UNWTO Awards

The UNWTO Awards are the flagship awards for the global tourism sector.

What are the UNWTO Awards?

Since 2003, the Awards recognize the work of organizations and individuals around the world that positively impact and inspire the tourism sector through innovation and knowledge.

To date, UNWTO has acknowledged the contribution of distinguished scholars, inspiring leaders, as well as more than 80 initiatives from the public and private sector as well as NGOs. Their achievements serve as an inspiration for competitive and sustainable tourism development at a local, national, regional and international level. The contributions of the awardees are in line with the  Global Code of Ethics for Tourism  and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals .

Recognition is given in the following categories:

The  UNWTO Ulysses Prize  is given to a distinguished scholar, whether in academia, government or private industry, for outstanding contributions to innovation and knowledge in tourism.

The  UNWTO  Awards merit distinction in four categories for the significant contribution of innovative tourism initiatives which are both competitive and sustainable in their character.

  • UNWTO Award in Public Policy and Governance:  An initiative is highly innovative and managed by a public or public-private institution that reflects tangible and sustainable improvements in policy, processes, and governance. It works towards an inclusive model of tourism governance which involves diverse tourism stakeholders.
  • UNWTO Award in Enterprises:  An initiative presented by an enterprise that operates projects or offers products or services that are innovative in the tourism field. This innovation could be demonstrated through environmentally-friendly applications, social corporate responsibility engagement and other innovative contributions.
  • UNWTO Award in Non-Governmental Organizations:  An initiative managed by a non-governmental organization with a clear non-profit scope using grassroots, partnership, governance, and/or civil society actions as key factors for its achievements. The initiative is original and inspiring in its nature, objectives, resource management and results, highlighting tourism as a strategic tool for balanced and sustainable development in economic, social and/or environmental aspects.
  • UNWTO Award in Research and Technology : The Award distinguishes a visionary pioneer whose initiative has helped the private sector, a community, a destination or a country to maximize the opportunities related to the use of technology to advance in the development of sustainable tourism. The research project or technological innovation initiative is highly inspirational and has given evidence of its effectiveness with practical applications and a measurable impact in the tourism sector. * *Note: This Award has been discontinued for 2018-2019.

The UNWTO Ethics Awards  is conferred by the World Committee on Tourism Ethics to tourism companies and trade associations that have demonstrated excellence in the implementation of the principles of the Global Code of Ethics of Tourism within their business operations and Corporate Social Responsibility practices. Application is limited to signatories of the Private Sector Commitment to the Code of Ethics.

CHAIRMAN'S UPDATE

At National Geographic, we are always pursuing our mission to push further to illuminate the unknown and the spectacular. Travel fits perfectly within this broad mission, and we see travel as a positive force to inspire more people to care about the planet through exploration, science, discovery and, yes, a great trip shared with friends and family. Fifteen years ago, National Geographic and Conservation International came together to launch the first-ever global sustainable tourism awards that included rigorous on-site inspections, led by a team of international travel experts. Our goal was to make sure that what a company said they were doing on paper was real in practice. We sent film crews to document sustainable tourism in action and, in 2003, the first World Legacy Awards were celebrated on stage at National Geographic Headquarters in Washington, D.C., with Queen Noor of Jordan serving as our official Chairperson. The World Legacy Awards grew in stature and National Geographic went on to partner with ITB Berlin in 2015, bringing the awards to the largest travel-industry gathering on Earth. We look forward to the day when there may be no need to put "sustainable" as a qualifier for describing better tourism. We look forward to the day when helping to protect global heritage and improve local livelihoods will be expected of any travel outfitter, hotel or destination. So, nearly two decades after we first introduced the World Legacy Awards, we are now setting our compass towards the next frontiers of travel. We will continue to embrace exploring our planet while safeguarding cultural and natural treasures for future generations. As we push beyond the World Legacy Awards, we will embark on new stories and innovations, taking the positive power of travel further. We are proud to thank our friends at ITB Berlin, Adventure World, TreadRight Foundation, and Botswana Tourism, who joined us in making the World Legacy Awards a great success.

About the Awards

The World Legacy Awards honor the companies, organizations, and destinations-ranging from airlines to hotels, from communities to countries-that are driving the positive transformation of the tourism industry, showcasing leaders and visionaries in sustainable tourism best practices, and sharing their stories with millions of today's travelers.

This year's 15 World Legacy Awards Finalists - 3 each in 5 different award categories - span six continents and range from a global tour company working to alleviate poverty in Africa and Asia to a tiny Norwegian town that has revitalized rural economic growth by celebrating and protecting their cultural heritage. In the process, all are demonstrating how a great holiday can also make the world a better place. We asked each of the Finalists for their views on sustainable tourism. Here is what they had to say.

