner, and sun downing and has a swimming pool for one to cool down since the climate around is hot and dry.

The lodge has dedicated staffs who are well trained, and they offer mouthwatering dishes both local and international.
