Quad Cities River Bandits rewarding fans with free admission game in April

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - The Quad Cities River Bandits are rewarding fans after being named USA Today’s Best Minor League Ballpark in their 10Best’s 2024 Readers’ Choice travel awards.

The River Bandits will host a free admission home game at Modern Woodmen Park, 209 S. Gaines St., on Sunday, April 21. The announcement was made during a news conference Thursday.

River Bandit’s owner Dave Heller says the promotion is all about giving back to the community that has given the team so much.

“We have been here for 17 years, since I bought the team, and this community has supported us consistently,” said Heller. “I wanted to give back to this community and say thank you for supporting us, thanks for voting for us, and thanks for again making us the best minor league ballpark in America.”

In 2013, Modern Woodmen Park also earned the honor of USA Today’s Best Minor League Ballpark.

Palmer Chiropractic will be sponsoring the event, officials said.

Illini Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS -- Illinois baseball (16-13, 7-2) split its doubleheader today at Minnesota (13-13, 3-3), at Siebert Field, to earn a fourth-straight series victory.

GAME 1 | Illinois 7, Minnesota 4

The Fighting Illini broke through after a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning to defeat the Golden Gophers 7-4, clinching the series.

At the plate, Illinois was paced by Cal Hejza , who went 3-for-4 on the day with a walk and three RBI. Coltin Quagliano  picked up three hits as well, going 3-for-3 overall with a walk and two RBI. Four of Illinois' runs were scored with two outs.

Jake Rons got the win out of the bullpen for the Illini, with Joe Glassey earning the save by tossing 2.0 scoreless frames to end the game. Cooper Omans took no decision in the start, allowing just one run on two hits over 5.0 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Illini took the lead in the third when Hejza brought home Quagliano with a two-out single, but Minnesota would tie the ballgame in the fourth with a run of their own.

Hejza picked up his third hit of the contest in the fifth, which brought home his second and third RBI, and Camden Janik would also drive in a run to make it a 4-1 game.

The Gophers used a three-run frame of their own in the seventh to tie the contest at 4-4.

In the Illinois half of the eighth, a two-out infield single from Brody Harding put the Orange and Blue back in front and Quagliano followed by delivering the crushing blow in the ballgame, a two-out, two-run single to make it 7-4.

The score remained 7-4 for the rest of the game, as Illinois held on for the win, pushing its winning streak to seven games.

GAME 2 | Minnesota 8, Illinois 3

Minnesota jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two and never looked back, as Illinois had its seven-game winning streak snapped in an 8-3 defeat.

Cameron Chee-Aloy went 3-for-5 with a double, the lone Illini to have a multi-hit effort in the ballgame.

Regan Hall was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 3.2 innings, surrendering one run on three hits, walking one and striking out three.

Illinois were in an 8-0 deficit heading into the eighth before they pushed three runs across. Ryan Moerman collected an RBI on a single and Quagliano earned an RBI with a bases loaded walk. Chee-Aloy also tallied an RBI on a groundout.

The Illini were unable to get any closer, eventually falling 8-3 in the series finale.

Illinois baseball hosts Illinois State for midweek matchup

Graduate+pitcher+Cooper+Omans+pitches+for+the+Illini+on+March+27+in+their+first+game+of+the+double+header.

Illinois baseball (16-13, 7-2) returns home for a midweek competition against Illinois State (17-11) after winning two out of three games at Minnesota last weekend. This is the first and only time the Illini will meet the Redbirds after last week’s game in Bloomington was canceled.

In their third Big Ten series win of 2024, the Illini outscored Minnesota 21-14 across three games with 40 total hits. Illinois has won 11 of its last 14 games and just lost a seven-game win streak in the series finale at Minnesota.

Illinois State is coming off a series sweep, outscoring Valparaiso 20-2 over three games, including an 11-1 victory on Friday. Sitting a few games above the Illini, the Redbirds have posted more efficient offensive statistics with a .307 cumulative batting average compared to the .277 Illinois average. Successful at home, Illinois State holds a 6-2 record at Duffy Bass Field and the Illini are 4-8 on the road this season.

Leading at the plate for the Redbirds is senior infielder Luke Cheng with a .373 batting average and sophomore outfielder Daniel Pacella with a .355 average. Illinois State has four other qualified players batting over .300 this season and a cumulative slugging percentage of .487 compared to the .457 held by Illinois. Junior right-handed pitcher Tanner Perry is a leading arm for Illinois State with a 4.26 ERA, 4-3 record on the season and 41 strikeouts.

The ball will be in the hands of Illinois’ sophomore left-handed pitcher Sam Reed, who is 1-1 on the season with an 11.49 ERA. Reed recorded six strikeouts in four innings of work against Cincinnati earlier this season. Illinois State’s pitchers have performed slightly better this season than Illinois with a 6.03 cumulative ERA compared to Illinois’ 6.32.

History favors the Illini, who hold a 60-35 all-time record over the Redbirds, including a record of 29-17 on the road. The programs split their pair of games last season, with both teams taking a loss at home. In their last meeting, Illinois brought home the win by a 16-5 score. The Illini have won 11 of their last 14 games against Illinois State since 2015, and 10 of the last 11 that have been played at Illinois Field.

Fans can tune into B1G+ to catch this evening’s action and look forward to a three-game series at Illinois Field this weekend against Northern Illinois (10-21).

Images show the Great American Eclipse, seen by tens of millions of people in parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada for the first time since 2017.

Millions gathered across North America on Monday to bask in the glory of the Great American Eclipse — the moment when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.

The path of totality measures more than 100 miles wide and will first be visible on Mexico’s Pacific coast before moving northeast through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and upward toward New York, New Hampshire and Maine, then on to Canada.

During the cosmic spectacle, the moon’s movements will temporarily block the sun’s light, creating minutes of darkness, and will make the sun's outer atmosphere, or the corona, visible as a glowing halo.