World Legacy Awards Judges are passionate visionaries, movers and shakers working to save the planet, promote peace, fight poverty and safeguard cultural heritage - united under the banner of sustainable tourism. Meet four of our judges who, in their own words, talk about what it is like to be a judge for the world's most distinguished sustainable tourism awards, and their thoughts on the travel and tourism industry.

The winner of Luxury Hotel Awards 2024 must come up with a professional template that will detail all the achievements of the year in luxury hotel management. Every entry in this category needs experts. You are a winner when you choose the right platform.

Hospitality Awards

If you are involved in a hotel, spa, or restaurant or you are an individual player in the sector, this is the time to blow your trumpet for the entire world. The time for the Hospitality Awards is here again. Entries are coming in for the awards in this category and you need a strong platform.

The success stories of past winners in this award cannot be told without the mention of a solid platform that helped in telling the story in words and very clear images. The platform can make or mar the chances of any vendor.

For the best results that count in Hospitality Industry Awards 2024, the right platform is required to help showcase your strengths and abilities over the past 12 calendar months. When you are well packaged, you can expect the best results on offer.

Travel Awards

You probably have counted the gains as a player in the travel industry in the year 2022. This time around, you can get more and the lens of international visibility will be beamed on your efforts through Tourism Awards 2024. This is a once-in-a-year opportunity and entries are on.

In any contest, everybody cannot be a winner. If you want to be counted on the list of winners in Travel Awards for the year 2024, then you need a professional platform that will help showcase your ability and worth to the world.

We are in an age where professionalism matters in every sector. If you want to excel in the Tourism industry Awards of the moment, then your entry must be handled by competent professionals. When you are properly managed, you can expect nothing but the best results on offer.

Airline Industry Awards

The tourism industry is not complete without mentioning the big roles that were played by the Airlines, Private Jets, Jet Tour operators, and other airline industries in the sector. Your role in this sector can add value to your brand in Airlines Awards for 2024. The selection process will be easy for operators that use a very strong platform.

If you have entered past events and you have gotten nothing to show for your efforts, it is because of the platform of your choice. No matter your scope or level of operation, you need a strong voice that will be there for you in the 2024 Aviation Awards.

When you are with a very strong platform that has a record of brilliant performances in the industry, the results will come your way. In the Aviation Industry Awards for 2024, you cannot be a winner without a strong platform.

Cruise Industry Awards

In the hospitality sector, the role played by the cruise industry cannot go unrecognized. The Cruise Liner Awards for 2024 is here again, and companies are putting in their entries. The majority of the entries are there to fill up the number. The contenders that have something to show over the years trust reliable platforms to give them the edge in the selection process.

The foundation for success begins with the choice of a reliable platform that will help push your interests in the award to the top. When you partner with a reliable host, the chances of your brand getting positive notice will be enhanced.

A company that is serious about getting the best results in the 2024 Cruise Awards must commit its entry into the hands of reputable platforms that have the ability and capacity to blow the trumpet at the rooftops. When you are handled and packaged by professionals, your chance of remaining the last entry standing in your category will be the brightest among the competitors that are competing with you.

Yacht Awards

Several arms come together to make up the hospitality industry. For those that are involved, in the movement of fun seekers across the various places of interest across the world, the opportunity to position their brand in the market is here again through the Yacht Awards 2024. Entries are going on and brands are putting in their nominations. All that is required to excel is the right platform.

A successful yacht company that wants to the top needs professional packaging. You cannot tell your story in a moving way that will send home the message without the involvement of the pros in the sector. History shows that past winners have the backup of reputable platforms.

If you want your company to be counted among the winners in this year’s edition of the Award for Yacht company, then your entry needs a professional touch and you will only get this through competent platforms. The vehicle that will make your entry visible is no other than a viable platform.

BGTW

BGTW International Tourism Awards

Details of the ITA 2022 will appear here shortly.

The BGTW International Tourism Awards (ITA) scheme recognises excellence in tourism projects in four categories:

international tourism awards

  • Best UK and Ireland Tourism Project
  • Best Europe Tourism Project
  • Best Wider World Tourism Project
  • The Armchair Award

Guild members really do travel the world, reporting back on projects and initiatives they think deserve notice. Some projects have cost millions and are well-publicised; others are simpler community projects that take just as much effort and love.

For the ITA, projects are proposed by members. Once verified, nominated projects are put out to BGTW members for voting.

The shortlist is announced at the start of September with up to six finalists in each of the four categories.

This year, the effects of the pandemic have severely limited opportunities for BGTW members to visit new tourism projects. To reflect this ‘The Armchair Award’ offers an opportunity for members to nominate a tourism project/tourism attraction that has demonstrated innovation by introducing a new virtual tour that can be viewed online.

The winners

The winners are announced at the BGTW Annual Gala Awards Dinner, normally held in November each year at The Savoy hotel in central London, and on the eve of World Travel Market.

