Review: Le Tour de France 2023

Welcome to our review of Le Tour de France 2023, another year, another cycling game made specifically for its fans.

NEW IN TOUR DE FRANCE 2023: – All 21 official stages of the Tour de France 2023 – Updated rider and team ratings – New Medium Mountain and Agility rating added – New “”grupettos”” between riders added – New challenges added to Race of the Moment mode – Distinctive bibs added for “”super combative”” and the best team – Improved rider behaviour and trajectories for more realistic races – Updated equipment items and official brands-

To add more realism to races and more variety in the race to win the Tour de France, ratings for Medium Mountain and Agility have been added. Based on the rider selected, playing and controlling your rider is now different. It’s easier to reach maximum speed and to take certain trajectories tightly with a rider like Wout van Aert than with Primož Roglič. But be careful, because the lower the Downhill and Agility ratings of your cyclist, the more control you need!

To add more immersion to the core of Tour de France 2023, we added two new bibs this year. You can now see and wear the “”super combative”” bib and the best team bib. Prove you deserve to wear these distinctions by showing your panache! As in real life, riders can form a “”grupetto”” to make a breakaway or if they have fallen behind. This helps to limit damage during difficult stages and conserve energy for future stages or the end of the race.

Like every year, the charades behind cycling stretch from daily races to the usual pretention of grandeur by its many teams in existence. Mind you that I am not a fan of cycling in its current form and I play this game solely for the purpose of this review. I do not watch this sport in real life, nor do I think it should exist. Sadly enough, this attitude makes me the perfect reviewer for this game. I look at it from a point of view that pretty much dislikes the genre/Sport and I am at the same time a very strict person towards the game.

Like many other editions of this game, the main attraction is the up to date racing course roster. Not so much the cyclists themselves, like you would expect with similar games like Fifa (yearly edition sports games), but there are just no 2 years the exact same. Like I mentioned in previous reviews, the presentations of said day courses, the best thing in this game. It is truly a piece of art that you just have to admire. From one city to the next, Tour de France games do this right.

Aside from that, I dont know the value of these games for non-cycling fans, quite honestly, like most racing games, they are boring as fuck. I cant help it, they just fail to impress me as a sport and well, that comes from someone that is from the same country as some of the greatest cyclers of all time, names like Merckx, Museeuw, Boonen, Bruyneel, … Fun fact, from all those mentioned, only Boonen did not use doping to win throughout his career, it was not just them, this entire sport is filled with doping and it just makes things so dislikable. I am happy the new generation like Van Aert and Evenepoel are legit cyclists at least.

So should you get this game? Probably only if you are a fan of the genre, the sport is too niche to be a real game to get.

In conclusion, it looks good, but often plays rather boring. I wish it was better, because it usually feels like a waste of time rather than an enjoyable game…

Tour de France 2023 Review

Neil Watton

Where do Nacon and Cyanide Studios go with their Tour de France video game franchise ?

It’s a question we’ve been considering for years, having taken in every annual iteration for the last decade or so, disappointed by the most minimal of changes with each new version. In fact, over that time of playing these official video games of the greatest cycle race in the world, we can probably count the number of really significant changes on one hand.

Although significant new features are the least of the problems. This, as a series, has only ever seen the smallest of graphical changes, and it very much feels like the audio is ripped across from one to the other with each new release. Gameplay rarely changes either. Copy and paste has been the friend of Nacon and Cyanide in the past.

Basic game modes are extremely familiar too – although we understand that only so much can be done with a ‘cycling’ game. Jump on a bike, ride it. With the niche that is being worked with, you can forgive that.

tour de france 2023 review 1

And so we come to Tour de France 2023 in hope. Hope that the roadbook has been ripped up, new ideas have been implemented and visual changes are plentiful.

With fear of spoiling the review, those amendments are extremely minimal once again. But, and whisper it, I think that after all these years, things are slowly coming together for Nacon, Cyanide and the Tour de France games. It’s not anywhere near a GOTY contender and it’s still not even the best ‘cycling’ game on the market – hi, Lonely Mountains: Downhill – but the small improvements and feature additions that have been implemented could well make this the best TDF game yet. The bar ain’t that high though and it probably says more for what has come before it, than what is on offer for 2023.

If you have ever played one of these games before, you’ll know what to expect. If you haven’t, it’s fairly simple. Tour de France 2023 will task you with riding the official route of the 2023 Tour de France, taking charge of the official teams and riders as you go. Whether you focus on one rider, or work your way through the team, issuing instructions as the race dictates, pretty much all your cycling needs and directeur sportif dreams are included.

