I believe the numbers are 120 OCLV for the 5000 frame, and 110 for the 5500. Is there any real difference with this? In stiffness, weight, cosmetics? Any input would be appreciated.

This one right here is in impressive working condition save for a few cosmetic imperfections (see photos). The scuffs, dings, and wear on the frame are from being scratched with the bike rack, U-lock, by natural elements, loose road pebbles, by the rider (not deliberately, of course) and, quite possibly, by poor hornets/fireflies/little floating aliens colliding at high speed onto the bikeframe, but absolutely not from crashes. I bought this bike from my cousin's classmate who just finished his MA and elected to return to Mexico to pursue his teaching career there (awesome guy!). So he did not want to spend a lot on shipping the bike and my cousin convinced him to just sell it to me instead. I've always wanna have this bike ever since Trek first launched it; I just wasn't able to afford its more than $2,000 initial price tag since I was still a ramen-eating college student back then. So I'm selling right now because the bike has been left merely to gather dust and, perhaps with further neglect, rust while being u-locked for days on end in the garage. Owing to a busy schedule, a recent inclination to the sedentary lifestyle, and a recent injury, I don't see myself on the drops any time in the near future. And, perhaps after having overheard all the exciting TV commentary during this recently concluded Tour de France and after knowing for a fact that a Latino cyclist finally won the entire thing (note: this bike was originally based in Monterrey, Mexico--see images), the still u-locked Trek 5000 might not put up with my no-road-bike-rides-sh*t anymore. Over the past few days, the bike been clamoring for 100-mile-or-more rides and those perfectly paved open roads rarely seen within LA County limits. I mean, who am I to deny its call? The efficient chainset makes gear shifting smooth and precise. The entire groupset is of the Ultegra / Shimano 105 variety, the Cadillac of bike componentry. It has a compact chainset which gives the bike an impressive range of gears, ideal for steep climbs without compromising weight. Given the frame material and groupset, this bike is incredibly light. And in spite of it being so lightweight, the bike still effortlessly manages to absorb all those otherwise ball-busting bumps you get on the road. I don’t know how it does it--it just does, every single time. No need to fear those potholes and ramps with this one! This model is the predecessor to the Trek #Madone series (they're pretty much the same bike, if you ask me, except for the astounding difference in price), that tidbit adds even more value to this particular Trek 5000. And it was released on the very year that Lance Armstrong “won” his 7th and final #Tour de France championship. This is also the last year that Trek made a carbon frame with conventional road geometry right here in the #USA. Not to mention, the OCLV is the highest quality, handmade #American carbon fibre material. Many of the concurrent Trek releases were made with TCT carbon but this one right here was crafted with the more stable, much superior OCLV carbon material. Just sayin' tho. #NoBikeShade Deets for Geeks: Kickstand: there is no kickstand (unnecessary weight) Computer: mounted on handlebar (center-right) and along the bike frame (CatEye Astrale 8) Saddle: adjusts accordingly to your riding position Hollow Race Lux (Keith Bontrager) Seatpost: Bontrager Race X Lite, carbon RaceXLite (Keith Bontrager) Stem: Bontrager Race, 31.8 Handlebar: Bontrager Race, 31.8 DRIVETRAIN AND BRAKES Pedals: rubber with reflector (Wellgo) Rear Brake: Shimano 105 w/STI levers 105 (Shimano) Crankset: Bontrager Race Lite 52/42/30 Rims: Keith Bontrager, 622x15 series 6000 Tires: Vittoria Zaffiro Pro, 700x23c Cassette: 9 speed (Clean, Like New) Rear Derailleur: Shimano Ultegra Front Derailleur: Shimano 105 Rear Shifter: Shimano Ultegra Front Shifter: Shimano Ultegra FRAME AND FORK Fork: OCLV Carbon 110 Race (Keith Bontrager) Headset: Cane Creek C-1, sealed

As stated in the final part of the description: "#RaceXlite seatpost Bontrager Hollow Race Lux bike seat Saddle adjusts accordingly to your riding position Equipped with Shimano #Ultegra Componentry" Perhaps the saddle position looks like that is due to myself embarking from the bike. If that's your only criticism of the bike, then, by logic, there is nothing wrong about it.