In each category the project that received the most member votes will be awarded the title of ‘Best Tourism Project’. The remaining finalists receive a ‘Finalist’ certificate with those projects that made it through to the initial list of nominations receiving a BGTW Merit Award.

But whether a tourism project wins or not, this really is about taking part. Being nominated by members of the prestigious British Guild of Travel Writers as one of the best new tourism projects in the UK, Europe or the wider world is a significant achievement , and one that can be used to help promote the project to attract even more visitors.

The winners of the BGTW International Tourism Awards 2020 were announced online during the BGTW Really Big Reveal: bgtw.org/2020-ita-winners .

Maldives

This is officially the world’s best tourist destination in 2022

From entire countries to city breaks, these destinations triumphed at this year’s World Travel Awards

Ed Cunningham

The World Travel Awards are a bit like the Oscars of the travel industry – only they’re a bit less exclusive. Both travel industry pros and the general public get to vote for the world’s finest destinations, from cities to hotels, before the victors are crowned at a glamourous annual ceremony.

If you’re thinking that you might’ve seen quite a lot about the WTAs over the past few weeks, well, that’s because you may well have done. The WTAs have recently gone through the continents, revealing the best destinations in regions such as Europe ( find out more here ) and the Middle East ( more here ).

But this one’s the big cheese. This time the WTAs have revealed the best destinations in the entire world .

And top spot went to... the Maldives , which took home the title of the ‘World’s Leading Destination’. At a ceremony in Muscat , Oman, the island country also took the title of ‘World’s Leading Tourist Board’.

So where else did well at this year’s global WTAs? Well, Vietnam took home a whopping five prizes, including ‘World’s Leading Heritage Destination’ (which went to the country as a whole), ‘World’s Leading City Break Destination’ ( Hanoi ), ‘World's Leading Nature Island Destination’ (Phu Quoc), ‘World's Leading Town Destination’ (Tam Đảo) and ‘World's Leading Regional Nature Destination’ (Moc Chau).

Jamaica also did really well in this year’s WTAs. The Caribbean nation won ‘World’s Leading Cruise Destination’, World’s Leading Family Destination’ and ‘World’s Leading Wedding Destination’. Not bad, eh?

You can check out all the winners of this year’s WTAs here – and find plenty of top travel inspo for the year ahead!

Responsible Tourism Awards 2023

Facebook

This page, as with all the others on this site, is available in twenty languages - select your preference in the box top right

The 2023 Responsible Tourism Awards were launched on November 6th

This is your chance to be recognised as a leader in Responsible Tourism and to put your company on the world map. Those awarded Gold in the regional awards are automatically entered into the Global Awards presented in London in November.

Free to enter, the 2023 Awards are split into four regions: Africa, India, Latin America, and the Rest of the World. Each region’s winners will also go forward to compete in the Global Awards presented in November.

There is no Rest of the World regional award in 2023

Africa & latin america: - now closed, india: - now closed.

The ICRT India Awards are being promoted with the support of Fairfest Media ( TTF and OTM) and will be presented at BLTM - Business + Leisure Travel and MICE at the Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, Delhi 29-30 September. The Gold winners in each category will automatically be entered into the Global Responsible Tourism Awards.

In each region, we present three categories of Awards - Gold and Silver and One to Watch. Gold winners are automatically entered into the Global Awards, sometimes when there is no entry from the region likely to win at the Global level we do not award Gold. We used to make a Bronze Award but abandoned this some years ago. We now use One to Watch. We often see great applications which tell us about new initiatives. We are reluctant to give Gold or Silver to new initiatives which have not yet had time to establish and prove themselves. One to Watch means that the judges would like to receive another application in two or three years when the applicant  can be considered for Gold or Silver.

Entering the World Responsible Tourism Awards 2023 can help build your brand reputation with increased PR and press opportunities. It also offers the chance to connect with industry leaders from around the world. Don’t miss out. Request a form to apply – it’s quick, easy and free.

There are 6 categories for the  Global Awards in 2023

  • Best for Tackling Plastic Waste
  • Best for Meaningful Connections
  • Best for Local Sourcing, Craft and Food
  • Addressing Climate Change
  • Best for Diversity and Inclusion
  • Best for Nature-Positive Tourism
  • Best for Tackling Plastic Waste

Plastic waste is one of the major environmental crises impacting the health of our planet. The tourism industry generates waste through single-use plastics. The sector also suffers from plastic waste generated by others which pollutes water courses and beaches and adds to littering in destinations. Destinations and tourism businesses can address plastic waste by banning single-use plastics, removing plastic from public spaces and nature, and disposing of it safely. Initiatives that upcycle waste plastic and sequester it, generating sufficient revenue to pay for waste plastic to be collected, can take the plastic waste out of our environment at scale. Our oceans require urgent action at scale. The judges are looking for examples where a tourism business or destination has developed ways of removing plastic waste.

