The 6 Best Horse Farm Tours in Lexington, Kentucky

horse farms to tour in kentucky

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

Lexington, Kentucky, is known for two things: whiskey and horses. Often referred to as the Horse Capital of the World, the city is home to more than 400 horse farms and the famous Keeneland Race Course (featured in several movies). It has bred more Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winners than anywhere else in the world. Race fans and equestrians alike flock to Lexington to see how these horses live and train. With so many venues to interact with these horses, it can be hard to decide where to start. Here is your go-to roundup of Lexington, Kentucky's best horse farm tours.

Jonabell Farm

Courtesy of Jonabell Farm

Jonabell Farm, home to HH Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, is one of the most successful breeding sites globally, producing more than 200 stakes-winning racehorses. This tour takes guests through the history and current-day practices of Jonabell, as well as an up-close viewing of their current stallions. A shuttle tour is also available, featuring a scenic drive over Jonabells’ 800 acres of paddocks to see the mares and foals on the farm.

Three Chimneys Farm

Three Chimneys is one of the most respected stud farms in the business. This tour takes guests through the palatial stables and allows for some facetime with their current horses. The tour continues on to walk visitors through the breeding process and all safety measures that Three Chimneys takes to ensure the health and safety of these prestigious horses. It concludes with a walk around the green paddocks where the horses enjoy acres of land. This scenic farm is an excellent stop for newbies or lifelong fans of the sport.

Claiborne Farm

Courtesy of Claiborne Farm

This 109-year-old farm is often cited as the "Horse Capital of the World." Claiborne Farm boasts 3,000 acres for its prized stallions to run and has been home to 300 sires of champions, 10 Kentucky Derby, and six Triple Crown winners. This tour lets guests view the breeding shed and current horses that call Claiborne home and ends with viewing the famous Secretariat's gravesite. This is a can't-miss for any horse racing fan—in fact, the Queen of England has visited twice!

Denali Stud

Courtesy of Denali Stud Farm

Denali Stud is a world-renowned horse farm that has trained a litany of winning horses and has sold more than $475 million worth of horses since 1990. A Denali tour will take guests through their impressive history and current breeding and training practices. In the spring, guests can get up close and personal with the mares and foals, and on lucky days guests have been able to watch foals be born!

New Vocations

Courtesy of New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

Get a unique view of what happens after the racing stops. New Vocations is the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the United States. Focusing on rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming, this organization saves retired racehorses from an otherwise uncertain future and promotes their use as riding horses, sport horses, or simply great companions. Working with more than 500 horses a year, New Vocations has managed to rehome more than 7,500 horses since its inception in 1992.

While not a farm tour, Keeneland is an absolute must for any equestrian fan visiting Lexington. The famous racetrack is also the largest thoroughbred sale site globally and offers several different tours that take guests behind the scenes of both the racing and sales sides. The horses' morning workouts are free and open to the public, and guests interested in betting during a race can talk to the newly instituted “bet-ologists” who walk newcomers through the wagering process.

Our tour guide Vicki, was super personable and funny and has an unbelievable amount of knowledge. Although I'm a horse lover I had very little experience with thoroughbred breeding and found it fascinating. We even returned to Keeneland on Vicki's reccommdation in the afternoon to watch the live his auction that was going on. Don't miss this if you are in Lexington! Read more Written September 23, 2021

Bourbon Tours

in Kentucky

There are few feelings more satisfying than a drink of mellow Kentucky bourbon. The state is known for creating the best bourbon in the world, and you can have the chance to sample that history firsthand. You’ll visit three area distilleries and learn all about the history of Kentucky bourbon and, of course, taste some of the finest liquor they have to offer.

We start at the Buffalo Trace Distillery where you learn about history, see the bourbon aging and finally see how the liquid is packaged. The Woodford Reserve has more than 200 flavors and can train you to tell the difference between the flavors. The final stop is the birthplace of Wild Turkey. Experience the full flavor of all-natural non-GMO bourbon filtered from limestone and made with water from the Kentucky River.

Fast horses, tasty bourbon, stylish boutiques, even a castle are found in this one Kentucky county

horse farms to tour in kentucky

The grounds at Castle & Key Distillery. (Castle & Key/TNS)

Where can you taste the world’s best bourbon, make the acquaintance of the world’s most famous Thoroughbred, tour the home of the “Paul Revere of the South,” shop for high-end antiques in a converted schoolhouse, and spend the night in a castle — all in the same small county?

If you said Woodford County, Kentucky, go to the head of the class.

ADVERTISING

Located in the state’s scenic Bluegrass Region, Woodford County offers enough to keep a visitor occupied for an entire vacation.

Start with the Thoroughbreds. Drive along US 60, and you will quickly discover that you are in an upscale neighborhood where the sprawling farms belong to folks such as the Sheikh of Dubai (Gainsborough at Darley) and Barbara Jackson, widow of California wine magnate Jess Jackson (Stonestreet).

Most visitors make a beeline for Coolmore at Ashford Stud where Triple Crown and Breeder’s Cup winner American Pharoah stands at stud.

The superstar stallion, along with his stablemate, fellow Triple Crown winner Justified, will happily pose for pictures with adoring fans. These guys preen, prance and mug for the cameras in a manner the Kardashians might envy.

If you want a Thoroughbred farm with history, opt for Airdrie Stud, which occupies part of fabled Woodburn Farm, considered by many to be the birthplace of the American Thoroughbred breeding industry.

Prior to the Civil War, it was Belle Mead Plantation outside of Nashville, Tennessee, that was considered de rigueur for quality blooded horses. During the war, however, these valuable Thoroughbreds were routinely confiscated by both Union and Confederate forces.