Sideshowbob says:

Seat post height and saddle position looks very uncomfortable

It can be easily adjusted. Not a problem. Although I understand what you mean. It's just that for this pictorial, I dunno how it turned out that way cos that's no way to ride any bike at all.

New Trek 5000 vs. Used 5200

  • Add to quote

I'm in the market for a new carbon bike to replace my aluminum. I have an opportunity to buy a used Trek 5200 (I think it's about 4 years old). My local dealer has the 2006 5000. The 5200 is made in U.S.; I know the 5000 is made overseas. The 5200 has Ultegra 9-speed. The 5000 has an Ultegra/105 mix (mostly 105). The new 5000 is on sale for $1,500. Am I better off getting the used 5200 or the new 5000? I'm concerned about the TCT carbon frame, am I going to to regret not getting the OCLV. The alternative is to save some money and buy a new 5200. Thanks.

Get the new one. For the average rider, there's zero difference between TCT/OCLV or any other catchy name they atribute to a certain frame material. I'm still of the opinion that it's mostly mindgames anyway. If I were in your shoes, I would be MUCH less concerned about a brand-new frame with warranty than a 4 year old frame (which may or may not be OK) every day of the week.

Trek dealers should also have 2006 Ultegra 10 speed epuipped 5200's on sale for $1999. If you can afford te extra cash, they're a great buy. If they don't have one in stock, ask them to order one for you.

That was a TdF sale only I thought... If it's still that price...jump on it! - Chris

For what its worth - I picked my 5200 Ultegra 10 speed up at my LBS today...on sale for $1999. They happened to have my size in stock but had offered to order one if needed.

When I test-rode the 5000, my LBS had quoted a price of $2,400 to roder a 5200 in my size, none in stock. Also, they don't seem willing to make any deal because they have to special order all higher ends bikes. They keep mostly entry level models in stock.

I ordered my 5200 triple last week for $1,850. Hoping to have it for Saturday!

The American made 5200 is "no more." The only Trek based upon the original 5000 series frame design is the Chinese 5000, and while it looks similar, it is a one-piece main triangle (not lugged and bonded) and is significantly heavier.

I have recently acquired this bike and am trying to find out the following information as I absolutely no knowledge of Trek road bikes and have found very little information on the internet so far. There is no model number on the frame so I would like to find out which one it is and also how old the bike is likely to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

IanSmithCSE said: Good afternoon, Hi Ian. I appreciate your input and understand where you’re coming from. like all these things, technology moves on and unless it was a particularly rare piece in the first place or immaculate then I guess the value is what someone is prepared to pay for it. I had thiught that it might be between £400 and £500 but I guess I’ll see what response I get once I’ve put it up for sale A few months ago I bought one of these https://road.cc/content/review/68753-jamis-xenith-pro from 2013 but virtually unused for £850. If you take the earlier link to BlueBook and just convert $ to £ then that is probably fair. You posted an image of the brake lever which has had a hard life so it is likely that you would be looking at the bottom end of the price range. Being even more depressing there are no obvious buyers. IanSmithCSE said: Good afternoon, A few months ago I bought one of these https://road.cc/content/review/68753-jamis-xenith-pro from 2013 but virtually unused for £850. If you take the earlier link to BlueBook and just convert $ to £ then that is probably fair. You posted an image of the brake lever which has had a hard life so it is likely that you would be looking at the bottom end of the price range. Being even more depressing there are no obvious buyers. How we created 800 Series OCLV Carbon Necessity is the mother of invention. Like a lot of other big tech developments, 800 Series OCLV Carbon was created to solve a problem—we wanted to make our aero bikes lighter. Aero tube shapes take more material to make, so they are generally heavier than typical tubes. A new, lighter carbon layup would ensure the added weight of aero tubes wouldn’t offset gains in speed.

A game-changing new fiber

800 Series OCLV Carbon contains fibers that are 30% stronger than previous carbon fibers we’ve used, while retaining the same amount of stiffness. That means that we can use less of it than a different type of carbon, and still get the same effect. This is huge—it allows us to make aero shapes without adding a ton of weight.