Some forms of tourism build relationships between visitors and communities through the experiences they provide, treating visitors as "temporary residents"; they generate repeat 'guests' who will return many times, some yearly. Storytelling plays a role in creating meaningful connections. These benefit both the host and the guest. Where the local community is empowered in shaping the tourism offer, they will, as hosts, encounter tourists who value their place and what it offers. The guests have a great holiday, recommend the place to their friends and relatives and are likely to return.

Sense of place contributes to the tourist experience. Local tastes of food and beverages, soft furnishings, and art and craft souvenirs enrich the visitor experience and the local community by creating additional livelihood opportunities. These are complementary products that grow the local tourism economy. The livelihood benefits of tourism for local communities are greater when tourism businesses, tour operators, guides, accommodation providers, restaurants, cafes, bars and tourism authorities and local governments encourage the development of local craft and food production for visitors.

Each year the impact of climate change becomes more evident and, for many, more extreme. Drought, floods, wildfires, and extreme weather conditions cause devastation for communities and businesses in destinations on all continents. The judges are looking for examples of initiatives which

  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport, accommodation, attractions and tourism services in destinations, and
  • Increase the resilience of tourism businesses and destinations in the face of climate change.

The Responsible Tourism Awards aspire to recognise businesses and destinations addressing climate change and to encourage others to adapt and adopt similar initiatives. We must increase our resilience to live with climate change and reduce emissions to avoid making it worse for our children.

Tourism relies on diversity. We travel to experience other peoples' places, climates, built heritage, lived culture and the world's diverse nature. But how diverse and inclusive is our industry?

The judges are looking for examples of inclusive tourism, in employment and in the experiences offered to tourists. The judges are seeking to recognise

  • tourism businesses that avoid gender, ethnic and LGBTQ+ discrimination and which employ the differently abled; and
  • businesses and destinations which have created safe and meaningful visitor experiences for women, the differently abled, LGBTQ+  and travellers from the diaspora, making accessible to all our cultural diversity.

Wildlife and the natural environment are important motivations for travel. Nature is essential to our industry, those who transport travellers to wildlife destinations, those who provide accommodation, and the tour operators and guides who market it and make it accessible. The judges are seeking examples of tourism businesses and destinations that reduce negative impacts and positively impact the maintenance of the natural environment and biodiversity.

Japan Travel Awards promote inclusive tourism

The 2024 grand prix winner was Zerogravity, a marine activity provider with a focus on accessible tours and accommodation.

There are so many groups handing out travel awards now that it’s almost necessary to award the awardees in order to make sense of it all.

If there’s any area where Japan’s top travel destinations lag behind the rest of the world, and where there’s a yet-to-be-filled niche for a voice to cut through the void, it’s accessibility. Thousand-year-old temples aren’t wheelchair friendly, and the majority of tour operators outside of major cities struggle to communicate with travelers who can only speak English (leaving aside other non-Japanese languages).

Enter the Japan Travel Awards (JTA). While currently far from a global player, the JTA is filling a void for recommendations on forward-looking travel-centric organizations and creating opportunities for small businesses to take stock of their current place in the tourism industry.

The JTA is an annual awards show that began in 2022 to put the spotlight on “remarkable travel destinations in Japan.” Specifically, it looks to highlight tour operators, destinations and more that demonstrate efforts to promote diversity, inclusion, equity (DEI) and sustainable practices.

This year marked the JTA’s third awards ceremony and the first to be held in person. Though small in comparison to other similar events, with around 100 people in attendance, what shines through is its honest attempt to promote those doing good in the industry.

A different approach

While it isn’t unheard of for companies to start events or award ceremonies where the goal seems centered on expanding their own business, such as the Luxury Japan Award held by travel agency Luxury Japan, the JTA differs with a non-profit approach that allows businesses of all sizes to enter.

This year’s Japan Travel Awards ceremony was held at the Tokyo American Club, where a total of 63 entrants vied for 10 awards across different categories.

In order to get a well-rounded overview of each entry, judges visit the locations of the finalists in person. This travel is covered by the company that runs the awards, Shiitake Creative Inc. (full disclosure: I work for Shiitake Creative on a freelance basis), and the judges are made up of four employees and four external experts in the fields of accessibility, sustainability, LGBTQ+ communities and Japan inbound tourism.

To provide equal footing, there is no entry fee or other costs associated with applying for the awards — a feature common in Japan when it comes to acquiring industry-specific commendations. However, any accommodation or experiences must be covered by the entrant.

Notably, the JTA judges reserve the right not to bestow an award if, in their opinion, nothing merits the commendation. Last year, no winner was awarded for the category of best LGBTQ+ friendly travel. As the website stated in reference to applicants: “This was due to the lack of sufficient visibility of (applicants) efforts to appeal to travelers from the LGBTQ+ community on official websites, social media channels and other promotional tools.”