Riding tempo, sprinting, chasing down the breakaway as you stay safe in the peloton; Tour de France 2023 works okay as a bike racer. Chugging down energy gels will ensure that glycogen levels stay high too, with you needing to keep an eye on these throughout. Just keep away from the dreaded bonk and life will be fine. If anything, it ensures this doesn’t turn into a full-on button mashing affair.

Taking in stages in real time is more than doable, but it must be said that anyone running entire stages and races at standard speed should be seen as a glutton for punishment. There’s a reason the devs allow for fast forwarding through stages to prime moments, or the opportunity to skip to the end of stages entirely. We’ve never been fans of complete stage skips, but the fast forwarding of the action is an utter godsend. Don’t be afraid to use it.

tour de france 2023 review 2

Utilisation of tactics and strategy is all part of bike racing and Tour de France 2023 allows for this replication in the virtual world. Yes, you’ll need to become one with the plethora of in-race menus and sub-menus, but once you understand what is needed to ‘enthuse’ your team, all is good.

The full Tour route is front and centre of this game, but there are other Monuments and Classics also available. Again, there’s nothing particularly new in terms of previous franchise titles, but it’s always appreciated to be able to race elsewhere. The Critérium du Dauphiné, Paris-Nice, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, Paris-Roubaix, the Vlaanderen Classic and Giro di Como are in house. There are even the World Championships at Imola, Dusseldorf and more to take in. Rarely does anything separate these once in-race, but at least these give the chance to test your riding skills over a variety of terrains, including the dreaded cobbles.

There are also inclusions of Pro Team and Pro Leader modes. As the name suggests, these let you take control of a ‘Team’ or a ‘Pro’, with a faint whiff of Ultimate Team stylings seeping through. It’s not nearly as in-depth as that, but at least you’ll get to create a team of has-beens and whip them into shape over multiple events and seasons, all in hope of eventually coming out on top. Away from the main race events, these could be seen as reasonable feature additions, but again, little has changed from years gone by.

And then there are the time-limited Challenges of the Moment.

For us, the short, sharp challenge options found in the most recent Tour de France games have always allowed for a bit of excitement; some quick time wasting opportunities when full stages and 21-race long events are out of the question.

Tour de France 2023 comes with two options this year – Race of the Moment and Downhill of the Moment. Both are time-limited and running on an ever-rotating schedule (which is fully dependent on Cyanide continuing to support things going forward), as you put your skills to the test and compete against others around the globe for leaderboard bragging rights. Whether it be a few stages in which you are left to post your fastest time, or the ‘A’ button sprint mashing of the Downhill descent one-off events, these once again prove to be highly addictive. Personally we’d like more depth to them, as once a time is set and some points have been thrown onto a leaderboard, it’s very much a one-and-done. But for the competitive cyclists, it’s the closest thing you’re going to get to some multiplayer Tour de France fun.

tour de france 2023 review 4

However you play, control-wise and Tour de France 2023 is okay. But you may find that actual control of a rider and bike can feel extremely twitchy. You’ll constantly find yourself bumping and grinding other riders too, coming to complete standstills as barriers come into play. But it’s nowhere near as bad as previous games in which riding through spectators and barriers was commonplace, so credit must go to improvement in that area. Never did I think that falling off a bike could be so much fun.

And Tour de France 2023 actually looks fairly decent as well. Stages are well-created and backgrounds can be detailed – to an extent. It’s a shame that standard cookie cut riders continue to be front and centre though. This is no more true than in the poorly presented, pretty laughable, podium cutscenes that feel at least five years out of date. In fact, they are nearly bad enough to put you off playing entirely as not a single rider looks like they do in real life. Surely some kind of visual representation of our lycra-clad cycling gods should be the next step the series takes…

But that said, there are new bikes and it seems licenses have been established for a number of brands. Cervelo are in place, as are Canyon, Ridley and Specialized, with the Tarmac SL7 sitting in S-Works trim. Yet big names are very much in the minority with generic non-brands still featuring. That may not bother a non-cyclist, but it’s the nerdy detail that is sometimes key to success.

And then we get to the audio and sound. We’re not really sure what we can say about this aside from the fact that it rarely, if ever, excites. It feels phoned in, ported direct from previous games, with just a smattering of new lines included. Ultimately, cycling is a tricky one to get right audibly, and it’s here where Tour de France 2023 utterly fails. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some good detail in the directeur sportif and commentary breakdowns on occasion, but we’ve been left shocked at the repetition and inconsistencies rather than buoyed by the info provided.

tour de france 2023 review 3

So we leave unshocked by what has been delivered in Tour de France 2023. Again, we are slightly disappointed that we’re once more playing the same game that we have for years gone by. Yet, in there somewhere, this one finally feels like it has just enough about it for cycling fans, or those intrigued by the brilliance of the greatest bike race in the world, to consider jumping in.