A dialed process

There are lots of carbon bikes out there, but not all carbon bikes are created equal. Carbon fiber is an incredible yet complicated material to build things from. To do so successfully takes a lot of expertise—something we’ve been cultivating for over 25 years through our OCLV Carbon process. We’ve learned that the real magic comes in knowing what types of fibers to use, and where to use them. It’s a process our engineers compare to tuning a piano. It’s not just about materials the piano’s made from or having the loudest piano. It’s about creating something that’s more than the sum of its parts—a beautiful sound. Getting a piano to sound stunning (or building a bike that’s a joy to ride) is both a science and an artform.

It’s all about the layup

800 Series OCLV Carbon consists of several different high-end carbon fibers, and the quality of a frame comes from getting the right fibers in the right place. This layup is the secret sauce—it's what creates the perfect harmony of stiffness, strength, light weight, and performance.

Testing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…

With the help of advanced computer modeling, we developed over 50 layups to find the new 800 Series OCLV. Each prototype had different kinds of carbon placed in different areas depending on the stressors occurring at each part of the frame, and on the qualities we wanted the new frame to have. We meticulously tested and quantified each laminate’s structural integrity, weight, and ride quality, which was crucial in helping us determine exactly why we liked the performance of one laminate over another. Once we narrowed it down to just a few layups, we had Lidl-Trek racers test ride the bikes and tell us which frame they liked the best.

Our best carbon ever

It took more than two years of development, but 800 Series OCLV is the lightest and highest-performing carbon layup we’ve ever created. It’s stronger than our previous laminates, yet just as stiff. The advent of 800 Series OCLV marks the start of a new era for our highest-end aero bikes—never again will we have to sacrifice weight for speed.

trek 5000 oclv carbon 120 weight

Lightest, fastest, first up every climb—this bike delivers incredible ride quality and aerodynamic advantage. It’s made of all-new 800 Series OCLV Carbon and weighs less than 700 grams.

The superbike you know and love, made even lighter than before thanks to all-new 800 Series OCLV Carbon.

Lightness, comfort, looks

None that I can think of

I bought this bike 1 1/2 years ago on Kiji, and although I got it for less than half price, it was still scary to fork our that much cash for a road bike. I'd been riding a 70's era BRC road bike, which I'd upgraded. But there's no comparison with the Trek. I'm almost 65, and I'm now experiencing a bike renaissance thanks to this bike. It's got less than 1,000 km on it, so it's a newborn. All I've replaced so far is the handlebar tape and the seat (upgraded to a f:sik). I try to get out almost every day. Despite Trek getting some bad press and Sir Lancelot falling off his throne, it's still a great bike.

durability, speed, and comfort.

after 10 years of riding - none so far.

Bought new in 04'. 53K miles and just upgraded the BB to the new 9000 do to non drive side bearing noise. Still a fast, stiff, and low maintenance ride. I know Trek is suppose to suck, just sayin.

Light, comfortable, good cornering

Got the frame for a case of beer, loved it ever since I got it has full ultegra

god rides this bike because it's so bad ass

this bike has no weaknesses !

all in all great bike and love the why it rides... If you don't have this bike you need to get one.

Light, comfortable, like the handling.

The rider is getting old! Nothing to complain about the bike itself. Maybe could use a slightly stiffer fork.

I was a serious MTB rider but had not owned a road bike for 10+ years. Bought the 5500 (at the price for a 5200, because it had Ultegra rather than Dura Ace components). Rode the Marlkeville Death Ride in 1996, and many miles in the Utah mountains. Upgraded to Ultegra 9 spd triple when that became available (now somewhat regret the triple, but that is another matter). Love the bike, have ridden it many thousands of miles and never been remotely tempted to replace it.

Responsiveness, weight (although nowadays there are lighter), comfort. And hey, there's got to be some collectability there as it was ridden by Sir Lancelot to TdF victory.

None that I can think of. Well, you can get slightly lighter frames now, but the Trek is still highly competitive.

This is a 2004 model. It has been a fantastic bike. The ride is stiff and responsive but also very comfortable. The handling is also faultless. I also own a Cannondale Super Six, which definitely has a stiffer bottom bracket for snappier acceleration, anbd slightly sharper handling, but this is really splitting hairs. The Trek was my first carbon fibre framed bike and is still ridden regularly today, although mostly as a decadent commuter or occasional wet weather bike. It's been lovingly maintained and apart from a few stone chips looks as good as the day I bought it.