Awards in Japan focused on DEI and sustainability in tourism on this kind of level playing field are a rarity. The D&I Awards, for example, focus on internal DEI policies within companies, while the Japan Tourism Awards makes no mention of DEI criteria, though it does involve sustainability to an extent. With the JTA’s focus on both DEI and sustainability, alongside its low barrier to entry and extensive feedback from judges, it gives small businesses a chance to enter and learn how to improve on multiple aspects.

When asked about the origin of the JTA, Shiitake Creative co-founder Ally Hongo says: “We wanted to encourage the smaller businesses who feel like it’s difficult to compete with larger players like travel organizations or places that have been heavily promoted overseas.”

The winners

This year’s awards ceremony was held at the Tokyo American Club. There were a total of 10 awards across different categories, including one grand prix given to the most outstanding candidate. This year saw a total of 163 entrants, just over double the 80 that applied in the first year.

Zerogravity director Yuta Kawamoto speaks during the ceremony of his goal of allowing wheelchair users and those with mobility issues to have the same experience participating in aquatic sports as everyone else.

The 2024 grand prix winner was Zerogravity , a marine activity provider with a focus on accessible tours and accommodation. The Kagoshima-based facility opened in 2016 with the goal of allowing wheelchair users and those with mobility issues to have the same experience participating in aquatic sports as everyone else. Zerogravity achieves this goal in different ways, such as by having its own boat that allows wheelchair users to be lowered into the water, providing a wheelchair-accessible pool for pre-dive practice and even offering clear-bottomed kayak tours for those unable to enter the water.

According to the JTA website, Zerogravity was chosen for the grand prix for “its dedication to creating an accessible marine sports facility that everyone, regardless of physical abilities, can enjoy with their loved ones. (And for) their achievement of establishing a one-of-a-kind destination in Japan that is not only open to all, but also sets groundbreaking standards in an industry that is often perceived as inaccessible.”

Selection process and expertise

The panel of judges was made up of eight people. Four were experts in specific fields, and the other four were staff members of Shiitake Creative.

While no award was given in the best LGBTQ+ friendly travel category last year, the Hotel Palm Royal Naha in Okinawa won the award this year for their “dedication to establishing a safer, welcoming, and engaging place for all members of the LGBTQ+ community,” according to the JTA website. This was also made clear on their social media and on-site.

A big part of last year’s lack of award was simply due to low visibility of LGBTQ+ friendliness on websites and in promotional tools. Despite this relatively low bar, many places around Japan fail to reach it. The judges were happy to see what Hotel Palm Royal Naha was doing this year and hope that they “can serve as an example to other similar businesses in Japan.”

One thing that many of the judges agreed that was overall lacking this year, though, was English support. A core value of the awards is that the destinations are welcoming to everyone, and that includes non-Japanese speakers.

“There were so few places with any English website or English in their social media,” notes sustainability expert, judge and Japan Times contributor Joy Jarman-Walsh.

“There is just not enough information available in English, particularly about accessibility,” agrees Josh Grisdale, an accessibility expert and fellow judge. “(Some businesses) have an incredible website and incredible information on accessibility in Japanese but they had no page at all in English. ... If there’s no English information, (international tourists) are not going to know about that destination at all.”

However, Walsh noted that one of the winners, Naniwa Issui , was meeting that expectation and more.

Kumiko Ito, senior manager of the Togakushi Tourism Association, said participating in the awards opened her eyes to all the things her company could be doing to better serve visitors.

“They have an amazing website,” she says. “Not only English access, but allergies, vegan, vegetarian-friendly. ... I’ve never seen a website in Japan that is so careful about that, like certain food dyes which were derived from an insect.”

Inspiring change

Despite its small size, the JTA delivered its message that while progress in the country’s travel industry is welcome, more needs to be done. That clear impact was felt even among those who walked away with hardware.

“There are a lot of things that we need to update before we apply for the Awards again,” says Kumiko Itoh, senior manager of the Togakushi Tourism Association, the winner of the best destination development category. “We say that we are doing universal tourism, and we have facilities for those with physical disabilities, but when it comes to those with hearing or visual difficulties, there is still much to be done. This has been the impetus for us to start working on those things bit by bit.”

Zerogravity’s director Yuta Kawamoto agrees.

“There was a lot to learn from what the other award winners were working on that we hadn’t thought of.”

For those that take these lessons to heart, demonstrated potential awaits. At the 2022 JTA ceremony, Accessible Travel Fukushima took home the grand prix commendation — something that changed its outlook going forward.

“After winning the grand prix, two things changed,” says director Yukari Sato. “One was our confidence. ... Another was the understanding of those around us. After we received the award, we received a special feature in the Fukushima Guide, which is owned by the Fukushima City Tourism Convention Association. Since then, our accessible sightseeing information has come to the attention of the general public.”