Much like in the real world, as Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard look to repeat the racing of the last few years, Tour de France 2023 continues to run the tried and tested route. However, whilst that real world racing constantly excites and wows, the virtual replication again struggles to reach the summit in the lead.

Tour de France 2023 is probably the best Tour de France game so far, but don’t expect this one to go ripping up the race. It’s still nothing more than a mid-peloton domestique.

Tour De France 2020 Review: Race Ya To The Top!

Tour de France 2020 is the definitive bicycle racing game for cycling enthusiasts, while racing and management sim fans will find something to enjoy.

Summer is not just a time for people everywhere to hop on their bikes for a cruise around their neighborhood, local park, or mountain trails. It is also a time for fans of competitive cycling to tune in to the Tour de France - one, if not the world’s premier cycling event that began in 1903. This year’s race was slated to take place from the end of June to the middle of July, but due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s race has been rescheduled for August 29th through September 20th. Of course, the threat of even being canceled outright still looms heavily as race day approaches.

Fortunately, French video game development studio, Cyanide, is here to save the day with the release of Tour de France 2020 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is also published by NACON, which knows a thing or two about quality racing games. While not without a few stumbles, Tour de France 2020 is the definitive bicycle racing game that cycling enthusiasts should play, while curious racing and management sim genre fans will also find plenty to enjoy about the game.

Training Wheels

Tour de France 2020 is, first and foremost, a game that’s made for competitive cycling enthusiasts and people who understand the terminology, strategies, and overall ins-and-outs of the sport. I, quite literally, don’t fall into any of these categories. My experience with bicycle games doesn’t extend beyond Mat Hoffman’s Pro BMX or random dumb races in GTA Online . I can’t even remember the last time I actually rode a bicycle other than a spin bike for exercise. I’ll touch more on this more in a little bit (I swear I have a point).

However, even those familiar with the sport can first take advantage of Tour de France 2020’s training mode, which provides accelerated tutorials for controlling your bike, managing your team, and learning moves and racing strategies that just might lead you to victory. The topics are quick and to the point, and it really doesn’t feel like the actual tutorial gameplay would be patronizing for those who know the sport. It’s simply a way to learn the game, with one playthrough being enough to familiarize yourself (and can be skipped entirely, should you so choose).

Race Ya To The Top!

Then, it’s on to the big race. The crème de la crème. In the actual Tour de France race mode, players will take on the 21-stage race over the course of 23 days (with two being used as rest days).

Getting started can be as easy as picking a team and starting. However, much of Tour de France 2020’s appeal lies in its customization options. From uniforms to team member names, there are a ton of options that allow players to customize their own Tour de France “dream team.” These customization options can be configured throughout the entire race, letting players adjust their strategies along the way based on where they stand in the race on any given day.

From there, it’s all about team management and patience. These definitely aren’t short races. Players can take control of individual team members during the race, while communicating and strategizing with them mid-race. A coach is also in your ear throughout the race (though not overly so), giving heads up about distances, pace, upcoming obstacles, and team member updates.

No “I” In “Team”

There is a major emphasis on team play. I made the mistake (more times than I’d like to admit) of controlling a single rider for the whole race with a lone wolf strategy, which worked fine for getting points by being the first up a hill or during a time-trial sprint portion of the stage. Once the finish line was in sight, though, and the rest of the peloton - which means essentially all of the other riders - came speeding up from behind, my rider would “blow up” and not be able to finish the race as strong as he would have had he worked with a team strategy.

Once the team-focused strategy clicked, I was not only better equipped to finish the races in a better position, I also began to learn more about competitive cycling as a whole. There is a lot that goes into every single race, and while I by no means now consider myself an expert in the sport, I feel like I would have a far better understanding while watching the real thing than I ever have before.

The Scenic Route

In terms of missteps, there are really not too many in Tour de France 2020 . All of the riders look identical, there are some stuttering graphics that allow riders to ride right through a fence, and it would have been nice to be able to make falling down an option, as that seems a pretty realistic occurrence with so many riders clustered together. These complaints, however, are pretty easy to overlook.

Cyanide has done well to incorporate quality of life features that add to the game’s fun factor. A feature that lets you easily fast-forward during the less dramatic parts of a race keeps the game feeling fresh for those wanting to move the game along a bit faster, while a brand-new first-person perspective has been added, putting players in the saddle and creating a new level of immersion. Other races are also included in the game, such as the Critérium du Dauphiné, Paris-Nice, Paris-Roubaix, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, also known as "The Old Lady."