Cannondale CAAD4, Cannondale System Six, Cannondale Super Six

Light, carbon frame, great paint, comfortable ride.

Paint scratches easily.

This is my dream bike. It is light-weight, fast and sexy! Full Dura-Ace with Ksyrium SSC wheels. Solid ride, climbs well -- one of the best CF bikes ever made.

None that compare.

Trek warrenty is excellent!! Light!! Looks

The ride is a little mushy and you dont get the same power as you do from other bikes.

This bike isn't the dream bike for me like what another bike would be for the same price. I have to say, my bike being a 2003, it isn't as good as it could get. The ride is a little soft. The first kinda "group race" I was at, I felt like I was working harder than I used to for the same power.

Specialized aluminum frame.

Plush ride, the carbon fiber really dampens the harsh road condintions. Light weight makes it a very good climber. Stiff bottom bracket makes out of the saddle and sprinting easy. Paint job! Fabulous paint job with the custom flame paint. The Trek web site does not do the paint job justice.

Bontranger tires don't perform as well as Michelin Pro Race I am used to, both in feel and durablility. For the price, I would have expected titanium rails on the saddle standard-not option. Initial set-up of Dura Ace did not deliver as crisp of shifting as my old Ultegra.

I bought a 5500 Project One from my LBS. This was a post deployment gift to myself for spending a year in Iraq. My LBS ordered it for me to my specs. At first the bike didn't seem to handle as well on fast downhill turns as my previous ride. This was due to the feel I received form the tires and the carbon fork. After 1300 miles since picking it up on 29Jan05, I am extremely happy with the bike. The combination of my weight loss in Iraq and the weight reduction of the bike (4lbs lighter than my old rig) makes all areas of riding better. This bike begs you to rack up the miles.

1996 Giant CRF 3, upgraded in 2000 to Ultegra 9 speed. Shimano Flight Deck and Shimano Ultegra wheelset. Logged over 35,000 miles on it.

Light, Fast, Stable. Flawless green paint job. Frame is beautiful to look at. Comfortable ride. Got to choose all components. A custon bike that performs. Made in the U.S.A.

None. Hard to ever consider riding a lessor bike.

This bike exceeded my exectations in every way. I have used this bike for over 3,000 miles and can find nothing to complain about. The bontrager wheels are fantastic, Still in perfect original true after subjection to my initial 232 pound body. Now my 60 year old 200 pound body climbs hills and can compleate a century ride with speed and comfort. After 35 years of avid cycling, this is the first bike I can recomend without reservation. Buying this bike was a great experience, thanks to Chris and all the crew at Palm Springs Cyclery. They gave me great advice and lots their time in fine tuning my order and selecting the right components for my needs. Service has been exceptional and my bike is retuned on time and sparkling clean.

Custom Reynolds 531 frame with campy super record.

  5. What is the real difference between OCLV 120 and 110?

Beaver wrote: All 5000/5200/5500 frames (since 2002 or so) are the same (OCLV 120), only the 5900 ist made from OCLV 110. But the frame ain't any lighter, the weight reduction only results from the fork (Bontrager Race XXX-lite).

I brought a 2005 Trek 5000 with the OCLV 120 carbon frame, the fortunate thing was my fork was OCLV 110. I contacted Trek about this, and they stated they were out of stock with the Bontrager forks so some 5000's had the benefit of getting the 110's. I replaced the 105 components with all Ultegra except for the front derailler which is a Dura Ace.

    5. ★★★★★. ★★★★★. Strength: OCLV is race tested and winner new colors smooth ride good price. Weakness: none really. I have been happy with the performance of my bike so far. Some other brands of carbon bikes may feel a little more "snappy", but the Trek 5000 has a smooth ride that is great for long rides.

  11. New Trek 5000 vs. Used 5200

I've looked at TCT carbon vs. OCLV carbon and, according to Trek's Customer service, TCT carbon is still designed and engineered by the same people who do OCLV, but the material is both made over seas and made with material that is quite a bit heavier; 200 grams per square meter as opposed to 120 grams per square meter. (or 110 or 55, depending on the bike.)