2018 winners

international tourism awards

Best Design – The Saskatchewan Science Centre, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The design for the newly refurbished 2 nd floor restrooms was inspired by the boreal forests of northern Saskatchewan. There is floor to ceiling visuals of the deep forest and audio of birdsong and woodland sounds. Whole wall panels are covered in immersive images of the calming deep Canadian forest by award winning photographer Todd Mintz.

Judge’s comment: In judging this restroom, visual design scored very high. The loo is a fully immersive experience by vision and sound. The toilets inside the science centre are like stepping into another world where you can do your business amid the sights and sounds of nature – without having to worry about bears. Overall, really well thought through.

Best Economic Contributor – The Cummins Mosaic Loo, Cummins, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Australia. The local community converted a bland red brick toilet block from the former railway station into a public loo with personality. Due to word of mouth, tourists now seek out the rest rooms, which feature statues, mosaics and paintings reflecting a more genteel bygone era from the early 20 th century. Local businesses now benefit from passers by stopping to visit the old fashioned themed loos in the centre of town.

Judge’s comment:  The way the Cummins community re-invented what was an old existing facility to bring it back to life in a new and quirky way was excellent. The public toilets in the town have become a tourist attraction in their own right, which shows smart thinking by the local community. Unlike some entries in the awards, Cummins has few visitors. They have therefore done a great job creating a ‘must-see’ attraction that generates income for local businesses.

Best Location – The Hotel La Jolla (A Curio Collection by Hilton), Shores Drive, La Jolla, California, USA. Sitting on the 11 th floor overlooking La Jolla and the sea, the restroom offers a breathtaking view of the coastal urban village of La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean off San Diego.

Judge’s comment: Guests can enjoy absolutely stunning views of La Jolla and the Pacific from the rest rooms. Facing the coast, the large windows let in natural light which complement the restrained earth tone hues of the bathroom interior. The view from the loo connects visitors to the beautiful destination that surrounds them. Guests experience a wonderful vista bathed in constantly changing ocean light.

Best Accessible Toilet – Brisbane Airport, Queensland, Australia. Brisbane Airport’s upgraded accessible toilets have been designed to exceed accessibility legislation. Dedicated changing places facilities allow for specialised equipment such as an adult change table, hoist and a toilet with removable hand rails for people with severe disabilities. The spacious, flexible design makes travel accessible to thousands of people with disabilities and their carers, many of whom were previously deterred from travelling. Sophisticated digital reporting ensures constant cleanliness. Brisbane Airport even has an indoor loo for guide dogs that travel with people with disabilities.

Judge’s comment: Brisbane Airport’s accessible loos have set a new standard in enabling accessible travel. Their whole approach has empowered travellers with disabilities and made it much easier for them and their carers to meet their needs with dignity and comfort. The loos for guide dogs also show that Brisbane Airport cares and taken a holistic approach to accessible travel.

Quirkiest Experience – Bowl Plaza, Lucas, Kansas, USA. Bowl Plaza is a public restroom with bling! The restrooms, which took four years to build, are now a major attraction in Lucas, the small town grassroots arts capital of Kansas. The bathroom’s walls are covered inside and out with detailed mosaics created by local residents and artists. The entire building is shaped like a toilet tank. The entrance is designed like a raised toilet lid with benches that represent the curved toilet seat. The sidewalk to the loos flows from a large concrete toilet roll. Plaza Bowl is now very popular with residents and tourists and has its own guest register.

Judge’s comment: The Plaza Bowl public toilet shows great community involvement that reflects Lucas town’s well-earned reputation as a leading grassroots arts destination. The walls are covered with shards of porcelain, commemorative plates, kids’ action figures, toy cars, face masks and effigies. The whole space is a quirky altar to creativity run riot. Kids and adults love it. Bowl Plaza is now a major attraction in itself.

Overall Winner – The James Bond Loos at Piz Gloria, Murren, Switzerland Located at 2970m at the top of Mt Schilthorn in Switzerland, the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant and visitor centre has embraced a James Bond theme since the location was used as Blofeld’s Lair during filming of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” Refurbished in 2017, the toilet experience now has James Bond audiovisual effects: Bond girl Diana Rigg appears in the mirror when men wash their hands. There’s a sign for men in the toilets saying, “Shake, don’t stir” and “Aim like James.” The ladies’ loo has music and a shot ringing out as an image of James Bond appears in the mirror beside a bullet hole. In the ladies restroom there’s an audio of Bond saying, “Tonight, my place – just the two of us.”

Judge’s comment : Apart from the wonderful scenery at Mt Schilthorn, the James Bond loos are also now a fun reason to go. The toilets have immortalised James Bond and added a surprising humorous element to sightseeing in the one of the most dramatic locations in Europe.