Overall though, Tour de France 2020 is just fun to play. While the game is best suited for competitive cycling fans, Tour de France 2020 does a surprisingly fantastic job of introducing newcomers to the sport. I came into Tour de France 2020 with zero knowledge of the intricacies of the iconic race. Now, I can’t help but want to jump back in for another chance to win it all (which I still have yet to do).

A PlayStation 4 copy of Tour de France 2020 was provided to TheGamer for this review. Tour de France 2020 is available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

[PlayStation 5] Tour de France 2022 Review

Tour de France 2022 from NACON and Cyanide Studio is this year’s version of the classic Tour de France game series, where players will be following their favorite contestant and hope to win the challenge. Check our Tour de France 2022 review!

Fight for the yellow jersey in the official game of the Tour de France 2022. Experience the new online mode with weekly challenges and leaderboards. In Solo mode, you can now deal with incidents (injuries, illnesses) during the 92 stages available.

Tour de France 2022 from NACON and Cyanide Studio is my first dive into the Tour de France series, an annual biking simulator that will allow you to the complete 21 stages of the world-renowned Tour de France . As an amateur biker myself, I was excited to give this game a try.

The first thing you should do if you’re also new to the franchise is to follow the Training Mode that will help you learn how to control your bike. The controls themselves aren’t very hard to get the hang of. You’ll basically be pedaling automatically by keeping the R2 button pressed. You’re encouraged to watch colored arrows on the road to determine if you’re going too fast for an upcoming curve. You can also brake with the L2 button and take an aerodynamic pose if you’re going downhill to keep your momentum.

Tour de France 2022 PlayStation 5 Review

Race Mode is the main event as it’ll let you play the 21 stages of the Tour de France in almost real-time. You’ll begin each of the stages with an explanation of the course, and your goal will be to finish the race. The first one is only a few kilometers long, so it won’t take much time. But as soon as you begin the second stage, with its almost 200 kilometers, you’ll understand that the races can be really, really long to finish, easily reaching one hour each.

The gameplay will quickly feel a bit repetitive as you only have to keep the R2 button pressed, avoid other bikers and take some energy gel as you progress through each stage – and avoid running out of energy. Luckily, the developer has included a hidden Fast Forward feature which is accessible by pressing Circle and then R2 to go into the fast forward mode, so that you can jump ahead to the more interesting moments of the race, like crossing a huge bridge, or going uphill and downhill a steep mountain range.

Tour de France 2022 PS5 Review

You can manage your team in the Pro Team and the Pro Leader modes, and race of the moment is a new game mode in 2022 that allows you to follow a race against other players in online races and make your place up the new leaderboard.

New features for Tour France 2022

– New online mode with leaderboard – Race incidents (falls, illnesses…) – New preparation system – New interface on cobbled sections – More intense races with a more aggressive peloton and more collaborative breakaways – All 21 official stages of the Tour de France 2022 – New «Primavera classic» inspired by a major Italian Race – New Teams: Eolo-Kometa Cycling Team, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, and Uno-X Pro Cycling Team

On the presentation side, the graphics seem dated for a PlayStation 5 game. As the race start, you’ll notice how every biker has the same face, which is weird, and the NPCs around the track that are cheering for you look like they were made for a PlayStation 3-era game. At least most of the game is played from a third-person perspective, so looking at your character from behind felt more natural.

At least the bikes look great. There’s also a neat CGI cut-scene before each race that shows the race Parcours on a 3D map of France, which was always great to discover. I was surprised by the loading times since this is a native game that should make good use of the super-fast PlayStation 5 NVMe, and loading took about 20 seconds before each race. This isn’t outrageous, of course, but it is something that I wasn’t expecting.

Tour de France 2022 PlayStation 5 Review

If you’re looking at getting the Platinum trophy, then this is a game that will require some effort in order to reach it. There are 43 trophies (22 Bronze trophies, 20 Silver trophies, and 1 Gold trophy), and you’ll have to finish and win every race in the game. The few others are miscellaneous trophies asking you to play at the Legend difficulty and finish first in Pro Team and Pro Leader modes.

My experience with the Tour de France 2022 was a mixed bag. The graphics feel dated, and playing a race for as long as one hour per race felt a bit repetitive. The shorter segments did prove to be more fun to play. I was, however, impressed by how well the different courses were represented and how the bikes were modeled. If you’re a fan of the Tour de France event, then you might find this release interesting.