Belle Meade’s owner sent his best stallions and mares to Woodburn for safekeeping, thus sowing the seeds of the Kentucky Thoroughbred industry.

Many of Woodford County’s farms are available for touring through visithorsecountry.com

By now, you’re ready for some Kentucky elixir, right? Take a drive through some of America’s most scenic countryside (Old Frankfort Pike in the county has been designated a National Scenic Byway) to arrive at Woodford Reserve Distillery.

Situated on picturesque Glenn’s Creek, Woodford Reserve is the oldest distillery in the state, with a tradition dating back to early 1800’s distiller Elijah Pepper. On a tour, get a close-up look at the triple distillation process – from the copper pot still to the only surviving stone aging warehouses in America. Afterward, enjoy a tasting of the official Kentucky Derby bourbon.

If you’re still in a bourbon frame of mind, head four miles down McCracken Pike where Glenn’s Creek narrows to a trickle, and you will see a turreted castle rising above the trees. Don’t worry – you’re not hallucinating.

Welcome to Castle &Key Distillery where the legendary E.H. Taylor Jr. began making bourbon in1887. During his tenure, Taylor spared no expense in making what was then the Old Taylor Distillery a showplace.

Following Prohibition, the distillery fell into ruin for a half century – increasingly looking less like a Sir Walter Scott castle and more like a William Faulkner decaying Southern Gothic mansion.

That changed in 2018 when a multimillion-dollar renovation brought Castle &Key back to its original elegance. The castle, peristyle and springhouse with its chandelier and elegant columns were restored. The original sunken gardens were recreated and are at their best in summer when the hydrangeas are in bloom.

Finally, in 2022, the distillery’s Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon became the first bourbon produced here in nearly five decades.

Want to soak up the bourbon with some regional cuisine? The Stave, where the food is described as “sleekly sophisticated without being pretentious,” sits between the two distilleries.

In the summer, you can dine on a wooden deck among trees backing up to the creek and listen to live music.

The rest of the year, grab one of the hotly contested inside tables and indulge your taste buds with all manner of home-style cooking – from bacon jam grilled cheese and hot honey fried chicken to blackened catfish and grits and confit chicken leg served with creamy grits, roasted wild mushrooms, chili oil and herbs.

Appetite sated, it’s time for more exploring. Browse the boutiques and galleries of Midway before heading to the hamlet of Nonesuch (yes, really) and Irish Acres Antiques.

Imagine a place where staid New England drawing room meets 1930s over-the-top Hollywood glamor. You’ll find it at this rehabbed former elementary schoolhouse turned upscale antiques emporium where you can pick up a beautifully crafted Christmas ornament for $20 or walk out with a 200-year-old mahogany cupboard for $38,500.

In what was the school cafeteria, The Glitz is a restaurant that resembles a Tinseltown movie set, with its color scheme of black, silver, mauve and pink and its décor of smoky mirrors, gauzy drapery and hundreds of twinkling lights.

After a full day of touring and eating, anyone would be thrilled to head to a well-appointed luxury hotel for the night. Especially if that hotel is The Kentucky Castle, Woodford County’s version of Downton Abbey.

Originally built by a Kentuckian with deep pockets as a home for his bride, the Castle now offers a truly regal experience on a property spread across 110 acres of rolling Bluegrass countryside.

Accommodations are in the castle’s main building (where opulent features such as gilded mirrors, chandeliers, decorative molding, ceiling frescoes and a sweeping staircase are jaw-dropping); the turrets, or cabins on the outskirts of the estate, offer a glamping experience.

You’ve seen the horses, drank the bourbon, toured the unique places, sampled the food, and feel you’ve checked all the boxes.

Wrong. You haven’t even started drinking wine (Woodford County has four wineries), picking fruit at Eckerd’s Orchard or learning the lore of the rail at the Bluegrass Scenic Railroad and Museum.

Don’t worry. That just means another visit to “the most charming county you’ve never heard of.”

Farms, houses, UK Dressage Team barn part of Bourbon County storm damage

M ultiple structures in Bourbon County, including a barn used by the University of Kentucky Dressage Team, have been significantly damaged by Tuesday’s severe storm , according to Bourbon County Judge-Executive Mike Williams.

Most of the damage is located in the southern portion of Bourbon County near the Fayette and Clark county lines, Williams said. There were multiple reports of significant damage to agricultural farm buildings, particularly in the Winchester, Clintonville and Bethlehem roads area. There were also some reports of residential structure damage where trees fell on houses.

No injuries were reported, according to Williams. All the roads in the county are clear and open after officials cleared debris from the storm.

The damage to farms has led to horses escaping and running up and down roads in the county, according to Williams. The community has come together to help rebuild damaged properties.

One of the Bourbon County farms that suffered serious damage was Hidden Rose Farm . Chelsea Sherman, owner of the farm, reported that all barns and fences at the property were taken out by the storm.

Multiple horses received cuts and injuries from the storm and a veterinarian was examining the horses. Williams said a significant amount of animals in the county has been injured and Park Equine Hospital has sent veterinarians out in the community to assist.

A GoFundMe link has been created to raise funds to help rebuild the farm. Laura Palazzolo, the page’s creator, said a tornado ripped through the farm, causing the damage. The page has the goal of raising $30,000 and it has accomplished over half of that as of 2:30 p.m.

The farm is also home to the University of Kentucky Dressage Team, which is a UK club sport.

“The horse community is strong, and I would love it if we could all rally around her and give whatever support we can, whether it’s money, a place for horses to go, supplies, or just time to help with clean-up,” Palazzolo said in the GoFundMe page.

The National Weather Service is planning to send a survey team to Bourbon County to determine if a tornado touched down in the area. Williams said he will declare a state of emergency for Bourbon County.