2017 Inaugural Toilet Tourism Winners

international tourism awards

(Centre) Overall winner Toowoomba Portable Toilets; basking crocodile under the cliffhanger loo (top right) at Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territories, Australia; (and clockwise from there) Arthurs Seat accessible toilet in Victoria; Outhouse race in Wisconsin; loo at Kathleen Buzzacott Art Studio Central Australia; Hahei Holiday Resort toilet entrance in New Zealand; (and below the crocodile), the Southern Highlands Welcome Centre’s informative loos in New South Wales.

Toilet tourism can really create bigger impact towards the overall experience of the tourists in a certain destination. Great loos in tourism destinations become talking points, encourage repeat visits and can be a positive indicator of how the host community respects tourists. When visitors stop to spend a penny, they usually spend more than that and end up boosting the local visitor economy and creating jobs.

Those are the findings based on research by Carolyn Childs and Bronwyn White, co-founders of MyTravelResearch.com . The duo organized the inaugural 2017 International Toilet Tourism Awards to show the clear link between toilets and tourism success.

In 2017 there were 30 entries from around the world – including a place where you can ‘do the business’ overlooking a creek with crocodiles and an art studio where guests pull up chairs to admire the toilet doors.

The winning tourism toilets across all six categories in 2017 were:

Best Economic Contributor – The Loos at the Southern Highlands Welcome Centre (the former Mittagong Visitor Information Centre), Main St, Mittagong, NSW, Australia. Refurbished in late 2015, the makeover at the Southern Highlands Visitor Centre loos included flowers, posters, audio reel, and quirky fact stickers and free Wi-Fi. Since then, visitation to the centre increased from 60,000 to 72,000 2015/16. Local product sales in the SHWC have risen 19%. Regional visitor expenditure has increased from $250m to $261m. Visitor expenditure contribution to the region has helped sustain 2500 jobs (up 9%). And the loos and the centre have achieved a customer satisfaction rating of 93%.

Judge’s comment: “Despite a very small decorating budget for the toilets, the SHWC has been wonderfully innovative with their colourful, fun and informative loos concept. And this shows in the direct and indirect economic returns when visitors stop to spend a penny and then see what’s available locally.”

Best Location – Cliffhanger Loo with a View, overlooking the sea, Cobourg Peninsula, Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, Northern Territories, Australia. The loo is on a cliff overlooking the pristine beach and waters of the Cobourg Marine Park. In the privacy of the toilet the occupant can marvel at the lagoon water ten metres below where crocodiles bask on the sand and reef sharks hunt for prey. The WC is waterless, odourless and converts fresh waste into organic humus. A guest said: “It’s like watching a National Geographic documentary while sitting on the loo.”

Judge’s comment: “Cheeky, audacious, simple and environmentally sound, the cliffhanger loo has capitalized on its location perfectly and has become an attraction in itself.”

Best Design (Joint Winner): Hahei Holiday Resort, Coromandel, New Zealand. The new toilet and shower block here is part of a glamping backpacker lodge designed to personify eco beachfront coast chic using as much reused and carbon friendly products as possible. Easy access ramps with sensor lighting and native plants in an atrium lead to oversize showers and loos. The conveniences have light opaque roofing for natural light, open trusses and external gable ventilation, with plenty of recycled native timber featured, including LED lights in old beer bottles and ceramic sinks from a hospital.

Judge’s comment : “The beautiful approach to the toilet and shower block and the light and airy design using local products has made the loos at Hahei Holiday Resort an exemplary lesson in design.”

Best Design (Joint Winner): The Kathleen Buzzacott Art Studio, Alice Springs, Central Australia, Australia. Built in 2016, the loos were added for the convenience of tourists visiting Kathleen’s studio. Kathleen painted the loos,  and her husband is a traditional owner of the land. The beautiful toilets complement the stunning landscape and highlight the connection to native heritage and culture through the story-telling toilet doors, which feature indigenous central desert dot paintings.

Judge’s comment: “Unpretentious, simple and elegant. The design of these toilets perfectly complements the existing artist studio. A harmonious balance of architectural design and artistic creativity has produced this visually spectacular work of art. The building is an extension of the artist’s creative space. People pull up chairs to sit and admire the toilet doors, which tell their own Aboriginal stories.”

Quirkiest Toilet Experience – Dunnies with a Difference, the Toowoomba Portable Toilets, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. The ‘people with the orange toilets’ design and manufacture public toilets for events. Most notable is their prestige range – Dunnies with a Difference – which includes the Rustic Cottage, the London Telephone Box, Brighton Beach House, and the VIP unit. Each one includes hand sanitation, hand wash and sunscreen stations.

Judge’s comment: “The Dunnies with a Difference range transform toilets from something you hide at outdoor events into wonderful quirky attractions that add real value because they are so pretty, functional, hygienic and mobile.”

Toowoomba Portable Toilets are also the overall winners in the awards. MyTravelResearch.com will donate $2000 to UN Toilet Day on their behalf.

Best Accessible Toilet – Arthurs Seat Public Toilet, Arthurs Seat Park, Victoria, Australia, run by Parks Victoria. Opened in January 2017, the toilet amenities building has been thoughtfully designed to meet the toileting needs of a diverse range of visitors to Arthurs Seat State Park such as tourists with disabilities, mobility limitations, visitors with young children, older people and tourists from culturally diverse backgrounds (e.g. there’s an Asian squat toilet).

Judge’s comment : “Beautifully designed; thoroughly functional, modern and inclusive; a highly impressive addition to the destination experience. I have never seen anything quite like this accessible toilet. It’s a gold star, best practice example.”

Special mention – Wisconsin Department of Tourism, USA. Wisconsin offers tourists a trio of toileting triumphs. Each 4 th of July weekend at the Perkinstown Outhouse Challenge competitors race 4x4ft specially decorated outhouses round an obstacle course. It’s a race with a toilet, not to a toilet. The female bathrooms at the SafeHouse Bar & Restaurant in Milwaukee feature a portrait of a very exposed (and young) Burt Reynolds with a strategically placed red heart. If any of the ladies try to take a peek behind the heart a siren goes off alerting the whole restaurant as to who’s been inquisitive. Then there’s the ‘great wall of China’, a two-story wall made of 177 toilets stacked floor to ceiling in the Kohler Design Center, which attracts 150,000 tourists, builders and architects to its ‘Disney world of plumbing’ each year.

Judge’s comment: “Wisconsin is a destination that celebrates the power of the WC as a tourism attraction. We love the Perkinstown Outhouse Challenge with its Prettiest Potty award and TP Toss and Plunger Relay, all of which raises funds for a local recreation club.”

Interesting, very interesting! For the past 9 years I have had a project in my Event Operations courses (first at AZ State, since 2014 at High Point University) every semester where students have had to make the worst experience at every event – the porta potty – better, either operationally, experientially, or a combination of both. The students have come up with literally 100’s of ideas, some silly, but others very practical. I made the project into a competition and the semi-annual winners receive Crappy Awards.

Hi there Bron

When can we enter for the 2018 awards? We are building some pretty special loos with celebrities and would like to enter these in the 2018 submissions if possible.

November 5, 2017 at 10:01 am

Hi there Paul

How exciting! I am not too far way from the Concord Caltex so I will make sure I stop by next time I am heading that way. I am so glad you are taking loos seriously. As a frequent road tripper, if I know you have a Caltex with a great, fun, clean loo I can take my kids too. We would most certainly stop, potentially refuel, get snacks, water, ice-creams and sumo salads for a family of 5. Great business decision. We look to be launching Feb 2018 so keep an eye out. I will also make sure you are notified when we launch. Bron

I’ve always said that the state of a toilet tells you (me) what the place thinks of you. It’s often treated as an afterthought, whereas, as you point out, the loo is a lot more than that! I’d like to see some entries from Japan next year- Toto toilets are a wonder to behold (or at least to sit upon)!

July 27, 2017 at 4:52 pm

Hi there Sue. Tanks so much for your comment. I personally LOVE Japanese toilets, they are always a highlight. We will ensure we have some entries next year! Bron

It may be humble, but it is the number 1 core need that needs to be addressed in tourism and events! Thanks. Hopefully you guys will have an entry for 2018! Bron

We here at Kathleen Buzzacott Art Studio Central Australia are absolutely thrilled to be joint winner’s with Hahei Resort New Zealand. For Best Design in the Tourism Toilet Awards. A fun award with a seriously important goal, highlighting the importance of good clean amenities for tourists. Centre for Appropriate Technology, Alice Springs were responsible for the beautiful simple architectural design. Indigenous Dot Art Doors painted by Kathleen. The tourists just love these toilets!

July 3, 2017 at 5:35 pm

Hi Kathleen, we love your artistically painted toilets, well done. Out of interest, how long did it take to paint them? Bron

July 13, 2017 at 6:06 am

The two doors took 4 days to paint they are painted both sides so when you sit on the toilet you are can enjoy the art. Visitors sometimes don’t come out of the loo for a while, when their friends say “are you alright in there?” they answer “it’s amazing in here”

July 14, 2017 at 11:07 am

Thanks Kathleen! It sounds like such an amazing experience. Bron

I hear the Toilet Tourism awards have been announced. Do you have the list of winners? I was tickled by this at first, but it is such an important thing that could make or break a travel experience. But more than that it draws attention to such an important environmental health hazard around the world, especially in the developing world. That humans (and especially women) are able to perform an inescapable biological function with some dignity is so critical to human wellbeing and development
